Intolerance of Uncertainty Levels in Families of Children with Special Needs During Covid-19 Process

The objective of this study was to investigate the levels of intolerance of uncertainty among families of children with special needs during the Covid-19 pandemic, with respect to various factors. The study utilized a relational survey model and included 250 families of children with special needs who participated in the research during the Fall academic year of 2020-2021. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic's unavoidable circumstances, data were collected electronically via Google Forms. To gather the data, a "Demographic Information Form" and an "Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale" were administered. The obtained data were analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 software. The results indicated that families of children with special needs had a higher level of intolerance of uncertainty, as indicated by the scale's overall scores and the prospective anxiety sub-dimension(p>0.05). The study further revealed that the families' income level and whether one of their relatives had Covid-19 significantly impacted their intolerance of uncertainty levels(p>0.05). However, there were no significant differences based on the families' age, gender, marital status, Covid-19 status, loss of a loved one due to Covid-19, chronic illness, or job loss during the pandemic(p>0.05).Based on studies examining the intolerance of families of children with special needs to uncertainty, efforts can be made to provide psychological support to families of children with special needs.Seminars can be organized for families of children with special needs by institution managers or special education teachers.

Stress, anxiety, intolerance of uncertainty, and psychological well-being characteristics of pregnant women with and without threatened miscarriage: a case-control study

The aim of this study was to examine the stress, anxiety, intolerance of uncertainty, and psychological well-being of pregnant women with and without threatened miscarriage. This is a case-control study. The research was carried out between January 2022 and March 2022 in the early pregnancy service and obstetrics clinic of the only training and research hospital in a province in the Central Anatolian Region of Turkey. Two hundred and one pregnant women with threatened miscarriage constituted the study group and 201 pregnant women without threatened miscarriage constituted the control group. A total of 402 pregnant women were included in the study. Stress, anxiety, and intolerance of uncertainty were found to be important risk factors affecting the psychological well-being of pregnant women with threatened miscarriage at a rate of 52% (F = 63,196, p < 0.001). In addition, the pregnant women with threatened miscarriage had higher levels of stress, anxiety, and intolerance of uncertainty, and their psychological well-being was considerably lower compared to pregnant women without threatened miscarriage (p < 0.05). There was a moderate and negative relationship between psychological well-being and intolerance of uncertainty (p < 0.05). It was determined that stress, anxiety, and uncertainty of pregnant women with threatened miscarriage were considerably higher compared to controls, and their psychological well-being was adversely affected. Health professionals should evaluate the levels of anxiety, stress, intolerance of uncertainty, and psychological well-being of pregnant women, especially in the routine follow-up of pregnant women with threatened miscarriage, and they should provide holistic care, not only physiologically but also bio-psychosocially. IMPACT STATEMENT What is already known on this subject? Although there are many studies on the emotional and psychological effects of miscarriage, there are limited studies on the effect of threatened miscarriage on the mental health of pregnant women. What do the results of this study add? Stress, anxiety, and intolerance to uncertainty were found to be important associated risk factors that negatively affect the psychological well-being of pregnant women with threatened miscarriage. It was determined that the pregnant women with threatened miscarriage had higher levels of stress, anxiety, intolerance to uncertainty, and their psychological well-being was much lower than the pregnant women without threatened miscarriage. It was determined that there was a moderate and negative relationship between the mean psychological well-being of pregnant women and the mean scores of intolerance to uncertainty. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? This is the first case-control study to examine the determination of stress, anxiety, intolerance to uncertainty and psychological well-being of pregnant women with and without threatened miscarriage. Health professionals should evaluate the anxiety, stress, intolerance of uncertainty levels and psychological well-being of pregnant women, especially in the routine follow-up of risky pregnant women, and should provide holistic care not only physiologically but also bio-psychosocially to these pregnant women with a holistic approach.

Broad and Narrow Transdiagnostic Risk Factors in Eating Disorders: A Preliminary Study on an Italian Clinical Sample.

Eating disorders are multifaceted psychopathologies and the transdiagnostic approach is currently considered a useful framework to understand their complexity. This preliminary study aimed to investigate both broad (i.e., intolerance of uncertainty and emotion dysregulation) and narrow (i.e., extreme body dissatisfaction) transdiagnostic risk factors underlying eating disorders. 50 Italian female patients seeking treatment for an eating disorder were involved (Mage = 31.6 years ± 12.8, 18–65). They completed self-report measures assessing emotion regulation difficulties, intolerance of uncertainty, extreme body dissatisfaction, general psychological distress, and eating disorder symptomatology. To explore whether the abovementioned transdiagnostic factors predicted patients’ psychological distress and eating disorder symptoms, two linear regressions were performed. Emotion dysregulation emerged as the only significant predictor of distress, while extreme body dissatisfaction was the only significant predictor of overall eating disorder symptomatology. Then, to analyze the differences between patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa in intolerance of uncertainty and emotion regulation problems, t-tests were conducted. The two groups differed significantly in intolerance of uncertainty levels only, with higher scores obtained by patients with anorexia nervosa. Overall, our findings suggest that emotion dysregulation and extreme body dissatisfaction may be relevant constructs in eating disorders in general, while intolerance of uncertainty may be more involved in restrictive eating disorders. The clinical implications of such results are discussed.

Mediator roles of resilience and intolerance of uncertainty in the effect of healthcare professionals’ coronavirus stigma on stress

ABSTRACT This study aims to examine the mediating roles of resilience and intolerance of uncertainty in the effect of healthcare professionals’ coronavirus stigma on perceived stress levels. A questionnaire survey was administered to 327 health workers at a training and research hospital in Ankara, Turkey. In this context, a regression analysis based on the bootstrapping method was performed by running the process macro model. This study determined that the level of coronavirus stigma had an indirect effect on perceived stress mediated by resilience (β = .0317). According to this finding, the level of coronavirus stigma reduces psychological resilience, and resilience reduces perceived stress. Additionally, intolerance of uncertainty partially mediates the effect of the coronavirus stigma level on perceived stress. Our results show that both resilience and intolerance of uncertainty levels are mediators of the effect of healthcare professionals’ coronavirus stigma levels on perceived stress levels. Necessary precautions should be taken to prevent stigmatization of health workers, which causes many negative consequences, as our study reveals. Otherwise, stigmatization may reduce the general functionality of healthcare professionals as an effective risk factor.

Levels of uncertainty, fear and satisfaction with health professionals: experiences of parents whose children are hospitalized for COVID-19

ABSTRACT This study tried to determine the fear and tolerance of uncertainty levels of the parents of children hospitalized with COVID-19, and their satisfaction with the health care received during this time. Data were collected from 130 literate parents. A significant difference was found between the mean scores on the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS-12) and the age of the parents and the presence of COVID-19 in other family members and the IUS-12. Also, a significant correlation was found between parents’ fear of COVID-19 and IUS-12 scores. Parents had good levels of satisfaction with health care received and moderate fear of COVID-19 and intolerance of uncertainty levels. As parents’ fear of COVID-19 increased, intolerance of uncertainty increased. The demographic characteristics, levels of fear of COVID-19, and intolerance of uncertainty did not affect the satisfaction levels.

The aim of the article was to study the role of personality and intelligence in prognostic tasks solving. The presented results were obtained in a sample of 78 participants. Seven methods were used: a computerized version of the prognostic task (based on V.N. Azarov`s task [1982]; an intelligence test and five psychodiagnostic questionnaires to assess personality traits and style characteristics. In the prognostic task, three measurable indicators of the possible strategy were considered: the ratio of available and missing information (awareness), the reasonableness of the possible choice by the available amount of the information (justifiability) and the change in the prognosis reasonableness due to the latest obtained information (trend). The correlations between intelligence measurement and preferred levels of awareness (r = 0.261, p &lt;0.05) and validity (r = 0.244, p &lt;0.05) were established. Two strategies of uncertainty control, differing by the use of the above-mentioned indicators were identified and described with the awareness-only oriented strategy seeming more successful. There were differences in the intolerance of uncertainty levels (measured by the New Questionnaire of Tolerance/Intolerance for Uncertainty by T.V. Kornilova [11]) in the individuals who preferred different strategies of uncertainty control (U = 558, p = 0.047). The participants who tried to use all the three indicators in solving the prognostic task were more uncertainty intolerant than the awareness-only oriented group.

The Relationship Between Anxiety and Intolerance of Uncertainty Levels in Individuals Who Received Liver Transplant: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study.

Studies have revealed that anxiety is associated with intolerance of uncertainty (IU); however, no study has examined the predictive effect of IU on anxiety in individuals with liver transplantation (LT). Therefore, this study aimed to identify the relationship between anxiety and IU levels in individuals who received LT. A descriptive cross-sectional study with a convenience sample (N = 118) was conducted at a center in eastern Turkey. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and hierarchical linear regression analysis. The mean scores for the dimensions of IU, state anxiety and trait anxiety were 34.42 ± 8.35, 40.38 ± 10.07, and 41.88 ± 7.53, respectively. IU and anxiety in individuals with LT were identified as related dynamics. Present findings suggest that uncertainty and IU can be considered in the conceptualization and treatment of anxiety and related pathologies. Nurses may seriously consider these results in order to increase the quality of the treatment and care provided to patients.

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and psychological well-being, and to examine the differences between these two variables in terms of gender, perceived income status, and perceived parental attitudes. Study group was composed of 426 undergraduates from various departments of Marmara, Sakarya, Anadolu, Yıldız Teknik and Sütçü İmam Universities. The data were gathered via Short Form of Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale, Psychological Well-Being Scale short form, and Personal Information Form. The data were analyzed by Pearson Product Moments Correlation, ANOVA, and t test. The results revealed that students with higher levels of intolerance of uncertainty had lower levels of psychological well-being, intolerance of uncertainty levels didn’t differ in terms of gender, and however psychological well-being levels of female students were significantly higher than those of males. Students who grown up with protective parental attitude had higher levels of intolerance of uncertainty than democratic parental attitude. In terms of psychological well-being, students who raised authoritarian parental attitudes had higher scores than protective parental attitude. Though intolerance of uncertainty levels didn’t differ in terms of perceived income levels of students, students with higher perceived income levels had higher scores of psychological well-being.
