Systematic reduction of natural enemies and competition across variable precipitation approximates buffelgrass invasiveness (Cenchrus ciliaris) in its native range.

Invasive grasses cause devastating losses to biodiversity and ecosystem function directly and indirectly by altering ecosystem processes. Escape from natural enemies, plant-plant competition, and variable resource availability provide frameworks for understanding invasion. However, we lack a clear understanding of how natural stressors interact in their native range to regulate invasiveness. In this study, we reduced diverse guilds of natural enemies and plant competitors of the highly invasive buffelgrass across a precipitation gradient throughout major climatic shifts in Laikipia, Kenya. To do this, we used a long-term ungulate exclosure experiment design across a precipitation gradient with nested treatments that (1) reduced plant competition through clipping, (2) reduced insects through systemic insecticide, and (3) reduced fungal associates through fungicide application. Additionally, we measured the interaction of ungulates on two stem-boring insect species feeding on buffelgrass. Finally, we measured a multiyear smut fungus outbreak. Our findings suggest that buffelgrass exhibits invasive qualities when released from a diverse group of natural stressors in its native range. We show natural enemies interact with precipitation to alter buffelgrass productivity patterns. In addition, interspecific plant competition decreased the basal area of buffelgrass, suggesting that biotic resistance mediates buffelgrass dominance in the home range. Surprisingly, systemic insecticides and fungicides did not impact buffelgrass production or reproduction, perhaps because other guilds filled the niche space in these highly diverse systems. For example, in the absence of ungulates, we showed an increase in host-specific stem-galling insects, where these insects compensated for reduced ungulate use. Finally, we documented a smut outbreak in 2020 and 2021, corresponding to highly variable precipitation patterns caused by a shifting Indian Ocean Dipole. In conclusion, we observed how reducing natural enemies and competitors and certain interactions increased properties related to buffelgrass invasiveness.

Invasive earthworms modulate native plant trait expression and competition

Biological invasions have major impacts on a variety of ecosystems and threaten native biodiversity. Earthworms have been absent from northern parts of North America since the last ice age, but non‐native earthworms were recently introduced there and are now being spread by human activities. While past work has shown that plant communities in earthworm‐invaded areas change towards a lower diversity mainly dominated by grasses, the underlying mechanisms related to changes in the biotic interactions of the plants are not well understood. Here, we used a trait‐based approach to study the effect of earthworms on interspecific plant competition and aboveground herbivory. We conducted a microcosm experiment in a growth chamber with a full‐factorial design using three plant species native to northern North American deciduous forests, Poa palustris (grass), Symphyotrichum laeve (herb) and Vicia americana (legume), either growing in monoculture or in a mixture of three. These plant community treatments were crossed with earthworm (presence or absence) and herbivore (presence or absence) treatments. Eight out of the fourteen above‐ and belowground plant functional traits studied were significantly affected by earthworms, either by a general effect or in interaction with plant species identity, plant diversity level and/or herbivore presence. Earthworms increased the aboveground productivity and the number of inflorescences of the grass P. palustris. Further, earthworms and herbivores together affected root tissue density of P. palustris and the specific leaf area of V. americana. In this study, earthworm presence gave a competitive advantage to the grass species P. palustris by inducing changes in plant functional traits. Our results suggest that invasive earthworms can alter competitive and multitrophic interactions of plants, shedding light on some of the mechanisms behind invasive earthworm‐induced plant community changes in northern North America forests.

Phenolic acid-induced phase separation and translation inhibition mediate plant interspecific competition.

Phenolic acids (PAs) secreted by donor plants suppress the growth of their susceptible plant neighbours. However, how structurally diverse ensembles of PAs are perceived by plants to mediate interspecific competition remains a mystery. Here we show that a plant stress granule (SG) marker, RNA-BINDING PROTEIN 47B (RBP47B), is a sensor of PAs in Arabidopsis. PAs, including salicylic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, protocatechuic acid and so on, directly bind RBP47B, promote its phase separation and trigger SG formation accompanied by global translation inhibition. Salicylic acid-induced global translation inhibition depends on RBP47 family members. RBP47s regulate the proteome rather than the absolute quantity of SG. The rbp47 quadruple mutant shows a reduced sensitivity to the inhibitory effect of the PA mixture as well as to that of PA-rich rice when tested in a co-culturing ecosystem. In this Article, we identified the long sought-after PA sensor as RBP47B and illustrated that PA-induced SG-mediated translational inhibition was one of the PA perception mechanisms.

Positive responses of soil nutrients and enzyme activities to AM fungus under interspecific and intraspecific competitions when associated with litter addition

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi mediated-litter decomposition is essential for soil carbon and nutrient cycling. Plant competition profoundly influences soil C, nutrients, glomalin-related soil protein, and enzymes. However, it is unclear how a combined AM fungus and litter addition affects soil properties under interspecific and intraspecific competitions. With 170-day-old Broussonetia papyrifera and Carpinus pubescens seedlings, three treatments of intraspecific or interspecific plant competition, AMF Claroideoglomus etunicatum inoculation or not, and leaf litter addition to soil substrate or not were examined to address differences in plant biomass production, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen and total phosphorus, EE-GRSP, DE-GRSP and T-GRSP, and activity of alkaline phosphatase, catalase and urease. The results were as follows: Root, shoot and total biomass increased in B. papyrifera but decreased in C. pubescens under AM mycorrhization in both intraspecific and interspecific competitions. Under mycorrhization, intraspecific, not interspecific, competition increased SOC and ratios of C/N, C/P, DE-GRSP and T-GRSP. Mycorrhization plus litter addition increased SOC, ratios of C/N, C/P and N/P, EE-GRSP, DE-GRSP, T-GRSP, and alkaline phosphatase activity under intraspecific competition, while soil TN, TP, and catalase and urease activities. Soil C, N, P, EE-GRSP or T-GRSP positively associated with catalase, urease or alkaline phosphatase activities. These results showed that alterations in intra- and interspecific competition induced by AM fungus positively respond to soil C, nutrient, GRSP, and enzyme activities, thus plant competition is a key factor in regulating soil properties. Overall, we suggest that interspecific competition enables AMF to increase soil N and P accumulations and related enzyme activities, while intraspecific competition confers more significant benefits than interspecific competition in improving soil C and GRSP accumulations under a combined AMF and litter addition. The findings highlight the importance of plant competition in improving soil function through AM fungus, which is conducive to understand the mechanisms of plant restoration and nutrient cycling in degraded ecosystems.

Whole-soil warming shifts species composition without affecting diversity, biomass and productivity of the plant community in an alpine meadow.

The structure and function of plant communities in alpine meadow ecosystems are potentially susceptible to climate warming. Here, we utilized a unique field manipulation experiment in an alpine meadow on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and investigated the responses of plant species diversity, composition, biomass, and net primary productivity (NPP) at both community and functional group levels to whole-soil-profile warming (3-4 °C across 0-100cm) during 2018-2021. Plant species diversity, biomass and NPP (both above- and belowground) at the community level showed remarkable resistance to warming. However, plant community composition gradually shifted over time. Over the whole experimental warming period, aboveground biomass of legumes significantly decreased by 45%. Conversely, warming significantly stimulated aboveground biomass of forbs by 84%, likely because of better growth and competitive advantages from the warming-induced stimulation of soil water and other variables. However, warming showed minor effects on aboveground biomass of grasses and sedges. Overall, we emphasize that experimental warming may significantly affect plant community composition in a short term by triggering adjustments in plant interspecific competition or survival strategies, which may cause potential changes in plant productivity over a more extended period and lead to changes in carbon source-sink dynamics in the alpine meadow ecosystem.

A case for associational resistance: Apparent support for the stress gradient hypothesis varies with study system.

According to the stress gradient hypothesis (SGH), ecological interactions between organisms shift positively as environmental stress increases. In the case of associational resistance, habitat is modified to ameliorate stress, benefitting other organisms. The SGH is contentious due to conflicting evidence and theoretical perspectives, so we adopted a meta-analytic approach to determine if it is widely supported across a variety of contexts, including different kingdoms, ecosystems, habitats, interactions, stressors, and life history stages. We developed an extensive list of Boolean search criteria to search the published ecological literature and successfully detect studies that both directly tested the hypothesis, and those that were relevant but never mentioned it. We found that the SGH is well supported by studies that feature bacteria, plants, terrestrial ecosystems, interspecific negative interactions, adults, survival instead of growth or reproduction, and drought, fire, and nutrient stress. We conclude that the SGH is indeed a broadly relevant ecological hypothesis that is currently held back by cross-disciplinary communication barriers. More SGH research is needed beyond the scope of interspecific plant competition, and more SGH research should feature multifactor stress. There remains a need to account for positive interactions in scientific pursuits, such as associational resistance in tests of the SGH.

Interspecific interactions affect N and P uptake rather than N:P ratios of plant species: evidence from intercropping

AbstractQuantifying stoichiometry of crop N and P acquisition (i.e. removal from farmland) under different agronomic practices is essential for understanding nutrient budgets and optimizing N and P fertilizer application in agroecosystems. It is not clear how plant N and P uptake and N:P stoichiometry vary between monoculture and intercropping throughout an entire growing season under different N fertilization and mulching practices. Here, we addressed how plant interspecific competition for nutrients have affected the temporal dynamics of crop N and P uptake (and N:P ratios) in five cropping systems (wheat, maize and barley monocultures, and wheat/maize and barley/maize intercropping), under two N levels (0 and 225 kg N ha−1) and two maize mulching treatments (with and without). Wheat and barley had greater N and P competitive ability than maize, leading to an increase in N and P uptake of wheat and barley and a decrease in N and P uptake of maize during co-growth stages in intercropping. N:P ratios of three crop species decreased with plant growth. Crop-level N:P ratios were either not affected by intercropping or did not change consistently with N fertilization while film mulching decreased maize N:P ratios. Community-level N:P ratios of the two intercrops were different from those of the corresponding monoculture at maturity. Because (i) the proportion of N and P removal from intercropping differs from monocultures, and (ii) N and P uptake by crops is decoupled under N fertilization and mulching, these findings may have practical implications for the nutrient budget of intercropping systems.

Effects of Intra- and Interspecific Plant Density on Rhizosphere Bacterial Communities.

There have been very few studies on the effects of plant competition on the rhizosphere bacterial community. To investigate the impacts of intra- and interspecific plant competition, we analyzed the responses of rhizosphere bacterial communities to plant density as determined by 16S rRNA gene targeted sequencing. We included five weedy plant species growing in field soil in monocultures and mixed cultures at three densities in a greenhouse experiment. The rhizosphere bacterial community of each species changed more with density in a mixture of all five plant species than in monocultures, so intra- and interspecific plant competition had different effects on the bacterial community. For the dominant plant competitor, Centaurea cyanus, neither intra- nor interspecific competition had major effects on the composition of its rhizosphere bacterial communities. In contrast, the bacterial communities of the weakest competitor, Trifolium repens, were affected differently by intra- and interspecific competition. During increasing intraspecific competition T. repens maintained a highly specialized bacterial community dominated by Rhizobium; while during interspecific competition, the relative abundance of Rhizobium declined while other nitrogen fixing and potentially plant growth promoting taxa became more abundant. Contrary to previous observations made for soil microbial communities, the bacterial rhizosphere community of the weakest competitor did not become more similar to that of the dominant species. Thus, the process of competition, as well as the plant species themselves, determined the rhizosphere bacterial community. Our results emphasize the role of plant-plant interactions for rhizosphere bacterial communities. These effects may feedback to affect plant-plant interactions, and this is an important hypothesis for future research.

Interspecific plant competition increases soil labile organic carbon and nitrogen contents

Plant competition can impose species-specific effects on the dynamics of soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) through rhizosphere processes and litter input. Therefore, it is crucial to quantify these effects in various terrestrial ecosystems for a better understanding of the mechanisms. Here, we collected subsoils containing low N from a subtropical forest and planted eight dominant tree species (two deciduous and six evergreens) in these soils in a greenhouse to explore the effects of interspecific plant competition on plant growth, soil C and N contents, and soil C and N mineralization rates after the plants had grown for 12 months. Soil labile organic C and N contents were represented by soil extractable organic C (EOC) and extractable organic N (EON) contents. We assessed the magnitude of the interspecific plant competition via the relative interaction intensity (RII) index, which was calculated from the biomass of seedlings in the mixed treatments compared with the single treatments. Our results showed that interspecific plant competition had species-specific effects on plant biomass and soil total C and N contents as well as soil C mineralization rates, whereas it tended to decrease soil N mineralization rates. However, interspecific plant competition significantly decreased plant C and N contents, and significantly increased soil EOC and EON contents with increasing RII. After classifying the communities into two functional types (i.e., deciduous–evergreen versus evergreen–evergreen), similar relationships were observed. These findings address the importance of quantifying interspecific plant competition on soil labile organic C and N contents, which is helpful for understanding soil C and N cycling in forest ecosystems.

Influences of plant interspecific competition and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on nitrogen form preference of an invasive plant

Invasive plant species are often able to alter soils in a way that benefits their own fitness over that of native species. While interspecific competitions may drive species to acquire different forms of nitrogen (N) to avoid intensive competition, plant-mycorrhizal interactions can also influence plant nutrient acquisition. Yet, it is unclear whether a variation in N acquisition by an invasive species is driven by interspecific resource partitioning due to competition with native species or by its symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. We conducted a pot experiment to examine the effects of competition and fungicide on the uptake of different N forms by Flaveria bidentis, an invasive plant having symbiotic relationships with AM fungi, and two coexisting native species, mycotrophic Bidens maximowicziana and non-mycotrophic Amaranthus retroflexus (referred to by genus hereafter), by growing them either in two-species mixtures or in monocultures. We found that the growth of Flaveria was suppressed by its association with AM fungi regardless of the presence of competing native species, but the degree of suppression was related to the native species with which Flaveria competed. When growing in monocultures, all three species showed a strong preference for NO3−-N over NH4+-N and glycine-N regardless of mycorrhizal status. However, under competition conditions, Flaveria increased 15N recovery in any form of N available (in particular NH4+-15N), depending on neighboring plant identity and AM fungi association, whereas Amaranthus specially tended to decrease NH4+-15N uptake when competing with Flaveria, suggesting a niche complementarity in the utilization of N between two species. Our findings suggested that AM fungi may have the potential to limit the invasion of Flaveria, in the short term, and that interspecific competition plays an important role in partitioning soil N acquisition between plant species.

Plant coexistence mediated by adaptive foraging preferences of exploiters or mutualists

Coexistence of plants depends on their competition for common resources and indirect interactions mediated by shared exploiters or mutualists. These interactions are driven either by changes in animal abundance (density-mediated interactions, e.g., apparent competition), or by changes in animal preferences for plants (behaviorally-mediated interactions). This article studies effects of behaviorally-mediated interactions on two plant population dynamics and animal preference dynamics when animal densities are fixed. Animals can be either adaptive exploiters or adaptive mutualists (e.g., herbivores or pollinators) that maximize their fitness. Analysis of the model shows that adaptive animal preferences for plants can lead to multiple outcomes of plant coexistence with different levels of specialization or generalism for the mediator animal species. In particular, exploiter generalism promotes plant coexistence even when inter-specific competition is too strong to make plant coexistence possible without exploiters, and mutualist specialization promotes plant coexistence at alternative stable states when plant inter-specific competition is weak. Introducing a new concept of generalized isoclines allows us to fully analyze the model with respect to the strength of competitive interactions between plants (weak or strong), and the type of interaction between plants and animals (exploitation or mutualism).

Interspecific plant competition mediates the metabolic and ecological signature of a plant–herbivore interaction under warming and elevated CO2

Abstract Biotic interactions shape community evolution, but we lack mechanistic insights on how metabolic and ecological processes under climate change are altered by biotic interactions. We used a two‐trophic model community consisting of the aphid Dysaphis plantaginea feeding on the forb Plantago lanceolata, and a grass competitor Lolium perenne that does not experience herbivory by the aphid. Monocultures and mixtures were exposed to the herbivory treatment and to three relevant simulated environmental changes as prevalent under current climate change (increased temperature, CO2, and increased temperature and CO2) Elevated CO2 reduced the nitrogen content of P. lanceolata, while simultaneous increases of CO2 and temperature modified the plant metabolic component and the magnitude of these responses in different directions. Elevated CO2 enhanced defence systems in P. lanceolata, but these effects were not altered by warming. Interspecific plant competition did, however, neutralize these responses. There were no indirect effects of climate change on aphid population growth despite changes in plant defence, nutritional quality and biomass induced by our environmental change scenarios. We thus demonstrate interactions between abiotic and biotic processes on plant metabolite profiles, but more importantly, that climate change effects on a selection of the metabolic pathways are altered by herbivory and competition. Our experiment under semi‐natural conditions thus demonstrates the non‐additive and often neutralizing effects of biotic interactions on plant metabolism and species performance under climate‐associated environmental change. Elevated temperature differently affects growth, photosynthetic capacity, nutrient absorption and leaf ultrastructure of Abies faxoniana and Picea purpurea under intra- and interspecific competition.

There is a limited understanding of the impacts of global warming on intra- and interspecific plant competition. Resolving this knowledge gap is important for predicting the potential influence of global warming on forests, particularly on high-altitude trees, which are more sensitive to warming. In the present study, effects of intra- and interspecific competition on plant growth and associated physiological, structural and chemical traits were investigated in Abies faxoniana and Picea purpurea seedlings under control (ambient temperature) and elevated temperature (ET, 2°C above ambient temperature) conditions for 2years. We found that A. faxoniana and P. purpurea grown under intra- and interspecific competition showed significant differences in dry matter accumulation (DMA), photosynthetic capacity, nutrient absorption, non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) contents and leaf ultrastructure under ET conditions. ET increased leaf, stem and root DMA of both conifers under both competition patterns. Moreover, under ET and interspecific competition, P. purpurea had overall superior competitive capacity characterized by higher organ (leaf, stem and root) and total DMA, height growth rate, net photosynthetic rate, specific leaf area, water use efficiency (δ13C), leaf and root N and NSC concentrations and greater plasticity for absorption of different soil N forms. Thus, the growth of P. purpurea benefitted from the presence of A. faxoniana under ET. Our results demonstrated that ET significantly affects the asymmetric competition patterns in subalpine conifer species. Potential alteration of plant competitive interactions by global warming can influence the composition, structure and functioning of subalpine coniferous forests.

Effects of interspecific competition on plant-soil feedbacks generated by long-term grazing

Grazing by large herbivores leads to changes in soil properties which can in turn modify plant performance. However, little is known about how competition among plant species alters the strength and direction of grazing-induced plant-soil feedbacks (PSFs). In a previous monoculture experiment, we found that the intensity of sheep grazing generated consistent abiotic feedback effects and species-specific biotic feedback effects. To test if and how interspecific plant competition modifies the PSFs observed in our previous monoculture experiment, five naturally-occurring plant species (Artemisia capillaris, Dodartia orientalis, Lespedeza davurica, Oxytropis racemosa, and Stipa bungeana) were grown in mixed communities in sterilized and unsterilized soils from plots of four grazing intensities (0, 2.7, 5.3, and 8.7 sheep/ha). Further, the five plant species were grown in mixtures in treatment-specific soil following inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AM) and/or a mixture of pathogenic Fusarium species (FU), to test the contribution of these two fungal groups to biotic PSFs. All plant species experienced net neutral to positive abiotic and biotic PSFs. Compared with our previous monoculture experiment, we found that the presence of interspecific competition did not change the abiotic PSF effects generated with increasing grazing intensity, but shifted the direction and strength of the biotic PSFs generated within each grazing intensity. The presence of pathogenic Fusarium-only significantly decreased the proportional biomass of the dominant species A. capillaris and S. bungeana, and the presence of AM fungi-only significantly increased the proportional biomass of the subordinate species D. orientalis and O. racemosa. Our study strongly suggests that in grazed ecosystems interspecific competition and biotic PSFs interact to drive plant community dynamics, and also that soil mutualists such as AM fungi have the potential to promote plant species coexistence by facilitating the performance of subordinate species.

Abstract Interactions with symbiotic microbes, such as mycorrhizal fungi, have the potential to greatly influence plant growth, but it is unclear whether field variation in symbiont availability is common and, if so, sufficient to influence interspecific plant competition. In a greenhouse experiment using natural field soils, I varied the timing of ectomycorrhizal inoculation and the presence of an arbuscular mycorrhizal plant competitor, and measured their effects on pine seedling growth. I found that ectomycorrhizal colonization was absent in some field soils, and that in soils without mycorrhizal inoculum, delayed arrival of ectomycorrhizal spores progressively reduced pine seedling growth and favoured growth of the competitor. Competition had significant negative effects on pine seedling growth, but the competition effect was much smaller than the effect of delayed mutualist arrival. Synthesis. The importance of mycorrhizal spore arrival time on pine growth suggests that plants may experience mutualist limitation more frequently than previously expected, and the relative magnitude of seedling responses to mycorrhizal fungi and competing plants show that in some systems mutualism is likely of equal or greater importance compared with interspecific competition in affecting plant community assembly.

Plant-plant competition outcomes are modulated by plant effects on the soil bacterial community

Competition is a key process that determines plant community structure and dynamics, often mediated by nutrients and water availability. However, the role of soil microorganisms on plant competition, and the links between above- and belowground processes, are not well understood. Here we show that the effects of interspecific plant competition on plant performance are mediated by feedbacks between plants and soil bacterial communities. Each plant species selects a singular community of soil microorganisms in its rhizosphere with a specific species composition, abundance and activity. When two plant species interact, the resulting soil bacterial community matches that of the most competitive plant species, suggesting strong competitive interactions between soil bacterial communities as well. We propose a novel mechanism by which changes in belowground bacterial communities promoted by the most competitive plant species influence plant performance and competition outcome. These findings emphasise the strong links between plant and soil communities, paving the way to a better understanding of plant community dynamics and the effects of soil bacterial communities on ecosystem functioning and services.

Rhizosphere hydrophobicity: A positive trait in the competition for water.

The ability to acquire water from the soil is a major driver in interspecific plant competition and it depends on several root functional traits. One of these traits is the excretion of gel-like compounds (mucilage) that modify physical soil properties. Mucilage secreted by roots becomes hydrophobic upon drying, impedes the rewetting of the soil close to the root, the so called rhizosphere, and reduces water availability to plants. The function of rhizosphere hydrophobicity is not easily understandable when looking at a single plant, but it may constitute a competitive advantage at the ecosystem level. We hypothesize that by making the top soil hydrophobic, deep-rooted plants avoid competititon with shallow-rooted plants. To test this hypothesis we used an individual-based model to simulate water uptake and growth of two virtual plant species, one deep-rooted plant capable of making the soil hydrophobic and a shallow-rooted plant. We ran scenarios with different precipitation regimes ranging from dry to wet (350, 700, and 1400 mm total annual precipitation) and from high to low precipitation frequencies (1, 7, and 14 days). Plant species abundance and biomass were chosen as indicators for competitiveness of plant species. At constant precipitation frequency mucilage hydrophobicity lead to a benefit in biomass and abundance of the tap-rooted population. Under wet conditions this effect diminished and tap-rooted plants were less productive. Without this trait both species coexisted. The effect of root exudation trait remained constant under different precipitation frequencies. This study shows that mucilage secretion is a competitive trait for the acquisition of water. This advantage is achieved by the modification of the soil hydraulic properties and specifically by inducing water repellency in soil regions which are shared with other species.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus identity and diversity influence subtropical tree competition

Abstract Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi can influence plant nutrient uptake and, therefore, may alter interspecific plant competition. However, the role of AM fungi in subtropical tree competition is poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of AM fungus identity (four species) and diversity (a mixture of the same four species) on the competitive relationships between seedlings of a pioneer tree Rhus chinensis and a late-pioneer tree Celtis sinensis , and between R. chinensis and a mid-successional tree Cinnamomum camphora . In seedlings, AM fungi significantly promoted a competitive advantage of R. chinensis over both Ce. sinensis and Ci. camphora .
