Development and Testing of a CD‐ROM Program for Improving Adolescent Knowledge of Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The aim of this study was to design a theory-based educational program for adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) using an interactive multimedia CD-ROM and to test its effectiveness in improving knowledge in IBD. Curriculum-based instruction using educational theory and principles was designed for adolescents on an interactive multimedia CD-ROM. Twenty subjects completed summative evaluation of the CD-ROM measuring gain in knowledge about IBD immediately and 9 months after instruction. Subjects found the CD-ROM to be informative, appealing, and easy to use. The mean baseline score of the adolescents on the Crohn's and Colitis Knowledge questionnaire was 12.2 (standard deviation 5.14, range 3-24). After an average of 30 minutes of self-directed learning, adolescent subjects increased their posttest score to a mean of 19.8, a gain of 7.6 points over baseline (95% confidence interval 5.2-10.1, P < 0.0001). Knowledge of medications, disease complications, and gastrointestinal structure and function was gained and retained upon retesting at 9 months with a mean Crohn's and Colitis Knowledge questionnaire score of 17.5 (standard deviation 3.9, range 12-26), which was still an improvement over the mean pretest knowledge score of 12.2 (P < 0.001). Adolescents with IBD have low baseline knowledge about their disease. A rigorously developed interactive educational tool is now available for instructing adolescent patients about their IBD.

Improving informed consent to chemotherapy: A randomized controlled trial of written information versus an interactive multimedia CD-ROM

Objective This randomized controlled trial aimed to determine whether an interactive CD-ROM improved cancer patients’ recall of chemotherapy treatment information over standard written information, and whether demographic, cognitive, and psychological factors better predicted recall than this format of delivery. Methods One-hundred-and-one new patients about to commence chemotherapy were randomized to receive written information or a CD-ROM containing treatment information before giving informed consent. Patients’ recall, concentration, short-term memory, reading comprehension, anxiety, depression, and coping styles were assessed with standardized measures pre-treatment. Seventy-seven patients completed tests for recall of treatment information before their second chemotherapy session. Results Intention-to-treat analyses indicated no significant differences between the written information and CD-ROM groups across recall questions about number of drugs received ( p = .43), treatment length ( p = .23), and treatment goal ( p = .69). Binary logistic regressions indicated that for groups combined different variables predicted each of the recall questions. Conclusion An interactive CD-ROM did not improve cancer patients’ recall of treatment information enough to warrant changes in consent procedures. Practice implications Different variables predicted recall of different treatment aspects highlighting the complex nature of attempting to improve patient recall. Attending to the effect of depression on patient knowledge and understanding appears paramount.

The atlas of North American English: phonetics, phonology and sound change: a multimedia reference tool

The Atlas of North American English provides the first overall view of the pronunciation and vowel systems of the dialects of the U.S. and Canada. The Atlas re-defines the regional dialects of American English on the basis of sound changes active in the 1990s and draws new boundaries reflecting those changes. It is based on a telephone survey of 762 local speakers, representing all the urbanized areas of North America. It has been developed by Bill Labov, one of the leading sociolinguists of the world, together with his colleagues Sharon Ash and Charles Boberg. The Atlas consists of a printed volume accompanied by an interactive CD-ROM. The print and multimedia content is alsoavailable online. Beyond Our Expectations: A Review of an Independent Learning Module in Descriptive Cataloguing at the Queensland University of Technology

SUMMARY This paper discusses an innovative approach to teaching cataloguing. At Queensland University of Technology (QUT), students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Library and Information Studies were involved in an independent learning activity which aimed to develop LIS students' foundation knowledge of descriptive cataloguing, while simultaneously encouraging students to think critically about broader issues that would inevitably impact on their role as information professionals. In the self-study program, learning activities included an interactive multimedia CD-ROM and a printed workbook with exercises, augmented by the opportunity for group discussion in weekly tutorials to enable students to share key aspects of their independent learning. Students were asked to critically evaluate the CD-ROM and the workbook and also to develop their own professional views about the arguments for and against the inclusion of cataloguing in the LIS curriculum. The paper presents the outcomes of this pilot project.

Interactive multimedia is a powerful form of communication with the ability to educate and inform the user while at the same time delight their senses. The cost of computers has plummeted in recent years, making them widely available in the majority of homes. The London Borough of Bromley has embraced this new technology to develop cost-effective promotional materials and has developed four interesting multimedia resource toolkits to date as part of a communication strategy to modify travel behaviour. This paper details the benefits of video and interactive multimedia as part of a communications strategy to promote healthy alternatives to the use of single-occupancy cars. The paper focuses on the development of an interactive multimedia CD-ROM to promote the concept of a Walking Bus. The strategy for increasing the number of Walking Bus routes is outlined and an analysis of the uptake of the parents and children using the buses is made to determine if the multimedia production has helped to meet its objectives. The need to build in flexibility in order to respond to external influences is explained and how the strategy was adapted to cope with some unforeseen public safety concerns that impacted on the rollout programme.

Education about Child Sexual abuse on Interactive Multimedia CD-Rom for Undergraduate Leachers

In many countries, one aspect of health education, namely child sexual abuse, has become an important issue for teachers in pre-schools, primary schools and high schools to address. In Australia, many states now have mandatory reporting of child sexual abuse by teachers to their Principals then to the police or the Department of Families. Consequently, as preparation for this role, all teachers should have appropriate knowledge and attitudes about child sexual abuse. This paper analyses the educational bases of an interactive multimedia CD-Rom module on child sexual abuse designed for use by Australian university undergraduate teachers, to enhance their knowledge and attitudes about child sexual abuse. This application of Bloom's Levels of Thinking Skills as well as Constructivist principles in designing educational multimedia may assist other educational curriculum developers when designing pedagogical interactivities that are appropriate, productive and relevant in teaching about child sexual abuse to undergraduate teachers.

The application of interactive multimedia CD-ROM technology to wildland fire safety training

Interactive multimedia technology has been utilized in the development of a CD-ROM based wildland fire safety training course, Wildland Fire – Safety on the Fireline. Interactive multimedia technology allows delivery of training to a large number of students on a consistent basis. In addition, cost savings can be achieved through reduced learning time, reduced travel, minimal use of instructors, and most of all, through retention of knowledge as a result of using multimedia. The course, Wildland Fire – Safety on the Fireline, was developed and reviewed by a national team of specialists in wildland fire behavior and wildland fire safety with the intent of reducing and/or eliminating injuries and fatalities associated with the suppression of wildland fires. Wildland Fire – Safety on the Fireline focuses on due diligence, situational awareness, entrapment survival, health, equipment, and hazards encountered when working on the fireline. Each of the four sections comprising the course is followed by a board game test in preparation for a final test that is tracked by the computer. An educational intervention for advance directives.

In spite of the passage of the Patient Self-Determination Act in 1991, research indicates that providing information alone has not brought about a significant increase in the completion rates of advance directive (AD) documents. The purpose of this pilot study was to design, implement, and evaluate an interactive multimedia CD-ROM educational program on AD. Study subjects consisted of 31 volunteer elderly men and women in a senior citizens center. An interactive multimedia CD-ROM program was developed in phase I of the study. Subjects were administered on-line pretests and posttests. The effectiveness of the CD-ROM intervention was measured by AD attitude and knowledge changes. A program satisfaction scale was used, and an observer rated the subjects' use of the computer program. Subjects had a statistically significant change in posttest knowledge scores and a high degree of satisfaction and ease in using the computer program. The use of an interactive multimedia CD-ROM program with a touch-sensitive monitor to operate a computer-based AD program for senior citizens shows future promise.

Enhancing English Language Skills using Multimedia: Tried and Tested

This article reports on a research project conducted at the City University of Hong Kong which evaluated the effectiveness of a multimedia-based English language learning programme. A major component of the project was the development and production of an interactive multimedia CD-ROM, Business English, which constituted the basis for the enhanced English language proficiency programme. Results of the study indicate that students who completed the syllabus in a multimedia-enhanced mode demonstrated significant improvement in listening skills when compared with students who completed the same syllabus in the traditional classroom mode. The results also demonstrate positive attitudinal changes for the multimedia-enhanced mode of learning. Additionally, the article elaborates on the teaching-learning experience from the student and facilitator perspective.
