Intangible and Tangible Investments and Future Earnings Volatility

This study delves into the impact of intangible and tangible investments on future earnings volatility within the European financial market context. Drawing from International Accounting Standards (IAS) 16 and 38, we examine the intricate relationship between fixed assets, expenses, and the uncertainty surrounding forthcoming earnings. Our analysis reveals that intangible assets, often associated with heightened uncertainty and risk, contribute to increased earnings volatility compared to capital expenditures. Furthermore, we find that capitalizing intangible assets serves to alleviate uncertainty, resulting in lower earnings volatility compared to expensing them. Our exploration of industries’ effects further reinforce these findings, with the effect of intangible and tangible investments on earnings volatility being more pronounced in high-tech industries than in low-tech industries. Additionally, our robustness test, utilizing goodwill as a proxy for intangible assets and property, plant, and equipment as a proxy for tangible assets, yields consistent results, further bolstering our findings.

Fixed Asset management is crucial to the accounting process in any business. It can be difficult to find the time and the tools to devote the needed attention to assets that they deserve. The truth is that a company’s assets are the largest investments most companies make. Sound management of assets can yield substantial tax savings in depreciation deductions. Without thorough management of assets, the accuracy of financial reports will be threatened and there will be a negative impact on your bottom line. Establishing the highest standards of depreciation accuracy and best practices in fixed asset management will pay off in the form of savings and efficiency.

Adoption of Accrual Accounting in the Brazilian Public Sector: a Case Study in Light of Regulation Theory

Objective: To identify existing gaps in the adoption of full accrual accounting in the public sector, with a focus on analyzing the financial statements of the Ministry of Defense (MD), and to investigate the application of accrual accounting in the public sector, considering its complex regulations. Theoretical Framework: For the analyses, the theoretical foundation is based on the theory of regulation applicable to accounting regimes in the public sector. Methodology: The research, using the Ministry of Defense (MD) as a case study, adopted a multifaceted methodological approach, including a case study, literature review, and documentary analysis. Data sources included books, dissertations, scientific articles, and legislation. Documentary analysis focused on the MD's Financial Statements, accessed through the government portal, covering the years 2018 to 2022. The research also employed content analysis techniques, following the methodology suggested by Sampaio and Lycarião (2021), to evaluate the content of the information in relation to the established objectives. Results and Conclusions: The research identified that there is already partial adherence of the public sector to international standards, as the cash basis is still observed for revenues, and areas for improvement were noted, such as the adoption of the Statement of Comprehensive Income in the context of the public sector. Research Implications: It was observed that regulatory changes are important instruments for influencing the accountability processes of the public sector. Originality/Value: The research emphasizes the partial adoption of international public accounting standards and suggests further discussions and analysis to achieve complete adherence, confirming a gap between the implementation of standards and their practical application.

War and Financial Statements: Assessing the Impact of the Russia-Ukraine Conflict on International Accounting and Reporting Standards

Purpose: This study aims to assess the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on international accounting and reporting standards. The focus is on understanding how geopolitical tensions influence regulatory divergence, enforcement challenges, financial reporting practices, and market dynamics. Research Design and Methodology: A qualitative methodology was employed, involving a systematic review of scholarly articles, books, reports, and other academic sources. Data were collected from comprehensive searches on databases like Google Scholar and JSTOR, with thematic analysis used to identify recurring themes and patterns. Triangulation, member checking, and reflexivity ensured the validity and reliability of the findings. Findings and Discussion: The findings reveal that the Russia-Ukraine conflict exacerbates regulatory divergence, complicates enforcement of international accounting standards, and increases complexities in financial reporting. Geopolitical tensions lead to fragmented regulatory responses, undermining efforts toward harmonization. Corporations adopt enhanced risk disclosures and conservative reporting approaches to navigate uncertainties and reassure stakeholders. Investor sentiment and market perceptions are significantly influenced, resulting in increased market volatility and shifts in investment strategies. Implications: This study highlights the need for adaptive regulatory responses and collaborative efforts to promote harmonization of accounting standards. Technological innovations, such as blockchain and artificial intelligence, offer promising avenues for enhancing regulatory compliance and transparency. The findings underscore the importance of interdisciplinary research and longitudinal studies in informing policy interventions, corporate strategies, and regulatory reforms, promoting financial stability, transparency, and resilience in conflict-affected environments.

THE IMPACT OF APPLYING INTERNATIONAL STANDARD NINE ON THE QUALITY OF ACCOUNTING INFORMATION

There is an increasing need to find professional institutions that sponsor the work of companies in the financial and accounting fields due to the changes and developments taking place in the economic environments. Hence, the International Accounting Standards Board - IASB, which includes many other sub-boards like the Financial Accounting Standards Board - FASB, has issued many scientific publications in financial and accounting fields. Furthermore, the International Accounting Standards Board, through its sub-boards, including the Financial Accounting Standards Board, has formulated several International Financial Reporting Standards ( IFRS ) to improve the quality of financial reporting and the transparency of the information it contains in a globally applicable and accepted manner. This information would reflect the current situation of economic institutions in terms of performance and financial position in response to changes in economic environments, and to meet the needs of This framework will be applied consistently across transactions, industries, and capital markets to improve the comparability of financial data between economic institutions operating in the same sector globally and within a comprehensive, unified, and stable framework.

Modern problems of determining net realizable value in RAS and IFRS and ways to solve them

Thanks to the Federal Accounting Standard (FAS) 5/2019, net realizable value was introduced into Russian accounting for inventories. A similar value is also used in IAS 2. Despite the relatively long period of use of the specified value, its estimation still raises a number of questions when accounting and reporting according to both Russian and International Standards (hereinafter referred to as RAS and IFRS). These problems and ways to solve them are analyzed in this article. When carrying out research, methods such as analysis and synthesis, grouping method, comparison, analogy method, logical approach, systematic approach were used. As a result of the research carried out in this work, the main modern problems associated with determining the net realizable value in Russian and international accounting have been identified and proposals for their solution have been substantiated. The results obtained in this article will be useful to a wide range of readers interested in current issues relating to the regulations of RAS and IFRS, including the calculation of the net realizable value of inventories, can be used in the educational process of higher educational institutions, in the practical work of accounting departments of modern organizations, as well as in development and improvement of relevant domestic and international accounting standards.

The Impact of International Accounting and Auditing Standards on the Quality of Financial Reporting

Objective: This study aims to measure the impact of applying international standards for financial reporting and auditing on the quality of financial reports for a sample of Iraqi joint-stock companies. Methodology: The study goal is achieved by developing a special form to examine financial reports in addition to a special form to examine the reports of auditors and the extent of compliance with the adopted international standards. To achieve the research objectives, a content analysis method was used for the financial reports of a sample consisting of 18 companies listed on the Iraq Stock Exchange distributed across 8 different sectors of activity. Results: Our findings reveal that most of these companies do not adopt international accounting standards and financial reporting, except for the banking sector. Additionally, statutory auditors do not follow international auditing standards, except for those auditing companies that apply international financial reporting standards. Conclusion: The non-compliance to International Accounting and Auditing Standardsfor the most of listed companies could affect negatively the quality and reliability of financial information provided by them.

Classification and presentation of equity in IFRS financial statements

Subject. This article examines the methodological basis for the classification and presentation of an organization's equity in financial statements prepared in accordance with IFRS. Objectives. The article aims to substantiate the approach to the classification and presentation of information on the equity of an organization, ensuring its relevance and faithfulness. Methods. For the study, we used a logical analysis. Results. Based on the analysis, the article confirms the prospects for the combined use of the two features of the classification of capital items proposed in the Exposure Draft IASB/ED/2023/5 by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). Conclusions. As innovative financial instruments emerge, new problems will arise with the classification of financial instruments that have characteristics of both capital and liabilities. In this regard, it is necessary to continue research in the direction of the evolution of approaches to the classification of capital.

Summary on the Development of Accounting and Auditing Practises towards IFRS-IAS/ISA in Jordan: Historical and Theoretical Perspective

In this article, we take a look at the evolution of accounting in the Middle East [ME] region, with a focus on Jordan. We shall examine the major events in this region’s history and see how they relate to the global accounting agenda, changes in the local and international economic landscape, and other relevant developments. Pay close attention to how cultural and historical factors, in addition to worldwide accounting principles, impact the local accounting environment. The adoption of “International Financial Reporting Standards” [IFRS] by MENA nations is examined, along with the reasons and motives behind it, and the effects on the auditing and accounting professions as a whole. This marks a significant milestone in recent history. This article looks at the history of accounting and auditing in Jordan and how it has developed in relation to the International Accounting and Auditing Standards. It also discusses potential future advances in this field.

Size matters: When do minor discontinued operations become major?

Purpose: This paper explores the thresholds that firms apply when classifying discontinued operations in accordance with the requirement in IFRS 5 Non-current Assets Held for Sale and Discontinued Operations (IFRS 5). Motivation: The IFRS 5 requirement, that only major operations may be classified as discontinued operations, is vague and open to interpretation. Existing literature is largely silent on what firms deem as major, whether diversity exists in practice, and whether the classification decision can be linked to earnings management. Methodology: The sample includes financial statement data of listed South African firms for the financial years ending 2016 to 2022. Univariate analyses and graphical presentations are used to address the research questions. Main findings: Diversity exists as to what firms deem as major discontinued operations. A non-negligible portion of firms classify relatively minor operations as discontinued. Evidence shows that firms’ classification decision is related to whether the discontinued operations incurred losses and whether a firm is audited by a Big Four auditor. No evidence of earnings management through meeting or beating performance benchmarks is found. Practical implications: The paper contributes to a long-standing request to the International Accounting Standards Board to provide guidance on the classification of discontinued operations. The observed thresholds can be used in the decision-making process of practitioners and tertiary educators when assessing whether an operation meets the size requirement of IFRS 5. Contribution: The paper contributes to the limited literature on the topic and relies on hand-collected data that could not be found on commonly used databases.

A Comparative Study of Global Accounting and Indian Accounting

Accounting is a tool to quantify all economic and business transactions in terms of money. The economic and non-economic transactions are measured and compared from year to year and country to country with the help of accounting only. Hence, accounting is a backbone of evidence to identify the strength and weakness of any sector of the country. The accounting systems vary from country to country depending upon the nature of the business. The ancient accounting system has a narrow concept which has been followed within a country. Later in the ancient international trade, business tractions were based on the barter system. The traders followed informal accounting records for their business transactions, before the industrial revolution. Due to the industrial revolution (1760) there was mass production in the textile industries, steamindustries, and iron industries. The huge volume of production led to changes in the field of accounting. The spread of the industrial revolution across Europe, hence it requires a common accounting system among the European countries. The expansion of the volume of economic and business transactions gives the necessity of a globally accepted accounting system. Moreover, in the international trade, all countries around the world are involved in both imports and exports. Hence, the international accounting system is required to know the accuracy of global business transaction. India has its own accounting system which is based on the Indian Companies Act, 1956, later the Indian Companies Act, amended, 2013. The Indian Accounting Standard is applicable only to India, which is framed for Indian companies located in India. If any IndianCompanies located outside India have to follow the International Accounting standards.

Analisis Laporan Keuangan Pondok Pesantren Assalafi Al-Fithrah Surabaya berdasarkan ISAK 35

The aim of this research is to find out how financial reporting and implementation of financial reports are based on ISAK 35 at the Assalafi Al-Fithrah Islamic boarding school. The method used in this research is a qualitative method using a qualitative descriptive approach. In analyzing financial reports based on ISAK 35, several main foundations underlying ISAK 35 are used, namely, the basic accounting framework, accrual principles, income realization principles, fairness principles, and international accounting standards. The results of this research indicate that the Financial Position report at the Assalafi Al-Fithrah Islamic Boarding School has complied with the ISAK 35 principles in preparing the financial position report; Assalafi Al-Fithrah Islamic Boarding School has not implemented comprehensive income reporting; There are deficiencies in the report on changes in net assets; The cash flow report is in accordance with ISAK 35 principles; The notes to the financial report of the Assalafi Al-Fithrah Islamic Boarding School include a detailed explanation of each account, and this is in accordance with ISAK 35 principles.

The asset-backing risk of stablecoin trading: the case of Tether

This article aims to analyse the asset-backing risk of stablecoins, focusing on international accounting standards, classification criteria, and auditing standards and using Tether as a case study. It examines Tether’s issuance, backing, controls, ratios, and regulations to assess risk transmission and mitigation. The results suggest a need for unified and strengthened accounting and auditing standards to enhance user confidence. Liquidity, solvency, and debt ratios were applied to Tether's balance sheets; while Tether has made efforts to increase its transparency, and although it possesses highly liquid assets, challenges remain regarding its liquidity, solvency, and debt. An independent auditors' valuation is crucial for investor confidence, demonstrating that more specific regulations are required for stablecoins. Future research should explore other stablecoins to comprehensively understand the accounting and auditing challenges in the field.

Accounting data governance and its influence on financial report quality: Insights from commercial banks

This study aimed to measure the impact of implementing mechanisms of accounting data governance, represented by International Accounting Standards, internal auditing, external auditing, audit committees, disclosure and transparency, and performance evaluation, on the quality of financial reporting data for the commercial banks listed on the Amman Stock Exchange, totaling (15) banks. To achieve the objectives of this study, a descriptive-analytical approach was adopted by developing a questionnaire to collect the primary data measuring the study variables. The questionnaire was distributed to employees in the financial and control departments of these banks, with a total of (375) respondents from the total study population of (733) individuals. Appropriate statistical methods were used to analyze the data, test hypotheses, and the results of this study revealed a strong positive impact of five variables of accounting data governance mechanisms on achieving the quality of financial reporting data. These variables are ranked from highest to lowest in terms of the strength of impact and correlation with the quality of financial reports: disclosure and transparency, external auditing, International Accounting Standards, internal auditing, and audit committees. However, there was no impact of the performance evaluation governance variable on achieving the quality of financial reporting data. These results call on the management of commercial banks in the study to commit to the objective implementation of the requirements of accounting data governance mechanisms as stipulated by international professional assemblies.

Governance quality and international accounting standards adoption by microfinance institutions

Cette recherche part du principe qu'une gouvernance forte conduit les dirigeants à faire des choix comptables qui améliorent la transparence et la qualité de l'information financière. Sur la base d'un échantillon d'institutions de microfinance notées sur la période 2005-2012, notre étude montre que les institutions de microfinance (IMF) ayant une meilleure qualité de gouvernance d'entreprise sont plus susceptibles d'adopter les normes internationales d'information financière. Cet effet est plus marqué pour les IMF financièrement dépendantes.

“Loss distribution”: the accounting treatment, corporate and tax ramifications, in Brazil

This study describes the accounting treatment and underlying basis of the allocation of losses to partners, not of dividends, but within intra-corporate transactions, according to the IFRS. The study takes into account the fact that there is not always a specific legal requirement for implementation in other countries, as is the case in Brazil, although in the legal literature such treatment is acknowledged internationally. The assumption of accounting loss to a partner's account was originally introduced in the Brazilian Income Tax legislation of 1977. That accounting technique was determined by the Federal Revenue Service. Although Congress was responsible in this period for the accounting discipline, specifically for Corporation Law, they remained silent in this regard. Consequently, the lack of specific legal provisions for corporate accounting standards may have led, in oblique ways, to a small exploration of this topic and its little practical use in the real world. Considering such factors, this research investigates the accounting treatment options currently applicable to this type of transaction in Brazil, under the influence of common law, and various tax and corporate ramifications stemming from its adoption; this paper also aims to publicize possible grounds for propagating the practice, based on the guidelines laid down by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). Applying the qualitative research method, it was possible to conclude that the assumption of loss to the partner account is equivalent to a capital contribution, in the form of contributions made by supporting shareholders. For this reason, shareholders record it as investments and the investee company does not record any revenue, although there is an effective equity increase. Due to being a non-onerous act, given the absence of issuance of shares, there is no change in existing equity interests, nor taxation on the agents involved. The allocation of losses to partners is practical in its contractual form, dispensing with the need for share capital to be increased by the partners and later reduced, commonly referred to in European Law as coup d’accordéon and operação harmónio, which simplifies the transaction and corporate records. This work considers the accounting treatment according to the IFRS, while at all times taking into account the legal framework applied to the transaction, locally and according to international corporate literature, with a view to encourage more extensive use and its resultant benefits.

Emerging Chinese status in international accounting standard setting: A social network analysis of the International Accounting Standards Board

ABSTRACT This study employs a network analysis with centrality measures to trace China’s evolving position within the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) governance network. The analysis spans from 2001 to 2021, revealing the shifts in China’s position from a marginal to a more central one in the IFRS governance network. The benefit of information and control across the network empowers China to emerge as an important force influencing the operations of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and IFRS development. The findings contribute to our understanding of the political dynamics in international accounting regulations. Insights gleaned from China’s experience offer implications for other jurisdictional constituents aspiring to amplify their influence in IFRS development. While acknowledging certain limitations in the study, this research concludes by advocating for a deeper exploration of China’s representation role in the IASB’s decision-making process.
