The biocontrol nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita infects and increases mortality of Monadenia fidelis, a non-target terrestrial gastropod species endemic to the Pacific Northwest of North America, in laboratory conditions.

Inundative biological control (biocontrol) efforts in pest management lead to the mass distribution of commercialized biocontrol agents. Many 'biocontrol gone awry' incidents have resulted in disastrous biodiversity impacts, leading to increased scrutiny of biocontrol efforts. The nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita is sold as a biocontrol agent on three continents and targets pest gastropods such as Deroceras reticulatum, the Grey Field Slug; P. hermaphrodita is not presently approved for use in the United States. Investigations into the potential for P. hermaphrodita to infect non-target gastropod species of conservation relevance, however, are limited. We examined the effects of three strains of P. hermaphrodita on mortality in Monadenia fidelis, the Pacific Sideband, a snail species endemic to the Pacific Northwest of North America, in laboratory conditions. Across a 71-day laboratory infectivity assay, snails exposed to each of the three nematode strains, each analyzed at two doses, experienced a mean 50% mortality by days 20-42. All nematode-treated snails were dead by the end of the study. By contrast, 30/30 water-control snails experienced no mortality. Nematodes killed smaller, juvenile-stage snails significantly faster than those in larger and more developmentally advanced hosts. Our results provide direct evidence that the biocontrol nematode P. hermaphrodita infects and kills M. fidelis, a non-target gastropod species endemic to the Pacific Northwest, in laboratory conditions. This study suggests that introduction of P. hermaphrodita to new ecosystems might negatively impact endemic gastropod biodiversity and advocates for further investigation of non-target effects, including in conditions closer to the natural environments of non-target species.

Lethal effect of Goniozus legneri on Cactoblastis cactorum: A potential biocontrol agent for inundative releases.

Cactoblastis cactorum (Berg) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), the cactus moth, is native to South America with a widespread distribution in Argentina. The larvae consume the interior of Opuntia spp. (Cactaceae) plants. The moth was used as a biocontrol agent against invasive non-native Opuntia spp. in many countries around the world. The cactus moth arrived unintentionally in Florida, USA, expanded its range and threatened Opuntia-based agriculture and natural ecosystems in southern North America. The insect is also a pest of cultivated O. ficus-indica L. in Argentina. An endemic South American parasitoid, Goniozus legneri Gordth (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae), is used in inundative biological control programmes against lepidopteran pests. The goal of this work was to evaluate G. legneri as a biocontrol agent to be used in inundative releases against C. cactorum. Mortality of C. cactorum by G. legneri was assessed at different spatial scales, as well as the interactions with Apanteles opuntiarum Martínez & Berta (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a common Argentine natural enemy of C. cactorum. The ability of G. legneri to paralyse, parasitise and kill C. cactorum was confirmed. The paralysis inflicted on C. cactorum larvae reduced larval damage to the plants by 85%. Using two parasitoid species increased the mortality of C. cactorum larvae, but it was highly dependent on the order of their arrival. The combined mortality caused by both parasitoids was higher than a single one, in particular when G. legneri arrived first (56 ± 1%), suggesting asymmetric competition due to the preference of G. legneri attacking previously parasitised larvae. Goniozus legneri has potential as an inundative biocontrol agent of C. cactorum, but its interaction with the classical biocontrol agent A. opuntiarum needs to be considered.

Comparison of Predatory Performance among Three Ladybird Species, Harmonia axyridis, Coccinella septempunctata and Hippodamia variegata, Feeding on Goji Berry Psyllid, Bactericera gobica.

The psyllid Bactericera gobica is a serious pest in goji berry orchards. The current primary psyllid control methods involve chemical pesticides, which pose potential risks to human health and the environment. The implementation and promotion of biological control agents should receive increased attention as an alternative approach to safeguarding goji berry orchards. To compare the predatory performance of three potential biocontrol agents of psyllids, including Harmonia axyridis, Coccinella septempunctata and Hippodamia variegata, the functional response and intraspecific interactions of adult ladybirds were studied under laboratory conditions. We observed a significantly higher searching efficiency (0.84 ± 0.09) in H. axyridis when preying on psyllids compared to H. variegata (0.55 ± 0.05), whereas the handling time for psyllids was considerably longer in H. axyridis (7.33 ± 0.83 min) than in H. variegata (5.67 ± 0.97 min). The impact of intraspecific interactions on H. variegata (0.44 ± 0.04) was significantly greater than that on C. septempunctata (0.29 ± 0.03), whereas the maximum consumption by C. septempunctata (223.35 ± 41.3) significantly exceeded that of H. variegata (133.4 ± 26.9). Our study suggests that each of these three ladybird species possesses distinct advantages as a potential predator of psyllids. However, further field studies are required to determine the most promising ladybird species for rapid impact through inundative biological control, taking into consideration the specific environmental adaptability of each ladybird species. The present study is expected to provide evidence that supports the potential of incorporating promising ladybird species as an effective biological control agent in goji berry orchard management programs.

Potential control of Vespula germanica and Polistes dominula (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) using entomopathogens

ABSTRACT The first recordings in South Africa of the invasive social wasps, Vespula germanica and Polistes dominula (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) were in 1974 and again in 2008. These wasps are known to represent a significant threat to the biodiversity of ecosystems and socio-economic activities in countries they invade. Here, the susceptibility of V. germanica and P. dominula larvae to indigenous species of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs), namely Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, H. noenieputensis and Steinernema yirgalemense, and entomopathogenic fungus (EPF) Beauveria bassiana was tested both in laboratory bioassays and in situ wasp nests application in the Western Cape province. The bioassay results indicate that both P. dominula and V. germanica larvae are susceptible to all biocontrol agents used. All larvae of both wasp species were dead and infected after exposure to 200 IJ/insect within four days after inoculation. Similar results were obtained seven days after inoculation with B. bassiana. To test in-field pathogenicity against P. dominula, wasp nests were treated with B. bassiana, H. bacteriophora, a mixture of the EPF and EPN species and a control of distilled water. The number of larvae and pupae infected 168 h after application were determined. In both cases, the mixture of EPF/EPN performed best, with a mean percentage of 31.39% ± 4.75% larvae infected, and only 3.42% ± 0.68% of pupae infected. The results obtained suggest that higher concentrations of selected biologicals can be used as inundative biological control agents within an integrated management programme for the control of P. dominula and V. germanica in South Africa.

Synergistic effects of grass competition and insect herbivory on the weed Rumex obtusifolius in an inundative biocontrol approach

Outcomes of weed biological control projects are highly variable, but a mechanistic understanding of how top-down and bottom-up factors influence the success of weed biological control is often lacking. We grew Rumex obtusifolius, the most prominent native weed in European grasslands, in the presence and absence of competition from the grass Lolium perenne and subjected it to herbivory through targeted inoculation with root-boring Pyropteron spp. To explore whether the interactive effects of competition and inundative biological control were size-dependent, R. obtusifolius was planted covering a large range of plant sizes found in managed grasslands. Overall, competition from the grass sward reduced aboveground biomass and final root mass of R. obtusifolius about 62- and 7.5-fold, respectively, and increased root decay of R. obtusifolius from 14 to 58%. Herbivory alone increased only root decay. However, grass competition significantly enhanced infestation by Pyropteron spp. and, as a consequence, enhanced the impact of herbivory on aboveground biomass and final root mass. The synergistic effect was so strong that R. obtusifolius plants grown from initially smaller roots did no longer develop. Inoculating R. obtusifolius with Pyropteron species in grasslands should be further pursued as a promising inundative biological control strategy in the weed’s native range.

Brindley’s Glands Volatilome of the Predator Zelus renardii Interacting with Xylella Vectors

Alien species must adapt to new biogeographical regions to acclimatise and survive. We consider a species to have become invasive if it establishes negative interactions after acclimatisation. Xylella fastidiosa Wells, Raju et al., 1986 (XF) represents Italy’s and Europe’s most recent biological invasion. In Apulia (southern Italy), the XF-encountered Philaenus spumarius L. 1758 (Spittlebugs, Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha) can acquire and transmit the bacterium to Olea europaea L., 1753. The management of XF invasion involves various transmission control means, including inundative biological control using Zelus renardii (ZR) Kolenati, 1856 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae). ZR is an alien stenophagous predator of Xylella vectors, recently entered from the Nearctic and acclimated in Europe. Zelus spp. can secrete semiochemicals during interactions with conspecifics and prey, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that elicit conspecific defence behavioural responses. Our study describes ZR Brindley’s glands, present in males and females of ZR, which can produce semiochemicals, eliciting conspecific behavioural responses. We scrutinised ZR secretion alone or interacting with P. spumarius. The ZR volatilome includes 2-methyl-propanoic acid, 2-methyl-butanoic acid, and 3-methyl-1-butanol, which are consistent for Z. renardii alone. Olfactometric tests show that these three VOCs, individually tested, generate an avoidance (alarm) response in Z. renardii. 3-Methyl-1-butanol elicited the highest significant repellence, followed by 2-methyl-butanoic and 2-methyl-propanoic acids. The concentrations of the VOCs of ZR decrease during the interaction with P. spumarius. We discuss the potential effects of VOC secretions on the interaction of Z. renardii with P. spumarius.

The diversity of microfungi associated with grasses in the Sporobolus indicus complex in Queensland, Australia.

There are five closely related Sporobolus species, collectively known as weedy Sporobolus grasses (WSG) or the rat's tail grasses. They are fast growing, highly competitive, unpalatable weeds of pastures, roadsides and woodlands. An effective biological control agent would be a welcomed alternative to successive herbicide application and manual removal methods. This study describes the initial exploratory phase of isolating and identifying native Australian microfungi associated with WSG, prior to evaluating their efficacy as inundative biological control agents. Accurate species-level identification of plant-pathogenic microfungi associated with WSG is an essential first step in the evaluation and prioritisation of pathogenicity bioassays. Starting with more than 79 unique fungal morphotypes isolated from diseased Sporobolus grasses in Queensland, Australia, we employed multi-locus phylogenetic analyses to classify these isolates into 54 fungal taxa. These taxa belong to 22 Ascomycete families (12 orders), of which the majority fall within the Pleosporales (>24 taxa in 7 families). In the next phase of the study, the putative species identities of these taxa will allow us to prioritise those which are likely to be pathogenic based on existing literature and their known ecological roles. This study represents the first step in a systematic, high-throughput approach to finding potential plant pathogenic biological control agents.

Reproductive attributes and functional response of Anastatus japonicus on eggs of Antheraea pernyi, a factitious host.

Anastatus japonicus Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae) is a solitary egg endoparasitoid that has been studied for inundative biological control of Halyomorpha halys Stål (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in China. In this study, we assessed the reproductive attributes and functional response of Anastatus japonicus on a factitious host, Antheraea pernyi (Guérin-Méneville) (Lepidoptera: Anthelidae) at 25 ± 1°C, 70 ± 5% relative humidity and 16 h:8 h light/dark photoperiod. The mean lifetime fecundity of Anastatus japonicus females was 404.3 progeny produced over an average oviposition period of 42.3 days. The sex ratio of adult progeny was slightly male biased (51.2%), whereas more female progeny were produced before day 20 of a female's life. Single 1-day-old mated Anastatus japonicus females exhibited a type II functional response to increasing host densities (1-50 eggs), with an inverse host density-dependent pattern of percent parasitism. The upper limit to the daily attack rate was estimated as 7.6 Antheraea pernyi eggs. Furthermore, mutual interference among Anastatus japonicus females occurred when increasing densities of parasitoids (1, 2, 4, 8, 16) were exposed to 30 host eggs. Laboratory functional response result revealed that individual Anastatus japonicus might be unable to respond effectively to increasing host density in the field, which could be compensated by releasing larger numbers of wasps. Strong mutual interference among foraging Anastatus japonicus females should be considered in any future inundative biological control programs for the sustainable management of Halyomorpha halys or other host insect pests. © 2022 The Authors. It's a numbers game: inundative biological control of water hyacinth (Pontederia crassipes), using Megamelus scutellaris (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) yields success at a high elevation, hypertrophic reservoir in South Africa.

ABSTRACT Classical biological control of water hyacinth in South Africa has been constrained by cool winter temperatures that limit population growth of the biological control agents, and highly eutrophic waters which enhance plant growth. However, inundative releases of the control agent, Megamelus scutellaris (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), at the Hartbeespoort Dam, South Africa, suggest that water hyacinth can be managed successfully using biological control as a standalone intervention for the first time in the absence of herbicide operations, despite eutrophication and a temperate climate. Sentinel-2 satellite images were used to measure the reduction in water hyacinth cover from over 37% to less than 6% over two consecutive years since M. scutellaris was first released on the dam in 2018, while site surveys confirmed a corresponding increase in M. scutellaris population density from fewer than 500 insects/m2 in October 2019, to more than 6000 insects/m2 by March 2020. Inundative release strategies are recommended for the control of water hyacinth in South Africa at key stages of its invasion, particularly after winter, and flooding events.

Relative efficacy of biological control and cultural management for control of mollusc pests in cool climate vineyards

ABSTRACT Restrictions on the use of synthetic molluscicides highlight the importance of developing alternative control methods. Nevertheless, biocontrol agents can be costlier and less effective than synthetic counterparts. One means of increasing the efficacy of population suppression is to combine inundative biological control with habitat management to reduce population growth of target pests. Vineyards in the cool, wet climate of western England can suffer from outbreak densities of mollusc pests that damage expanding shoots, developing grapes and promote the transmission of fungal pathogens. In this study we combined the biocontrol agent Nemaslug – Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita (Schneider) – with a simple habitat management approach (regular mowing) to suppress mollusc pests in vineyards in South Western England. Two sites were treated with NemaSlug and or mowing in a factorial design in early spring coinciding with bud burst and the start of mollusc growth and feeding. Mowing was effective management and resulted in the reduction of slug and snail populations and significantly less damaged vines. Nemaslug did not reduce slug numbers overall but did reduce bud damage, snail numbers and lowered the proportion of susceptible Deroceras spp in treated plots. However, effect sizes of nematode biocontrol were small, potentially because this product could not be applied to bare soil. Management practice for cool climate vineyards varies considerably from site to site. This study shows the value of simple habitat management for controlling a novel target and emphasises how consideration of pest biology can lead to effective alternatives.

Effectiveness of Trichogramma pretiosum in controlling lepidopterous pests of soybean crops

Controlling lepidopteran pests in soybean in Uruguay usually involves the application of chemical insecticides with risks to health and the environment. As part of an inundative biological control program using Trichogramma pretiosum, a plot trial at three sites located in the department of Soriano (Uruguay), in the 2019-2020 growing season, compared this conventional practice with different doses of the egg parasitoid, number of release capsules per hectare, different number of releases in the culture cycle and ground and aerial releases (with or without release capsules). Using the cloth method, the number of larvae per linear meter and the defoliation percentage were evaluated over 6 weekly samplings. Although the best results were obtained with the application of chemical insecticides, two releases of T. pretiosum by terrestrial methods, 20 days apart, or 4 weekly applications by means of a drone, reached the best results below the thresholds of sanitary intervention, both options with 200,000 parasitoids per hectare. This biological tool can differentiate and value Uruguayan agricultural production.

Intrinsic competition between two European egg parasitoids of the brown marmorated stink bug

AbstractFollowing the accidental introduction and spread of the invasive polyphagous agricultural pest Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), the two European egg parasitoids Anastatus bifasciatus (Geoffroy) (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae) and Ooencyrtus telenomicida (Vassiliev) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) have been investigated for inundative biological control. Since the competititve outcome between the two generalist parasitoids is difficult to predict, intrinsic competition was investigated with a time‐course development study. Both species readily oviposited in H. halys eggs containing eggs and early instar larvae of the competitor, but oviposition decreased when eggs contained late instar larvae and pupae. Ooencyrtus telenomicida offspring emergence from multiparasitized eggs was significantly lower than that from rearing controls, independent of the order of parasitization. Anastatus bifasciatus offspring emergence was not influenced by the presence of O. telenomicida when it parasitized as the first species, but emergence was decreased after oviposition in eggs containing O. telenomicida larvae and pupae. There was no indication that O. telenomicida can act as a facultative hyperparasitoid of A. bifasciatus. These results suggest that A. bifasciatus is the superior intrinsic competitor and no or minor negative implications for A. bifasciatus are expected if released in combination with O. telenomicida.

Management of invasive insect species using optimal control theory

We discuss the use of optimal control theory to determine the most cost-effective management strategies for insect pests. We use a stage-structured linear population projection model where the modeled control action increases the mortality in one of the stage-classes. We illustrate the method by using a published model for the root weevil Diaprepes abbreviatus, an invasive insect species having a substantial negative impact on citrus trees in regions such as Florida and California in the United States. Here control corresponds to the application of inundative biological control agents (entomopathogenic nematodes as biopesticides) which increases the mortality of the larval stage. Our approach determines levels and timing of control to minimize the economic loss caused by D. abbreviatus. We use two numerical methods to approximate the optimal control, and compare their effectiveness.

Effectiveness of different control measures against western corn rootworm larvae Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, 1868

<p>The Western Corn Rootworm (WCR), <em>Diabrotica virgifera virgifera</em> LeConte, 1868, [Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae], whose larvae cause damage to maize roots, is an important economic insect pest in America and Europe. Its larvae are usually controlled by granular soil insecticides or insecticide-treated seeds. Biological control options, such as entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) have played an important role as an alternative for synthetic chemical insecticides. Therefore, for the WCR larvae control we compared the effectiveness of inundative biological control on the basis of EPN <em>Heterorhabditis bacteriophora</em> Poinar, 1976 (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae); (commercial product Dianem<sup>®</sup>) and the conventional insecticides Force 1.5 g (active substance tefluthrin) from the group of synthetic pyrethriods and Sonido (active substance thiacloprid) from the group of neonicotinoids. Field experiments were carried out at geographically different locations under different population pressure of the insect pest in a), Bučečovci (Prlekija; Eastern Slovenia) and b), Šmartno (Gorenjska: northern Slovenia). The differences between the treatments were very similar at both locations; although the population of WCR in Gorenjska was approximately 5-fold lower than in Prlekija. The highest number of WCR beetles was caught in the negative control, followed by the product Sonido, Force and Dianem<sup>®</sup>, in decreasing order. Statistical analysis showed that only in the treatment where EPN were used, significantly less WCR was caught than in the control. The results of the WCR larvae control in maize using <em>Heterorhabditis bacteriophora</em> are comparable to published literature. However, the weather conditions in the 2016 trial were very favorable for the development and survival of EPN in the soil.</p>

Dispersion and Persistence of Trichogrammatoidea bactrae (Nagaraja) over Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), in Tomato Greenhouses.

Inundative biological control depends on the ability of natural enemies to disperse and persist in the environment. The objective was to evaluate the dispersion and persistence of Trichogrammatoidea bactrae (Nagaraja) on Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) eggs. Inundative releases of this parasitoid were performed in experimental tomato greenhouses. For vertical dispersion, leaves of the upper and middle third of plants were artificially infested with T. absoluta eggs; for horizontal dispersion, plants at increasing distances from a release point were infested. These eggs were renewed at days 2 and 4 to evaluate persistence. The amount of parasitized patches was registered. Logistic regression analysis was used. The position of the eggs in the plant did not affect the DE (discovery efficiency: proportion of parasitized patches). Time since release negatively affected the DE, while distance affected it only when plants were higher. These results could be used to adjust the release methodology of T. bactrae.

Multiple resource supplements synergistically enhance predatory mite populations.

Many plants offer food rewards such as extrafloral nectar and food bodies, which have been shown to attract and retain entomophagous arthropods. In addition to food rewards, plants may possess structures that serve as shelter and/or oviposition sites for beneficial arthropods, so-called domatia. Acarodomatia are commonly used by beneficial mites for oviposition and protection from intraguild predators and adverse climatic conditions (drought). While in nature these food and shelter traits often occur in combination, they have been largely studied in isolation and we know little about how these traits interact, i.e., whether they act independently, antagonistically or synergistically. In the present study, we used citrus seedlings to test the impact of provisioning fibers (as a proxy for acarodomatia), as well as two different categories of food rewards (pollen and sugars) on oviposition and population development of phytoseiid mites. The highest oviposition and abundance of predatory mites was obtained in the treatment where the three resources were offered in combination. The combined impact of the three resources when provided jointly was up to five times higher than the summed impacts of each resource provided individually, thus providing evidence for a three-way synergy between the fibers, pollen and sugars. From an ecological point of view, our results demonstrate that combining multiple indirect defensive traits can strongly enhance the impact on the mutualistic arthropods. Differences in resource provisioning strategies in plant-phytoseiid and plant-ant mutualisms are being discussed. The presented results are of particular importance for our understanding of the functioning of defensive plant-arthropod mutualisms, as well as for the use of predatory mites in conservation- or inundative biological control.

Inundative pest control: How risky is it? A case study using entomopathogenic nematodes in a forest ecosystem

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) are globally important inundative biological control agents. Their widespread use makes environmental risk assessment important, but very few comprehensive post-application risk assessments have been conducted for EPN. We apply a rigorous risk analysis procedure to the use of EPN applied in a forest ecosystem to suppress the large pine weevil (Hylobius abietis). In this synthesis, we provide a quantitative evaluation of five risk categories: (a) establishment, (b) dispersal, (c) host range, (d) direct non-target effects and (e) indirect non-target effects. A low level of risk was identified (35–51 out of a possible total of 125). Species exotic to the clear-fell forest ecosystem (Steinernema carpocapsae and Heterorhabditis downesi) were accorded a lower overall risk status than native species and strains (Steinernema feltiae), largely as a result of their shorter persistence in the target environment. We conclude that EPN are a low risk viable alternative control for pine weevil compared to the higher risk conventional control using pyrethroid or neonicotinoid insecticides.

Establishment and early impact of the native biological control candidate Pyropteron chrysidiforme on the native weed Rumex obtusifolius in Europe

Rumex obtusifolius (Caryophyllales: Polygonaceae) is one of the most troublesome weeds in European grasslands and non-chemical control options are largely lacking. In this study, we assessed the potential of the native root-feeding specialist insect Pyropteron chrysidiforme (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae) for inundative biological control of R. obtusifolius. At multiple grassland sites, we applied P. chrysidiforme varying in developmental stage and level of protection onto R. obtusifolius to be examined in the subsequent autumn and spring. We consistently found the highest infestation resulting from the application of eggs (71 % of plants infested in autumn) with concomitantly elevated root decay and fewer rosettes compared to control plants. Moreover, in spring we found trends for associated decreases in biomass and number of shoots. Our findings support P. chrysidiforme as a promising biological control candidate of R. obtusifolius, but further investigations will be required to assess the consistency and long-term impacts of this novel approach.

Diversity and Abundance of House Fly Pupal Parasitoids in Israel, with First Records of Two Spalangia Species.

Filth flies (Diptera: Muscidae), particularly the house fly, Musca domestica L., are global pests of livestock production. In this study, we characterized the fauna of house fly pupal parasitoids in Israel and identified factors affecting their diversity and abundance. The study, which included one round of sampling during the fall of 2013 and another round of sampling in the spring of 2014, encompassed 26 locations of common fly-breeding habitats: dairy, egg-laying, and goat farms throughout Israel. Nine parasitoid species were found: Spalangia cameroni Perkins, Spalangia endius Walker, Spalangia drosophilae Ashmead, Spalangia gemina Boucek, Spalangia nigroaenea Curtis, Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae Rondani, Muscidifurax raptor Girault and Sanders, Muscidifurax zaraptor Kogan & Legner (all Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), and Dirhinus giffardii Silvestri (Hymenoptera: Chalcididae). This is the first record of S. gemina from the Palearctic, as well as the first record of S. drosophilae from the Middle East. The composition and relative abundance of parasitoid species varied markedly among localities, climatic regions (Mediterranean vs. desert), habitat types (dairy vs. egg-laying vs. goat farm), and seasons. Overall, parasitoid richness in egg-laying farms was two- and sevenfold higher than in dairy and goat farms, respectively, and three times higher in Mediterranean than desert climate. The significance and implications of our results for inundative biological control programs of filth flies are discussed.

Intraguild predation of Geocoris punctipes on Eretmocerus eremicus and its influence on the control of the whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum.

Geocoris punctipes (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae) and Eretmocerus eremicus (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) are whitefly natural enemies. Previously, under laboratory conditions, we showed that G. punctipes engages in intraguild predation (IGP), the attack of one natural enemy by another, on E. eremicus. However, it is unknown whether this IGP interaction takes place under more complex scenarios, such as semi-field conditions. Even more importantly, the effect of this interaction on the density of the prey population requires investigation. Therefore, the present study aimed to establish whether this IGP takes place under semi-field conditions and to determine whether the predation rate of G. punctipes on the whitefly decreases when IGP takes place. Molecular analysis showed that, under semi-field conditions, G. punctipes performed IGP on E. eremicus. However, although IGP did take place, the predation rate by G. punctipes on the whitefly was nevertheless higher when both natural enemies were present together than when the predator was present alone. While IGP of G. punctipes on E. eremicus does occur under semi-field conditions, it does not adversely affect whitefly control. The concomitant use of these two natural enemies seems a valid option for inundative biological control programmes of T. vaporariorum in tomato. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry.
