New Insights Into the Surface‐Ocean Dynamics of the Northeastern Atlantic Ocean Across the Marine Isotope Stage 7

AbstractThe upper water‐column dynamics and surface productivity variability in the Northeastern Atlantic Ocean across the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 7 interglacial complex is not well understood. Here, we present high‐resolution planktic foraminiferal proxies combined with Artificial Neural Network based‐sea‐surface temperature (SST) and ice‐rafted detritus records from International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1385, SW Iberian Margin for the intervals representing MIS 8 deglaciation, MIS 7 interglacial complex and MIS 6 glacial inception. The long‐term SST pattern is modulated by insolation and precession parameters across the MIS 7 interglacial complex and is superimposed by the millennial‐scale variability (stadials at ∼250, ∼243, ∼230, ∼221, ∼203, ∼196 and ∼192 ka). The regional SST records indicate high temperature gradient (∼6°C) between the sub‐polar North Atlantic Ocean and the SW Iberian Margin during MIS 7d which enhanced the moisture transport from mid‐to‐high latitudes. Further, low obliquity with low insolation induced cooling at high latitudes and promoted the expansion of ice‐sheets during MIS 7d. Comparison of our faunal proxies with the published marine and terrestrial records from SW Europe and western Mediterranean Sea suggested a weakening and southward shift of Azores High (AH) pressure system, similar to the present‐day (−) NAO‐like atmospheric configuration during the early phases of MIS 7e, MIS 7c and MIS 7a, resulting reduced surface productivity of SW Iberian Margin. During the late phases of MIS 7e, MIS 7c and MIS 7a, the AH pressure system strengthened and shifted northward causing the intensification of the trade winds, a scenario similar to present‐day (+) NAO‐like atmospheric configuration, which resulted in high surface productivity of SW Iberian Margin.

Changes in the Southern Hemisphere westerlies during last interglacial marine isotope stage 5e and its linkage to the Asian summer monsoon

Considerable ambiguity remains over the triggers for the abrupt climate deterioration that terminated the Last Interglacial Marine Isotope Stage 5e (MIS5e) period. A prevailing explanation is a sudden reduction in Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) in response to the reduced boreal summer insolation. Nonetheless, this opinion is challenged by the early weakening of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) documented in the Chinese speleothem oxygen isotope (δ18O) ratio records. Here we propose a new mechanism involving a northerly shift of the Southern Hemisphere mid-latitude westerlies (SHW), based on saturation magnetization (Ms) and stable carbon (δ13C) and oxygen isotopes from a speleothem in northern Tasmania. The Ms record shows high-frequent peaks at 122.8–119.7 ka B.P., while δ18O and δ13C ratios first increase significantly (122.8–122.2 ka B.P.) and then decrease (122.2–119.7 ka B.P.). These Ms peaks suggest a northward shift of SHW at 122.8–119.7 ka B.P., which precedes the earliest ASM weakening for MIS5e demise and coincides with the reduced Agulhas leakage. This indicates that when SHW reaches a northerly position, the reduced Agulhas leakage leads to an anomalous warming in the southern Indian Ocean, further weakening the cross-equatorial flow. Such a process would aggravate the ASM weakening caused by the decline in boreal summer insolation and initiate an early MIS5e demise.

Humid phases on the southwestern Arabian Peninsula are consistent with the last two interglacials

Past environmental and climatic conditions within the Arabian Peninsula are key to understanding the setting for hominin dispersal across the Saharo-Arabian dryland belt. The tufa deposits within the volcanic harrats on the southwest coast of Saudi Arabia fill a significant spatial gap in the distribution of palaeoenvironmental records on the west coast of the Arabian Peninsula adjacent to the Red Sea. In the catchment of Wadi Dabsa in the Harrat Al Birk, there are widespread fossil palustrine to shallow-lacustrine tufa deposits with fluvial elements. Several phases of tufa accumulation, separated by fluvial downcutting, are observable within these powerful palaeoenvironmental proxies. U–Th dating of targeted dense, banded tufa facies, yield ages that are stratigraphically consistent at the landscape scale, and indicate that tufa accumulation occurred during distinct humid phases broadly coeval with the last two warm interglacial Marine Isotope Stages (MIS 7 and MIS 5). For the first time this shows humid intervals in southwest Arabia coincident with the southern coast. There is a simlar pattern emerging further north in the Arabian Peninsula, The Sinai and Levant and further on into continental Europe. Furthermore, tufa δ18O ranges from −14.6 to −1.9‰, covering a range similar to those reported for tufa from north African oasis sites and speleothems elsewhere on the Arabian Peninsula and The Levant. The lowest δ18O values are derived from MIS 5e samples, a pattern in agreement with speleothems in Yemen and Oman, and consistent with an isotopic-enabled climate model simulation for this time slice. The δ13C and Sr isotopic compositions of dated tufa samples indicate deposition from shallow-circulating meteoric water, with no geothermal influence. This, along with the δ18O values, suggest a freshwater supply that was a potable water source in this landscape. The δ13C signatures at Wadi Dabsa are more negative than for parts of north Africa, suggesting Wadi Dabsa may have experienced comparatively higher biomass, thicker soils and wetter conditions with lower evaporative losses. This new record of tufa deposition during the middle and late Pleistocene, suggests for the first time that the west coast of Arabia experienced a similar history of humid phases over the past 250 ka as southern Arabia and the Nefud in the northern interior. These regional changes in hydroclimatic regime occur at timescales coincident with hominin dispersals.

Early Pleistocene calcareous nannofossil assemblages from the Gulf of Cadiz reveal glacial-interglacial and millennial-scale variability

Coccolithophore high resolution (300 years) quantitative analyses have been carried out on Early Pleistocene sediment samples from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site U1387 retrieved in the Gulf of Cadiz. The studied interval is well constrained by the δ18O chronological frame and covers marine isotope stage (MIS) 48 to MIS 45, from 1465.9 ka to 1389.9 ka. The aim is to investigate paleoenvironmental changes during a poorly known interval of the “41 ky world” and understand how climate dynamics controlled coccolithophore abundance and variation at orbital up to millennial scale. Assemblage composition variation and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) indicate that temperature and nutrient availability are the main factors influencing coccolithophores. Precession forcing combined with hydrological and atmospheric dynamics affect changes in coccolithophore assemblage composition and abundance highlighting glacial-interglacial cycles and a millennial scale variability, which is more evident during glacials than during interglacials. Interglacial MIS 47 onset is more abrupt than MIS 45 inception in relation to a more prominent insolation maximum, which favors the sharp increase and highest abundance of warm water taxa in the early MIS 47. Short-term abundance peaks of C. pelagicus spp. pelagicus during glacials document polar-subpolar melting water influx into the Gulf of Cadiz and southward migration of the subpolar front during episodes of high volume ice-sheet in the north hemisphere and reduced Atlantic Meridional Overturning circulation. In late MIS 48 the lowest coccolithophore productivity, induced by colder and stratified surface waters, a terminal stadial has been inferred. Enhanced short-term glacial productivity is favored by higher mixing and nutrient content in surface water due to the strengthened westerly winds during +NAO-like phases. This promotes arid condition and upwelling along the studied site. The interglacial short-term coccolithophore productivity increases are associated with insolation maxima and enhanced nutrients of land origin during more humid periods led by -NAO-like phases, which induce the southward position of the westerlies and higher precipitation in the Mediterranean region and North Africa, in agreement with the contemporary sapropel occurrences in Mediterranean Sea. Our data-set suggests a connection between climate dynamics in the Gulf of Cadiz and east of Gibraltar Strait during the Early Pleistocene as well as a relationship with the north hemisphere ice-sheet dynamics.

Vegetation history of a Mexican Neotropical basin from the late MIS 6 to early MIS 3: The pollen record of Lake Chalco

A new detailed pollen record of the penultimate glacial–interglacial–glacial cycle corresponding to the late marine isotopic stages (MISs) 6–3 (146–35 ka ago) has been obtained from Lake Chalco, in the Basin of Mexico. This record provides an insight into vegetation dynamics and climate variability at the northern limit of the American tropics. The pollen record displays a high temporal resolution with a mean sampling interval of ∼230 years. The changes in plant composition were reconstructed by pollen analysis and differences in plant composition between distinct periods were established. The wettest cold stage, indicated by a combination of diverse open vegetation and mesophytic taxa correlates with the penultimate late glacial MIS 6 (146–130 ka), when Lake Chalco was a deep freshwater lake. The penultimate interglacial MIS 5e (126.5–123.6 ka) shows a dominance of Pinus forests, with tropical taxa suggesting warmer than present conditions; environmental proxies indicate drier conditions and that the lake transitioned into a saline water body. Open communities and Pinus and Quercus forests with mesophytic taxa and, during the stadial periods, MIS 5 d, 5c, and 5 b (125–90 ka), with tropical taxa, characterize the record of interstadials. Pinus-dominated forests characterize the landscape during MIS 5a. MIS 5c to MIS 3 showed lower and variable evenness and palynological richness, along with an increase in fire activity. During MIS 4 and 3, a trend towards drier conditions was also recorded with enhanced carbonate precipitation and proxies indicating saline conditions. Tree-line changes in response to climate change and taxa migration were documented. A comparison with long records from the Greenland ice cores, the marine Cariaco Basin and insolation parameters revealed that the pollen data and the Pinus pollen accumulation rates evidence the response of the vegetation to glacial and interglacial changes and to millennial-scale variability. Wetter conditions were inferred to exist during the Greenland interstadials, while drier conditions persisted during Heinrich events.

Constraints on Marine Isotope Stage 3 and 5 Sea Level From the Flooding History of the Karimata Strait in Indonesia

AbstractGlobal mean sea level (GMSL) during intermediate interglacial Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3) (60–26 ka) has proven difficult to constrain. Paleo‐sea level estimates based on ice margin, modeling, and paleo‐shoreline reconstructions indicate that MIS 3 GMSL was substantially higher than reconstructed from deep‐ocean benthic foraminifera oxygen isotope (δ18O) and coral records, implying much smaller ice sheets during MIS 3. Here, we use the δ18O and Mg/Ca chemistry of surface and thermocline dwelling foraminifera in the Sulu Sea in the western Pacific margin to estimate relative changes of the influx of South China Sea surface flow through the Sulu Sea over the last 140 ka. We show that this South China Sea throughflow is controlled in part by changes in GMSL modulating the depth of the 36 m deep Karimata Strait at the southern end of the South China Sea. We constrain maximum allowable GMSL at the beginning and end of MIS 3 to −22 ± 6 and −29 ± 5 m, respectively, and minimum allowable GMSL during interglacial stages MIS 5c and 5a (117–72 ka) to range from −3 ± 8 to −8 ± 8 m and −11 ± 7 to −12 ± 7 m, respectively. Our results constrain MIS 3 GMSL, but do not rule out higher MIS 3 ice margin, modeling, and paleo‐shoreline‐based MIS 3 GMSL estimates or lower coral and seawater δ18O‐based estimates. Our results favor the highest MIS 5a and 5c GMSL estimates and confirm that the Sunda Shelf served as a land‐bridge for human and megafauna migration during MIS 3 when humans first arrived in Borneo.

A Southern Portuguese Margin Perspective of Marine Isotope Stage 47—An Interglacial in the 41 kyr World

In order to better understand interglacial climate variability within the 41 kyr world, we produced high-resolution climate records for interglacial Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 47 (1424–1452 ka) at IODP Site U1387 (36°48′ N, 7°43′ W) on the southern Portuguese margin. Using benthic and planktonic foraminifera stable isotope records, Uk’37 sea-surface temperature (SST), and plankton assemblage data we investigated Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW) and surface water conditions. The MOW-level records indicate a poorly ventilated and sluggish bottom current during the MIS 48/MIS 47 transition in association with the insolation maximum, whereas a well-ventilated MOW formed a contourite layer during the second insolation maximum. The benthic δ18O record shows a fairly abrupt change during the deglaciation of MIS 48, while the surface waters experienced a terminal stadial event that was associated with initial cooling and freshening followed by stepwise warming until interglacial SST was reached at 1450 ka. Interglacial conditions with SST of 24 °C or higher persisted until 1427 ka, although warm SST prevailed into MIS 46. The persistent and prolonged warmth is attributed to a northward expansion of the subtropical gyre during MIS 47 as reflected by the dominance of subtropical-tropical planktonic foraminifera species and the presence of warm water coccolithophores taxa.

The microfacies distribution pattern of Cozumel Island in southeastern Mexico: An atoll-like model led by quaternary glacioeustatic sea-level changes

Isolated carbonate banks in stable tectonic settings are ideal for understanding the architecture of sedimentary systems and their response to flooding events. Within these environments, sea-level changes play a primary role in depositing sedimentary units during high sea levels and unconformities during sea-level drops. Microfacies analysis and geologic interpretation, combined with a High Resolution Digital Elevation Model from LiDAR data were used to reevaluate the sediment distribution pattern of Cozumel Island, proposing a new depositional model. The chronostratigraphic framework was established by correlating the exposure surfaces (caliches) of Cozumel with others in adjacent regions. The study of several sections around the island led to the identification of two lithostratigraphic units. Unit 1 comprises two coral reef facies associations (FAs 0 and 1), separated by the Caliche-0 layer. The upper limit of Unit 1 is represented by the Caliche 1 layer and the karst features developed during Marine Isotopic Stage (MIS) 6. Unit 2 was deposited over the ancient karst topography as the lower limit, with Caliche 2 as the upper limit. Unit 2 comprises three facies associations (FAs-2A, B, C), consistent with the protected, open lagoon and the facies of the platform margin, establishing atoll-like depositional conditions. Unit 2 developed during the last interglacial MIS 5e, whereas the Caliche 2 layer started to develop in a post-MIS 5e event during the sea-level drop. This exposed the previous depositional environments to meteoric diagenesis with the formation of the caliche layer. The Caliche 2 layer stabilized the landscape until the present day. Unit 2 correlates to certain morphostratigraphic and geomorphological structures (Terraces I, II, III) on the island. The emplacement of sand islands (FAs-2A), preexisting topography, relative sea-level variations, and sediment supply lead to the pattern and configuration of the depositional model. In addition, the evolution of Cozumel Island during the MIS 5e is similar to other Holocene atoll-like islands in the Caribbean region.

Organic matter characteristics of a rapidly eroding permafrost cliff in NE Siberia (Lena Delta, Laptev Sea region)

Abstract. Organic carbon (OC) stored in Arctic permafrost represents one of Earth's largest and most vulnerable terrestrial carbon pools. Amplified climate warming across the Arctic results in widespread permafrost thaw. Permafrost deposits exposed at river cliffs and coasts are particularly susceptible to thawing processes. Accelerating erosion of terrestrial permafrost along shorelines leads to increased transfer of organic matter (OM) to nearshore waters. However, the amount of terrestrial permafrost carbon and nitrogen as well as the OM quality in these deposits is still poorly quantified. We define the OM quality as the intrinsic potential for further transformation, decomposition and mineralisation. Here, we characterise the sources and the quality of OM supplied to the Lena River at a rapidly eroding permafrost river shoreline cliff in the eastern part of the delta (Sobo-Sise Island). Our multi-proxy approach captures bulk elemental, molecular geochemical and carbon isotopic analyses of Late Pleistocene Yedoma permafrost and Holocene cover deposits, discontinuously spanning the last ∼52 kyr. We showed that the ancient permafrost exposed in the Sobo-Sise cliff has a high organic carbon content (mean of about 5 wt %). The oldest sediments stem from Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 interstadial deposits (dated to 52 to 28 cal ka BP) and are overlaid by last glacial MIS 2 (dated to 28 to 15 cal ka BP) and Holocene MIS 1 (dated to 7–0 cal ka BP) deposits. The relatively high average chain length (ACL) index of n-alkanes along the cliff profile indicates a predominant contribution of vascular plants to the OM composition. The elevated ratio of iso- and anteiso-branched fatty acids (FAs) relative to mid- and long-chain (C ≥ 20) n-FAs in the interstadial MIS 3 and the interglacial MIS 1 deposits suggests stronger microbial activity and consequently higher input of bacterial biomass during these climatically warmer periods. The overall high carbon preference index (CPI) and higher plant fatty acid (HPFA) values as well as high C/N ratios point to a good quality of the preserved OM and thus to a high potential of the OM for decomposition upon thaw. A decrease in HPFA values downwards along the profile probably indicates stronger OM decomposition in the oldest (MIS 3) deposits of the cliff. The characterisation of OM from eroding permafrost leads to a better assessment of the greenhouse gas potential of the OC released into river and nearshore waters in the future.

Trace fossil characterization during Termination V and MIS 11 at the western Mediterranean: Connection between surface conditions and deep environment

Trace fossil assemblages are studied at Ocean Discovery Program (ODP) Site 977 to characterize the response of the macrobenthic trace maker community to deep paleoenvironmental conditions during the Termination V (TV) and interglacial Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 11 at the western Mediterranean Alboran Sea. An assemblage composed of Chondrites, Planolites, Scolicia, Thalassinoides and Zoophycos is identified, showing notable variations in ichnodiversity, abundance and Bioturbation Index, that were analyzed in detail. The integration of ichnological information with sediment color and high-resolution coccolithophore records from Site 977, evidenced that variations in macrobenthic trace maker community are primarily controlled by oxygen availability and surface organic productivity patterns. During TV, high surface organic productivity by intense Alboran Upwelling System enhanced the deep organic accumulation that, together with reduced deep-water removal, resulted in a decrease of bioturbation and the formation of an Organic Rich Layer. Moderate and stable surface production through MIS 11c reduced deep food availability, resulting in an oligotrophic and stable deep environment. This is reflected by relatively abundant trace fossils in lighter sediments. Intra-interglacial increase in surface organic production at ~405 ka is evidenced by increased organic matter preservation. Minor impact of western Mediterranean circulation on deep-water removal, but a plausible stronger control by Bernoulli aspiration intensities in the region, is, in overall, observed during these intervals. During the Heinrich-type (Ht) events 3 and 2, increased trace fossil diversity and ameliorated oxygenation is driven by limited surface organic production, but intense western Mediterranean deep-water circulation and enhanced regional deep-water removal.

Orbital controls on eastern African hydroclimate in the Pleistocene

Understanding eastern African paleoclimate is critical for contextualizing early human evolution, adaptation, and dispersal, yet Pleistocene climate of this region and its governing mechanisms remain poorly understood due to the lack of long, orbitally-resolved, terrestrial paleoclimate records. Here we present leaf wax hydrogen isotope records of rainfall from paleolake sediment cores from key time windows that resolve long-term trends, variations, and high-latitude effects on tropical African precipitation. Eastern African rainfall was dominantly controlled by variations in low-latitude summer insolation during most of the early and middle Pleistocene, with little evidence that glacial–interglacial cycles impacted rainfall until the late Pleistocene. We observe the influence of high-latitude-driven climate processes emerging from the last interglacial (Marine Isotope Stage 5) to the present, an interval when glacial–interglacial cycles were strong and insolation forcing was weak. Our results demonstrate a variable response of eastern African rainfall to low-latitude insolation forcing and high-latitude-driven climate change, likely related to the relative strengths of these forcings through time and a threshold in monsoon sensitivity. We observe little difference in mean rainfall between the early, middle, and late Pleistocene, which suggests that orbitally-driven climate variations likely played a more significant role than gradual change in the relationship between early humans and their environment.

Precise timing of MIS 7 substages from the Austrian Alps

Abstract. Investigating the precise timing of regional-scale climate changes during glacial terminations and the interglacial periods that follow is key to unraveling the mechanisms behind these global climate shifts. Here, we present a high-precision time series of climate changes in the Austrian Alps that coincide with the later portion of Termination III (TIII), the entire penultimate interglacial (Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 7), Termination IIIa (TIIIa), and the penultimate glacial inception (MIS 7–6 transition). Using state-of-the-art mass spectrometry techniques, we have constructed a uranium-series chronology with relative age uncertainties averaging 1.7 ‰ (2σ) for our study period (247 to 191 thousand years before present, ka). Results reveal the onset of warming in the Austrian Alps associated with TIII at 242.5 ± 0.2 ka and the duration of MIS 7e warming between 241.8 and 236.7 (±0.6) ka. An abrupt shift towards higher δ18O values at 216.8 ka marks the onset of regional warming associated with TIIIa. Two periods of high δ18O values (greater than −10 ‰ Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite (VPDB)) between 215.9–213.3 and 204.3–197.5 (±0.4) ka coincide with interglacial substages MIS 7c and 7a, respectively. Multiple fluorescent inclusions suggest a partial retreat of the local Alpine glacier during peak obliquity forcings at 214.3 ± 0.4 ka. Two newly collected stalagmites from Spannagel Cave (SPA146 and 183) provide high-resolution replications of the latter portion of the MIS 7a-to-6e transition. The resulting multi-stalagmite record reveals important chronological constraints on climate shifts in the Austrian Alps associated with MIS 7 while offering new insight into the timing of millennial-scale changes in the North Atlantic realm leading up to TIII and TIIIa.

Control Mechanisms of Primary Productivity Revealed by Calcareous Nannoplankton From Marine Isotope Stages 12 to 9 at the Shackleton Site (IODP Site U1385)

AbstractNowadays, primary productivity variations at the SW Iberian Margin (IbM) are primarily controlled by wind‐driven upwelling. Thus, major changes in atmospheric circulation and wind regimes between the Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 12 and 9 could have driven substantial changes in phytoplankton productivity which remains poorly understood. We present a high‐resolution calcareous nannofossil record from the Shackleton Site Integrated Ocean Discovery Program Site U1385 that allow the assessment of primary productivity and changing surface conditions on orbital and suborbital timescales over the SW IbM. These records are directly compared and integrated with terrestrial – Mediterranean forest pollen – and marine – benthic and planktic oxygen stable isotopes (δ18O), alkenone concentration [C37], Uk´37‐Sea Surface Temperature and % C37:4 – proxy records from Site U1385. Our results indicate intra‐interglacial increase in primary productivity together with intensification of the Azores anticyclonic high‐pressure cell beyond the summer that suggests a two‐phase upwelling behavior during the full interglacial MIS 11c (∼420–397 ka), potentially drived by atmospheric NAO‐like variability. Primary productivity is largely enhanced during the inception of glacial MIS 10 and the early MIS 10 (∼392–356 ka), linked to intensified upwelling and associated processes during a period of strengthened atmospheric circulation. In agreement with the conditions observed during Heinrich events of the last glacial cycle, primary productivity reductions during abrupt cold episodes, including the Heinrich‐type (Ht) events 4 to 1 (∼436, 392, 384 and 339 ka) and the Terminations V and IV, seems to be the result of halocline formation induced by meltwater arrival, reducing the regional upward nutrient transference.

Tracking behavioral persistence and innovations during the Middle Pleistocene in Western Europe. Shift in occupations between 700 and 450 ka at la Noira site (Centre, France)

Some areas in Western Europe indicate hiatuses in human occupations, which cannot be systematically attributed to taphonomic factors and poor site preservation. The site of la Noira in the center of France records two occupation phases with a significant time gap. The older one is dated to around 700 ka (stratum a) with an Acheulean assemblage, among the earliest in Western Europe, and the upper phase of the sequence (stratum c) is dated to ca. 450 ka. Humans left the area at around 670 ka, at the beginning of the marine isotope stage (MIS) 16 glacial stage, when cold conditions became too severe. No sites between 650 and 450 ka have yet been discovered in the center region despite systematic surveys over the past three decades. The archaeological evidence indicates that populations returned to the area, at the end of MIS 12 or the beginning of the long interglacial MIS 11. Here, we use technological behaviors common to the two levels of la Noira—strata a and c to evaluate their differences. Compared to other key European sequences, this site can be used to address the evolution of the behavioral strategies in Europe between MIS 17 and 11. We formulate two hypotheses concerning the human settlement of this area: (1) local behavioral evolution over time of populations occasionally occupying the region when the climate was favorable or (2) dispersal and arrival of new populations from other areas. The results focus on (1) changes in land-use patterns with the extension of the territory used by hominins in the upper level, (2) the introduction of new core technologies, including some evidence of early Levallois debitage, and (3) more intensive shaping of bifaces and bifacial tools. Results attest that the la Noira archaeological assemblages record similar regional behavioral evolution as observed at a larger scale in Europe.

Changes in the Intermediate Water Masses of the Mediterranean Sea During the Last Climatic Cycle—New Constraints From Neodymium Isotopes in Foraminifera

AbstractVariations in Mediterranean thermohaline circulation of the Quaternary are still not well constrained whereas they have been considered to have an influence on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and on the oxygenation of waters in the deep basins of the Mediterranean Sea. εNd analyses have been carried out on planktonic foraminifera of cores collected in the central Mediterranean Sea to constrain water mass exchange between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean Sea (EMS and WMS) during the last climatic cycle. εNd records from the WMS and EMS display similar higher values during warm substages of interglacial Marine Isotopic Stage (MIS) 1 and 5. This suggests an efficient connection between the two Mediterranean sub‐basins and the transfer of radiogenic waters to the Tyrrhenian Sea via the Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW). Conversely, during glacial MIS, εNd of the intermediate depth of the Tyrrhenian Sea are less radiogenic than the EMS, implying limited hydrological connection between sub‐basins during low sea‐level stands. Superimposed on these glacial‐interglacial variations, increased εNd occurred during Heinrich Stadial events. This suggests a reduction in the formation of unradiogenic WIW in the Gulf of Lions due to the input of relatively fresh surface Atlantic water to the WMS and/or the inflow of radiogenic glacial LIW and upper EMDW to the Tyrrhenian Sea as a result of an active EMS convection related to saltier and colder conditions. Such potential millennial‐scale pulses of LIW intrusion into the Tyrrhenian Sea may have led to an enhanced Mediterranean Outflow Water intensity in the Gibraltar Strait.

Coping with arid environments: A critical threshold for human expansion in Europe at the Marine Isotope Stage 12/11 transition? The case of the Iberian Peninsula

Archaeological remains have highlighted the fact that the interglacial Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 11 was a threshold from the perspective of hominin evolution in Europe. After the MIS 12 glaciation, considered one of the major climate-driven crises experienced by hominins, the archaeological records show an increasing number of occupations, evidence of new subsistence behaviors, and significant technical innovations. Here, we used statistical and geographic techniques to analyze the amphibian- and reptile-based paleoclimate and habitat reconstructions generated from a large data set of the Iberian Peninsula to (1) investigate if temperature, precipitation, and/or forest cover may have impacted the hominin occupation of the territory during the Early and Middle Pleistocene, (2) propose an ‘Iberian’ ecological model before and after the MIS 12/11 transition, and (3) evaluate, based on this model, the potential hominin occupation at a European scale. The results indicate the existence of climatic constraints on human settlement related to rainfall and environmental humidity. The Early Pleistocene and the first half of the Middle Pleistocene are dominated by the occupation of relatively humid wooded areas, whereas during the second part of the Middle Pleistocene, a broadening of the earlier ecological niche is clearly observed toward the occupation of more open arid areas. Based on the estimated occupational niche for hominins, a maximum potential distribution for early hominins is proposed in Europe before and after 426 ka. Results also indicate that parts of the Iberian Peninsula may not have been suitable for early hominin occupation. Our ecological model is consistent with the pattern of hominin occupation observed in northern and central Europe, where the earliest evidence reflects only pioneering populations merely extending their ranges in response to the expansion of their preferred habitats, as compared with a more sustained occupation by 400 ka.

Droughts, flooding events, and shifts in water sources and seasonality characterize last interglacial Levant climate

Modern observations document increased drought frequency together with more intense precipitation and flooding in the world’s semi-arid and arid regions as a consequence of the warming climate. Climate models predict that such conditions will intensify in the future, impacting millions of people. Paleoclimate studies can complement the short modern observational record and model projections by documenting climate changes in the past. Here we report major shifts in the geographic sources, intensity, and seasonality of Eastern Mediterranean precipitation during the unusually warm last interglacial period Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e, reflecting global shifts in the rain and desert belts, based on 234U/238U-ratios in mineral precipitates in the Dead Sea, combined with evidence from climate model simulations.In the Dead Sea catchment 234U/238U ratios are indicators of water sources, where the Jordan River (flowing from the north) and the western catchments show high activity ratios between ∼1.5–1.7, and the eastern and southern catchments and flash floods (in the south-west, south and east) show lower ratios of 1.0–1.2. In Dead Sea water and precipitated minerals, 234U/238U is nearly always ∼1.45–1.55 during both glacials and interglacials. However, during the last interglacial MIS 5e insolation peak (∼127–122 ka) its value decreased to 1.2–1.3, and then to ∼1.0 towards its end (∼122–116 ka). During the insolation peak, the U-isotope data, combined with climate model runs forced with period orbital and greenhouse gas concentrations, indicate that rainfall associated with the African Summer Monsoon in the Dead Sea catchment accounted for ∼50% of the total annual rainfall, in stark contrast to present-day dry summers. The geochemical evidence indicates that following the insolation peak the region experienced an extremely dry period (although punctuated with wetter intervals), signifying expansion of the desert belt, similar to predicted effects of anthropogenic warming. This drying is partly supported by climate model runs forced with the appropriate changes in orbital parameters. The extreme drying during late MIS 5e between ∼122–116 ka reflected a major weakening of Mediterranean storm systems, resulting in a major decline of the Jordan River flow (indicated by the low 234U/238U ratios in the Dead Sea) and a relative increase in precipitation associated with the African Monsoon, shifting towards autumn. The Jordan River flow is estimated to be ∼10% of the present-day (pre-1964, prior to major diversion of the Jordan River and its sources for human use). Such changes, if they occur in the future, have serious implications for future water availability in the politically sensitive Middle East.

Eco-environmental changes in the Chinese Loess Plateau during low-eccentricity interglacial Marine Isotope Stage 19

Eco-environmental changes during interglacials with an astronomical background similar to that of the Holocene are potentially helpful for understanding the future climatic evolution. Marine oxygen isotope stage (MIS) 19 is similar to the Holocene in astronomical background, both being characterized by a low eccentricity of the Earth’s orbit. However, MIS 19 has attracted research attention only recently and therefore less is known about eco-environmental changes during this interval, especially based on terrestrial records. In the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP), the S7 paleosol can provide valuable terrestrial paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental record for MIS 19. Here, high-resolution terrestrial snail records from the L8–L7 strata of the Huining, Xifeng and Luochuan sequences in the CLP were analyzed in order to characterize spatio-temporal changes in climate and eco-environment during MIS 20–18. The results show that in all three sections the late part of MIS 20 was dominated by abundant cold-aridiphilous mollusc species, indicating that cold and dry climatic conditions prevailed across the entire CLP, under the strong influence of the winter monsoon. The mollusc fauna of MIS 19 were dominated by warmth-loving and thermo-humidiphilous species that enable the definition of two climatic stages. The early part of MIS 19 (~790–778 ka) was marked by warm and humid conditions, as evidenced by high abundances of warmth-loving and thermo-humidiphilous species. This interval was slightly warmer than today and it lasted for ~12 kyr. The climate of the later part of MIS 19 (~778–761 ka) was more moderate, and increased proportions of cold-aridiphilous and warmth-loving species were recorded. The warmth of this period was similar to that of today, but the climatic fluctuations were stronger. During the early part of MIS 18 (~761–745 ka), the Xifeng and Luochuan sections in the eastern CLP still maintained high abundances of warmth-loving and thermo-humidiphilous species, indicating that the moderate climatic conditions during late MIS 19 continued during early MIS 18, lasting for another ~15 kyr, and that the influence of the summer monsoon remained strong in the eastern CLP during early MIS 18. However, in the western CLP, cold-aridiphilous species in the Huining section became dominant during early MIS 18, reflecting the prevalence of a cold and dry glacial climate, with the strong influence of the winter monsoon. These findings indicate that a steeper climatic gradient and a pronounced regional environmental difference existed between the eastern and western CLP during the early part of MIS 18. Comparison of our mollusc results with the variation of Earth orbital parameters suggested that climate changes in the CLP during MIS 20–18 were likely controlled mainly by insolation changes forced by the configuration of Earth orbital parameters. The unique orbital configuration during the low eccentricity interglacial-to-glacial transition could have strengthened the East Asian summer monsoon which favored the amelioration of the eco-environment in the CLP, especially in the eastern CLP where the summer monsoon exerted a strong influence. Thus we speculate that, under natural climatic conditions, the climate of the CLP may remain in a warm, humid state for another 30 kyr, although climatic instability and the seasonal differences between winter and summer could strengthen.

Persistent East Equatorial Pacific Carbon Storage at the Middle Pleistocene Transition

AbstractThe Middle Pleistocene Transition (MPT, ~641–920 ka) represents a period of the Quaternary climate when, in the absence of substantial changes in orbital forcing, the climate progressively shifted to the 100 ka asymmetrical glacial–interglacial cyclicity characterizing the current climate. The causes of this change remain still uncertain but several lines of evidence suggested the carbon storage of the deep ocean played a relevant role. Here we evaluate the contribution of the eastern deep tropical Pacific to the global ocean carbon sequestration and storage between 760 and 1,040 ka. We present multi‐proxy records for export production and the redox environment at the seabed from Ocean Drilling Program Site 1242 located in the deep East Equatorial Pacific. Our data indicate the development of suboxic bottom waters during early marine isotopic stage (MIS) 23 and glacial MIS 22, suggesting the capture and storage of respired carbon. Redox‐sensitive elements suggest the progressive oxygenation of the deep ocean initiated at the end of the glacial MIS 22, continued across deglaciation and ended with the accomplishment of full interglacial MIS 21. We describe this pattern as a “less complete deglacial ventilation” in that it differs from the mid‐late Pleistocene Pacific deep ocean ventilation pattern which occurs during deglaciations. The ventilation of the deep Pacific Ocean extending beyond deglaciation might have contributed to a persistent deep ocean carbon sequestration, which might have resulted in lowered atmospheric CO2 values that could have influenced the internal response of the climate system contributing to the development of the 100 ka climate variability.

Variations in eastern Mediterranean hydrology during the last climatic cycle as inferred from neodymium isotopes in foraminifera

The Nd isotopic compositions (εNd) of mixed planktonic foraminifera have been analyzed in two sediment cores collected in the Nile deep-sea fan in order to reconstruct past εNd of the Eastern Mediterranean Deep Water (EMDW) and to assess the relative contributions of Nile discharge and Modified Atlantic Water (MAW) inflow to the Eastern Mediterranean Sea hydrology, as well as their potential control on anoxic events over the last climatic cycle. The two foraminiferal εNd records are similar and display an increase in εNd values during the African Humid Periods. Superimposed on this precession-forced variability (insolation received by the Earth at low latitudes), the record of variations in foraminiferal εNd indicates a 2-unit decrease in εNd during the interglacial Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 5 and 1 compared to glacial MIS6, 4, 3 and 2. The εNd results suggest that the long-term glacial to interglacial changes in Nd isotopic composition of EMDW were not entirely induced by variations in Nile River discharge and Saharan dust inputs. Decreases in εNd during MIS5 and MIS1 interglacials indicate an increase in the contribution of unradiogenic MAW to the eastern Mediterranean Sea related to high sea-level stands and greater seawater exchange between the North Atlantic and Mediterranean basins. In addition, radiogenic seawater εNd values observed during African Humid Periods (and sapropel events) are associated with an intensification of Nile discharge and an increase in residence time of deep-water masses in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, which induces an increase in the interaction between deep-water masses and radiogenic sediments along the margin of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Results confirm that an intensification of the hydrological exchanges between the western and eastern Mediterranean basins during high sea-level stand and the subsequent higher proportion of Atlantic Water in the Levantine Basin may have preconditioned the eastern Mediterranean Sea to sapropel depositions during the last climatic cycle.
