Translating Interprofessional Education to Social Work & Other Behavioral Health Disciplines: Curricular Evaluation Using an Implementation Science Approach

ABSTRACT Evidence-informed, interprofessional education (IPE) programs in behavioral health are an important part of reform efforts to reduce fragmentation and increase quality of mental health and substance use disorder treatment. The aim of this study is to document an implementation science approach to translation of IPE, grounded in Interprofessional Education Collaborative competencies, to social work and other behavioral health graduate students and to evaluate selected implementation outcomes. Select implementation strategies from the “Expert Recommendations for Implementing Change” were used to guide implementation of our behavioral health IPE training. A mixed-methods design, including survey, observational, and focus group data, was used to evaluate select implementation outcomes of the IPE training program. Data indicate positive perceptions of feasibility, acceptability, adoption, appropriateness, and fidelity of the IPE training program, with mean scores ranging from 4.25 to 4.45 (5-point likert scale) on items related to acceptability, appropriateness and adoption. Themes that emerged from qualitative data included recommendations of relational and experiential strategies to improve fidelity. Evaluation of implementation outcomes identifies additional strategies to enhance learning and fidelity to IPEC competencies. Implementation science offers a helpful framework for carrying-out trainings in higher education and beyond.

Interprofessional Curriculum Delivery: Experience of a Primary Care Education Program.

Few post-graduate training programs offer a comprehensive curriculum that includes structured clinical experiences to teach interprofessional care. To address this need, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Academic Affiliations funded the Centers of Excellence in Primary Care Education (CoEPCE) from 2011-2019 to provide interprofessional curricula for health profession trainees (HPTs), including physician residents, nurse practitioner residents, pharmacy residents, and psychology residents. We examined changes over time in curricular domains, system impacts, and program practices based on HPT survey data and the qualitative evaluation of narrative feedback. An annual survey was administered to participants. Indirect standardized ratios were calculated for interprofessional professional education (IPE) program domains, system impacts, and program practices. Qualitative responses were coded based on curricular domains and key program components. The study cohort included 369 HPTs. Site and profession standardized indirect ratios across all professions indicated improvements in curricular domains, system impacts, and program practices, with significant differences observed for associated health HPTs as compared to other HPTs for performance improvement. Qualitative data indicated that profession was associated with differences in perceptions of the curriculum. Although improvements occurred over time, our findings support the need for the thoughtful consideration of profession-specific identity characteristics when designing interprofessional curricula.

The Effect of Interprofessional Education on Student Readiness for Collaborative Practice.

Health care reform promotes interprofessional patient-centric health care models associated with improved population health outcomes. Interprofessional education (IPE) programs are necessary to cultivate collaborative care, yet little evidence exists to support IPE pedagogy within nursing and other health science academia. This quasiexperimental study examined differences in pre- and posttest Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) scores following an IPE intervention. The IPE intervention consisted of a video presentation and a debriefing session after a simulated interprofessional collaborative patient care conference that introduced baccalaureate nursing and health science students to the roles and responsibilities of clinicians in team-based primary care. Pre- and postintervention RIPLS scores were analyzed. Pre- and postintervention RIPLS scores increased across all subscales, with distinct variation between nursing and health science student subscales. This IPE intervention had positive effects on students' readiness for interprofessional learning. Additional research is warranted to support health science pedagogy. Perception of online interprofessional education among pharmacy and medical students in tertiary university

Background: The COVID-19 crisis impacted the educational system worldwide, which shifted from face-to-face sessions to online learning modes. However, online delivery should not jeopardise the outcome of students learning from interprofessional education (IPE) and should integrate students from different professional backgrounds closer. Objective: To identify the perception of medical and pharmacy students towards online IPE activity at Taylor’s University, Malaysia. Method: An online cross-sectional questionnaire was distributed to second and fourth-year students from the medical and pharmacy programmes. Students were considered to have a positive perception if their total score was above the median score. Result: More than half of the students (53.6%) showed positive perceptions towards the online IPE programme. Medical students had the highest percentage of students (54.9%) showing greater positive perceptions compared to pharmacy students (52.7%). Both health sciences students possessed the highest score on all the SPICE instrument’s domains. Conclusion: This discovery offers valuable insights into the interprofessional competency of students engaged in online IPE activities at their current academic level. It underscores the imperative of integrating online IPE activities into the curriculum design to equip students with the competence necessary for effective collaboration within an interprofessional team.

Development of interprofessional education programmes in nursing care and oral healthcare for dental and nursing students

BackgroundInterprofessional education (IPE) is essential for healthcare students to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams. This study aimed to identify the effect of IPE programmes in nursing care and oral healthcare on dental and nursing students’ perceptions of interprofessional collaboration.MethodsThe study included 101 third-year dental and 98 fourth-year nursing students. The participants were divided into mixed-professional groups of four (2 dental and 2 nursing students). They participated in nursing care and oral healthcare training programmes that included student-on-student training and discussion groups. Questionnaires regarding perceptions of interprofessional collaboration were distributed to the participants before and after the programmes to compare the programmes before and after and between the dental and nursing students. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test and chi-square test were used to compare the data.ResultsData from 79 dental students (42 males and 37 females) and 89 nursing students (4 males and 85 females) who completed both questionnaires were used for the comparisons. Perceptions of the differences between the approaches of different health professionals to nursing care, the roles of other professionals, and the need for multiprofessional collaboration improved significantly among both dental and nursing students after the programmes. Although the perception of their ability to communicate with unfamiliar or new people improved significantly only among the nursing students, other perceptions of their ability to communicate did not improve for either group. More dental students than nursing students chose nursing trainings as good programmes to participate in with other professional students, while more nursing students than dental students chose oral care trainings as good programmes. Many students commented that they learned about nursing and oral healthcare skills as well as the importance of teamwork and communication with other professionals. Seven students commented that they were more motivated to become dentists and nurses.ConclusionsThis study showed that IPE programmes for nursing care and oral healthcare might be effective at helping students understand other professionals and promoting multiprofessional collaboration. However, further studies are needed to develop IPE programmes to improve attitudes and abilities related to interprofessional communication skills.

The mental health consequences of COVID-19 on a sample of health professions students: a mixed methods study

Objective: To assess and examine how the COVID-19 pandemic may have impacted the mental health of a sample of health professions students (HPS) using an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design. Participants: Participants included 41 HPS enrolled in a co-curricular interprofessional education (IPE) program. Measurements: Measures included the CES-D scale, PSS scale, and the GAD scale. Qualitative description was used to explore the experiences of these HPS. Results: The HPS explained that fear of acquiring COVID-19, transmitting the virus to loved ones, and dying as a result of the disease negatively influenced their mental health. The HPS revealed that there were some beneficial outcomes resulting from the pandemic, including the strengthening of family bonds and the cultivation of resiliency. Conclusions: The pandemic has had a negative impact on the mental health of these HPS. It is essential that these students receive support for their mental health in order to provide optimal care to the population they serve.

Changes of Interprofessional Education in Athletic Training: A 5-Year Follow-up Study

Interprofessional Education (IPE) prepares students in the healthcare field for collaborative practices. Faculty perceptions of IPE have been investigated among several health professions. We assess athletic training (AT) faculty perceptions of the importance of the four IPE competencies, their attitudes towards IPE, their attitudes and beliefs about IPE in the academic settings, their perceived barriers, and opportunities towards implementing IPE in AT curricula; and how these have changed. This study utilized a cross-sectional online survey administered anonymously in 2017 and 2022. The study population was faculty from accredited AT education programs in the USA identified through the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). We find that in the last five years, faculty perception of IPE has shifted to a more positive attitude toward understanding and implementing IPE in AT programs. However, data showed no significant differences between the initial and follow-up studies. Values and ethics and teams and teamwork were the two competencies ranked the highest in both studies. Younger respondents ranked communication higher than older respondents. Barriers to IPE implementation included lack of resources, allocated funding, and institutional support. The creation of an IPE program coordinator was one of the opportunities highlighted. Faculty of AT programs are aware of the importance of IPE and demonstrated a general positive attitude toward implementing IPE in their AT curricula. However, several barriers have been identified, including a perceived negative attitudes toward AT from other health professions.

Insights of undergraduate health sciences students about a French interprofessional training initiative

Background Incorporating interprofessional collaboration within healthcare is critical to delivery of patient-centered care. Interprofessional Education (IPE) programs are key to promoting such collaboration. The ‘Public Health Service' (PHS) in France is a mandatory IPE initiative that embodies this collaborative spirit, bringing together students from varied health undergraduate training programs—nursing, physiotherapy, pharmacy, midwifery, and medicine— in a common training program focused on primary prevention. The aim of the study was to assess the experience and attitudes of students in the five health training programs regarding the interest of IPEs in the PHS.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was administered to 823 students from the 2022–2023 cohort at a French university. The questionnaire was designed with 12 Likert-scale questions specifically created to evaluate the students' experiences, knowledge, and attitudes focused on IPE during the practical seminars, school interventions, and the overall PHS. Additionally, an open-ended question was utilized to gather qualitative data. Statistical analyses assessed satisfaction levels across undergraduate training programs, while thematic analysis was applied to the qualitative responses.ResultsWithin the surveyed cohort, 344 students responded to the survey. The findings showed that students were satisfied with the interprofessional collaboration, both in practical teaching sessions (75% satisfaction) and in primary prevention projects conducted in schools (70% satisfaction), despite their having faced challenges with coordination. Pharmacy students, in particular, highlighted the need for adjustments in program scheduling. The qualitative feedback underscored the positive value of IPE, notwithstanding the organizational difficulties stemming from different academic timetables.ConclusionThe student feedback indicated a high level of satisfaction with the interprofessional work carried out in both the practical teaching and the primary prevention projects. To further enhance the educational impact and address the scheduling complexities, it is recommended that program refinements be made based on student feedback and pedagogical best practices.

The Virtual Geriatric Assessment Interdisciplinary Team Project: Interprofessional Geriatric Training Against the Backdrop of COVID-19.

Interprofessional geriatric education programs enhance trainees' knowledge of older adults, and the valuable contributions health and social care practitioners make to their well-being when specialists work collaboratively. In response to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, in-person geriatric interprofessional education (IPE) programs were redesigned for virtual delivery. Nineteen virtual programs were held between September 2020 and December 2022. Of the 369 health and social care trainees who participated, 67.2% completed both pre- and post-program surveys. Survey instruments included the Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey (ICASS), which measures perceptions associated with patient-centered, team-based, collaborative care. Significant differences were obtained across ICASS domains, including communication, conflict management/resolution, and team functioning, suggesting that virtual programs may enhance attitudes and perceived abilities for interprofessional collaborative practice. Furthermore, participants' perceived understanding of older adult needs improved, as did their interest in geriatrics. Results illustrate that virtual geriatric interprofessional (IP) programs may be viable alternatives to in-person opportunities.

Interprofessional education in undergraduate dental curricula: A systematic review.

Health professionals who effectively communicate and coordinate their work increase patient safety and quality of care. Therefore, an interprofessional education (IPE) program may be a valuable addition to the curriculum of health science courses. This study aims to verify how IPE has been implemented in undergraduate dental program curricula. This is a qualitative systematic review performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines with qualitative and qualitative-quantitative studies selected in the period between 2011 and 2021. The guiding question was as follows: how has IPE been implemented in undergraduate dentistry curricula around the world? The quality of the included articles was assessed using the CASP Qualitative Checklist (2018). After the review, 22 studies were selected and data were extracted following the acronym PICo (Population, phenomenon of Interest, and COntext). The majority of studies in which IPE is included in Dentistry come from North American universities. Regarding the IPE teaching methodology, the use of active methodologies was observed and the interprofessional skills most common were role clarity, teamwork, and communication. This systematic review indicated that Dentistry is included in interprofessional activities in many studies around the world, and primarily with colleagues in medicine, nursing, and pharmacy programs. IPE teaching takes place through the use of active methodologies and develops important skills for interprofessional work.

An interprofessional approach to collaborative management of low-back pain in primary care: A scholarly analysis of a successful educational module for prelicensure learners.

In 2008, an interprofessional education (IPE) working group was formed to develop a module on interdisciplinary low-back pain management to fill a curricular gap at our institution. This article describes the program evaluation outcomes and highlights factors contributing to its successful implementation over 8 years through reference to Brigg's Presage-Process-Product (3-P) Model of Teaching and Learning. Program evaluation occurred through administration of a pre- and postmodule Health Professional Collaborative Competency Perception Scale, with scores compared using paired t tests. Descriptive statistics were analyzed from 5-point Likert scales for module session components. A total of 853 students from 9 health care occupations (medicine, chiropractic, physiotherapy, pharmacy, nursing, nurse practitioner, occupational therapy, physiotherapy assistants, and occupational therapist assistants) participated in 51 iterations of the module from 2011 to 2019, averaging 16 participants each session. All Health Professional Collaborative Competency Perception Scale items significantly improved from pre- to postintervention (p < .001) for learners from 6 health professions. Module components were rated highly, with the majority of learners rating these as 4 (helpful) or 5 (very helpful) for their learning. Participants also improved their scores in perceived history and physical exam comfort, knowledge of pharmacotherapy, management options, and attitudes regarding an interprofessional approach to back pain (p < .001). This article describes the presage, process factors, and products of this model IPE program that provides learners from various health care professions with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the interdisciplinary management of low-back pain, as demonstrated through improvement in collaborative competencies.

Exploring undergraduate clinical students’ perspectives on interprofessional education

Interprofessional Education (IPE) has been advocated to prepare future healthcare professionals for collaborative practice to improve the quality of patient care and overall health outcomes. The problem statement revolves around the need to bridge the gap between the traditional, silos education of healthcare disciplines and the demands of a modern healthcare ecosystem. Insufficient IPE can result in fragmented patient care, communication breakdowns and suboptimal outcomes. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the perceptions of undergraduate clinical students from Malaysian higher institutions about Interprofessional Education (IPE). This study was conducted among undergraduate final-year students of clinical programs, including nursing, Medical, Nursing, Pharmacy and Health Sciences programs in selected private and public Malaysian higher institutions. The quantitative data was analysed via descriptive statistics using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Overall, the study received 288 responses from four public institutions and 3 private institutions. About 94.4% (272) of respondents claimed perceived needs for IPE. Most students agreed that patient care and critical patient care in general wards and community chronic patient care should be included in the content of IPE. More than 80% of the respondents agreed collaboration and teamwork, mutual understanding for other disciplines/professionals, conflict control and effective communication are the essential skills to be learned by IPE. The three most wanted IPE learning methods are lecture and discussion, clinical rotation, and role-playing. This study revealed differences in needs and perceptions regarding IPE between programs. This finding warrants further research to design appropriate IPE program goals and strategies that suit specific students' needs.

Rural and regional maternity managers’ and educators’ views of the Maternity and Newborn Emergencies (MANE) education program in Victoria, Australia: a qualitative descriptive study

BackgroundAustralia has one of the lowest perinatal morbidity and mortality rates in the world, however a cluster of perinatal deaths at a regional health service in the state of Victoria in 2015 led to state-wide reforms, including the introduction of the Maternity and Newborn Emergencies (MANE) program. MANE was a 2-day interprofessional maternity education program delivered by external expert facilitators to rural and regional Victorian maternity service providers. An independent evaluation found that the MANE program improved the confidence and knowledge of clinicians in managing obstetric emergencies and resulted in changes to clinical practice. While there is a large volume of evidence that supports the use of interprofessional education in improving clinicians’ clinical practice, the impact of these programs on the overall safety culture of a health service has been less studied. Managers and educators have an important role in promoting the safety culture and clinical governance of the heath service. The aim of this study, therefore, was to explore Victorian rural and regional maternity managers’ and educators’ views and experiences of the MANE program.MethodsMaternity managers and educators from the 17 regional and rural health services across Victoria that received the MANE program during 2018 and 2019 were invited to participate. Semi-structured interviews using mostly open-ended questions (and with a small number of fixed response questions) were undertaken. Qualitative data were transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically. Descriptive statistics were used for quantitative data.ResultsTwenty-one maternity managers and educators from the 17 health services participated in the interviews. Overall, participants viewed the MANE program positively. Four themes were identified: the value of external facilitation in providing obstetric emergency training; improved awareness and understanding of clinical governance; improved clinical practice; and the importance of maintaining the program. Participants agreed that MANE had improved the confidence (94%) and skills (94%) of clinicians in managing obstetric emergencies, as well as confidence to escalate concerns (94%), and most agreed that it had improved clinical practice (70%) and teamwork among attendees (82%).ConclusionMaternity managers and educators were positive about MANE; they considered that it contributed to improving factors that impact the safety culture of health services, with delivery by external experts considered to be particularly important. Given the crucial role of maternity managers and educators on safety culture in health services, as well in program facilitation, these findings are important for future planning of maternity education programs across the state.Trial registrationTrial registration was not required for this study.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to validate the effectiveness of an Interprofessional Education (IPE) program developed and implemented within an informal educational setting among health science students. This will be achieved by setting up an experimental group and a control group among the students, comparing and analyzing them to assess the program's impact. The aim is to utilize these findings as evidence supporting the necessity and significance of integrating such programs into formal curricula. Methods : The homogeneity of the two groups in terms of the general characteristics of the subjects was assessed using the χ2-test and presented in terms of frequencies and percentages. To compare the differences in effectiveness between the experimental and control groups, means, standard deviations, and t-tests were employed. The validation of research hypotheses was conducted using t-tests. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS 25.0 software. Results : This study is a non-equivalent post-test research paper that validates the effects of an Interprofessional Education (IPE) program by comparing an experimental group, consisting of&#x0D; students from three departments in the health science field who participated in the IPE, with a control group who did not. The results of the program's effectiveness verification supported Teamwork Roles and Responsibilities, Experts Biases. However, Patient-centeredness, Diversity and Ethics, Community-centeredness, and Experts Communication were rejected. Conclusion : Students from three departments in the health science field developed an Interprofessional Education (IPE) intervention program, aiming to provide an understanding of theoretical and practical education courses in other departments and offer experiential opportunities in each department. Critical thinking processes among professionals and communication are necessary for problem-solving among participants. Future research requires the development of suitable measurement tools for interprofessional aspects among health science students and intervention research for program development.

Students’ meaning-making processes in an IPE programme with students from education-, health-, and social care programmes. A qualitative study

Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is increasingly being recognised as an important mechanism to improve the quality of services offered to children. This study imparts results from an investigation of undergraduate students’ participation in an interprofessional education (IPE) programme focusing on working with children (0–18). The programme participants include students across the disciplines of education, health, and social care. In the study the students’ accounts of group processes by which they negotiated their positions and the relevance of their emerging professional knowledge in interprofessional student groups are explored. The more overarching aim is to contribute to a knowledge base serving the development of broad IPE initiatives. Qualitative interviews were conducted with students (n = 15) to explore their experiences participating in the programme. Positioning theory was used as an analytical framework. The results indicate that the students’ joint constructions of the aim of the learning activity were vital for their joint meaning-making in the interprofessional learning (IPL) groups and for processes of positioning. In addition, students’ participation in the IPL groups was closely linked to their approach to negotiations of relevance. The pedagogical implications of these results are discussed.

Hyperacusis Diagnosis and Management in the United States: Clinical Audiology Practice Patterns.

Hyperacusis often leads to debilitating psychosocial consequences, but there is no standard protocol for its diagnosis and management in the United States. In this study, we surveyed U.S. clinical audiologists to understand their education and clinical practices surrounding the evaluation and treatment of hyperacusis. An online survey was distributed to clinical audiologists across the United States. Survey responses were quantified using descriptive statistics and inductive content analysis. Hyperacusis definitions and clinical practice patterns varied widely across the 102 respondents. Respondents cited a lack of education and training as the primary barrier to effective audiological diagnosis and management of hyperacusis, with most respondents reporting ≤ 5 hr of hyperacusis education. Other primary barriers to effective audiological management of hyperacusis included time constraints, reimbursement, poor sensitivity and specificity of available diagnostic tools, and poor efficacy of available treatments and management strategies. Most respondents (82.5%) agreed that audiologists are the primary professionals who are responsible for implementing hyperacusis interventions. However, 63.3% of respondents reported that their clinic does not have a hyperacusis management protocol, and 80.0% routinely recommend treatment that is outside their scope of practice to implement (cognitive behavioral therapy). Clinical audiologists in the United States do not receive uniform education on hyperacusis, and they report multiple barriers to its evidence-based diagnosis and management. Effective hyperacusis management necessitates a multidisciplinary approach. The information obtained via this survey will pave the way toward the refinement of interprofessional education programs and the development of systematic, evidence-based clinical protocols for hyperacusis. https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24431188.

Interprofessional Education: An Innovative Approach to Increase the Human Immunodeficiency Virus Workforce.

Ending the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic relies on a robust clinical workforce. The Southeast AIDS Education and Training Center's interprofessional education program is a novel approach to increasing the interest and ability of early health professional learners to provide high-quality, comprehensive, person-first care for people with HIV. Key Points: Interprofessional education (IPE) focusing on multidisciplinary care for people with HIV can serve as a novel way to increase the HIV workforce. This brief report describes the IPE program of the Southeast AIDS Education and Training Center.

Oral Health Care Strategies in Rural Communities: A Case Study.

Dental caries affect 97% of the world's population during their lifetime. Early childhood caries are the number one chronic disease affecting young children, and it disproportionately affects children of low-income families. American Academy of Pediatrics recommends fluoridated toothpaste to all children starting at tooth eruption, regardless of caries risk. In addition, fluoride varnish is recommended in all children every 3 to 6 months from tooth emergence until they have an established dental home. The health disparities that are most apparent in the rural communities are inadequate prenatal care, low birth weight, cancer, chronic respiratory disease, heart disease, unintentional injury, and stroke. When it comes to oral health, water fluoridation is one of the most cost-effective strategies in preventing dental caries. The need for oral health education in physician assistant/associate (PA) programs is well documented. Implementation has largely been performed using interprofessional education. This article describes an interprofessional education program that teaches PA students to apply fluoride varnish so that they are practice-ready when they graduate and practice medicine.
