Exploiting Locality in Full Configuration Interaction Quantum Monte Carlo for Fast Excitation Generation.

In this paper, we propose an improved excitation generation algorithm for the full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo method, which is particularly effective in systems described by localized orbitals. The method is an extension of the precomputed heat-bath strategy of Holmes et al., with more effective sampling of double excitations and a novel approach for nonuniform sampling of single excitations. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm for a chain of 30 hydrogen atoms with atom-localized orbitals, a stack of benzene molecules, and an Fe(II)-porphyrin model complex, whereby we show an overall efficiency gain by a factor of two to four, as measured by variance reduction per wall-clock time.

Performance of a one-parameter correlation factor for transcorrelation: Study on a series of second row atomic and molecular systems.

In this work, we investigate the performance of a recently proposed transcorrelated (TC) approach based on a single-parameter correlation factor [E. Giner, J. Chem. Phys. 154, 084119 (2021)] for systems involving more than two electrons. The benefit of such an approach relies on its simplicity as efficient numerical-analytical schemes can be set up to compute the two- and three-body integrals occurring in the effective TC Hamiltonian. To obtain accurate ground state energies within a given basis set, the present TC scheme is coupled to the recently proposed TC-full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo method [Cohen et al., J. Chem. Phys. 151, 061101 (2019)]. We report ground state total energies on the Li-Ne series, together with their first cations, computed with increasingly large basis sets and compare to more elaborate correlation factors involving electron-electron-nucleus coordinates. Numerical results on the Li-Ne ionization potentials show that the use of the single-parameter correlation factor brings on average only a slightly lower accuracy (1.2 mH) in a triple-zeta quality basis set with respect to a more sophisticated correlation factor. However, already using a quadruple-zeta quality basis set yields results within chemical accuracy to complete basis set limit results when using this novel single-parameter correlation factor. Calculations on the H2O, CH2, and FH molecules show that a similar precision can be obtained within a triple-zeta quality basis set for the atomization energies of molecular systems.

Combined unitary and symmetric group approach applied to low-dimensional Heisenberg spin systems

A novel combined unitary and symmetric group approach is used to study the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model and related Fermionic systems in a total spin-adapted representation, using a linearly-parameterised Ansatz for the many-body wave function. We show that a more compact ground-state wave function representation---indicated by a larger leading ground-state coefficient---is obtained when combining the symmetric group ${\mathcal{S}}_{n}$, in the form of permutations of the underlying lattice site ordering, with the cumulative spin coupling based on the unitary group $\mathrm{U}(n)$. In one-dimensional systems the observed compression of the wave function is reminiscent of block-spin renormalization group approaches, and allows us to study larger lattices (here taken up to 80 sites) with the spin-adapted full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo method, which benefits from the sparsity of the Hamiltonian matrix and the corresponding sampled eigenstates that emerge from the reordering. We find that in an optimal lattice ordering the configuration state function with highest weight already captures with high accuracy the spin-spin correlation function of the exact ground-state wave function. This feature is found for more general lattice models, such as the Hubbard model, and ab initio quantum chemical models, exemplified by one-dimensional hydrogen chains. We also provide numerical evidence that the optimal lattice ordering for the unitary group approach is not generally equivalent to the optimal ordering obtained for methods based on matrix-product states, such as the density-matrix renormalization group approach.

Benchmark study of Nagaoka ferromagnetism by spin-adapted full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo

We investigate Nagaoka ferromagnetism in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with one hole using the spin-adapted ($SU(2)$ conserving) full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo method. This methodology gives us access to the ground state energies of all possible spin states $S$ of finite Hubbard lattices, here obtained for lattices up to 24 sites, for various interaction strengths ($U$). The critical interaction strength, $U_c$, at which the Nagaoka transition occurs is determined for each lattice and is found to be proportional to the lattice size for the larger lattices. Below $U_c$ the overall ground states are found to favour the minimal total spin ($S=\frac 1 2$), and no intermediate spin state is found to be the overall ground state on lattices larger than 16 sites. However, at $U_c$, the energies of all the spin states are found to be nearly degenerate, implying that large fluctuations in total spin can be expected in the vicinity of the Nagaoka transition.

Population control bias and importance sampling in full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo

Population control is an essential component of any projector Monte Carlo algorithm. This control mechanism usually introduces a bias in the sampled quantities that is inversely proportional to the population size. In this paper, we investigate the population control bias in the full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo method. We identify the precise origin of this bias and quantify it in general. We show that it has different effects on different estimators and that the shift estimator is particularly susceptible. We derive a re-weighting technique, similar to the one used in diffusion Monte Carlo, for correcting this bias and apply it to the shift estimator. We also show that by using importance sampling, the bias can be reduced substantially. We demonstrate the necessity and the effectiveness of applying these techniques for sign-problem-free systems where this bias is especially notable. Specifically, we show results for large one-dimensional Hubbard models and the two-dimensional Heisenberg model, where corrected FCIQMC results are comparable to the other high-accuracy results.

Time Propagation and Spectroscopy of Fermionic Systems Using a Stochastic Technique.

We present a stochastic method for solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, generalizing a ground state full configuration interaction quantum MonteCarlo method. By performing the time integration in the complex plane close to the real-time axis, the numerical effort is kept manageable and the analytic continuation to real frequencies is efficient. This allows us to perform abinitio calculation of electron spectra for strongly correlated systems. The method can be used as a cluster solver for embedding schemes.

A deterministic alternative to the full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo method.

Development of exponentially scaling methods has seen great progress in tackling larger systems than previously thought possible. One such technique, full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo, is a useful algorithm that allows exact diagonalization through stochastically sampling determinants. The method derives its utility from the information in the matrix elements of the Hamiltonian, along with a stochastic projected wave function, to find the important parts of Hilbert space. However, the stochastic representation of the wave function is not required to search Hilbert space efficiently, and here we describe a highly efficient deterministic method that can achieve chemical accuracy for a wide range of systems, including the difficult Cr2 molecule. We demonstrate for systems like Cr2 that such calculations can be performed in just a few cpu hours which makes it one of the most efficient and accurate methods that can attain chemical accuracy for strongly correlated systems. In addition our method also allows efficient calculation of excited state energies, which we illustrate with benchmark results for the excited states of C2.

Efficient Heat-Bath Sampling in Fock Space.

We introduce an algorithm for sampling many-body quantum states in Fock space. The algorithm efficiently samples states with probability approximately proportional to an arbitrary function of the second-quantized Hamiltonian matrix element connecting the sampled state to the current state. We apply the new sampling algorithm to the recently developed semistochastic full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (S-FCIQMC) method, a semistochastic implementation of the power method for projecting out the ground state energy in a basis of Slater determinants. Our new sampling method requires modest additional computational time and memory compared to uniform sampling but results in newly spawned weights that are approximately of the same magnitude, thereby greatly improving the efficiency of projection. A comparison in efficiency between our sampling algorithm and uniform sampling is performed on the all-electron nitrogen dimer at equilibrium in Dunning's cc-pVXZ basis sets with X ∈ {D, T, Q, 5}, demonstrating a large gain in efficiency that increases with basis set size. In addition, a comparison in efficiency is performed on three all-electron first-row dimers, B2, N2, and F2, in a cc-pVQZ basis, demonstrating that the gain in efficiency compared to uniform sampling also increases dramatically with the number of electrons.

Symmetry Breaking and Broken Ergodicity in Full Configuration Interaction Quantum Monte Carlo.

The initiator full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo method (i-FCIQMC) is applied to the binding curve of N2 in Slater-determinant Hilbert spaces formed of both canonical restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF) and symmetry-broken unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) orbitals. By explicit calculation, we demonstrate that the technique yields the same total energy for both types of orbital but that as the bond is stretched, FCI expansions expressed in unrestricted orbitals are substantially more compact than their restricted counterparts and more compact than those expressed in split-localized orbitals. These unrestricted Hilbert spaces, however, become nonergodic toward the dissociation limit, and the total wave function may be thought of as the sum of two weakly coupled, spin-impure, functions whose energies are nonetheless very close to the exact energy. In this limit, it is a challenge for i-FCIQMC to resolve a spin-pure wave function. The use of unrestricted natural orbitals is a promising remedy for this problem, as their expansions are more strongly weighted toward lower excitations of the reference, and they provide stronger coupling to higher excitations than do UHF orbitals.

Investigation of the full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo method using homogeneous electron gas models

Using the homogeneous electron gas (HEG) as a model, we investigate the sources of error in the "initiator" adaptation to full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (i-FCIQMC), with a view to accelerating convergence. In particular, we find that the fixed-shift phase, where the walker number is allowed to grow slowly, can be used to effectively assess stochastic and initiator error. Using this approach we provide simple explanations for the internal parameters of an i-FCIQMC simulation. We exploit the consistent basis sets and adjustable correlation strength of the HEG to analyze properties of the algorithm, and present finite basis benchmark energies for N = 14 over a range of densities 0.5 ≤ r(s) ≤ 5.0 a.u. A single-point extrapolation scheme is introduced to produce complete basis energies for 14, 38, and 54 electrons. It is empirically found that, in the weakly correlated regime, the computational cost scales linearly with the plane wave basis set size, which is justifiable on physical grounds. We expect the fixed-shift strategy to reduce the computational cost of many i-FCIQMC calculations of weakly correlated systems. In addition, we provide benchmarks for the electron gas, to be used by other quantum chemical methods in exploring periodic solid state systems.

The sign problem and population dynamics in the full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo method

The recently proposed full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo method allows access to essentially exact ground-state energies of systems of interacting fermions substantially larger than previously tractable without knowledge of the nodal structure of the ground-state wave function. We investigate the nature of the sign problem in this method and how its severity depends on the system studied. We explain how cancellation of the positive and negative particles sampling the wave function ensures convergence to a stochastic representation of the many-fermion ground state and accounts for the characteristic population dynamics observed in simulations.

Breaking the carbon dimer: The challenges of multiple bond dissociation with full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo methods

The full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) method, as well as its "initiator" extension (i-FCIQMC), is used to tackle the complex electronic structure of the carbon dimer across the entire dissociation reaction coordinate, as a prototypical example of a strongly correlated molecular system. Various basis sets of increasing size up to the large cc-pVQZ are used, spanning a fully accessible N-electron basis of over 10(12) Slater determinants, and the accuracy of the method is demonstrated in each basis set. Convergence to the FCI limit is achieved in the largest basis with only O[10(7)] walkers within random errorbars of a few tenths of a millihartree across the binding curve, and extensive comparisons to FCI, CCSD(T), MRCI, and CEEIS results are made where possible. A detailed exposition of the convergence properties of the FCIQMC methods is provided, considering convergence with elapsed imaginary time, number of walkers and size of the basis. Various symmetries which can be incorporated into the stochastic dynamic, beyond the standard abelian point group symmetry and spin polarisation are also described. These can have significant benefit to the computational effort of the calculations, as well as the ability to converge to various excited states. The results presented demonstrate a new benchmark accuracy in basis-set energies for systems of this size, significantly improving on previous state of the art estimates.
