Photocontrolled Reversibly Chiral-Ordered Assembly Based on Cucurbituril.

Chirality transfer and regulation, accompanied by morphology transformation, arouse widespread interest for application in materials and biological science. Here, a photocontrolled supramolecular chiral switch is fabricated from chiral diphenylalanine (l-Phe-l-Phe, FF) modified with naphthalene (2), achiral dithienylethene (DTE) photoswitch (1), and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). Chirality transfer from the chiral FF moiety of 2 to a charge-transfer (CT) heterodimer consisting of achiral guest 1 and achiral naphthalene (NP) in 2 has been unprecedented achieved via the encapsulation of CB[8]. On the contrary, chirality transfer from chiral FF to NP cannot be conducted in only guest 2. Crucially, induced circular dichroism of the heterodimer can be further modulated by distinct light, attributing to reversible photoisomerization of the DTE. Meanwhile, topological nanostructures are changed from one-dimensional (1D) nanofibers to two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets in the orderly assembling process of the heterodimer, which further achieved reversible interconversion between 2D nanosheets and 1D nanorods with tunable-induced chirality stimulated by diverse light.

Characterization of SWCNT products manufactured in Russia and the prospects for their industrial application

Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are of the greatest interest for application in materials used for various purposes due to all of their unique properties. However, the practical use of SWCNTs has, until quite recently, been limited by the absence of a cheap industrial process for manufacturing them. Currently, a technology for the synthesis of SWCNTs from hydrocarbon raw materials providing the initial SWCNTs product of a sufficiently high quality has been developed in Russia for the first time in world history. In this work, the results of the characterization of the SWCNT products available in the Russian market are presented and the most promising directions among the technical applications of the materials and products on the basis of SWCNTs are highlighted.

Organoplatinum Chromophores for Application in High-Performance Nonlinear Absorption Materials

Chromophores and materials that exhibit nonlinear absorption over a broad spectrum and with high temporal dynamic range are of interest for application in materials engineering and biology. Recent work by a number of research groups has led to the development of a new family of organometallic chromophores and materials featuring interesting and useful nonlinear absorption properties. These systems contain the platinum acetylide moiety as a fundamental molecular unit, combined with delocalized, π-conjugated electron systems. These organometallic chromophores provide a unique combination of properties, such as negligible ground state absorption in the visible region, large spin-orbit coupling giving rise to high triplet excited state yield, triplet lifetime in the microsecond domain, high two-photon cross-section in the visible and near-infrared regions, and high triplet-triplet absorption cross-section in the visible and near-infrared region. This Spotlight on Application highlights recent developments in this area, combining background and review on nonlinear absorption in platinum acetylide chromophores and describing significant recent results from our own laboratory.
