Research on coupling optimization of carbon emissions and carbon leakage in international construction projects

Due to the rapid economic development of globalization and the intensification of economic and trade exchanges, cross-international and regional carbon emissions have become increasingly severe. Governments worldwide establish laws and regulations to protect their countries' environmental impact. Therefore, selecting robustness evaluation models and metrics is an urgent research topic. This article proves the reliability and scientific of the assessment data through literature coupling evaluation, multidisciplinary coupling mathematical model and international engineering case analysis. The innovation of this project's research lies in the comprehensive analysis of the complex coupling effects of various discrete data and uncertainty indicators on the research model across international projects and how to model and evaluate interactive effects accurately. This article provides scientific measurement standards and data support for governments worldwide to formulate carbon tariffs and carbon emission policies. Case analysis data shows that the carbon emission ratio of exporting and importing countries is 0.577:100; the carbon trading quota ratio is 32.50:100.

Using fuzzy cognitive maps to explore the dynamic impact on management team resilience in international construction projects

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the relationship between individual-level psychological resources and team resilience in the context of expatriate project management teams. It seeks to understand how personal psychological resources contribute to team resilience and explore the dynamic evolution mechanism of team resilience. The goal is to enhance team resilience among expatriates in a BANI (Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, and Incomprehensible) world, where organizations face volatile and uncertain conditions.Design/methodology/approachAn online survey was applied for data collection, and 315 valid samples from Chinese expatriates in international construction projects were utilized for data analysis. A structural equation model (SEM) examines the relationships between personal psychological resources and team resilience. The study identifies five psychological factors influencing team resilience: Employee Resilience, Cross-cultural Adjustment, Self-efficacy, Social Support, and Team Climate. The hypothesized relationships are validated through the SEM analysis. Additionally, a fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) is constructed to explore the dynamic mechanism of team resilience formation based on the results of the SEM.FindingsThe SEM analysis confirms that employee resilience, cross-cultural adjustment, and team climate positively impact team resilience. Social support and self-efficacy also have positive effects on team climate. Moreover, team climate is found to fully mediate the relationship between self-efficacy and team resilience, as well as between social support and team resilience. The FCM model provides further insights into the dynamic evolution of team resilience, highlighting the varying impact effects of antecedents during the team resilience development process and the effectiveness of different combinations of intervention strategies.Originality/valueThis study contributes to understanding team resilience by identifying the psychological factors influencing team resilience in expatriate project management teams. The findings emphasize the importance of social support and team climate in promoting team resilience. Interventions targeting team climate are found to facilitate the rapid development of team resilience. In contrast, interventions for social support are necessary for sustainable, long-term high levels of team resilience. Based on the dynamic simulation results, strategies for cultivating team resilience through external intervention and internal adjustment are proposed, focusing on social support and team climate. Implementing these strategies can enhance project management team resilience and improve the core competitiveness of contractors in the BANI era.

A simulation-based risk interaction network model for risk management in international construction projects

The inherent complexity in International Construction Projects (ICPs) brings forth the intricate interactions between risks, invalidating the risk analysis under the conventional perception of independent risks. The diverse phases of ICPs feature the temporal dynamics of risks and interactions, exacerbating the challenge of pinpointing critical risks. This study aims to model how the risks are interconnected and amplified by proposing an ICP risk management framework, in which the project phase-based Risk Interaction Network (RIN) is constructed. An integrated index is designed to evaluate each risk’s criticality and discern key risks within a two-part procedure, where the simulation-based model estimates risk sensitivity to predecessor risks and captures the stochasticity of risk occurring, and network analysis gauges risk spread power on the entire network. An example of an application is provided to illustrate the utility of the proposed framework.

Adaptation of corporate model of ukrainian aircraft product life cycle to the international methodology of systems engineering

Problems. Under the present-day conditions, the preservation of competences of Ukrainian aircraft construction enterprises will be determined by the possibility of enterprises attracting to participation in international cooperation programs and projects. But this is possible only on the condition of prior harmonization of the product development methodology adopted in Ukrainian aircraft construction to that used in the international aircraft construction projects. Purose. The main goal of this article is to determine the ability and ways of adapting the corporate model of life cycle of aircraft engineering projects by Ukrainian aircraft construction enterprises to modern global aircraft construction practices. Implementation methodology. The research methodology predicted the identification of the main modern trends in the field of system engineering for the creation of a science-intensive product, as well as the analysis of concepts of presenting the life cycle of complex technical systems in international regulatory documents, industry regulations, guidelines and other information sources. Criteria for perspective of using the identified informational and normative sources as close analogues for the development of one's own corporate model of life cycle of an aircraft construction product were identified. On the basis of the criterion analysis of researched concepts of the life cycle of complex technical systems representing, the requirements were formed, which formed the basis of the concept of one's own corporate model of life cycle of the aircraft construction product.  The results. The result of conducted research was the proposed concept of a corporate model of the life cycle of an aircraft construction product manufactured in Ukraine, which takes into account the international experience and best practices of leading aircraft construction companies, including focusing on the experience accumulated by domestic aircraft manufacturers. Conclusions. According to the results of analysis of advanced world practices in the field of creating a science-intensive product, an own corporate model of the life cycle of an aircraft product manufactured in Ukraine was proposed. In the future, on the basis of this model, a system for creating an aircraft product can be built and developed, which will be harmonized with existing world practices and will allow the domestic aircraft construction enterprises to fight for participation in international programs and projects.

Critical factors affecting Chinese construction expatriates’ living and working conditions in Thailand: a Delphi study

Expatriation management is a key concern in international construction projects, where the living and working conditions of expatriates can have a significant impact on project success. This study investigates the critical factors affecting Chinese construction expatriates’ living and working conditions in Thailand. Through a three-round Delphi technique involving twelve experts and in-depth semi-structured interviews with eight construction experts with extensive overseas experience to validate, six critical factors were identified for each living and working condition. Language and Covid-19-related (during the investigating period) factors were the most dominant factors affecting the living conditions, while technical standards, technology, and competition were critical factors for working conditions. The study categorizes the critical factors into five groups and provides suggestions for improvement. This research is the first to investigate the specific factors affecting Chinese construction expatriates in Thailand and offers insights and management directions for the expatriation process, particularly for the growing number of Chinese construction companies expanding internationally. The findings also serve as a valuable reference for future research on this topic.

Research on the risk transmission mechanism of international construction projects based on complex network.

The risk transmission process between international construction projects largely contributes to the dilemma of risk management of international construction projects. Firstly, this paper adopts methods such as literature review and brainstorming to identify the risks in international construction projects from all aspects and all stages. Connections between risks is built by the Delphi method and further construct the international construction project risk network. Combined with "ucinet", a network visualization analysis tool, overall feature parameters and local feature parameters are presented for analysis as the focus. Starting from this, the risk transmission in complex construction projects is analyzed to identify key risks and transmission relationships and reveal inherent laws of risk transmission. Accordingly, when formulating risk prevention strategies for international engineering projects, it is proposed that measures to curb risk transmission should be effectively adopted from both key risks and their transmission relationships.

Risk Assessment for International Construction Projects

International projects are inherently exposed to unforeseeable and complex risk scenarios. This study aimed to assess and identify the critical risk factors in international contracting projects, based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method. The most compelling risks that are faced by the construction firms in the Afghanistan market are determined primarily by meta-analysis. According to the data obtained from this analysis, the priorities of the risks and the degree of severity between each other are determined by using the AHP method. This research enhances the current body of knowledge about the possible encountered threats for investing the high-risk construction markets. The findings of the study may also help contractors to develop strategies "to bid or no-bid decisions" for high-risk markets.

Exploration of French-Chinese Translation Methods of Electrical Engineering Terminology Using Online Image-Text Retrieval Mode

With the incessant propulsion of the Open Door Policy, which is related to the consolidation of international collaborative partnerships, an increasing number of Chinese companies are moving toward cooperating countries to participate in infrastructure construction, employing a win-win strategy in favor of the people and governments of both countries. Among the cooperation domains, our country’s electrical companies have achieved a series of remarkable results in the international Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) project market with their outstanding business capabilities and technical advantages. Nevertheless, some shortcomings cannot be overlooked, the most notable of which appears to be the impediment associated with engineering translation, which has always been an obsession among translators of Chinese companies. Taking the transmission line project in the Republic of Madagascar as an example, an analysis of French-Chinese translation methods of electrical engineering terminology in the field of the transmission line is carried out.

A web-based system to determine risk of investment in international rail construction projects

Manual evaluation of investment risk make results and solutions are not timely. The objective of the study is to explore intelligent risk data collecting and risk early warning of international rail construction. First, this study has identified risk variables by content mining. Second, risk thresholds are calculated by the quantile method based on data from 2010 to A.D. 2019. Third, this study has developed risk early warning system by the gray system theory model, the matter-element extension method and the entropy weight method. Fourth, the risk early warning system is verified using Nigeria coastal railway project in Abuja. This study found that: (1) the framework of the developed risk warning system contains a software and hardware infrastructure layer, a data collection layer, an application support layer, and an application layer. (2) 37 investment risk variables are recognized; (3) 12 risk variables thresholds intervals are not equally divided between 0 and 1, the others are evenly distributed; (4) based on the application of Nigeria coastal railway project in Abuja, the system verification results are consistent with real situations, which is shown that risk early warning system is reasonable and feasible. These findings offer a good reference for intelligent risk management.

Investigating the risk of international construction projects using artificial-fuzzy neural networks technique

The purpose of implementing the risk management process is to identify and root the causes of each risk, analyze it, plan response methods and assign risks to appropriate factors, in order to effectively control the preferred risks. This article aims to analyze risk management in construction projects using fuzzy artificial neural networks in the form of a descriptive-survey study and in the category of applied research. Data analysis was done using MATLAB software using MATLAB software to ensure the soundness of the method and to implement project risk management in international construction projects, and the results indicate success in terms of risk.

Hardness, strength and abrasivity of rocks: Correlations and predictions

AbstractSince ancient times, rocks and their geomechanical and mineralogical properties have played a fundamental role for realising construction and infrastructure projects. Workability and excavability of the material itself are still decisive factors controlling tool wear and advancement rates. In engineering geology, standardised tests and analyses related to the strength, hardness, abrasivity and mineralogical composition are commonly conducted in this context. The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), CERCHAR Abrasivity Index (CAI) and equivalent quartz content are widely used parameters for such an assessment, in order to estimate and predict drillability and associated wear of drill bits, cutting discs or chisels. In this article, the correlations between strength, abrasivity and mineral content of various rock types are investigated. The concept of hardness in geotechnics and engineering geology is elaborated in greater detail, shedding light on hardness definitions, testing methods and how hardness parameters are interrelated. Under the aspect that the CAI shows a good correlation with the Mohs hardness commonly used in mineralogy, a novel approach for estimating the CAI is presented. It is suggested that the CAI of a rock can be estimated within 50 % of the actual value, if its UCS exceeds »60 MPa. On the data basis of various rock types analysed from national and international construction projects, the potential and limitations of this method are discussed.

Ecological technology of green building in the initial stage of design based on BIM technology

At present, the whole world is faced with a common topic, that is, the contradiction between energy consumption, serious fog, the continuous rise of PM2.5, plastic waste, white pollution and other environmental pollution and the worldwide energy shortage. In this paper, aiming at the international new town construction project in Xigu District, Lanzhou, Revit software is used to establish a physical model for data integration and integrated management of the geometric information of building space, functional information of building space, building materials and other related data information of the project, and an analysis model for the scheme design of the residential building of the project is obtained, and ecological and technical factors such as energy consumption analysis, lighting analysis, indoor lighting analysis, solar radiation analysis, shading and thermal comfort analysis of the project location are analyzed. The research shows that the thermal performance, energy consumption simulation analysis and hourly heat gain/loss analysis of the envelope in the coldest weather in the local area show that the heat conduction of the envelope is small under the three conditions of structural design (case A), standard limit (case B) and hypothetical construction (case C), which indicates that the solar radiant heat is mainly related to the material performance of the external window when the heat transfer coefficient of the roof is close, and the heat gain and loss between regions has little change.

Effects of international nuclear power plants construction projects on sustainable economic development of emerging economies

The solution to the problem of the global energy transition requires re-consideration of the role of nuclear energy in the energy mix of the future. The importance of nuclear energy in the global energy complex seems to increase across the world, especially due to the rising prices for fossil energy resources. A number of developing countries around the world are considering programs for the construction of nuclear power plants of large or small capacity, offered by foreign partners. This trend emphasizes the relevance of analyzing the economic effects of the development of nuclear energy in developing countries that are already successfully using nuclear energy technologies to assess the prospects for international trade in nuclear energy technologies. The article discusses the contribution of nuclear energy to the economic growth of developing countries based on the analysis of the direct and indirect economic effects of the development of nuclear energy in developing countries. The article identifies the areas of this impact and determines the main problems and features of the introduction of nuclear energy into the energy complex of a developing country. The paper concludes on the significant impact of nuclear energy on the socio-economic development of the country and the important role of developing countries in determining the positions of nuclear energy in the energy complex of the green world economy.

How cultural intelligence affects expatriate effectiveness in international construction projects

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the influence mechanism of expatriates' cultural intelligence (CQ) on expatriate effectiveness (task performance and premature return intention), identifying work engagement as a mediator and cultural distance as a boundary condition.Design/methodology/approachDrawing on the conservation of resource theory and the person–environment fit (P–E fit) theory, a moderated mediation model is built. Working with a sample of 303 international construction expatriates collected by snowball sampling, the hypotheses are tested by using the structural equation model analysis.FindingsWork engagement partially mediates the relationship between expatriates' CQ and task performance, as well as fully mediates the relationship between expatriates' CQ and premature return intention. Cultural distance moderates the positive relationship between CQ and work engagement, as well as moderates the mediating effects of work engagement.Research limitations/implicationsThe impacts of potential moderators (e.g. work–family conflict and organizational culture) on the relationship between CQ and expatriate effectiveness have not been considered in this study.Practical implicationsThis study is useful for international construction firms to optimize the allocation of human resources.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the expatriate literature by adding empirical evidence to explain the influence mechanism of expatriates' CQ on expatriate effectiveness.

Incentive mechanisms for managing local subcontractors in international construction projects

In the domain of international construction projects, managing supply chains presents distinct challenges due to the intricate task of coordinating multiple stakeholders within diverse cultural, economic, and regulatory contexts. Prior research highlights the significance of incentive mechanisms and collaborative procurement practices, yet the effectiveness of these strategies in augmenting performance for international projects has not been extensively examined. This investigation explores the effects of financial and non-financial incentives on the performance of global construction projects, with a focus on the mediating role of cooperation. Data were gathered from Chinese international contractors and local suppliers and subsequently analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling. The results reveal two separate pathways of influence. Firstly, financial incentives exhibited substantial direct and indirect impacts on project performance; secondly, while non-financial incentives did not directly affect project performance, they significantly impacted cooperation levels, which in turn mediated the relationship between non-financial incentives and project performance. This study provides essential perspectives for managing international construction projects, emphasizing the critical need for the combined application of financial and non-financial incentives to foster cooperation and ultimately achieve superior project outcomes.

Impact of External Risks on International Construction Projects Success: Evidence from Commonwealth Caribbean Islands

Since risks on international construction show region to region variation, the present study investigates the impact of external risks on international construction project (ICP) success and the relationships between them, from the perspective of construction professionals working in the Commonwealth Caribbean Islands (CCI) states. After a literature review, a survey questionnaire was designed with the input of a small group of experts. An instrument was tested and then sent to the construction professionals working in the CCI. Seventy valid surveys collected were processed using the structural equation model (SEM). The results suggest that the reason why CCI is an attractive region for construction enterprises looking into developing countries is because they do not support a direct impact of external risks on the project success, contrary to the findings in other studies on developing regions. The SEM confirmed that global risks influence economic risks, while economic risks influence legal risks and, in this region, influence the social risks. Results obtained help to address the knowledge gap for the ICP risks for the Caribbean region. The study will help the firms and the professionals looking to venture into the CCI or other regions with similar characteristics to create their risk management plan.

Research and Discussion On the Cultivation of Master's Degree in Civil Engineering Under the Background of "One Belt and One Road"

The implementation of the national “One Belt, One Road” strategy has provided new ideas and new directions for the cultivation of masters in civil engineering in China. This paper expounds the importance of the cultivation of masters in civil engineering under the “One Belt and One Road” initiative, and then proposes the challenges faced by the cultivation of masters in civil engineering under the “One Belt and One Road” initiative. The problems include unclear training objectives, unreasonable curriculum settings, and the inability of undergraduate and master education resources to meet the needs of society. Finally, the training measures for masters of civil engineering under the background of the “Belt and Road Initiative” are put forward: taking the international market as the guide, establishing a scientific training mechanism, and integrating teacher resources. , deepen the curriculum reform, strengthen exchanges with universities in countries along the “Belt and Road”, establish and improve the evaluation system for master’s degree in civil engineering, help Chinese enterprises to participate in international construction projects, and realize the great feat of “Belt and Road”.
