Prevalence and clinical characteristics of Sarcopenia in older adult patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a cross-sectional and follow-up study

BackgroundThe relationship between sarcopenia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been increasingly reported, and there is some overlap regarding their clinical features and pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) strategies. No Korean study has reported the actual prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with stable COPD who are recommended for pulmonary rehabilitation. This study evaluated the prevalence and clinical features of sarcopenia in older adult outpatients with stable COPD and the changes after 6 months.MethodsIn this cross-sectional and 6-month follow-up study, we recruited 63 males aged ≥ 65 diagnosed with stable COPD. Sarcopenia was diagnosed using the AWGS 2019 criteria, which included hand grip strength testing, bioelectrical impedance analysis, Short Physical Performance Battery administration, and Strength, Assistance with walking, Rising from a chair, Climbing stairs, and Falling screening tool administration. A 6-minute walk test (6 MWT) was conducted, forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures (MIP and MEP, respectively) and peak expiratory flow (PEF) were assessed, and patient-reported questionnaires were administered.ResultsAt baseline, 14 (22%) patients were diagnosed with possible sarcopenia, and eight (12.6%) were diagnosed with sarcopenia. There were significant differences in the age; body mass index; Body mass index, airflow Obstruction, Dyspnea, and Exercise index; modified Medical Research Council dyspnea scores; and International Physical Activity Questionnaire scores between the normal and sarcopenia groups. Whole-body phase angle, MIP, MEP, PEF, and 6-minute walk distance (6 MWD) also showed significant differences. Over 6 months, the proportion of patients with a reduced FEV1 increased; however, the proportion of patients with sarcopenia did not increase.ConclusionA relatively low prevalence of sarcopenia was observed in older adult outpatients with stable COPD. No significant change in the prevalence of sarcopenia was found during the 6-month follow-up period.Trial registrationThe study was registered with the Clinical Research Information Service (KCT0006720). Physical activity changes and related factors in chronic heart failure patients during the postdischarge transition period: a longitudinal study

BackgroundPhysical activity (PA) is essential and effective for chronic heart failure (CHF) patients. A greater understanding of the longitudinal change in PA and its influencing factors during the postdischarge transition period may help create interventions for improving PA. The aims of this study were (1) to compare the change in PA, (2) to examine the influencing factors of PA change, and (3) to verify the mediating pathways between influencing factors and PA during the postdischarge transition period in CHF patients.MethodsA total of 209 CHF patients were recruited using a longitudinal study design. The Chinese version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Patient-reported Outcome Measure for CHF (CHF-PRO), and the Chinese version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia Heart (TSK-Heart) were used to assess PA, CHF-related symptoms, and kinesiophobia. The IPAQ score was calculated (1) at admission, (2) two weeks after discharge, (3) two months after discharge, and (4) three months after discharge. Two additional questionnaires were collected during admission. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) models were fitted to identify variables associated with PA over time. We followed the STROBE checklist for reporting the study.ResultsThe PA scores at the four follow-up visits were 1039.50 (346.50-1953.00) (baseline/T1), 630.00 (1.00-1260.00) (T2), 693.00 (1-1323.00) (T3) and 693.00 (160.88–1386.00) (T4). The PA of CHF patients decreased unevenly, with the lowest level occurring two weeks after discharge, and gradually improving at two and three months after discharge. CHF-related symptoms and kinesiophobia were significantly associated with changes in PA over time. Compared with before hospitalization, an increase in CHF-related symptoms at two weeks and two months after discharge was significantly associated with decreased PA. According to our path analysis, CHF-related symptoms were positively and directly associated with kinesiophobia, and kinesiophobia was negatively and directly related to PA. Moreover, CHF-related symptoms are indirectly related to PA through kinesiophobia.ConclusionPA changed during the postdischarge transition period and was associated with CHF-related symptoms and kinesiophobia in CHF patients. Reducing CHF-related symptoms helps improve kinesiophobia in CHF patients. In addition, the reduction in CHF-related symptoms led to an increase in PA through the improvement of kinesiophobia.Trial RegistrationThe study was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (11/10/2022 ChiCTR2200064561 retrospectively registered).

Nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of Greek menopausal women.

Nutritional guidelines for postmenopausal women differ. This study aimed to assess postmenopausal women's knowledge, beliefs, and practices regarding nutrition during menopause and their dietary habits. This cross-sectional study was conducted in a menopause clinic, and data from 105 women were analyzed. A nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions (KAP) questionnaire was designed, structured, and piloted before implementation, based on the Hellenic dietary guidelines. International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Greek version, MedDietScore, and Menopause-specific Quality of Life questionnaires were administered. The mean ± SD age of the women was 56.9 ± 4.6 years. The mean ± SD KAP score was 12.2 ± 3.5. Those who lived in rural areas had lower KAP scores than those who lived in urban areas ( P = 0.004). Of all the women, 74.5% knew the Mediterranean diet pyramid, whereas 9.8% knew the Hellenic dietary guidelines. Women who had read the guidelines showed better knowledge of Mediterranean diet food groups (Pearson, 0.309; P = 0.039). Knowledge of dairy services was correlated with consumption of dairy products ( P = 0.002). Furthermore, 76.4% were willing to participate in nutrition education programs. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire score was positively correlated with years of smoking ( P = 0.002). Physical activity correlated with adherence to the Mediterranean diet ( P = 0.044). The majority of postmenopausal Greek women in this study were unaware of the Hellenic dietary guidelines. In general, women's knowledge of nutrition during menopause was moderate. Greek postmenopausal women are willing to participate in nutrition education programs, which should raise awareness of healthy lifestyles through nutrition, exercise, and smoking cessation.

Effect of anti-tumor necrosis factor therapy on the efficacy of aerobic exercise in patients with ankylosing spondylitis

Background: This study aims to evaluate the effects of aerobic exercise on ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients' clinical outcomes when combined with anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) treatments. Methods: Fifty patients diagnosed with AS participate in the study, with 25 on anti-TNF treatment and 25 off anti-TNF treatment. Patients' age, education, body mass index, smoking habits, symptom duration, date of diagnosis, medication use, comorbidities, and surgical history were assessed. Patients receive instructions to walk for 30 minutes, three times per week for twelve weeks and receive evaluation at weeks 0, 6, and 12. Disease activity is evaluated using Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), while sleep quality is assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The Ankylosing Spondylitis Life Quality (ASQoL) is used to measure the quality of life and physical activity is measured by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Results: During week 6, VAS, BASDAI, PSQI, and IPAQ scores were significantly lower in both groups, one taking anti-TNF and the other anti-TNF-free, in comparison to baseline and week 12 scores. After undergoing six weeks of aerobic exercise treatment, those taking anti-TNF displayed greater improvements in ASQoL scores in contrast to those who were not taking anti-TNF. Conclusion: Aerobic exercise is an effective intervention for enhancing disease activity, quality of life, sleep quality, and physical activity in patients with AS. Additionally, anti-TNF treatment appears to amplify the clinical benefits associated with exercise and facilitate patients' physical activity.

Comparison of patient-reported outcomes of physical activity and accelerometry in people with multiple sclerosis and ambulatory impairment: A cross-sectional study

BackgroundAccelerometers and patient-reported outcomes (PRO) are used to assess physical activity (PA) in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). So far it is unknown, however, whether these assessments represent mobility limitations in pwMS with mild and moderate to severe disability alike. The primary aim of the study was to assess the correlation between accelerometry and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) scores in pwMS with different degrees of ambulatory impairment. Taken its frequent use into account, the Godin Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire (GLTEQ) was investigated as additional PRO. MethodsIn a prospective cohort of pwMS, correlational analyses were performed between the number of daily steps, time spent in light, moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) and time spent sitting as assessed using accelerometry (ActiGraph®-GT3X), and the respective IPAQ and GLTEQ scores. Additionally, associations of PA with disease-specific characteristics, aerobic capacity (VO2peak), walking assessments (Timed 25-Foot Walk, T25FW; 2-Minute Walk Test, 2MWT) and walking perception (Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale-12; MSWS-12) were explored. Patient subgroups with mild (Expanded Disability Status Scale; EDSS score <4.0) and moderate to severe disability (EDSS ≥4.0) were analysed for the impact of ambulatory impairment on PA. Multiple linear regression was used to determine predictors of PA. ResultsA total of 56 pwMS completed the study, with a mean (standard deviation, SD) age of 48.4 (10.3) years, disease duration of 14.8 (9.6) years and median (interquartile range) EDSS score of 3.5 (2.0 – 4.4). Moderate to weak correlations were found between daily step count and IPAQ total metabolic equivalent (MET) minutes/week (p < 0.001; r = 0.506), MVPA MET-minutes/week (p < 0.01; r = 0.479) and walking MET-minutes/week (p < 0.05; r = 0.372) in the total cohort. Time spent sitting was inversely correlated with total MET-minutes/week and MVPA MET-minutes/week (p < 0.05; r = -0.358 and r = -0.365). Subgroup analysis revealed, that daily step count was significantly correlated with total MET-minutes/week, MVPA MET-minutes/week and walking MET-minutes/week (p < 0.01, r = 0.569; p < 0.01, r = 0.531 and p < 0.05, r = 0.480, respectively) in the “mild disability” subgroup only, whereas time spent sitting was inversely correlated with total MET-minutes/week (p < 0.05; r = -0.582) in the “moderate to severe disability” subgroup. There was no association between objectively assessed PA and GLTEQ scores in any group. In the total cohort, moderate to weak correlations were found between daily step count and walking assessments (T25FW: p < 0.01, ρ = -0.508; 2MWT: p < 0.01, ρ=0.463) and MSWS-12 (p < 0.001; ρ = -0.609). Moderate to weak correlations were also observed between VO2peak and walking assessments (T25FW: p < 0.01; ρ = -0.516; 2MWT: p < 0.01, ρ=0.480). Multiple linear regression analysis identified disability and VO2peak as predictors of PA (p = 0.045; β=0.25 and p < 0.001; β=0.49). ConclusionSignificant associations of objective PA measurements using accelerometry with IPAQ were found only in pwMS with “mild disability”. In pwMS with “moderate to severe disability”, IPAQ did not reflect the objectively assessed amount of PA. In our cohort, GLTEQ showed no association with objectively assessed PA. Thus, an MS-specific self-reported questionnaire for assessing PA is warranted.

Factors Predictive of the Level Of Physical Activity (PA) in Patients with Gonarthrosis in Sub-Saharan Africa

Background: Our aim was to determine the predictive factors of the level of physical activity (PA) in patients with gonarthrosis in the city of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso).&#x0D; Methods: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study based on clinical records, conducted from January 9 to 27, 2023. Using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), we assessed the level of PA in patients followed at CHU-Bogodogo for gonarthrosis. The significance threshold p&lt;0.05 was retained.&#x0D; Results: Sixty-seven patients were included. Fifty-six were women (83.58%). The mean age was 59.87± 12.53 years. Hypertension was noted in 34 patients (50.75%), diabetes in 16 (23.88%). The mean BMI was 28.70kg/m2± 6.73. Gonarthrosis was bilateral in 49 patients (73.13%). Gonarthrosis patients had a moderate level of PA, with a mean IPAQ score equal to 635.24±135 MET-minutes/week.&#x0D; 45 patients (67.16%) had a low level of physical activity (˂ 600 MET-minutes/week). In bivariate analysis, low PA was associated with age over 65 [OR=5.62, (CI=1.45-21.73), p&lt;0.001], hypertension [OR=2.83, (CI=1.27-6.31), p&lt;0.001], diabetes [OR=2.14, (CI=1.13-5.89), p&lt;0.031], and overweight [OR=2.43, (CI=1.17-6.12), p&lt;0.026]. Moderate PA was associated with age under 65 [OR=1.71, (CI=1.25-2.34), p&lt;0.005] and absence of hypertension [OR=1.86, (CI=1.19-2.89), p&lt;0.012].&#x0D; Conclusion : Gonarthrosis patients have a moderate level of PA. Factors associated with low PA were advanced age and sedentary comorbidities.&#x0D; Key words: Gonarthrosis, physical activity, Ouagadougou/Burkina Faso

P1101 Patient-reported physical activity of IBD patients is of concern when weighed with the international physical activity questionnaire regardless of disease activity and IBD phenotype: barriers and facilitators emerged from the extended "BE-FIT-IBD" cross-sectional study

Abstract Background As the World Health Organization recommends, regular physical activity (PA) determines quality of life. The qualitative/quantitative characteristics of ideal PA to be suggested for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) nor the relationship with disease activity are not yet well defined. This study aimed to weigh PA levels and barriers/facilitators to PA in a cross-sectional group of patients with IBD. Methods Consecutive Italian non-severe IBD patients (assessed with partial Mayo score for and Harvey-Bradshaw index) received an anonymous online questionnaire to assess PA levels using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), disease activity as Patient-Reported Outcomes 2 (PRO-2), and finally habits, beliefs, and barriers in conducting regular PA. Clinical, anthropometric, and demographic data were also collected. PA was processed as continuous units of resting metabolic rate in minutes/week (Met min/wk). Three PA groups were identified: inactive (&amp;lt; 700 Met min/wk), sufficiently active (700-2500 Met min/wk) and Health Enhancing PA (i.e., HEPA active, &amp;gt; 2500 Met min/wk) patients. Results The 219 patients enrolled exhibited overall PA levels of 834.5 Met min/wk, with a large proportion (94, 42.9%) classified as inactive. Only a minority (9, 4.1%) resulted as health-enhancing PA. Patients with a non-dyslipidaemia metabolic profile (p &amp;lt; 0.0001) or on biologics therapy (p=0.022) showed better IPAQ scores in moderate activities. PRO-2 correlated negatively with IPAQ intense activities scores (τ= -0.156, p=0.038) in ulcerative colitis patients. PRO-2 did not show notable sensitivity/specificity in predicting IPAQ inactivity (AUC &amp;lt; 0.6). IPAQ showed no notable differences when related to disease activity categories according to PRO-2 (p &amp;gt; 0.05). Physically active patients were more willing to discuss their PA with their IBDologists. Several barriers (e.g., diagnosis of IBD and fear of flare-ups after PA) are firmly rooted in physically inactive patients. Evacuation urgency (rectal syndrome) is the IBD-related barrier most physically inactive patients reported. Some fears about PA were worse felt in the absence of a stable partner (i.e., fear of worsening or recurrence of IBD, p &amp;lt; 0.05). Conclusion Many Italian IBD patients show a worrying rate of physical inactivity, depriving themselves of the multidimensional benefits that regular PA can bring. There is a need for IBDologists to act by removing barriers to PA and engaging in a regular discussion on the importance of PA with IBD patients. IPAQ has shown good feasibility and patient acceptance in this setting.

The relationship between internet addiction and physical activity levels of university students in a province in eastern Turkey.

Internet addiction and physical inactivity are often a major public health problem. This study aimed to determine the relationship between internet addiction (IA) and physical activity (PA) levels of university students in a province in eastern Turkey. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 638 students. Internet Addiction Test (IAT), and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) were administered. Chi-square, independent sample t-test, correlation analysis, one-way analysis of variance tests (ANOVA), Tukey HSD test, and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed. 64.6% of the participants were female, with a mean age of 20.4±2.4 and a mean body mass index (BMI) of 22.3±3.5. 83.4% of the participants were identified as those asymptomatic, 15.2% showed limited symptoms, and 1.4% were pathological internet users according to IAT. A statistically significant difference was found between IAT scores and gender, mother's education level, father's education level, academic success, smoking status, and alcohol use (p < 0.05). According to IPAQ scores, 28.1% of the students were inactive, 56.3% were moderate PA and 15.7% had vigorous PA levels. IPAQ total scores of male participants, smokers, and participants with exercise habits were found to be significantly higher (p < 0.05). The mean score IAT and IPAQ was found to be 30.9±18.9 and 1697.7±1847.0. A negative, significant correlation was found between students' PA and IA levels (p < 0.01). It has been observed that IA negatively affects PA. Seminars, conferences, and panels on the internet and physical activity should be organized for university students.

Effect of yoga-based exercises on functional capacity, dyspnea, quality of life, depression, anxiety, and sleep of infected healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic: A prospective clinical trial.

The study aimed to investigate the effect of yoga-based exercises on functional capacity, dyspnea, quality of life, depression, anxiety, and sleep quality following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Forty-one COVID-19-infected healthcare professionals (35 females, 6 males; mean age: 39.7±6.5 years; range, 28 to 55 years) who were actively working during the subacute period were included in the prospective controlled study between March 2021 and September 2021. The participants were divided into two groups: the yoga-based exercise group (YBEG; n=26) and the nonintervention group (n=15). Besides routine recommendations, the YBEG performed stretching, relaxation, isometric strengthening, breathing, and meditation exercises of 60 min twice a week for eight weeks. Clinical outcome was measured with flexibility tests (shoulder flexibility and sit and reach tests), hand grip strength, 6-min walk test, dyspnea score, Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventory, Short Form 36 (SF-36) quality of life, Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) before and after eight weeks in both groups. Beck anxiety scores, IPAQ scores, PSQI, SF-36 pain, and social functioning subparameters were positively statistically significant in the YBEG (p<0.05). The only parameter found to be insignificant in time and between groups was the SF-36 mental health subparameter (p>0.05). In addition, the YBEG had significant improvements in muscle strength, flexibility, functional capacity, physical activity level, quality of life, anxiety, depression levels, and sleep scores between before and after the eight-week intervention period (p<0.05). Yoga programs have led to an increase in functional capacity and physical performance, a decrease in anxiety and depression complaints, and an increase in the quality of life in healthcare professionals who were in the process of returning to work during the post-COVID-19.

COMPARISON OF FUNCTIONAL EXERCISE CAPACITY, PERIPHERAL MUSCLE STRENGTH, DYSPNEA AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN PATIENTS WITH PSORIASIS AND HEALTHY CONTROLS: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

Changes in Self-Esteem in Patients with Hirayama Disease and its Association with Prognosis After Anterior Cervical Fusion Procedures

To quantify self-esteem in patients with Hirayama disease (HD) and investigate the impact of this psychosocial factor on surgical outcomes in HD. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) was measured in 58 patients with HD before anterior cervical fusion. These patients further underwent motor unit number estimation, handgrip strength, disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand (DASH), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Beck Depression Index (BDI) before and 18 months after operation. Furthermore, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was administered to all patients at postoperative 18-month assessments. Compared with the general population, patients with HD showed a relatively lower RSES, and RSES was negatively associated with both postoperative DASH (r=-0.431, P<0.05) and preoperative to postoperative changes (r=-0.295, P<0.05) and positively associated with IPAQ (r=0.472, P<0.05). Similar to the difference in postoperative DASH scores, more patients with low self-esteem felt postoperative aggravated motor dysfunction than those with high/normal self-esteem (P<0.05). Postoperative BDI exerted a partial mediating effect on the relationship between RSES and DASH scores (B=-0.30, P<0.05), and postoperative BAI played a partial mediating effect on the relationship between RSES and IPAQ scores (B=0.30, P<0.05). The self-esteem of HD patients may be below the population norms. Importantly, relatively low self-esteem in HD patients may cause/worsen postoperative depression and anxiety, thereby resulting in poor self-reported surgical prognosis and an inactive lifestyle after operation. Therefore, perioperative treatment and rehabilitation efforts in HD patients, especially those with low self-esteem, should account for both physiological and psychological symptoms.

Kinesiophobia And Related Factors In Adult Patients With Familial Mediterranean Fever

Abstract Objective Kinesiophobia is a common problem in patients with rheumatic diseases and can cause physical inactivity, social isolation, disability, and poor quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate kinesiophobia and associated factors in patients with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF). Methods A total of 38 patients diagnosed with FMF volunteered to participate in the study. All patients were assessed using the Tampa Kinesiophobia Scale (TKS), the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results Thirty-three (86.8%) of the patients had TKS scores over 37, indicating high levels of kinesiophobia. The TKS score was positively correlated with the HADS depression score (r=0.530; p=0.001) and the FSS score (r=0.340; p=0.035) but was not significantly associated with age (r=0.102; p=0.543), disease duration (r=–0.110; p=0.511), body mass index (r=0.283; p=0.085), the HADS anxiety score (r=0.306; p=0.061), or the IPAQ score (r=–0.097; p=0.563). Conclusions Our sample of adult FMF patients showed high levels of kinesiophobia associated with fatigue and depression. Treatments focusing on kinesiophobia in FMF patients could help to increase the effectiveness of rehabilitation.

Resting metabolic rate in healthy Singaporeans: Performance of the Harris-Benedict equation and a new predictive model

Background Prediction equations for resting metabolic rate (RMR) are valuable in managing patients’ weight; however, no accurate equation exists for Singaporeans. Objective To develop and cross-validate a predictive regression equation for RMR in Singaporeans, using indirect calorimetry as the reference method. Methods 104 healthy Singaporeans (34.3 ± 12.2 years) participated, comprising 34 men and 70 women. Anthropometric measurements and demographics information were obtained from participants. RMR was measured via indirect calorimetry (TrueOne 2400 system). Stepwise regression analysis was used to develop the most parsimonious predictive equation. Performance of the equation was evaluated using ordinary least products (OLP) regression and Bland–Altman analysis, whilst internal cross-validation was performed by use of the predicted residual sum of squares (PRESS) method. To compare the new equation with existing ones, the performance of the Harris-Benedict equation was also evaluated. Results The best predictive equation takes the form RMR(kcal) = 918 + 16.5(weight)-135.7(gender) - 1152(Waist-to-height-ratio) +0.014(International Physical Activity Questionnaire Score), where gender = 1 (female) or 0 (male). OLP regression revealed no systematic bias for the new equation. Bland–Altman analysis showed that its total (systematic and random) error was 212 kcal. Internal model validation using the PRESS method revealed minimal reduction in predictive accuracy. In contrast, OLP regression showed a significant pattern of over-prediction by the Harris-Benedict equation (y-intercept = −280 kcal; 95%CI, −100 to −461 kcal). Conclusions Our new equation outperformed the Harris-Benedict equation in accurately predicting RMR in Singaporeans. Comprising easily obtained anthropometric and self-reported measures, we envisage its potential relevance in clinical and epidemiological settings.

Health Related Physical Fitness Measures: Reference Values and Predictive Equations for Saudi Female College Students

Health related-physical fitness (HRPF) is critical for maintaining and enhancing health and quality of life. Purposes: To estimate the reference values and predictive equations for frequently used clinical field HRPF measures in a sample of Saudi female college students aged 18 - 24 years. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, body fat percentage (BF %) was estimated. Curl-up test (CUT) and sit and reach test (SRT) were applied in 216 students. The Queen’s College Step Test (QCST) was used to predict maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max). Physical activity (PA) level was also measured using International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Results: The mean of BF %, SRT, CUT, and predicted VO2 max were 23.98% ± 6.13%, 17.10 ± 7.50 cm, 28.17 ± 7.72 number/min, and 39.58 ± 4.01 ml/kg/min respectively. There was no significant effect of age on all HRPF measures except for BF % (F (6,215) = 3.25, p (6,215) = 4.01, p strated that BMI was the predictor for BF % and SRT and explained 65% and 4% of total variance respectively. IPAQ score, age, and height were the predictors of CUT counting 17% of total variance. While, BMI and IPAQ score were the predictors for VO2 max and explained 13% of the total variance. Conclusion: Reference values can be used clinically in the evaluation of HRPF, in the rehabilitation process as well as in designing a program to improve the HRPF for female college students with consideration of age, height, BMI, and PA level for a particular population.

Erişkinlerde Akdeniz Diyetine Uyum, Fiziksel Aktivite Düzeyi ve Kronik Hastalık Arasındaki İlişkinin Belirlenmesi: Kesitsel Araştırma

Objective: The purpose of the study was to determine the adherence of adults to the Mediterranean diet (MD), physical activity status, and the association between adherence to the MD and chronic disease. Material and Methods: A total of 380 individuals were included in this cross-sectional study. The adherence to the MD was evaluated with the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Scale (MEDAS), and physical activities with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Results: There was no difference between men and women in terms of physical activity level assessed by IPAQ score and IPAQ classification (p>0.05). Moderate-high adherence to the MD in adults, mean MEDAS score, obesity, and chronic disease were significantly higher in women than in men (p<0.05). the rates of the individuals that had moderate/high adherence to the MD and the mean body mass index (BMI) values, frequency of chronic disease and frequency of previous dietary counseling were higher (p<0.05). In addition the frequency of previous dietary counseling was higher in physically inactive individuals (p<0.05). There were significant positive relations were detected between the MEDAS and BMI values (r=0.126, p=0.014). There were negative significant relations between IPAQ score, BMI (r=-0.118, p=0.022) and waist circumference values (r=-0.124, p=0.018). Conclusion: It was determined that while moderate compliance with the MD was observed, the level of physical activity was low in adults. It has shown the necessity and importance of developing preventive health services for nutrition and physical activity in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases.

Correlation between physical activity level and anterior knee pain in Indian recreational and professional athletes

BACKGROUND: Anterior knee pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints seen in the Indian population with high prevalence among those who are active in professional sports and recreational sports. It commonly occurs in many healthy young athletes, especially girls. The aim of the study is to compare the anterior knee pain in recreational and professional athletes. METHODS: This study is done to find the correlation between physical activity and anterior knee pain in recreational and professional athletes, using the Kujala Anterior Knee Pain Scale, Numeric pain rating scale (NPRS), Victorian Institute of Sports Assessment Scale (VISA) for measurement of pain, and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) for measurement of physical activity. A total of 112 recreational and professional athletes participated in the study. Both online and offline mode was used in data collection. RESULTS: There was a correlation between physical activity and anterior knee pain. CONCLUSION: We found a significant negative correlation between IPAQ and Kujala Scores in recreational and professional athletes. A positive correlation between IPAQ and VISA in recreational players and IPAQ and NPRS in professional athletes was found.

Sexual Function, Physical Activity, Mean Amplitudes and Maximal Voluntary Contraction of Pelvic Floor Muscles Are Related to Handgrip Strength: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Pelvic floor musculature assessment methods are generally invasive, subjective, and technologically expensive. Therefore, there is a need to identify other methods that can predict changes in the function of these muscles. This study aimed to verify whether the levels of strength and myoelectric activity of pelvic floor muscles (PFM) can be related to handgrip strength (HGS), to ensure faster and earlier identification of possible dysfunctions of this musculature. Furthermore, we verified whether these variables vary across different age groups. This was a cross-sectional observational study involving 44 healthy women. The women were divided into two groups: the young (18−35 years) and middle-aged (36−55 years) adult groups. Social, anthropometric, and clinical data were collected from the participants, and a functional assessment of their PFM was performed by bidigital palpation, electromyographic biofeedback (sEMG), and HGS (using a dynamometer). The levels of physical and sexual activity were measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and Sexual Quotient−Female version (SQ-F) questionnaire. There were no differences in HGS, power/pressure, sEMG, SQ-F score, or IPAQ score between the two groups (p > 0.05). Moderate correlation (r = 0.601; p = 0.019) was observed during multivariate analysis. HGS is related to mean amplitudes (p = 0.123), MVC (p = 0.043), sexual function (p = 0.049), and physical activity (p = 0.004). We therefore conclude that there were no differences between HGS and PFM strength in young adult and middle-aged women. Furthermore, HGS is related to the PFM functionality, sexual function, and physical activity.

Physical activity as a correlate of symptoms, quality of life, comorbidity, and disability status in Hispanics with multiple sclerosis

BackgroundHispanics with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience disproportionate rates of mobility disability compared to non-Hispanic Whites with MS. Physical activity (PA) is highlighted as a potential adjuvant therapy for improving MS symptoms and disease progression, however less than 30% of Hispanics with MS report sufficient levels of PA. ObjectivesThe current study aimed to examine the correlates of PA behavior among Hispanics with MS in the North American Research Committee on Multiple Sclerosis Registry (NARCOMS). MethodsIn Spring 2015, 136 NARCOMS participants identified as Hispanic and completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). IPAQ scores were converted to Health Contribution Scores (HCS) for estimating PA. The association between the HCS scores and MS symptoms (i.e., mobility, cognition, fatigue, spasticity, hand function, bowel/bladder, sensory, tremors, depression, and pain), quality of life (QOL), comorbid conditions, and disability status were evaluated using Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficients with follow-up multivariable regression analyses. ResultsThe mean age among participants was 58 years and 79% identified as female. The mean MS disease duration was 20 years and 68% reported relapsing disease course. The mean HCS score among participants was 15.6 ± 20.9. HCS was moderately associated with disability status (rs = −0.39), mobility (rs = −0.37), bowel/bladder function (rs = −0.33), and physical health related QOL (r = 0.32). There were small associations between HCS and hand function (rs = −0.29), fatigue (rs = −0.20), and tremor (rs = −0.25). Multivariable regression analyses indicated that disability status, mobility, bowel/bladder function, and physical health related QOL were all associated with HCS but did not independently contribute to the models when controlling for age, sex, and employment. ConclusionsThis study highlights correlates of PA behavior among Hispanics with MS. Researchers and clinicians may consider disability status, mobility, and physical health related QOL in future studies examining PA among Hispanics with MS.
