High efficient room temperature phosphorescent materials constructed with methylene molecular configuration.

In this work, we have investigated several pure organic room temperature phosphorescent materials with donor-methylene acceptor configurations with relatively different quantum efficiency. The results show that the introduction of methylene functional group in room temperature phosphorescent materials based on donor-acceptor configuration is more favorable for obtaining higher phosphorescent quantum efficiency in crystal phase environment. More importantly, our calculations reveal the root cause of the excellent quantum efficiency performance after the introduction of methylene groups. The results show that the introduction of methylene can inhibit the structural deformation of molecules during the excited state transition process and give them higher interaction. Moreover, in the donor-acceptor configuration, the heavy atom effect is more favorable to the formation of π-x (X = Br) interaction to accelerate the occurrence of intersystem crossing and achieve a higher intersystem crossing rate. Therefore, the donor-methylene-acceptor molecule is expected to improve the quantum efficiency of room temperature phosphorescence, and the addition of heavy atoms is more conducive to prolong the life of room temperature phosphorescence. This work provides a useful reference for rational design of room temperature phosphorescent materials with high efficiency and long life.

Femtosecond Charge Transfer Dynamics in Monomolecular Films in the Context of Molecular Electronics.

A key issue of molecular electronics (ME) is the correlation between the molecular structure and the charge transport properties of the molecular framework. Accordingly, a variety of model and potentially useful molecular systems are designed, to prove a particular function or correlation or to build a prototype device. These studies usually involve the measurements of the static electric conductance properties of individual molecules and their assembles on solid supports. At the same time, information about the dynamics of the charge transport (CT) and transfer in such systems, complementary in the context of ME and of a scientific value on its own, is quite scarce. Among other means, this drawback can be resolved by resonant Auger electron spectroscopy (RAES) in combination with core hole clock (CHC) approach, as described in this Account. The RAES-CHC scheme was applied to a variety of aliphatic and aromatic self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), adsorbed on Au(111) over the thiolate and selenolate docking groups. Electron transfer (ET) from a suitable terminal tail group to the substrate, across the molecular framework, was monitored, triggered by resonant excitation of this group (nitrile in most cases) by narrow-band X-ray radiation. This resulted in the quantitative data for the characteristic ET time, τET, in the femtosecond domain, with the time window ranging from ∼1 fs to ∼120 fs. The derived τET exhibit an exponential dependence on the molecular length, mimicking the behavior of the static conductance and suggesting a common physical basis behind the static CT and ET dynamics. The dynamic decay factors, βET, for the alkyl, oligophenyl, and acene molecular "wires" correlate well with the analogous parameters for the static CT. Both τET and βET values exhibit a distinct dependence on the character of the involved molecular orbital (MO), demonstrating that the efficiency and rate of the CT in molecular assemblies can be controlled by resonant injection of the charge carriers into specific MOs. This dependence as well as a lack of correlation between the molecular tilt and τET represent strong arguments in favor of the generally accepted model of CT across the molecular framework ("through-bond") in contrast to "through-space" tunneling. Comparison of the SAMs with thiolate and selenolate docking groups suggests that the use of selenolate instead of thiolate does not give any gain in terms of ET dynamics or molecular conductance. Whereas a certain difference in the efficiency of the electronic coupling of thiolate and selenolate to the substrate cannot be completely excluded, this difference is certainly too small to affect the performance of the entire molecule to a noticeable extent. The efficient electronic coupling of the thiolate docking group to the substrate was verified and the decoupling of the electronic subsystems of the substrate and π-conjugated segment by introduction of methylene group into the backbone was demonstrated. No correlation between the molecular dipole or fluorine substitution pattern (at the side positions) and the ET efficiency was recorded. Several representative examples for the resonantly addressable tail groups are given, and perspectives for future research in the context of ET dynamics in molecular assemblies are discussed.

Synthesis and Characterization of Piperazinium Polyelectrolytes Carrying Hydrophobic Functionalities: Effect of Counter Ion and Charge Density on Flocculation

Following our recent synthesis and characterization of three new cationic polyelectrolytes with subtle hydrophobic variability, this paper reports their physical and chemical properties in aqueous media in relation to their chemical structure. Aryl substituted cationic polyelectrolytes varying with their charge density are reported for the first time. Viscosity studies show that these polymers display typical polyelectrolytic behavior. The flocculation efficiency of the polyelectrolytes was investigated with different counter ions. The zeta potential of the polyelectrolytes indicates the charge of the mono and diquaternary ammonium salts which is supported by chloride analysis. The morphology of polymer before and after flocculation was investigated. The introduction of methylene group and quaternary nitrogen play an important role in the flocculation process. It was shown that increasing the hydrophobicity and charge density of the aryl substituted polymer affects the flocculation in the industrial tannery effluent and bentonite suspension.

Theoretical investigations on the structural, spectroscopic and photophysical properties of iridium (III) complexes with non-conjugated ligands toward blue phosphor in OLEDs

To achieve true blue-emitting iridium(III) complexes for organic light-emitting diodes, we theoretically designed a complex (dfbpy)2Ir(PˆN) (2, PˆN = 5-(diphenylphosphinomethyl)-3-(trifluoromethyl)pyrazole), dfbpy = 2-(2,4-difluorobenzyl)-pyridine), which derived from its prototype complex (dfppy)2Ir(PˆN) (1, dfppy: 2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridine) by the insertion of methylene group between the pyridyl and phenyl segments. Then, their geometrical and electronic structure, absorption and emission were systematically and comparatively investigated using density functional theory calculations. It is found that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) (π component) of the functionalized complex 2 resides mainly on metal iridium atom and dfbpy ligand, whereas the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) is predominantly centered on π* orbital of cyclometalated dfbpy chelates. Our calculated results reveal the absorption at the 359 nm for 2 can be attributed to the mixture of MdπLπ*(dfbpy)CT (metal-ligand charge transition, MLCT) and ILπ(dfbpy)→π*(dfbpy)CT (intra-ligand charge transition, ILCT) transitions. In particular, the maxima emission for 2 is at 450 nm, which presents a blue shift up to 80 nm as compared to prototype complex 1, indicating the introduction of methylene group is a feasible strategy to archive true blue-emitting materials.

Synthesis and evaluation of stability of m3G-CAP analogues in serum-supplemented medium and cytosolic extract

Increased efficiency in splice-correction (splice-switching) has been shown by use of a synthetic RNA 5′-end nuclear localization signal composed of an m3G-CAP. Use of the m3G-CAP as an NLS signal for therapeutic compounds in vivo is likely to require additional stability towards enzymatic degradation. For this reason introduction of stabilizing modifications into the triphosphate bridge may be beneficial. Here we report on synthesis of three m3G-CAP derivatives with a ‘native’ (m3GpppAOMe) as well as with a methylenephosphonate stabilized triphosphate bridge (m3GpCH2ppAOMe, m3GppCH2pAOMe) and the investigation of the enzymatic stability of these compounds in 10% (v/v) fetal bovine serum (FBS) and cytosolic extract from HeLa cells, thus mimicking in vivo conditions. Our results indicate that introduction of methylene group between the β and γ phosphates in m3GpCH2ppAOMe improves to some extent stability of this analogue in 10% serum but does not prolong life of this compound in the cytosolic extract. In contrast the stabilization introduced between α and β phosphates in m3GppCH2pAOMe offers threefold longer life in 10% serum and almost complete protection in cytosolic extract.

Rational Design of Anthracene-Based DNA Binders

Achieving the goal of rational design of DNA-binding ligands is important, and many inroads have been made in this direction. Toward that goal, we report a simple, systematic, and quantitative approach to design DNA-binding anthracene derivatives. Current data show that the binding free energies (DeltaG degrees) as well as enthalpies (DeltaH degrees) are related to specific structural features of the binders. Systematic design of anthracene probes, for example, indicated that the affinity can be enhanced via the introduction of methylene groups. Each methylene group contributed, on an average, -0.08+/-0.002 kcal/mol (at 1 M ionic strength, 293 K) toward the total binding free energy. Binding of the probes to DNA depended on ionic strength, and ionic strength studies were used to factor out to parse free-energy contributions due to specific interactions. The intrinsic free-energy contributions (DeltaGMol) of the probes are obtained by factoring out contributions from ionic interactions, hydration, conformational changes, polyelectrolyte effect, and the loss of rotational/translational motion. A strong, linear correlation was noted between DeltaGMol and the number of methylene groups present in the probe, and the correlation indicated free-energy contributions of -1.49 kcal/mol per methylene (at 50 mM NaCl, 293 K). This important observation provides a convenient handle to systematically fine-tune the intrinsic affinities of DNA binders. DeltaH values also showed clear trends, and each methylene contributed +0.28 kcal/mol toward the overall binding enthalpy (at 50 mM NaCl, 293 K), and this aspect is useful to fine-tune DeltaH contributions to binding. These important physical insights, derived from systematic modifications of the side chains of the DNA binders, are useful in the rational design of novel DNA binders.

A systematic evaluation of different hydrogen bonding patterns in unsymmetrical 1, n′-disubstituted ferrocenoyl peptides

The synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of 21 l,l′-disubstituted ferrocenoyl peptides of the general formula [Fe(C 5H 4-CO-Aal-OR) (C 5H 4-CO-Aa2-OR′)] is reported, with Aal and Aa2 being different amino acids. The one-pot synthesis from activated ferrocene-l,l′-dicarboxylic acid and two different amino acid esters gives the unsymmetrical ferrocenoyl peptides in yields between 27% and 42%, which can be easily separated from their symmetrical byproducts by column chromatography. All new compounds are comprehensively characterized by mass spectrometry (El and FAB, including high-resolution EI-MS), 1H and 13C NMR, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. CD spectroscopy in conjunction with 1H NMR is used to elucidate the solution structures. Using the achiral glycine (Gly) as Aal permits to determine qualitatively the structure-determining influence of the different amino acids Aa2. Helically chiral structures in ferrocene amino acids in this study are stabilized by hydrogen bonds. If one hydrogen bond partner is systematically moved away by the introduction of methylene groups, then indeed the strength of the hydrogen bond decreases as indicated by 1H NMR chemical shifts of the amide protons and the strength of characteristic CD bands. As proline (Pro) is the only naturally accuring secondary amino acid it cannot contribute any amide proton to intra-strand hydrogen bonding. DFT calculations on the compound [Fe(C 5H 4-CO-Gly-OMe)(C 5H 4-CO-Pro-OMe)] with one achiral and one secondary amino acid were therefore performed to quantify the more subtle influence of the relative orientations of the ferrocene carbonyl groups and the cis-/ trans-conformation of both amide bonds. Not unexpectedly, the conformations with both amide bonds in cis orientation are highest in energy. Surprisingly, the calculations suggest the presence of a low-energy conformation with a non-classical hydrogen bond between the proline ester carbonyl oxygen and a glycine H α atom. However, a second conformation with no apparent intra-strand contacts but optimal positioning of all relevant groups is similar in energy. Although two conformations were observed in solution for this compound, the experimental data did not permit to assign those two conformations.

2-Aralkynyl and 2-heteroalkynyl derivatives of adenosine-5'-N-ethyluronamide as selective A2a adenosine receptor agonists.

A series of new 2-aralkynyl and 2-heteroaralkynyl derivatives of NECA were synthesized and studied in binding and functional assays to assess their potency for the A2a compared to A1 adenosine receptors. Compounds bearing an aromatic or heteroaromatic ring, conjugated to the triple bond, showed generally weaker activity at the A2a receptor and lower selectivity (A2a vs A1) than the alkylakynyl derivatives previously reported. However, the (4-formylphenyl)-ethynyl derivative 17 showed affinity in the low nanomolar range and high selectivity (about 160-fold) for the A2a receptor. The presence of heteroatoms improved vasorelaxant activity, the 2-thiazolylethynyl derivative 30 being the most potent in the series. Introduction of methylene groups between the triple bond and the phenyl ring favored the A2a binding affinity, and the 5-phenyl-1-pentynyl derivative 24 was found to be highly potent and selective (about 180-fold) at A2a receptors. With regard to antiplatelet activity, the presence of aromatic or heteroaromatic rings decreased potency in comparison with that of NECA and of N-ethyl-1'-deoxy-1'-(6-amino-2-hexynyl-9H-purin-9-yl)-beta-D-ribofura nuronamide (HENECA). Introduction of a methylene group was effective in increasing antiaggregatory potency only when this group is linked to a heteroatom (31-35). From these data and those previously reported, the structure-activity relationships derived for the 2-alkynyl-substituted ribose uronamides would indicate that potentiation of A2a receptor affinity could be obtained by aromatic rings not conjugated with the triple bond or by heteroaromatic groups. As for A2a receptors on platelets, the presence of aromatic rings, either conjugated or unconjugated to the triple bond, is detrimental for the antiaggregatory activity. However, the introduction of polar groups alpha to the triple bond strongly increases the potency when steric hindrance is avoided. Some of the compounds included in this series retain interesting vasodilating properties and merit further investigation for their potential in the treatment of cardiovascular disorders.

Electrolytic Benzoyloxylation of N, N-Dimethylamides

The electrolytic benzoyloxylation of N, N-dimethylamides, (CH2)2NCOR, with benzoic acid has been studied. At first, the electrolytic benzoyloxylation of N, N-dimethylformamide(DMF) with benzoic acid was investigated in benzene, dimethylsulfoxide(DMSO) and acetonitrile. The acetonitrile-DMF system using tetraethylammonium perchlorate as a supporting electrolyte gave the highest conversion at a low bath voltage. Therefore, acetonitrile was used as a solvent.Electrolysis of benzoic acid in acetonitrile-(CH2)2NCOR gave selectively N-beRzoxymethyl-Nmethylcarboxamides(2), similarly to the electrolysis in DMF. Studies on the effect of R groups indicated that the current eMciency for the formation of (2) was not affeted by bulky groups such as isopropyl and cyclohexyl. The current efficiency for the'formation of (2) was remarkably decreased by the substitution of phenyl group. However, the introduction of methylene group between phenyl and carbonyl group showed the tendency of increasing current efficiency slightly.

Synthesis of Polymers with Charged Heteroatoms in the Chain by the “Onium Polymerization” Method

AbstractThe method of “onium polymerization” was used for the preparation of conjugated polymers with quaternary nitrogen atoms in the main chain. The polymerization was studied for the case of 4‐chloropyridine, 4‐bromopyridine, and 4‐chloromethylpyridine. Poly‐4‐chloropyridine has increased electroconductivity and contains a considerable number of paramagnetic particles. The introduction of methylene groups between pyridinium nuclei results in the disappearance of this property. Poly‐4‐chloropyridine is soluble only in water, hydrolyzing rapidly to form pyridylpyridone and hydroxypyridine. Under the action of ammonia poly‐4‐chloromethylpyridine is transformed to the polymeric ilide.
