Introduction: Breast cancer remains one of the most prevalent cancers globally, specifically the most common in females. The use of artificial intelligence promises to contribute to early diagnosis through imaging. Previously, the landscape and evolution of this scientific production have not been described. Methods: Cross-sectional bibliometric study using Scopus as the data source. The bibliometrix package in R was employed for calculating bibliometric indicators and visualizing the results. Results: 1292 documents published between 1989 and 2024 were selected. 75.3% (n=973) were articles with primary data, followed by 16.2% (n=209) corresponding to reviews. An international collaboration rate of 26.5% was identified, with an annual production growth of 10.78%. It was observed that risk classification through screening, digital breast tomosynthesis, transfer learning, segmentation, and feature selection were the most commonly used keywords. In the last five years, deep learning and mammography have been the most popular topics. International collaboration has been led by the United States, China, and the United Kingdom. Conclusions: A notable growth in global research on the use of artificial intelligence in breast cancer imaging for detection was identified, particularly since the 2010s, primarily through the publication of articles with primary data. The relationship between artificial intelligence and imaging for breast cancer diagnosis has focused on risk and prediction.

Port economics, management and policy studies (2009–2020): a bibliometric analysis

This paper analyses published research in port economics, policy and management (port studies) based on examining all relevant academic journal papers published from 2009 to 2020. The systematic review of all 1227 papers relies on quantitative and qualitative bibliometric tools to reveal the structures of the research community (i.e., authors’ country of affiliation, number of authors involved, and international collaboration rates) and the themes and content of port research (i.e., research approaches, units of analysis, ports and commodities examined, levels of research localisation, port markets commonly (not) studied). It also presents a taxonomy of port studies based on a content classification of the themes and sub-themes examined. The paper concludes with a citation analysis that reveals the coherence of port research. The analysis is enriched by comparing the findings with similar studies focusing on the 1997–2008 timeframe. This unique monitoring of a period that expands over a quarter of a century offers a valuable tool for better understanding the research landscape and deciding directions for future research. From a theoretical perspective, the study provides evidence of the rapid transformation of port economics, policy and management into a mature research field.

A half-century of global collaboration in science and the “Shrinking World”

Abstract Recent decades have witnessed a dramatic shift in the cross-border collaboration mode of researchers, with countries increasingly cooperating and competing with one another. It is crucial for leaders in academia and policy to understand the full extent of international research collaboration, their country’s position within it, and its evolution over time. However, evidence for such world-scale dynamism is still scarce. This paper provides unique evidence of how international collaboration clusters have formed and evolved over the past 50 years across various scientific publications, using data from OpenAlex, a large-scale open bibliometrics platform launched in 2022. I first examine how the global presence of top-tier countries has changed in 15 natural science disciplines over time, as measured by publication volumes and international collaboration rates. Notably, I observe that the United States and China have been rapidly moving closer together for decades but began moving apart after 2019. I then perform a hierarchical clustering to analyze and visualize the international collaboration clusters for each discipline and period. Finally, I provide quantitative evidence of a “Shrinking World” of research collaboration at a global scale over the past half-century. My results provide valuable insights into the big picture of past, present, and future international collaboration.

Bibliometric analysis and description of research trends on transforaminal full-endoscopic approach on the spine for the last two-decades.

The study aims to assess the current development status of transforaminal full-endoscopic spine surgery (TFES) by exploring and analyzing the published literature to obtain an overview of this field and discover the evolution and emerging topics that are underrepresented. Using Bibliometrix, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer, we analyzed the bibliometric data selected from the Web of Science Core Collection between January 2002 and November 2022. The descriptive and evaluative analyses of authors, institutes, countries, journals, keywords, and references are compiled. The quantity of research productivity was measured by the number of publications that were published. A quality indicator was thought to be the number of citations. In the bibliometric analysis of authors, areas, institutes, and references, we calculated and ranked the research impact by various metrics, such as the h-index and m-index. A total of 628 articles were identified in the field of TFES by the 18.73% annual growth rate of research on the subject from 2002 to 2022, constituting the documents are by 1961 authors affiliated with 661 institutions in 42 countries or regions and published in 117 journals. The USA (n = 0.20) has the highest international collaboration rate, South Korea has the highest H-index value (h = 33), and China is ranked as the most productive country (n = 348). Brown univ., Tongji univ., and Wooridul Spine represented the most productive institutes ranked by the number of publications. Wooridul Spine Hospital demonstrated the highest quality of paper publication. The Pain Physician had the highest h-index (n = 18), and the most cited journal with the earliest publication year in the area of FEDS is Spine (t = 1855). The bibliometric study showed a growing trend of research on transforaminal full-endoscopic spine surgery over the past 20years. It has shown a significant increase in the number of authors, institutions, and international collaborating countries. South Korea, the United States, and China dominate the related areas. A growing body of evidence has revealed that TFES has leapfrogged from its infancy stage and gradually entered a mature development stage.

Assessing the Research Performance of the Iranian Medical Academics and Universities: A Bibliometric Analysis.

Implementing bibliometric indicators is the most prominent way to quantify the current status of research performance. This study aimed to map out the research performance of Iranian medical academics and universities in 2020 and determine its progress from 2016. Data were extracted from the Iranian scientometric information database and universities' scientometric information database. Then, the data were analyzed to provide descriptive statistics of bibliometric indicators. Besides, the association between the research productivity of academics or universities with their background characteristics was investigated using Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, and chi-square tests. Iranian medical academics had extensive research productivity from 2016 to 2020, leading to 2.5-fold increase in their median number of papers. The research productivity was heterogeneous among the academics, with an H-index ranging from 0 to 98, and a median of 4. The research productivity was different by gender, academic position, general field of study, and academic degree. The class 1 universities had a higher quantity in research performance; however, there was no difference in quality-related indices comprising citations per paper ratio and high impact publication rate (SJR Q1) among different university classes. The median international collaboration rate has followed a growing trend in recent years and was 17% in 2020. There is a remarkable growth in the research productivity of Iranian academics and universities. Iranian research community historically had rare international research collaborations; however, promising growth is shown in this regard. To maintain the growth in research productivity, the country should increase research and development expenditure, address gender disparities, supply universities that are lagging behind, facilitate further international collaboration, and support national journals to be indexed in the international citation databases.

Does the COVID-19 pandemic derail US-China collaboration on carbon neutrality research? A survey

The COVID-19 pandemic has seriously impacted scientific research activities, especially international cooperation in scientific research. Using bibliometric methods and scientific knowledge graph software, and by calculating collaboration indicators such as international collaboration rates, this work conducts a comprehensive review of carbon neutrality publications in the Web of Science database before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to explore whether the COVID-19 pandemic derail China-U.S. collaboration on carbon neutrality research. The results show that (i) During the COVID-19 pandemic, more extensive research on carbon neutrality was carried out around the world, with China and the United States leading the way in carbon neutrality scientific output. (ii) Following the outbreak of the COVID-19, the global center of global carbon neutrality shifted from the United States to China. (iii) During the COVID-19 pandemic, research ties between China and the United States strengthened. The number of joint publications on carbon neutrality between China and the United States has greatly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to those before. (iv) The proportion of China-U.S. cooperation in China's international cooperation has decreased, while it is the opposite for the United States. At the end of the article, we put forward relevant suggestions for realizing the sustainable development goals of climate change in the post-epidemic era for policymakers' reference. This paper provides important insights into the theoretical research of scholars in the carbon neutrality field.

Between panic and motivation: did the first wave of COVID-19 affect scientific publishing in Mediterranean countries?

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that began in the winter of 2020, all communities and activities globally have been positively or negatively affected. This scientometric study raises an interesting question concerning whether the volume and characteristics of scientific publishing in all disciplines in 23 Mediterranean countries have been impacted by the pandemic and whether variations in the cumulative totals of COVID-19 cases have resulted in significant changes in this context. The Scopus database and SciVal tool supplied the necessary data for the years targeted for comparison (2019 and 2020), and the annual growth rates and differences were computed. The study used the Mann–Whitney test to examine the significance of the differences between the two years and the Spearman and Kendall correlation tests to evaluate the effect of the number of infections on these differences for all aspects of scientific performance. The findings demonstrated that the COVID-19 pandemic served as a powerful incentive, and the Mediterranean region experienced considerable differences in the volume and features of publications during this crisis. The most substantial implications were the significant growth from 3.1 to 9.4% in productivity and the increases in the annual growth rates of international collaboration, by 12% for the collaboration among Mediterranean countries and 10% for collaboration with the top ten epidemic countries. It was also proven that some characteristics of the publications were positively correlated with the total number of infections. This investigation can help university leaders and decision-makers in higher education and research institutions in these countries make decisions and implement measures to bridge the gaps and motivate researchers in all fields to conduct more research during this ongoing pandemic.

Science in West Africa after the First Regional STI Policy: A Global View (2011-2020)

The West African countries adopted in 2012 a five-year STI policy document that should have helped States to master all science fields required for the emergence of a scientific community able to compete and exchange with the best research teams worldwide. This paper aims at measuring the scientific productivity of West Africa after the first regional science, technology and innovation policy and compared to the period 2001-2010. West African countries’ scientific data were collected from Web of Science and analysed with regard to the annual production, the total production, growth rate, relative growth index, growth index, international collaboration rate, partner countries and their shares. Over the decade 2011-2020, the region produced more than three times its output over the decade 2001-2010. The international collaboration rate is still higher. The major partner countries are the same as over the previous decade, either in the world or on the African continent. Nigeria is still the local giant with more than half of the regional output; it is followed by Ghana, Senegal and Burkina Faso. The dynamics of production are not the same at country level. West African scientific production is growing more rapidly than the one of the World. Within the region, not all countries have the same volume of production or the same growth speed. Nigeria by far is the local giant, however Ghana is the one that imparts production speed to the region. Taken into account the skewness of the scientific production per country, the study proposes in-depth analysis of the 15 countries grouped in five clusters as follows: small producers (8 countries), lower intermediate producers (3 countries), upper intermediate producers (2 countries), higher producer (1 country) and highest producer (1 country).

Analysis Of Articles on Evidence-Based Medicine

The aim of this study is to conduct a bibliometric analysis of articles on evidence-based medicine. Using Bibliometrix and VOSviwer software, the most efficient author, country, organization, and journals were identified. Web of Science articles between the years of 1975-2019 were downloaded with a search strategy and analyzed with Bibliometrix and VOSviwer software. It has been observed that evidence-based medicine articles were grouped under three main clusters (Management and Decision Support, Drug and Experiment and Measurment). The first three countries that have the highest international collaboration rate are Switzerland, New Zealand, and Sweden. The first five countries regarding publication numbers are the USA, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Germany. While Khan and Green have the highest grade in h and g index; Baglı, Castagnetti and Fossum have the highest grade in m index. Guyatt is the author who has the highest number of citations whereas Phillips is the one who has the most publications. While, on one hand, evidence-based medicine extends its function in illness and drug treatments, on the other hand, it is used as policy input to improve the education, curriculum, and the health system. Policy-makers, decision-makers, educators, and researchers can develop strategies according to the findings identified above.

Worldwide production on sleep apnea from 2009–2018. Analysis of the ability to secure funding and international collaboration networks

BackgroundObstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an emerging health problem, but information on scientific production in this subject area is scarce. We aim to evaluate the scientific production on OSA from 2009 to 2018 to illustrate its worldwide distribution, topic areas, and ability to secure funding, as well as to describe international collaboration networks in this field. MethodsArticles published between 2009 and 2018 were extracted from the Science Citation Index Expanded via Web of Science (WoS) using the search term “obstructive sleep apn*“. Publication year, number and country of authors, journal, subject category, key words, funding source and number of citations received were recorded. We also conducted network analyses for key words and international collaboration. Results12,666 articles on OSA were located, which had increased from 895 documents in 2009 to 1592 in 2018. The progressive growth in scientific production on OSA had outpaced the growth rate of total WoS production since 2012.50% of the articles declared some type of funding, with a citation index higher than manuscripts that were not funded. The manuscripts were distributed in journals from 135 subject categories of the WoS, and keyword distribution showed a dispersed pattern with a high number of nodes. The international collaboration rate was 18.2%, and the country network showed the United States as the hegemonic node. ConclusionWorld production on OSA has grown at a higher rate than global production and shows notable thematic dispersion as well as a high ability to secure funding, which increases its impact.

Análisis bibliométrico de las publicaciones científicas originales del Instituto Nacional de Salud del Perú en el periodo 1998-2018

Objetivos: Medir la producción científica del Instituto Nacional de Salud (INS) mediante indicadores bibliométricos de producción, colaboración e impacto. Materiales y métodos: Estudio bibliométrico de publicaciones originales en revistas indizadas en Scopus y Scielo Perú en el periodo 1998-2018. Los indicadores de producción fueron el número de publicaciones por año y por subperiodos (1998-2008 y 2009- 2018), por temática, y por revista de publicación. Los indicadores de colaboración fueron el índice de coautoría, el índice de número de firmas institucionales, la tasa de colaboración nacional e internacional, la proporción de primeria autoría con filiación del INS. Los indicadores de impacto fueron el número de citaciones por año, índice citas/documento, la proporción de documentos alguna vez citados y la velocidad de citación. Resultados: 618 publicaciones tuvieron al menos un autor con filiación INS. El 55,9% (346/618) fue publicado en revistas científicas peruanas. 30 autores del INS fueron grandes productores. El 49,0% (303/618) de las publicaciones tuvo al primer autor con filiación INS. 132 (21,4%) publicaciones fueron sobre enfermedades transmitidas por vectores; 9,7% (60), sobre tuberculosis; y 9,5% (59), sobre zoonosis. La tasa de colaboración internacional fue de 38,8%. La razón citas/documentos fue de 12,8 para todo el periodo. El índice H de las publicaciones con participación del INS fue 37. Conclusiones: En las últimas dos décadas, la contribución del INS estuvo centrada en las enfermedades infecciosas. Por otro lado, requiere fortalecer los índices de productividad de sus autores, así como consolidar las nuevas líneas temáticas que han desarrollado en la última década. Este esfuerzo permitirá mejorar su función como instituto público de investigación.

International collaboration in pharmacy practice research: A bibliometric analysis.

Although international collaborative research has demonstrated a series of benefits in different scientific disciplines, there is no information regarding international collaborative practices in pharmacy practice research. To map international collaborations published in pharmacy practice research journals between 2009 and 2018. A set of pharmacy practice journals was objectively selected from a previously published mapping of pharmacy journals. The 25 journals that were more representative of the pharmacy practice category with higher class 5 chi-square in a descending hierarchical classification were selected. Non-reviewed journals, and those not published during the selected period, were excluded. Articles published between 2009 and 2018 were imported from Scopus. Only papers classified as "Articles" or "Reviews" were analyzed. The countries of the authors' affiliations were identified. International collaboration was defined as articles with two or more countries in the affiliations. The 19 journals analyzed published 22,738 papers, with 16,107 classified as Articles or Reviews. Differences in the international collaboration between journals existed. While a total of 13,214 papers were amenable to be authored in collaboration (2 or more authors, with affiliations recorded), only 1670 (12.6%) were published under international collaboration. A very slight positive trend in the international collaboration rate was found. No correlation existed between the Human Development Index, a composite index incorporating statistical measures of a country's average achievements in health, knowledge and a decent standard of living, and international collaboration. Low rates of international collaboration were found in pharmacy practice research articles, although a slightly positive trend was identified. There was an overall association between collaboration and citations received, but no correlation with country development was found.

La investigación en Bibliometría en la Argentina: quiénes son y qué producen los autores argentinos que realizan estudios bibliométricos

This paper aims to observe and describe the bibliometric research picture in Argentina in the period between 1984 and 2012, based on analysis of the publications of argentine authors located in web search engines, subject repositories and regional and international databases. It interprets forms lining the items studied focusing attention on the following indicators: volume and evolution of scientific production, type of literature, language, subject-matter and analysis unit. It calculates co-authorship index and rates of national and international collaboration. Also it shows the existence of some research groups and the affiliation institutions of main authors, characterizing their research topics and journals and congresses where they published more frequently.

Gender gaps in international research collaboration: a bibliometric approach

This paper addresses gender differences in international research collaboration measured through international co-authorship. The study is based on a dataset consisting of 5600 Norwegian researchers and their publication output during a 3-year period (44,000 publications). Two different indicators are calculated. First, the share of researchers that have been involved in international collaboration as measured by co-authorship, and second, the share of their publications with international co-authorship. The study shows that the field of research is by far the most important factor influencing the propensity to collaborate internationally. There are large differences from humanities on the one hand, where international collaboration in terms of co-authorship is less common, to the natural sciences on the other, where such collaboration is very frequent. On an overall level, we find distinct gender differences in international research collaboration in Norway in the favour of men. However, men and women are not equally distributed across fields and there are relatively more female researchers in fields where the international collaboration rates generally are lower. When the data are analysed by scientific field, academic position, and publication productivity of the researchers, the gender differences in the propensity to collaborate with colleagues in other countries are minor only, and not statistically significant. Concerning gender inequality in science, the main challenge seems to be the lower productivity level of female researchers, which obviously hinders their academic career development. Differences in international collaboration are unlikely to be an important factor in this respect, at least not in the Norwegian research context analysed in this study.

The Evolution of International Scientific Collaboration in Fuel Cells during 1998–2017: A Social Network Perspective

International scientific collaboration has played an important role in the development of fuel cell technology. In this paper, we employ bibliometric methods and social network analysis to explore the patterns and dynamics of scientific collaboration network of fuel cells. A total of 20,358 international collaborative publications in the fuel cell field published during 1998–2017 were collected from Web of Science. We use a series of indicators to address multiple facets of research collaboration and evolution patterns. Results show that international collaboration has been increasing and the characteristics of the scientific network have changed over time. The collaboration network presented a highly uneven distribution, while the sign of decline began to show. The trend of consolidation was presented with one cluster around North America–Asia, one around Europe, and a small emerging collaborating cluster around West Asia. European and North American countries had relatively higher international collaboration rate than Asian countries but lower publishing volume. Two modes of international collaboration exist: Germany, France and UK collaborate with a wide range of countries, while Singapore, Australia, South Korea and Taiwan concentrate on collaborating with few main countries. Microbial fuel cell had developed as a new prominent area in the international collaboration, and the most popular catalysts were nanoparticle and graphene/carbon nanotubes. This study presents a picture of international collaboration from multi-dimension view and provides insights in facilitating more vigorous collaborations in fuel cells.

Evolution of three Nobel Prize themes and a Nobel snub theme in chemistry: a bibliometric study with focus on international collaboration

In this study, three chemistry research themes closely associated with the Nobel Prize are bibliometrically analyzed—Ribozyme, Ozone and Fullerene—as well as a research theme in chemistry not associated with the Nobel Prize (a Nobel snub theme): Brunauer–Emmett–Teller equation. We analyze, based on an algorithmically constructed publication-level classification system, the evolution of the four themes with respect to publication volume and international collaboration, using two datasets, one of them a subset of highly cited publications, for each considered time period. The focus of the study is on international collaboration, where co-occurrence of country names in publications is used as a proxy for international collaboration. For all four themes, especially for Brunauer–Emmett–Teller equation, the publication volumes increase considerably from the earliest period to the later periods. The international collaboration rate shows an increasing trend for each theme. For Ozone, Fullerene and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller equation, the international collaboration rate tend to be higher for the highly cited publications compared to full datasets. With regard to the evolution of number of countries per international publication and per highly cited international publication, a vast majority of the distributions are positively skewed, with a large share of publications with two countries. With respect to the last four periods of the study, the concentration to two countries per publication is more pronounced for the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller equation theme compared to the three Nobel Prize themes.

Analysis of ten years of publishing in Pharmacy Practice.

Objective:The aim of this study is to characterize the patterns and trends in the editorial process and features of the first decade of Pharmacy Practice, with the final goal of initiating a benchmarking process to enhance the quality of the journal.Methods:Metadata of all of the articles published from 2006 issue #3 to 2016 issue #2 were extracted from PubMed and complemented by a manual data extraction process on the full-text articles. Citations of these articles were retrieved from Web of Science (WOS), Scopus, and Google Scholar on August 15, 2016. The references from all of the articles published by Pharmacy Practice in 2015 were also extracted. International collaboration was explored with a network analysis.Results:A total of 40 issues were published in this timespan, including 349 articles, 91.1% of which were original research articles. The number of citations received by these articles varies from 809, as reported by the WOS, to the 1162 reported by Scopus and the 2610 reported by Google Scholar. The journals cited by Pharmacy Practice are mainly pharmacy journals, including Pharm Pract (Granada), Int J Clin Pharm, Am J Health-Syst Pharm, Am J Pharm Educ, and Ann Pharmacother. Only 17.3% of the articles involved international collaboration. Delays in the editorial process increased in 2013, mainly due to an increase in acceptance delay (mean=138 days).Conclusion:Pharmacy Practice has improved its visibility and impact over the past decade, especially after 2014, when the journal became indexed in PubMed Central. The editorial process duration is one of the weaknesses that should be tackled. Further studies should investigate if the low international collaboration rate is common across other pharmacy journals.

Allometric models to measure and analyze the evolution of international research collaboration

A fundamental problem in the field of the social studies of science is how to measure the patterns of international scientific collaboration to analyse the structure and evolution of scientific fields. This study here confronts the problem by developing an allometric model of morphological changes in order to measure and analyse the relative growth of international research collaboration in comparison with domestic collaboration only for fields of science. Statistical analysis, based on data of internationally co-authored papers from National Science Foundation (1997---2012 period), shows an acceleration (a disproportionate relative growth) of collaboration patterns in medical sciences, social sciences, geosciences, agricultural sciences, and psychology (predominantly applied fields). By contrast, some predominantly basic fields, including physics and mathematics, have lower levels of relative growth in international scientific collaboration. These characteristics of patterns of international research collaboration seem to be vital contributing factors for the evolution of the social dynamics and social construction of science. The main aim of this article is therefore to clarify the on-going evolution of scientific fields that might be driven by the plexus (interwoven combination of parts in a system) of research disciplines, which generates emerging research fields with high growth rates of international scientific collaboration.

Hypoallometric scaling in international collaborations

Collaboration is a vital process and dominant theme in knowledge production, although the effectiveness of policies directed at promoting multinational research remains ambiguous. We examined approximately 24 million research articles published over four decades and demonstrated that the scaling of international publications to research productivity for each country obeys a universal and conserved sublinear power law. Inefficient mechanisms in transborder team dynamics or organization as well as increasing opportunity costs may contribute to the disproportionate growth of international collaboration rates with increasing productivity among nations. Given the constrained growth of international relationships, our findings advocate a greater emphasis on the qualitative aspects of collaborations, such as with whom partnerships are forged, particularly when assessing research and policy outcomes.
