Interpersonal Communication Between Transgender and Cisgender People: A Polish-Canadian Comparison

Interpersonal communication between transgender/gender-diverse and cisgender people is an understudied area within the fields of communication studies and gender studies; studies on Canadian and Polish interpersonal communication dynamics involving these demographic groups are even rarer. The purpose of this research project therefore was two-fold. On an applied level, this study sought to document and analyze interpersonal communication dynamics between transgender/gender-diverse and cisgender people in Poland and Canada, respectively. On a theoretical level, this study sought to extend interpersonal transgender communication theory. Based on in-depth interviews conducted with 44 participants in Canada and Poland, the authors identified common positive and negative interpersonal communication experiences between transgender/gender-diverse and cisgender people within each nation. The thematic analysis uncovered similarities and differences; quotations from the interviews allowed for identification of concrete moments in interpersonal communication encounters. Findings were analyzed from the perspective of recent articulations of communication accommodation theory (CAT) with particular emphasis on the role of accommodation and nonaccommodation, affective motives, and skills training. The relevance of accommodative communication behavior and the significance of perceived communicative intent emerged as key findings.

Explaining the Role of Experiences in Shaping the Professional Identity of Medical Residents of Tehran University Medical Sciences

Background: The important central theme in the career is one’s professional self-concept based on attributes, beliefs, values, motives, and experiences regarding the professional identity. Recently, there has been a growing interest in how a physician's professional identity is shaped by education and experience. Objectives: This study aimed to illuminate the role of experience in shaping the professional identity of Tehran University of Medical Sciences medical residents. Methods: Eighteen 26 - 40 years old residents (male and female) in four Major specialty groups, including obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, and internal medicine, participated in this qualitative content analysis study. Sampling was done in four specialty hospitals of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Data were gathered through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed by conventional content analysis. Results: Results showed four main categories of effective experiences in Shaping of residents' professional identity formation, including interpersonal communication experiences, independent professional work, general medical education course, knowledge, and educational background.in this study also, sub-categories extracted from the findings were: (1) forced scheme; (2) symbolic events; (3) learnt competencies of GP; (4) beneficial reforms and integration in general medical education; (5) the education quality level among families; and (6) the education quality level among schools and institutes. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the previous unique constructive experiences of assistants are one of the most important underlying factors in shaping their professional identity. Interpersonal communication experiences, independent professional work, general medicine training courses, and knowledge and educational background are the unique experiences of any assistant. By creating constructive experiences, it is possible to positively affect the formation of the professional identity of the assistants so that they can be accountable to society.

Efficacy of nasal stimulants on interpersonal communication - a narrative review.

The aim of this paper is to review the use of nasal stimulants in interpersonal communication. The literature survey was performed from PubMed, ProQuest Central database of Anadolu University, and Google Scholar. Throughout history, various materials have been used as nasal stimulants to communicate and socialize intensively. Snuff is tobacco inhaled into the nostrils. It goes through the nasal mucosa into the blood and affects the neural system. Maras Powder is also a smokeless tobacco type common in the southeast of Turkey, especially in Gaziantep and Maras, which gave its name to the product. Cocaine is made from the coca plant, and it can be in the form of powder and rock. The rock one is also known as crack. It passes through the nostrils and is absorbed in the blood, causing paranoias, sleeplessness, extreme energy, and more confidence. When oxytocin is said, some positive words come to mind, such as socializing, relationships, feeling of trust, and understanding. It is a hormone and neurotransmitter. Increasing interpersonal communication in the shortest time is an important issue today. Online meetings, the ability of different people to work on the same file simultaneously over the computer, cause individuals to distance themselves from each other and decrease communication among them. Despite being in the same social environment, friends often communicate with others with their smartphones instead of having face-to-face relations. To increase interpersonal communication experience, events involving alcohol take is the mostly commonly used one. Nasal snuff, cocaine, crack, and oxytocin abolish self-control which affects interpersonal communication negatively at the end of the day.

Effect of Multivoice Chorus on Interpersonal Communication Disorder.

Objective As a type of music therapy, multipart chorus does not have high requirements for participants, and the basic level can be high or low. For college students, it is more likely to participate. Exploring the effect of multivoice chorus intervention on college students' mental health can provide reference for school psychological correction work. This study uses multivoice chorus as a means, combined with certain group psychological counseling techniques, to try to explore a new model for improving the mental health of college students. Method Fifty college students in prison were selected as subjects and randomly divided into the control group and experimental group. The multivoice chorus method was used to conduct an intervention test on the mental health of the college students in the experimental group, and the observation was carried out for 3 months. Before and after the intervention, the anxiety self-rating scale, the trust scale, the social avoidance and distress scale, the shyness scale, the UCLA loneliness scale, and the college student psychological test personality subtest were used for psychological testing and evaluation. Results/Discussion. College students can actively recognize and reflect on their own behavior, and objectively evaluate others. Through the cognition and management of emotions, college students can handle personal emotions well in interpersonal communication. In the later stage of multivoice chorus, they can help each other, establish a mutual assistance system, help each other, and discuss and learn interpersonal communication skills together, so that college students can learn good interpersonal communication experience and skills from others in various interactions, achieve self-help, and promote college students to work together. In the process of interfering with interpersonal communication disorder, simple psychological counseling has also improved the phenomenon of interpersonal communication disorder, but the experimental effect is far from the effect of the combination of music education and psychological counseling, and it is relatively unstable in the stability test. In the specific operation, in the purely psychological counseling process, college students with interpersonal barriers do not actively cooperate with the intervention, the operating atmosphere is relatively dull, and the teachers are time-consuming and labor-intensive during the psychological counseling process, but the results are minimal. The only effect is also worn out within a few weeks, and the stability is poor. It can be seen that music education has played a pivotal role as a medium in the intervention of interpersonal communication disorders, which can make the intervention process easier, more effective, and more stable.

ASIAN COMMUNICATION EXPERIENCE IN THE MID OF CORONA PANDEMIC

This research is motivated by case that is happening right now, where the world is being hit by a virus called covid-19, this virus started in Wuhan, China. The spread of the Covid-19 virus which has reached 226 countries has caused the death toll to continue to rise. To date, the total number of Covid-19 cases worldwide stands at 505 million cases with a death toll of 6 million. Various efforts have been made by the government together with the medical team to find ways to stop virus Covid-19. One of them is by creating a vaccine that is considered capable of reducing the death rate caused by the Covid-19. Asia, as the region that was first affected by this virus and is considered the area where the Covid-19 virus emerged, certainly brings a lot of speculation and opinion from other countries. This is what is then felt by Asian students who continue their education abroad, one of which is in Egypt. Of course this has an impact on the communication experience they feel during this pandemic due to their status as students who come from countries in Asia. The purpose of this study was to determine the interpersonal communication experience experienced by Asian students who are currently in Egypt as an area affected by COVID-19.The method used in this research is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. The data collection technique used is interviews. The data analysis technique uses the Miles and Huberman interactive model analysis. And the data validity technique in this study uses source triangulation. The results of the study showed that there were unpleasant experiences experienced by Asian students where they were discriminated against as Asian and accused of causing the corona virus in Egypt. The forms of treatment received by the Asian students included being quipped when they were in public places such as on roads, markets or shopping centers. Then ridiculed sarcastically (roughly) as Corona in a public place, shunned when in public transportation and shoping centre and not even served when in food stores.

Potential of Augmented Reality Platforms to Improve Individual Hearing Aids and to Support More Ecologically Valid Research.

An augmented reality (AR) platform combines several technologies in a system that can render individual “digital objects” that can be manipulated for a given purpose. In the audio domain, these may, for example, be generated by speaker separation, noise suppression, and signal enhancement. Access to the “digital objects” could be used to augment auditory objects that the user wants to hear better. Such AR platforms in conjunction with traditional hearing aids may contribute to closing the gap for people with hearing loss through multimodal sensor integration, leveraging extensive current artificial intelligence research, and machine-learning frameworks. This could take the form of an attention-driven signal enhancement and noise suppression platform, together with context awareness, which would improve the interpersonal communication experience in complex real-life situations. In that sense, an AR platform could serve as a frontend to current and future hearing solutions. The AR device would enhance the signals to be attended, but the hearing amplification would still be handled by hearing aids. In this article, suggestions are made about why AR platforms may offer ideal affordances to compensate for hearing loss, and how research-focused AR platforms could help toward better understanding of the role of hearing in everyday life.

Clinical communication preferences in cystic fibrosis and strategies to optimize care.

The importance of optimizing communication between clinicians and individuals and families living with cystic fibrosis (CF) about daily care, adherence, and related psychosocial concerns is well documented. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of interpersonal communication experiences and preferences among individuals and families living with CF as they engage with the clinical team. The study also aimed to reveal opportunities for enhancing future interpersonal communication practices. Five U.S. CF care centers participated in the following activities: (a) On-site observation of clinic interactions during outpatient visits; (b) On-site 1:1 interviews with individuals living with CF, their family members, and CF clinicians; (d) Focus groups conducted in person with CF care team members; (d) Focus groups conducted virtually with adults and family members with CF. Content analysis of transcripts and constant comparative methods were used to identify emergent themes. Four themes related to participants' needs and preferences for clinic interactions emerged during analysis: (a) eliciting psychosocial concerns, (b) addressing childhood development and transitions, (c) negotiating agendas and sharing decisions, and (d) educating to enhance CF conversations. CF clinicians and individuals and families living with CF expressed the need for resources and training to engage in better conversations with each other. Participants identified areas of high priority, including working together around social, psychological, and economic challenges, preparation for transition to adulthood, and sustaining daily care. Findings point to the value of developing advanced communication skills that foster trust-building, negotiating agendas, active listening, and collaborative goal-setting.

Competing Discourses of Professional-patient Relationships in Type 2 Diabetes Management

ABSTRACT Type 2 diabetes is a contradictory chronic illness that needs to be managed in cooperation with health care professionals. Despite the significant role of the professional-patient relationship in diabetes management, the meaning of this relationship as part of diabetes management has not yet been studied. The aim of this qualitative study is to describe the competing discourses of professional-patient relationships in type 2 diabetes management. As a background theory, the study applied the relational dialectics theory (RDT) 2.0 by analyzing discourses in patients’ interpersonal communication experiences with health care professionals. Overall, 63 experiences were analyzed using contrapuntal analysis. According to the results, both the patients’ positive and negative descriptions were connected to three struggling discourses: 1) having the right to care versus deserving care, 2) guidance versus control, and 3) personalization versus standardization. These discourses offered new perspectives to clarify and strengthen the role of professional-patient relationships in type 2 diabetes management.

Problematic communications during 2016 fellowship recruitment in internal medicine

ABSTRACTSome internal medicine residency program directors have expressed concerns that their third-year residents may have been subjected to inappropriate communication during the 2016 fellowship recruitment season. The authors sought to study applicants’ interpersonal communication experiences with fellowship programs. Many respondents indicated that they had been asked questions that would constitute violations of the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) Communications Code of Conduct agreement, including how they plan to rank specific programs. Moreover, female respondents were more likely to have been asked questions during interview experiences about other programs to which they applied, and about their family plans. Post-interview communication policies were not made clear to most applicants. These results suggest ongoing challenges for the internal medicine community to improve communication with applicants and uniform compliance with the NRMP communications code of conduct during the fellowship recruitment process.

Living with cognitive-communicative difficulties following traumatic brain injury: Using a model of interpersonal communication to characterize the subjective experience

This study was undertaken to better understand the subjective experience of long-term cognitive-communicative impairments following severe cerebral insult. An additional aim was to explore the utility of a model of interpersonal communication in elucidating how such difficulties affect communicative interactions. Participants in the study were five dyads in which one member had sustained a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Data collection and analysis utilized both qualitative and quantitative methodology. It was found that individuals with long-term TBI continue to experience significant communication difficulties, which in combination with problems of memory, fatigue and irritability commonly generate unsatisfactory interpersonal communication experiences. The model of interpersonal communication provided a useful framework for considering why these interactions are ineffective or unsatisfactory. It is felt that the methodology outlined in this paper may offer a useful means of investigating the relationship between neurogenic communication impairments/disabilities and interpersonal communication difficulties experienced by individuals from a variety of clinical populations.

Sources of Drug Information among Adults

A telephone survey of 206 adults was conducted to test hypotheses concerning past information seeking, source preference, and media consumption. Subjects who had obtained information from “expert” institutional sources were predicted to have greater drug knowledge and interpersonal communication experience. Higher print consumers were predicted to have greater knowledge, increased favorability toward marijuana decriminalization and exhibit a less punitive orientation toward drug users. Support was found with regard to drug knowledge and interpersonal communication. Partial support was found with regard to other hypotheses.
