A bibliometric examination of global port facility research propagation (1975 - 2023)

Seaports play a crucial role in international trade and economic development. This study aims to analyze the existing literature on port facilities to identify research patterns and emerging areas of interest. Using the Scopus database, the researchers searched for publications related to port facilities and found a total of 178 scholarly articles. The data was analyzed using Microsoft Excel, Publish or Perish and VOS viewer. The study examined subject areas, keywords, citations, and Journal/publishers metrics, to understand the key contributors and collaborative efforts in this field. The findings revealed a lack of scholarly evaluation of port facilities literature until 1975. From 1975 to 2003, there were 57 publications with very few citations. However, interest in this field grew significantly between 2004 and 2023, with 114 publications and 496 citations. Most of the documents were written in English, and there was concentration of research efforts in specific areas. International collaboration was observed among 12 countries. The study suggests the need for more research, collaborations, and citations in the field of port facilities, particularly in areas beyond engineering and earth and planetary sciences. Logistics management, computing, and maritime should be further explored to address gaps in the current literature.

Evaluating the Challenges and Prospects of Cross-Cultural Communication in Promoting Free Trade Zones in Nigeria

Free Trade Zones (FTZs) in Nigeria attract a diverse array of workers, businesses, and management teams from various cultural backgrounds. Effective communication within these environments is crucial for facilitating idea exchange, building trust, and maintaining relationships. With the expansion of global trade, the significance of cross-cultural communication in ensuring successful business interactions is paramount. However, the convergence of diverse cultural, linguistic, and business practices in Nigeria presents challenges that impede the optimal functioning of FTZs. This study delineates the challenges and prospects of cross-cultural communication in promoting investment in Nigerian FTZs. Using a qualitative approach, it employs in-depth interviews and document analysis to comprehensively explore these issues. Engaging stakeholders from different cultural backgrounds, the study identifies key communication challenges, including language barriers, stereotypes, ethnocentrism, and non-verbal communication differences. Despite these obstacles, implementing intercultural training programs and digital communication tools can enhance business interactions. This research contributes to international business, intercultural communication, and economic development discourse, offering insights for policymakers, business practitioners, and academics.

The article summarizes the results of the 26th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2023), which took place in St. Petersburg from June 14 to 17, 2022. V. P. Zhuravel, Head of the Centre for Arctic Studies of the Institute of Europe RAS, is a permanent member of the Forum. In 2023, he attended the meetings of all 15 events of the “Arctic: Territory of Dialogue” program. The article deals with issues that were widely discussed at SPIEF-2023, related to the prospects and opportunities for international cooperation, social, economic and investment development of the Arctic regions, Arctic biodiversity, development of specially protected natural areas, northern cities, human resources, scientific and educa-tional potential of the Arctic, branding of the northern regions, digitalization of the northern territories. All these topics are widely covered by the CAS IE RAS scientific group on a regular basis. The author also analyses the development of the tourism, culture, and film industries in the Arctic with a focus on the promotion of Arctic topics in the media. Speakers of the thematic sections emphasized the increasing role of the Arctic in the social and economic development of the Russian Federation, noted the negative consequences of limiting the activities of the Arctic Council. The forum was held under the slogan “Sovereign development is the basis of a just world. Let's join forces for the sake of future generations”.

A multi-level analysis of the relationship between formal institutions and ambitious entrepreneurship: The moderating role of economic development

Prior research predominantly focuses on institutional drivers of different levels of entrepreneurship across countries instead of specific types of entrepreneurship that can create considerable economic impact. In contrast, we investigate which formal institutions (i.e., government integrity, regulatory efficiency, and trade freedom) affect ambitious entrepreneurship (AE). Ambitious entrepreneurs are both opportunity-driven and innovative. Moreover, we introduce economic development as a boundary condition of these relationships. Using a multi-level research design and analyzing data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) with 2,121,002 individuals from 101 countries, we find that regulatory efficiency and trade freedom positively affect AE. Surprisingly, government integrity negatively impacts AE, but higher economic development mitigates this negative relationship. Our study informs the discussion on the nexus between comparative international entrepreneurship, institutions, and economic development.

The Development and Enlightenment of Brazil’s Manaus Free Trade Zone

As an effective tool for promoting international trade and economic development, free trade zones have received widespread attention and application worldwide. As the first free trade zone in Brazil, the Manaus Free Trade Zone has achieved significant results in promoting the economic development of Brazil and the Amazon region since its establishment in 1967. This article analyzes the development process of the Manaus Free Trade Zone, explores its policy framework, legal environment, and driving factors of related economic activities, and proposes to optimize the policy environment, strengthen environmental protection Inspiration from four aspects: promoting open cooperation and highlighting innovation leadership.

The Digital Economy and Carbon Intensity: Empirical Evidence from Chinese Cities

This study examines how the development of the digital economy affects urban carbon intensity. Using a sample of 281 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2021, we employ principal component analysis and entropy weighting analysis to assess the comprehensive level of digital economic development. Various models, such as benchmark regression, variable substitution, interactive fixed effects, robust standard errors with double clustering, and instrumental variables, are employed to empirically analyze the impact and mechanisms of digital economic development on carbon intensity in multiple Chinese cities. The results indicate that the development of the digital economy can reduce urban carbon intensity. Based on these findings, this paper puts forward policy recommendations to promote digital economic development and reduce carbon intensity, including increasing efforts in digital economic development and related infrastructure construction, narrowing the regional disparities in digital economic development, improving regulations and systems related to low-carbon development in the digital economy, and adapting to international economic and political development trends, in order to contribute to the achievement of the "dual carbon" goals.

Estimating the impact of container port throughput on employment: an analysis for African countries with seaports

Ports play a significant role in facilitating international trade and economic development, serving as vital gateways for the movement of goods across the continent and beyond. As global trade volumes continue to rise, efficient port operations hold the potential to not only enhance economic growth but also contribute significantly to job creation across various sectors of the economy. This paper examines the impact of container port throughput on employment in Africa and further tests whether causality runs from employment to container port throughput. To do so, we use a sample of 27 African countries with seaport and data spanning the period from 2010 to 2020 for the analysis. The system- Generalized Method of Moments (SGMM) estimation technique is used as the estimation strategy. We use service, industrial, and total employment percentages of the total population as proxies for employment while annual container throughput measured in Twenty foots Equivalent Units (TEUs) is used as an indicator for port throughput. Based on the empirical results, we establish a positive significant effect of port throughput on employment in Africa. We further show that bidirectional causality exists between port throughput and employment in Africa. Following these findings, we recommend policies that increase port throughput in Africa.

FORESIGHT AS A TOOL FOR RESPONSIBLE PUBLIC MANAGEMENT AND ADJUSTMENT OF INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC POLICY IN THE FOCUS OF GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT PROBLEMS

The purpose of the article is to study strategic long-term planning tools that allow timely identification of the latest risks, challenges and threats to international economic development that make it difficult to solve global problems that are a consequence of failures in the coordination of international economic policy. It has been determined that strategic forecasting allows politicians to increase the efficiency of government decision-making by identifying opportunities and threats that may arise in the coming years and decades, and also involves the development of possible strategies to counter them by taking into account the characteristics of the identified trends. The phenomenon of the new economy is characterized. The influence of technological development on the asymmetry of international economic development is determined. It has been established that the problems of international economic development in foresight strategizing include geopolitical rivalry, resource confrontation, energy dependence, deglobalization, disintegration processes, trade fragmentation, gaps in value and supply chains, reinstitutionalization of the system of international economic relations, recession, population aging, unemployment. Foresight forecasting tools that are not aimed at predicting a single “correct future” include: analysis of long-term trends and uncertainties; horizon scanning); scenario planning; shaping a normative future; political games; futures wheels; causal multilevel analysis. Research into long-term trends and uncertainties reveals key factors in different possible futures. The comprehensive observation carried out allows us to identify risks for the macroeconomic environment and proactively formulate a pool of measures to minimize the destructive impact of instability on socio-economic development. Improving foresight research as a critical element of strategic forecasting for solving problems of long-term development affects both theoretical aspects (conceptual approach, conceptual apparatus) and applied aspects (technologies and methods of development) of the development and use of this tool. Strategic planning allows you to develop adequate tools to achieve goals and proactively respond to the challenges of modern development, minimizing costs and compensating for the losses that arise for this reason, which lead to the loss of existing competitive advantages. The difference between forecasts and foresights is noted: forecasts are usually associated with uncontrollable events, while foresights most often deal with events and processes that are clearly controllable, therefore they assess the probability of not only one or another outcome of future events, but also the adoption of certain strategic and management decisions. The ability to distinguish normative approaches (what we want) from pragmatic approaches (what we should) is an important component of thinking in terms of alternative futures

Strategic determinants of international economic activity development in the context of digitization

The article highlights the main strategic determinants and drivers that contribute to the development of international economic activity in the context of digitization. It synthesizes a range of factors and forces that encourage the adoption and integration of digital technologies and practices across various sectors of the global economy. It is demonstrated that the driving forces of digitization in international economic activity are interconnected and reinforce each other, while technological progress shapes a new paradigm of consumer behavior and expectations, stimulating demand for further technological innovations. The main problems and challenges faced by enterprises in the global market in the context of digitization are analyzed and summarized. In the digital age, it is important to have an open mind and be prepared for constant change. Enterprises that successfully integrate digital technologies into their strategy can gain a significant competitive advantage in the international market. However, this requires continuous improvement and readiness for innovation. Convergence of Export-Import Flows and Economic Development in the Central and Southeast European Union

The study presents the long- and short-term relationship between international trade flows (exports/imports) and economic development (GDP) as the main driver of international economic trade. Panel data econometric models emphasize the fixed effects of the eight Central and Southeast European Union countries. The cointegration condition is met to identify the existence of long-run equilibrium. The error correction model is the iterative short-run adjustment solution to the long-run relationship for both exports and imports. Regional trade convergence is achieved by observing the cointegration of the analyzed variables; it is described by their average levels for all countries.

Study on the Development Trends and Strategies of International Economy and Trade under the New Situation

Abstract In today’s increasingly globalized world, trade between countries has become more interconnected, and international trade has emerged as the primary driver of economic development for all nations. This paper proposes a standard trade model for the new situation using the Dixit-Stiglitz model. Starting from the consumer’s point of view, the two-stage maximum method is adopted. Using the Lagrange function, the demand utility function of consumer preferences is processed, and the model optimization scheme is deduced. The ARMA model is used to predict the volume of merchandise foreign trade, and the prediction range includes autoregressive and moving average processes. The indicators are used to evaluate the smoothness of the series within the sample period. A suitable sample of international trade data is selected. The results of the analysis are as follows: in the logistic autoregressive analysis test, the significance of all factors, except for the language and religion factors, passes the significance test of 0.001, and at the same time, the model goodness-of-fit is greater than 0.1, ranging from 0.115 to 0.175. In the analysis of the spatial evolution pattern of international economic trade and trade dynamic development, the spatial Gini coefficients of the first category of goods in 2000, 2014, and 2019 and the third category in 2000 are 0.4306, 0.4717, 0.4956, and 0.4673, respectively, which are lower than 0.5, showing a more balanced evolution pattern.

ASEAN's Role and Future Economic Cooperation Under the US-China Rivalry: The Quest for Effective Democratic Leadership

Amid the US-China rivalry, the ASEAN role and future economic cooperation are uncertain. Deploying a qualitative approach based on documents as sources of data, this study aims to suggest democratic leadership as an intervening variable and examines future possibilities of the ASEAN role and economic cooperation under the US-China rivalry. There are three ASEAN's role future possibilities under the US-China rivalry: the honest broker (best-case scenario), a partial mediator (moderate-case scenario), and a dysfunctional organisation (worst-case scenario). The gradations linearly demonstrated an interlinked connection between the cooperation engagement and outcome possibilities. This study found that the best-case prospect, "an honest broker" could be materialised by implementing democratic leadership, an equally distributed, empowered, egalitarian decision-making kind of leadership determined by willingness, capacity, and acceptance. It could optimally encourage internal economic development and effectively manage cooperation with both parties through the distribution of responsibility, group member empowerment, and assisting all members in decision-making.

Busan's Paradiplomacy: Aspiring to be the World's Premier Film City

This study explored the image transformation of Busan, South Korea, from an industrial hub to a globally recognized City of Film. By employing a paradiplomacy framework, the research examined how Busan utilized BIFF as both a cultural event and a strategic tool for international diplomacy, economic development, and city branding. This qualitative research focused on gathering data largely through a comprehensive evaluation of scientific literature, including books and papers relevant to the case study. The analyses delved into the evolution of the BIFF event and its significant role in rebranding Busan from a declining industrial city to the first "City of Film" in Asia, a title bestowed by UNESCO. The study highlighted how the festival had successfully stimulated local economic growth, bolstered creative industries, and facilitated cultural exchange. The result demonstrated that BIFF had been pivotal in repositioning Busan as a significant player in the international film industry and a vibrant cultural destination. In conclusion, Busan's status as Asia's "City of Film" should be sustained, and the ongoing significance of integrating cultural initiatives with wider urban development strategies should also be emphasized.

International Borders, Integration and Economic Development: Evidence from Argentina

This paper analyzes the effects of international borders and of trade agreements on subnational development in Argentina. The identification strategy leverages the Mercosur trade services agreement in 2005, and the different proximity of the districts to the international border with member countries. Two main outcomes are analyzed: economic growth and inequality. For this purpose, an annual panel of districts covering more than two decades (1992-2013) is used. The results show that the presence of an international border has a negative and significant effect on the economic growth of border districts (-0.14 percentage points of GDP annually) but also contributes to reducing inequality compared to districts without a border. On the other hand, a commercial integration agreement tends to partially offset the negative effects on economic growth (+0.04 percentage points of GDP annually). The results of the paper are relevant in terms of trade and development policy recommendations: deepening integration agreements constitutes a potential mechanism to boost growth in the poorest regions and thus reduce subnational disparities.

OPENNESS TO TRADE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSITION ECONOMIES

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the connection between countries' openness to international trade and economic development, i.e. the standard of living of итс citizens. Given that this is a frequently researched question among economists with still open conclusions, research on this topic always sheds some new light and contributes to new conclusions on that aspect. The methodology used in the paper is a correlation analysis, where we compared different measures of openness with economic development measured by GDP per capita expressed in purchasing power parity. The sample on which we performed the analysis is 16 countries, some of which have completed the transition process like the countries of so-called New Europe, and some are still stuck in transition, such as our countries of our region. Each of these countries continues to be subject of an analysis of transition progress in the EBRD’s Transition Report. The results clearly show a strong and positive correlation between openness to international trade flows and economic development, with this relationship being stronger if we look at export flows than import flows. The conclusion is that openness has no alternative, and that the countries of the region must strengthen their export base and export performance in order to reduce the gap in relation to the countries of New Europe, for which we can easily say that have successfully completed the transition process.

In addition, it is necessary to strengthen the investment risk awareness of enterprises, guide the establishment of risk monitoring and management departments for enterprises engaged in foreign direct investment, and require industry associations to play their due role in risk control, and ensure information exchange and sharing among enterprises. The new trends in the development of the international economy and trade industry can keep the strategic planning at the national level forward-looking, promote international multilateral cooperation, break the barriers of trade barriers, and promote trade cooperation between friendly countries and international economic development.
