First Report of a Ganglion Cyst of the Short Head of the Biceps Femoris: A Rare Presentation

This is the first report of a ganglion cyst arising from the short head of the biceps femoris tendon. Intratendinous ganglion cyst is a very rare lesion with an unknown etiology that originates within the tendon. We encountered a case of a 30-year-old female who complained of persistent pain for 2 months in the proximal anterolateral part of the leg. An intratendinous ganglion cyst in the semimembranosus tendon of the short head of the biceps femoris was diagnosed and located by ultrasound. Three months after surgical excision, there we encountered no recurrence. We describe this case with a review of the relevant literature.

To present a case report about 53-year-old woman with intratendinous ganglion cyst in the long head of biceps humeri treated with ultrasound-guided aspiration and steroid injection.

Intratendinous ganglion cyst of peroneus brevis tendon and its reconstruction with semitendinosus graft

Introduction. A ganglion cyst is a common benign tumor, mainly found in the wrist and ankle. The ones originating from a tendon, such as in our case, are the most rare. The ganglion cyst presents with a variety of symptoms, offering a wide range of possible differential diagnoses. Physical examination is crucial to make an accurate diagnosis, but magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can help in identifying the ganglion cyst. The treatment is mostly conservative, but in cases when the ganglion cyst disables the patient?s ability for normal life functioning, due to pain and decreased mobility, surgery is necessary. Case report. A 38-year-old female with persistent ankle pain and edema was clinically diagnosed with luxation of peroneal tendons. Further investigation with MRI showed tenosynovitis of peroneal ten-dons and rupture of the superior peroneal retinaculum with an intratendinous ganglion cyst of peroneus brevis tendon. Surgical treatment with the reconstruction of peroneus brevis and peroneal retinaculum was performed with semitendinosus graft and anchor sutures. Histology confirmed the diagnosis of the intratendinous ganglion. After four months of rehabilitation, the patient returned to normal daily and sports activities and was pain-free on the follow-up. No recurrence of the ganglion cyst was acknowledged. Conclusion. Surgery is crucial for patients with intratendinous ganglion cyst and symptomatic instability of the peroneal tendons with chronic subluxation.

Intratendinous ganglion cyst of the extensor digitorum longus tendon: A case report

IntroductionGanglion cysts are benign lesions, common in the hand and wrist. Intratendinous ganglion, however, are rare. We present the first reported case of an intratendinous ganglion cyst in an extensor digitorum longus (EDL) tendon of the foot. Case reportA 35-year old presented with a left-sided painful dorsolateral foot swelling. Ultrasound suggested a ganglion cyst in proximity to the EDL tendon of the 5th toe. Two distinct swellings were identified on surgical exploration, including a 6×1cm ganglion lying within the EDL tendon substance that had resulted in tendon splitting. The lesions were excised and EDL tendon repaired. Histological analysis confirmed that both lesions were ganglion cysts. Post-operative recovery was uneventful. DiscussionIntratendinous ganglion cysts are rare lesions that pose a unique set of diagnostic and treatment challenges. Unlike conventional ganglion, their diagnosis may not be possible until surgical exploration. They have been reported to increase the risk of spontaneous tendon rupture. As such, a lower operative threshold should be applied to prevent their progression. A high index of suspicion should be applied to any ganglion reported radiologically to be in close contact with tendons. If diagnosed upon surgical exploration, it is essential that the operating surgeon is prepared to appropriately modify the procedure to involve primary tendon repair, tendon transfer or tenodesis.

Intratendinous Ganglion of the Extensor Digitorum Tendon

Ganglion cysts are the most common soft-tissue tumors of the hand. They are rarely found in specific anatomic structures such as the nerve, bone, and tendon. Intratendinous form of ganglion cyst is occasionally found in the hand. Only 10 cases in English papers and 7 cases in domestic papers on ganglion cysts in extensor digitorum tendons have been reported since its introduction in 1985. This study reports 2 cases of intratendinous ganglion cysts arising from the second and fourth extensor digitorum tendons and discusses general features and surgical plans for this entity.

Symptomatic Intratendinous Ganglion Cyst of the Patellar Tendon

Ganglion cysts have been previously described throughout the body, most commonly about the wrist, hand, knee, ankle, and feet. When symptomatic, they may interfere with joint mechanics, resulting in snapping, catching, and locking. Intratendinous ganglion cysts lack a synovial epithelial lining and are thought to develop from the mucoid degeneration of connective tissue caused by chronic irritation, chronic repetitive injury, and chronic ischemia. On magnetic resonance imaging, ganglion cysts originating from tendons, ligaments, tendon sheaths, menisci, or joint capsules appear as well-defined lobulated masses that follow simple or complex fluid signal intensity on all pulse sequences, with enhancing walls and internal septations on post-contrast images. There may be appreciable degeneration and partial tearing of the structure of origin, particularly if associated with tendons. On ultrasonography, they present as hypoechoic masses, with internal septations and lobulations of varying sizes, without significant vascularity on power or color Doppler sampling. A thin fluid neck extending from the structure of origin (tail sign), when present, is a reliable sign of a ganglion cyst. This article describes a sonographically guided technique to treat symptomatic ganglion cysts within the patellar tendon. Complete evacuation of the ganglion cyst, with disappearance of the tail sign, is considered the determining factor for a successful procedure. A similar technique can be used for the treatment of other symptomatic intratendinous ganglion cysts elsewhere in the body. To our knowledge, symptomatic intratendinous ganglion cysts within the patellar tendon and their treatment have not been previously reported.

Intratendinous ganglion cyst is a very rare lesion with an unknown aetiology that originates within the tendon. We encountered a case of 43-year-old woman who complained of a palpable, non-tender mass in the thigh with increasing swelling. An intratendinous ganglion cyst in the semimembranosus tendon of the lower extremity was diagnosed and located by ultrasound and MRI. Nine months after a surgical excision, there were recurrent ganglion cysts along the semimembranosus tendon. We describe this case with a review of the relevant literature.

Intratendinous ganglion of peroneus tertius–A case report

Abstract We present a case report of a 48-year-old male with an intratendinous ganglion cyst of the peroneus tertius. He complained of occasional pins and needles on the dorsum of the foot. Surgical exploration revealed a ganglion, completely contained in the expanded peroneus tertius tendon, in front of the lateral malleolus. A few fibres of the tendon were sacrificed for complete excision. The cutaneous branch of the superficial peroneal nerve, which was lying over the ganglion, was preserved. At 6-month follow-up he was completely asymptomatic. Intratendinous ganglion of peroneus tertius can cause impingement on the cutaneous branch of superficial peroneal nerve and cause sensory symptoms. Careful preservation of the nerve with complete excision gives excellent results.
