Inter - and intraspecific phenotypic variation in co-occurring invasive and introduced cyprinid fish species

A species introduced outside of its native range will likely encounter unusual abiotic and biotic conditions,and may exhibit phenotypic traits that may facilitate survival and persistance. Phenotypic plasticity drives non-native species' development of adaptive traits in the new environment, increases their fitness, and as a result, contributes to invasion success. In this study, we examined inter and intraspecific phenotypic variation (body size and shape) for an invasive (Carassius gibelio) and introduced (Cyprinus carpio) cyprinid fish species (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) in the Düden Stream, Turkey, which is a small-scale river system. We hypothesized that interspecific phenotypic variation correlates with fish-specific variables and river site. We further hypothesized that these two species may exhibit similar phenotypic variation patterns between populations. The MANCOVA revealed that species-specific traits, river site, had significant effects on body shape variation and size along the stream. The differences in the shape of the head, the central portion of the body, and fins in both species most probably reflected differences in the swimming and feeding of the fish, possibly to avoid interspecies competition. The intraspecific phenotypic variation observed in both species may indicate rapid local adaptation, triggered by multiple founding event, or/and phenotypic plasticity.

Phylogeography and climate shape the quantitative genetic landscape and range‐wide plasticity of a prevalent conifer

AbstractThe contribution of genetic adaptation and plasticity to intraspecific phenotypic variability remains insufficiently studied in long‐lived plants, as well as the relevance of neutral versus adaptive processes determining such divergence. We examined the importance of phylogeographic structure and climate in modulating genetic and plastic changes and their interdependence in fitness‐related traits of a widespread Mediterranean conifer (Pinus pinaster). Four marker‐based, previously defined neutral classifications along with two ad hoc climate‐based categorizations of 123 range‐wide populations were analyzed for their capacity to summarize genetic and plastic effects of height growth and survival (age 20) in 15 common gardens. The plasticity of tree height and differential survival were interpreted through mixed modeling accounting for heteroscedasticity in the genotype‐by‐environment dataset. The analysis revealed a slight superiority of phylogeographic classifications over climate categorizations on the explanation of genetic and plastic effects, which suggests that neutral processes can be at least as important as isolation by climate as a driving factor of evolutionary divergence in a prevalent pine. The best phylogeographic classification involved eight geographically discrete genetic groups, which explained 92% (height) and 52% (survival) of phenotypic variability, including between‐group mean differentiation and differential expression across trials. For height growth, there was high predictability of plastic group responses described by different reaction norm slopes, which were unrelated to between‐group mean differentiation. The latter differences (amounting to ca. 40% among groups) dominated intraspecific performance across trials. Local adaptation was evident for genetic groups tested in their native environments in terms of tree height and, especially, survival. This finding was supported by QST > FST estimates. Additionally, our range‐wide evaluation did not support a general adaptive syndrome by which less reactive groups to ameliorated conditions would be associated with high survival and low growth. In fact, a lack of relationship between mean group differentiation, indicative of genetic adaptation, and predictable group plasticity for height growth suggests different evolutionary trajectories of these mechanisms of phenotypic divergence. Altogether, the existence of predictable adaptive‐trait phenotypic variation for the species, involving both genetic differentiation and plastic effects, should facilitate integrating genomics and environment into decision‐making tools to assist forests in coping with climate change.

Effects of environmental translocation and host characteristics on skin microbiomes of sun-basking fish.

Variation in the composition of skin-associated microbiomes has been attributed to host species, geographical location and habitat, but the role of intraspecific phenotypic variation among host individuals remains elusive. We explored if and how host environment and different phenotypic traits were associated with microbiome composition. We conducted repeated sampling of dorsal and ventral skin microbiomes of carp individuals (Cyprinus carpio) before and after translocation from laboratory conditions to a semi-natural environment. Both alpha and beta diversity of skin-associated microbiomes increased substantially within and among individuals following translocation, particularly on dorsal body sites. The variation in microbiome composition among hosts was significantly associated with body site, sun-basking, habitat switch and growth, but not temperature gain while basking, sex, personality nor colour morph. We suggest that the overall increase in the alpha and beta diversity estimates among hosts were induced by individuals expressing greater variation in behaviours and thus exposure to potential colonizers in the pond environment compared with the laboratory. Our results exemplify how biological diversity at one level of organization (phenotypic variation among and within fish host individuals) together with the external environment impacts biological diversity at a higher hierarchical level of organization (richness and composition of fish-associated microbial communities).

Phenotypic variation and genomic variation in insect virulence traits reveal patterns of intraspecific diversity in a locust-specific fungal pathogen.

Intraspecific pathogen diversity is crucial for understanding the evolution and maintenance of adaptation in host-pathogen interactions. Traits associated with virulence are often a significant source of variation directly impacted by local selection pressures. The specialist fungal entomopathogen, Metarhizium acridum, has been widely implemented as a biological control agent of locust pests in tropical regions of the world. However, few studies have accounted for natural intraspecific phenotypic and genetic variation. Here, we examine the diversity of nine isolates of M. acridum spanning the known geographic distribution, in terms of (1) virulence towards two locust species, (2) growth rates on three diverse nutrient sources, and (3) comparative genomics to uncover genomic variability. Significant variability in patterns of virulence and growth was shown among the isolates, suggesting intraspecific ecological specialization. Different patterns of virulence were shown between the two locust species, indicative of potential host preference. Additionally, a high level of diversity among M. acridum isolates was observed, revealing increased variation in subtilisin-like proteases from the Pr1 family. These results culminate in the first in-depth analysis regarding multiple facets of natural variation in M. acridum, offering opportunities to understand critical evolutionary drivers of intraspecific diversity in pathogens.

Little evidence for land-use filters on intraspecific trait variation in three arthropod groups

Abstract. Declines in species richness and abundance of insects over the last decades are often driven by anthropogenic land use and can have severe consequences for ecosystem functioning. Many studies investigated the effects of land-use intensification on the distribution of phenotypic traits across species at the community level, often with mixed results. However, biotic and abiotic environmental filters and potential selection act on individuals within each species, i.e., at the species' population level, and thus drive the extent of intraspecific phenotypic variation. Here, we compare the morphological trait variation within selected species of dung beetles, bees and grasshoppers and link this variation to land-use intensity in forests and grasslands. Selected traits included absolute body size measures and relative leg, wing or eye size, or shape and are often interpreted as “functional traits” in the context of specific ecological responses or effects. We predicted that trait variability among individuals of arthropod species is reduced in intensively used ecosystems (with pronounced environmental filtering) compared to low-intensity ones, particularly for arthropod species that were more abundant in intensively used sites (“land-use winners” compared to “losers”). In general, only few effects of land-use intensity on trait variation were found showing a decreasing variation with increasing land-use intensity in forests but an increasing variation in grasslands. Although many studies confirmed strong land-use impacts on species composition, diversity and trait distribution, including evidence from the same land-use gradients, we were not able to confirm consistent effects at the intraspecific level. However, the choice of which traits are included in analyses and the linkage between phenotypic variation and genetic variability can strongly influence the conclusions drawn on ecological processes. Therefore, we suggest extending the use of intraspecific trait variation on other, more specific response or effect traits and a broader range of species in future studies.

Provenance, genotype, and flooding influence growth and resource acquisition characteristics in a clonal, riparian shrub.

Riparian plants can exhibit intraspecific phenotypic variability across the landscape related to temperature and flooding gradients. Phenotypes that vary across a climate gradient are often partly genetically determined and may differ in their response to inundation. Changes to inundation patterns across a climate gradient could thus result in site-specific inundation responses. Phenotypic variability is more often studied in riparian trees, yet riparian shrubs are key elements of riparian systems and may differ from trees in phenotypic variability and environmental responses. We tested whether individuals of a clonal, riparian shrub, Pluchea sericea, collected from provenances spanning a temperature gradient differed in their phenotypes and responses to inundation and to what degree any differences were related to genotype. Plants were subjected to different inundation depths and a subset genotyped. Variables related to growth and resource acquisition were measured and analyzed using hierarchical, multivariate Bayesian linear regressions. Individuals from different provenances differed in their phenotypes, but not in their response to inundation. Phenotypes were not related to provenance temperature but were partially governed by genotype. Growth was more strongly influenced by inundation, while resource acquisition was more strongly controlled by genotype. Growth and resource acquisition responses in a clonal, riparian shrub are affected by changes to inundation and plant demographics in unique ways. Shrubs appear to differ from trees in their responses to environmental change. Understanding environmental effects on shrubs separately from those of trees will be a key part of evaluating impacts of environmental change on riparian ecosystems.

Resident-Disperser Differences and Genetic Variability Affect Communities in Microcosms.

AbstractDispersal is a key process mediating ecological and evolutionary dynamics. Its effects on the dynamics of spatially structured systems, population genetics, and species range distribution can depend on phenotypic differences between dispersing and nondispersing individuals. However, scaling up the importance of resident-disperser differences to communities and ecosystems has rarely been considered, in spite of intraspecific phenotypic variability being an important factor mediating community structure and productivity. Here, we used the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila, in which phenotypic traits are known to differ between residents and dispersers, to test (i) whether these resident-disperser differences affect biomass and composition in competitive communities composed of four other Tetrahymena species and (ii) whether these effects are genotype dependent. We found that dispersers led to a lower community biomass compared with residents. This effect was highly consistent across the 20 T. thermophila genotypes used, despite intraspecific variability in resident-disperser phenotypic differences. We also found a significant genotypic effect on biomass production, showing that intraspecific variability has consequences for communities. Our study suggests that individual dispersal strategy can scale up to community productivity in a predictable way, opening new perspectives to the functioning of spatially structured ecosystems.

Host-associated Intraspecific Phenotypic Variation in the Saprobic Fungus Phlebiopsis gigantea

Whether intraspecific phenotypic variation in saprobic fungi may be driven by the host of origin has received little attention. We addressed this issue by testing hypotheses using the model system Phlebiopsis gigantea, a wood destroying fungus associated with Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris, among others, and widely employed in practical forestry as a biological control agent. By examining approximately 60 sympatric P. gigantea isolates from both P. abies and P. sylvestris, we showed that the former grew in vitro significantly (P < 0.05) slower than the latter (average 5.56 mm/day vs. 6.84) while producing 1.8-fold significantly higher number of mitospores. An overall significant trade-off between these two phenotypic traits was detected, in particular for isolates originating from P. abies. Comparative inoculation experiments of a subsample of isolates and the assessment of mycelial growth in logs of both hosts allowed to reject the hypothesis that isolates are equally fit in terms of growth rate in wood of both hosts regardless of the host of origin. Tree models revealed that the growth rate of isolates was associated not only with the wood species in which the isolates were inoculated (P < 0.001), P. sylvestris being more rapidly colonized than P. abies, but also with the host of origin of isolates (P < 0.001). Results showed that P. gigantea isolates originating from different hosts differ phenotypically in terms of some key phenotypic traits demonstrating that a host-driven intraspecific phenotypic variation may occur in saprobic fungi.

Hedging at the rear edge: Intraspecific trait variability drives the trajectory of marginal populations in a widespread boreal tree species

Abstract Rear‐edge populations at the warm margin of species distribution are small, isolated and face environmental conditions at the limit of species bioclimatic envelope. Intraspecific phenotypic variation contributing to the persistence of peripheral populations is expected to become increasingly important under future climate conditions to avoid local extirpation where range shifts lag behind climate change velocity. We investigated the putative role of intraspecific phenotypic variation for the maintenance of rear‐edge populations of fire‐prone jack pine (Pinus banksiana), an obligate pyriscent boreal species. We assessed whether variation in cone serotiny is associated with the population trajectory of marginal stands located south of the boreal biome, in the temperate forest where natural wildfires are infrequent and unpredictable. To this end, we estimated stand‐scale serotiny, minimal age and tree size structure in 26 jack pine stands from the rear edge (n = 17 sites) and the core (n = 9 sites) of the species' range in eastern Canada. On average, rear‐edge jack pine populations are less serotinous albeit more variably compared with range‐core populations where serotiny is more uniformly high. Rear‐edge stands are generally older and display reverse J‐shape tree size structure indicative of a multi‐aged demographic equilibrium, whereas range‐core stands are younger and show a unimodal stand structure depicting a single ageing cohort generally lacking interfire recruitment. Eco‐evolutionary dynamics shifts from a dependency on wildfires in range‐core populations to stands that can regenerate and persist without recurrent fires at the rear edge, where stand‐scale serotiny reaches values below 85%. Synthesis. Unlike range‐core populations, rear‐edge jack pine populations can locally rely on a dual life‐history strategy to ensure both steady recruitment during fire‐free intervals and successful postfire regeneration. This capacity to cope with infrequent and unpredictable fire regime should increase the resilience and resistance of jack pine populations as global changes alter fire dynamics of the boreal forest. More generally, unique intraspecific phenotypic variation in rear‐edge populations contributes to long‐term species persistence in marginal environmental conditions that might scale up with global changes. The conservation of rear‐edge populations and their genetic legacy appears crucial for the resilience of species.

Inter- and Intraspecific Variation Patterns of Leaf Phenotypic Traits in Two Sympatric Pine Species

Individual persistence under changing climate conditions can be aided by phenotypic plasticity. Needle morphology reflects pine species’ adaptation to their habitats, and adaptive plasticity is beneficial to pine survival. As two closely related pines, Pinusmassoniana Lamb. and Pinus hwangshanensis W. Y. Hsia sympatrically occur in the subtropical region of China, forming hilly forests (i.e., subtropical evergreen needleleaf forests) at lower elevations and montane forests (i.e., temperate evergreen needleleaf forests) at medium and high elevations. However, little is known about the intraspecific phenotypic variation patterns of the two pine species and their relationship with environmental factors. Here, we investigated the interspecific and intraspecific variation patterns of needle traits in the two sympatric pine species, focusing on six traits—i.e., leaf length, leaf thickness, leaf width, leaf area, specific leaf area, and leaf dry matter content—as well as the relationship between needle traits and environmental factors. We found significant phenotypic trait differences among populations of each species. Except for leaf length and leaf width, variation within species was greater than variation between species in the needle traits measured. Even more intriguingly, the leaf size traits (i.e., length, width, thickness) were more conservative than the leaf economic traits (i.e., specific leaf area and leaf dry matter content). In other words, the intraspecific variability of the former was weaker than that of the latter. The nature of P. massoniana needle traits was mainly shaped by latitude, while the needle traits of P. hwangshanensis were significantly affected by annual precipitation. Therefore, phenotypic plasticity may be an essential mechanism for the two pine species to better cope with changing external conditions. The intraspecific variation patterns found in the two pine species and the relationships between traits and environmental factors can provide substantial scientific data for large-scale exploration of intraspecific phenotypic variation in pine species and their breeding practice.

Intraspecific diversity of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) populations in eastern Canada

The threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) is a small, mesopredatory fish that is widespread in coastal regions of the northern hemisphere. Although studied extensively as a model organism in evolutionary biology, behavioral ecology, genomics, and numerous related subfields, this research relies heavily on populations from the Pacific coastal regions of North America and Asia, and those of northern Europe. However, based on the morphology of some western Atlantic populations, the different ecological context, and the evolutionary history of the species, not all of the knowledge gained from Pacific and European lineages is likely to be fully transferrable to the populations of North America’s East Coast. Nevertheless, work in eastern Canada does suggest high levels of intraspecific phenotypic diversity and local adaptation, though much of this diversity may be under threat from climate change, altered land use patterns, and introduced species. These factors warrant a research program focused on broad sampling of previously identified populations, identifying previously undocumented populations, determining whether there are unique genetic mechanisms underlying the unusual trait combinations present in the region, and exploring novel community interactions. Such a research program would facilitate future studies in ecology, conservation, and evolution by documenting phenotypic changes and establish baselines for future work. Because the work on nearshore marine threespine stickleback populations is sparse in the western Atlantic, I focus here on freshwater populations—with the exception of a brief discussion of the “white” stickleback populations of Nova Scotia—but this is not to suggest that nearshore marine populations are not phenotypically diverse.

Diversity and Phylogenetic Position of Bothrostoma Stokes, 1887 (Ciliophora: Metopida), with Description of Four New Species

Bothrostoma is a genus of anaerobic ciliates in family Metopidae comprising four species, all described based solely on the morphology of living and fixed cells. Unlike other metopids, cells of Bothrostoma are not twisted anteriorly, have a flattened preoral dome, a very prominent sail-like paroral membrane, and an adoral zone of distinctive, very narrow, curved membranelles confined to a wide, non-spiraling peristome on the ventral side. We examined 20 populations of Bothrostoma from hypoxic freshwater sediments. We provide morphological characterization and 18S rRNA gene sequences of four new species, namely B. bimicronucleatum sp. nov., B. boreale sp. nov., B. kovalyovi sp. nov., and B. robustum sp. nov., as well as B. undulans (type species), B. nasutum, and B. ovale comb. nov. (original combination Metopus undulans var. ovalis Kahl, 1932). Except for B. nasutum, Bothrostoma species show low genetic variability among geographically distant populations. Intraspecific phenotypic variability might be driven by environmental conditions. In phylogenetic analyses, Bothrostoma is not closely related to Metopus sensu stricto and forms a moderately supported clade with Planometopus, here referred to as BoPl clade. The anterior axial torsion of the body, typical of other Metopidae, appears to have been lost in the last common ancestor of the BoPl clade.

Variation in avian morphology along a short tropical elevational gradient

AbstractPatterns across species of intraspecific phenotypic variation with environment can shed light on the underlying drivers of adaptive evolution. Phenotypic variation within a species along tropical elevational gradients is of particular interest because species with narrow elevational ranges may still experience considerably varied environmental conditions. Here, we examine morphological variation in 27 tropical bird species, spanning 11 families and 3 orders, across a 675 m elevational gradient in Western Ecuador. We analyzed a data set of six morphological variables in 3263 individual birds using multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVAs) and canonical correlation analyses (CCAs). We found that morphology varies significantly with elevation in 8 species, and that spatial segregation by age or sex was apparently not responsible for this result. The phenotypic traits that varied with elevation varied strongly by species. To the best of our knowledge, morphological variation over equally short elevational and horizontal distances across a diverse suite of vertebrate species has not previously been demonstrated.Abstract in Spanish is available with online material.

Symbiont-induced intraspecific phenotypic variation enhances plastic trapping and ingestion in biogenic habitats

Plastic contamination has major effects on biodiversity, enhancing the consequences of other forms of global anthropogenic disturbance such as climate change and habitat fragmentation. Despite this and the recognised importance of intraspecific diversity, we still know relatively little about how plastic pollution affects diversity below the species level. Here, we assessed the effects of intraspecific variation in a habitat forming species (the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis) on the trapping and ingestion of microplastics. We focused on symbiont-induced phenotypic variation in mussel beds. Using fractal analysis, we measured an increase in the complexity of mussel bed surfaces by ca. 15% caused by phototropic shell-degrading endoliths. By simulating high tide flow conditions and incoming waves, we found that symbionts significantly increased microplastic accumulation in mussel beds. This likely reflects deceleration of near-bed flow velocities, creation of turbulence in the bottom boundary layer and consequently increased particle retention. This effect was not constant at high tide, with no effect of infestation on retention at the base of the mussel bed under mid and high flow conditions and reduced microplastic trapping on the surface of mussel shells. Nevertheless, under natural conditions, the ingestion and trapping of microplastic were higher by the mussels comprising beds with symbionts than those in beds without symbionts. Given the dependency of many species on mussel biogenic habitats, there is an increased risk of plastics moving up the food chain in mussel beds infested by symbiotic endoliths. Our results highlight how the effects of within-species phenotypic diversity may influence the consequences of rising levels of plastic pollution.

Long-term effects of temperature on growth, energy density, whole-body composition and aerobic scope of age-0 Lake sturgeon (A. fulvescens)

Fish are known to show high intraspecific phenotypic variation during early life history. Specifically environmental temperature during early life can result in developmental plasticity, which will influence developmental trajectory and ultimately individual fitness. In the present study, we examined long-term effects of early rearing temperature on growth, energy density, body composition (i.e., whole body glucose, triglyceride and protein concentration) and aerobic scope of age-0 Lake Sturgeon (A. fulvescens) to determine if temperature manipulation after yolk absorption would have a long-term impact on these traits. At 58 days post hatch, fish were subjected to one of three temperature manipulations (16 °C; control, 18 °C and ambient river temperature in a range of 14.0–19.4 °C; Ambient) for 35 days after which all fish were raised in Ambient conditions until 360 days post hatch, including 4 months of natural winter temperatures. We hypothesized that temperature conditions experienced before the first winter of life would result in short-term effects of improved growth and energy reserves. Our results showed that temperature manipulation may result in a short-term, reversible effect of improved growth prior to overwintering without a longer-term effect on growth. Enhanced somatic growth of total length and body mass prior to winter did not translate into improved energy reserves, and observed differences in growth rate between treatments did not correlate with aerobic scope. Our data demonstrate that a subtle change in temperature during early life history in Lake Sturgeon may result in short term positive effects on growth rate. These data may enhance current conservation aquaculture operations to promote winter survival in fall released fingerlings without long-term implications on growth phenotypes.

Colour pattern variation forms local background matching camouflage in a leaf-mimicking toad.

Optimal camouflage can, in principle, be relatively easily achieved in simple, homogeneous, environments where backgrounds always have the same colour, brightness and patterning. Natural environments are, however, rarely homogenous, and species often find themselves viewed against varied backgrounds where the task of concealment is more challenging. One result of variable backgrounds is the evolution of intraspecific phenotypic variation which may either be generalized, with multiple similarly cryptic patterns, or specialized, with each discrete colour form maximizing concealment against a single component of the background. We investigated the role of phenotypic variation in a highly variable population of the Neotropical toad Rhinella margaritifera using visual modelling and a computer-based detection task. We found that phenotypic variation was not divided into discrete colour morphs, and all toads were well camouflaged against the forest floor. However, although the whole population may appear to consist of random samples from the background, the toads were a particularly close match to the leaf litter, suggesting that they masquerade as dead leaves, which are themselves variable. Furthermore, rather than each colour form being equally effective against a single background, each toad was specialized towards its own particular local surroundings, as suggested by a specialist strategy. Taken together, these data highlight the importance of background matching to a nominally masquerading species, as well as how habitat heterogeneity at multiple spatial scales may affect the evolution of camouflage and phenotypic variation.

Beneath the Leaf-Litter: Can Salamander Personality Influence Forest-Floor Dynamics?

Ecological research demonstrates how intraspecific phenotypic variation can have consequences for community dynamics. However, the effects of animal personalities (i.e., intraspecific behavioral variation) on ecological processes remains relatively understudied. Using Red-backed Salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) and the detrital food web as a model system, we conducted a laboratory mesocosm experiment to explore whether or not the personality type of a top-level predator could affect the community structure within a complex, terrestrial food web. We used behavioral assays to investigate the repeatability of salamander behaviors, and classified individuals as either active or inactive. We then subjected laboratory mesocosms to one of four treatments for 3 mo: one active salamander, one inactive salamander, control (no salamander), and a pre-experimental reference. Our results indicate that the effect of P. cinereus on the detrital food web might be behaviorally mediated, with only the most active salamanders affecting community structure. Specifically, mesocosms housing active salamanders contained less diverse invertebrate communities than all other treatments. This difference was primarily driven by springtails, which were more abundant within mesocosms housing active salamanders. We also found that salamander personality was associated with cover board use inside mesocosms, with inactive salamanders exhibiting a more philopatric use of cover objects than active individuals. Leaf-litter degradation did not differ between treatments, indicating that the ecological effects of salamanders were too weak to influence basal resources within the detrital food web. Our study prompts further questions regarding the potential for animal personalities to influence ecological processes within terrestrial communities.

During the COVID-19 lockdown we had more opportunities to observe biodiversity around our homes. On one occasion, I observed a common Indian house crow (Corvus splendens) with uncommon white patches on its plumage, quite unlike the characteristic black body and gray neck of most house crows. The white patches distinguished the crow from hundreds of other members of its species thriving in the area. This crow’s atypical plumage was due to a congenital genetic condition called leucism, a partial or complete loss of coloration. Leucistic birds retain the normal color of their eyes and beak but may exhibit various degrees of reduced pigmentation in their feathers or skin. Leucism differs from albinism in that the former is controlled by a single recessive allele while the latter is associated with several genes. It has also been associated with the expression of mutant alleles or deviations of gene expression that disrupt pigmentation during feather development. The incidence of leucism in wild bird populations scarcely exceeds 1%. Observing an abnormally colored bird provides insight into intraspecific phenotypic variability as well as how variations persist in nature. How does looking different affect their survival, inter- and intraspecific interactions, mating success, and foraging behaviors? Long-term observations are needed to better understand the ecology of such rare leucistic birds.

Integrative assessment of intraspecific diversification in Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus) provides insight on the geographic pattern of phenotypic divergence and process of speciation

Integrated studies of the geographical, ecological, and historical factors that shape intraspecific phenotypic and genetic variation can help us to decipher the processes leading to geographic patterns of population divergence and speciation. We quantify and compare morphological and genetic variation in the Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus Linnaeus, 1766), a broadly distributed passerine in North America with both migratory and non-migratory populations that occupy a diversity of habitats and topographies. The geographic distributions and patterns of differentiation among subspecies suggest that migration has strongly impacted population divergence, including the habit of migrating itself, but also dispersal. Patterns of mitochondrial and nuclear genetic differentiation can be attributed to female-biased dispersal and to increased dispersal rates and distances in migratory populations. Weak phenotypic differentiation among migratory versus migratory and non-migratory populations suggest that migration may more strongly affect morphology than adaptation to local habitats. Our results generally support previous subspecific designations with two notable exceptions. We found little genetic differentiation between two subspecies (Lanius ludovicianus gambeli Ridgway, 1887 and Lanius ludovicianus mexicanus C.L. Brehm, 1854), but identify a new, distinct subspecies, which we refer to as Lanius ludovicianus centralis ssp. nov.

Distinct Phenotypes Associated with Mangrove and Lagoon Habitats in Two Widespread Caribbean Corals, Porites astreoides and Porites divaricata

AbstractAs coral reefs experience dramatic declines in coral cover throughout the tropics, there is an urgent need to understand the role that non-reef habitats, such as mangroves, play in the ecological niche of corals. Mangrove habitats present a challenge to reef-dwelling corals because they can differ dramatically from adjacent reef habitats with respect to key environmental parameters, such as light. Because variation in light within reef habitats is known to drive intraspecific differences in coral phenotype, we hypothesized that coral species that can exploit both reef and mangrove habitats will exhibit predictable differences in phenotypes between habitats. To investigate how intraspecific variation, driven by either local adaptation or phenotypic plasticity, might enable particular coral species to exploit these two qualitatively different habitat types, we compared the phenotypes of two widespread Caribbean corals, Porites divaricata and Porites astreoides, in mangrove versus lagoon habitats on Turneffe Atoll, Belize. We document significant differences in colony size, color, structural complexity, and corallite morphology between habitats. In every instance, the phenotypic differences between mangrove prop root and lagoon corals exhibited consistent trends in both P. divaricata and P. astreoides. We believe this study is the first to document intraspecific phenotypic diversity in corals occupying mangrove prop root versus lagoonal patch reef habitats. A difference in the capacity to adopt an alternative phenotype that is well suited to the mangrove habitat may explain why some reef coral species can exploit mangroves, while others cannot.
