Extreme Red-wing Enhancements of UV Lines during the 2022 March 30 X1.3 Solar Flare

Here, we present the study of a compact emission source during an X1.3 flare on 2022 March 30. Within a ∼41 s period (17:34:48 UT to 17:35:29 UT), Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph observations show spectral lines of Mg ii, C ii, and Si iv with extremely broadened, asymmetric red wings. This source of interest (SOI) is compact, ∼1.″6, and is located in the wake of a passing ribbon. Two methods were applied to measure the Doppler velocities associated with these red wings: spectral moments and multi-Gaussian fits. The spectral-moments method considers the averaged shift of the lines, which are 85, 125, and 115 km s−1 for the Mg ii, C ii, and Si iv lines respectively. The red-most Gaussian fit suggests a Doppler velocity up to ∼160 km s−1 in all of the three lines. Downward mass motions with such high speeds are very atypical, with most chromospheric downflows in flares on the order 10–100 km s−1. Furthermore, extreme-UV (EUV) emission is strong within flaring loops connecting two flare ribbons located mainly to the east of the central flare region. The EUV loops that connect the SOI and its counterpart source in the opposite field are much less brightened, indicating that the density and/or temperature is comparatively low. These observations suggest a very fast downflowing plasma in the transition region and upper chromosphere, which decelerates rapidly since there is no equivalently strong shift of the O I chromospheric lines. This unusual observation presents a challenge that models of the solar atmosphere’s response to flares must be able to explain.

Multi-wavelength observations and modeling of a microflare: constraining non-thermal particle acceleration

In this work we analyze a small B-class flare that occurred on 29 April 2021 and was observed simultaneously by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) and the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) X-ray instrument. The IRIS observations of the ribbon of the flare show peculiar spectral characteristics that are typical signatures of energy deposition by non-thermal electrons in the lower atmosphere. The presence of the non-thermal particles is also confirmed directly by fitting the NuSTAR spectral observations. We show that, by combining IRIS and NuSTAR multi-wavelength observations from the corona to the lower atmosphere with hydrodynamic simulations using the RADYN code, we can provide strict constraints on electron-beam heated flare models. This work presents the first NuSTAR, IRIS and RADYN joint analysis of a non-thermal microflare, and presents a self-consistent picture of the flare-accelerated electrons in the corona and the chromospheric response to those electrons.

Non-thermal broadening of IRIS Fe XXI line caused by turbulent plasma flows in the magnetic reconnection region during solar eruptions

Magnetic reconnection is the key mechanism for energy release in solar eruptions, where the high-temperature emission is the primary diagnostic for investigating the plasma properties during the reconnection process. Non-thermal broadening of high-temperature lines has been observed in both the reconnection current sheet (CS) and flare loop-top regions by UV spectrometers, but its origin remains unclear. In this work, we use a recently developed three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation to model magnetic reconnection in the standard solar flare geometry and reveal highly dynamic plasma flows in the reconnection regions. We calculate the synthetic profiles of the Fe XXI 1354 Å line observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) spacecraft by using parameters of the MHD model, including plasma density, temperature, and velocity. Our model shows that the turbulent bulk plasma flows in the CS and flare loop-top regions are responsible for the non-thermal broadening of the Fe XXI emission line. The modeled non-thermal velocity ranges from tens of km s−1 to more than two hundred km s−1, which is consistent with the IRIS observations. Simulated 2D spectral line maps around the reconnection region also reveal highly dynamic downwflow structures where the high non-thermal velocity is large, which is consistent with the observations as well.

Recovering Thermodynamics from Spectral Profiles Observed by IRIS. (II). Improved Calculation of the Uncertainties Based on Monte Carlo Experiments

Observations by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) of the Mg ii h & k spectral lines have provided a new diagnostic window toward knowledge of the complex physical conditions in the solar chromosphere. Theoretical efforts focused on understanding the behavior of these lines have allowed us to obtain a better and more accurate vision of the chromosphere. These efforts include forward modeling, numerical simulations, and inversions. In this paper, we focus our attention on the uncertainties associated with the thermodynamic model atmosphere obtained after the inversion of the Mg ii h & k lines. We have used ≈50,000 synthetic representative profiles of the IRIS2 database to characterize the most important sources of uncertainties in the inversion process, viz.: the inherent noise of the observations, the random initialization process, and the selection criteria in a high-dimensional space. We have applied a Monte Carlo approach to this problem. Thus, for a given synthetic representative profile, we have created five randomized noise realizations (representative of the most popular exposure times in the IRIS observations), and inverted these profiles five times with different inversion initializations. The resulting 25 inverted profiles, fit to noisy data, and model atmospheres are then used to determine the uncertainty in the model atmosphere, based on the standard deviation and empirical selection criteria for the goodness of fit. With this approach, the new uncertainties of the models available in the IRIS2 database are more reliable at the optical depths where the Mg ii h & k lines are sensitive to changes in the thermodynamics.

Interrogating solar flare loop models with IRIS observations 2: Plasma properties, energy transport, and future directions

During solar flares a tremendous amount of magnetic energy is released and transported through the Sun’s atmosphere and out into the heliosphere. Despite over a century of study, many unresolved questions surrounding solar flares are still present. Among those are how does the solar plasma respond to flare energy deposition, and what are the important physical processes that transport that energy from the release site in the corona through the transition region and chromosphere? Attacking these questions requires the concert of advanced numerical simulations and high spatial-, temporal-, and spectral-resolution observations. While flares are 3D phenomenon, simulating the NLTE flaring chromosphere in 3D and performing parameter studies of 3D models is largely outwith our current computational capabilities. We instead rely on state-of-the-art 1D field-aligned simulations to study the physical processes that govern flares. Over the last decade, data from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) have provided the crucial observations with which we can critically interrogate the predictions of those flare loop models. Here in Paper 2 of a two-part review of IRIS and flare loop models, I discuss how forward modelling flares can help us understand the observations from IRIS, and how IRIS can reveal where our models do well and where we are likely missing important processes, focussing in particular on the plasma properties, energy transport mechanisms, and future directions of flare modelling.

Interrogating solar flare loop models with IRIS observations 1: Overview of the models, and mass flows

Solar flares are transient yet dramatic events in the atmosphere of the Sun, during which a vast amount of magnetic energy is liberated. This energy is subsequently transported through the solar atmosphere or into the heliosphere, and together with coronal mass ejections flares comprise a fundamental component of space weather. Thus, understanding the physical processes at play in flares is vital. That understanding often requires the use of forward modelling in order to predict the hydrodynamic and radiative response of the solar atmosphere. Those predictions must then be critiqued by observations to show us where our models are missing ingredients. While flares are of course 3D phenomenon, simulating the flaring atmosphere including an accurate chromosphere with the required spatial scales in 3D is largely beyond current computational capabilities, and certainly performing parameter studies of energy transport mechanisms is not yet tractable in 3D. Therefore, field-aligned 1D loop models that can resolve the relevant scales have a crucial role to play in advancing our knowledge of flares. In recent years, driven in part by the spectacular observations from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), flare loop models have revealed many interesting features of flares. For this review I highlight some important results that illustrate the utility of attacking the problem of solar flares with a combination of high quality observations, and state-of-the-art flare loop models, demonstrating: 1) how models help to interpret flare observations from IRIS, 2) how those observations show us where we are missing physics from our models, and 3) how the ever increasing quality of solar observations drives model improvements. Here in Paper one of this two part review I provide an overview of modern flare loop models, and of electron-beam driven mass flows during solar flares.

Blueshifted Si iv 1402.77 Å Line Profiles in a Moving Flare Kernel Observed by IRIS

We analyze the spectra of a slipping flare kernel observed during the 2015 June 22 M6.5-class flare by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). During the impulsive and peak phases of the flare, loops exhibiting an apparent slipping motion along the ribbons were observed in the 131 Å channel of SDO/AIA. The IRIS spectrograph slit observed a portion of the ribbons, including a moving kernel corresponding to a flare loop footpoint in Si iv, C ii, and Mg ii at a very-high 1 s cadence. The spectra observed in the kernel were mostly redshifted and exhibited pronounced red wings, as typically observed in large flares. However, in a small region in one of the ribbons, the Si iv 1402.77 Å line was partially blueshifted, with the corresponding Doppler velocity ∣v D∣ exceeding 50 km s−1. In the same region, the C ii 1334.53, 1335.66, and 1335.71 Å lines were weakly blueshifted (∣v D∣ < 20 km s−1) and showed pronounced blue wings, which were also observed in the Mg ii k 2796.35 Å as well as the Mg ii triplet 2798.75 and 2798.82 Å lines. Using high-cadence AIA observations we found that the region where the blueshifts occurred corresponds to the accelerating kernel front as it moved through a weak field region. The IRIS observations with high resolution allowed us to capture the acceleration of the kernel under the slit for the first time. The unique observations of blueshifted chromospheric and TR lines provide new constraints for current models of flares.

Diagnostics of Non-Maxwellian Electron Distributions in Solar Active Regions from Fe xii Lines Observed by the Hinode Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer and Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph

We present joint Hinode Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) and Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) observations of Fe xii lines in active regions, both on-disk and off-limb. We use an improved calibration for the EIS data, and find that the 192.4 Å/1349 Å observed ratio is consistent with the values predicted by CHIANTI and the coronal approximation in quiescent areas, but not in all active-region observations, where the ratio is often lower than expected by up to a factor of about two. We investigate a number of physical mechanisms that could affect this ratio, such as opacity and absorption from cooler material. We find significant opacity in the EIS Fe xii 193 and 195 Å lines, but not in the 192.4 Å line, in agreement with previous findings. As we cannot rule out possible EUV absorption by H, He, and He ii in the on-disk observations, we focus on an off-limb observation where such absorption is minimal. After considering these, as well as possible nonequilibrium effects, we suggest that the most likely explanation for the observed low Fe xii 192.4 Å/1349 Å ratio is the presence of non-Maxwellian electron distributions in the active regions. This is in agreement with previous findings based on EIS and IRIS observations independently.

Various Activities above Sunspot Light Bridges in IRIS Observations: Classification and Comparison

Abstract Light bridges (LBs) are among the most striking substructures in sunspots, where various activities have been revealed by recent high-resolution observations from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). Based on the variety of their physical properties, we classified these activities into four distinct categories: transient brightening (TB), intermittent jet (IJ), type-I light wall (LW-I), and type-II light wall (LW-II). In IRIS 1400/1330 Å observations, TBs are characterized by abrupt emission enhancements, and IJs appear as collimated plasma ejections with a width of 1–2 Mm at some LB sites. Most observed TBs are associated with IJs and show superpositions of some chromosphere absorption lines on enhanced and broadened wings of C ii and Si iv lines, which could be driven by intermittent magnetic reconnection in the lower atmosphere. LW-I and LW-II are wall-shaped structures with bright fronts above the whole LB. An LW-I has a continuous oscillating front with a typical height of several Mm and an almost stationary period of 4–5 minutes. On the contrary, an LW-II has an indented front with a height of over 10 Mm, which has no stable period and is accompanied by recurrent TBs in the entire LB. These results support that LW-IIs are driven by frequent reconnection occurring along the entire LB due to large-scale magnetic flux emergence or intrusion, rather than the leakage of waves producing LW-Is. Our observations reveal a highly dynamical scenario of activities above LBs driven by different basic physical processes, including magnetoconvection, magnetic reconnection, and wave leakage.

Solar Jets: SDO and IRIS Observations in the Perspective of New MHD Simulations

Solar jets are observed as collimated plasma beams over a large range of temperatures and wavelengths. They have been observed in H α and optical lines for more than 50 years and called surges. The term “jet” comes from X-ray observations after the launch of the Yohkoh satellite in 1991. They are the means of transporting energy through the heliosphere and participate to the corona heating and the acceleration of solar wind. Several characteristics have been derived about their velocities, their rates of occurrence, and their relationship with CMEs. However, the initiation mechanism of jets, e.g. emerging flux, flux cancellation, or twist, is still debated. In the last decade coordinated observations of the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) with the instruments on board the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO) allow to make a step forward for understanding the trigger of jets and the relationship between hot jets and cool surges. We observe at the same time the development of 2D and 3D MHD numerical simulations to interpret the results. This paper summarizes recent studies of jets showing the loci of magnetic reconnection in null points or in bald patch regions forming a current sheet. In the pre-jet phase a twist is frequently detected by the existence of a mini filament close to the dome of emerging flux. The twist can also be transferred to the jet from a flux rope in the vicinity of the reconnection by slippage of the polarities. Bidirectional flows are detected at the reconnection sites. We show the role of magnetic currents detected in the footprints of flux rope and quasi-separatrix layers for initiating the jets. We select a few studies and show that with the same observations, different interpretations are possible based on different approaches e.g. non linear force free field extrapolation or 3D MHD simulation.

The center-to-limb variation of non-thermal velocities using IRIS Si IV

Abstract We study the non-thermal velocities in the quiet-sun using various high spatial, temporal, and spectral resolution observations from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). We focus our analysis on the transition region using the optically thin line (Si iv 1393.7 Å), and select line profiles that are nearly Gaussian. We find evidence of a centre-to-limb variation using different observations having different exposure times, ranging from 5-30 s. The distribution of non-thermal velocities close to the limb are observed to peak around 20 km s−1 while the disc observations show a peak around 15 km s−1. The distributions are also different. The overall variation in the non-thermal velocities are correlated with the intensity of the line, as found previously. The on-disc velocities are smaller than most previous observations. In general, we find that the non-thermal velocities are independent of the selected exposure times. The Si iv lines didn’t seem to exhibit any significant opacity effects. We conclude that these Doppler motions are mostly transverse to the radial direction. The possibility of swaying/torsional motions leading to such variations are validated from these IRIS observations.

Solar jets observed with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS)

Solar jets are impulsive, collimated plasma ejections that are triggered by magnetic reconnection. They are observed for many decades in various temperatures and wavelengths, therefore their kinematic characteristics, such as velocity and recurrence, have been extensively studied. Nevertheless, the high spatial resolution of the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) launched in 2013 allowed us to make a step forward in the understanding of the relationship between surges and hot jets. In this paper we report on several results of recent studies of jets observed by IRIS. Cool and hot plasma have been detected with ejections of cool blobs having a speed reaching 300 km s−1 during the impulsive phase of jet formation and slow velocity surges surrounding hot jets after the reconnection phase. Plasma characteristics of solar jets, such as the emission measure, temperature, and density have been quantified. A multi-layer atmosphere at the reconnection site based on observed IRIS spectra has been proposed. IRIS evidenced bidirectional flows at reconnection sites, and tilt along the spectra which were interpreted as the signature of twist in jets. The search of possible sites for reconnection could be achieved by the analysis of magnetic topology. Combining Solar Dynamics Observatory/Helioseismic Magnetic Imager (SDO/HMI) vector magnetograms and IRIS observations, it was found that reconnection site could be located at null points in the corona as well as in bald patch regions low in the photosphere. In one case study a magnetic sketch could explain the initiation of a jet starting in a bald patch transformed to a current sheet in a dynamical way, and the transfer of twist from a flux rope to the jet during the magnetic reconnection process.

Spectral Evolution of an Eruptive Polar Crown Prominence With IRIS Observations

Prominence eruption is closely related to coronal mass ejections and is an important topic in solar physics. Spectroscopic observation is an effective way to explore the plasma properties, but the spectral observations of eruptive prominences are rare. In this paper we will introduce an eruptive polar crown prominence with spectral observations from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), and try to explain some phenomena that are rarely reported in previous works. The eruptive prominence experiences a slow-rise and fast-rise phase, while the line-of-sight motions of the prominence plasma could be divided into three periods: 2 hours before the fast-rise phase, opposite Doppler shifts are found at the two sides of the prominence axis; then, red shifts dominate the prominence gradually; in the fast-rise phase, the prominence gets to be blue-shifted. During the second period, a faint component appears in Mg ii k window with a narrow line width and a large red shift. A faint region is also found in AIA 304Å images along the prominence spine, and the faint region gets darker during the expansion of the spine. We propose that the opposite Doppler shifts in the first period is a feature of the polar crown prominence that we studied. The red shifts in the second period are possibly due to mass drainage during the elevation of the prominence spine, which could accelerate the eruption in return. The blue shifts in the third period are due to that the prominence erupts toward the observer. We suggest that the faint component appears due to the decreasing of the plasma density, and the latter results from the expansion of the prominence spine.

IRIS observations of chromospheric heating by acoustic waves in solar quiet and active regions

Aims. To study the heating of solar chromospheric magnetic and nonmagnetic regions by acoustic and magnetoacoustic waves, the deposited acoustic-energy flux derived from observations of strong chromospheric lines is compared with the total integrated radiative losses. Methods. A set of 23 quiet-Sun and weak-plage regions were observed in the Mg II k and h lines with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). The deposited acoustic-energy flux was derived from Doppler velocities observed at two different geometrical heights corresponding to the middle and upper chromosphere. A set of scaled nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium 1D hydrostatic semi-empirical models – obtained by fitting synthetic to observed line profiles – was applied to compute the radiative losses. The characteristics of observed waves were studied by means of a wavelet analysis. Results. Observed waves propagate upward at supersonic speed. In the quiet chromosphere, the deposited acoustic flux is sufficient to balance the radiative losses and maintain the semi-empirical temperatures in the layers under study. In the active-region chromosphere, the comparison shows that the contribution of acoustic-energy flux to the radiative losses is only 10−30%. Conclusions. Acoustic and magnetoacoustic waves play an important role in the chromospheric heating, depositing a main part of their energy in the chromosphere. Acoustic waves compensate for a substantial fraction of the chromospheric radiative losses in quiet regions. In active regions, their contribution is too small to balance the radiative losses and the chromosphere has to be heated by other mechanisms.

Small-scale Bright Blobs Ejected from a Sunspot Light Bridge

Abstract Light bridges (LBs) are bright lanes that divide an umbra into multiple parts in some sunspots. Persistent oscillatory bright fronts at a temperature of ∼105 K are commonly observed above LBs in the 1400/1330 Å passbands of the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). Based on IRIS observations, we report small-scale bright blobs ejected from the oscillating bright front above a light bridge. Some of these blobs reveal a clear acceleration, whereas the others do not. The average speed of these blobs projected onto the plane of sky is 71.7 ± 14.7 km s−1, with an initial acceleration of 1.9 ± 1.3 km s−2. These blobs normally reach a projected distance of 3–7 Mm from their origin sites. They have an average projected area of 0.57 ± 0.37 Mm2. The blobs were also detected in multiple extreme-ultraviolet passbands of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory, but not in the Hα images taken by the New Vacuum Solar Telescope. The typical temperature and electron density of these blobs are around K and cm−3, respectively. The estimated kinetic and thermal energies are on the order of erg and erg, respectively. These small-scale blobs appear to show three different types of formation processes. They are possibly triggered by induced reconnection or release of enhanced magnetic tension due to interaction of adjacent shocks, local magnetic reconnection between emerging magnetic bipoles on the light bridge and surrounding unipolar umbral fields, and plasma acceleration or instability caused by upward shocks, respectively.

ALMA and IRIS Observations of the Solar Chromosphere. II. Structure and Dynamics of Chromospheric Plages

Abstract We propose and employ a novel empirical method for determining chromospheric plage regions, which seems to better isolate a plage from its surrounding regions than other methods commonly used. We caution that isolating a plage from its immediate surroundings must be done with care in order to successfully mitigate statistical biases that, for instance, can impact quantitative comparisons between different chromospheric observables. Using this methodology, our analysis suggests that λ = 1.25 mm free–free emission in plage regions observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA)/Band6 may not form in the low chromosphere as previously thought, but rather in the upper chromospheric parts of dynamic plage features (such as spicules and other bright structures), i.e., near geometric heights of transition-region temperatures. We investigate the high degree of similarity between chromospheric plage features observed in ALMA/Band6 (at 1.25 mm wavelengths) and the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS)/Si iv at 1393 Å. We also show that IRIS/Mg ii h and k are not as well correlated with ALMA/Band6 as was previously thought, and we discuss discrepancies with previous works. Lastly, we report indications of chromospheric heating due to propagating shocks supported by the ALMA/Band6 observations.

IRIS Observations of the Low-atmosphere Counterparts of Active Region Outflows

Abstract Active region (AR) outflows have been studied in detail since the launch of Hinode/EIS and are believed to provide a possible source of mass and energy to the slow solar wind. In this work, we investigate the lower atmospheric counterpart of AR outflows using observations from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). We find that the IRIS Si iv, C ii, and Mg ii transition region (TR) and chromospheric lines exhibit different spectral features in the outflows as compared to neighboring regions at the footpoints (“moss”) of hot AR loops. The average redshift of Si iv in the outflow region (≈5.5 km s−1) is smaller than typical moss (≈12–13 km s−1) and quiet Sun (≈7.5 km s−1) values, while the C ii line is blueshifted (≈-1.1–1.5 km s−1), in contrast to the moss where it is observed to be redshifted by about ≈2.5 km s−1. Further, we observe that the low atmosphere underneath the coronal outflows is highly structured, with the presence of blueshifts in Si iv and positive Mg ii k2 asymmetries (which can be interpreted as signatures of chromospheric upflows) which are mostly not observed in the moss. These observations show a clear correlation between the coronal outflows and the chromosphere and TR underneath, which has not been shown before. Our work strongly suggests that these regions are not separate environments and should be treated together, and that current leading theories of AR outflows, such as the interchange reconnection model, need to take into account the dynamics of the low atmosphere.

The High Helium Abundance and Charge States of the Interplanetary CME and Its Material Source on the Sun

Abstract Identifying the source of the material within coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and understanding CME onset mechanisms are fundamental issues in solar and space physics. Parameters relating to plasma composition, such as charge states and He abundance (A He), may be different for plasmas originating from differing processes or regions on the Sun. Thus, it is crucial to examine the relationship between in situ measurements of CME composition and activity on the Sun. We study the CME that erupted on 2014 September 10, in association with an X1.6 flare, by analyzing Atmospheric Imaging Assembly imaging and Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) spectroscopic observations and its in situ signatures detected by Wind and Advanced Composition Explorer. We find that during the slow expansion and intensity increase of the sigmoid, plasma temperatures of 9 MK, and higher, first appear at the footpoints of the sigmoid, associated with chromospheric brightening. Then the high-temperature region extends along the sigmoid. IRIS observations confirm that this extension is caused by transportation of hot plasma upflow. Our results show that chromospheric material can be heated to 9 MK, and above, by chromospheric evaporation at the sigmoid footpoints before flare onset. The heated chromospheric material can transport into the sigmoidal structure and supply mass to the CME. The aforementioned CME mass supply scenario provides a reasonable explanation for the detection of high charge states and elevated A He in the associated interplanetary CME. The observations also demonstrate that the quasi-steady evolution in the precursor phase is dominated by magnetic reconnection between the rising flux rope and the overlying magnetic field structure.

Waves propagation in network and inter-network bright points channels between the chromosphere and transition regions with IRIS observations

The significance increase of the plasma temperature from the solar photosphere to the corona up to 1MK is still unresolved. One of the candidates for this issue is waves and instabilities in the solar plasma. It was suggested that the energy of these waves could heat the solar atmosphere to transition-region (TR) and corona. Despite many recent kind of researches about waves in the various solar dynamic structures, the reasons for the sudden rise of solar atmospheric temperature are still not enough. By using the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) telescope observations, we investigate the waves in magnetic tubes such as UV bright points (BPs) at the boundary and inside the supper-granules. The Study of these dynamic structures, between the chromosphere and transition region, will impressively increase our information of mass and energy transportation through interface region between the chromosphere and inner corona. The magnetic BPs are the faces of magnetic flux tubes that are associated with magnetic elements. The magnetic flux tubes expand upward and appear as bright grains that make up the chromospheric network. For investigating periodical behavior of these structures and various aspect of these oscillations, we analyze intensity oscillations individually in IRIS slit-jaw images at three filters included 2796 A, 1400 A and 1330 A by the wavelet analysis method. The wavelet analysis of the intensity fluctuations of these points showed periods from 2 to 8 min, which are in order of the frequencies of the atmospheric pressure modes. For investigating wave propagation in these layers we also study the correlation of oscillations between chromosphere (2796 A) and TR (1400 A and 1330 A) heights by cross wavelet method, and found that these heights correlate with periods between 2.5 and 5.5 min, with wave speeds from 30 to 200 km s−1. Also, by extracting Si IV line, we determined the Doppler velocity of BPs in the network and inter-network as about −20 to +30 km s−1 and −21 to +21 km s−1, respectively. Our results suggest that the wave propagation along the magnetic flux tubes of upward-moving plasma in BPs have an important role in solar atmosphere heating.

IRIS Observations of Short-term Variability in Moss Associated with Transient Hot Coronal Loops

Abstract We observed rapid variability (≲60 s) at the footpoints of transient, hot (∼8–10 MK) coronal loops in active region cores, with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). The high spatial (∼0.″33) and temporal (≲5–10 s) resolution of IRIS is often crucial for the detection of this variability. We show how, in combination with 1D RADYN loop modeling, these IRIS spectral observations of the transition region (TR) and chromosphere provide powerful diagnostics of the properties of coronal heating and energy transport (thermal conduction or nonthermal electrons, NTEs). Our simulations of nanoflare-heated loops indicate that emission in the Mg ii triplet can be used as a sensitive diagnostic for nonthermal particles. In our events, we observe a large variety of IRIS spectral properties (intensity, Doppler shifts, broadening, chromospheric/TR line ratios, Mg ii triplet emission) even for different footpoints of the same coronal events. In several events, we find spectroscopic evidence for NTEs (e.g., TR blueshifts and Mg ii triplet emission), suggesting that particle acceleration can occur even for very small magnetic reconnection events, which are generally below the detection threshold of hard X-ray instruments that provide direct detection of emission of nonthermal particles.
