Analyzing Video Communication Strategies of Chinese International Student Vloggers from a Cross-Cultural Perspective

The number of vloggers identified as Chinese international students on social media has been steadily increasing in recent years. This can be attributed to two key factors. Firstly, the growth of the international education industry has provided more opportunities for Chinese students to study abroad and gain firsthand experience of foreign cultures. Secondly, the popularity of social media platforms in China has encouraged individuals to create diverse content, including vlogs. These Chinese international students have gained popularity as content creators on Bilibili. Through their vlogs, they act as cultural ambassadors, providing relatable guidance for audiences to explore and comprehend the similarities and differences between foreign cultures and their own. This study focuses on five influential vloggers who identify as international students on Bilibili, analyzing the language, themes, and characteristics of their top ten-ranked videos. The findings indicate that these vlogs utilize a combination of languages, tackle youthful themes, and explore socially relevant topics to elucidate cross-cultural content, and both highlight and bridge the challenges in cross-cultural communication.

The Market Strategy of the International Education Industry: A differentiation perspective in research

The outbreak of COVID-19 in 2019 has had a profound impact on the overseas education industry, resulting in widespread enterprise self-protection measures such as layoffs, institutional restructuring, marketing strategy adjustments, downsizing and even bankruptcy. Numerous enterprises have proactively adjusted their marketing strategies through rapid and differentiated management methods to navigate and thrive during the epidemic. This paper primarily investigates the differentiated market strategy of the overseas study industry, analyzes the significance of differentiated management for overseas study enterprises, discusses the perspective of differentiation in formulating market strategies within the overseas study industry, and proposes specific countermeasures with an aim to provide impetus for the development of large, medium-sized, small, and micro-scale overseas study enterprises in this sector.

Why confidence leads to swifter tertiary education choices: A qualitative study of the international tertiary education industry of Australia

This paper investigates international students' confidence as a base for imminent tertiary education decisions. International students are a highly sought-after commodity, particularly during and after a global pandemic when the income streams of tertiary education providers are limited. In-depth interviews were conducted with students who sought guidance towards an international study experience to explore the guiding research questions, (1) how does confidence impact tertiary education decisions of international students and (2) what is the relationship between confidence and time to make a tertiary education decision? Set within the context of the international tertiary education industry of Australia, the original contribution stems from identifying that guidance towards an international study experience is affected by confidence in; guidance counselors, the brand name of the university, and the tertiary education decision itself. The identified confidence characteristics in this study have an inverse relationship with the length of time taken for the students' decision-making process. This leads to swifter finalizations of tertiary education decisions by students increasing returns on education providers’ admission activities.

A Survey on International Chinese Online Education Platform

With the development of China's economy and culture and the promotion of China's status in the world, people around the world are increasingly enthusiastic about understanding Chinese culture, and the demand for Chinese language learning is also growing. More and more people are engaged in the international Chinese language education industry. Since the outbreak of the epidemic in the spring of 2020, countless Chinese teachers have been "stuck" and students "stuck". This seems to have hindered the objectivity of the international Chinese education industry, but it has also opened up another international Chinese education model, namely online international Chinese education. Under the circumstances of global outbreak, the network for teachers and students has set up a bridge for the learning and communication, the Chinese as a foreign language classroom moved to online, from the aspect of job opportunities, it also created another for international Chinese teachers can teach Chinese as a foreign language of jobs, each big international Chinese education platform advance, based on their own platform "monkey" in Chinese, for example, From the establishment and development of the platform, selection and training of teachers, curriculum design and user experience from several aspects, analyses the status quo of the platform of the "monkey" in Chinese, tease out some of the thinking about the present situation of the platform, hoping to promote the upgrading of international Chinese online education platform, at the same time to the teachers engaged in online international Chinese education industry to provide some reference opinions.

Research on the development strategy in introduction of Chinese students based on SWOT analysis by Korean international education industry

According to the statistics of the Korea Educational Development Institute (KEDI) from 2000 to 2020, Chinese students have entered a period of rapid growth and stable development. Chinese students studying in Korea peaked in 2019, falling for the second consecutive year after 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and multiple factors. In fact, the growth rate of Chinese students in South Korea has been on a marked decline since 2017. The strategy and present situation of attracting Chinese students are important to the Korean international education industry, including Strength, Opportunities, Weakness and Threats. The SWOT analysis shows that the attraction of Chinese students is affected by many factors such as Chinese-Korean relations, the policy of studying in Korea, the strategy of Korean universities, and the satisfaction of students

Sustainability and the Australian international higher education industry: towards a multidimensional model

PurposeThis paper aims to explore how the Australian Government represented issues of sustainability in Australian international higher education (IHE) policies and how it framed efforts to foster enhanced strategies for sustainable development of IHE. This research calls for a change from one-dimensional economic sustainability to a more multi-dimensional conception of sustainability, including emphasizing the role of the political sphere in issues of sustainability.Design/methodology/approachThis paper uses discourse analysis of policy documents, specifically Bacchi’s (2009) “what is the problem represented to be” approach, to explore the problematization behind selected government policies related to IHE in Australia.FindingsThis research identified existing challenges and factors that have affected the sustainability of Australian IHE and examined how the Australian Government constructed this issue. In light of this approach, a theoretical model is proposed from internal resource analysis and external industry and foreign market structure analysis to help foster more sustainable development of IHE.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is based on policy document analysis. Consequently, future empirical research is needed to examine the impact of these policies and further substantiate the findings of this study.Practical implicationsThis paper proposes a theoretical model for strategy making that helps gain and maintain sustainable competitive advantage in IHE from a more integrated perspective; such an approach enables more systemic thinking on strategy proposals and offers a reference for future practice. This research will contribute to policy design for the sustainability of the Australian IHE industry and promote change from a one-dimensional economic sustainability to a more multi-dimensional sustainability approach, thereby offering a point of reference for other countries that face similar issues.Social implicationsThis study points out the need to broaden the business focus, expand the value created from shareholder value to the common good and change “inside-out” economic perspectives to “outside-in” integrated perspectives for business, including the IHE industry.Originality/valueThe sustainability of IHE has become an important concern in Australian policies but is an area for further inquiry in academic discussion and research. By closely examining government policies, particularly from a discursive approach (after Bacchi), this paper makes a contribution to policy design for the sustainability of the Australian IHE industry, helping to promote a more multi-dimensional approach to sustainability.

The Development Status and Future Trend of China’s International Basic Education Industry——Interview With Qi Shu, an International Basic Education Expert

With the development of economic globalization, information technology, and world integration, the internationalization of education has become an important trend in education reform and development. Since the 1990s, China has conducted pioneering explorations of international basic education and gradually upgraded it to a national strategy. Under the background of promoting the “Belt and Road” initiative, primary and secondary schools need to explore and develop in diverse ways to promote international basic education, such as building an international basic education core literacy target system, optimizing the international basic education content system, cultivating leaders with international horizon, strengthening the construction of humanities exchange mechanism, and establishing international basic education academic organizations to promote people-to-people bonds and cultural understanding. In this context, what is the status quo of the development of China’s international basic education industry? What kind of development will there be in the future? Based on this, the reporter interviewed Qi Shu, a well-known international basic education expert in China, asking her to analyze the development status of China’s international basic education industry and give her own insights on the future development trend of the industry.

Overcoming the White Knight Complex: Social License and Internationalization for Society

The article investigates the concept of internationalization in higher education for society (IHES) and discusses the role of social license to internationalize, its contextual variations, and implications for internationalization practices in New Zealand and Indonesia. The notion of social license to operate is common in the extraction and some service industries; however, the concept of social license to internationalize constitutes an innovative direction for research concerned with IHES and the global international education industry. Social license to internationalize emerged as a pivotal feature of internationalization practices in New Zealand and Indonesia. It reflected the public recognition of IHES, manifested in the cultural and social value of internationalization. The construction of social license to internationalize presented itself as a strategic priority for the governments and higher education institutions (HEIs) in both research settings. The conceptual underpinnings of social license to internationalize, and hence the means of constructing the latter varied depending on the local context, but they served a common purpose of reification of internationalization practices. The study of social license to internationalize contributes to a broader discussion on IHES and sheds lights on the mechanisms of building meaningful and mutually beneficial connections between the stakeholders of the global international education industry and the wider public.

Development of International Education Industry in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area

Building the Greater Bay Area city cluster is a crucial national development strategy for China. As a vital hub of the Belt and Road Initiative, the Greater Bay Area cannot cultivate into an “international first-class bay area and world-class city cluster” without technological innovation and rapid economic progress, and technological innovation and economic development cannot be attained without the training of high-end talents through international education. Thus, the development of an international education demonstration zone is essential in the formation and development of the Greater Bay Area and making it a highland for education and talent, as well as giving full play to the social function of education. As the core of the accumulation of educational resources in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, the current situation, future opportunities, and development path of international education development in the Greater Bay Area while building a world-class international education center have become the starting point of this study.

ПОДГОТОВКА СТУДЕНТОВ К ПРОФЕССИОНАЛЬНОЙ ДЕЯТЕЛЬНОСТИ В УСЛОВИЯХ ПОЛИЭТНИЧЕСКОЙ ГРУППЫ

The phenomenon of multiethnic groups is becoming an urgent issue at the university level. An increased number of mixed groups of learners from different cultures highlights the lack of appropriate methods and means of planning the educational process and requires developing a newer scientific understanding of the education individualization as a strategy for training specialists at the pedagogical university. This paper deals with the theoretical foundations of the individualization in students training in the multiethnic group. The authors have set the objectives of studying the passport of the current national project «Education» by the Russian government; of analyzing the theoretical foundations of multicultural education; of developing some new principles which are to complete the author's concept of individualization of professional training of students at the pedagogical university; of describing the culture maps as a means of individualization of education within multiethnic groups. The authors come to the conclusion that even general understanding of students’ culture-specific behaviours in the educational environment, made into the culture map for each individual multiethnic university group of the university,can help to promote mutual understanding between the subjects of the educational process, which is a factor of the outer individualization. Besides, it can help students accurately understand the professional goals of their training at a Russian pedagogical university, and motivate students to develop an active social attitudes, which is a factor of the inner individualization of training. The authors emphasise the important role of the culture-specific factors in the process of individualization of professional training of students in the multiethnic group of a pedagogical university. The results obtained in the paper can be used in education in order to increase the attractiveness and competitiveness of the Russian universities in the international education industry.

Research on the Current Status and Policy Evolution of International Education Industry in China

The paper analyzed the current status and policy evolution of international education industry in China based on statistical data of the education market scale, source countries, education levels and study subjects. It is found that the international education in China has undergone three major stages, including the stage of “unified national management dominated by politics”, the stage of “exploration of the model for self-financed study abroad”, and the stage of “all-round open development”. The achievements of international education industry are closely related to the key policies in the 3 stages. The research shows that the scale of international education in China is basically the same as that in the developed countries but there exists a big import and export deficit since China has slightly smaller international market share. Asian and African countries are the main sending countries of international students, and students from these countries prefer to receive academic education in China than those from Europe and America. In terms of major subjects, Chinese language and literature are still the main subjects, but engineering, economics and management are becoming more popular. Finally, suggestions are made on how to further expand the international education market and optimize the international education structure in China.

A new generation of ‘incorporated wife’? making sense of international students’ spouses in the US

Responding to the feminist call to reconfigure the outlook of transnational moving, this article explores the gendered experiences of the international students’ spouses behind the booming international education industry in the United States (US). With 20 in-depth interviews, we examined how immigration and university policies feminize the spouses of international students and how they navigate this feminized role. We show that the categorization of spouses as ‘dependents’, by the Department of Homeland Security of the US, justifies and normalizes the discriminating policies towards the spouses, which introduce and perpetuate the gendered binaries of student/spouse, initiator/follower, independent/dependent, and public/private, during which the spouses are repositioned to the feminized half. That said, spouses demonstrate agentic contestations during this process. Particularly, we show that female and male spouses adopt different strategies to transcend the femininity conferred by this role: female spouses’ contestation is more alliance-based while male spouses tend to follow an individualist approach.

The west, the rest and the knowledge economy: a game worth playing?

ABSTRACTThe unprecedented geopolitical and economic shifts across the world have triggered much debate over the re-thinking of internationalisation of higher education (IoHE). This article discusses how a deeper understanding of the knowledge economy paradigm contributes to re-thinking IoHE, and how it reshapes the relations between the west and the rest in the international education industry. In the global knowledge race, the rules are set by the knowledge economy agenda, but these rules could be changed through appropriate IoHE strategies. The knowledge economy promotes a predominantly western-oriented knowledge paradigm, and IoHE contributes to its dissemination. For this reason, it is important to consider how the western theoretical underpinnings of IoHE and the knowledge economy are transformed and integrated in a given local context and if this game is worth playing.

International Education in Australia: The Roller Coaster

Australia's international education ‘industry', a major export sector, slumped in 2010 because of more restrictive migration policy and visa processing, a crackdown on backdoor migration schemes, a high Australian dollar and tardy official response to racist violence affecting international students. A package of reforms in late 2011 freed up visa processing and work experience for graduates but so far industry recovery has been slow and uncertain.

Immigrant Entrepreneurship and the Opportunity Structure of the International Education Industry in Vancouver and Toronto

This study is situated within a broad research field of immigrant entrepreneurship and pays particular attention to the international education businesses owned and operated by Korean immigrants. Seeking causal factors of disproportionately high rates of self-employment among immigrant groups, researchers in this field have developed two distinct streams of theoretical explanation. While social capital, class and ethnic resources are often identified as major factors of successful immigrant entrepreneurship, the political economic structure (i.e., a wide range of opportunity structures including business regulations and market conditions) is also seen as an important pre-condition for immigrant business ventures. Drawing upon the analytical framework of the mixed embeddedness model by Kloostermen and Rath (2001), this study examines how different institutional environments and the consumer demand base of the international education industry result in different opportunity structures for Korean immigrant entrepreneurs in Vancouver and Toronto, Canada.

Improving the International Student Experience in Australia Through Embedded Peer Mentoring

As Australia endeavors to sustain growth of its international education industry, there have been major concerns regarding the experience of international students. This review examines the international student experience in Australia, particularly issues surrounding study–work–life balance (SWLB), acculturation, health, and well-being. The current university initiatives of pastoral care services and peer mentoring are evaluated and noted to be underutilized by students. Consequently, an internationalized, university-wide peer-mentor-embedded classroom initiative is proposed. While attempting to overcome the main methodological issues identified, future research is invited to test whether such an initiative is effective in producing positive acculturation, SWLB, health and well-being outcomes for both international and local students.

Immobile Transnationalisms? Young People and Their in situ Experiences of ‘International’ Education in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, the number of international degree programmes available locally to students has proliferated in recent years, and British universities are the largest provider of so-called ‘transnational education’ in the territory. This paper draws on the findings of a qualitative project examining British degree programmes offered in Hong Kong, and their implications for local young people. In particular, it explores the fact that the vast majority of these ‘international’ qualifications involve no travel whatsoever, and are taught and awarded entirely in Hong Kong. Interviews with students/graduates, with direct experience of a British degree, elucidate the relationship between (im)mobility and the accumulation of cultural capital through international education. It is suggested that immobility does have an impact upon young people’s experiences of higher education. The findings contribute to discussions around the relationship between education, mobility and class, and the implications of a consolidating international education industry for class reproduction and social inequalities.

Rethinking the Neoliberal Nexus of Education, Migration, and Institutions

The rise of neoliberalism and economic globalization is identified as a significant factor contributing to macroscale structural changes in the political economy of migration and education in Korea and Canada. In this paper the empirical focus of analysis is on how nation-states have played important roles in shaping the market conditions of the international education industry under the structural changes brought about by neoliberalization. I pay particular attention to how different public institutions have become actively engaged in profit-generating activities through promoting and selling Canadian education. In so doing, I reconsider the implications of neoliberalism for the political economy of migration and international education. Drawing upon empirical evidence collected from fieldwork in Seoul and Vancouver, this paper aims to explore the complexities and locally specific outcomes of neoliberal projects. In relation to the rise of international education, this paper adds to the burgeoning literature that acknowledges that taken-for-granted views on neoliberalism are problematic and further highlights the role of public institutions as active facilitators in the process of market expansion.

A Colourful University Life? Transnational Higher Education and the Spatial Dimensions of Institutional Social Capital in Hong Kong

ABSTRACTTransnational higher education represents a lesser‐known aspect of the international education industry. In relation to the UK, transnational education is a booming business. British qualifications are offered in 217 countries outside the UK, representing in excess of 388,000 students in total. These students are fascinating precisely because they are acquiring an ‘international education’ in situ, raising a number of pertinent questions relating to the ‘capital’ young people are developing. How valuable is a British degree delivered entirely overseas? What does it actually represent – both conceptually, in terms of students' (im)mobilities, and in relation to individuals' embodied experiences of transnational higher education? This paper draws on the findings of a qualitative project examining British degree programmes offered in Hong Kong and their implications for young people locally. We focus on the experiences of students and graduates and the intentions of a number of UK ‘providers’ (representing different British higher education institutions). We explore the social capital accessible to students undertaking transnational educational programmes and focus in particular upon the spatial availability of ‘institutional social capital’. We argue that the ability of young people to cultivate social capital in the context of transnational higher education is circumscribed in various ways, with implications for subsequent employment opportunities and social mobility. Our paper furthermore responds to recent calls to spatialise the conversion of social capital. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
