A scheme of AR-based personalized interactive broadcasting service in terrestrial digital broadcasting system

This paper proposes a AR-based personalized interactive broadcasting system via broadcast and broadband networks in terrestrial digital broadcasting system (DTV) environment. Augmented reality (AR) technology is a kind of mixed reality which 2D/3D graphics are integrated into the real world in order to enhance user experience and enrich information. A goal of AR-based interactive broadcasting system is to enable broadcasting program using AR technology to blend augmented content (2D/3D graphic object) with broadcasting content in real-time on receiving terminals. The proposed service scheme enables viewer-selectable augmented broadcasting service being provided from two content providers with authorization by a broadcaster and we show the implemented results under DTV environment.

Hybrid Fiber Coaxial망에서 VoIP 서비스 구현

최근 모바일기기 및 네트워크에 대한 관심이 높아짐에 따라 기존의 IP (internet protocol) 망을 이용하여 음성데이터를 전송하는 기술인 VoIP (voice over internet protocol)서비스가 급속히 확산됨에 따라 무선 인터넷망을 활용하여 언제 어디서나 저렴한 음성 통화 서비스가 가능해졌다. 그리고 디지털방송서비스가 보급되면서 방송과 통신의 융합을 통해 광대역케이블망을 이용하는 HFC (hybrid fiber coaxial)망 기술은 기존의 통신시스템 및 망설비를 활용하여 양방향 방송서비스 및 인터넷, 전화 등 다양한 신규 서비스를 제공하고 있다. 따라서 실제 HFC 인터넷서비스망에서 음성데이터의 품질보장을 위해 VoCM에 UGS-AD를 MTA에는 RTPS를 적용하면 실제 상용 HFC 인터넷서비스망에서 문제가 되는 협소한 상향대역에서의 음성데이터 전송을 원활히 수행할 수 있음을 확인하였으며, HFC 인터넷서비스 망에서 음성데이터의 QoS개선을 통해 기존 대비 개선된 VoIP서비스를 구현하는 방안을 제시하였다. As interest in mobile devices and networks has increased recently, voice over internet protocol (VoIP) service, which is a technology for transmitting voice data using an existing internet protocol (IP) network, has rapidly spread, Cheap voice call service has become possible. As the digital broadcasting service becomes popular, hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) network technology, which uses broadband cable network through fusion of broadcasting and communication, utilizes existing communication system and network equipment to provide various new services such as interactive broadcasting service. Therefore, if UGS-AD is applied to VoCM and RTPS is applied to MTA in order to guarantee the quality of voice data in actual HFC Internet service network, it is possible to smoothly perform voice data transmission in narrow upstream band which is a problem in actual commercial HFC network We also proposed a method to improve VoIP service by improving QoS of voice data in HFC Internet service network.

Efficient signal detection technique for interactive digital broadcasting system with multiple antennas

DVB standards are currently being implemented in various countries, not only in Europe, but also around the world. In order to meet various consumers' demands, the DVB standards support interactive services. Among the interactive broadcasting services, DVB-RCT based on OFDM can be used for interactive broadcasting service in terrestrial broadcasting network. To improve the DVB-RCT system performance, a combining of MIMO signal processing with OFDM is very efficient solution. To detect the received MIMO signal with low complexity, an efficient detection technique with K-best scheme is proposed in this paper. The proposed technique can overcome the limitations of K-best scheme which are performance limitation and high complexity.

Design of Multi-dimensional Contents Retrieval UI for Mobile IPTV

Since two-way interactive broadcasting service began, remote controls have been fitted with 4 color buttons, which enables interaction and convenience to increase between users and content. Currently, diverse studies on IPTV are in progress. Particularly, as the mobile market rapidly grows, studies on mobile IPTV and on linkage with other media are constantly increasing. However, mobile IPTV has never been studied until now. In that sense, this present study attempted to design a mobile-based IPTV UI that could use a multi-dimensional search method based on consistent criteria for content search. As a result, the proposed IPTV UI is fitted with more usability and functionality for 4 color buttons. The UI designed in this study was compared to the IMDb Android Application, which uses GOMS-KLM. The results showed that the performance process was reduced by three stages, and that the performance time was reduced by more than 17.9%. Therefore, the conclusion can be reached that the proposed UI is effective for a fast search of contents.

Design and implementation of the interactive multimedia broadcasting services in DVB-H

DVB-H is a mobile digital video broadcasting technology based on DVB-T with the advantages of time-slicing and multiprotocol encapsulation?forward error correction (MPE-FEC) to reduce the power consumption and enhance the stability of receiver. The encapsulated data is compatible with the Internet Protocol which makes the integration of broadcast and telecommunication much easier. Therefore, digital content can be transmitted by adding encapsulation for each layer. In this paper, we developed a portable middleware for DVB-H clients. It could parse the Transport Stream according to the IP Data Casting (IPDC) protocol stack to achieve interactive multimedia services. Moreover, channel information contained in Electronic Service Guide (ESG) could also be decoded. Several applications were developed on our middleware to demonstrate its feasibility as an interactive multimedia platform.

디지털 방송 서비스의 직관적 접근을 위한 네비게이션 인터페이스 설계

Traditional broadcasting environment is merged with various interactive broadcasting services, and the users use these services through Set-Top-Boxes. But they have limited user interfaces, which are not suitable for TV environments by adopting internet formats. Therefore, this paper suggests a User Navigating Interface which helps the audiences to select and watch their favorite channels more effectively. Firstly, this paper analyzes EPG interface - the most basic service in interactive broadcasting. Secondly, it suggests a user interface and service structure suitable in the network-integrated TV environment.

Interactive broadcast services for live soccer video based on instant semantics acquisition

This paper presents a system for providing interactive broadcast services for live soccer video that is based on instant semantics acquisition. Currently, we have implemented two such interactive services: live event alert and on-the-fly language selection. The live event alert service has a small time lag of about 30 s for a short video clip to reach its final viewer and at most 1.5 min for a long clip of the live event. The on-the-fly language selection service allows users to choose their preferred contents and preferred language. The motivation for this work is that such interactive services will greatly increase the value of live soccer video. Currently, similar systems attempt to derive semantics of a soccer game from gamelog in freestyle text format and low-level features of the video, which is a challenging task. In this paper, we tackle this challenge with a combination of both gamelog input tool and targeted algorithm proposed in this paper. Our system is powered by our proposed semantic gamelog input tool that facilitates fast and accurate input of a semantic gamelog that contains basic semantic information of atomic events. When an interesting event occurs, our system performs boundary detection of these events by combining features extracted from the video with additional information from the semantic gamelog. This additional information facilitates our system to achieve accurate and very fast boundary detection of these events to support our live event alert service. Our system also implements a gamelog translation machine which translates the semantic gamelog (encoded in a game-specific code) into any natural language, provided that there is a configuration file for that language. Combining our gamelog translation machine with existing text-to-speech technology, we provide the on-the-fly language selection service. (Currently, our system supports English, Chinese, and Malay.)

Development of T-DMB Receiver Linking with CDMA Network for Interactive Data Broadcasting Services

In this paper, we present the configuration diagram of the interactive Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) system using the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) telecommunication network for the interactive broadcasting services. The system consists of a T-DMB transmission system, an interactive receiver with a CDMA module, and a return channel server. We also describe the protocol stack for providing data broadcasting service in T-DMB and propose a variety of interactive broadcasting service based on it. In order to verify the proposed service, we design and implement an interactive T-DMB receiver with a CDMA module. And also a return channel server is operated to test it, which includes the interactive contents produced in advance, responding user's request. Under the constructed test environment, the proposed service and the newly designed receiver were verified. This means that new interactive services in digital broadcasting are possible on the move by using mobility of T-DMB and CDMA.1

Development of a T-DMB extended WIPI platform for interactive mobile broadcasting services

In this paper, we present the architecture of the interactive terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) system using the code division multiple access (CDMA) network for the new interactive broadcasting services. We also propose the novel structure of the novel platform based on wireless Internet platform for interoperability (WIPI), which is the standard specifications for the mobile platform in Korea, to co-operate broadcasting and telecommunication. The proposed extended WIPI platform is implemented as an emulator on PC, and an integrated browser which shows multimedia broadcasting data including AV contents and interactive data returned through the telecommunication network, is developed to carry on with it. And then to verify the proposed platform and the interactive mobile broadcasting services, we implemented the integrated receiver as well as the data broadcasting server and the return channel server. Users can get interactive services or more information about broadcasting contents through CDMA network by using the proposed platform. This shows a possibility of new interactive services in digital broadcasting by using mobility of T-DMB and CDMA

Talk-Back and Talk-Together TV-Service Concept and Possibility of User Acceptance-

Rapidly emerging IP-based broadband technologies allow multimedia communications between viewers and TV broadcasting stations as well as among viewers. Talk-back and Talk-together TV systems provide new forms of interactive broadcasting services and enhance the current experiences of TV viewing. We first defined Talk-back and Talk-together TV systems and then analyzed their possible service scenarios for extracting required system functionalities. Furthermore, we carried out a Talk-together TV system experimental study that examined user reactions to the Talk-together TV sessions on quiz and soccer programs by connecting the subject viewers with different communication media; none, text-only, audio, audiovisual, physically together. The results indicate that there are future possibilities of user acceptance for the new TV services that utilize bidirectional multimedia links among viewers.

Broadband satellite system technologies for effective use of the 12-30 GHz radio spectrum

Broadband satellite systems are an integral part of communications technology, aiming to provide a wide range of services to a society that increasingly expects ubiquitous access to broadband telecommunication services. Key drivers behind the development of these systems include rapid growth in the use of the Internet, PC- and TV-based e-commerce and interactive broadcasting services. In the UK, broadband satellite service trials are currently being conducted by BT, amongst others, with a primary objective of providing services to areas where asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) technology has not been deployed. Two key factors for the success of broadband satellite technology lie in the area of overcoming constraints associated with frequency spectrum and orbital resources. This paper provides a review of technologies employed in geostationary (GSO) and nongeostationary (NGSO) satellite networks designed for the provision of broadband services to fixed and portable ground terminals within the 12 to 30 GHz frequency range. After reviewing the system design parameters related to the use of the radio frequency spectrum, consideration is given to the issues involved in sharing spectrum between GSO and NGSO satellite networks.
