Lightweight Privacy Preserving Scheme for IoT based Smart Home

Background: The Internet of Things (IoT) is the interconnection of physical devices, controllers, sensors and actuators that monitor and share data to another end. In a smart home network, users can remotely access and control home appliances/devices via wireless channels. Due to the increasing demand for smart IoT devices, secure communication also becomes the biggest challenge. Hence, a lightweight authentication scheme is required to secure these devices and maintain user privacy. The protocol proposed is secure against different kinds of attacks and as well as is efficient. Methods: The proposed protocol offers mutual authentication using shared session key establishment. The shared session key is established between the smart device and the home gateway, ensuring that the communication between the smart devices, home gateway, and the user is secure and no third party can access the information shared. Results: Informal and formal analysis of the proposed scheme is done using the AVISPA tool. Finally, the results of the proposed scheme also compare with existing security schemes in terms of computation and communication performance cost. The results show that the proposed scheme is more efficient and robust against different types of attacks than the existing protocols. Conclusion: In the upcoming years, there will be a dedicated network system built inside the home so that the user can have access to the home from anywhere. The proposed scheme offers secure communication between the user, the smart home, and different smart devices. The proposed protocol makes sure that security and privacy are maintained since the smart devices lack computation power which makes them vulnerable to different attacks.

IoT based smart home automation using blockchain and deep learning models.

For the past few years, the concept of the smart house has gained popularity. The major challenges concerning a smart home include data security, privacy issues, authentication, secure identification, and automated decision-making of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Currently, existing home automation systems address either of these challenges, however, home automation that also involves automated decision-making systems and systematic features apart from being reliable and safe is an absolute necessity. The current study proposes a deep learning-driven smart home system that integrates a Convolutional neural network (CNN) for automated decision-making such as classifying the device as "ON" and "OFF" based on its utilization at home. Additionally, to provide a decentralized, secure, and reliable mechanism to assure the authentication and identification of the IoT devices we integrated the emerging blockchain technology into this study. The proposed system is fundamentally comprised of a variety of sensors, a 5 V relay circuit, and Raspberry Pi which operates as a server and maintains the database of each device being used. Moreover, an android application is developed which communicates with the Raspberry Pi interface using the Apache server and HTTP web interface. The practicality of the proposed system for home automation is tested and evaluated in the lab and in real-time to ensure its efficacy. The current study also assures that the technology and hardware utilized in the proposed smart house system are inexpensive, widely available, and scalable. Furthermore, the need for a more comprehensive security and privacy model to be incorporated into the design phase of smart homes is highlighted by a discussion of the risks analysis' implications including cyber threats, hardware security, and cyber attacks. The experimental results emphasize the significance of the proposed system and validate its usability in the real world.

Design and Implementation RESTful API for IoT Based Smart Home Systems

The development of digital technology has created the Internet of Things (IoT), which consists of sensors and actuators embedded in physical objects, such as the concept of a smart home monitoring system. A smart home allows users to control and monitor electrical appliances automatically. In a home automation system, there are four main components: the user interface, transmission mode, hardware interface, and various electronic devices connected to the central control system. This research implements a smart home prototype using ESP32 as the controller and an API as the communication interface. The goal is to create an energy-efficient smart home system with device access and control through a website using internet connectivity. The methodology used involves analyzing existing problems, designing both software and hardware components, and finally implementing the design stages into the actual device and website. Based on the conducted research, the prototype has been successfully implemented with an API on the website.

These devices continuously monitor all the vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation.

A survey on communication components for IoT-based technologies in smart homes

The new and disruptive Internet of Things (IoT)-based technologies being used in smart homes have significantly bounded and dispersed communication components. To examine these technologies and provide researchers with a clear vision toward this area, we must be aware of the utilized approaches and the existing limitations in this line of research. To this end, an extensive search was conducted for articles dealing with (a) smart homes, (b) IoT, and (c) related applications were comprehensively reviewed and a coherent taxonomy for these articles was established. ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, and Web of Science databases were checked for articles on IoT-based smart home technologies. The retrieved articles were then filtered based on specified criteria “Communication components aspects”, and 82 articles were eventually selected and classified into four categories. The first category included articles that representing internet devices in a framework or model that follows the requirements of the stage in which any system is developed, the second category included analytical studies that monitor the possible changes in the variables used in a specific case study, the third category included evaluation, comparative studies, and assessing their worth or merit, and the fourth category included reviews and surveys a review and survey of the communication components of IoT-based smart home technologies. The motivation for using IoT-based technologies in smart homes, the issues related to application obstruction, and the development and utilization of smart homes are then examined based on the findings from the literature. With the exception of the 82 articles reviewed earlier, the telecommunication standards and concepts of this research were covering IoT solutions, communication protocols, IoT stack protocol, and quality of service for IoT based smart home technologies.

User Activity Recognition in Smart Homes Using Pattern Clustering Applied to Temporal ANN Algorithm.

This paper discusses the possibility of recognizing and predicting user activities in the IoT (Internet of Things) based smart environment. The activity recognition is usually done through two steps: activity pattern clustering and activity type decision. Although many related works have been suggested, they had some limited performance because they focused only on one part between the two steps. This paper tries to find the best combination of a pattern clustering method and an activity decision algorithm among various existing works. For the first step, in order to classify so varied and complex user activities, we use a relevant and efficient unsupervised learning method called the K-pattern clustering algorithm. In the second step, the training of smart environment for recognizing and predicting user activities inside his/her personal space is done by utilizing the artificial neural network based on the Allen’s temporal relations. The experimental results show that our combined method provides the higher recognition accuracy for various activities, as compared with other data mining classification algorithms. Furthermore, it is more appropriate for a dynamic environment like an IoT based smart home.
