Performance analysis of ICI self-cancellation schemes in OFDM systems

Abstract Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising technique in modern high data rate wireless communication system. However, the serious problem in OFDM system is the inter-carrier-interference (ICI) that is produced by the carrier frequency offset (CFO). CFO destroys the orthogonal properties among the sub-carriers and introduces ICI. ICI is a major impairment in OFDM system as it can degrade the bit error rate (BER) performance of the system. In this paper we have proposed an optimal ICI self-cancellation scheme that can maximize the carrier-to-interference-ratio (CIR) of the system. This scheme is based on optimizing the data allocation and combining parameters where, for estimated CFO, the optimized values of these parameters are calculated using Nelder Mead simplex algorithm. An approach to calculate the sub-optimized values of data allocation and combining parameters is also proposed, where the knowledge of CFO estimation can be avoided. In this paper, we have carried out the complete performance analysis of ICI self-cancellation schemes. We have also derived the mathematical expressions for ICI coefficients and presented a comparative analysis of standard OFDM system with different ICI cancellation schemes. The mathematical expressions for CIR and BER performance are further derived. To confirm the validity of the results Monte Carlo simulations using Matlab are also performed. We have also done the comparison of peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of conventional ICI self-cancellation scheme and proposed scheme.

Performance evaluation of ICI self-cancellation schemes in fractional wavelet-based OFDM system

The widely used multi carrier modulation technique in the current wireless scenario is orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). It is severely affected by frequency offsets and leads to inter carrier interference (ICI). Fractional wavelet transforms (FrWT)-based OFDM model is proposed to mitigate the effect of ICI by its orthogonal fractional wavelets. The performance of FrWT involved OFDM model is comparatively analysed through various mapping schemes of ICI self-cancellation in order to mitigate frequency offsets. This system overcomes the drawback of ICI self-cancellation and shows improved bandwidth efficiency without any cyclic prefix. Simulation results are carried out for the proposed model and compared with exiting Fourier transform and wavelet transform-based OFDM system. The analysis is performed for a range of normalised frequency offsets values. The proposed model performance is tested with various mapping schemes against a frequency offset of 0.05. It is proved that FrWT-based OFDM with ICI self-cancellation gives reduced bit error rate (BER) of 10–5 at 8 dB signal to noise ratio (SNR). From various graphs, it states that weighted conjugated transformation results in effective mitigation of ICI with BER achievement of 10-4.4 at frequency offset of 0.1.

A Novel ICI Triple Cancellation Scheme in Fast Time-varying Environment for OFDM Systems

In fast time-varying environment, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems lose the orthogonality between subcarriers due to the Doppler effect, resulting in inter-carrier interference (ICI), which greatly affects the performance of the communication system. Based on the analysis of the principle of ICI generation in time-varying environment, an ICI triple cancellation scheme is proposed to reduce the ICI of the OFDM systems in fast time-varying environment. In the scheme, the ICI self-cancellation modulation is performed at the transmitter of the OFDM system. Then, the time-varying channel is modeled as a linearly time-varying (LTV) model for ICI dual cancellation. Finally, the ICI self-cancellation demodulation is executed at the receiver of the system. Simulation experiment results show that the proposed ICI triple cancellation scheme can achieve a better effect of ICI cancellation than ICI self-cancellation scheme and ICI dual cancellation scheme, improving the performance of the communication system.

A new inter‐carrier interference self‐cancellation mapping scheme over fast time‐varying fading channels

A new inter-carrier interference self-cancellation method with the data symbol mapping scheme of differential grouping weighted symmetry data-conjugate is studied and proposed to raise the bandwidth efficiency and further improve the system performance over fast time-varying fading channels. Comparing with the other existing self-cancellation methods, the proposed scheme can not only maintain the same bandwidth efficiency as the original orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system, but also show a better performance on carrier-to-interference ratio and bit error rate according to the final simulation results and performance analysis.

Linear Processing for Intercarrier Interference in OFDM Index Modulation Based on Capacity Maximization

In this letter, we study the linear processing method to alleviate the intercarrier interference (ICI) for the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) index modulation (IM) in the rapidly time-varying (RTV) channel. Concretely, the proposed linear processing scheme is implemented by the joint design of the transmit precoding and receive postprocessing matrices. First, a lower bound of the capacity of OFDM-IM in the RTV channel is derived. Then, the precoding and postprocessing matrices are designed to maximize this capacity lower bound through utilizing the particle swarm optimization algorithm. Computer simulations show that the proposed scheme can alleviate the ICI effectively and has better performance than the conventional ICI self-cancellation scheme.

高速移动环境下，由于多普勒频移增大，信道的时变性破坏了正交频分复用(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, OFDM)系统子载波之间的正交性，从而产生子载波间干扰(Inter Carrier Interference, ICI)，导致系统性能严重下降。为了减少待估计量，通常采用基扩展模型(BEM)来近似模拟时变信道。为了提升性能，当信道的相干时间与发送码元的周期可相比拟的时候，本文采用多块(多个OFDM符号)。同时在使用导频符号对参数估计时，忽略了相邻非导频符号的ICI干扰，降低了整个时变信道下的估计准确性。因此我们通过分析子载波所产生的ICI系数变化特点，提出了一种带有ICI自消除的多OFDM符号时变信道估计方法，提高估计的准确性。但是由于基于多OFDM符号的信道估计性能在归一化多普勒频移较大时该方法成立条件不再满足，因此性能呈现明显的衰减，为了解决此问题，我们提出一种带有ICI自消除的自适应OFDM符号个数时变信道估计方法。仿真实验从误码率，归一化均方误差两方面分别验证了该方法的有效性。 In high-speed mobile environment, time-varying channel destroys the orthogonality between subcarriers of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, giving rise to in-ter-carrier interference (ICI), and degrading the performance of the systems. Basis expansion model (BEM) is usually used to approximate the time-varying channels to reduce the estimators. In order to improve performance, this paper adopts multi block (multiple OFDM symbols) when the coherent time of the channel variations and the symbols can be compared. However, when using pilot-symbol to parameter estimation, the ICI interference from near non-pilot-symbol is ignored, reducing its estimated accuracy of time-varying channel. And in this work the paper proposes a multiple OFDM symbols time-varying channel estimation method with ICI self-cancellation after analyzing the high correlation between subcarriers, improving the accuracy of estimation. But due to the condition of utilizing the multiple OFDM symbols channel estimation method is no longer met in large Doppler frequency shift, the performance of resulting channel estimation attenuates obviously. In order to solve this problem, we put forward a kind of adaptive OFDM symbol time-varying channel estimation method with the ICI self-cancellation. The simulation results show that the proposed method is effective from two aspects of error rate and normalized mean square error.

Index modulated OFDM for underwater acoustic communications

UWA channels exhibit time-varying multipath characteristics. To this end, OFDM is well known for its robustness against multipath channels but is prone to ICI induced by time variation. More recently, inspired by spatial modulation, the so-called IM-OFDM has also been proposed to provide higher system throughput than plain OFDM under certain conditions. A key feature of IM-OFDM is that partial subcarriers are kept inactive. This could potentially improve system performance in the presence of ICI. Leveraging on this, we are the first to propose IM-OFDM for UWA communications. On the other hand, however, we realize that ICI could potentially lead to energy leakage from active subcarriers to inactive ones, and impair the demodulation of IM-OFDM. In this article, we introduce IM-OFDM for UWA communications and propose a hybrid IM-OFDM scheme with improved spectral efficiency. We then review existing ICI self-cancellation techniques for generic OFDM, and propose a new ICI cancellation method for IM-OFDM.

ICI Self-Cancellation With Cosine Windowing in OFDM Transmitters Over Fast Time-Varying Channels

We propose the application of cosine windowing for the orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems to self-cancel intercarrier interference (ICI) in fast time-varying channels prior to receptions. With a time-domain cosine window immediately after the inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT) unit in OFDM transmitters, the ICI fractions from adjacent subcarriers significantly cancel one another at the expense of the orthogonality violation among subcarriers in the main lobe. As a result, the frequency-domain channel matrix reshaped by the cosine windowing can be closely approximated to a strictly banded matrix. In the complex exponential basis expansion model (CE-BEM), we present the estimation of the channel matrix with the assistance of the pilot clusters. Simulation results show that the receivers implementing the CE-BEM channel estimation and the low-complexity block turbo minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalization perform with considerably lower bit error rates (BER) even in very fast time-varying channels.

Improving Space-Time-Frequency MIMO-OFDM with ICI Self-Cancellation Scheme using Least Square Error Estimator

Channel estimation techniques for Multiple-input Multiple-output Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) based on comb type pilot arrangement with least-square error (LSE) estimator was investigated with space-time-frequency (STF) diversity implementation. The frequency offset in OFDM effected its performance. This was mitigated with the implementation of the presented inter-carrier interference self-cancellation (ICI-SC) techniques and different space-time subcarrier mapping. STF block coding in the system exploits the spatial, temporal and frequency diversity to improve performance. Estimated channel was fed into a decoder which combined the STF decoding together with the estimated channel coefficients using LSE estimator for equalization. The performance of the system was compared by measuring the symbol error rate with a PSK-16 and PSK-32. The results show that subcarrier mapping together with ICI-SC were able to increase the system performance. Introduction of channel estimation was also able to estimate the channel coefficient at only 5dB difference with a perfectly known channel.

Proposal of ICI cancellation using opposite weightings on symmetric subcarrier pairs in CO-OFDM systems

We propose a novel ICI cancellation using opposite weighting on symmetric subcarrier pairs to combat the linear phase noise of laser source and the nonlinear phase noise resulted from the fiber nonlinearity. We compare the proposed ICI cancellation scheme with conventional OFDM and the ICI self-cancellation at the same raw bit rate of 35.6Gb/s. In simulations, the proposed ICI cancellation scheme shows better phase noise tolerance compared with conventional OFDM and has similar phase noise tolerance with the ICI self-cancellation. The laser linewidth is about 13MHz at BER of 2×10−3 with ICI cancellation scheme while it is 5MHz in conventional OFDM. We also study the nonlinearity tolerance and find that the proposed ICI cancellation scheme is better compared with the other two schemes which due to the first order nonlinearity mitigation. The launch power is 7dBm for the proposed ICI cancellation scheme and its SNR improves by 4dB or 3dB compared with the ICI self-cancellation or conventional OFDM at BER of 1.1×10−3, respectively.

FADAC-OFDM: Frequency-Asynchronous Distributed Alamouti-Coded OFDM

We propose frequency-asynchronous distributed Alamouti-coded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (FADAC-OFDM). The proposed scheme effectively mitigates the intercarrier interference (ICI) due to frequency offset (FO) between two distributed antennas. The transmitter side of the proposed scheme transmits each of the two subslots in Alamouti code through two remote subcarriers symmetric to the center frequency and is referred to as space-frequency reversal schemes by Wang et al. or Choi. The receiver side of the proposed scheme is significantly different from the conventional scheme or the scheme proposed by Wang et al. in that it performs two discrete Fourier transform (DFT), each of which is synchronized to each transmit antenna's carrier frequency. The decision variables are generated by performing a simple linear combining with the same complexity as that of the conventional Alamouti code. The derivation shows that in flat-fading channels, the dominant ICI components due to FO cancel each other during the combining process. The proposed scheme achieves almost the same performance as the ideal Alamouti scheme, even with large FO. To use this ICI self-cancellation property for selective fading channels or in cases with timing offset (TO) between two transmit antennas, the total subcarriers are divided into several subblocks, and the proposed scheme is applied to each subblock. For mildly selective channels or cases with practically small TO, the proposed scheme achieves significantly improved performance compared with the conventional space-frequency Alamouti-coded OFDM.

Performance on ICI Self-Cancellation in FFT-OFDM and DCT-OFDM System

In orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, the existence of frequency offset in AWGN channel affects the orthogonality among the subcarriers and consequently introduces the intercarrier interference (ICI). The paper investigates new ICI self-cancellation technique to mitigate the effect of ICI in FFT-OFDM and compares it to DCT based OFDM system in terms of bit error rate (BER) and carrier to interference ratio (CIR). The proposed method for group size three results in a significant 20 dB improved CIR in FFT-OFDM. In terms of BER, proposed ICI self-cancellation technique outperforms the other self-cancellation techniques in FFT-OFDM. Also, this paper investigates outperforming BER and CIR improvement by using DCT-OFDM without applying self-cancellation techniques, due to its energy compaction property.

Inter-carrier Interference Reduction Scheme for SFBC-OFDM Systems

In this paper, we first analyze carrier-to-interference ratio performance of the space-frequency block coded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (SFBC-OFDM) system in the presence of phase noise (PHN) and residual carrier frequency offset (RCFO). From the analysis, we observe that conventional SFBC-OFDM systems suffer severely in the presence of PHN and RCFO. Therefore, we propose a new inter-carrier interference (ICI) self-cancellation method - namely, ISC - for SFBC-OFDM systems to reduce the ICI caused by PHN and RCFO. Through the simulation results, we show that the proposed scheme compensates the ICI caused by PHN and RCFO in Alamouti SFBC-OFDM systems and has a better performance than conventional schemes.

Efficient ICI Self-Cancellation Scheme for OFDM Systems

In this paper, we present a new inter-carrier interference (ICI) self-cancellation scheme - namely, ISC scheme - for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing systems to reduce the ICI generated from phase noise (PHN) and residual frequency offset (RFO). The proposed scheme comprises a new ICI cancellation mapping (ICM) scheme at the transmitter and an appropriate method of combining the received signals at the receiver. In the proposed scheme, the transmitted signal is transformed into a real signal through the new ICM using the real property of the transmitted signal; the fast-varying PHN and RFO are estimated and compensated. Therefore, the ICI caused by fast-varying PHN and RFO is significantly suppressed. We also derive the carrier-to-interference power ratio (CIR) of the proposed scheme by using the symmetric conjugate property of the ICI weighting function and then compare it with those of conventional schemes. Through simulation results, we show that the proposed ISC scheme has a higher CIR and better bit error rate performance than the conventional schemes.

Estimation of CFO and STO for an OFDM using general ICI self-cancellation precoding

This study presents an efficient carrier-frequency-offset (CFO) and symbol-timing-offset (STO) estimation algorithm for time-dispersive orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system using a general inter-carrier interference (ICI) self-cancellation scheme. This study takes advantage of the time shift invariant property in the precoded signal to estimate the CFO. The proposed algorithm first stacks the receive time samples spaced by a pre-determined time interval into sample vectors, which can be expressed in a form having a CFO-directed response vector. This CFO-directed structure enables the proposed approach to estimate the CFO by using the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm in the time domain. Equalization is required before the MUSIC algorithm to remove the scaling factor generated in the signal stacking. Using the CFO estimate, the proposed approach compensates for the frequency error in the receive signal and then estimates the STO by invoking the MUSIC algorithm in the frequency domain. Unlike conventional algorithms, in addition to having a larger CFO estimation range linearly proportional to the precoding order, the proposed approach can easily handle the case of fractional STO. This study presents some statistical analysis of the undesired equalization residues and the mean square error of the perturbed MUSIC algorithm to provide further insights into the proposed approach.

A polynomial-rooting algorithm for CFO estimation in slow fading OFDM

This study proposes a polynomial-rooting algorithm to estimate the carrier-frequency-offset (CFO) of a slow fading orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. The proposed algorithm uses an inter-carrier-interference self-cancellation (ICI-SC) scheme to precode data symbols at the transmitter. This study derives the time coherency of the precoded OFDM signal, which enables the proposed algorithm to estimate the CFO through array signal processing techniques. The proposed algorithm first constructs snapshot vectors using the receive time samples at specific positions. This snapshot vector is CFO-directed because of the coherent property of the precoded signal. Using the second order statistics of the snapshot vector, the proposed approach estimates the CFO through a polynomial-rooting algorithm.

A kernel-based ICI self-cancellation scheme using constrained subcarrier combiners

Conventional ICI self-cancellation methods are spectral consuming because they modulate a single data on a group of subcarriers. To improve the spectral efficiency, the proposed approach uses a kernel-based precoder that maps at most L−1 data symbols to a group of L consecutive subcarriers. On the receive side, the carrier-frequency-offset-directed (CFO-directed) structure of the precoded signal enables the proposed approach to estimate the CFO in the frequency domain. Then, based on this CFO estimate, the proposed approach develops a set of constrained-subcarrier-combiners (CSC) to eliminate intra-group interference. Computer simulations show that in addition to achieving a high spectral efficiency proportional to the precoder order, the proposed approach can effectively eliminate the ICI caused by a large-frequency-error because of the CSC.

ICI Cancellation in OFDM Systems by Frequency Offset Reduction

The rapid growth within the field of digital communication during the recent years expanded the need for high-speed data transmission to support a wide range of services such as: video, data and voice in wireless communication systems, etc. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and a multicarrier modulation scheme are employed to achieve the high data rates. Since OFDM is very much sensitive to carrier frequency offsets, which cause the Inter-carrier Interference (ICI) leads to mitigation of this ICI is necessary. The objectives of this paper are to, proposed an efficient ICI self-cancellation scheme to mitigate the effect of ICI on OFDM systems. For this purpose, a redundant data is transmitted onto adjacent sub-carriers such that the ICI between adjacent sub-carriers cancels out at the receiver side. One data symbol is modulated into a group of adjacent sub carriers with a group of weighting coefficients. At the receiver side, the received signals are linearly combined on these sub carriers with proposed coefficients. The residual ICI contained in the received signals can then be further reduced. This study provides significant carrier-to-interference power ratio (CIR) improvement, which has been studied theoretically and supported by simulations. Since no channel equalization is required to reduce ICI, so the proposed scheme doesnt increase the system complexity.
