Golfers' Performance Is Improved More by Combining Foam Rolling and Dynamic Stretch to the Lead Hip Than Practice Golf Swinging.

Despite this, there have been few studies investigating warm-up programs in golf and whether specific factors contribute to improved performance. The purpose of this study was to examine the immediate effects of combined foam rolling and dynamic stretch (FR + DS) to the lead hip on golf swing performance, hip range of motion (ROM), and muscle strength in amateur golfers using a randomized crossover design. The study sample comprised 22 men (mean ± SD; age, 32.6 ± 8.5 years, body mass index (BMI), 23.4 ± 2.7 kg·m-2). Subjects were assigned to receive either FR + DS or repetitive golf swing practice (SW) before crossing over to the other intervention for another day. Measurements included golf swing performance (ball speed, club head speed, flight distance ["carry"], spin rate, and launch angle), hip internal rotation (IR), and external rotation (ER) ROM, as well as hip IR and ER muscle strength. Comparisons between groups were made before and after each intervention. For golf swing performance, FR + DS improved "carry" significantly more than SW (p < 0.05). No significant differences in golf swing performance other than "carry" were found. In addition, IR ROM and IR muscle strength of the lead hip were significantly increased in the FR + DS group (p < 0.05). FR + DS has effects on improving lead hip IR ROM and IR muscle strength, which may facilitate golfers' swing and "carry." FR + DS shows promise as a warm-up method for amateur golfers who want to improve golf performance.

Effect of pelvic floor fascial mobilization on pelvic floor dysfunction in multiparous pregnant women - A randomized pilot study

BackgroundPelvic floor fascial mobilization (PFFM) is an innovative intravaginal and/or intrarectal manual therapy technique developed to treat pelvic distress by improving fascial gliding and muscle function. AimThe effect of PFFM on pelvic floor distress during pregnancy was compared to conventional pelvic floor muscle training. MethodsA pilot prospective randomized clinical trial. The primary outcome was the strength and function of the pelvic floor muscles measured via the Oxford grading scale, perineometry, and hip range of motion. Each subject was treated twice, one week apart. ResultsForty multiparous pregnant women at 24–30 weeks gestation, with pelvic distress, were allocated to PFFM (study group (n = 20)) vs. pelvic floor muscle training (control group (n = 20)). There was no difference in the severity of pelvic distress between the study and control groups before the interventions (PFDI-20: 27.1 ± 12.2 vs. 26.0 ± 13.5, respectively, p = 0.7). Twenty-six subjects completed the study protocol. PFDI-20 showed significant improvement: 42% improvement in the study group vs. 12% improvement in the controls (p = 0.001 for both groups). Group-by-time interaction (Cohen's d) was significant after the first treatment session for Oxford score, right hip internal rotation range of motion, and cervical length in the PFFM group and for perineometry and right hip internal rotation at the end of the study. ConclusionsBased on this pilot randomized trial, PFFM may potentially and partially 1. Alleviate symptoms, 2. Improve pelvic floor function and strength, and 3. Elongate the cervix after one or two treatment sessions. Further, a more extensive study is needed to confirm these results.

Combined Effects of Glenohumeral Mobilization, Stretching, and Thoracic Manipulation on Shoulder Internal Rotation Range of Motion.

Interventions including posterior glenohumeral mobilizations (PGM), sleeper stretches, and thoracic manipulation are commonly used to address posterior shoulder tightness. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of adding thoracic manipulation to PGM and sleeper stretches on passive range of motion (PROM), joint mobility, and infraspinatus electromyographic (EMG) activity in shoulders with decreased internal rotation (IR) PROM. Randomized Sequential Intervention Laboratory Study. Forty individuals with clinically significant IR loss attended two study sessions. Participants were randomized to receive five 30 seconds bouts of either grade III PGM or sleeper stretching. Following a seven-day washout period, all participants attended a second session and received a prescriptive supine HVLA manipulation targeting the T3-4 segment, followed by the previously randomized intervention. Outcome measures included internal rotation PROM, horizontal adduction PROM, posterior glenohumeral joint translation assessed via ultrasound imaging, and EMG activity of the infraspinatus during a PGM. All outcome measures were assessed pre- and immediately post-intervention and compared statistically. There were significant within-group, but not between-group, differences for IR and horizontal adduction PROM following a single session of PGM or sleeper stretch. When combined with thoracic manipulation, significantly smaller within session changes of IR PROM were observed for both PGM (mean difference 4.4, p=0.017) and sleeper stretches (mean difference 6.4, p=0.0005). There were no significant between group differences for horizontal adduction PROM, humeral head translation, or EMG activity across all time points. Both GH posterior mobilizations and sleeper stretches improved IR and horizontal adduction PROM in a single session. The addition of thoracic manipulation prior to local shoulder interventions resulted in smaller gains of both IR and horizontal adduction ROM. Level 2.

Foot posture index and hip joint rotation mobility in handball and soccer players

Purpose: To assess the foot posture and hip joint mobility of elite handball and soccer players and to investigate possible correlations between these measurements. Methods: We compared the differences in means of Foot Posture Index (FPI), passive hip internal (IR), and external (ER) rotation range of motion (ROM) between three groups of male subjects (17 handball players, 17 soccer players, and 16 non-athletes). The Kruskal-Walli’s test and post-hoc pairwise comparison with the Mann-Whitney U test were used to determine the differences between the group means, and associations between variables were analyzed with Spearman’s correlation coefficient. Results: No significant differences in the mean FPI were found between the soccer players (1.3 ± 2.9), handball players (0.7 ± 2.1), and the control group (1.7 ± 2.5) (p &gt; 0.05). Similarly, no significant difference was found between the groups in the hip ER ROM. In contrast, a significantly lower (p &lt; 0.05) hip IR ROM was observed in the soccer players (30.6° ± 5.3°) compared to the handball players (41.0° ± 8.1°) and the control group (41.1° ± 6.4°). A weak positive correlation was only observed between the FPI and hip IR ROM in the soccer players (ρ: 0.36, p = 0.035). Conclusions: Handball and soccer players show a tendency toward less pronated feet compared to non-athletes, but the differences are not significant and the mean FPI values are still within the range of normal foot posture. The range of hip IR seems to be reduced in soccer players and weakly, but significantly and positively associated with the FPI value, which needs to be further investigated in future studies.

Ankle dorsiflexion range of motion and hip abductor strength can predict Lower Quarter Y-Balance Test performance in healthy males

ObjectivesThe aim of the study was to assess whether strength and range of motion (ROM) of the hip and ankle are the factors determining performance in the Lower Quarter Y-Balance test (YBT-LQ). DesignCross-sectional study. Participants66 healthy males (age: 25.2±6.8 years) participated in this study. Main outcome measuresParticipants underwent assessments of ankle dorsiflexion (DF) ROM, hip internal rotation (IR) ROM, external rotation (ER) ROM and isometric strength of hip abductor (ABD), extensor (EXT) and external rotators (ERS) muscles together with YBT-LQ for both legs. A forward 2-steps multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between the predictor variables and the criterion variable. ResultsAnkle DF ROM predicted anterior (ANT) reach (R2 = 0.49; R2 = 0.33; p < 0.001). The model with hip ABD strength and ankle DF ROM explained posteromedial (PM) reach variance for stance leg (R2 = 0.35; p < 0.001), while only hip ABD strength was included for kicking leg (R2 = 0.19; p = 0.007). The model with ankle DF ROM and hip ABD strength explained posterolateral (PL) reach for stance leg (R2 = 0.41; p < 0.001). Hip ABD was the only predictor for kicking leg PL reach (R2 = 0.15; p < 0.001). YBT-LQ composite score was explained by ankle DF ROM and hip ABD strength for both legs (R2 = 0.44; p < 0.001) and (R2 = 0.25; p = 0.002). ConclusionHip ABD strength and ankle DF ROM can determine performance in the YBT-LQ. Strength of hip EXT, ERS as well as ROM of hip IR and ER did not predict YBT-LQ performance.

The Biomechanical and Functional Status of Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis - A Cross Sectional Study

Background and Objectives: Knee deformity associated with osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common complications reported to orthopaedic surgeons. Genu valgum and genu varum are the most commonly occurring deformities due to knee osteoarthritis. When there is progression in degeneration due to osteoarthritis, deformities tend to worsen and will eventually lead to reduction in cadence rate, hindfoot angle, range of motion in both hip and knee. Thus, this study is conducted to analyze these parameters like cadence, hindfoot angle, hip internal flexion, knee flexion, WOMAC scale and VAS pain rating scale between the groups of individuals with genu valgum and genu varum deformity. Methodology: A convenient division was made of a total of 80 knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients into two groups by measuring their medial tibiofemoral angle, namely genu valgum and genu varum. The patients were evaluated for various parameters including gait cadence, reduced knee flexion, hip internal rotation, hind foot angle, WOMAC scale, and VAS pain scale. The discrepancies in these parameters were analyzed between the genu valgum and genu varum groups. This study design represents a cross-sectional approach. Results: The Independent t-test was used to examine the results among the groups, with a significance level set at p ≤ 0.05. Considerable statistical changes were observed in cadence, hindfoot angle, knee flexion ROM, and hip internal rotation ROM, with corresponding p-values of 0.0006, 0.049, 0.002, and 0.01, respectively. However, no significant differences were found in the case of the WOMAC scale and VAS pain rating scale between the groups with genu valgum and genu varum deformities, as their p-values were considerably higher than the significance level (0.169, 0.948). Conclusion: The objective of the study was to gain insight into the biomechanical and functional condition of individuals suffering from knee osteoarthritis. Substantial differences were observed between the groups regarding cadence, hindfoot angle, knee flexion range of motion (ROM), and hip internal rotation ROM. However, when evaluating the WOMAC scale and VAS pain rating scale, both groups exhibited nearly identical values, indicating a lack of statistical significance in these outcome measures. Investigation of the effectiveness of a complex injury prevention programme among young swimmers

AbstractPurposeThe training load required at elite level can lead to shoulder pain even among the youngest swimmers, thus, besides modern water training plans and swimming technique development, the planning of dryland training with a preventive approach is of the utmost importance. The aim of the present study was to map kinetic patterns and sports injury risk factors among young competitive swimmers (between 9 and 12 years of age) and to investigate the effectiveness of a complex injury prevention programme on dry land.Materials and methodsA total of 37 swimmers (19 girls and 18 boys, aged 10.8 ± 1 yrs) participated in the research. We performed a physical examination using the PostureScreen11.1 application, a digital goniometer, a manual dynamometer, and functional and diagnostic orthopaedic tests. The swimmers were divided into a trained group and a control group. A three-month complex injury prevention programme was developed for the trained group. We analysed our data using Statistica for Windows.ResultsWe found that 19% of the swimmers had experienced shoulder pain since starting swimming. We also found several postural faults, a reduction in the rotational arc of motion in the shoulder joint, rotational muscle imbalance, serratus anterior weakness, and scapular dyskinesia. Following the programme, swimmers in the trained group showed significant improvement in the rotational arc of the shoulder joint, internal rotational range of motion, rotational muscle strength, and upper limb stability. Progress was also made in many other areas, although these results were not significant.ConclusionsAs shoulder pain and its risk factors can be observed even among the youngest competitors, a dryland training plan tailored to this group can reduce the occurrence of sports injuries.

Combination of Superior and Posterior Capsular Release Versus Superior Capsular Release Alone in Arthroscopic Repair of Large-to-Massive Rotator Cuff Tears.

Superior capsular release has been used to reduce tendon tension, especially in arthroscopic repair of large-to-massive rotator cuff tears. Some clinicians have used a more extensive release of capsules in arthroscopic cuff repair for adequate reduction of torn tendons to footprints. To explore the effects of additional posterior capsular release for superior capsular release in arthroscopic repair of large-to-massive rotator cuff tears. Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. We compared 26 shoulders that underwent superior and posterior capsular release (group S&P) with 26 shoulders that underwent superior capsular release alone (group S) in arthroscopic repair of large-to-massive rotator cuff tears between January 23, 2013 and December 2, 2015. The visual analog scale for pain, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score, Constant score, and range of motion (ROM) and muscle power were checked preoperatively and at 2 years postoperatively. Follow-up ultrasound was checked at 2 years postoperatively. In both groups, the overall mean functional outcomes improved from preoperatively to postoperatively. Patients in group S&P showed more pre- to postoperative improvement than patients in group S with regard to internal rotation ROM (mean difference, 30.0° vs 20.6°; P < .001) and internal rotation power (3.4 vs 1.8 kgf; P = .001). Patients in group S had a higher retear rate on the follow-up ultrasound than patients in group S&P, but this difference did not reach statistical significance (23.1% vs 11.5%, respectively; P = .465). In the current study, patients who underwent superior and posterior capsular release in arthroscopic repair of large-to-massive rotator cuff tears had greater postoperative improvement in internal rotation ROM and power compared with patients who underwent superior capsular release alone.

Reverse shoulder arthroplasty with a 155° neck-shaft angle inlay implant design without reattachment of the subscapularis tendon results in satisfactory functional internal rotation and no instability: a cohort study

BackgroundThe aim of this study was to use the Activities of Daily Living which require Internal Rotation (ADLIR) questionnaire to assess the functional internal rotation in patients who had undergone reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) without reattachment of the subscapularis (SSc) tendon at a minimum follow-up of 2 years. The secondary aim was to report the objective range of motion (ROM) and the rate of postoperative instability.Materials and methodsAll consecutive primary RSA procedures without reattachment of the SSc tendon that were performed using a Delta Xtend prosthesis (an inlay system with a 155° neck-shaft angle) between January 2015 and December 2020 were identified to ensure a minimum follow-up of 2 years. Patients were contacted and requested to fill in several questionnaires, including the ADLIR and Auto-Constant scores.ResultsIn total, 210 patients met the inclusion criteria; among those patients, 187 could be contacted and 151 completed questionnaires (response rate: 81%). The SSc tendon was fully detached without repair in all cases, and a superolateral approach was used in 130 (86%) cases. The median follow-up was 4.5 years (range: 2.0–7.6). At final follow-up, the mean ADLIR score was 88/100 (interquartile range (IQR): 81–96). The median level reached in internal rotation was the 3rd lumbar vertebra (IQR: lumbosacral region—12th thoracic vertebra). Of the 210 eligible patients, one required a revision for a dislocation within the first month after primary surgery. With regards to regression analysis with ADLIR score as the outcome, none of the factors were associated with the ADLIR score, although age and smoking approached significance (0.0677 and 0.0594, respectively). None of the explanatory variables were associated with ROM in internal rotation (p > 0.05).ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that satisfactory ADLIR scores and internal rotation ROM were obtained at mid-term follow-up after RSA leaving the SSc detached. Leaving the SSc detached also did not lead to high instability rates; only one out of 210 prostheses was revised for dislocation within the first month after primary surgery.Level of evidence III.

Risk factors for hip osteoarthritis after arthroscopy in patients with femoroacetabular impingement

To investigate the risk factors of hip osteoarthritis（HOA） after hip arthroscopy in patients with femoro-acetabular impingement（FAI） syndrome, and to reduce and prevent HOA. From September 2018 to September 2020, 106 patients with FAI underwent hip arthroscopy, including 40 males and 66 females, aged from 20 to 55 years old with an average age of （33.05±10.19） years old. The mechanism of injury included 51 cases for sports injury, 36 for traffic accidents, and 19 for blunt object injury. The duration of the disease ranged from 5 to 19 days with an average of （12.02±3.69） days. All patients were followed up for 18 months. Patients were divided into HOA group （23 cases） and non-HOA group （83 cases） according to the occurrence of HOA. Multivariate Logistic regression was used to analyze the risk factors of HOA after hip arthroscopy in FAI patients. By univariate analysis, aged from 50 to 70 years old, female, body mass index（BMI）> 30 kg·m-2, physical labor, cam type, postoperative infection, last follow-up hip degree of motion （range of motion, ROM） （flexion, abduction, adduction, internal rotation） and Tönnis grade 1 and above of the HOA group were higher than those of the non-HOA group （P<0.05）, and the relative appendicular skeletal muscle index （RASM） was lower than that of non-HOA group（P<0.05）. By multiple Logistic regression analysis, cam type, BMI>30 kg·m-2, last follow-up hip internal rotation ROM and Tönnis grade 1 were risk factors for HOA after hip arthroscopy in FAI patients （P<0.05）. FAI classification, body mass index, hip ROM and Tönnis grade are all related to HOA after hip arthroscopy in FAI patients. Follow-up and intervention should be strengthened in high-risk FAI patients to reduce the occurrence of HOA.

The COVID-19 lockdown as a model of detraining in division 1 college softball players

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the organized training of softball players, similar to the abrupt cessation of sports participation that can happen after an injury. Thus, the COVID-19 pandemic offers a unique model to study how sudden detraining influences softball players.MethodsWe recruited a sample of convenience of National Collegiate Athletic Association Division 1 softball players. They participated in three data collections: pre-lockdown (Jan 2020, T1), post-lockdown (Sept 2020, T2), and before the 2021 season (Jan 2021, T3). Between T1 and T2, players received an at-home conditioning and throwing program, but compliance was not strictly monitored. Between T2-T3, players resumed formal fall training (team-organized workouts, on-field practice, and within-team scrimmage games). At each time point, we collected bilaterally: 1) shoulder internal rotation (IR) and external rotation (ER) range of motion (ROM); 2) shoulder IR and ER strength; 3) hip IR and ER ROM; and 4) hip abduction and extension strength. We used four independent (2 Sides × 3 Timepoints) MANOVA with repeated measures; we followed up significant MANOVA main effect of time with Sidak posthoc tests for pairwise comparisons between time points.ResultsFifteen players participated in this study. We found a significant MANOVA main effect of time for shoulder and hip ROM (p < 0.01). Between T1-T2, dominant shoulder ER ROM decreased 6.5°, dominant shoulder IR ROM increased 4.3°, and lead hip IR ROM increased 4.4°. Between T2-T3, dominant shoulder ER ROM increased 6.3° and trail hip ER ROM increased 5.9°. We found a significant MANOVA main effect of time for shoulder strength (p = 0.03) but not for hip strength (p = 0.18). Between T2-T3, non-dominant shoulder IR and ER increased 1.8 kg and 1.5 kg, respectively.ConclusionA sudden and prolonged cessation of organized training generated changes in shoulder and hip ROM but affected strength to a lesser extent. The loss of shoulder ER and increased lead hip IR ROM are maladaptive as they are associated with injury in overhead athletes. Resuming team-organized training and scrimmage reversed some (shoulder ER), but not all of these changes. Practitioners should monitor clinical variables regularly and be aware of potential changes due to unexpected and prolonged interruptions in training, such as when players suffer sports-related injuries.

Improved joint function when reaching behind the back is associated with patient reported outcomes in individuals with rotator cuff tears following exercise therapy

BackgroundReaching behind the back is painful for individuals with rotator cuff tears. The objectives of the study were to determine changes in glenohumeral kinematics when reaching behind the back, passive range of motion (RoM), patient reported outcomes and the relationships between kinematics and patient reported outcomes following exercise therapy. MethodsEighty-four individuals with symptomatic isolated supraspinatus tears were recruited for this prospective observational study. Glenohumeral kinematics were measured using biplane radiography during a reaching behind the back movement. Passive glenohumeral internal rotation and patient reported outcome measures were collected. Depending on data normality, appropriate tests were utilized to determine changes in variables. Spearman's correlations were utilized for associations, and Stuart-Maxwell tests for changes in distributions. FindingsMaximum active glenohumeral internal rotation increased by 3.2° (P = 0.001), contact path length decreased by 5.5% glenoid size (P = 0.022), passive glenohumeral internal rotation RoM increased by 4.9° (P = 0.001), and Western Ontario Rotator Cuff Index and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons scores increased by 29.8 and 21.1 (P = 0.001), respectively. Changes in Western Ontario Rotator Cuff Index scores positively associated with changes in maximum active glenohumeral internal rotation and negatively associated with changes in contact path lengths (P = 0.008 and P = 0.006, respectively). InterpretationThe reaching behind the back movement was useful in elucidating in-vivo mechanistic changes associated with patient reported outcomes. Glenohumeral joint function and patient reported outcomes improved, where changes in Western Ontario Rotator Cuff Index scores were associated with kinematics. These findings inform clinicians of functional changes following exercise therapy and new targetable treatment factors.

Participants with restricted dominant shoulder internal rotation range of motion demonstrate no side-to-side difference in humeral head translation; and no difference before and after joint mobilization: a pilot study.

[Purpose] To compare humeral head translation (HHT) during shoulder elevation between dominant and non-dominant shoulders in participants with limited dominant shoulder internal rotation range of motion (ROM). To determine if joint mobilization alters HHT, and if relationships exist between the bicipital forearm angle and HHT. [Participants and Methods] Fifteen (9 female) participants (age 25.7 ± 6.8 years) with a minimum 15-degree dominant shoulder internal rotation ROM deficit compared to the opposite shoulder participated. All participants underwent bicipital forearm angle (BFA) measurements and ultrasound imaging to measure acromiohumeral and posterior glenohumeral distances in 3 positions: Resting, 90 degrees of shoulder flexion, and 60 degrees of shoulder abduction with full external rotation. Ultrasound images were used to calculate HHT. Participants' dominant shoulders underwent posterior glide mobilization, followed immediately by repeated ultrasound images and ROM measures. [Results] There was no dominant to non-dominant shoulder, or before and after mobilization HHT differences. No correlations existed between bicipital forearm angles and HHT or ROM gains after mobilization. [Conclusion] Participants with internal rotation ROM loss demonstrated symmetrical HHT. Joint mobilization increased ROM, but HHT was unchanged. No relationships existed between BFA and HHT.

Range of Motion and Muscle Strength Changes in Japanese Professional Pitchers During the Baseball Season.

There are no studies examining changes in the physical function throughout the baseball season in Japanese professional players. We examined the range of motion (ROM) and muscle strength changes in professional baseball pitchers as the season progresses. Five professional baseball pitchers were included. ROM, flexibility, and muscle strength of the trunk and shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and ankle joints were measured pre-season (PRE), mid-season (MID), and post-season (POST). The total shoulder arc ROM of the dominant sides significantly decreased compared to that of the nondominant sides at MID and POST. Shoulder abduction muscle strength of the dominant sides significantly decreased at POST compared to that at PRE. In the trunk, lateral flexion ROM of bilateral sides significantly decreased at MID and POST compared to that at PRE, and the duration time of the side bridge test of the dominant sides significantly decreased at POST to that at PRE. Hip extension ROM and muscle strength and internal rotation ROM of the push-off leg significantly decreased at POST compared to that at PRE. The total shoulder arc ROM and shoulder abductor muscle strength of the dominant sides, trunk lateral flexion ROM and muscle strength, push-off leg hip joint extension muscle strength and ROM, and internal rotation ROMwere more susceptible to changes as the season progressed. In order to maintain performance and prevent a throwing disorder, it is necessary to focus on these movements during the season and to appropriately train and condition these muscle groups.

THE MUSCULOSKELETAL PROFILE OF FEMALE ADOLESCENT ELITE WATER POLO PLAYERS AND THE FACTORS AFFECTING THROWING PERFORMANCE

The musculoskeletal (MSK) profiles of water polo players and other overhead athletes has been shown to relate to injury and throwing performance (TP). There have been no robust studies conducted on the MSK profiles and the variables affecting TP amongst female, adolescent, elite water polo players.A prospective quantitative cohort design was conducted amongst eighty-three female adolescent, elite water polo players (range 14–19 years). All participants filled out the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic questionnaire, followed by a battery of screening tests aimed to identify possible MSK factors affecting TP. Pain provocation tests, range of motion (ROM), upward scapula rotation (USR), strength and pectoralis minor length measurements were all included. Participants also performed throwing speed (TS) and throwing accuracy (TA) tests.All the data collected were grouped together and analysed using SPSS 28.0. The condition for statistical significance was set as p &lt;0.05. Multi-collinearity was tested for among variables to find out inter-variable correlations. Finally, a multiple regression analysis was performed.The mean KJOC score was 82.55 ± 14.96. 26.5% tested positive for at least one of the impingement tests. The MSK profile revealed decreased internal rotation ROM, increased external rotation ROM, a downwardly rotated scapula, weak external rotators, weak serratus anterior strength, strong lower trapezius and gluteus medius strength and a shorter pectoralis minor length all on the dominant side.Age, pectoralis minor length, upper trapezius and serratus anterior strength as well as upward scapula rotation were all positively correlated with TS, while sitting height, upper trapezius and serratus anterior strength and glenohumeral internal rotation ROM were positively correlated with TA.Multiple MSK parameters were found to be related to TS and TA in elite, adolescent water polo players.

Hip Muscle Strength, Range of Motion, and Functional Performance in Young Elite Male Australian Football Players.

Hip and groin injuries are common in field sports such as football, with measurement of hip strength and range of motion (ROM) recommended for assessment of these conditions. We aimed to report hip strength, hip ROM, and functional task performance in young elite Australian football athletes. Cross-sectional study. Fifty-eight newly drafted Australian Football League athletes completed hip abduction, adduction, internal rotation, external rotation, and flexion strength testing with an adjustable stabilized or hand-held dynamometer. Hip internal rotation and external rotation, bent knee fall out, and ankle dorsiflexion ROM were also measured. Players completed hop for distance, side bridge, and star excursion balance functional tests. We compared findings between the dominant and nondominant limbs. We found small deficits unlikely to be clinically meaningful in the dominant limb for hip abduction and adduction strength, and a small deficit in the nondominant limb for external rotation strength and side bridge time. Athletes had lower hip internal rotation (mean difference 2.56°; 95% confidence interval, 0.87 to 4.26) and total rotation ROM (2.03°; 95% confidence interval, 0.06 to 4.01) on the dominant limb. There were no meaningful differences between dominant and nondominant limbs for hip strength, ROM, or functional tests. Our results may be used for benchmarking young male Australian football athletes when targeting optimal strength and returning from injury.

Range of Motion Adaptations During a Simulated Game Exposure in Softball Pitchers.

Hip and shoulder range of motion (ROM) alterations are correlated with increased risk of injury in softball athletes. The purpose of this study was to investigate bilateral shoulder and hip ROM adaptation during a simulated softball double-header exposure. It was hypothesized that shoulder and hip ROM would decrease after simulated game exposure and would not return to baseline following a 30-minute break. Thirty (14.8±1.9 yrs, 162.5±18.3 cm, 71.79±16.03 kg) adolescent softball pitchers participated. Testing included: bilateral hip and shoulder ROM (preSG), simulated game exposure (100 pitches), bilateral hip and shoulder ROM (postSG), 30-minute break, bilateral hip and shoulder ROM (preDH), pitching first inning of a simulated double header (12 pitches), and bilateral hip and shoulder ROM (postDH). Two separate repeated measures multivariate analyses of variance tests determined differences in ROM between time points. Dominant shoulder internal rotation ROM and non-dominant shoulder internal and external rotation ROM significantly decreased from preDG. Stride hip external rotation ROM and drive hip internal and external rotation ROM significantly decreased from preSG to preDH. Key results revealed the break given between games may not be sufficient recovery time for hip ROM. Thus, assessing ROM as workload progresses can be a useful strategy for monitoring a softball pitcher's injury risk.

Throwing Shoulder Adaptations Are Not Related to Shoulder Injury or Pain: A Preliminary Report.

Overhead throwing in baseball and softball athletes induces shoulder adaptations theorized to increase risk of shoulder musculoskeletal injury (MSI) and/or pain due to range of motion (ROM) deficits. Shoulder ROM adaptations are associated with a higher risk for developing shoulder MSI and pain. Prospective cohort study. Level 3. A total of 60 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I athletes cleared for full athletic participation and free from upper extremity MSI in the last 4 weeks (age, 19.0 ± 1.2 years; weight, 82.1 ± 13.7 kg; height, 178.6 ± 11.2 cm; softball, n = 23; baseball, n = 37). Passive glenohumeral internal rotation (IR), external rotation (ER), and horizontal adduction (HA) ROM were measured with the scapula stabilized and used to categorize participants with/without external rotation gain (ERG), external rotation insufficiency (ERI), glenohumeral internal rotation deficit (GIRD), pathological GIRD, and posterior shoulder tightness (PST) before the competitive season. Groups were then compared to assess the incidence of shoulder MSI prospectively and prevalence of shoulder pain at the initial evaluation. Baseball and softball athletes demonstrated significantly less IR ROM in the dominant shoulder (50.6° ± 9.4°) compared with the nondominant shoulder (59.1° ± 8.6°; P < 0.01) and significantly more ER ROM (dominant, 104.6° ± 12.1°; nondominant, 97.7° ± 12.0°; P < 0.01). Incidence of shoulder MSI was 15% but was not significantly related to any shoulder adaptations. No significant relationship was found between prevalence of pain and any shoulder adaptations in the 27% of athletes with pain. Increased ER and decreased IR ROM adaptations in intercollegiate overhead throwing athletes do not appear to be correlated to risk of shoulder MSI or pain. The findings of this level 3 prospective study provide clinicians working with overhead athletes information regarding shoulder MSI risk and pain. It is recommended that clinicians should not use ROM adaptations exclusively to determine increased risk of shoulder MSI.

Assessment of Bilateral Shoulder Range of Motion in Firefighter Trainees Using a Markerless Motion Capture System

The unpredictable environments firefighters face paired with biomechanically compromising shoulder movements, such as overhead and lifting movements, place this population at an increased risk for shoulder injury. The purpose of this study was to assess firefighter trainees’ bilateral shoulder range of motion (ROM) using the Dynamic Athletic Research Institute Motion system. Retrospective anthropometric and ROM data for 31 male firefighter trainees were analyzed. Firefighter trainees’ mean shoulder ROM for bilateral external rotation, internal rotation, and extension were lower than previously published values. External rotation demonstrated the lowest percentage of trainees within normal ROM (left—6.67%, right—16.67%). Noting the susceptibility of upper extremity injuries among firefighters, establishing baseline ROM measurements for reference may improve musculoskeletal evaluations, training interventions, and injury rehabilitation.
