Furthermore, we prioritize the use of lightweight cryptographic techniques, including Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC), to optimize performance without compromising security. Through comprehensive evaluation and benchmarking, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed solution in bolstering the security and efficiency of IoT ecosystems. This contribution underlines the critical need for innovative security solutions in IoT deployments and presents a scalable framework to meet the evolving demands of IoT environments.

Application of IoT technology for enhancing the consumer willingness to return E-waste for achieving circular economy: A Lagrangian relaxation approach

Poor management of waste electronic and electrical equipment (e-waste) has resulted in serious challenges to the environment and, consequently, to living organisms. Increasing consumer willingness to return household e-waste is a practical solution for better e-waste management. In this paper, for the first time, a circular supply chain network is structured by applying internet of things (IoT) technology to increase consumer willingness to return household e-waste and to manage the network more effectively. For this purpose, we formulate a mixed-integer linear programming model whose objective is to minimize strategic costs (setup costs and IoT deployment costs) and operational costs (transportation costs, costs associated with IoT, and processing costs in centers), simultaneously. In addition, we developed a heuristic algorithm based on Lagrangian relaxation to solve the proposed MILP model. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by comparing its results with GAMS results using eight small-sized simulated problems. Furthermore, eight large-size problems are simulated and solved by the proposed algorithm. Finally, the data of an Iranian knowledge-based company is employed to validate the presented mathematical model and algorithm, and the sensitivity analysis process is used to examine the accuracy of the obtained results.

Provably secure optimal homomorphic signcryption for satellite-based internet of things

Satellites have long been reliable and widely used mediums for communication. With recent advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT), satellite-based IoT has emerged, enhancing global connectivity by enabling real-time communication between remote sensing devices and central hubs through satellite links. However, secure and authenticated communication between Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites and resource-constrained ground devices remains underexplored. This paper introduces a novel homomorphic signcryption scheme designed for satellite IoT environments. Our scheme employs hyperelliptic curve cryptography and homomorphic encryption to facilitate the privacy-preserving transmission of aggregated data from multiple IoT devices to LEO satellites. We benchmark our homomorphic signcryption scheme against several established schemes tailored for different network environments, including for satellite networks, Identity-based Signcryption for Smart Grids, 3-Factor Authentication schemes and heterogeneous Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) encryption schemes. Our scheme demonstrates substantial improvements in computational efficiency, communication overhead, and storage capacity. It reduces computational costs by 90% to 99%, communication overhead by 41% to 92%, and storage demands by 62% to 93% compared to existing methods. These quantitative findings demonstrate the practical viability of our approach for satellite IoT deployments with limited resources. Additionally, the robustness of our approach is confirmed through formal security validation using BAN Logic and Scyther, which verifies its strong security, optimal performance, and privacy preservation capabilities, making it ideally suited for real-world satellite IoT systems.

Forecasting the probability of successful deployment of internet of things and cloud computing in the building sector through consistent fuzzy preference relations method

Purpose This study aims to identify significant factors, analyse them using the consistent fuzzy preference relations (CFPR) method and forecast the probability of successful deployment of the internet of things (IoT) and cloud computing (CC) in Gujarat, India’s building sector. Design/methodology/approach From the previous studies, 25 significant factors were identified, and a questionnaire survey with personal interviews obtained 120 responses from building experts in Gujarat, India. The questionnaire survey data’s validity, reliability and descriptive statistics were also assessed. Building experts’ opinions are inputted into the CFPR method, and priority weights and ratings for probable outcomes are obtained to forecast success and failure. Findings The findings demonstrate that the most important factors are affordable system and ease of use and battery life and size of sensors, whereas less important ones include poor collaboration between IoT and cloud developer community and building sector and suitable location. The forecasting values demonstrate that the factor suitable location has a high probability of success; however, factors such as loss of jobs and data governance have a high probability of failure. Based on the forecasted values, the probability of success (0.6420) is almost twice that of failure (0.3580). It shows that deploying IoT and CC in the building sector of Gujarat, India, is very much feasible. Originality/value Previous studies analysed IoT and CC factors using different multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods to merely prioritise ranking in the building sector, but forecasting success/failure makes this study unique. This research is generally applicable, and its findings may be utilised for decision-making and deployment of IoT and CC in the building sector anywhere globally.

Advancing into Millimeter Wavelengths for IoT: Multibeam Modified Planar Luneburg Lens Antenna with Porous Plastic Material

This paper introduces an innovative antenna design utilizing a cylindrical dielectric Luneburg lens tailored for 60 GHz Internet of Things (IoT) applications. To optimize V-band communications, the permittivity of the dielectric medium is strategically adjusted by precisely manipulating the physical porosity. In IoT scenarios, employing a microstrip dipole antenna with an emission pattern resembling cos10 enhances beam illumination within the waveguide, thereby improving communication and sensing capabilities. The refractive index gradient of the Luneburg lens is modified by manipulating the material’s porosity using air holes, prioritizing signal accuracy and reliability. Fabricated with polyimide using 3D printing, the proposed antenna features a slim profile ideal for IoT applications with space constraints, such as smart homes and unmanned aerial vehicles. Its innovative design is underscored by selective laser sintering (SLS), offering scalable and cost-effective production. Measured results demonstrate the antenna’s exceptional performance, surpassing IoT deployment standards. This pioneering approach to designing multibeam Luneburg lens antennas, leveraging 3D printing’s porosity control for millimeter-wave applications, represents a significant advancement in antenna technology with scanning ability between −67 and 67 degrees. It paves the way for enhanced IoT infrastructure characterized by advanced sensing capabilities and improved connectivity.

Security intrusion monitoring model for Internet of Things (IoT) using sniffing tools on wireless sensor networks

The Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized the way devices interact and share data over wireless sensor networks (WSN), enabling seamless connectivity and automation. However, the proliferation of IoT devices has raised serious security and privacy risks concerns due to their inherent vulnerabilities. This paper proposes a model for security intrusion monitoring by analyzing the existing literature and providing insights into the design, implementation, and effective deployment of the proposed model to detect intrusion in IoT using sniffing tools for network traffic analysis in real-time within WSN. The model passively monitors network traffic and identifies anomalous patterns, unauthorized access attempts, and abnormal device behavior. The review findings highlight the significance of the proposed model in enhancing the security of IoT systems. By detecting anomalous behavior and potential security breaches. The model enables timely response and mitigation actions to ensure the confidentiality, integrity and availability (CIA) of IoT devices data. The model includes consideration of network architecture, deployment of intrusion detection algorithms, and establishment of response mechanisms. It identifies various types of security threats, such as unauthorized access attempts, Denial-of-service, Distributed DoS, Brute-force, Heartbleed, Botnet, Inside Infiltration and device tampering, thereby providing response mechanisms that include generating alerts, isolating compromised devices, or blocking suspicious network traffic. The model incorporates a feedback loop to continuously update the detection mechanisms and adapt to evolving security threats in real-time. Series of experiments and simulations to be conducted using various IoT devices and network scenarios to evaluate model effectiveness. The model to comprise of wireless Router, MatLab for Deep Neural Network (DNN) training, Raspberry Pi, Wireshark setup and an array of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The researcher to use dataset by extracting intrinsic, host-based and time-based attributes from Wireshark Sniffing tool. The datasets generated shall be piped by tshark to an output text file saved as a csv. Under-sampling technique to be used to address class imbalance of datasets. The model shall then be trained using the dataset to be able to detect intrusion in IoTs. The results is expected to demonstrate the model's ability to detect a wide range of security intrusions with high accuracy and minimal false positives. In conclusion, the model offers a proactive approach to safeguard IoT deployment. By leveraging sniffing tools and advanced analysis techniques, the model enhances the detection and response capabilities, enabling efficient protection against emerging threats in IoT. However, challenges associated with the model are identified, including the complexity of network monitoring and potential privacy concerns.

Lightweight blockchain-based remote user authentication for fog-enabled IoT deployment

The Internet of Things (IoT) seeks to enhance human life by embedding everyday objects with intelligence. As deployed in diverse environments, IoT devices exchange substantial data to offer autonomously smart and innovative services. Cloud computing serves as an effective solution for processing and storing data from IoT devices, enabling remote access for end-users. However, authenticating remote users poses a critical challenge. Although several existing schemes tackle this challenge, they have notable security and performance weaknesses. This paper introduces a lightweight, distributed multi-factor authentication scheme for remote users in IoT. The proposed approach, named Lightchain, integrates blockchain technology and fog computing while incorporating a lightweight cryptographic hash function. The security of Lightchain is rigorously confirmed through formal verification using the well-recognized Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications (AVISPA) tool. Additionally, we develop and assess Lightchain’s functionality using the solidity language across diverse use cases. A comparative analysis is presented to evaluate performance costs and security requirements against recent methods. The proposed scheme demonstrates efficiency and robustness, making it well-suited for a range of IoT applications.

Voronoi diagrams and tree structures in HRP-EE: Enhancing IoT network lifespan with WSNs

Within the domain of the Internet of Things (IoT), wireless sensor networks (WSNs) play a pivotal role, facilitating advancements in sectors such as smart urban infrastructures, intelligent healthcare systems, and residential automation. Despite their versatility, WSNs grapple with challenges like limited energy reserves and constrained computational capacities, making energy conservation a paramount concern for IoT deployments underpinned by WSNs. This study introduces the Hybrid Routing Protocol for Efficient Energy (HRP-EE) designed to enhance the operational efficiency of WSNs. The HRP-EE protocol unfolds over three meticulous stages: the selection of cluster heads, the formation of clusters, and the establishment of routing pathways. Initially, the protocol evaluates nodes based on their residual energy and their Euclidean distance to the central sink (or gateway) device to designate apt cluster heads. Subsequently, these chosen cluster heads are integrated into the Voronoi diagram as central nodes to orchestrate cluster architectures. In the terminal stage, an innovative hybrid algorithm is instituted. This algorithm amalgamates the principles of the Minimum Spanning Tree for structuring intra-cluster communication trees and Dijkstra’s algorithm to ascertain the most efficient paths for inter-cluster data transmission from cluster heads to the sink device. The primary objective of this protocol is the judicious utilization of the sensor nodes’ energy, thereby optimizing the overall network longevity. To assess the proficiency of HRP-EE, we executed a series of simulations using NS2. Comparative analyses reveal that HRP-EE outperforms existing protocols such as LEACH-VA, PEGCP, and TBC, delivering superior energy efficiency, extended network lifespan, and enhanced throughput across both homogeneous and heterogeneous network architectures.

Anomaly Detection of IoT Cyberattacks in Smart Cities Using Federated Learning and Split Learning

The swift proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices in smart city infrastructures has created an urgent demand for robust cybersecurity measures. These devices are susceptible to various cyberattacks that can jeopardize the security and functionality of urban systems. This research presents an innovative approach to identifying anomalies caused by IoT cyberattacks in smart cities. The proposed method harnesses federated and split learning and addresses the dual challenge of enhancing IoT network security while preserving data privacy. This study conducts extensive experiments using authentic datasets from smart cities. To compare the performance of classical machine learning algorithms and deep learning models for detecting anomalies, model effectiveness is assessed using precision, recall, F-1 score, accuracy, and training/deployment time. The findings demonstrate that federated learning and split learning have the potential to balance data privacy concerns with competitive performance, providing robust solutions for detecting IoT cyberattacks. This study contributes to the ongoing discussion about securing IoT deployments in urban settings. It lays the groundwork for scalable and privacy-conscious cybersecurity strategies. Hybrid chips to enable a sustainable internet of things technology: opportunities and challenges

AbstractA new technological approach is needed for the development of emerging electronic components and systems within the Internet of Things (IoT) era. New advancements and innovations are required in architectural design and hybrid systems heterogeneous integration to address the challenge of widespread IoT deployment, its power demands and sustainability. Hybrid chips are one of the emerging technologies that can help overcome the current limitations in terms of energy consumption, performance and sustainability that could shape the future of electronic systems for targeted applications. Hybrid chips combine different materials and manufacturing technologies on the same substrate or package using advanced flexible heterogeneous integration techniques, with the focus of merging the advantages of each unit or technology toward enhanced performance and new levels of emerging functionalities. The categorization of hybrid chips spans across rigid hybrid chips that follow a multi-chiplet approach, semi-flexible chips that integrate flexible units with semi-rigid ones such as thinned silicon integrated circuits, and lastly, flexible chips in which all components are inherently flexible. This perspective article analyzes technical challenges that arise concerning the development of sustainable materials and processing technologies, complex heterogeneous integration, as well as advanced packaging architectures, standardization, and reliability testing. The economic implications for the semiconductor technology transition to hybrid chips is presented in terms of manufacturing costs, economic feasibility, and market readiness. Key insights and future application opportunities are provided, while recent advancements in the field are summarized. This perspective article suggests that by addressing these challenges, hybrid chips have the potential to transform electronic components and systems across a wide range of industries and use case scenario. The advancement of hybrid chip technologies by enhancing the collaboration between industry and academia as well as policymakers will be a crucial part in the realization of required sustainability goals within the worldwide Chips Act initiative, while ensuring the technological progress has the right balance between improved performance and sustainability.

Assessing Malaysia’s Internet of Things (IoT) Readiness Based On CREATE-IoT Key Performance Indicators

The current nationwide deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) in Malaysia has never been assessed nor benchmarked against any Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). A proven IoT assessment standard called CREATE-IoT has successfully driven IoT projects in European countries, and it is hence used as a benchmarking tool in this research. The assessment that includes both technical and business perspectives concludes that 42 out of 50 KPIs (84%) in Malaysia are in the advanced state. Malaysia is thus rated as an IoT-ready country. However, rooms for improvement exist in the scopes of providing expected duration for completing an IoT service transaction to predict the level of customer satisfaction when using the service – and the ability to produce IoT sensors and devices locally to have sustainable, scalable, and economical continuous IoT deployments.

Enhancing service availability and resource deployment in IoT using a shared service replication method

In many real-world contexts, the Internet of Things (IoT) is valued for its capacity to facilitate the smooth operation of interoperable applications and services. It is critical to ensure the accessibility and replication of IoT resources to improve the agility of these applications. As a solution, the Network Function Virtualization (NFV) paradigm is embedded into the IoT design to leverage information from various endpoint applications better and maximize resource utilization. In this study, the Shared Replication Augmenting Method (SRAM) is proposed to increase resource usage in underutilized NFVs and maintain service availability simultaneously. The regressive decision-making learning used by SRAM enables the detection of NFV needs for data and application portability across various real-time use cases. This regression method can uncover data needs and their causes, allowing for prompt answers and more efficient use of available resources. The suggested SRAM technique dynamically modifies the procedure while considering computation-less function allocations, making it suitable for various interoperable applications. It distributes root-to-service virtualization and availability based on historical use and data replication. Therefore, SRAM improves resource usage by 7.09 % with no increase in latency or delays. It also increases service availability by 10.4 %, reduces latency by 11.89 %, eliminates backlogs by 11.1 %, and reduces data repetition by 8.97 %. This study enhances resource consumption and productivity in IoT settings by offering SRAM as a viable solution. The study's results prove its potential to reduce the occurrence of replication, delay, and queues while raising the availability of services.

Artificial Intelligence Driven Power Optimization in IOT-Enabled Wireless Sensor Networks

The widespread use of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) in Internet of Things (IoT) causes energy efficiency issues. This paper proposes an AI-based solution to this problem. The propose an AI-Driven Power Optimization framework for IoT-enabled WSN using Deep Q-Network (DQN) and Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS). These techniques can adapt to changing network conditions and reduce power consumption when used together. Sensor nodes provide environmental parameters, battery status, and network behavior data to the AI-driven framework DQN is implemented after data preprocessing to learn and make power management decisions using reinforcement learning. Neural network-driven agent operates in a state and action space. It optimizes energy use with rewards. Real-time hardware power adjustment is done using DVFS. DVFS precise control and AI-driven decision-making create a comprehensive power optimization strategy. AI adapts to new challenges and optimizes network lifespan by improving its power management policies. Experimental implementations of the proposed framework show significant energy savings, network lifespan extension, and QoS improvements. AI-Driven Power Optimization in IoT-enabled WSN is proven effective and flexible. This study shows the potential of AI, specifically DQN and DVFS, in IoT-enabled WSN. This AI-Driven Power Optimization framework addresses energy efficiency and improves IoT sensor networks. AI improves power optimization in IoT-enabled WSN making IoT deployments more sustainable and resilient.
