The school library is a facility and pre-facility to support teaching and learning activities at the school level because the school library is an integral part of the education program at the school level. The school library is designed to meet the information needs of the community in every school environment, especially teachers and students. In the school library there are various collections that must be processed so that they are easy to use by library visitors or users. The things that can be done by librarian is cataloging library materials or collections to facilitate the process of retrieval of information needed by users. Therefore, this study uses descriptive qualitative research methods, in order to be able to describe how the cataloging in the library of SMA N 1 Payakumbuh. From the data and research results, it is known that the activity of cataloging or cataloging has followed and is in accordance with the cataloging system guided by the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD). In the process of cataloging collections or library materials using SLiMS is an convenience for librarians in data management so that it affects the services provided to library visitors or users.

IFLA supports bibliographic studies

The author reviews the activity of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) in the area of bibliography and bibliographic studies since the second half of 20th century. IFLA bibliography-oriented divisions with the account to the recent structural changes are named. The changes are approved at 2021 World Library and Information Congress. The key projects in blbliography and cataloguing are discussed: Universal Bibliographic Control (UBC), UNISIST (United Nations International Scientific Information System); National Information Systems; International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD). The current technological projects, e. g. FRBR, FRAD, FRSAD, FRBRoo, PRESSoo, IFLA LRM, are to regulate and standardize requirements to bibliographic records to support multiaspect information retrieval. The author argues that IFLA has transformed its bibliographic activities from large-scale global projects intended to embrace various types of documents and to unify bibliographic records toward narrower technological projects oriented toward disclosing data on format and contents of documents and efficient utilization of bibliographic information. The author emphaszes that IFLA is now focusing on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals agenda and 2030 Culture Coalition.The author based her article on the paper delivered at the Third World Bibliographic Congress (Novosibirsk, 27–29 April, 2021).

According to the simplest and most common definition, metadata refers to a set of data that describes other data. Research on metadata is focused almost exclusively on solving practical issues. There are few theories on metadata that emphasise the lack of a common theoretical foundation to handle metadata, and there is also a lack of corresponding research. This article looks at metadata from a broad perspective of information technology and seeks an answer to a question that may, at first glance, seem simple: what is the origin of metadata? The article aims to present a conceptual model that connects metadata to communication processes, thereby creating an opportunity to treat metadata in a more systematic manner.
 In memory institutions, different metadata schemes and standards are used to describe digital objects. In order to describe objects, libraries use bibliographical entries that correspond to valid entry and cataloguing rules. Objects are described by bibliographic entries and catalogued in a bibliographic format. Nowadays, cataloguing rules are mostly based on the ISBD (International Standard Bibliographic Description). The most common bibliographic formats are standards belonging to the MARC (Machine Readable Cataloguing) group. Some libraries, such as the Academic Library of Tallinn University and the University of Tartu Library use the Dublin Core metadata standard to describe the digital objects they preserve. A particular feature of the metadata systems used by libraries is that all objects in a collection are described to at least a minimum level. Archives in Estonia use the General International Standard Archival Description (ISAD(G)), which was developed by the International Council on Archives. Archives differ from libraries in that archives usually describe objects in detail on the levels of archive, series, and archive item, and preservation of the full context of information is prioritised. Estonian museums began introducing common structured metadata in 1992, when the Ministry of Culture commissioned a software company called AS GenNet Laboratories to develop KVIS (Information System of Cultural Values). The development of KVIS was based on the CIDOC (International Committee for Documentation) data model of the International Council of Museums, and on SWETERM, the Swedish standard of forming name attributes. This was an object-oriented data model, and the description was focused not on the object but the event. This type of description model is also supported by the CRM (Conceptual Reference Model) adopted by CIDOC in 2006. In 2005, the Ministry of Culture decided to create MuIS, a new information system for museums, although this new system was based on the same underlying data model as the previous system. The descriptions of museum objects are supported by central glossaries that ensure museum items are described as required and that searches can be made across museums. To describe natural scientific collections, other information systems are also used, such as the SARV database, used for managing data related to geocollections. Archaeological collections have their own databases as well, with specific metadata. The digital collection of the Art Museum of Estonia uses a bespoke system of metadata.
 Metadata are connected to each of the elements in the communication process: metadata are the attributes describing these elements. Each element of a communication act is characterised by specific, fixed attributes that provide full information about the act. All the attributes of the set of elements pertaining to a specific communication act make up the full meta description of this communication act. In fact, a communication act can be characterised by various attributes. The selection of metadata attributes used to characterise a communication process is connected to the function of the metadata relevant for the particular case.

Behcet's disease concurrent with axial spondyloarthritis: the authors' own observations

Objective : to present cases of Behcet's disease (BD) concurrent with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). Subjects and methods . A total of 470 patients with BD who met the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) criteria were examined at the V.A. Nasonova Research Institute of Rheumatology in the period from 1990 to 2018. In 9 of them, BD was concurrent with axSpA; 7 out of the 9 patients met the 1984 modified New York criteria for ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and two patients fulfilled the 2009 ASAS non-radiographic axSpA criteria. Results and discussion . Most (55.6%) patients were men. BD was preceded by axSpA in 6 patients. The symptoms of AS joined an average of 8.4 [2; 10] years after the onset of the clinical manifestations of BD. Three patients developed BB 9–15 years after the onset of the first symptoms of axSpA. The mean duration of BD was 14.0±7.8 years and that of axSpA was 10.9±6.2 years. All the patients were HLA-B27-positive; three were found to have B5 antigen. All the 9 patients had mucocutaneous manifestations that were characteristic of BD. Four patients were diagnosed as having eye injuries: generalized uveitis with retinal vasculitis, posterior uveitis with or without retinal vasculitis. Gastrointestinal tract lesions were detected in 44.4% of cases. Peripheral arthritis was present in all the patients. Entheseal involvement was observed in 66.7% of patients. The radiographic signs of bilateral sacroiliitis according to the modified New York criteria were found in 7 (77.8%) patients; MRI revealed active inflammatory changes in the area of the sacroiliac joint in 3 (33.3%) patients. Conclusion . The fact that there may be an overlap between BD and axSpA should be taken into account in everyday clinical practice, which will assist in choosing the optimal treatment strategy.

Social Cataloguing Sites: Features and Comparison in Relation to ISBD

In the past few years, the number of social site related applications has increased; and also, these are playing an important role in the collection and sharing of knowledge. These types of application give users the freedom to create vocabulary, which helps to describe and categorize online resources. The social cataloguing applications are a type of web application that helps users to catalogue various items. These social cataloguing sites help users to catalogue their personal book collections, and make the collection known to all users with similar tastes. This study analyzed and evaluated the bibliographic and social features of some selected popular social cataloguing sites and also compared with the data elements prescribed in the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD).

DCRM(B) is based on AACR2, which is organized according to International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) areas. RDA is based on FRBR. As of this writing, the RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee intends to finish an initial version of RBMS Policy Statements for the RDA Toolkit. This paper discusses the creation process of three catalog records for the same rare book developed according to DCRM(B), the PCC-RDA-BSR with rare materials provisions, and RDA with exceptions for early printed resources.

DCRM(B) is based on AACR2, which is organized according to International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) areas. RDA is based on FRBR. As of this writing, the RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee intends to finish an initial version of RBMS Policy Statements for the RDA Toolkit. During the interim, the Bibliographic Standards Committee website states: “The Bibliographic Standards Committee is neutral regarding RDA, neither encouraging nor discouraging agencies regarding implementation of RDA-acceptable DCRM records.” The Committee provides rare book catalogers with two options. The first instructs catalogers to form descriptive portions of records according to DCRM(B) and AACR2, using RDA for access points. The second option directs catalogers to create RDA records using the PCC-RDA BIBCO Standard Record (BSR) that includes rare materials provisions. This paper discusses the creation process of three catalog records for the same rare book developed according to DCRM(B), the PCC-RDA-BSR with rare materials provisions and RDA with exceptions for early printed resources.

A Conversation with Sally McCallum

In this conversation, conducted during the IFLA conference in Wrocław, Poland in August 2017, Sally McCallum retells her beginnings at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. when she worked with Henriette Avram and Lucia Rather on the development of the MARC and UNIMARC formats. Other topics include conversion between MARC and UNIMARC, MARC21 and BIBFRAME projects, and her views on: RDA (Resource Description and Access); ISBD (International Standard Bibliographic Description); IFLA LRM (IFLA Library Reference Model); and UBC (Universal Bibliographic Control) in the face of technological changes.

Enhancing OPAC Records: Evaluating and Fitting Within Cataloguing Standards a New Proposal of Description Parameters for Historical Astronomical Resources

Enhancing content description of specialized resources, particularly astronomical resources, is a matter that is still unresolved in library and information science. In this paper, the authors outline deficiencies in some fields and elements of cataloging standards for description of historical astronomical resources, mainly star atlases and catalogs. Furthermore, they review their recent proposal of astronomical parameters for a better description and propose an approach for accommodating these parameters in the current criteria of MARC 21, the International Standard Bibliographic Description, and Resource Description and Access. Fourteen new parameters are considered, and recommendations are provided to standards developers for the addition of elements to accommodate attributes of celestial cartographic resources. This would improve bibliographic records for such resources in astronomical libraries’ OPACs, which will have a beneficial effect on information retrieval.

ISBD as Bibliographic Content Standard: Interweaving Threads, Contemplating a Future

This summary considers the final articles selected for the special issue, interweaving some common threads that bind them together in their consideration of the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD), consolidated edition, 2011, as a bibliographic content standard. With discussions of (1) the historical and current evolution of the ISBD, (2) the concept of Universal Bibliographic Control relative to an emerging Semantic Web environment, (3) ISBD and national cataloging codes, and (4) the continuing challenges of “non-book” resources, as context, the article concludes by exploring the question, “Is there a future for the ISBD?”

Consolidated Edition of ISBD, International Standard Bibliographic Description: A Standard to Trust, a Quality Brand

The article deals with the most important characteristics of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) standard, International Standard for Bibliographic Description (ISBD) Consolidated edition, and some important points of view that have influenced those characteristics, which are: to maintain user trust and the loyalty of customers; to help international identification of resources in accordance with its purpose; to provide the consistency and interoperability of information and to facilitate its reuse; to promote relationships with other standards (content and technological standards), and to introduce the new content stipulations necessary to adapt it to current technologies. The purpose of the article is to make the standard better known and to show the need for its maintenance from a marketing point of view applied to analyze the standard.

Social Cataloguing Sites: Features and Implications for Cataloguing Practice and the Public Library Catalogue

International Standard Bibliographic Description elements were used to evaluate the contents of 16 social cataloguing sites’ records. The heuristics Communication, Identity, and Perception were applied to the sites’ social features. While record content was poor, the social features create a community of interest where people can share their reading interests with one another.Des éléments de la description bibliographique internationale normalisée (ISBD) ont été utilisés pour évaluer le contenu de fiches de 16 sites de catalogage social. Les règles heuristiques Communication, Identité et Perception ont été appliquées aux caractéristiques des sites sociaux. Bien que le contenu des fiches était de mauvaise qualité, les fonctions sociales ont créé une communauté d'intérêt où les gens peuvent partager leurs intérêts de lecture.

Book Review: Practical Cataloguing: AACR, RDA and MARC 21

Practical Cataloguing: AACR, RDA and MARC 21. By Anne Welsh and Sue Batley. Chicago: Neal-Schuman, 2012. 217 p. $75 softcover (ISBN: 9781-55570-743-9). In their preface, Anne Welsh and Sue Batley, both cataloging instructors, write that Practical Cataloguing was commissioned to bridge a between cataloging textbooks meant for the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2)/MARC21 environment and textbooks focused on the new standard, RDA: Resource Description and Access. (1) Given that many libraries will delay implementing RDA until after the Library of Congress's planned implementation date of March 31, 2013, and that AACR2 records, like pre-AACR2 records, will be in library catalogs for years to come, book indeed Fills a that will be present for some time. Perhaps in recognition of the fact that nobody could write a definitive print cataloging manual in 2012 that would not be obsolete six months later, Practical Cataloguing is neither a how-to-catalog text nor a workbook. Rather, Practical Cataloguing provides a map to the gap between AACR2/MARC21 and RDA by combining a discussion of cataloging theory, history, and the issues (and controversies) created by current and future standards, augmented with practical advice for working catalogers in any environment. The book begins by discussing cataloging codes from Charles Cutter's Rules for a Printed Dictionary Catalogue through RDA. (2) Additional chapters address related issues such as the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD), and access points and headings. (3) The language avoids jargon and is accessible to both novice and experienced librarians. The text takes on a narrative quality as it discusses the evolution of ISBD, AACR2, and MARC21, why and how RDA (with its FRBR underpinnings) has come to replace AACR2, and navigating a workflow where both codes must coexist in an environment with many unknowns. Each chapter contains detailed explanations and copious examples of descriptive data and access points in ISBD, MARC21, RDA, and AACR2. Particularly valuable are the bolded Practice Notes in each chapter that give advice on the local interpretations, shortcuts, and compromises catalogers make in their local library systems. Readers in the United States will quickly recognize that the authors are based in the United Kingdom, both from the British spellings of and colour, and from the wry humor that slips into the text. For example, a practice note tells us that this rule is often ignored or forgotten by cataloguers, as we can see in example from a real catalogue (29); access points are introduced with, When confronted for the first time with the phrase 'access points' you might think that you are being faced with a piece of modern cataloguing jargon. And you might be right (49). Chapter 10 contains a number of sample records illustrating level 1 and level 2 AACR2 and RDA descriptions. The examples are in ISBD (AACR2 and RDA) and MARC 21 (AACR2 only) format. The examples are all for print monographs; given the ready availability of copy cataloging for print monographs, some examples of serial, nonprint, and nontextual materials would have been more helpful to new catalogers. …

UNIMARC and linked data

The main objective of this paper is to present arguments for and recommendations to representing UNIMARC formats for bibliographic and authority data in RDF (Resource Description Framework), the W3C standard for structuring data in Semantic Web and Linked Data environment. This is a continuation of the work already started by IFLA’s respective groups in representing International Standard Bibliographic Description, and conceptual models Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records, Functional Requirements for Authority Data and Functional Requirements for Subject Authority Data. The authors highly recommend that the Permanent UNIMARC Committee propose to IFLA the funding of the development of UNIMARC representation in RDF as a research and development project.

Three Universities in the South-South region and 250 publishers sampled from six states of the federation were used for the study. The instruments used were validated questionnaire and standardized checklist of the book. One null hypothesis was formulated and tested. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentages and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMC). The finding of the study shows that there is a significant relationship between ISBD and the quality of books published in Nigeria with regard to authorship, title, place of publication, year of publication, publisher’s name, ISBN, copyright, bibliography and index. The study concluded that ISBD adds quality to published books.

Standard library metadata models and structures for the Semantic Web

Purpose – There has been a significant increase in activity over the past few years to integrate library metadata with the Semantic Web. While much of this has involved the development of controlled vocabularies as “linked data”, there have recently been concerted attempts to represent standard library models for bibliographic metadata in forms that are compatible with Semantic Web technologies. This paper aims to give an overview of these initiatives, describing relationships between them in the context of the Semantic Web.Design/methodology/approach – The paper focusses on standards created and maintained by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, including Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records, Functional Requirements for Authority Data, and International Standard Bibliographic Description. Implementing FRBR in Libraries: Key Issues and Future Directions

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) published their groundbreaking report on Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) in 1998. In the years since, how has the library community adopted FRBR and what can librarians and users expect in the future? Zhang and Salaba explore the benefits of FRBR implementation, describing how it helps develop better systems for users, improve cataloging efforts, and better manage resources in a digital environment. Readers new to the FRBR concept will soon catch up with a thorough description of the entity-relationship conceptual model. The use of graphics to illustrate the relationships between and among the three entity groups (intellectual or artistic endeavors; authors, artists, or agents responsible for creation of content; and subjects of works) helps to clarify the model. FRBR, and its role in current cataloging practice, is also outlined in relation to International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD), Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC), Resource Description and Access (RDA), Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI), and emerging standards for the semantic web. Should the reader feel lost in this library alphabet soup, a handy list of acronyms is provided in the back of the book. The second half of the book looks at applications of FRBR in real-world settings. Art objects, classic texts, and works of fiction are a few examples of the types of materials that could be affected by FRBR. These special genres or formats are discussed individually with descriptions of how they may be affected by FRBR-related changes. In addition, many examples of existing FRBR implementation projects are highlighted, some in traditional library settings and some in specialized locales such as consortia, digital libraries, and institutional repositories. Screenshots are helpful in showing the differences in these FRBR-ized catalogs. A lengthy list of FRBR implementations is provided in the text, as well as in the appendix, for further research. However, these projects have not been implemented without difficulty, and the authors describe some of the challenges an institution faces when trying to FRBR-ize legacy data or normalize records from one system to another. So when will FRBR be implemented on a larger scale? There is no clear answer to this question as it clearly depends on cataloging standards. There is still plenty of room for additional research (particularly usability research). However, the many implementation examples cited by the authors show that FRBR has come a long way in the last decade and likely has a long future ahead. This book is certainly a must-read for catalogers and metadata specialists, and should be useful for any librarian interested in system design, usability studies, and the future of librarianship.

Training Successful Paraprofessional Copy Catalogers

This paper argues for an incremental, progressive approach to teaching an inexperienced paraprofessional cataloger the basic skills required for copy cataloging. It demonstrates how to devise a training plan that is logical and progressive and argues that the plan should be based on a thorough analysis of the skills and knowledge required by the job. It then describes a specific approach to teaching the terminology of cataloging, Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC), and International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) punctuation. These three are the basic skills most copy catalogers will need first, and their mastery should precede training for more complex skills.
