Challenge of electronic health record interface: literature review

Abstract. Electronic Health Record (EHR) differences from the traditional patient medical history in which everything related to the patients past visits and records such as family history or lab results are being stored electronically. This system is supposed to innovate the world of healthcare into the next step as it intends to provide different advantages such as ensure transparency cross different medical institute and enhance quality of care. However, due to the lack of different aspects, there are some major flaws with HER. This literature review explores the challenges of EHR interface design and its impact on healthcare providers across various medical settings. The paper demonstrates through research that the significant effects of EHR usability on provider efficiency and error rates, highlighting a notable disconnect between the design of these systems and the practical needs of their users. In addition, the review reveals a critical need for user-centered EHR interfaces, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts among clinicians, developers, and healthcare organizations. Based on a synthesizes findings from diverse studies, this paper advocate for EHR systems that are not only technically proficient but also intuitively aligned with healthcare providers' workflows, ultimately aiming to enhance clinical outcomes and operational efficiency.

Interface-Engineered CuxO@Bi2MoO6 Heterojunctions to Inhibit Piezoelectric Screening Effect and Promote Double-Nanozyme Catalysis for Antibacterial Treatment.

Sonodynamic therapy is confronted with the low acoustic efficiency of sonosensitizers, and nanozymes are accompanied by intrinsic low catalytic activity. Herein, to increase the piezopotential of N-type piezoelectric semiconductors, the P-N heterojunction is designed to inhibit the piezoelectric screening effect (PSE) and increase electron utilization efficiency to enhance nanozyme activity. P-type CuxO nanoparticles are in situ grown on N-type piezoelectric Bi2MoO6 (BMO) nanoflakes (NFs) to construct heterostructured CuxO@BMO by interface engineering. CuxO deposition leads to lattice distortion of BMO NFs to improve piezoelectric response, and the strong interface electric field (IEF) suppresses PSE and increases piezopotential. The nonlocal piezopotential, local IEF, and glutathione (GSH) inoculation enhances electron-hole separation and increases peroxidase (POD)-like activity of BMO and GSH oxidase (GSHOx)-like activity of CuxO with high selectivity. The heterojunction formation causes the transfer and rearrangement of interface electrons, and the increased piezopotential accelerates electron transfer at interfaces with bacteria, thus increasing the production of reactive oxidative species and interfering with adenosine triphosphate synthesis. The heterostructured nanozymes produce abundant intracellular ·OH and achieve 4log magnitude reductions in viable bacteria and effective biofilm dispersion. This study elucidates integral mechanisms of nanozyme and acoustic catalysis and opens up a new way to synergize high piezopotential and nanozyme-catalyzed therapy.

Cyclodextrin Metal-Organic Framework Functionalized Carbon Materials with Optimized Interface Electronics and Selective Supramolecular Channels for High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

During the reaction process in lithium-sulfur batteries, Lewis acidic lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) affect ion distribution and overall electrolyte stability, degrading battery performance and product distribution (e.g., Li2S). Here, a microenvironment regulation strategy with optimized interface electronics and selective supramolecular channels, is proposed to enhance LiPS reaction kinetics through Lewis basic γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (γ-CDMOF). To validate this concept, γ-CDMOF is rapidly synthesized on 3D graphene foam (GF) via a microwave-assisted method, resulting in a γ-CDMOF/GF cathode for high-performance Li-S batteries. A range of analytical techniques combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that introducing a Lewis basic supramolecular microenvironment mitigates the LiPSs shuttle effect, enhances polysulfide capture, and improves sulfur redox conversion. Additionally, COMSOL simulations reveal that the γ-CDMOF framework and oxygen sites significantly reduce volumetric expansion stress during the LiPS solid-liquid phase transition. Impressively, the γ-CDMOF/GF cathode exhibits exceptional performance, including a high specific capacity (1253.01 mAh g⁻¹ at 0.1C), excellent rate performance (589.68 mAh g⁻¹ at 5C), and long cycle life (over 1200 cycles). This study introduces a new concept of supramolecular microenvironment regulation and interfacial interaction strategy, offering a unique approach for the development of multifunctional electrode materials.

Intracellular Gold Nanocluster/Organic Semiconductor Heterostructure for Enhancing Photosynthesis

AbstractPhotosynthetic microorganisms, which rely on light‐driven electron transfer, store solar energy in self‐energy carriers and convert it into bioenergy. Although these microorganisms can operate light‐induced charge separation with nearly 100 % quantum efficiency, their practical applications are inherently limited by the photosynthetic energy conversion efficiency. Artificial semiconductors can induce an electronic response to photoexcitation, providing additional excited electrons for natural photosynthesis to improve solar conversion efficiency. However, challenges remain in importing exogenous electrons across cell membranes. In this work, we have developed an engineered gold nanocluster/organic semiconductor heterostructure (AuNCs@OFTF) to couple the intracellular electron transport chain of living cyanobacteria. AuNCs@OFTF exhibits a prolonged excited state lifetime and effective charge separation. The internalized AuNCs@OFTF permits its photogenerated electrons to participate in the downstream of photosystem II and construct an oriented electronic highway, which enables a five‐fold increase in photocurrent in living cyanobacteria. Moreover, the binding events of AuNCs@OFTF established an abiotic‐biotic electronic interface at the thylakoid membrane to enhance electron flux and finally furnished nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate. Thus, AuNCs@OFTF can be exploited to spatiotemporally manipulate and enhance the solar conversion of living cyanobacteria in cells, providing an extended nanotechnology for re‐engineering photosynthetic pathways.

Recent Progress on Cross-Linkable Fullerene-Based Electron Transport Materials for Perovskite Solar Cells.

Fullerene-based derivatives are frequently used as electron transport materials (ETMs) and interface buffers for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to their excellent properties, including high electron affinity and mobility, low recombination energy, tunable energy levels, and solution processability. However, significant challenges arise because fullerene derivatives tend to aggregate and dimerize, which reduces exciton dissociation and charge transport capacity. Additionally, their chemical compatibility with perovskite absorbers facilitates halide diffusion and degradation of PSCs. This overlap causes delamination and dissolution during device fabrication, hindering the performance enhancement of fullerene-based PSCs. To address these issues, researchers have developed cross-linkable fullerene materials. These materials have been shown to not only significantly improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs but also effectively enhance the device stability. In this review, we summarized recent research progress on cross-linkable fullerene derivatives as ETMs for PSCs. We systematically analyze the impact of these cross-linked ETMs on device performance and long-term stability, focusing on their molecular structures and working mechanisms. Finally, we discuss the future challenges that need to be overcome to advance the application of cross-linkable fullerene materials in PSCs.

Replacing the Gallium Oxide Shell with Conductive Ag: Toward a Printable and Recyclable Composite for Highly Stretchable Electronics, Electromagnetic Shielding, and Thermal Interfaces.

Liquid metal (LM)-based composites hold promise for soft electronics due to their high conductivity and fluidic nature. However, the presence of α-Ga2O3 and GaOOH layers around LM droplets impairs conductivity and performance. We tackle this issue by replacing the oxide layer with conductive silver (Ag) using an ultrasonic-assisted galvanic replacement reaction. The Ag-coated nanoparticles form aggregated, porous microparticles that are mixed with styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) polymers, resulting in a digitally printable composite with superior electrical conductivity and electromechanical properties compared to conventional fillers. Adding more LM enhances these properties further. The composite achieves EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) exceeding 75 dB in the X-band frequency range, even at 200% strain, meeting stringent military and medical standards. It is applicable in wireless communications and Bluetooth signal blocking and as a thermal interface material (TIM). Additionally, we highlight its recyclability using a biodegradable solvent, underscoring its eco-friendly potential. This composite represents a significant advancement in stretchable electronics and EMI shielding, with implications for wearable and bioelectronic applications.

Solar PV powered DC charger for electric vehicles with reconfigurable power electronic interface

ABSTRACT Global expansion of the EV market has led to widespread DC charging infrastructure. Consumers prefer DC charging over AC to reduce charging time per kilometer. However, grid-connected DC chargers can cause issues such as grid instability, power quality problems, demand imbalance, and conversion losses. This paper proposes an off-grid photovoltaic (PV) fed DC charger for EVs along with a battery energy storage system (BESS) to mitigate these challenges. The work aims to increase the use of clean energy for EV charging, to ensure uninterrupted EV charging with minimum power conversion stages, and to improve PV utilization. BESS serves as a backup power source that charges or discharges based on PV availability. Additionally, the system powers the non-critical adjustable loads of domestic/industrial sites with the available PV power when both EV and BESS are fully charged. The system can be reconfigured to operate in six distinct modes using two DC-DC converters and five relays. Among six modes, four modes operate in single-stage power conversion. A buck converter is used to extract power from PV. A bidirectional buck-boost converter is used to charge and discharge the BESS. The proposed system is validated through hardware prototype for both steady-state and transient conditions.

Valence electron matching law for MXene-based single-atom catalysts

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted considerable interest in the fields of energy and environmental science due to their adjustable catalytic activity. In this study, we investigated the matching of valence electron numbers between single atoms and adsorbed intermediates (O, N, C, and H) in MXene-anchored SACs (M-Ti2C/M-Ti2CO2). The density functional theory results demonstrated that the sum of the valence electron number (VM) of the interface-doped metal and the valence electron number (VA) of the adsorbed intermediates in M-Ti2C followed the 10-valence electron matching law. Furthermore, based on the 10-valence electron matching law, we deduced that the sum of the valence electron number (k) and VM for the molecular adsorption intermediate interactions in M-Ti2CO2 adhered to the 11-valence electron matching law. Electrostatic repulsion between the interface electrons in M-Ti2CO2 and H2O weakened the adsorption of intermediates. Furthermore, we applied the 11-valence electron matching law to guide the design of catalysts for nitrogen reduction reaction, specifically for N2 → NNH conversion, in the M-Ti2CO2 structure. The sure independence screening and sparsifying operator algorithm was used to fit a simple three-dimensional descriptor of the adsorbate (R2 up to 0.970) for catalyst design. Our study introduced a valence electron matching principle between doped metals (single atoms) and adsorbed intermediates (atomic and molecular) for MXene-based catalysts, providing new insights into the design of high-performance SACs.

Confined synthesis of ultrafine NiCu nanoalloy anchored nanoflower derived from natural attapulgite for efficient catalytic hydrogenation of p-nitrophenol

Improving the performance of catalysts through precise microstructural design is important for their applications. Herein, a series of nanoflower-shaped NiCu nanoalloy/nickel-copper silicate (NiCuSi)/attapulgite (ATP) nanocomposite catalysts was successfully constructed. Initially, the NiCuSi/ATP substrates were prepared using Ni2+ and Cu2+ ions to induce the epitaxial growth of acid-leached ATP. Afterwards, the domain-limited Ni2+ and Cu2+ ions in the silicon framework of NiCuSi were transformed to ultra-small NiCu nanoalloy particles (∼5.71 nm) through an in-situ reduction process. Due to the unique morphology and structure, the catalyst exhibited a specific surface area of up to 227.05 m2/g, which exposed abundant active sites to contact with the reactant molecules. The uniformly dispersed ultra-small NiCu nanoalloys effectively promoted the rapid transfer of interface electrons, resulting in excellent catalytic efficiency of the catalyst. Its catalytic reduction rate for PNP is as high as 0.374 s−1, equivalent to those of the precious metal catalysts, and the excellent catalytic efficiency remains at 98.53 % even after 10 cycles. This study provides a universal and efficient method to develop highly active and stably nanocomposite catalysts from natural and green carries.

In-Situ Construction of Atomic-Level Fe-O Bond Bridges within Fe2N/g-C3N4 Heterojunction for Efficient Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic H2 Production.

The limited active sites and faster photogenerated electron-hole pair recombination rate of g-C3N4 restrict its application in photocatalytic H2 production. Constructing heterojunctions has been shown to improve the spatial (directional) separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. However, due to interface mismatch in traditional heterojunction structures and a lack of precise electron transport channels, the photocatalytic efficiency is limited. Here, we developed a two-step calcination approach to create an Fe2N/g-C3N4 heterojunction linked by Fe-O bonds (named as Fe-OCN). The newly formed Fe-O bonds within the heterojunction can act as atomic-level interface electron transfer channels, directly transferring the photogenerated electrons of g-C3N4 to the reactive center Fe2N, significantly improving the charge transfer rate and utilization, thus promoting visible-light-driven photocatalytic H2 production. The optimal Fe-OCN achieved a H2 production rate of 5986.29 μmol g-1 h-1 under visible light, 13.44 times higher than that of the OCN due to efficient charge separation and transfer capabilities. This work provides a constructive reference for the design and synthesis of organic-inorganic heterojunction with chemically bonded interfaces, establishing quick electron transfer channels, and achieving targeted electron transfer.

Magnetoelectric Phase Control at Domain‐Wall‐Like Epitaxial Oxide Multilayers

AbstractFerroelectric domain walls are nanoscale objects that can be created, positioned, and erased on demand. They often embody functional properties that are distinct from the surrounding bulk material. Enhanced conductivity, for instance, is observed at charged ferroelectric domain walls. Regrettably, domain walls of this type are scarce because of the energetically unfavorable electrostatics. This hinders the current technological development of domain‐wall nanoelectronics. Here this constraint is overcome by creating robust domain‐wall‐like objects in epitaxial oxide heterostructures. Charged head‐to‐head (HH) and tail‐to‐tail (TT) junctions are designed with two ferroelectric layers (BaTiO3 and BiFeO3) that have opposing out‐of‐plane polarization. To test domain‐wall‐like functionalities, an ultrathin ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 layer is inserted into the junctions. The interfacial electron or hole accumulation at the interfaces, set by the HH and TT polarization configurations, respectively, controls the LSMO conductivity and magnetization. Thus it is proposed that trilayers reminiscent of artificial domain walls provide magnetoelectric functionality and may constitute an important building block in the design of oxide‐based electronic devices.

An active electronic, high-density epidural paddle array for chronic spinal cord neuromodulation.

Objective: Epidural electrical stimulation (EES) has shown promise as both a clinical therapy and research tool for studying nervous system function. However, available clinical EES paddles are limited to using a small number of contacts due to the burden of wires necessary to connect each contact to the therapeutic delivery device, limiting the treatment area or density of epidural electrode arrays. We aimed to eliminate this burden using advanced on-paddle electronics. Approach: We developed a smart EES paddle with a 60-electrode programmable array, addressable using an active electronic multiplexer embedded within the electrode paddle body. The electronics are sealed in novel, ultra-low profile hermetic packaging. We conducted extensive reliability testing on the novel array, including a battery of ISO 10993-1 biocompatibility tests and determination of the hermetic package leak rate. We then evaluated the EES device in vivo, placed on the epidural surface of the ovine lumbosacral spinal cord for 15 months. Main results: The active paddle array performed nominally when implanted in sheep for over 15 months and no device-related malfunctions were observed. The onboard multiplexer enabled bespoke electrode arrangements across, and within, experimental sessions. We identified stereotyped responses to stimulation in lower extremity musculature, and examined local field potential responses to EES using high-density recording bipoles. Finally, spatial electrode encoding enabled machine learning models to accurately perform EES parameter inference for unseen stimulation electrodes, reducing the need for extensive training data in future deep models. Significance: We report the development and chronic large animal in vivo evaluation of a high-density EES paddle array containing active electronics. Our results provide a foundation for more advanced computation and processing to be integrated directly into devices implanted at the neural interface, opening new avenues for the study of nervous system function and new therapies to treat neural injury and dysfunction.

Highly Efficient Sunlight‐Driven Photocatalytic Activity of Cu‐Doped BiOBr/g‐C3N4 Nanocomposite via Z‐Scheme Design

AbstractPharmaceutical pollutants introduce highly intricate compounds into the environment due to extensive structural and functional alterations resulting in adverse health effects on organisms. Herein, a novel nanocomposite is designed comprising Cu‐doped BiOBr nanoflakes and g‐C3N4 to form a dual absorber based on the organic‐inorganic electronic interface for photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC). With incorporating Cu in BiOBr and compositing with g‐C3N4, the band gap decreased from 2.74 eV to 2.36 eV for BiOBr:Cu/g‐C3N4, and also light harvesting ability increased. The investigation into the degradation rate considered factors such as pH, TC concentration, photocatalyst dosage, and irradiation time, resulting in a TC degradation efficiency of 98 % within 60 min. In the prepared nanocomposite, photo‐generated electrons of BiOBr can recombine via Cu atoms as a mediator with holes in the valence band of g‐C3N4 due to their band structure position which leads to improved electron/hole separation and enhanced photocatalytic activity. The predominant active species involved in the degradation process were found to be superoxide radicals. Additionally, the photocatalyst exhibited excellent stability, retaining 88 % of its photocatalytic activity after four cycles.

Introducing deep trap states for high dielectric strength of aramid‐based composite films

AbstractAramid nanofiber (ANF)‐based composites have drawn tremendous interest in high‐voltage electrical systems due to their superior insulation strength, thermal stability, and mechanical endurance. However, the filler agglomeration and interface compatibility have retarded further improvement of the dielectric performance. Herein, the nano‐titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles treated by aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) serve as the inorganic fillers, which are doped in the ANF to prepare the composite nano‐paper via the blade coating method. The electrostatic interaction between the ANF and fillers highly promotes their uniform distribution. Compared to the pure ANF paper, the composite paper has a denser structure with reduced pores and defects, which significantly improves its dielectric performance with inhibited partial discharge development. At a filler loading of 3 wt% (mass fraction), the breakdown strength is increased by 70.5% to a maximum value of 358.1 kV/mm, while the bulk conductivity is minimised to 5.2 × 10−17 S/m, representing an 88.1% decrease. By analysing the energy band structure of each component, energy barriers at the interface for electrons (1.48 eV) and holes (0.40 eV) are determined. These values indicate deepened trap energy levels, which greatly strengthen the carrier trapping effect for improved dielectric performance.

Efficient electron transport at the perovskite nanodots interface facilitates CO2 photoreduction

How to achieve controllable preparation of heterostructure and in-situ optimize the interface and internal electron transfer by a fast and economic synthesis method has become a big challenge in the practical application of photocatalysis. Herein, an island-shaped SrTiO3 (STO) perovskite nanodots and TiO2 (T) compounded S-scheme SrTiO3/TiO2 (ST) heterostructure was successfully developed. During the millisecond reaction process, the decomposed Sr2+ penetrated into the TiO2 lattice causing the lattice expansion and inducing local atomic rearrangements, resulting in the generation of STO phase. Owing to the synergy of the efficient electron transport at the perovskite nanodots interface and the stronger reduction capacity, the performance of the optimized ST1 sample is greatly improved to 86.90 μmol g−1 for CO2-to-CO and 21.31 μmol g−1 for CO2-to-CH4. The utilization of electrons reached up to 119.74 μmol g−1 h−1, which was 3.13 times higher than that of T. Detailed characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations proof that the formation of intermediates HCOO− and CO32− is the key to the performance improvement critically. Overall, this work originally reports a feasible strategy for flame synthesis of S-scheme heterostructure photocatalyst.

Wind pumping with possibility to eliminate the power electronicsbay

In this article, we propose an application which resides in wind pumping, in particular the possibility to eliminate the power electronics interface. This fact is based on the exploitation of the torque-speed characteristic of the centrifugal type pump. The pumping system proposed in this article is made up of a three-blade turbine, two permanent magnets synchronous machines, one of which plays the role of the generator and the other motor driving the centrifugal pump. The good choice of machines and the centrifugal pump made possible the operation of the system of pumping with elimination of the static converter.The mathematical model to eliminate the static converter is developed and presented, implemented and simulated in the Matlab/Simulink environment.The simulation results obtained are validated by comparison with other simulation results of a wind pumping system with the presence of the power electronics interface.

Dual polarization in CoMoO4-NiMoO4 heterojunction boosted electrochemical charge storage

Binary transition metal oxides (BTMOs) stand out as a focal point due to their distinctive electrochemical properties. However, they encounter challenges like low conductivity and limited active sites. To tackle these obstacles, we have meticulously designed a CoMoO4-NiMoO4 (CMNM) heterostructure featuring significant compressive-tensile strain. This design facilitates the robust integration of CoMoO4 (CM) and NiMoO4 (NM), initiating interfacial polarization, and establishing a built-in electric field (BIEF) that significantly enhances electron transfer between the phases. Moreover, the strain serves as a driving force for the electric field, promoting the rearrangement of interface electrons and further boosting interfacial polarization. This avant-garde approach propels the CMNM electrode to achieve a remarkable specific capacity of 530.45 C g−1 at 1 A g−1, maintaining 327 C g−1 even at 10 A g−1, thus showcasing a superior rate capability. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor employing CMNM as the positive and FeOOH as the negative achieves a high energy density of 78.9 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 927.02 W kg−1. Our methodology, leveraging heterostructures coupled with the interfacial strain tactics, paves a novel avenue for high-performance supercapacitors.

Nitrogen-doped ZnIn2S4 and TPA multi-dimensional synergistically enhance photocatalytic hydrogen production

To alleviate the environmental pollution and energy crisis caused by the excessive use of fossil fuels, photocatalytic water splitting to produce hydrogen is an important way to solve energy and environmental problems. Here, Nitrogen-doped ZnIn2S4 (N-ZIS) composite tungsten-based polyoxometalate (TPA) composites (denoted as N-ZIS/TPA) were synthesized by a one-step solvothermal method. The introduction of N3– instead of S2− in ZIS changes the internal electron arrangement of ZIS, improves the electronegativity of ZIS, and is conducive to the surface adsorption of positively charged H*. At the same time, the impurity energy level is generated at the valence band position, which narrows the band gap and broadens the light absorption range, thereby promoting photocatalytic hydrogen production. After compounding, due to the adjustable redox properties of TPA itself, the internal W6+ part is reduced to W4+, resulting in the coexistence of W6+ and W4+ in the composite material, which fully verifies the flow of interface electrons from N-ZIS to TPA. The close contact between N-ZIS and TPA and the built-in electric field’s driving force help achieve efficient interfacial charge transfer. At the same time, W6+/W4+ redox pairs were introduced to accelerate the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. The photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of the best sample 1N-ZIS/TPA-15 is as high as 17345.53 μmol·g−1·h−1, which is 2.92 times that of N-ZIS (5940.08 μmol·g−1·h−1) and 8.03 times that of ZIS (2159.22 μmol·g−1·h−1). This study explores the design and construction of efficient s-type heterojunctions by adjusting the energy band position of ZnIn2S4 as a new strategy in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Enhanced Fenton-like reactions via interface electron reconstruction in low-crystallinity Fe[sbnd]Co bimetallic metal–organic frameworks: Bidirectional control of Fe (III) and Co (II) sites

In this study, the activity and stability of Fenton-like reactions are enhanced by constructing a low-crystallinity FeCo bimetallic metal–organic framework (FeCox-BDC (BDC denotes as terephthalic acid)) through interface electron reconstruction. However, the specific origins and mechanisms of their enhanced activity, particularly in Fenton-like reactions, remains unclear. Systematic analysis revealed that the isomorphic substitution of Co (II) reduces the coordination number and d-electron count at local Fe (III) sites, shifting the d-band centers (−1.59 eV) closer to the Fermi level. Additionally, Co 3d-orbitals can accept electrons, improving the occupation of antibonding orbitals. Notably, Fe (III) and Co (II) sites exhibit a synergistic effect: Fe (III) sites strongly adsorbed the Oα point of the peroxy bond (lOαOβ), while Co (II) sites efficiently activated Oβ. Within 5 min, FeCo1/3-BDC achieved a 98 % reduction in Rhodamine-B (RhB), surpassing Fe-BDC by a factor of 76 and homogeneous Fenton catalytic systems (Co (II)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and Fe (III)/Co (II)/PMS). This work provides a profound understanding of interface electron reconstruction, offering valuable insights into guiding Fenton-like mechanisms.
