IMS observations of infrasound and acoustic-gravity waves produced by the January 2022 volcanic eruption of Hunga, Tonga: A global analysis

The 15 January 2022 Hunga, Tonga, volcano's explosive eruption produced the most powerful blast recorded in the last century, with an estimated equivalent TNT yield of 100–200 megatons. The blast energy was propagated through the atmosphere as various wave types. The most prominent wave was a long-period (>2000 s) surface-guided Lamb wave with energy comparable to that of the 1883 Krakatoa Lamb wave; both were clearly observed by pressure sensors (barometers) worldwide. Internal gravity, acoustic-gravity, and infrasound waves were captured in great detail by the entire infrasound component of the International Monitoring System (IMS). For instance, infrasound waves (<300 s period) were seen to circumnavigate Earth up to eight times. Atmospheric waves captured by the IMS infrasound network and selected barometers near the source provide insight on Earth's impulse response at planetary scales.

Characterisation of the Coherent Infrasound Sources Recorded by the Infrasound International Monitoring System Station I48TN in Tunisia (Mines &amp;amp; Quarries)

The I48TN is one of the 60 International Monitoring System (IMS) stations of the Comprehensive nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), characterized by its location in the heart of the IMS Infrasound network. The ability of the International Monitoring System (IMS) infrasound network to detect atmospheric nuclear explosions and other signals of interest is strongly dependent on station-specific ambient noise. This ambient noise, includes both incoherent wind noise and real coherent infrasonic waves. Infrasound analysis software detects tens to hundreds of events per day which consume a lot of time for the Infrasound analysts, to define and categorize events where around 90% of the detections are coherent noise. This study analyzed the importance of the synergy between infrasound and seismic data, and provided the infrasound data analyst with the most important local coherent infrasound sources in the region as recorded by the IMS station I48TN, in order to reduce the workload of the analysts and give them a clear view on the coherent noise affecting this station for better discrimination between events of interest like nuclear explosions and coherent sources. DTK_GPMCC and DIVA software were used to perform this study. Geotool software from the International Data Centre (IDC) was used in analysing seismic data from the Tunisian IMS station KEST. The result of this study allowed the characterization of the most important coherent local infrasound sources (Mines and Quarries) which are considered as coherent noise to I48TN station and correct parameters in some reference events in the Reference Event Database source of the International Data Centre.

How Can the International Monitoring System Infrasound Network Contribute to Gravity Wave Measurements?

Gravity waves (GWs) propagate horizontally and vertically in the atmosphere. They transport energy and momentum, and therefore GWs can affect the atmospheric circulation at different altitude layers when dissipating. Thus knowledge about the occurrence of GWs is essential for Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP). However, uniform networks for covering GW measurements globally are rare, especially in the troposphere. It has been shown that an infrasound station of the International Monitoring System (IMS) infrasound network is capable of measuring GWs at the Earth’s surface. The IMS was deployed for monitoring the atmosphere to verify compliance with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban-Treaty. In this study, the Progressive Multi-Channel Correlation Method (PMCC) is used for re-processing up to 20 years of IMS infrasound recordings in order to derive GW detections. For this purpose, two alternative PMCC configurations are discussed, covering GW frequencies equivalent to periods of between 5 min and 150 min. These detections mainly reflect sources of deep convection, particularly in the tropics. At mid-latitudes, coherent wind noise more often produces spurious detections. Combining the results of both configurations provides a global dataset of ground-based GW measurements, which enables the calculation of GW parameters. These can be used for improving NWP models.

Using barometric time series of the IMS infrasound network for a global analysis of thermally induced atmospheric tides

Abstract. The International Monitoring System (IMS) has been established to monitor compliance with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and comprises four technologies, one of which is infrasound. When fully established, the IMS infrasound network consists of 60 sites uniformly distributed around the globe. Besides its primary purpose of determining explosions in the atmosphere, the recorded data reveal information on other anthropogenic and natural infrasound sources. Furthermore, the almost continuous multi-year recordings of differential and absolute air pressure allow for analysing the atmospheric conditions. In this paper, spectral analysis tools are applied to derive atmospheric dynamics from barometric time series. Based on the solar atmospheric tides, a methodology for performing geographic and temporal variability analyses is presented, which is supposed to serve for upcoming studies related to atmospheric dynamics. The surplus value of using the IMS infrasound network data for such purposes is demonstrated by comparing the findings on the thermal tides with previous studies and the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications Version 2 (MERRA-2), which represents the solar tides well in its surface pressure fields. Absolute air pressure recordings reveal geographical characteristics of atmospheric tides related to the solar day and even to the lunar day. We therefore claim the chosen methodology of using the IMS infrasound network to be applicable for global and temporal studies on specific atmospheric dynamics. Given the accuracy and high temporal resolution of the barometric data from the IMS infrasound network, interactions with gravity waves and planetary waves can be examined in future for refining the knowledge of atmospheric dynamics, e.g. the origin of tidal harmonics up to 9 cycles per day as found in the barometric data sets. Data assimilation in empirical models of solar tides would be a valuable application of the IMS infrasound data.

Automated detection and cataloging of global explosive volcanism using the International Monitoring System infrasound network

AbstractWe experiment with a new method to search systematically through multiyear data from the International Monitoring System (IMS) infrasound network to identify explosive volcanic eruption signals originating anywhere on Earth. Detecting, quantifying, and cataloging the global occurrence of explosive volcanism helps toward several goals in Earth sciences and has direct applications in volcanic hazard mitigation. We combine infrasound signal association across multiple stations with source location using a brute‐force, grid‐search, cross‐bearings approach. The algorithm corrects for a background prior rate of coherent unwanted infrasound signals (clutter) in a global grid, without needing to screen array processing detection lists from individual stations prior to association. We develop the algorithm using case studies of explosive eruptions: 2008 Kasatochi, Alaska; 2009 Sarychev Peak, Kurile Islands; and 2010 Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland. We apply the method to global IMS infrasound data from 2005–2010 to construct a preliminary acoustic catalog that emphasizes sustained explosive volcanic activity (long‐duration signals or sequences of impulsive transients lasting hours to days). This work represents a step toward the goal of integrating IMS infrasound data products into global volcanic eruption early warning and notification systems. Additionally, a better understanding of volcanic signal detection and location with the IMS helps improve operational event detection, discrimination, and association capabilities.

The European Arctic: A Laboratory for Seismoacoustic Studies

The International Monitoring System (IMS) for verifying compliance with the Comprehensive Nuclear‐Test‐Ban Treaty (CTBT) comprises sensors associated with four monitoring technologies: seismic, infrasound, hydroacoustic, and radionuclide. The so‐called waveform technologies (seismic, infrasound, and hydroacoustic) are used to detect and locate events that could constitute treaty violations. All four technologies may be employed to investigate the nature of events, with the network of radionuclide sensors in place to provide evidence of a nuclear explosion. Historical, political, and technical issues surrounding the CTBT are discussed by Dahlman et al. (2009, 2011). The global IMS infrasound network (Fig. 1) is primarily to detect signals generated by atmospheric nuclear tests. Figure 1. The IMS infrasound network has been deployed over the last two decades (Brachet et al. , 2010; Christie and Campus, 2010), and only with the network approaching completion has a realistic picture of its detection capability emerged (Le Pichon et al. , 2009; Green and Bowers, 2010). The detectability of atmospheric signals is governed by a seasonally varying wind‐determined anisotropy. In the northern summer, the stratospheric winds blow predominantly east to west, facilitating the detection of infrasound at stations west of sources and inhibiting the detection at stations east of sources. In the northern winter, the winds blow in the opposite direction changing the sense of high and low detectability. The reverse patterns occur in the southern hemisphere. There is increasing interest in using infrasound for probing atmospheric structure (e.g., Lalande et al. , 2012), and the broader properties and applications of infrasound are discussed by Evers and Haak (2009) and Hedlin et al. Localization of microbarom sources using the IMS infrasound network

Multiyear continuous infrasound monitoring with the global International Monitoring System (IMS) demonstrates that microbaroms, generated by nonlinear interaction of opposing oceanic surface waves, are globally observed at equatorial, middle, and high latitudes. Direction of arrival of microbarom signals are systematically estimated at all IMS infrasound stations. Using a cross‐bearing method, we perform a monthly localization of worldwide microbarom sources. At most stations, microbarom detections show clear seasonal trends, driven by stratospheric wind reversals and source effects. Five‐year averaging of the detections provides global and statistical observations of seasonal source variations. Our microbarom source locations represent a first attempt to infer ocean swell characteristics from global and long‐term measurements. We show that the monthly averaged source locations exhibit clear seasonal switching between the northern and southern hemispheres. Such an approach can help with evaluating the network detection capability, and provides new insights into quantitative relationships between infrasonic observables, atmospheric specifications, and ocean–atmosphere interactions.

A global study of volcanic infrasound characteristics and the potential for long-range monitoring

Volcanic infrasound from explosive eruptions is detectable at distances up to 1000 s of km and is often recorded on the International Monitoring System (IMS) infrasound network. Though infrasound produced by individual volcanoes has previously been studied, more general relationships between infrasound characteristics and eruption parameters remain unclear. Therefore, using a dataset comprising 110 events at 39 globally distributed volcanoes, we assess the ability of the IMS to monitor remote volcanoes and investigate whether volcanic infrasound exhibits consistent trends across a range of eruption styles and intensities. Acoustic pressure amplitude and frequency content of the volcanic infrasound were measured, and acoustic energy was also calculated. These were compared, along with the maximum distance of detection for each event, to the maximum plume height reported for the event, which was used as a proxy for event intensity. Of the events investigated 62% were detected by at least one infrasound station. The maximum distance at which an event was detected generally increased with the plume height, and infrasound produced during the eruption of Manam, PNG in January 2005, which produced a plume which rose over 20 km above the summit, was detected at a distance of 10,671 km. Total acoustic energy and acoustic pressure amplitude (corrected for geometrical spreading) increased with plume height, whilst the lowest frequency present in the volcanic infrasound decreased. Additionally, relationships seen between infrasound characteristics and eruption plume height indicate that analyses of this data alone could constrain vital estimates of plume heights for otherwise un-observed eruptions. Taken together these findings indicate that if made available for this purpose in the future, the IMS infrasound network could complement existing monitoring techniques by detecting and characterising eruptions at remote volcanoes which often have no local monitoring networks.
