The contrasting interannual variation and mechanism of the first rainy season precipitation before and after the South China Sea summer monsoon onset

The first rainy season (FRS) is usually considered as a whole when its precipitation variability and the underlying mechanism are discussed. This strategy does not consider the South China Sea summer monsoon (SCSSM) onset occurring within the FRS, which implies an abrupt change in nature and, thereby, the possible characteristics and mechanism of precipitation. To overcome this deficiency, this study divides the FRS into two stages before and after the SCSSM onset, revisits their interannual precipitation variability, and finds remarkable differences in the two FRS stages. During the FRS stage before the SCSSM onset, enhanced precipitation is accompanied by an anticyclone centered on the Indian Peninsula and extending further eastward to the Philippines, active synoptic-scale disturbances in the upstream regions of South China and an anomalous anticyclone in the mid-latitudes of East Asia. This configuration reinforces the warm-moisture air transportation from the Bay of Bengal and the South China Sea and cold air invasion from the mid-latitude regions to South China. It shapes the pattern of initial ascending motions over South China by both dynamical and thermal forcing. During the FRS stage after the SCSSM onset, in contrast, enhanced precipitation is accompanied by an anomalous anticyclone in the western North Pacific and the mid-latitude Silk Road pattern. This configuration reinforces warm-moisture air transportation from the tropical Western Pacific and cold air from the northwest direction to South China and shapes the initial ascending motion mainly by thermal forcing. The interannual precipitation variability is tied to a tropical Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) dipole for the FRS period before the SCSSM onset but not after. Such a difference is possibly due to the changes in the basic thermal-dynamical state of the atmosphere near the Maritime Continent and the tropical Northwestern Pacific and their different responses to the SST forcing before and after the SCSSM onset.

Bison and cattle grazing increase soil nitrogen cycling in a tallgrass prairie ecosystem

AbstractNitrogen (N) is a necessary element of soil fertility and a limiting nutrient in tallgrass prairie but grazers like bison and cattle can also recycle N. Bison and cattle impact the nitrogen (N) cycle by digesting forage that is consumed, and recycled back to the soil in a more available forms stimulating soil microbial N cycling activities. Yet we do not know how both grazers comparatively affect N cycling in tallgrass prairie. Thus, we investigated if bison and cattle had similar impacts on N cycling in annually burned tallgrass prairie relative to ungrazed conditions over a 3-year period (2020–2022) at the Konza Prairie Biological Station. We examined: soil pH, soil water content, mineralized N, nitrification potential, denitrification potential and extracellular enzyme assays. Interannual variability in precipitation controlled soil water and N cycling microbial activities but grazing effects had a stronger influence on N cycling. We found significant differences and increased soil pH, nitrification and denitrification potential and less N limitation in bison vs cattle grazed soils where bison grazed soils exhibited faster N cycling. Differences between the grazers may be attributed to the different management of bison and cattle as both can impact N cycling. Overall, these data provide some evidence that bison and cattle affect N cycling differently at this study site, and improve the ecological understanding of grazer impacts on N cycling dynamics within the tallgrass prairie ecosystem.

Climate change impacts on precipitation and water resources in Northwestern China

A statistical analysis is conducted on the hourly precipitation at 105 national meteorological stations in the Xinjiang region of China from 2011 to 2020. The purpose of this analysis is to determine the total quantity of precipitation during the warm and cold seasons, as well as the precipitation frequency at each station. The results of the analysis indicate that there is a more pronounced inter-annual variation in precipitation during the warm and cold seasons in Xinjiang, where the total amount of precipitation during the warm season is significantly higher than that during the cold season, with the warm season experiencing at least twice as much precipitation. In terms of the inter-annual incremental amount of precipitation, both the warm and cold seasons exhibit a trend of increasing and then decreasing over the years. However, the curvature change is more prominent in the cold season compared to the warm season, suggesting that the inter-annual variation in precipitation during the warm season remains relatively stable. The spatial distribution characteristics of the total precipitation in Xinjiang indicate that warm-season precipitation is more scattered, while cold-season precipitation is mainly concentrated in the northern region of the territory. This pattern holds true at low, medium, medium–high, and high altitudes. The cumulative precipitation during the warm season is always higher than that in the cold season, and this difference becomes more prominent with increasing altitude. This indicates that warm-season precipitation in Xinjiang is closely related to its complex topographic structure, particularly the convective weather generated by topographic clouds. On the other hand, precipitation in the cold season is mainly concentrated in the low- and medium-altitude stations, and there is not much correlation between precipitation and altitude. Precipitation is mainly affected by the mesoscale and the direct influence of large-scale weather systems. Analysis of precipitation in extreme moments reveals that during the warm season, extreme precipitation events occur mainly from the evening to early morning (19:00–03:00 the next day), accounting for 75.24% of the 105 stations. In contrast, during the cold season, extreme precipitation events occur between 03:00 and 18:00, corresponding to 74.29% of the stations. The relationship between precipitation and altitude differs in the warm and cold seasons. In the warm season, there is a linear relationship between precipitation and altitude, with a slope of 0.72 and a correlation coefficient of 0.52, indicating that precipitation increases with increasing altitude. However, in the cold season, the linear relationship between precipitation and altitude is very inconspicuous, with a slope of −0.05 and a correlation coefficient of −0.05, suggesting that there is no significant relationship between precipitation and altitude during this season. These findings provide valuable insights into the changing patterns of precipitation gradients at different altitudes and seasons in Xinjiang. This information can be used for the site selection of smokestack operations in high-altitude areas and for ground and air weather modification operations in low-altitude areas. Additionally, these data contribute to the understanding of precipitation patterns in Xinjiang, further improving the effectiveness of weather modification efforts and increasing the utilization of airborne water resources.

Interannual precipitation variability dominates the growth of alpine grassland above-ground biomass at high elevations on the Tibetan Plateau

The impact of global climate change on mountainous regions with significant elevational gaps is complex and often unpredictable. In particular, alpine grassland ecosystems, are experiencing changes in their spatial patterns along elevational gradients, which increases their vulnerability to degradation. Therefore, a more detailed understanding of spatiotemporal changes in alpine grassland productivity along elevational gradients and an elevation-dependent characterization of the effects of climatic variables on grassland productivity dynamics are essential. Thus, we conducted a study in the Tibetan Plateau, where we collected 2251 above-ground biomass (AGB) observations collected from 1986 to 2020. Mean annual temperature (TMP), annual precipitation (PRE), interannual precipitation variability (CVP), and snowmelt (SNMM) were chosen as influential variables. Using the Random Forest algorithm, we generated an AGB raster dataset covering the period 1989–2020 based on earth observation data at 30 m resolution to examine the dynamics of alpine grasslands and their response to climate change with respect to elevation. The results showed that the AGB of alpine grassland on the Tibetan Plateau was 49.17 g/m2. We observed an increasing trend in grassland AGB at high elevations, with a growth rate of about 0.28 g/m2 per year within the interval of 3100–4800 m. However, above the elevation of approximately 4400–4600 m, we observed a decoupling trend between grassland AGB and TMP. Moreover, at most elevations, the proportion of maximum partial correlation coefficients for CVP, PRE, and SNMM surpassed that of TMP. We found the dominant role of precipitation variability on grassland AGB dynamics, with 22.80 % and 18.86 % for CVP+ and CVP-, respectively. The proportion of CVP+ did not vary much at different elevations, whereas the proportion of CVP- increased with elevation, varying between 12.85 and 30.25 %. In the future, precipitation on the Tibetan plateau is expected to increase, potentially reversing its original positive impact.

Combined effects of precipitation anomalies and dams on streamwater-groundwater interaction in the Fen River basin, China

Both water management measures like damming and changes in precipitation as a result of anthropogenic induced climate change have exerted profound effects on the dynamics of streamwater-groundwater interaction (SGI). However, their compound effects on SGI have not been investigated so far. Taking the Fen River of China as an example, this study aims to examine the synergistic impacts of damming and precipitation anomalies on SGI dynamics. The sampling considered the seasonal and interannual variability of precipitation (May and September in 2019 representing a dry year; May and August in 2021 representing a wet year), and long-term daily observational data, including water levels and water discharge, were combined to elucidate the compound effects. Precipitation anomalies and damming exert significant individual and combined influences on SGI. Separately, dams and reservoirs reversed the SGI dynamics, significantly increasing the contributions of streamwater to groundwater from 0 to 29 % to 78 % in the dam-affected areas. Further, the groundwater discharge ratios behind the dam (about 60 %) were three times higher than those in front of the dam. Precipitation anomalies significantly amplified interannual variability in SGI patterns, and groundwater discharge ratios increased by 47 % during the dry period (2019) compared to flood period (2021). The combined influence of precipitation anomalies and dam regulation remarkably changed the lateral, vertical, and longitudinal water exchange dynamics. Precipitation anomalies affected the SGI dynamics at the whole watershed scale, whereas dam regulation regimes exhibited a stronger control at the local scale. The compound effects of dam regulation and precipitation anomalies can result in different SGI patterns under various climate scenarios. More attention should be paid to the interrelated feedback mechanisms between damming, extreme precipitation events, and their impact on the watershed-scale hydrological cycle.

Anthropogenic changes of interannual-to-decadal climate variability in CMIP6 multi-ensemble simulations

Abstract As well as having an impact on the background state of the climate, global warming due to human activities could affect its natural oscillations and internal variability. In this study, we use four initial-condition ensembles from the CMIP6 framework to investigate the potential evolution of internal climate variability under different warming pathways for the 21st century. Our results suggest significant changes in natural climate variability, and point to two distinct regimes driving these changes. First, a decrease of internal variability of surface air temperature at high latitudes and all frequencies, associated with a poleward shift and the gradual disappearance of sea-ice edges, which we show to be an important component of internal variability. Second, an intensification of the interannual variability of surface air temperature and precipitation at low latitudes, which appears to be associated with the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This second regime is particularly alarming because it may contribute to making the climate more unstable and less predictable, with a significant impact on human societies and ecosystems.

Idiosyncrasy and predictability in intraspecific trait–climate relationships of grasses

AbstractMany plant species can exhibit remarkable variation in leaf characteristics, depending on their abiotic and biotic environment. Environmental changes therefore have the potential to alter leaf traits, which in turn scale up to influence ecosystem processes including net primary productivity, susceptibility to fire, and palatability to herbivores. It is not well understood how consistent trait–environment relationships are among species, across sites and over time. This presents a fundamental challenge for functional ecology, because no study can measure all relevant species in all places at all times. Thus, understanding the limits of transferability is critical. We collected leaf trait measurements on 13 species of grass (family: Poaceae) across 11 sites and five years (n = 3091 individuals). Sites were arrayed along a spatial precipitation gradient in coastal northern California (annual precipitation of 590–1350 mm) with substantial interannual precipitation variability (from 60% below the 30‐year average to 100% above average). Temporal and spatial linear relationships between precipitation and specific leaf area (SLA) appear at first idiosyncratic, with each species sometimes displaying positive and sometimes negative responses. However, this variation arises from sampling different portions of an underlying hump‐shaped relationship, which was shared across most species. This hump‐shaped relationship was driven primarily by changes in leaf tissue density. These results suggest the potential for transferability among species, as well as between space and time, as long as the gradients are sufficiently long to capture the nonlinear response. Future work could explore the physiological basis of the nonlinear SLA response, including the possibility that distinct physiological mechanisms are operating at the two extremes of the gradient.

The contrast responses of August precipitation over Northeast China to strong and moderate developing El Niño

Northeast China (NEC), which is identified as China's largest granary, has the biggest interannual variability in precipitation in August, which is low on predictive skill. El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the prime source of climate predictability and its temporal evolution is critical to improving the forecasting of summer NEC precipitation. At present, the impacts of a developing-ENSO on August NEC precipitation are unclear. Hence, this study investigates the complex relationship between a developing-ENSO and NEC precipitation in August. The results show that a strong (moderate) developing-El Niño can lead to positive (negative) August precipitation anomalies over NEC, while a neutral ENSO or La Niña have a weak influence on NEC August precipitation. Specifically, a strong developing-El Niño can cause cyclonic/southerly anomalies over NEC by stimulating northwestward wave propagation in the lower troposphere and Circumglobal Teleconnection (CGT) in the upper troposphere. While in a moderate developing-El Niño, the opposite CGT results in anticyclonic/northerly anomalies over NEC; and the warming Indian Ocean associated with the moderate developing-El Niño could excite Pacific-Japan patten. Consequently, southerly (northerly) anomalies can generate positive (negative) anomalous advection of climatological moist enthalpy in a strong (moderate) developing-El Niño, which then contributes to ascending (descending) motion and positive (negative) precipitation anomalies. However, in the neutral ENSO and La Niña phases, the zonal or weak meridional wind anomalies cannot exert a great influence on NEC precipitation in August. The complex relationship between August precipitation over NEC and developing ENSO can be well reproduced by numerical simulations, which demonstrate the robustness of the proposed physical mechanism.

Precursory signals of summer precipitation over southern Central Asia: Combined effect of April soil moisture and sea surface temperature

AbstractThis study investigates the interannual variability of summer precipitation over Central Asia and explores its precursory signals through soil moisture (SM) and sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies. The results reveal that southern Central Asia (SCA) is a crucial SM‐precipitation coupling region where summer precipitation is significantly linked to the preceding April SM in the Turan Plain, between the Caspian Sea and the Tibetan Plateau. The preceding Turan Plain SM (TPSM) anomaly can reflect the ensuing summer SM anomalies in the SCA region due to the persistence of SM. The higher TPSM can stimulate anomalous convective ascent and associated negative geopotential height anomalies over the SCA region, which is favourable for more SCA precipitation (SCAP) during summer. Additionally, Indian and Pacific Ocean SST (IPOS) anomalies can regulate the summer SCAP through ocean and land relay effects. The preceding April can reflect the subsequent summer SST anomalies across the northern Indian Ocean and South China Sea, which trigger a Matsuno‐Gill response and induce anomalous water vapour transport into the SCA region, providing favourable moisture conditions for more SCAP during summer. Apart from such an ocean relay effect, the preceding IPOS can modulate the April TPSM first and then affect the summer SCAP through the land relay effect caused by persistent SM anomalies from April to summer. The combined effect of the preceding TPSM and IPOS on the summer SCAP is more pronounced than the respective effect of either TPSM or IPOS. Incorporating the TPSM signal as a supplementary precursor can enhance the predictive skill of summer SCAP. These findings may provide valuable insights into the reasons and prediction of the variability of summer SCAP.

Landscape position mediates drought vulnerability in California valley oak (Quercus lobata)

Future climate change will exacerbate drought stress in water-limited ecosystems. However, topography can alter the fine-scale climatic and hydrologic conditions that mediate plant response to meteorological drought. Here, with six new valley oak (Quercus lobata) tree-ring width chronologies, we assess how topography acts as a mediating factor on tree growth and drought sensitivity. Because valley oaks are known to be highly dependent on subsurface water, we predicted that trees growing in riparian sites would be less sensitive to precipitation variability due to greater access to groundwater. Trees were sampled in the Tehachapi Mountains of California across a landscape gradient of sites ranging from 375–1650 m elevation and across upland (55–69 m mean height above nearest drainage) and riparian (2–6 m mean height above the nearest drainage) hillslope positions. Interannual tree growth patterns and drought sensitivity varied substantially in association with hillslope position and elevation. Valley oak radial growth showed a consistently weaker response to precipitation at riparian sites. The influence of hillslope position on drought sensitivity varied with elevation, such that the riparian buffering effect was weakest at sites higher in the watershed and strengthened, progressively, toward the lower elevation sites with greater climatic water deficit. Upland tree growth exhibited a strong response to high-frequency interannual precipitation variability at the high elevation site, whereas trees at lower elevation upland sites responded more to low-frequency decadal trends in precipitation, possibly reflecting hydrogeological processes by which precipitation feeds groundwater lower in the watershed. Our results are consistent with groundwater-dependence of valley oak and indicate that riparian habitats are the most likely refugia for the species during prolonged drought.

Fire–precipitation interactions amplify the quasi-biennial variability in fires over southern Mexico and Central America

Abstract. Fires have great ecological, social, and economic impact. However, fire prediction and management remain challenges due to a limited understanding of their roles in the Earth system. Fires over southern Mexico and Central America (SMCA) are a good example of this, greatly impacting local air quality and regional climate. Here we report that the spring peak (April–May) of fire activities in this region has a distinct quasi-biennial signal based on multiple satellite datasets measuring different fire characteristics. The variability is initially driven by quasi-biennial variations in precipitation. Composite analysis indicates that strong fire years correspond to suppressed ascending motion and weakened precipitation over the SMCA. The anomalous precipitation over the SMCA is further found to be mostly related to the East Pacific–North Pacific (EP-NP) pattern 2 months prior to the fire season. The positive phase of the EP-NP leads to enhanced precipitation over the eastern US but suppressed precipitation over the SMCA, similar to the spatial pattern of precipitation differences between strong and weak fire years. Meanwhile, the quasi-biennial signals in precipitation and fires appear to be amplified by their interactions through a positive feedback loop at short timescales. Model simulations show that in strong fire years, more aerosol particles are released and transported downstream over the Gulf of Mexico and the eastern US, where suspended light-absorbing aerosols warm the atmosphere and cause the ascending motion of the air aloft. Subsequently, a compensating downward motion is formed over the region of the fire source and ultimately suppresses precipitation and intensifies fires. Statistical analysis shows the different durations of the two-way interaction, where the fire suppression effect of precipitation lasts for more than 20 d, while fire leads to a decrease in precipitation at shorter timescales (3–5 d). This study demonstrates the importance of fire–climate interactions in shaping the fire activities on an interannual scale and highlights how precipitation–fire interactions at short timescales contribute to the interannual variability in both fire and precipitation.

Interannual Variation of Half-Hourly Extreme Precipitation in Africa: The Assessment of the Warmest Decade (2011–2020) Since the Beginning of Observations

AbstractAfrica is experiencing widespread extreme precipitation. However, the continent remains understudied regarding extreme precipitation variation, particularly at high temporal resolution. This study assessed the changes in spatial distribution, frequency, and intensity of half-hourly violent precipitation (≥ 50 mm/h) in Africa during 2011–2020. The data were sourced from the Integrated MultisatellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG) program. The results reflect that the 50–60 mm/h precipitation category was the most densely spatially distributed with less-discernable interannual changes. There was a strong interannual variation in the spatial distribution of the 60–70 mm/h and ≥ 70 mm/h precipitation categories. There was a general decrease in the frequency of occurrence of violent precipitation in all regions, except in North Africa (NA). Among the study regions, NA had the broadest precipitation intensity distribution extended to high values and consequently, on average, the most intense violent precipitation, followed by Southern Africa (SA) and Southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO). The regions in the tropics, i.e., West Africa (WA), Central Africa (CA), and East Africa (EA), had a relatively narrow intense violent precipitation distribution. The results further illustrate that the strength of climate variability modes has a strong influence in the distribution, frequency, and intensity of violent precipitation over the continent particularly the ≥ 70 mm/h precipitation category. This study underscores a need for a strengthened capacity in forecasting climate variability modes impacting on Africa, augmentation of continental precipitation observation network, and improved extreme precipitation adaptation infrastructure.

A Mechanism for the Summer Monsoon Precipitation Variability Over Northwest India Driven by Moisture Deficit Transport

AbstractA large reservoir of saturation deficit air is known to exist over the northern Arabian Sea and the adjoining land regions during the peak of Indian summer monsoon (ISM). The strengthening of monsoon low‐level jet (LLJ) in the northern parts of the Arabian Sea during the break phase of ISM helps in transporting this dry air toward northwestern India. Here, we show that, a weakening (strengthening) of the zonal flow over the northern Arabian Sea can reduce (enhance) the influx of the unsaturated air to the Northwest India and thereby enhance (reduce) precipitation there. The variability in the zonal flow over the northern Arabian Sea is a direct geostrophic response to the variability in the meridional pressure gradient over the Northwest India. The interannual variability in the mean sea level pressure over the region explains the inter‐annual variability of ISM precipitation during July–August over northwestern India. The contribution of El Niño Southern Oscillation in the interannual variability of precipitation over this region is not significant.

Simulating the Role of Biogeochemical Hotspots in Driving Nitrogen Export From Dryland Watersheds

AbstractClimate change and nitrogen (N) pollution are altering biogeochemical and ecohydrological processes in dryland watersheds, increasing N export, and threatening water quality. While simulation models are useful for projecting how N export will change in the future, most models ignore biogeochemical “hotspots” that develop in drylands as moist microsites in the soil become hydrologically disconnected from plant roots when soils dry out. These hotspots enable N to accumulate over dry periods and rapidly flush to streams when soils wet up. To better project future N export, we developed a framework for representing hotspots using the ecohydrological model RHESSys. We then conducted a series of virtual experiments to understand how uncertainties in model structure and parameters influence N export to streams. Modeled N export was sensitive to three major factors (a) the abundance of hotspots in a watershed: N export increased linearly and then reached an asymptote with increasing hotspot abundance; this occurred because carbon and N inputs eventually became limiting as hotspots displaced vegetation cover, (b) the soil moisture threshold required for subsurface flow from hotspots to reestablish: peak streamflow N export increased and then decreased with an increasing threshold due to tradeoffs between N accumulation and export that occur with increasingly disconnected hotspots, and (c) the rate at which water diffused out of hotspots as soils dried down: N export was generally higher when the rate was slow because more N could accumulate in hotspots over dry periods, and then be flushed more rapidly to streams at the onset of rain. In a case study, we found that when hotspots were modeled explicitly, peak streamflow nitrate export increased by 29%, enabling us to better capture the timing and magnitude of N losses observed in the field. N export further increased in response to interannual precipitation variability, particularly when multiple dry years were followed by a wet year. This modeling framework can improve projections of N export in watersheds where hotspots play an increasingly important role in water quality.

Weather regimes associated with summer precipitation over the southeast Tibetan Plateau and the relationship with ENSO

AbstractThe Tibetan Plateau (TP), known as the “Asian water tower,” provides freshwater resources for hundreds of millions of people in Asia. Most of the Asian rivers, such as the Yangtze, the Jinsha, the Salween and the Brahmaputra, are generated from southeastern part of the TP (SETP). In order to explore the influences of atmospheric circulation on the precipitation over the SETP, self‐organizing mapping (SOM) was utilized to identify the weather regimes (WRs) and related precipitation over the SETP and its surrounding areas. The daily scale of large‐scale circulation via ERA5 were classified into nine WRs by the SOM. There are two favourable regimes (rainy WRs) and three adverse ones (rainless WRs) for the SETP precipitation among these WRs, respectively. Furthermore, water vapour transport of the WRs and the relevant effects of ENSO are investigated. The droughts and floods of SETP are determined by the interannual variations of occurred frequency of the WRs. In particular, the SETP is flooded in the years with frequent occurrence of the rainy WRs and vice versa. The occurrence of WRs is closely related to the phase state of ENSO. The 9th WR (SOM9) and the 4th WR (SOM4) are separately occurred more frequently in the El Niño and the La Niña years. Regulation of ENSO on the SETP precipitation are effective through its influences on the state of atmospheric circulation, that is, frequency of various WRs. It implies that the occurred frequency of WRs is modulated by the climate systems and results in the interannual variations of precipitation over the SETP.

Quantifying Changes in the Florida Synoptic-Scale Sea-Breeze Regime Climatology

Abstract Florida’s summertime precipitation patterns are in part influenced by convergence between the synoptic-scale wind and local sea-breeze fronts that form along the east and west coasts of the peninsula. While the National Weather Service previously defined nine sea-breeze regimes resulting from variations in the synoptic-scale vector wind field near Tampa, Florida, these regimes were developed using a shorter 18-yr period and examined primarily for the purposes of short-term weather prediction. This study employs reanalysis data to develop a full 30-yr climatology of the Florida sea-breeze regime distribution and analyze the composite mean atmospheric conditions associated with each regime. Further, given that 1) the synoptic-scale wind primarily varies as a result of movement in the western ridge of the North Atlantic subtropical high (NASH), and 2) previous studies suggest long-term shifts in the mean position of the NASH western ridge, this study also examines variability and trends in the sea-breeze regime distribution and its relationship to rainy-day frequency over a longer 60-yr period. Results indicate that synoptic-scale flow from the west through southwest, which enhances precipitation probabilities along the eastern half of the peninsula, has increased in frequency, while flow from the east through northeast has decreased in frequency. These changes in the sea-breeze regime distribution may be partially responsible for increases in rainy-day frequency during June–August over northeastern Florida, though results suggest that other factors likely contribute to interannual variability in precipitation across the southern peninsula.

Spatial and temporal patterns of forest fires in the Central Monte: relationships with regional climate

BackgroundNatural and anthropogenic wildfires burn large areas of arid and semi-arid forests with significant socio-economic and environmental impacts. Fire regimes are controlled by climate, vegetation type, and anthropogenic factors such as ignition sources and human-induced disturbances. Projections of climate and land-use change suggest that these controlling factors will change, altering fire regimes in the near future. In the southern Central Monte, Mendoza, Argentina, the factors that modulate the fire temporal and spatial variability are poorly understood. We reconstructed the fire history of southeast of Mendoza from 1984 to 2023 and investigated the relationships between fire extent and climate variability at seasonal and interannual scales. Burned areas were determined using Google Earth Engine by processing Landsat 5-TM, Landsat 7-ETM+ , and Landsat 8-OLI-TIRS sensor imagery.ResultsThe region exhibited high spatial and temporal variability in fire occurrence, being a mosaic of areas with different fire histories and recovery times. Between 1985 and 2023, fire recurrence ranged from sites unburned to sites with up to 14 fires. The occurrence of large fires was strongly favored by a combination of a year with abundant spring–early summer precipitation, which favors fuel accumulation, followed by a year of low spring–early summer precipitation. Precipitation and burnt area showed a very pronounced 6–7 year cycle, suggesting a dominant climatic control on fire occurrence.ConclusionsFire distribution in southeastern Mendoza forests is not homogeneous, resulting in a mosaic of patches with different fire histories. This heterogeneity may be related to vegetation patterns and land use. The temporal variability of fires is strongly influenced by climate variability, which would promote fuel production and subsequent drying. Large fires are concentrated in periods of high interannual precipitation variability. Climate change scenarios predict an increase in temperature and precipitation variability in the region, suggesting future changes in fire dynamics. Our results contribute to the development of fire guidelines for southeastern Mendoza forests, focusing on periods of wet years followed by dry years that favor fire occurrence and spread.

Performance of Regional Climate Model Precipitation Simulations Over the Terrain‐Complex Andes‐Amazon Transition Region

AbstractRegional climate models (RCMs) are widely used to assess future impacts associated with climate change at regional and local scales. RCMs must represent relevant climate variables in the present‐day climate to be considered fit‐for‐purpose for impact assessment. This condition is particularly difficult to meet over complex regions such as the Andes‐Amazon transition region, where the Andean topography and abundance of tropical rainfall regimes remain a challenge for numerical climate models. In this study, we evaluate the ability of 30 regional climate simulations (6 RCMs driven by 10 global climate models) to reproduce historical (1981–2005) rainfall climatology and temporal variability over the Andes‐Amazon transition region. We assess spatio‐temporal features such as spatial distribution of rainfall, focusing on the orographic effects over the Andes‐Amazon “rainfall hotspots” region, and seasonal and interannual precipitation variability. The Eta RCM exhibits the highest spatial correlation (up to 0.6) and accurately reproduces mean annual precipitation and orographic precipitation patterns across the region, while some other RCMs have good performances at specific locations. Most RCMs simulate a wet bias over the highlands, particularly at the eastern Andean summits, as evidenced by the 100%–2,500% overestimations of precipitation in these regions. Annual cycles are well represented by most RCMs, but peak seasons are exaggerated, especially at equatorial locations. No RCM is particularly skillful in reproducing the interannual variability patterns. Results highlight skills and weaknesses of the different regional climate simulations, and can assist in the selection of regional climate simulations for impact studies in the Andes‐Amazon transition zone.

Positive asymmetric responses indicate larger carbon sink with increase in precipitation variability in global terrestrial ecosystems

<p>Climate changes have caused high inter-annual variability in precipitation. However, how the terrestrial ecosystem responds to precipitation variability remains unclear. Using global remote sensing data and a meta-analysis by synthesizing 800 pairwise observations of experimental manipulations worldwide, we quantified the responses of the terrestrial ecosystem net carbon productivity (NEP) to precipitation variability. The results indicate that NEP displays a positive asymmetry in response to precipitation change, e.g., the magnitude of the increase in NEP (33.4%) under water-addition treatments is larger than that of the decline in NEP (-24.62%) under water-reduction treatments. The positive asymmetry of NEP in arid regions (< 500 mm) is larger than that in humid regions (> 500 mm). The former is mainly due to the positive asymmetry in vegetation productivity, while the latter results from the respiration process, i.e., the decrease in soil respiration in water-reduction treatments is stronger than in water-addition treatments. Furthermore, land models reproduce a positive NEP asymmetry in response to precipitation change, but display poor performance in ecosystem respiration (ER) responses owing to uncertainties in simulating soil water content (SWC). The positive asymmetry of NEP in this study implies that the increase in precipitation variability (except extreme anomalies) is conducive to high carbon sink in the global terrestrial ecosystem. Meanwhile, the performance of the models when simulating SWC in response to precipitation in humid regions needs to be further improved to better predict the carbon sink in the terrestrial ecosystem.</p>

Yield and nutritional quality of intercropped forages for organic production in a hot-summer Mediterranean oak grassland ecosystem

Context Forage cultivation plays a pivotal role in sustaining ruminants in resource-limited ecosystems such as the hot-summer Mediterranean agroforestry systems of the Iberian Peninsula comprising oak trees (Quercus spp.) and grassland species. Intercropping techniques can enhance forage yields and nutritional quality. Aims This study assessed the yield and nutritional quality of organic forage mixtures in an Iberian oak grassland ecosystem. Methods Six forage associations were assessed over two growing seasons: vetch (Vicia sativa L.)–triticale (Triticum × Secale), vetch–rye (Secale cereale), vetch–oat (Avena sativa), pea (Pisum sativum L.)–triticale, pea–rye, and pea–oat. The data were analysed using a multivariate procedure. Key results Differences in forage composition influenced nutritional quality but not yield. Vetch-based associations exhibited higher crude protein, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, magnesium, manganese and sulfur contents, along with lower proportions of neutral-detergent fibre and ether extract. The vetch–oat mixture emerged as the highest quality association. Interannual variations in precipitation and temperature caused differences in forage yield, with greater values observed in 2020 than in 2019. Forage associations also had significantly higher nutritional quality in 2020 (increased protein and mineral content, and decreased neutral detergent fibre and lignin). Conclusions All forages demonstrated satisfactory performance and quality, even in the drier conditions of 2019, suggesting high resilience and adaptability to hot-summer Mediterranean oak grassland ecosystems. Implications The findings of this study are relevant for organic farmers in resource-limited ecosystems. This information empowers them to select the most suitable forage species based on the specific agroclimatic conditions of each growing season.
