Dimensional stability and surface hardness of inter-occlusal recording materials

It is important to choose the appropriate interocclusal registration material for precise articulation and successful dental prosthesis fabrication. 3 types of interocclusal registration materials: Bite registration wax, polyvinyl siloxane bite registration paste and Bisacryl-based bite registration paste were evaluated for dimensional stability and surface hardness at 4 different time intervals. One way ANOVA test, multiple Post Hoc Tukey HSD test and nonparametric test were performed. Bisacryl-based bite registration material exhibited better dimensional stability and surface hardness than polyvinyl siloxane and bite registration wax at all 4 time intervals. Thus dimensional stability and surface hardness of interocclusal registration material was influenced by both the type of material and the time duration.

Background In completely edentulous patients, maintaining the patient's temporomandibular joint (TMJ) health and intraoral components is very important, which can be achieved by an accurate interocclusal record, which can we taken by various materials and also at various stages. Simulation of the temporomandibular joint anatomy and mandibular movements is possible on a semi-adjustable articulator, which is widely used in prosthodontics. Transferring the record on articulator is a critical step in the fabrication of complete dentures so it should be done precisely to reduce chair side time and also to avoid complications for patients. This study examines which material is more accurate and records which stage gives more precision, by comparing the Condylar guidance on radiographs. This is because it is a fairly consistent bony landmark and can be used for correlating with the clinical methods in terms of verification. The objective is to determine the inter occlusal records created during the Jaw Relation stage and Try-in using reinforced wax and Polyvinyl siloxane and compare these values to the condylar guidance obtained by oethopantomogram (OPG). Methods Recording the Condylar Guidance value on OPG by tracing the Glenoid fossa, Articular eminence and the Frankfurt Horizontal Plane. Followed by conventional steps in making complete dentures, at jaw relation and try-in stage. We will record values of condylar guidance with the two different Interocclusal record materials. Expected result It will help the clinicians to gain knowledge about obtaining precise condylar inclination angle by using suitable interocclusal record materials. Conclusions This study will help us to obtain condylar inclination which inturn helps the patients satisfaction as it preserves the intraoral components and health of TMJ.

A Comparative Study to Evaluate the Linear Dimensional Change and Compression Resistance of Four Elastomeric Interocclusal Recording Materials: An in vitro Study.

The purpose of this study was to assess the linear dimensional changes in the four elastomeric interocclusal recording materials as well as the material's resistance to compression during the cast mounting on the articulator. All four elastomeric materials showed decreasing stability over time and 2 mm thickness showed the highest compression resistance with minimal articulation error. Dimensional stability depends on material and time factors, and compressive resistance decreases with increasing thickness.

In Vitro Assessment of Dimensional Accuracy of Three Different Types of Interocclusal Recording Materials.

The aim of the current study was to evaluate the dimensional accuracy of three various interocclusal recording materials. A total of 90 disc-shaped samples were prepared using polyether paste, wax, and polyvinyl siloxane material with the support of stainless steel die. For the purposes of this investigation, three frequently utilized interocclusal recording materials were chosen, and 30 samples from each material were prepared. Group I: Bite registration using polyether paste; Group II: Bite registration using wax; Group III: Bite registration using polyvinyl siloxane material. No samples were exposed to direct sunlight during storage and were kept at room temperature. Using a 10x universal measuring microscope, each sample disc was examined for the presence of horizontal and vertical lines inscripted in the die. For each of the samples, readings were taken at different time periods of 24, 48, and 72 hours. After 24 hours, the less dimensional changes were found in polyether paste group (0.11 ± 0.07) followed by polyvinyl siloxane material group (0.19 ± 0.04) and wax group (0.25 ± 0.12). After 48 hours, the less dimensional changes were found in polyether paste group (0.34 ± 0.02) followed by polyvinyl siloxane material group (0.42 ± 0.01) and wax group (0.94 ± 0.12). After 72 hours, the least dimensional changes were found in polyether paste group (0.46 ± 0.14) followed by polyvinyl siloxane material group (0.92 ± 0.03) and wax group (1.14 ± 0.09). The present study concluded that both the material and time factors had an impact on dimensional stability. The most dimensionally stable group was the polyether paste group, which was followed by the polyvinyl siloxane and wax material groups. Interocclusal recording material records the occlusal connection between real or artificial teeth for occlusal rehabilitation planning and for creating removable and fixed dentures. The creation of a clinically acceptable prosthesis is dependent upon the accuracy of the patient's diagnostic or working casts and the interocclusal record. Comparison of dimensional accuracy of various interocclusal recording materials: An in vitro study

Dimensional stability of commonly used interocclusal records is a significant factor for precise articulation of patient's diagnostic and working casts in the fabrication of well fitting prosthesis with satisfactory occlusion. The aim of this study was to measure the dimensional accuracy of modeli g wax, aluwax, addition silicone and modeling wax corrected with zinc oxide eugenol. Total of 80 samples were fabricated. The dimensional accuracy of these materials was tested in three planes i.e. anteroposteriorly, mediolaterally and vertically. The dimensional accuracy in horizontal plane was measured with travelling micro cope and in vertical plane with digital vernier caliper. The values obtained were stati tically analysed y A OVA and Tukey HSD-Honestly significa t difference. olyvi ylsiloxane was observed to be the most dimensionally accurate material and modeli g wax, the least accurate material of all the materials tested.

Comparison of accuracy of protrusive condylar guidance registration by two interocclusal recording materials in edentulous patients.

During complete denture fabrication making Interocclusal records plays an integral role to obtain the condylar guidance value. The study was conducted to compare the protrusive condylar guidance registration by two interocclusal recording materials-Quick setting plaster and Luxabite®(bisacrylic composite) in semi adjustable articulator for completely edentulous patients. Maxillary and Mandibular casts of the completely edentulous patients were mounted in Hanau®Wide Vue articulator. The Quick setting plaster and Luxabite®(bisacrylic composite) was used as interocclusal recording materials to program the protrusive condylar guidance angles in the articulators. The protrusive condylar guidance values registered in the articulator for the different interocclusal records were tabulated and statistically analyzed.. The mean protrusive condylar guidance values registered in the articulator was compared with two parameters obtained from the radiographic tracings -- the protrusive condylar path angle obtained with Quick setting plaster and Luxabite with the inclination of articular eminence to the Frankfort horizontal plane. From the study it was concluded that the Luxabite®(bisacrylic composite) material demonstrated better reproducibility of protrusive condylar guidance registration.than the Quick setting plaster.

Comparison of Linear Dimensional Stability among Three Different Types of Interocclusal Recording Materials: An In-vitro Study

Introduction: In routine dental practice, clinicians often face difficulty in selecting accurate interocclusal recording materials due to the introduction of numerous options in the market. Therefore, it is crucial to choose the appropriate material and use it correctly for the success of any prosthesis. Aim: To evaluate and compare the linear dimensional stability of three different types of interocclusal recording materials: polyvinyl siloxane bite registration paste (orangebite), polyether bite registration paste (ramitec), and bite registration wax (aluminium filled). Materials and Methods: An in-vitro study was conducted in the Department of Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge, with microscopic evaluation performed at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Microbiology at Maratha Mandal’s NGH Institute of Dental Sciences and Research Centre, Belagavi, Karnataka, India in September 2020 for a period of four days. A stainless steel die was used to make impressions, and materials were manipulated according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A total of 30 samples (10 for each material) were created. Three minutes after the respective setting time of each material, discs were separated from the die. The distance between two parallel lines was measured using a stereomicroscope at different time intervals: one hour, 24 hours, 48 hours, and 72 hours. Statistical analysis was performed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and the Mann-Whitney test. Results: In the intragroup comparison of dimensional changes at different time intervals, all three materials showed statistically insignificant results (p>0.05). However, statistically significant results (p≤0.05) were found when comparing the materials at different time points. Polyether bite registration material exhibited better dimensional stability than polyvinyl siloxane and bite registration wax at one hour, 24 hours, 48 hours, and 72 hours. Conclusion: Polyether demonstrated superior dimensional stability compared to polyvinyl siloxane and bite registration wax. Evaluation of dimensional stability, compressive resistance, and detail reproduction of thermoplastic resin (BDIMPRESS), elastomeric and composite bite registration material: An in vitro study.

The fabrication of an accurate prosthesis depends mainly on precise recording of the maxillo-mandibular relationship of the patient and transferring it to the articulator. BDIMPRESS is a new thermoplastic material that has been proposed as a potential material to be used as an inter-occlusal registration, but there has been no literature evidence regarding its application as a bite registration. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the dimensional stability, detail reproduction, and compressive resistance of new interocclusal recording material with other two commonly used materials. In Vitro Comparative study. The study was conducted according to ADA Specification standards of testing for dimensional stability, detail reproduction and compressive resistance. Specimens were prepared for three different materials (Thermoplastic resin, Polyvinyl siloxane, and Bis- acrylic) with 12 samples each. One way ANOVA was done for statistical analysis. Polyvinyl siloxane material was dimensionally stable (mean at 1 hr: 24.928 mm; 24 hrs: 24.919 mm & 48 hrs: 24.912 mm) followed by Bis- acrylic material (mean at 1 hr: 24.851 mm; 24 hrs: 24.825 mm & 48 hrs: 24.815 mm). On one way ANOVA, strong significance was observed between groups (P = 0.00). Thermoplastic resin showed higher amount of detail reproduction with 10 (out of 12 samples) samples showing satisfactory results. While bis- acrylic material showed the least compressive resistance (Strain %: 0.484%; Displacement- 0.0990mm). One-way ANOVA showed presence of significance between the groups (P = 0.024). Polyvinyl siloxane showed superior dimensional stability, thermoplastic resin showed better detail reproduction and bis- acrylic showed high resistance to compression over other materials.

Comparative evaluation of tear resistance of two rubber base bite registration pastes: An in-vitro study

Introduction: Any alteration in the interocclusal recording material before mounting the cast on the articulator would lead to change in maxillomandibular relationship, causing improper restoration with defective occlusal contacts. For an accurate replication, the interocclusal recording material must not deform or tear while being removed from oral cavity. Among various interocclusal record materials available, two recently introduced elastomeric bite registration pastes namely polyether and addition silicone are gaining popularity. Aims and Objectives: Since no much study are available regarding the tear resistance of bite registration materials, the present study was conducted to evaluate and compare the tear strength of polyether and addition silicone bite registration pastes. Materials and Method: Twenty specimens each of polyether and addition silicone bite registration pastes were made using metallic die according to dimensions as in ASTN D624 Type C mould. Tear resistance of both the materials were measured using Shimadzu Autograph Universal testing machine. The values obtained were tabulated and analysed statistically. Results and Conclusion: The mean tear resistance for polyether was 4.4456 N/mm and that for addition silicone bite registration pastes was 3.4943 N/mm. The tear resistance of polyether bite registration paste is significantly higher than the tear resistance of addition silicone bite registration paste. As the p value obtained was 0.000 (p value < 0.05) the result obtained is statistically significant.

Evaluation of Dimensional Stability and Surface Hardness of Interocclusal Recording Materials at Various Time Intervals: An in vitro Study.

Aim:At different timings, assessment and comparison of the dimensional stability and surface hardness of three interocclusal recording materials (IRM).Materials and Methods:Samples of polyvinyl siloxane, ZOE, and bite registration wax were made using stainless steel die. Each group had 10 samples. At 1, 8, 24, and 48 h, the samples were estimated using a 10× amplification stereo microscope.Results:Four readings were taken for each sample, the mean was considered to scale the dimensional change and surface hardness. At 1, 8, 24, and 48 h mean dimensional change was viewed as the most extreme among group 3 followed by group 2 and afterward group 1 (P < 0.05).Conclusion:Polyvinyl siloxane was the steadiest, most precise, and had the most noteworthy surface hardness among the three interocclusal materials.

Variability of dimensional stability of different interocclusal recording materials according to time: A comparative in vitro study

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess variability of dimensional stability of different interocclusal recording materials according to time in a comparative in vitro study. Materials and Methods: This was an experimental in vitro study. The sample was made up of n = 80 intermaxillary records. To record dimensional stability, it used a high-precision device manufactured according to specification No.19 of the American Dental Association. Measurement of discrepancies was recorded with a precision digital caliper (0.01 mm). The intermaxillary recording materials were placed inside the metal device as follows: The silicone by addition was injected using a system of cartridges and special mixing tips and Godiva was immersed in hot water (40–45°C) for 5 min to soften them. Inferential statistical analysis was performed with ANOVA and Bonferroni test, with a level of statistical significance of P < 0.05. Results: Aluwax and Godiva wax presented linear dimensional changes from the time the intermaxillary record was taken and increased with storage time. Occlufast silicone remained stable for up to 7 days (0.120 ± 0.015) mm, while Futar D silicone was stable for up to 22 days (–0.028 ± 0.009) mm. Conclusion: Silicones and polyvinyl siloxanes presented greater dimensional stability than the godiva and Aluwax (Futar D silicone being more stable than the Occlufast silicone). Finally, Godiva presented greater dimensional stability than the Aluwax because it presented the greatest dimensional variation over time with respect to the other materials.

Comparative evaluation of condylar guidance obtained by three different interocclusal recording materials in a semi-adjustable articulator and digital panoramic radiographic images in dentate patients: An in vivo study.

Aim:The Aim of the study was to evaluate the reproducibility of condylar inclination values obtained using three different interocclusal recording materials in Hanau Wide-Vue semi-adjustable articulator and to compare those values of condylar inclination with panoramic radiographic images.Settings and Design:In Vivo Comparative study.Materials and Methods:The clinical trial was carried out in the Department of Prosthodontics, M. R Ambedkar Dental College and Hospital, Bengaluru. A total of 30 dentulous subjects aged between 20 and 40 years were selected, without any signs and symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders. With the help of a custom-made protrusive guide, protrusive records for three materials were made. These records were used for programming the articulator and the respective horizontal condylar inclination (HCI) value, and panoramic radiographs were made. The values obtained were statistically analyzed.Statistical Analysis Used:Independent t-test, multiple comparisons using Bonferroni method followed by Analysis of variances (ANOVA) were used.Results:Among each pair of groups there exists a significant difference, i.e., the mean condylar inclination (degree) was found to be statistically significant between wax and polyvinyl siloxane (P < 0.01) as well as between wax and polyether (P < 0.01). No significant difference was observed between polyvinyl siloxane and polyether (P > 0.05).Conclusion:HCI values differed depending on the type of material employed. The study concluded that the protrusive condylar guidance angles obtained by panoramic radiograph can be used in programming the semi-adjustable articulator and among the materials polyether gave the highest Condylar Guidance values with less variability and wax gave lowest values with greater variation.

Data on dental bite materials with stability and displacement under load.

It is of interest to document the accuracy, time dependent dimensional stability and displacement to load for 5 types of inter-occlusal recording materials. We used cad bite paste, putty, lab putty, pattern resin and poly tray acrylic material in this study. A total of 25 samples were fabricated to evaluate the accuracy and dimensional stability. The amount of displacement was calculated by applying displacing force on the bite registration materials till they fractured using Instron 3000 UTS machine. Statistical analysis of the data shows that CAD bite paste has the maximum amount of accuracy and dimensional stability whereas pattern resin showed the least amount of displacement to applied force. Thus, we report that CAD bite registration material displayed best results in terms of accuracy and dimensional stability and moderate results in terms of displacement to force.

Interocclusal recording materials and techniques: A literature review

Precise articulation of casts obtained from the patient is essential for proper diagnosis, treatment planning and successive prosthetic rehabilitation. In addition accurate transfer of maxillomandibular relation to the articulator eliminates the need for occlusal adjustments in final prosthesis, which require additional time and cost. Thus, it is essential to record this relationship with the least possible error to obtain a successful prosthesis. Knowledgeable application of the properties and the various shortcomings of the interocclusal recording mediums and the techniques used to record the relationship is crucial, while selecting ideal material- technique combination.

A comparative evaluation of three dimensional accuracy of different types of interocclusal recording materials - an in vitro study.

IntroductionThe interocclusal registration materials record the occlusal relationship between the natural and /or artificial teeth for planning an occlusal rehabilitation in removable and fixed partial dentures.Aim and objectivesThe aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate and compare the accuracy and the three dimensional stability offered by three different types of interocclusal recording materials at storage time intervals of 1 hour and 24 hours.MethodsThree commercially available interocclusal recording materials were used: Group I-Polyether bite registration paste (Ramitec), Group II-Polyvinylsiloxane bite registration material (Imprint), Group III-Bite registration wax (Maarc). The test was carried out using an epoxy resin model. A total of 30 samples were made with each group consisting of ten samples. Three dimensional measurements were carried out by using 3D-Coordinate measuring machine (CMM) at time intervals of 0–1 hour and 0–24 hours in X, Y and Z-axis.ResultsTwelve readings were obtained for three axes (4 readings for each sample at 1 axis) and the averages of these four values were noted for a particular axis (X/Y/Z). Statistical analysis was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) for comparison among the groups and then Tukey’s honestly significant difference (HSD) tests was performed for comparison among groups at the 0.05 level of significance.ConclusionPolyvinylsiloxane was dimensionally the most stable material followed by polyether and finally bite registration wax. Dimensional accuracy and stability is influenced by both “material” and “time” factors.
