THE INFLUENCE OF SCHOOL LITERACY CULTURE THROUGH THE UTILIZATION OF READING CORNER ON STUDENTS' READING INTEREST

This research is motivated by the low interest in reading among students caused by the lack of student attention to reading books in the reading corner, so that the reading corner looks unused and untidy, the lack of interesting reading material for students, so that students are not interested in reading, like chatting with friends, not paying attention when learning is taking place. This study aims to determine the effect of school literacy culture through the utilization of reading corners on student interest in reading at SD Negeri 69 Palembang. This research is a type of experimental research, namely the type of Quasi Experimental Design. The population and samples in this study were fourth grade students of SD Negeri 30 Palembang, totaling 16 students in the control class and 20 students in the experimental class. Data collection techniques in this study were observation, questionnaire and documentation. Data analysis techniques in this study include Normality Test, Homogeneity Test, Hypothesis Test. The results of hypothesis testing research show t count ≥ t table or 12.465 ≥ 2.048, so it can be concluded that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. This means that there is an influence of school literacy culture through the utilization of reading corners on student interest in reading at SD Negeri 69 Palembang.

DEVELOPING READING MATERIAL IN THE FORM OF SHORT STORY BASED ON CENTRAL KALIMANTAN CULTURE

This research aims to develop reading materials in the form of short stories based on Central Kalimantan culture. Reading materials for university level in the form of local content are still limited. In fact, Dayak culture can be an interesting alternative reading material besides providing academic texts to students. Based on the needs analysis, it is known that at the English Education Study Program of Universitas Palangka Raya, there is a need for reading materials that are able to improve reading skills while containing relevant texts with text difficulty levels that are appropriate for student levels. Further, the reading materials should be in accordance with student interests and needs, contain effective learning strategies, and integrate culture or local content. This research applies Developmental Research in accordance with the ADDIE stages (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). Based on the Evaluation, the developed reading materials are in the form of short stories that contain Central Kalimantan cultural aspects embedded in activities, name of people, name of places, and name of food. The reading materials also contain exercises that demand students' skills in reading comprehension.

Application of Reading Materials in High School English Teaching

English reading ability is a very important skill for high school students, whether it is required for test-taking or learning the language itself. This study aims to analyze how teachers can better select reading materials for English learners at the high school level from two perspectives: the importance of reading in English learning and the current situation of English reading materials for high school students. Through the method of literature review, eleven authoritative texts were referenced, which included two experimental studies on the topic of the impact of reading materials on student learning outcomes. It was found that there are some problems with the current English reading materials in high schools, such as the limited number of reading materials in textbooks, the lack of interesting reading materials in the market, the lack of cultural information in the reading materials, and the topics that are not close enough to the students real life and interests. In order to solve these problems, teachers should choose reading materials that are suitable for students cognitive level and interests, reduce the reading difficulty, enrich cultural information, reflect the contemporary nature, and be close to students daily life and topics of interest, and ultimately promote the solution of the problems.

BARRIERS TO ADVANCED HERITAGE LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT

Speakers of heritage languages do not universally achieve advanced levels in the language. We present evidence that three barriers are responsible: (1) lack of access to comprehensible, interesting reading material in the heritage language. (2) The use of traditional language teaching methods in heritage language classes, and (3) the reactions of elders who scold young heritage language speakers for their “errors.”

Female Hero-Seekers in Folk Fairy Tales From XIX Century: Feminist Stories for Reading in Education

The aim of the paper is to present several fairy tales from Giuseppe Pitrè’s collection as a potentially interesting reading material for children. Since classical fairy tales in some cases depict traditional gender roles, they can present an obstacle to children’s gender construction. Therefore, it is also important to read those stories which do not have a stereotypical gender discourse. We found such stories in Pitrè’s collection of folk fairy tales from the 19th century. In the paper we present the analysis of the structure of several folk fairy tales from Pitrè’s collection. The analysis has been performed according to Propp’s structuralist method, while the task was to determine the morphology of those fairy tales dealing with female hero-seekers. Such heroines correspond to the feminist perspective and they are convenient for reading in education for the purpose of children’s constructions of gender not exclusively provided by normative canons. The model of critical reading, which we suggest for reading the analyzed fairy tales, has been founded on reader-response criticism.

Studies Literacy Reading Autistic Children

The literacy movement is not only the responsibility of the government, but the responsibility of all stakeholders such as the business world, universities, social organizations, literacy activists, parents, and the community. The spirit of literacy culture is very active in its implementation in schools from elementary to high school. Various school programs are implemented, starting from reading corners, various places, and media created by schools to support these programs. Likewise, for special schools, literacy for children with special needs is also carried out to support a literacy culture for children with disabilities. There is one special school in Indonesia with disabilities that are included in the autistic category. Several studies have shown that schools are very enthusiastic about implementing the Literacy Movement program. However, it focuses a lot on how to implement it with the right method and does not consider what materials are needed for autistic children. Meanwhile, autistic children need independent literacy in their lives, such as independence in bathing, dressing, using socks, toilet training, and so on. Interesting reading material about self-reliance is hardly available in shops, libraries, and schools. In this article, we convey that making interesting reading materials for autistic students related to independent living is a challenge to make teachers, literacy activists, and communities concerned with literacy. Autistic students need regularity, discipline, and interesting reading with basic material content such as the chaining method. The chaining method, for example, is used to train dental skills in children with intellectual disabilities. The chaining method used is the chaining method used in the next steps of chaining, namely the initial steps of the behavior are taught first, , the steps taught are related to the second steps, and so on until the stage is complete. The type of research used is a case study. Meanwhile, data collection was by observation and by looking at the literacy cases of children with special needs. Research analysis was done using qualitative description. The results showed that the significantly autistic used literacy materials by reading series books in the form of chains which were simpler to read and also useful for their independence in everyday life.

Analysis of clean water needs, quality and availability projections in 2032 (Case study: SMK Negeri 2 Manokwari)

<p>SMK Negeri 2 Manokwari West Papua Province is one of the vocational high schools that foster 12 competencies in the field of Technology and Engineering with 1,567 people active in 2022. To support daily activities at school, the availability of clean water in the school environment is necessary for washing hands, defecating, and urinating. The availability of clean water is at least balanced with the need for clean water, this is intended to ensure that school needs are fulfilled. This study aims to analyze the need for clean water and clean water quality by quality standards. Clean water needs are analyzed using a mathematical approach based on clean water planning criteria, while the clean water quality analysis is carried out by testing clean water samples through the Manokwari City BPOM laboratory. The results showed that the need for clean water in schools was 17,280 liters/day. Water distribution to bathrooms/toilets, sinks, and public face, uses a piping network sourced from 2 reservoirs with a capacity of 40,400 liters. The source of raw water used is groundwater and pumping systems. For the analysis of clean water quality, the data shows that the temperature parameter = 0.05 <sup>o</sup>C, pH = 7.88, TDS = 0.3060 mg/L, and coliform number = 27.09 x 10^1 CFU/100 mL, so that the water quality microbiologically does not meet the requirements for sanitary hygiene. While the results of the study showed that the need for clean water in SMK Negeri 2 Manokwari until 2032 reached 33,276 L/day (47.21%). The results of this study are expected to be useful for the development of science for academics in universities, government and society. E, especially for students at SMK Negeri 2 Manokwari, hopefully, it will be interesting reading material in the school library.</p>

Implementation of the School Literacy Movement in Fostering Reading Interest in Elementary School Students

The School Literacy Movement is an activity initiated by Directorate General of Education of Indonesia which aims to increase students' interest in reading at school. Application the school literacy movement continues to be carried out with the hope that students have the ability to access, understand, use writing information, and have the ability to speak. This study aims to describe implementation of the school literacy movement in increasing interest read students in elementary school. The method used is literature review with data collection techniques using the PRISMA principle data base Google Scholar 2017-2021 which was later in-depth analysis. The results of the study that in increasing interest in reading elementary school students can be marked by love, interest, and enthusiasm in reading books can be seen from the results of the forms of works made such as poetry, rhymes, stories short, competitive achievements and good literacy skills students have. Supporting factors in the implementation of the literacy movement schools include the existence of financial resources, reading parks, corners class reading, school library, interesting reading material, clean and comfortable environment. While the inhibiting factor the school literacy movement, namely the lack of teacher awareness and motivation from the teacher, reading materials used in activities literacy does not attract the attention of students and infrastructure in unsupportive schools.

The Portrayal of Discourse of Violence in Fantasy Fiction and Its Impact among Adolescents and Early Teenagers

Fantasy fiction is an extremely popular genre that acts as easy and interesting reading material, also mostly acquired by parents or peers as a gift. Its availability may also be promoted by local bookstores or the School library. It has been shown by multiple studies that media that display violence adversely affects the mental health of children. Unlike movies and films, there is no censorship associated with literature. This article is designed to elaborate upon these effects. The media referred to in this article is print media. A large amount of research is focused largely on visual media like television, digital games as well as films. However, the way by which violent acts are projected on the psychology of children through print media still remains to be comprehensively researched. The genre of print media referred to in this article is popular fantasy fiction. This particular genre of fiction is vastly popular and conveniently available to children. The study includes primarily adolescents and early teenagers in the age group 10 years to 16 years. The consumption of media violence through fantasy fiction during the early and impressionable years has been known to predict aggression, aggressive behaviour and stress among children, especially when the children under study are school-going. It also may most likely result in facing peer rejection and socially unwanted consequences. The context of the “General Aggression Model” or GAM is a complex and multifactorial concept that forms the basis of the findings. The purpose of the study is to validate and create a clear awareness about the effect of short-term as well as the long- term exposure of violence, on young children who are of an impressionable mindset. The study also aims to propose some measures of intervention that may be undertaken to reduce the effects of this exposure that lead to aggression and stress, which could be of a long lasting nature. The finding and outcomes of the study undertaken through the data analysis clearly supports its objectives.

Insights about Reading Competences of Students in Public Schools in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia

This article was aimed to investigate the insights about reading competences of students in public schools in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. In particular, it was aimed to explain what and how reading competences of students looked like especially when they were related to their learning achievements at school. The article employed a library-based research design as there was little chance to do a case study to gain in-depth analysis related to the issues being investigated due to time constraint. As this was a library- based research, the main data collection technique was based on evidences derived from extensive literatures related to reading competences of high school students in this province. The analysis was mainly based on the content analytical point of views. The findings suggest that a number of factors strongly affected high school students’ reading competences. Despite the case, it was identified that learning and reading cultures of Indonesian students predominantly influenced the ways they approached and made use of reading materials at their hands which eventually led to their reading achievements. The results of the research suggest that as students now live in the era of advanced communication and information technologies, provisions of these technological-based learning devices are inevitable in high schools. Moreover, the local education authorities urgently need to provide adequate reading text books and other interesting reading materials to students. In addition, it is to inform teachers and other educational stakeholders to create learning atmospheres in which students were interested in reading activities from which they could develop their reading cultures for the future

Graphic Novel Development as A Reading Media for Increasing Literacy Skill Of 8th Grade Junior High School Students

This research believes that junior high school students in eighth grade need suitable and interesting reading material to develop their literacy skills which one way to achieve it is to design graphic novels of learning material on it. This research was designed in the form of design and development (D&D) model proposed by Richey and Klein (2007). The development model used in this research was Richey and Klein's (2007) ADDE model. The result was a graphic novel as an attractive literacy media that was developed for assisting eighth grade junior high school students’ literacy skills. Based on the content validity judgment, the graphic novel was highly relevant to the twelve criteria of a good graphic novel with minor revision. The quality judgment was utilized to determine whether or not the graphic novel was already qualified to serve as a good literacy source by using expert judgment. There were two expert judges and twelve users who took role in judging the quality of the graphic novel. Based on the quality judgment, the graphic novel was categorized as excellent media. MODEL PEMBELAJARAN TASK BASED LEARNING DALAM MENINGKATKAN HASIL BELAJAR DAN KEMAMPUAN MEMBACA TEKS BERBAHASA INGGRIS SISWA

This Class Action research was conducted to look at students' improved reading skills through interesting and varied reading materials and the design of diverse reading tasks in English subjects and found the obstacles they faced in improving their reading skills. This research was conducted on students of class XII IPS1 SMA N I Kecamatan Kapur IX, Kabupaten Lima Puluh Kota. The research was conducted in two cycles. Data is obtained through pre-test results, observation sheets, field records, fill formats, and post-tests. The results of each cycle are analyzed both in terms of process and repeat/test results. In terms of the process can be observed from the enthusiasm of students in answering questions both oral and written accurately. In terms of results, judging from the results of the replay carried out at the end of each cycle. Furthermore, the results of each cycle analysis are used as a reference for the learning of the next cycle. Through observations, questionnaires, test results every cycle, and post-tests, the results of this study show students enjoy reading learning and there is an increase in their abilities. Learning to read in English will be more successful if the teacher uses interesting readings, tasks that vary in delivering the material. For that, the teacher must be more active in preparing manuscripts - varied English scripts and challenging tasks.

Online English Comics as Reading Materials for English Language Education Department Students

<p style="text-align:justify">Online English comic is one of reading material that can be used by students. Students should be triggered by interesting and understandable reading material to increase their reading motivation and English proficiency. The objective of this study is to discuss the benefits of online English comics as reading materials and to discover the applications and websites that are usually used by students to read online English comics. This study applied the descriptive qualitative study supported by interviews as a data-gathering technique. The results of this study showed the benefits of online English comics as reading materials. Those are adding language knowledge such as vocabulary and grammar, enhancing reading comprehension, building critical thinking, increasing creativity, and developing reading motivation. The second finding is about the applications and websites to read English comics that students prefer to read. There are some applications and websites that are usually used by students to read English comics. The applications are Webtoon and Ciayo Comic, and also the websites include Mangakakalot.com, Mangareaderapp.com, Mangazuki.info, and Mangapanda.com.</p>

The Bayesian Design of Adaptive Clinical Trials.

This paper presents a brief overview of the recent literature on adaptive design of clinical trials from a Bayesian perspective for statistically not so sophisticated readers. Adaptive designs are attracting a keen interest in several disciplines, from a theoretical viewpoint and also—potentially—from a practical one, and Bayesian adaptive designs, in particular, have raised high expectations in clinical trials. The main conceptual tools are highlighted here, with a mention of several trial designs proposed in the literature that use these methods, including some of the registered Bayesian adaptive trials to this date. This review aims at complementing the existing ones on this topic, pointing at further interesting reading material.

초등학교 1학년의 영어 이야기책과 정보책의 선호도 및 선호 요소

The purpose of this study is to identify first graders’ preferences for storybooks and informational books and to analyze the factors that determine their preferences. For this study, 25 students in Seoul G elementary school participated in the preference survey. The preference survey consisted of multiple choice and descriptive questions and was conducted before and after English book reading classes. According to the results, students preferred storybooks over informational books, and their preference for storybooks became stronger after the English book reading class. The analysis of factors that determine their preferences revealed that key determinants were related to content, aesthetic, form, and learning. When the determinants are carefully considered in book selection, both storybooks and information books can be an effective and interesting reading material for students to learn English. This study has significance in that it provides valuable insights into understanding book preference determinants when we need to consider the selection of storybooks and informational books.

AN ANALYSIS ON STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION IN ENGLISH READING

The purpose of this research was to know the students’ motivation in English reading. The reason why this research was conducted was to find what the aspect which influences students’ motivation in English reading and the reason behind it. The population of this research was 210 students. The researcher took 136 students as the sample of this research. The sampling technique that researcher used was simple random sampling. Then, 4 students purposively were interviewed by the researcher. The questionnaire result showed that, because of the high means score in reading curiosity (RC) was 3.30. Then, the mean score for reading involvement (RI) was 3.30. Also, the mean score for importance of reading (IRE) was 3.60, researcher concluded that the students were intrinsically motivated. The interviews result showed that, beside to add knowledge, or learn culture, most of them answered that their motivation was to add new vocabulary. Even though there was still negative attitude like feeling shy or afraid of making mistake, they thought that English reading was beneficial for them like to know other cultures. In order to promote learners’ intrinsic motivation, one of the best ways might be by providing them with interesting material. The lecturer should provide a wide selection of interesting reading materials and let the students choose and read the book in a comfortable situation.

White Print: The Dotted Word

This case describes the efforts put in and challenges faced by a young female social entrepreneur, Upasana Makati, in an attempt to make a difference in the lives of people who are visually impaired or with poor vision in India. The idea of White Print was to provide interesting reading material for the visually impaired population, including Braille Tactile alphabet books in English and Hindi. Upasana had been handling all the functions on her own with occasional help from interns which has been working out well so far. However, going ahead, the business is bound to face issues related to revenue generation, scaling up, and impact. This can be a good case to introduce the concept of Social Entrepreneurship, Dual Bottom-line, and Hybrid organizations to students.

THE SOCIALIZATION OF VISUAL MEDIA PROMOTION ON ANCOL YOUTH COMMUNITY IN SUNDA KELAPA

The results of a survey that has been released by UNESCO in 2017, Indonesia occupies the 60th position from 61 countries in terms of reading interest. These results are in line with the results of the preliminary survey that has been conducted by a community dedication team within the District of South Meruya. The results of the preliminary survey show that the reading interest in this area has been very low as having been indicated by the number of the books that the people in South Meruya have read. Such low reading interest might bring about negative impact whereas in the digital era information might be accessed easily from numerous media including the social one. As a result, information that have been retrieved might not be filtered and thus the information might be skewed; in turn, misreading on the information might lead to provocation and even chaos. Therefore, a community service in the domain of reading activities within the District of Meruya Selatan is held in order to forge the literacy within the area. With regards to the objective, through the study the researchers would like to design a reading corner with the objective of providing access to the interesting yet useful reading materials for the community. By doing so, it is expected the reading interest and the knowledge of the community in the District of South Meruya might be improved so that a community with high-quality life might be created.

Access to books and English reading: A virtuous circle

The hypothesis explored in this paper is whether a “virtuous circle” can be established to promote English language development: providing access to interesting and comprehensible reading material, which in turn will increase reading English books, which in turn will promote English competence and in turn more reading of English books. Specifically, we seek to determine if those with more access to English books at home and through visits to bookstores show more interest in reading, and in turn are more supportive of having an English library at their school. Analysis of responses of sixth graders at four schools in Korea revealed little access to English reading material, but supported the virtuous circle hypothesis, suggesting that the path to high English competence may be easier to establish than we have imagined.
