Preface

Proceedings of the 20th International Conference on Ion Sources, Victoria, BC, Canada, 2023ICIS’23 was the 20th event in a biennial series of conferences that are dedicated to Ion Sources and their applications, and the first in-person conference of this series after the COVID 19 pandemic. The conference was hosted by TRIUMF (www.triumf.ca), Canada’s Particle Accelerator Centre in Victoria, BC, Canada, September 17 to September 22, 2023. The ICIS series covers the physics and technology of ion sources for scientific research and applications. With the conference being the main event within the ion sources community it offers a forum for exchanging of new ideas and establishing of collaborations.The conference was held at the Victoria Conference Centre in Victoria BC, Canada, with support from the adjacent Fairmont Empress hotel. The venue is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Lkwungen People, also known as the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations communities.The biennial conference series covers the physics and technology of ion sources for scientific research and applications. New developments and advancements have been presented and discussed. As in previous conferences of this series, all aspects of ion sources have been covered in the categories:• Fundamental processes in ion sources and plasmas• Production of high intensity ion beams• Production of highly charged ion beams• Negative ion sources• Ion sources for fusion• Radioactive ion sources, charge breeders and polarized beams• Beam formation, extraction, transport, and diagnostics• Applications of ion sources• Key technologies for ion sourcesThe conference was organized in a hybrid mode and a zoom link was made available to participants, who could not attend in person. A total of 178 participants have registered for the conference, of whom 20 were students and 23 attended from remote. Fifty contributions have been presented in plenary sessions of which 20 were invited by the international advisory committee. The remaining 30 have been selected by the Scientific advisory committee. 123 contributions have been presented at 2 poster sessions. The high level and interesting contributions triggered lively discussions during all sessions. Thank you to all who contributed to this.Additional events included a tour of the TRIUMF Laboratory on September 17 just before the conference, and a reception on the same evening. In the afternoon of Wednesday, September 20 delegates were able to enjoy the beautiful surrounding Vancouver Island by either participating in a whale watching tour or a nature hike along the shoreline. In the evening of this day the conference banquet was held in the Fairmont Empress hotel.Fifteen students participated in the student poster competition. Members of both the international advisory committee and the scientific program committee acted as judges. Thank you to all the students who have contributed and the judges. Integrating genomics into Canadian oncology nursing policy: Insights from a comparative policy analysis.

To learn from two jurisdictions with mature genomics-informed nursing policy infrastructure-the United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK)-to inform policy development for genomics-informed oncology nursing practice and education in Canada. Comparative document and policy analysis drawing on the 3i + E framework. We drew on the principles of a rapid review and identified academic literature, grey literature and nursing policy documents through a systematic search of two databases, a website search of national genomics nursing and oncology nursing organizations in the US and UK, and recommendations from subject matter experts on an international advisory committee. A total of 94 documents informed our analysis. We found several types of policy documents guiding genomics-informed nursing practice and education in the US and UK. These included position statements, policy advocacy briefs, competencies, scope and standards of practice and education and curriculum frameworks. Examples of drivers that influenced policy development included nurses' values in aligning with evidence and meeting public expectations, strong nurse leaders, policy networks and shifting healthcare and policy landscapes. Our analysis of nursing policy infrastructure in the US and UK provides a framework to guide policy recommendations to accelerate the integration of genomics into Canadian oncology nursing practiceand education. Findings can assist Canadian oncology nurses in developing nursing policy infrastructure that supports full participation in safe and equitable genomics-informed oncology nursing practice and education within an interprofessional context. This study informs Canadian policy development for genomics-informed oncology nursing education and practice. The experiences of other countries demonstrate that change is incremental, and investment from strong advocates and collaborators can accelerate the integration of genomics into nursing. Though this research focuses on oncology nursing, it may also inform other nursing practice contexts influenced by genomics.

Investigating the Prevalence of Comorbidity in Multiple Sclerosis Clinical Trial Populations.

Comorbidity is common in multiple sclerosis (MS) with the most prevalent conditions being depression, anxiety, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. Limited information regarding the representation of comorbidity status is available from phase III clinical trials in MS leading to concern about the potential underrepresentation of individuals with comorbidity in clinical trials. The objective was to estimate the prevalence of comorbidities in MS clinical trial populations. Individual-level data from multiple sponsors were requested for a 2-stage meta-analysis of phase III clinical trials of MS disease-modifying therapies. To ensure consistency of our approach across trials, we followed the Maelstrom retrospective harmonization guidelines. Chronic comorbidities at clinical trial enrollment recommended by the International Advisory Committee on Clinical Trials in MS were considered (depression, anxiety, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, migraine, diabetes, chronic lung disease). Additional comorbidities were also classified. Classification was based on medical history data. Individual comorbidities were summed and categorized as 0, 1, 2, or ≥3. We report the pooled prevalence (95% confidence interval [95% CI]) of comorbidity. The pooled prevalence and prevalence ratios across age, sex, race, disability level, and treatment were also reported. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 statistic. Seventeen trials involving 17,926 participants were included. Fourteen trials enrolled participants with relapsing MS (RMS) while 3 enrolled participants with progressive MS (PMS). The distributions of sex, age, and disability level were generally consistent within RMS and PMS trials. When pooled, almost half of trial participants (46.5%) had ≥1 comorbidity (1: 25.0%, 95% CI 23.0-27.0, I2 = 89.9; 2: 11.4% [9.3-14.0], I2 = 96.3; ≥3: 6.0% [4.2-8.4], I2 = 97.7). Depression (16.45% [12.96-20.88], I2 = 98.3) was the most prevalent comorbidity reported, followed by hypertension (10.16% [8.61-11.98], I2 = 93.2). Heterogeneity was high across trials. Older age and female participants were associated with increased number of comorbidities. Older individuals and male participants had a higher prevalence of hyperlipidemia, while older individuals and female participants had a higher prevalence of depression and anxiety. Individuals with comorbidities are included in clinical trials, although they may still be underrepresented compared with the general MS population. Given the comorbidity prevalence in the trial populations and studies suggesting an association of comorbidities with disease activity, comorbidity may influence outcomes in clinical trials.

V. Ekechukwu.The theme of the Conference was, “Clean Energy Systems for Net-Zero Emission Targets”. The International Summer School on Vacuum, Electron and Ion Technologies (VEIT) has been organized biennially since 1978, when the series of VEIT Schools was launched by the Institute of Electronics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, with the aim to act as a forum for exchange and dissemination of knowledge and ideas on the latest developments in electron-, ion-, and plasma-assisted technologies. The organizers of the 2023 edition of the event were the Institute of Electronics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia, Bulgaria and the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research, Eindhoven, The Netherlands. The School is a major scientific event and a meeting place for young scientists involved in research and development associated with high-tech industries. Many former School participants went on to become successful scientists in their field of research in leading institutions and companies all over the world. The School Proceedings have been published in special issues of the international journals Vacuum, Plasma Processes and Polymers, Journal of Physics: Conference Series.The twenty-third edition of VEIT was held in the Black Sea resort Sozopol, Bulgaria, from 18 to 22 September 2023. It was attended by 108 participants (33 students and young researchers) from 16 countries on two continents: Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Japan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, The Netherlands, Ukraine, UK.The School Program covered a large spectrum of fundamental problems of the nanotechnologies, the interaction of charged particles with solid surfaces, the deposition and characterization of thin films, which were balanced out by reports on a wide range of significant high-technology applications – from equipment for deposition of hard coatings or thin optical/protective films to nanostructures prepared via evaporation, sputtering or irradiation. The 2023 UIT (Italian Union of Thermo-Fluid Dynamics) International Conference, hereafter referred as 40th UIT 2023, was organized by the Department of Engineering at the University of Perugia (Italy), in collaboration with the UIT, on June 26-28 2023, at Palazzo Bernabei, Assisi.The annual UIT Conference was held in Assisi for the first time. The scope of the Conference covered a range of topics in computational fluid-dynamics and heat transfer; thermophysical properties; heat and mass transfer for sustainable energy systems; experimental techniques for heat and mass transfer; multiphase fluid-dynamics; natural, forced and mixed convection.The 40th UIT Heat Transfer Conference 2023 program scheduled three keynote lectures by international recognised scientists: Ibrahim Dincer from Ontario Tech. University (Oshawa, Ontario) about the role of thermodynamics in integrated energy systems; Gary Neil Coleman from NASA Langley Research Center (Hampton, USA) about numerical studies of turbulent supersonic plane-channel flows; and Sauro Filippeschi from University of Pisa (Italy) about wickless two phase heat transfer devices. A total of 97 papers were submitted to the 40th UIT Heat Transfer Conference 2023, 75 of which presented by the Authors in oral sessions and the remaining 22 in one poster session.About 150 researchers participated to the 40th UIT 2023. International Postgraduate Conference for Energy Research 2022 (IPCER2022) was held in Pullman Hotel Kuala Lumpur Bangsar, Malaysia on 19 December 2022. It was organized jointly with co-organizers of Research Universities, Technical Universities and Private Universities. The objective of the conference was to create a stimulating environment for graduate students to discuss their on-going research work on energy with peers and experienced researchers from academia. The target audience of the forum is PhD students, recently graduated PhDs, supervisors, and master students in the related area of Energy. The conference was held in hybrid mode (Face-to-Face and Virtual). In IPCER 2022, both local and international researchers from various research backgrounds were gathered in the conference, which gave the participants the opportunity to increase their knowledge and build the research network for long-term collaboration opportunities. Proceeding of the 43rd Risø International Symposium on Materials Science: Composites for wind energy: Manufacturing, Operation and End-of-life L.P. Mikkelsen, J. BeausonThe focus of the 43rd Risø Symposium is on composites for wind energy. This symposium takes a life cycle perspective and addresses manufacturing, performance during operation, and end-of-life of composites for wind energy. Over the last 40 years, wind turbine blades have grown an order of magnitude. Today, the longest blades exceed 100 meters and weigh 50 tons. Because of this growth in blade size, the cost of wind energy can now compete with fossil-based energy sources in market terms.As society is thriving towards a zero-emission future, the wind energy sector is foreseen to expand further. Longer wind turbine blades with improved overall lifetime, reliability, recyclability, sustainability, operability, and maintainability are some of the objectives set for this component. To address these upcoming and ambitious requirements, the contributions are dedicated to the manufacturing, operation, and performance, as well as end-of-life strategies for wind turbine blades.The Proceedings contain 6 invited papers and 36 contributed papers.The 43rd International Risø Symposium on Materials Science is organized by the Division of Wind Energy Materials and Components at the Department of Wind and Energy Systems, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). XLIV Symposium on Nuclear Physics Hacienda Cocoyoc, Morelos, Mexico January 9-12, 2023The 44th Symposium on Nuclear Physics was celebrated from January 9th to 12th, 2023 at the Hacienda Cocoyoc, Morelos, Mexico. This Symposium has been held every year since its inauguration in 1978 until 2020 despite earth quakes, last minute cancelations by the venue and economic crises. The COVID-19 crisis presented too much of a challenge and the Symposium had to be postponed for two years in a row.In this 2023, the Symposium is back! We had a tremendous response from the international community of nuclear physics which led to a very successful and lively meeting. The program consisted of 32 plenary talks and 20 posters over a broad range of hot topics, such as nuclear structure and reactions, instrumentation, relativistic heavy ions, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental symmetries and hadron physics.This proceedings contain 20 articles of exciting new results and developments in progress of amazing instrumentation that were presented at the meeting.At the meeting there were representatives of several international collaborations to report on the most recent research progress and the most recent developments in laboratories like FRIBS, ORNL, INFN-LNS, INFN-LNL, INFN-LUNA, ININ and the Texas A&M, Notre Dame University and IF-UNAM facilities. During the presentations, recent data from NUMEN, AGATA, SUGAR@LNL, NNBAR, nEDM@SNS and the NOPTREX collaborations were shown. Many apparatus were as well presented, either as recent developments or showing their recent results; such as the K600 spectrometer, LHASA, SUGAR, AGATA, MUGAST, VAMOS, TriSol, FRAISE, FARCOS, CHIMERA and PROSPECT-I.Regarding the theoretical studies, interesting new developments involving different topics were presented on this edition, such as Shell Model, QCD, QED, Abinitio, baryons and pentaquarks, Nuclear Equation of State, Artificial Intelligence Approaches, nuclear clusters, R-matrix, nuclear dynamics and neutrino physics. The high quality of the talks and posters, the expertise of the speakers and the broad spectrum of subjects covered in the meeting, shows that nuclear physics continued working hard despite the Pandemic restrictions, being a very active area at the frontier of scientific research which establishes bridges between many different disciplines, putting together theoretical and experimental researchers and having an extension to the instrumentation developments and applications.Unfortunately, during the last three years we had to say goodbye to four distinguished colleagues who made pioneering contributions to nuclear physics in Mexico and were very instrumental in the success of this series of symposia. María Esther Ortiz (1936-2021) was the last surviving member of the organizing committee of the first symposium in 1978, Jorge Flores (1941-2020) and Pier Mello (1939-2022) were among the first graduate students in nuclear theory in Mexico, and Alfonso Mondragón (1941-2020) was a regular participant in the Symposium for some 35 years. All four were members of the Instituto de Física of the UNAM. The 44th Symposium is dedicated to their memory in celebration of their distinguished careers and in recognition of their important contributions to the development of nuclear physics in Mexico. Some local colleagues presented part of the history of these distinguish researchers at the beginning of the Symposium. 28th International Nuclear Physics Conference (INPC2022)

The 28th International Nuclear Physics Conference (INPC2022) was successfully held in Cape Town, South Africa from 11 to 16 September 2022, marking the first time the conference was held on the African continent. This event, overseen by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), coincided with three major scientific events: The International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD), the centenaries of the Nobel Prize awarded to Niels Bohr and the establishment of IUPAP.The conference program spanned a wide range of topics across the breadth of Nuclear Physics, from hadrons to nuclei, from fundamental science to applications, covering topics such as Hadron Structure and Spectroscopy and QCD Partonic Phenomena, Hot and Dense Nuclear Matter, Nuclear Structure and Nuclear Reactions, Nuclear Astrophysics, Applications and Societal Impact, Neutrinos and Nuclei, Fundamental Interactions and Symmetries, New Facilities and Instrumentation, Outreach and Science Education, and Quantum Computing, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence in Nuclear Physics.The in-person conference was the largest to bring our scientific community together since the COVID-19 pandemic, and provided an excellent opportunity for the 468 delegates to explore the latest progress in the field and reconnect with colleagues. The INPC2022 was a great success, providing an excellent platform for the delegates to share their latest research work, techniques, experiences, challenges, and innovative solutions with colleagues from around the world and provided an opportunity for over 40 African students to be exposed to the field. The conference coincided with the completion of many projects that constitute the pillars of the 2017-2022 Long-Range Plan of iThemba LABS. Use of Information and Communication Technology Strategies to Increase Vaccination Coverage in Older Adults: A Systematic Review.

Coverage rates of routinely recommended vaccines in older adults still fall below the targets established by international and national advisory committees. As a result, related diseases still have a high incidence, morbidity, and mortality. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) could provide useful tools to improve immunization rates by bringing information directly to the target user at a relatively low cost. The present research aims to systematically review recent literature on interventions applying ICT to improve the uptake of influenza, pneumococcal, COVID-19 and herpes zoster immunization rates among older adults. Studies published in English between 1 January 2000 and 10 November 2022 were identified by searching electronic medical databases (PubMed, Scopus) and were independently reviewed by two different authors. A total of 22 studies were included in this review. Interventions applied the following ICT tools: phone calls, text messages, messages sent via personal electronic medical records, automated phone calls, remote patient monitoring in a home telehealth program and emails. In terms of the vaccines promoted, 11 studies prompted the influenza vaccine, four prompted the influenza and pneumococcal vaccines, three the pneumococcal vaccine, two the herpes zoster vaccine, one the COVID-19 vaccine and one both the pneumococcal and herpes zoster vaccines. Overall, more than half of the studies (n = 12) found some level of effectiveness of these ICT strategies in increasing vaccination rates among older adults, while five studies were partially effective (for specific vaccines or population subgroups), and five reported no significant effect. Prevention programs using ICT tools could be effective in promoting immunizations among older adults.

In memoriam Jean‐Claude Dousse

‘Πάντα ῥεῖ’—‘everything flows’ A saying in Ancient Greek, attributed to the philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus, states ‘τὰ πάντα ῥεῖ καὶ οὐδὲν μένει’. It may be translated to ‘everything flows, and nothing stays’. Late 2020, a few months after the passing of Prof. Dr. Jean-Claude Dousse, we published an editorial to commemorate his scientific carrier. In this short summary,1 we anticipated the launch of a special issue ‘In Memoriam Jean-Claude Dousse’. It took us time to put it together, to involve and give time to all colleagues who wanted to contribute to this special issue, especially in view of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, and we are happy to present it here. We truly believed that it was important that the Special Issue is seeing the light. Many scientists have contributed to this Special Issue, which will give the readers of Wiley X-Ray Spectrometry journal an overview of the fields of science in which the imprints and legacy of Jean-Claude Dousse may be found. We would like here to thank all the authors, the reviewers, the editorial team at X-ray Spectrometry, for their time, their work, for their will to contribute to this venture. We would also like to express our appreciation of the numerous expressions of support to this initiative, whether these were followed by a contribution or not. We also recall with a lot of emotions, the feedback received after the special session ‘In Memoriam Jean-Claude Dousse’ we organised during the European X-Ray Spectrometry (EXRS) 2022 Conference,2 under the auspices of EXSA3 and of its members part of the EXRS’ International Advisory Committee. This session, widely attended, has been the opportunity to elaborate on present scientific achievements in various fields of research linked to high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy, while grounding them into the past, and looking towards future developments. The common threads to all these works, were the impact that Jean-Claude's scientific journey had on the science, and that his generous personality, one that has forged trust, that has led to scientific respect he had on his colleagues, collaborators and alumni. A sentence was repeated by all speakers ‘I was one of the lucky persons who […]’ learnt, worked, collaborated, knew Jean-Claude. Indeed, the passion with which Jean-Claude was dealing with science, learning and acting on the world using his scientific imagination and curiosity while providing a heart-centred scientific education and collaboration to his pairs, shined during this session. It is mirrored in this Special Issue. Engraved in the trophy given to him in 2018 at the occasion of the attribution of his title of emeritus professor by the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, were these words: ‘X-Rays are forever’. Without doubt, the scientific legacy of Jean-Claude will be remembered in the X-ray Spectrometry community, and his works will continue to lay the foundations to many upcoming scientific breakthroughs. Science will keep providing advancement, and impacting our lives, while simultaneously, ‘Πάντα ῥεῖ’—‘everything flows’. But this XRS Special Issue will stay in the literature, and we hope that with it, together with all contributors, to have honoured Jean-Claude Dousse.

XXII International Conference and School on Quantum Electronics: “Laser Physics and Applications”

The International School on Quantum Electronics “Laser Physics and Applications” was held for the first time as far back as 1980. Since then it has taken place biennially and has become an important international event in the field of laser physics and laser applications attracting participants from many countries, especially from south-eastern Europe. Traditionally, its program includes lectures delivered by prominent scientists dealing with investigations of basic physical phenomena, processes of interaction of laser radiation with matter and latest scientific results obtained in the research areas of quantum electronics and optics, as well as the technological practical applications of new ideas, devices, instruments and laser systems. Special attention is paid to the active participation of students and young scientists who have the opportunity to present their results and meet and share experience with outstanding professionals in their particular fields of research.The topics include the following:• Laser-matter interactions • Laser spectroscopy and metrology • Laser remote sensing and ecology • Lasers in biology and medicine • Laser systems and nonlinear optics • Alternative techniques for material synthesis and processing The 22nd edition of the ICSQE was held as a virtual forum due to the restrictions related to COVID-19 pandemic from September 19th to 23rd, 2022. The Institute of Electronics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, located in Sofia, Bulgaria, hosted the conference organization. The Big Blue Button on-line system was used as a technical platform for the meeting. The technical sessions of the International School on Quantum Electronics included 22 invited talks (30 min + 5 min Q&A), a Mini-Symposium “Extreme light infrastructure”, 11 oral contributions (30 min + 5 min Q&A) and in total 51 poster presentations divided into 5 sessions (1 hour each). The platform was available 24 hours, allowing discussions in addition to the technical program.
