Value creation in a learning community: an interprofessional partnership between nursing home care, education and students.

To assess the value created in a learning community- comprised of different professionals and nursing students- at a nursing home. A case study approach was used. Data were collected between 2019 and 2021 through self-reports, observations and stories (interviews, diaries). The template analysis revealed nine transcending themes, six associated with preexisting value-creation cycles (expected, immediate, potential, applied, realized and transformative value) and three other relevant themes: contextual, factors and value-creation initiators. A nursing home learning community comprised of diverse professionals in partnership with nursing students shows a variety of value creation and seems to potentially leverage interprofessional and lifelong learning activities, on top of formal nursing education. It is recommended to integrate the value-creation cycles into the processes of learning communities to promote collective decision-making. Research on both the final level of students involved and having residents participate in the learning community would be worthwhile.

Educational strategies to implement domains 2, 6 and 10 of the 2021 AACN core competencies

This article features strategies to instruct the competencies in Domains 2, 6 and 10, i.e., respectively, Person-Centered Care, Interprofessional Partnership, and Personal, Professional, and Leadership Development, of American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) 2021 core competencies for entry- and advanced-level psychiatric mental health nursing courses. These three Domains feature scientific knowledge, effective communication skills and collaboration with patients and other healthcare professionals in diverse clinical situations, and lifelong learning and leadership, which are essential in nursing practice. The creative examples for AACN Domains 2, 6 and 10 offered in this article can help faculty to more effectively prepare both entry- and advanced-level nursing students for evolving clinical practices.

Patient outcomes through interprofessional partnerships

This in-depth conversation explores the dynamics of collaboration between pharmacists and nurses, with a special emphasis on pharmaceutical care (PhC). The investigation commences by clarifying the notion of PhC, emphasizing its professional, patient-focused, and inter-professional aspects. The story takes place in the framework of the Polish healthcare system and highlights the critical role that pharmacists play—a position that was further highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. But obstacles that have been found—from doubt to organizational difficulties—showroom deficiencies in the cooperative decision-making process between pharmacists and nurses, calling for a paradigm change. Extending the reach internationally, the discussion is consistent with the World Health Organization's recognition of nursing's comprehensive care, both independent and cooperative. Research demonstrates how collaborative efforts, such interprofessional medication reviews, can improve patient outcomes, lower errors, and raise the standard of care overall. Aspects of education highlight the deficiencies in nursing programs and stress the significance of identifying and maximizing nurses' contributions to pharmaceutical care in order to enhance patient safety and healthcare quality. The discussion ends by emphasizing how important it is to break down barriers via innovative professional viewpoints, educational changes, and legislative modifications.

Using Partnerships and Multiple Data Sources to Surveil Agricultural Injuries: Considerations and Recommendations

ABSTRACT This article describes an interprofessional collaboration between Sanford Health and North Dakota State University that strengthens agricultural injury surveillance in the upper Midwest by using multiple sources of health data and geographic information systems (GIS) technology. We provide methodological insights and considerations for using and combining facility-level trauma registry (FLTR) data, national data sets, and GIS to identify areas with disproportionate agricultural injury prevalence. Additionally, we discuss the benefits of FLTR data, how and why it is collected, the data it contains, and how it can be combined with national datasets to fill-in surveillance gaps. Lastly, we offer recommendations for building cross-institutional and interprofessional partnerships.

Development of a Needs Assessment for Low-income Seniors in Cleveland Ohio: A student-driven Interprofessional Approach.

Older persons with low socioeconomic status in the United States have different and unique health needs compared to younger persons. As part of a student-led, interprofessional partnership, we performed a needs assessment of community dwelling older persons with low socioeconomic status in an urban location within Ohio, USA. Three entities participated in the needs assessment: a student-run health clinic, a Federally Qualified Health Center, and an apartment complex of the study population. Health professional students from medical, dental, nursing, social work, nutrition, and physician assistant programs led the needs assessment process. The process consisted of multiple phases, which included preliminary literature review, survey development, data collection, and analysis. The final survey was multidisciplinary, with six content areas covered in 37 items. One hundred nineteen survey responses were received, and multiple areas of need were identified including food insecurity, dental care access, and mental health. 93% of participants had at least one unmet health need and 39% of respondents met our classification for high need. The needs of the local study population had key differences from previously published data in more generalized populations of older community-dwelling individuals in the United States, notably lower utilization of dental care (43% vs. 66%), increased prevalence of possible food insecurity (30% vs. 17%), and increased use of age-appropriate preventive cancer screening services. Multiple areas of need were successfully identified through a student-led interprofessional needs assessment. Future student teams can address the identified needs, again through interprofessional collaborations. This process may have unique benefits to help build robust community-academic partnerships, while fostering interprofessional collaborative opportunities among healthcare students.

Transition from child to adult services for young people with cerebral palsy in Ireland: Influencing factors at multiple ecological levels.

To explore the factors that influence the process of transitioning from child to adult services in Ireland among young people with cerebral palsy, their parents, and service providers. This study followed a qualitative descriptive approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 54 participants, including young people with cerebral palsy aged 16 to 22 years (n = 13), their parents (n = 14), and service providers (n = 27). Data were analysed using the Framework Method. Findings were categorized using an ecological model across four levels: individual, microsystem, mesosystem, and exosystem. Limited awareness, preparation, and access to information hindered successful transition. Microsystem factors such as family knowledge, readiness, resilience, and health professional expertise influenced transition experience. Mesosystem factors encompassed provider-family interaction, interprofessional partnerships, and interagency collaboration between child and adult services. Exosystem factors included inadequate availability and distribution of adult services, limited referral options, coordination challenges, absence of transition policies, staffing issues, and funding allocation challenges. Transition is influenced by diverse factors at multiple ecological levels, including interactions within families, between health professionals, and larger systemic factors. Given the complexity of transition, a comprehensive multi-level response is required, taking into account the interactions among individuals, services, and systems.

Conflict Management in Service Settings Nursing in A Hospital: Literature Review

Backgorund: The majority of healthcare professionals who offer services in hospitalsare nurses. However, nurses frequently neglect interprofessional partnerships and teamwork in favor of concentrating solely on their individual jobs. This may lead to conflict inside a healthcare organization, which may have an impact on the efficiencywith which nurses provide nursing care. Purpose: The purpose of this literature review is to identify factors that have the potential to cause conflict, the parties involved in conflict management, conflict management strategies or solutions in the nursing workplace, and variables that influence the success of conflict resolution. Methods: A literature review was used as a method in this research. The scientific databases used are Google Scholar, Sage Journals, PubMed, Elsevier, Wiley, BookedCentral,andPortal Garuda. The search results yielded 92 articles.After selection,there were 11 international journal articles and 14 national journal articles. The selection process uses an abstract checklist and a PRISMA checklist. Result: The results of the review show that the factors that cause conflict in health services include work stress, low work satisfaction and motivation, miscoordination a lack of empathy in interdisciplinary collaboration and toxic leadership. The parties involved in conflict resolution are the head of the room, nurse manager, nurses and doctors. Conflict resolution can be carried out with compromising, integrating,cooperative, assertive and obliging strategies which are supported by interdisciplinary communication, management skills, emotional intelligence and the involvement of clinical educators. Conclusion:The aspects that most often cause conflict are work stress and problems with work coordination and interdisciplinary collaboration. The parties most often involved are the head of the room and the nurse manager. Conflict management can be done using an integrating style, where the integrating style is also the most dominant style of conflict management strategy. REVISITING THE TEACHING NURSING HOME: QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF NURSING STUDENTS’ CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

Abstract Revisiting the Teaching Nursing Home is a two-year pilot project to address the long-term care workforce shortage by introducing nursing students to geriatric nursing while also improving quality of care within nursing homes. The initiative has multiple components: enhanced clinical rotations for nursing students with partner schools of nursing, implementation of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Age-Friendly Health System “4M” quality improvement model, and an online learning network. Undergraduate and graduate nursing students at three Schools of Nursing participated in clinical experiences at regional nursing homes. Students completed an “activity feedback” form after each clinical rotation at the nursing home or related activity, such as a session about the 4Ms or quality improvement/assessment. The activity feedback form asked students to share their most important takeaway and suggestions for improvement. Data from 340 feedback forms was coded qualitatively using conventional and directed content analysis using the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials for Professional Nursing Education. Multiple coders and audit trials were used to establish rigor. Students’ takeaways encompassed 7 of 8 key concepts in the AACN Essentials; Knowledge for Nursing Practice, Person-Centered Care, and Interprofessional Partnerships were most frequently mentioned. Students provided numerous suggestions for improving their clinical experiences including facilitated learning from instructors and supported engagement with nursing home staff. In conclusion, the program addressed many of the core competencies designated by AACN. One recommendation that flows from these findings is to enhance the role of clinical preceptors in the nursing home setting to facilitate mentored training.

Promoting early language development in the Arab world and Sustainable Development Goals 3, 4, 10 and 17

Purpose This commentary describes a multi-national project which addresses gaps in the design and delivery of health and education services in Arabic-speaking countries in relation to early language development, with a focus on Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories. This includes: (1) co-production with early years professionals and NGOs of approaches to support early language development; (2) development and standardisation of tools to identify monolingual and multilingual Arabic-speaking children at risk of poor language development; and (3) examination of language development in refugee communities. Result The importance of inter-professional partnership and the inclusion of families in planning support for oral language development is highlighted. Arabic versions of the Communicative Development Inventory (CDI) Toddler were developed, and data collected from 1074 Egyptian, Jordanian and Palestinian monolingual infants aged 8–30 months. Data from 201 age-matched Palestinian infants in Lebanese refugee camps highlight inequalities resulting from limited maternal educational opportunities. Data from 230 multilingual Lebanese 2-year-olds enable the interpretation of CDI scores as a function of language exposure. Conclusion This work contributes to the promotion of robust language development for all Arabic-speaking children. This commentary focusses on sustainable development goal (SDG) 3, SDG 4, SDG 10 and SDG 17.

Healthy Work Environments: An Interprofessional Partnership Model to Promote Positive Workplace Culture

Background: Healthy work environments (HWEs) are a primary focus of leaders in health care. Many nurse- specific HWE initiatives exist to improve workplace culture; however, workplace harm persists. An interprofessional partnership model is needed to sustain healthy workplace cultures to promote engagement among providers and employees, and safe, high-quality patient care. Methods: The 5-Stage Process® is a method for teams to openly examine workplace behavior, co-creating their future using continuous quality improvement strategies of Team Building, Assessment, Implementation, Evaluation, and Sustainability. To ensure success, each stage should be completed with focused attention to the concrete strategies the team needs to take to sustain the healthy work environment. Results: The entire 5-Stage Process® was used by interprofessional teams from the specialties of Perinatology and Radiology at major health care institutions in the Midwest and Perioperative in the Northeast United States. Each team implemented one-on-one conflict resolution techniques, and one team noted improvements in employee engagement scores from 60% to 86%, patient satisfaction from 74% to 85%, safety perception scores from 70% to 79%, and teamwork perception scores from 82% to 84%. Conclusion: The interprofessional partnership 5-Stage Process® may be a successful method to continuously improve workplace cultures and ultimately improve patient safety and provider and staff satisfaction. Sustaining healthy work environments requires leaders’ constant focus and dedication to partnership techniques to ensure that new healthy behaviors persist.

9.N. Workshop: It Takes Two To Improve European Child Health (Care)

Abstract Many societal developments have an impact on health care in general and on child health care, in particular. Internationally challenges include an aging population, more cultural diversity and a rising prevalence of chronic diseases among children and adolescents, revealing potential risks for child health care. A strong focus must be placed on prevention strategies that are effective, sustainable and equitable. Planning and implementing prevention strategies may require shifts in the organization of care, such as the forging and strengthening of interdisciplinary and intersectoral partnerships within a country. A promising example of such partnerships is the collaboration of public health with paediatrics. Both professional groups acknowledge the call for greater integration since prevention strategies can only be achieved and sustained by working together. The objectives of this workshop are to: • Provide a selective overview of three partnerships and plans for cooperation between public health and paediatrics. • To exchange experiences and possibilities with the audience to pave the way for further successful partnerships. In this workshop, we outline the partnership and plans for cooperation between public health and paediatrics in three European countries: Netherlands, Finland and Switzerland. In the first presentation, Danielle Jansen and Károly Illy will share the new vision towards the year 2030 of the Dutch Paediatric Society in which building blocks are presented to guarantee accessible, high-quality, timely and effective care for every child. One of the building blocks to be highlighted is the interprofessional collaboration between paediatricians and public health professionals. In the second presentation, Julia Dratva and Susanne Stronski from Switzerland will present a shared paediatric and public health vision of a digital child health booklet. The digital booklet will empower parents and adolescents, provide access to personal health irrespective of place or time, improve sharing health information among care professionals, thus ensuring continuity of care and limiting redundancy of investigations and in addition, and provide data for public health research and monitoring. Challenges and solutions will be shared with the audience. In the third presentation, Silja Kosola from Finland will present a Finnish vision for school health care where professionals trained in public health and medicine collaborate with each other as well as with teachers for the benefit of children and adolescents. This multidisciplinary collaboration across governing bodies is especially important as Finland undergoes a national reform of social and health care services. After the three presentations, we engage the audience by asking for their experiences and sharing the examples of collaborations between public health and paediatrics, as well as barriers and facilitators. At the end of the workshop, we would like to summarize the results of the workshop in an overview of preliminary best practices. Key messages • Global climatic, societal and politic developments reveal potential risks for child health cand health care, which must be countered effectively, sustainably and equitably. • Greater integration of prevention across sectors is elemental and can be achieved through interprofessional partnerships.

Integration of medication for opioid use disorder training into graduate nursing education.

The COVID-19 pandemic has further limited access to treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). Advanced practice registered nurses can reduce opioid related complications and overdose by obtaining a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regulated X-waiver that allows for prescription of medications for OUD (MOUD) in general medical settings. Graduate nursing education, where advanced practice nurse practitioner (NP) students are educated, has not incorporated this content into standard curricula. We describe an innovative approach to incorporate DEA X-waiver training in a required community health NP in partnership with addiction medicine clinicians. Advanced practice NP students (N = 114) either completed fully online or hybrid (virtual didactic and online) X-waiver training on MOUD. We describe how an interprofessional partnership to incorporate MOUD education into graduate nursing curricula is a feasible method for training students to treat OUD in the context of the pandemic. This approach is responsive to the crucial need for more health care providers to address the opioid overdose crisis.

INTERPROFESSIONAL ROLES AND COLLABORATIONS TO ADDRESS COVID-19 PANDEMIC CHALLENGES IN NURSING HOMES.

Nursing home experts and informatics nurses collaborated to develop guidelines for nursing homes that revealed partnership principles in action during the COVID-19 pandemic. This article describes efforts to define interprofessional nursing home staff roles within the partnership-based COVID-19 Response Guideline, and to examine changes in nursing practice compared to the pre-pandemic practice of nurses. The qualitative process of identification of nursing home staff roles revealed the extensive scope of interprofessional partnership needed to respond to the pandemic. Using the Omaha System structure, we compared these collective COVID-19 response interventions of Nursing Service roles with nursing interventions of RNs and LPN/LVNs defined in previous nursing home studies. This comparison showed the necessary transformation and collaboration among nurses needed for the pandemic response in nursing homes. The Omaha System Pandemic Guideline is available online and in the Omaha System Guidelines app for immediate use as COVID-19 response practice guidelines and references for interprofessional roles in nursing homes, as well as for multidisciplinary roles across diverse care settings. The guideline is an exemplar of how informatics can facilitate interprofessional and multidisciplinary partnership for nursing homes and other care settings. Future use of the guidelines for decision making and documentation related to infection prevention and control in nursing homes may improve care quality and health outcomes of residents and population.

Building Professional Bridges for Those Crossing Borders: Interprofessional Social Worker–Lawyer Training for Supporting Immigrant Clients

ABSTRACT In recent years, immigrant family apprehensions at the United States southern border have more than doubled. Those wishing to stay enter a complex legal process as they either fight for lawful status or remain unauthorized. The trauma many experienced may inhibit their ability to articulate claims to legal status. Yet several relief options are only available to applicants who have suffered trauma. Social worker-lawyer collaboration can enhance advocacy on such cases. Social work educators can train practitioners to engage in effective interprofessional partnerships. We developed an interprofessional training tailored to social worker–lawyer collaborations supporting immigrant clients. We present the curriculum structure and post-training survey results, and offer suggestions for social work education on interprofessional collaborations in immigrant client advocacy.

Fostering healthcare innovation: a qualitative study of dental implant product development by Thai university researchers

PurposeThis study investigated the conditions required to foster healthcare innovation. Due to the limited research and development (R&D) capability of the Thai private sector, universities are increasingly expected to be emerging sources of healthcare products. However, the lack of experience in research commercialization requires that whether and how Thai university researchers can serve this mission be explored.Design/methodology/approachA promising dental implant product development project was investigated using the single-case research methodology. In-depth interviews were conducted with three key members involved in this innovative project. Questions concerning how a team of university researchers could embark on and overcome the obstacles encountered during their entrepreneurial project were asked. Based on the conceptual foundation of academic entrepreneurship, primary and additional secondary data were analyzed to acquire knowledge of academic entrepreneurship in healthcare in an emerging economy.FindingsHealthcare inequality has generated entrepreneurial initiatives by healthcare researchers to develop low-cost dental implants. However, their efforts have been insufficient to progress to the commercialization stage. An informal relationship among socially oriented partners, including interdisciplinary experts, not-for-profit-oriented manufacturers and early adopters contributed to this project's success.Originality/valueTo foster healthcare innovation, the authors’ micro-level evidence of a socially oriented partnership on an informal basis indicates the need for inter-professional governance that maintains a cross-organizational environment between healthcare researchers and external parties. The future contributions to innovation management by healthcare professionals should be enhanced. A socially entrepreneurial model of healthcare innovation is suggested for further consideration as an enabling policy option for inter-professional partnership in emerging economies.

Healthcare workforce transformation: implementing patient-centered medical home standards in an academic medical center

BackgroundLarge scale implementation of new strategies and healthcare delivery standards in academic medical centers (AMCs) requires training of healthcare workforce at different stages of their medical career. The patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model for healthcare delivery involves adoption by all members of the healthcare workforce, including seasoned professionals and trainees. Though widely known, the PCMH model has been implemented sporadically at large AMCs and methods to implement the model across healthcare workforce have not been well-documented.MethodsTo meet all PCMH standards and achieve sustainable level 3 recognition, the authors implemented in 2014–2015 a multi-pronged approach that capitalized on existing educational infrastructure among faculty, residents, and medical students. Within 18 months, the authors applied new interdisciplinary practices and policies, redesigned residency training in continuity practices and extensively modified medical school curricula.ResultsThese innovative transformational education efforts addressed the six PCMH standards for faculty, residents, and undergraduate medical students. Faculty played a major role as system change agents and facilitators of learning. Residents learned to better understand patients’ cultural needs, identify ‘at-risk’ patients, ensure continuity of care, and assess and improve quality of care. Medical students were exposed to PCMH core standards throughout their training via simulations, training in the community and with patients, and evaluation tasks. By implementing these changes across the healthcare workforce, the AMC achieved PCMH status in a short time, changed practice culture and improved care for patients and the community. Since then, the AMC has been able to maintain PCMH recognition annually with minimal effort.ConclusionsSuccessful strategies that capitalize on existing strengths in infrastructure complemented by innovative educational offerings and inter-professional partnerships can be adapted by other organizations pursuing similar transformation efforts. This widespread transformation across the healthcare workforce facilitate a deep-rooted change that enabled our academic medical center to sustain PCMH recognition.

Nurses and Midwives as Global Partners to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in the Anthropocene.

To highlight ongoing and emergent roles of nurses and midwives in advancing the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 at the intersection of social and economic inequity, the climate crisis, interprofessional partnership building, and the rising status and visibility of the professions worldwide. Discussion paper. Literature review. Realizing the Sustainable Development Goals will require all nurses and midwives to leverage their roles and responsibility as advocates, leaders, clinicians, scholars, and full partners with multidisciplinary actors and sectors across health systems. Making measurable progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals is critical to human survival, as well as the survival of the planet. Nurses and midwives play an integral part of this agenda at local and global levels. Nurses and midwives can integrate the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals into their everyday clinical work in various contexts and settings. With increased attention to social justice, environmental health, and partnership building, they can achieve exemplary clinical outcomes directly while contributing to the United Nations 2030 Agenda on a global scale and raising the profile of their professions.
