Computed Rotational Collision Rate Coefficients for Recently Detected Anionic Cyanopolyynes

We report new results from quantum calculations of energy-transfer processes taking place in interstellar environments and involving two newly observed molecular species: C5N− and C7N− in collision with He atoms and p–H2 molecules. These species are part of the anionic molecular chains labeled as cyanopolyynes, which have been observed over the years in molecule-rich circumstellar envelopes and in molecular clouds. In the present work, we first carry out new ab initio calculations for the C7N− interaction potential with He atoms and then obtain state-to-state rotationally inelastic cross sections and rate coefficients involving the same transitions, which have been observed experimentally by emission in the interstellar medium (ISM) from both of these linear species. For the C5N−/He system, we extend the calculations already published in Biwas et al. to compare more directly the two molecular anions. We extend further the quantum calculations by also computing in this work collision rate coefficients for the hydrogen molecule interacting with C5N−, using our previously computed interaction potential. Additionally, we obtain the same rate coefficients for the C7N−/H2 system by using a scaling procedure that makes use of the new C7N−/He rate coefficients, as discussed in detail in the present paper. Their significance in affecting internal state populations in ISM environments where the anionic cyanopolyynes have been found is analyzed by using the concept of critical density indicators. Finally, similarities and differences between such species and the comparative efficiency of their collision rate coefficients are discussed. These new calculations suggest that, at least for the case of these longer chains, the rotational populations could reach local thermal equilibrium conditions within their observational environments.

Two-screen scattering in CRAFT FRBs

ABSTRACT Temporal broadening is a commonly observed property of fast radio bursts (FRBs), associated with turbulent media which cause radiowave scattering. Similarly to dispersion, scattering is an important probe of the media along the line of sight to an FRB source, such as the circumburst or circumgalactic media (CGM). Measurements of characteristic scattering times alone are insufficient to constrain the position of the dominant scattering media along the line of sight. However, where more than one scattering screen exists, Galactic scintillation can be leveraged to form strong constraints. We quantify the scattering and scintillation in 10 FRBs with (1) known host galaxies and redshifts and (2) captured voltage data enabling high-time resolution analysis. We find strong evidence for two screens in three cases. For FRBs 20190608B and 20210320C, we find evidence for scattering screens less than approximately 16.7 and 3000 kpc, respectively, from their sources, consistent with the scattering occurring in the circumburst environment, the host interstellar medium (ISM) or the CGM. For FRB 20201124A, we find a low modulation index that evolves over the burst’s scattering tail, indicating the presence of a scattering screen ≈9 kpc from the host, and excluding the circumburst environment from potential scattering sites. By assuming that pulse broadening is contributed by the host galaxy ISM or circumburst environment, the lack of observed scintillation in four FRBs in our sample suggests that existing models may be poor estimators of scattering times associated with the Milky Way’s ISM, similar to the anomalously low scattering observed for FRB 20201124A.

Shaken or Stirred: The Diffuse Interstellar Medium with Exceptionally High SiO Abundance

Interstellar shocks, a key element of stellar feedback processes, shape the structure of the interstellar medium (ISM) and are essential for the chemistry, thermodynamics, and kinematics of interstellar gas. Powerful, high-velocity shocks are driven by stellar winds, young supernova explosions, more evolved supernova remnants, cloud–cloud collisions, and protostellar outflows, whereas the existence and origin of much-lower-velocity shocks (≲10 km s−1) are not understood. Direct observational evidence for interstellar shocks in diffuse and translucent ISM environments has been especially lacking. We present the most sensitive survey to date of SiO—often considered an unambiguous tracer of interstellar shocks—in absorption, obtained with the Northern Extended Millimeter Array interferometer. We detect SiO in five of eight directions probing diffuse and translucent environments without ongoing star formation. Our results demonstrate that SiO formation in the diffuse ISM (i.e., in the absence of significant star formation and stellar feedback) is more widespread and effective than previously reported. The observed SiO line widths are all ≲4 km s−1, excluding high-velocity shocks as a formation mechanism. Yet, the SiO abundances we detect are mostly 1–2 orders of magnitude higher than those typically assumed in quiescent environments and are often accompanied by other molecular transitions whose column densities cannot be explained with UV-dominated chemical models. Our results challenge the traditional view of SiO production via stellar feedback sources and emphasize the need for observational constraints on the distribution of Si in the gas phase and grain mantles, which are crucial for understanding the physics of grain processing and the diffuse interstellar chemistry.

Theoretical Calculations of the Thermal Rate Coefficients for the Interstellar NH3+ + H2 → NH4+ + H Reaction on a New Δ-Machine Learning Potential Energy Surface

The NH3+ + H2 → NH4+ + H ion–molecule hydrogen-exchange reaction is important for understanding the mechanisms of ammonia formation in interstellar medium and circumstellar environments. The thermal rate coefficients of this reaction are calculated using the ring polymer molecular dynamics approach, which can account for the nuclear quantum effects, on a newly developed ab initio potential energy surface (PES). The PES was constructed by fitting a large number of ab initio points at the MP2/cc-pVDZ and CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ levels using a Δ-machine learning approach. The obtained rate coefficients exhibited a minimum at T ∼ 130 K, and this characteristic temperature-dependent behavior qualitatively agreed with the experimental measurements. This study confirms that quantum tunneling plays a significant role in the reaction dynamics along with the existence of the metastable NH3+···H2 pre-reactive complex in the entrance channel of the PES.

Cosmic-Ray Transport in Varying Galactic Environments

We study the propagation of mildly relativistic cosmic rays (CRs) in multiphase interstellar medium environments with conditions typical of nearby disk galaxies. We employ the techniques developed in Armillotta et al. to postprocess three high-resolution TIGRESS magnetohydrodynamic simulations modeling local patches of star-forming galactic disks. Together, the three simulations cover a wide range of gas surface density, gravitational potential, and star formation rate (SFR). Our prescription for CR propagation includes the effects of advection by the background gas, streaming along the magnetic field at the local ion Alfvén speed, and diffusion relative to the Alfvén waves, with the diffusion coefficient set by the balance between streaming-driven Alfvén wave excitation and damping mediated by local gas properties. We find that the combined transport processes are more effective in environments with higher SFR. These environments are characterized by higher-velocity hot outflows (created by clustered supernovae) that rapidly advect CRs away from the galactic plane. As a consequence, the ratio of midplane CR pressure to midplane gas pressures decreases with increasing SFR. We also use the postprocessed simulations to make predictions regarding the potential dynamical impacts of CRs. The relatively flat CR pressure profiles near the midplane argue that they would not provide significant support against gravity for most of the ISM mass. However, the CR pressure gradients are larger than the other pressure gradients in the extraplanar region (∣z∣ > 0.5 kpc), suggesting that CRs may affect the dynamics of galactic fountains and/or winds. The degree of this impact is expected to increase in environments with lower SFR.

Expanding the submillimeter wave spectroscopy and astronomical search for thioacetamide (CH3CSNH2) in the ISM

Context. One of the biggest unsolved mysteries of modern astrochemistry is understanding chemical formation pathways in the interstellar medium (ISM) and circumstellar environments. The detections (or even nondetections) of molecules composed of low-abundance atomic species (such as S, P, Si, and Mg) may help to constrain chemical pathways. Thioacetamide (CH3CSNH2) is the sulfur analog to acetemide (CH3CONH2) and it is a viable candidate to search for in astronomical environments – specifically toward regions where other S-bearing molecules have been found and, if possible, that also contain a detection of CH3CONH2. If detected, it would not only continue to expand the view of molecular complexity in astronomical environments, but also help to better elucidate the possible formation pathways of these types of species in these environments. Aims. Our aim is to expand the frequency range of the measured rotational spectrum of CH3CSNH2 beyond 150 GHz and then to use those measurements to extend the search for this species in the ISM. The new laboratory measurements and expanded search cover more parameter space for determining under what conditions CH3CSNH2 may be detected, leading to possible constraints on the formation of large S-bearing molecules found in the ISM. Methods. The rotational spectrum of CH3CSNH2 was investigated up to 650 GHz. Using the newly refined spectrum of CH3CSNH2, as well as additional spectroscopic data on the chemically related species CH3CONH2, a variety of astronomical sources were searched including data from the following large surveys: Prebiotic Interstellar Molecule Survey conducted with the Green Bank Telescope; Exploring molecular complexity with ALMA conducted with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array; and Astrochemical Surveys at IRAM conducted with the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique 30 m Telescope. Results. A total of 1428 transitions from the vt = 0 state with maximum values J = 47 and Ka = 20 in the range up to 330 GHz, and J = 95 and Ka = 20 in the range from 400–660 GHz were assigned. We also assigned 321 transitions from the vt = 1 state with the maximum values J = 35 and Ka = 9 up to 330 GHz. We achieved a final fit with a root-mean-square deviation of 43.4 kHz that contains 2035 measured lines from our study and the literature for vt = 0 and vt = 1 states of A and E symmetries. The final fit is based on the rho-axis-method Hamiltonian model that includes 40 parameters. An astronomical search for CH3CSNH2 was conducted based on all the new spectroscopic data. No transitions of CH3CSNH2 were detected toward any of the sources contained in our survey. Using the appropriate telescope and physical parameters for each astronomical source, upper limits to the column densities were found for CH3CSNH2 toward each source.

Upgrading the Field-Imaging Far-Infrared Line Spectrometer for the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy with kinetic inductance detectors: enabling large sample (extragalactic) surveys

We present the initial design, performance improvements, and science opportunities for an upgrade to the Field-Imaging Far-Infrared Line Spectrometer (FIFI-LS). FIFI-LS efficiently measures fine structure cooling lines, delivering critical constraints of the interstellar medium and star-forming environments. The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) provides the only far-infrared (FIR) observational capability in the world, making FIFI-LS a workhorse for FIR lines, combining optimal spectral resolution and a wide velocity range. Its continuous coverage of 51 to 203 μm makes FIFI-LS a versatile tool to investigate a multitude of diagnostic lines within our galaxy and in extragalactic environments. The sensitivity and field of view (FOV) of FIFI-LS are limited by its 90s-era photoconductor arrays. These limits can be overcome by upgrading the instrument using the latest developments in kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs). KIDs provide sensitivity gains in excess of 1.4 and allow larger arrays, enabling an increase in pixel count by an order of magnitude. This increase allows a wider FOV and instantaneous velocity coverage. The upgrade provides gains in point source observation speed by a factor >2 and in mapping speed by a factor >3.5, enabled by the improved sensitivity and pixel count. This upgrade has been proposed to NASA in response to the 2018 SOFIA Next Generation Instrumentation call.

Photodissociation region diagnostics across galactic environments

ABSTRACT We present three-dimensional astrochemical simulations and synthetic observations of magnetized, turbulent, self-gravitating molecular clouds. We explore various galactic interstellar medium environments, including cosmic ray ionization rates in the range of ζCR = 10−17–$10^{-14}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$, far-UV intensities in the range of G0 = 1–103 and metallicities in the range of Z = 0.1–$2\, {\rm Z}_{\odot }$. The simulations also probe a range of densities and levels of turbulence, including cases where the gas has undergone recent compression due to cloud–cloud collisions. We examine: (i) the column densities of carbon species across the cycle of C ii, C i, and CO, along with O i, in relation to the H i-to-H2 transition; (ii) the velocity-integrated emission of [C ii] 158 μm, [13C ii] 158 μm, [C i] 609 μm and 370 μm, [O i] 63 μm and 146 μm, and of the first ten 12CO rotational transitions; (iii) the corresponding Spectral Line Energy Distributions; (iv) the usage of [C ii] and [O i] 63 μm to describe the dynamical state of the clouds; (v) the behaviour of the most commonly used ratios between transitions of CO and [C i]; and (vi) the conversion factors for using CO and C i as H2-gas tracers. We find that enhanced cosmic ray energy densities enhance all aforementioned line intensities. At low metallicities, the emission of [C ii] is well connected with the H2 column, making it a promising new H2 tracer in metal-poor environments. The conversion factors of XCO and XC i depend on metallicity and the cosmic ray ionization rate, but not on FUV intensity. In the era of ALMA, SOFIA, and the forthcoming CCAT-prime telescope, our results can be used to understand better the behaviour of systems in a wide range of galactic and extragalactic environments.

Resolving the Dust-to-Metals Ratio and CO-to-H2 Conversion Factor in the Nearby Universe

Abstract We investigate the relationship between the dust-to-metals ratio (D/M) and the local interstellar medium environment at ∼2 kpc resolution in five nearby galaxies: IC 342, M31, M33, M101, and NGC 628. A modified blackbody model with a broken power-law emissivity is used to model the dust emission from 100 to 500 μm observed by Herschel. We utilize the metallicity gradient derived from auroral line measurements in H i regions whenever possible. Both archival and new CO rotational line and H i 21 cm maps are adopted to calculate gas surface density, including new wide-field CO and H i maps for IC 342 from IRAM and the VLA, respectively. We experiment with several prescriptions of the CO-to-H2 conversion factor and compare the resulting D/M–metallicity and D/M–density correlations, both of which are expected to be nonnegative from depletion studies. The D/M is sensitive to the choice of the conversion factor. The conversion factor prescriptions based on metallicity only yield too much molecular gas in the center of IC 342 to obtain the expected correlations. Among the prescriptions tested, the one that yields the expected correlations depends on both metallicity and surface density. The 1σ range of the derived D/M spans 0.40–0.58. Compared to chemical evolution models, our measurements suggest that the dust growth timescale is much shorter than the dust destruction timescale. The measured D/M is consistent with the D/M in galaxy-integrated studies derived from infrared dust emission. Meanwhile, the measured D/M is systematically higher than the D/M derived from absorption, which likely indicates a systematic offset between the two methods.

The Importance of Local Interstellar Conditions on the Galactic Cosmic-Ray Spectrum at Exoplanets

Abstract Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) are highly energetic particles that can have significant effects on the atmospheres and potentially also surfaces of (exo)planets and moons. Their propagation through the Sun’s heliosphere and their interaction with planetary bodies have been widely studied in the solar system (e.g., Earth, Mars, Venus, and Europa). There is currently much interest in exoplanetary science, particularly in terms of characterizing the potential habitability of exoplanetary environments. As a consequence of this, models have been developed to quantify the effect of GCRs on exoplanet systems. However, many such studies assume Earth-like (1 au) GCR fluxes. Here we will demonstrate why this is not a reasonable assumption. We briefly discuss the journey that GCRs make from their birth to the arrival at an exoplanet, and discuss the various implications this will have on GCR fluxes. We demonstrate the importance of understanding the specific local interstellar medium (ISM) that an exoplanetary system resides within, as this determines the size of the astrosphere of the host star. This has strong implications for the modulation of GCR fluxes throughout an astrosphere. We estimate how GCR proton fluxes at 1 au (from the Sun) would be different from current values if the solar system was embedded in a different ISM environment. Furthermore, we provide estimates of the wide range of possible GCR proton fluxes at the exoplanets Kepler-20f and Kepler-88c using previously published estimates for the local ISM parameters at these bodies.

Ultraviolet Photoprocessing of Glycine Adsorbed on Various Space-Relevant Minerals

Mineral surfaces are energetic environments that can assist prebiotic organization by adsorbing selected molecules and allowing their concentration and chemical evolution, possibly toward complex (pre)biological systems. This dynamic rocky environment can also play a crucial role as promoters of chemical reactions towards increasing molecular complexity. Moreover, presence of minerals can mediate the effects of electromagnetic radiation and influence the photostability of biomolecules, catalyzing photoreaction or protecting molecules against degradation. Such interactions are responsible for the preservation/degradation mechanisms of organic molecules in space. In particular, the discovery of organic molecules on asteroids and comets confirms their role as transport and delivery vehicles of building blocks of life on Earth and possibly on other bodies of the Solar System, and the study of this kind of processes can improve our knowledge in astrobiology.Many different prebiotic and bio-molecules were detected in space and in meteorites, but among them amino acid glycine (H2NCH2COOH), is one of the most important. It is the simplest of the 20 biogenic amino acids and it is conceivably the link between complex organic molecules detected in our evolved Solar System and prebiotic molecules observed in the interstellar medium and protostellar environment. Laboratory simulations of UV processing may provide key insights into the survival of glycine and other biomarker in space environment, which is of particular relevance for upcoming space exploration missions on planetary surfaces, like ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars 2020, and sample return missions, like NASA OSIRIS-REx.We report a laboratory study of UV irradiation of glycine adsorbed on various space relevant minerals, i.e. forsterite, antigorite, spinel and pyrite, using a calibrated enhanced UV Xenon lamp, which demonstrated good performance as solar simulator. Comparing protective/catalytic effects of various minerals helps to unravel the role of rocky surfaces in the origin of life and provides hints for the search of organics in present and future robotic space exploration missions.

Dust charge distribution in the interstellar medium

We investigate the equilibrium charge distribution of dust grains in the interstellar medium (ISM). Our treatment accounts for collisional charging by electrons and ions, photoelectric charging due to a background interstellar radiation field, the collection of suprathermal cosmic ray electrons and photoelectric emission due to a cosmic ray induced ultraviolet radiation field within dense molecular clouds. We find that the charge equilibrium assumption is valid throughout the multi-phase ISM conditions investigated here, and should remain valid for simulations with resolutions down to AU scales. The charge distribution of dust grains is size, composition, and ISM environment dependent: local radiation field strength, $G$, temperature, $T$, and electron number density, $n_{\mathrm{e}}$. The charge distribution is tightly correlated with the `charging parameter', $G\sqrt{T}/n_{\mathrm{e}}$. In the molecular medium, both carbonaceous and silicate grains have predominantly negative or neutral charges with narrow distributions. In the cold neutral medium, carbonaceous and silicate grains vary from negative and narrow distributions, to predominantly positive and wide distributions depending on the magnitude of the charging parameter. In the warm neutral medium, grains of all sizes are positively charged with wide distributions. We derive revised parametric expressions that can be used to recover the charge distribution function of carbonaceous and silicate grains from 3.5 {\AA} to 0.25 $\mu$m as a function of the size, composition and ambient ISM parameters. Finally, we find that the parametric equations can be used in environments other than Solar neighborhood conditions, recovering the charge distribution function of dust grains in photon dominated regions.

Measurements of Diffusion of Volatiles in Amorphous Solid Water: Application to Interstellar Medium Environments

Abstract The diffusion of atoms and molecules in ices covering dust grains in dense clouds in interstellar space is an important but poorly characterized step in the formation of complex molecules in space. Here we report the measurement of diffusion of simple molecules in amorphous solid water (ASW), an analog of interstellar ices, which are amorphous and made mostly of water molecules. The new approach that we used relies on measuring, in situ, the change in band strength and position of mid-infrared features of OH dangling bonds as molecules move through pores and channels of ASW. We obtained the Arrhenius pre-exponents and activation energies for diffusion of CO, O2, N2, CH4, and Ar in ASW. The diffusion energy barrier of H2 and D2 were also measured, but only upper limits were obtained. These values constitute the first comprehensive set of diffusion parameters of simple molecules on the pore surface of ASW and can be used in simulations of the chemical evolution of Interstellar Medium environments, thus replacing unsupported estimates. We also present a set of argon temperature programmed desorption experiments to determine the desorption energy distribution of argon on non-porous ASW.

The Large-scale Interstellar Medium of SS 433/W50 Revisited

Abstract With new high-resolution CO and H i data, we revisited the large-scale interstellar medium (ISM) environment toward the SS 433/W50 system. We find that two interesting molecular cloud (MC) concentrations, G39.315−1.155 and G40.331−4.302, are well aligned along the precession cone of SS 433 within a smaller opening angle of ∼±7°. The kinematic features of the two MCs at ∼73–84 km s−1, as well as those of the corresponding atomic-gas counterparts, are consistent with the kinematic characteristics of SS 433. That is, the receding gas from SS 433 jet is probably responsible for the redshifted feature of G39.315−1.155 near the Galactic plane, and the approaching one may power the blueshifted gas of G40.331−4.302 toward the observer. Moreover, the H i emission at V LSR ∼ 70–90 km s−1 displays the morphological resemblance with the radio nebula W50. We suggest that the V LSR = 77 ± 5 km s−1 gas is physically associated with SS 433/W50, leading to a near kinematic distance of 4.9 ± 0.4 kpc for the system. The observed gas features, which are located outside the current radio boundaries of W50, are probably the fossil record of jet–ISM interactions at ∼105 years ago. The energetic jets of the unique microquasar have profound effects on its ISM environment, which may facilitate the formation of molecular gas on the timescale of ≲0.1 Myr for the ram pressure of ∼2 × 106 K cm−3.

Exploring the 13CO/C18O abundance ratio towards Galactic young stellar objects and HII regions

Aims. Determining molecular abundance ratios is important not only for the study of Galactic chemistry, but also because they are useful to estimate physical parameters in a large variety of interstellar medium environments. One of the most important molecules for tracing the molecular gas in the interstellar medium is CO, and the 13CO/C18O abundance ratio is usually used to estimate molecular masses and densities of regions with moderate to high densities. Nowadays isotope ratios are in general indirectly derived from elemental abundances ratios. We present the first 13CO/C18O abundance ratio study performed from CO isotope observations towards a large sample of Galactic sources of different natures at different locations. Methods. To study the 13CO/C18O abundance ratio, we used 12CO J = 3 − 2 data obtained from the CO High-Resolution Survey, 13CO and C18O J = 3 − 2 data from the 13CO/C18O (J = 3 − 2) Heterodyne Inner Milky Way Plane Survey, and some complementary data extracted from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope database. We analyzed a sample of 198 sources composed of young stellar objects (YSOs), and HII and diffuse HII regions as catalogued in the Red MSX Source Survey in 27.°5 ≤ l ≤ 46.°5 and |b|0.°5. Results. Most of the analyzed sources are located in the galactocentric distance range 4.0–6.5 kpc. We found that YSOs have, on average, lower 13CO/C18O abundance ratios than HII and diffuse HII regions. Taking into account that the gas associated with YSOs should be less affected by the radiation than in the case of the others sources, selective far-UV photodissociation of C18O is confirmed. The 13CO/C18O abundance ratios obtained in this work are systematically lower than those predicted from the known elemental abundance relations. These results will be useful in future studies of molecular gas related to YSOs and HII regions based on the observation of these isotopes.

STICKING OF MOLECULES ON NONPOROUS AMORPHOUS WATER ICE

ABSTRACT Accurate modeling of physical and chemical processes in the interstellar medium (ISM) requires detailed knowledge of how atoms and molecules adsorb on dust grains. However, the sticking coefficient, a number between 0 and 1 that measures the first step in the interaction of a particle with a surface, is usually assumed in simulations of ISM environments to be either 0.5 or 1. Here we report on the determination of the sticking coefficient of H2, D2, N2, O2, CO, CH4, and CO2 on nonporous amorphous solid water. The sticking coefficient was measured over a wide range of surface temperatures using a highly collimated molecular beam. We showed that the standard way of measuring the sticking coefficient—the King–Wells method—leads to the underestimation of trapping events in which there is incomplete energy accommodation of the molecule on the surface. Surface scattering experiments with the use of a pulsed molecular beam are used instead to measure the sticking coefficient. Based on the values of the measured sticking coefficient, we suggest a useful general formula of the sticking coefficient as a function of grain temperature and molecule-surface binding energy. We use this formula in a simulation of ISM gas–grain chemistry to find the effect of sticking on the abundance of key molecules both on grains and in the gas phase.

Forming NCO(-) in Dense Molecular Clouds: Possible Gas-Phase Chemical Paths From Quantum Calculations.

The existence of NCO– anions in the interstellar medium (ISM) has been suggested and searched for over the years but without any formal definitive sighting of that molecule. We discuss in this work the possible formation of either NCO– directly or of NCO neutral as a precursor to NCO– formation by electron attachment. We follow simple, gas-phase chemical reactions for which the general features are obtained from accurate quantum calculations. The results are shedding some additional light on the likely presence of this anion in the ISM environment, drawing further information from the specific features of the considered reactions on the additional chemical options that exist for its formation.

PROBING OUR HELIOSPHERIC HISTORY. I. HIGH-RESOLUTION OBSERVATIONS OF Na I AND Ca II ALONG THE SOLAR HISTORICAL TRAJECTORY

Over the course of its motion through the Galaxy, our solar system has encountered many interstellar environments of varying characteristics. Interstellar medium (ISM) density variations spanning seven orders of magnitude are commonly seen throughout the general Galactic environment, and a sufficiently dense cloud within this range has the potential to dramatically alter the structure of the heliosphere. We present observations of the ISM environments the Sun has most recently encountered based on high-resolution optical spectra toward nearby stars in the direction of the historical solar trajectory. The data were obtained with the highest-resolution spectrographs available, including the Tull Spectrograph on the Harlan J. Smith Telescope at McDonald Observatory and the Ultra-High-Resolution Facility on the Anglo-Australian Telescope at the Anglo-Australian Observatory. Observations were made of interstellar Na I and Ca II doublet absorption toward 43 bright stars within about 500 pc. No absorption is seen out to a distance of 120 pc (consistent with the outer boundary of the Local Bubble), but a complex collection of absorbers is seen in stars beyond 120 pc. While common absorbers are consistently seen in most sight lines, significant spatial variation is also detected, even between closely spaced sight lines. This pervasive evidence of small-scale structure not only speaks to the complexity of the morphology or physical properties of the gas in the ISM, but also emphasizes that dramatic structural changes to the heliosphere are common and it is important to understand the implications of such changes, such as the modulation in the cosmic ray flux, on planets.

Ortho-to-Para Ratio in Interstellar Water on the Sightline toward Sagittarius B2(N)

The determination of the water ortho-to-para ratio (OPR) is of great interest for studies of the formation and thermal history of water ices in the interstellar medium and protoplanetary disk environments. We present new Herschel observations of the fundamental rotational transitions of ortho- and para-water on the sightline toward Sagittarius B2(N), which allow improved estimates of the measurement uncertainties due to instrumental effects and assumptions about the excitation of water molecules. These new measurements, suggesting a spin temperature of 24-32 K, confirm the earlier findings of an OPR below the high-temperature value on the nearby sightline toward Sagittarius B2(M). The exact implications of the low OPR in the galactic center molecular gas remain unclear and will greatly benefit from future laboratory measurements involving water freeze-out and evaporation processes under low-temperature conditions, similar to those present in the galactic interstellar medium. Given the specific conditions in the central region of the Milky Way, akin to those encountered in active Galactic nuclei, gas-phase processes under the influence of strong X-ray and cosmic ray ionization also have to be carefully considered. We summarize some of the latest laboratory measurements and their implications here.

Electron attachment rates for PAH anions in the ISM and dark molecular clouds: dependence on their chemical properties

CONTEXT: The attachment of free electrons to polycondensed aromatic ring molecules (PAHs) is studied for the variety of these molecules with different numbers of condensed rings and over a broad range of electron temperatures, using a multichannel quantum scattering approach. The calculations of the relevant cross sections are used in turn to model the corresponding attachment rates for each of the systems under study, and these rates are parametrized as a function of temperature using a commonly employed expression for two-body processes in the interstellar medium (ISM). AIM: The scope of this work is to use first principles to establish the influence of chemical properties on the efficiency of the electron-attachment process for PAHs. METHODS: Quantum multichannel scattering methods are employed to generate the relevant cross sections, hence the attachment rates, using integral elastic cross sections computed over a broad range of relevant energies, from threshold up to 1000 K and linking the attachment to low-energy resonant collisions. RESULTS: The rates obtained for the present molecules are found to markedly vary within the test ensemble of the present work and to be lower than the earlier values used for the entire class of PAHs anions, when modelling their evolutions in ISM environments. The effects of such differences on the evolutions of chemical networks that include both PAH and PAH- species are analysed in some detail and related to previous calculations.
