Award for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology: Klaus Boehnke.

The Award for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology is given to individuals who have made sustained and enduring contributions to international cooperation and the advancement of knowledge in psychology. The 2022 recipient of the APA Award for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology was selected by the 2021 Committee on International Relations in Psychology. The committee is pleased to present the 2022 APA Award for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology to Klaus Boehnke. Dr. Boehnke is a professor of Social Science Methodology at Jacobs University, Bremen, Germany, and deputy head of the Center for Sociocultural Research at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Moscow, Russian Federation. He has lived and worked at universities in Singapore, Australia, and Canada, in addition to his native Germany. His scholarship has included substantial contributions in political psychology, peace psychology, the psychology of youth, and innovative methodologies and frameworks for cross-national studies. He works with partners and colleagues around the world. Dr. Boehnke has been instrumental in creating and serving in institutions and organizations that promote cooperation across borders. He has served on boards and as advisor to multiple international groups and committees, including as president of the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology, one of the most internationally diverse psychological associations worldwide. Bridging 50 Years of Theoretical and Applied Cross-Cultural Psychology: Contributions of IACCP and JCCP

Over the course of 50 years, the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP) and its flagship journal, Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology (JCCP), have been lynchpins in the relationship between theory and practice. We provide evidence that cross-cultural psychology, as practiced by members of the IACCP, performs an essential bridging function between theoretical psychology and applied psychology. Employing survey data of IACCP members, bibliometric analyses of core members’ publication history, and of the citation patterns of JCCP and other journals, we reveal the extent to which IACCP members contribute to applied psychology and how JCCP contributes to the research published in applied psychology journals. We further review strategies and controversies extant in teaching theoretical and applied cross-cultural psychology to university undergraduate and graduate students in the service of preparing them to live and work in a globalized world. Finally, we look at research traditions, issues, and prospects of a key applied field to which cross-cultural psychology contributes—cross-cultural training.

Counseling Across Cultures: A Half-Century Assessment

As the Special Issue of the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology celebrates the 50th anniversary of the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP), this article aims to summarize and track the development of counseling and psychotherapy in cultural contexts over the past half-century. When the edited volume, Counseling Across Cultures (CAC) first appeared nearly half a century ago, it sent an innovative message that culture matters in counseling and psychotherapy. The CAC editors produced six more updated editions in the succeeding years by 2016. The CAC authors examined the cultural context of accurate assessment, meaningful understanding of culture-relevant concepts, and appropriate interventions in each of the seven editions. They have surveyed universal and cultural aspects of counseling and psychotherapy according to such themes as emic and etic approaches to models of mental health, therapeutic relationships and techniques, assessment and interventions, and training needs against the IACCP’s ever-growing academic and professional activities. Research on the cultural adaptation of specific psychotherapies for specific clients should enhance access to culturally sensitive and evidence-based assessments and interventions. The need for training in multicultural awareness is expected to accelerate in the age of rapid globalization. This article affirms the contribution of the foundation-building approaches of CAC and the need for developing the interface between cross-cultural psychology and related clinical and counseling fields.

The Ascent of Cross-Cultural Psychology

This special Issue of the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology celebrates the 50th anniversary of the founding of the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP) in 1972. This article seeks to provide a summary of the main influences that led to its founding, and the events and activities that followed. In this article, we search for the many relationships between cultural and behavioral phenomena, beginning around the turn of the 20th century, and continuing to the present. This review follows a chronological sequence and is organized according to the main events that led to the founding of IACCP.

A Half-Century Assessment of the Study of Culture and Emotion

Research on emotion and affective sciences is flourishing today like never before. The impetus for this surge is largely rooted in studies of emotion across cultures and coincides with the half century existence of the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP). Beginning with studies initially documenting the universality of the expression and recognition of certain facial expressions of emotion in the 1970s, cross-cultural research was crucial in providing further evidence for the universality of antecedents, appraisals, subjective experiences, self-reported responses, and physiological reactions throughout the 1980s and 1990s. That same literature also demonstrated the existence of many cultural variations in these emotion domains, as well as in the concepts, language, attitudes, beliefs, and values about emotion. We review this literature with the goal of demonstrating some of the many meaningful and important contributions IACCP and cross-cultural studies have made to the field of emotion and affective sciences. This area of research has also been marred by considerable controversies for almost the entire period of study, and we describe those as well. We conclude with a presentation of current models of understanding the association between culture and emotion that integrate disparate cross-cultural findings and address controversies in the field, in the hope that such models can serve as a platform for renewed cross-cultural research in this area for the next half century and beyond.

James (Jim) Georgas (1934-2018).

Presents an obituary for James (Jim) Georgas, who passed away in Athens, Greece, on April 20, 2018. Georgas worked tirelessly at the intersection of cross-cultural psychology and social psychology, and was considered one of the most accomplished cross-cultural social psychologists of his generation. Jim promoted his cross-cultural interests and Greek psychology through various professional positions that he held. These included President of the Hellenic Psychological Society (two terms, 1995-1997 and 1997-1999; honorary president, 1999- 2018) and Professor of Psychology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1983-2001). Jim's contributions to the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology included service as Regional Representative for Europe (1986-1988, 1994-1996), Secretary General (1996-2000), and President (2006-2008). Half a century of cross-cultural psychology: A grateful coda.

This article provides brief commentaries on culture-oriented research in psychology and a synopsis of the author's 50-year involvement in cross-cultural psychology. Overviews of several areas with which he is more familiar are given. These include his career-long stewardship of the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, of which he is founding and special issues editor, continuous involvement with the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology, ongoing interest in the search for psychological universals, studying the influence of cultures on personality, values, and other psychological dimensions, monitoring the inclusion of culture in introductory psychology texts, contributions to cross-cultural counseling, and sustained involvement with the Online Readings in Psychology and Culture since its inception. Also included are comments on both the ever-expanding research on culture's influence on behavior and thought by a growing network of scholars who have different, yet complementary, agendas and research methods.

Regional conferences—A capacity‐building mandate: Report on CRCP2011—Building Bridges and Building a Regional Structure

The Caribbean Regional Conference of Psychology was held in Nassau, The Bahamas, from 15 to 18 November 2011, under the auspices of the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP), the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS), and the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP). The conference was hosted by the Bahamas Psychological Association, and organized by a committee chaired by Dr Ava Thompson, College of the Bahamas. The CRCP2011 attracted over 400 participants from 37 countries, including 20 nations/territories in the Caribbean. A broad scientific program, organized around six conference themes, addressed strengths and challenges to psychology in the region; the current state of psychological research, assessment, and intervention; historical, cultural, and language influences; and links between Caribbean and global models. Conference outcomes included planning for a series of publications to expand on conference themes and presentations, as well as establishment of a steering group to launch a regional organization to support the science and practice of psychology in the Caribbean.

Editorial Introduction and Commentary

In February of 2009 Drs. Vassilis Saroglou and Adam Cohen contacted JCCP with a proposal to develop a special issue that focused on religion and culture. It was the first time that anyone proposed such a project for us to consider. As special issues editor, I immediately became engaged with these two scholars. More than 2 years and over 200 e-mail exchanges later, and aided by a well-advertised call for proposals, the project reached its goal of producing this excellent special issue featuring a topic that is timeless, universal, and often controversial in both the field of religious studies, in all of the sciences, and of course in common debate and discourse. When JCCP was inaugurated in 1970, a slogan that helped guide its publication policy was “. . . to study all that is human.” Thus, all psychological topics or phenomena that may, presumably, be influenced by culture were candidates for scholarly research and professional application. In 1972 it became affiliated with the new International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology, thus enhancing its reputation as an important journal in the growing international interest involving the interface between psychology and culture. It is now widely recognized as the leading outlet for research in the area. Yet after 42 complete years it has never, until now, devoted a special issue or a special section of a regular issue to interrelationships between religion and culture. Religion is, after all, just as ubiquitous as many other human characteristics and attributes such as ethnicity, social status, level of education, marital status, the misused idea of “race,” family, child-rearing, gender, and numerous other demographic categories or variables. It is also among the most variable, personal, and subjective of all attributes that form the sentient person. Of course, JCCP has never been exclusionary, and in fact, many years ago we would have been delighted to consider what Saroglou and Cohen proposed. Yet the word religion appeared in only two titles of 347 articles published in its first decade. A recent analysis affirms this relative absence in JCCP of religion (or related terms) as targets of inquiry in research, scholarship, and teaching. In that analysis, using a software program named Leximancer, Cretchley, Rooney, and Gallois (2010) analyzed 1,416 articles that appeared in JCCP from its inauguration in 1970 through November 2009. Religion did not emerge as a core concept in any of the three-plus decades. An earlier analysis, however, did note that religion was at least part of a small number of articles; it just didn’t register as a central or core topic (Brouwers, van Hemert, Breugelmans, & van de Vijver, 2004). However, this paucity of references to religion was certainly not a manifestation of either cross-cultural psychology’s or the journal’s disinterest in the topic of religion, or of dismissiveness, or of scientific snobbery or of any other position that may have dampened the study of the “mystical,” the “transcendental,” or other adjectives that may have had pejorative intent. Perhaps sensing this, it seems that religious scholars opted for publications with proven track records in this area instead of submitting their work to a new journal that, to many, may have seemed to be “just another” addition to the growing family of psychology journals that championed empiricism

South‐East European Regional Conference of Psychology, 2009, Sofia, Bulgaria

The first South‐East European Regional Conference of Psychology was held in Sofia, Bulgaria, from 30 October to 1 November 2009, under the Patronage of the President of Bulgaria and the auspices of the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP), the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS), and the International Association for Cross‐Cultural Psychology (IACCP), with further financial support provided by the European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations (EFPA) and the European Health Psychology Society (EHPS). The conference was hosted by the Bulgarian Psychological Society under the Conference Presidency of Dr Plamen Dimitrov, who was supported by Professor Sava Djonev as Chair of the Scientific Program Committee. It attracted over 350 participants from 25 countries, including 14 countries from the SEE region and its immediate neighbours. The Scientific Program explored ways and means to promote the role of psychology individually and institutionally at regional and international levels. Planning is already under way to organize a second regional conference in three years’ time.

Interdisciplinary Linkage of Community Psychology and Cross‐Cultural Psychology: History, Values, and an Illustrative Research and Action Project on Intimate Partner Violence

An analysis of the respective organizational histories, missions, and scholarly activity of the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology and the Society for Community Research and Action was conducted in order to inform the development of interdisciplinary linkages between members of the two organizations. The analysis revealed many points of shared values and actions, as well as some important differences. Both scholarly organizations developed out of a similar historical and cultural zeitgeist in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The missions emphasize the role of culture/diversity in psychological phenomena, adopting an interdisciplinary orientation, the value of collaboration, the importance of research method and ethics, and the value of action research. However, community psychology generally lacks an adequate treatment of cultural phenomena while cross-cultural psychology often fails to draw on community and participatory methods useful for understanding culture in context. These common roots and differences are examined. Finally, we describe a community based, participatory research and intervention project to address intimate partner violence among Latinos and European-Americans living in Oregon. Analysis of the research process and on some of our initial findings illustrates challenges and potential benefits of an interdisciplinary, cultural community psychology.

Globalization, religious fundamentalism and the need for meaning

Abstract Globalization may well be the meta-context of our time. This paper seeks to enhance a theoretical understanding of the relationship between globalization and religious fundamentalism. Previous papers [Salzman, M. (2001). Globalization, culture & anxiety. Journal of Social Distress and the Homeless, 10(4): 337–352; Salzman, M. (2003). Existential anxiety, religious fundamentalism, the “clash of civilizations” and terror management theory. Cross Cultural Psychology Bulletin, 37(3): 10–16] utilized a Terror Management Theory perspective in the exploration of the interaction of globalization, culture, anxiety, fundamentalism and intercultural conflict. [Salzman, M. (2006). “Culture Wars” and intercultural conflict from three theoretical perspectives. Paper presented at the XVIIIth international congress international association for cross-cultural psychology] expanded this inquiry by looking at intercultural conflict through the theoretical perspectives of Social Identity Theory, Modernization Theory and Terror Management Theory. The purpose of this paper is to synthesize and extend this inquiry by specifically focusing on the phenomena of religious fundamentalism and its relationship to the processes and dynamics of globalization. This inquiry is anchored by the bedrock question of what human beings truly need and how they seek to address and satisfy real needs. This paper, then, examines the nature of religious fundamentalism, culture-threat, globalization and their interactions through multiple perspectives and considers their implications for conflict, terrorism, development and peace.
