Ultra-long haul high speed 96 × 40 GB/s radio over IsOWC system employing advanced modulation scheme

Abstract This paper successfully demonstrates that point-to-point (P2P) superdense wavelength division multiplexing (SDWDM) based on the radio over intersatellite optical wireless communication (Ro-IsOWC) system of 96 channels separated by a 100 GHz bandwidth with 40 GB/s data rate on each stream at a 10,000 km link range has been designed and investigated. The performance of the proposed work has been evaluated by considering the comparison of advanced modulation schemes such as carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ), duobinary return-to-zero (DRZ), and modified duobinary return-to-zero (MDRZ) with an optical preamplifier on the bases of bit error rate (BER), quality factor, eye height, and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) in the clear weather condition. Moreover, the effects of internal parameters such as transceiver aperture diameter and gain of an optical amplifier also have been analyzed with an optimized modulated system. Apart from this, the system performance also has been assessed under varying data rates and OWC frequency ranges with the best-suited modulation format. It has been found that the CSRZ modulation format has shown robust performance and can achieve BER as better as 10−09 with a 5.5 dB quality factor for all wavelengths. It also has been observed that the quality of the received signal deteriorates below an unacceptable value for data rate and link distance beyond 40 GB/s and 10,000 km, respectively.

Abstract Reach enhancement in inter-satellite optical wireless communication systems (IsOWC) is an utmost requirement due to ever-increasing internet usage all over the globe. Optical code division multiplexing is prominently incorporated for security enhancement in IsOWC systems, however, limited in terms of total reach. Therefore, in this work, a 120 Gbps capacity-based hybrid OCDMA and mode division multiplexed (MDM) IsOWC is presented using different optical amplifiers such as semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), and Raman fiber amplifier (RFA). Moreover, the combined effects of Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) with EDFA/SOA/RFA and Hermite–Gaussian (HG) modes with EDFA/SOA/RFA amplifiers are investigated. Results revealed that the proposed system can cover 5000 km IsOWC link within acceptable BER limits and EDFA with LG modes is found to be the best technique.

A high-speed multi input multi output Ro-IsOWC system incorporating Manchester coding and E-LP, O-LP modes

Abstract Aiming at the link length enhancement in intersatellite optical wireless communication (IsOWC) system, considering the hybrid radiofrequency (RF)-enabled multi input multi output (MIMO) system, we accentuate the realization of medium earth orbit (MEO)-based IsOWC system by incorporating different modulation formats such as return to zero (RZ), non-RZ (NRZ), and Manchester coding. A 40 Gbps and 16 × 8 MIMO system enabling 40 GHz RF signal is proposed by using even linear polarized (E-LP) mode, and odd linear polarized (O-LP) mode over a 22,000 km IsOWC channel. Further, a performance comparison of NRZ, RZ, and Manchester coding is performed at different IsOWC distances in terms of the Q factor. Results revealed that the proposed system with Manchester coding and O-LP mode can successfully cover the 22,000 km IsOWC link length by exhibiting a 6.35 Q factor value.

Performance analysis of 2λ × 160 Gbps optical single sideband (OSSB) generation in polarization division multiplexed (PDM) QPSK based satellite wireless optical systems (SWOS)

Abstract Capacity enhancement in satellite wireless optical systems (SWOS) systems is an ultimate task to accomplish due to ever-increasing internet services and it can be achieved by incorporating polarization division multiplexed (PDM) quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK). Herein, 2λ × 160 Gbps intersatellite optical wireless communication (IsOWC) system is proposed using PDM-QPSK. Spectral efficiency is prime requirement to enhance the performance of system and therefore, a suppression of optical single sideband (OSSB) in PDM-QPSK carrier spectrum is performed by employing fiber Bragg grating with 0.99 reflectivity. Proposed system is investigated in terms of log BER and error vector magnitude percentage (EVMP) at varied SWOS distances. Further, effects of the digital signal processing (DSP) in the receiver are analyzed by considering and neglecting the module. Results revealed that suppression of sidebands and employment of DSP enhance the system performance and competent to cover 52,000 km SWOS distance.

Inter-satellite optical wireless communication (IsOWC) systems challenges and applications: a comprehensive review

Abstract Satellite communication, in over half a century have attained remarkable breakthrough in high speed transmission. These innovations, on the other hand, have come in tandem with significant performance improvements in other IT and telecommunications systems. As a result, these significant benefits are not as visible to the broader public as they would be as if this burst of performance had occurred in isolation. In nutshell, space satellite communication using optical technology provide powerful alternative to radio frequency (RF) and make communication reliable and cost effective. Satellite communications systems allow a whole new race of civilian and defence operations in surveillance, telecommunications, object tracking and space exploration. Since independent satellites are restricted by volume, space and strength, small satellites production in bulk clusters may be effective for a range of wildfire monitoring, science missions, mapping in gravity and water management exploration, among others. The development of communications satellites would provide for a more comprehensive understanding of the near-earth environment as well as a more efficient and cost-effective way of reaching space, thanks to the utilisation of multi-satellite systems. As a result, when satellites are designing, IsOWC is an utmost point to be considered. The numerous researches being performed in the satellite communications for introducing multi communications based on different orbits are described in this study. IsOWC systems over radio frequency based communication are preferred due to large bandwidth, high speed, absence of electromagnetic interference (EMI), lower transmission losses and improved security. We also present a detailed listing of challenges in Is-OWC such as Doppler shift, point ahead angle, satellite vibration and tracking, acquisition tracking and pointing (ATP) and background noise sources.

Terabyte capacity-enabled (10 x 400 Gbps) Is-OWC system for long-haul communication by incorporating dual polarization quadrature phase shift key and mode division multiplexing scheme

Inter-satellite optical wireless communication (Is-OWC) links can become promising solutions to realize the next-generation high-speed communication services. The operation of Global Navigation Satellite Systems can be improved with the use of Is-OWC links through ranging and communication services. However, the key challenge in Inter-satellite link (ISL) is its effective range which is limited due to pointing errors. In this work, we propose to develop a high-capacity and long-reach Is-OWC link by incorporating hybrid mode division multiplexing (MDM) and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) schemes to transmit ten independent channels over 40000kms Is-OWC link. Each channel is capable of carrying 400Gbps data which is encoded by the dual polarization quadrature phase shift key technique with required signal to noise ratio (SNR) and received power. The proposed Is-OWC link satisfies the enhanced communication within Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. The proposed Is-OWC is further evaluated under the impact of space turbulences, particularly transmitter and receiver pointing errors. The result reported that the proposed Is-OWC link can transmit 4Tbps data over 16000kms with the transmitter pointing error of 2μrad and receiver pointing error of 1μrad.

Performance Analysis and Evaluation of Inter-Satellite Optical Wireless Communication System (IsOWC) from GEO to LEO at Range 45000 km

The importance of free-space optical (FSO) communication has increased during the last decade, introducing its unique features such as its high data rate, license-free spectrum, ease of deployability, and low power consumption. In the future, communication between low earth orbit (LEO) and geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellites will be commonly established by using inter-satellite optical wireless communication (IsOWC) systems. That enables GEO satellites to relay information to and from LEO satellites and fixed Earth stations that otherwise cannot transmit/receive data permanently. IsOWC systems are the most effective application of the FSO, and they will be favorited shortly because of their features. In this work, we established an IsOWC between GEO and LEO satellites at a distance of 45000 km to achieve a target bit error rate (BER) equal to 10 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">−6</sup> . Furthermore, we proposed an IsOWC system with suitable operating wavelengths. Physical techniques such as the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) technique and a wave division multiplexing (WDM) technique are employed.

Performance Analysis of Inter-satellite Optical Wireless Communication (IsOWC) System with Multiple Transmitters/Receivers

The satellite communications networks have certainly been innovated recently by Inter-satellite optical wireless communication (IsOWC) networks. The prerequisite for next generation mobile satellite communication is superior multimedia facility for consumers at anytime and anywhere. The proposed optical communication system is designed and analysed to improve data transmission quality over the distance between two geostationary (GEO) satellites greater than 36000 km. This trend is to achieve high speed transmission with minimizing the presence possibility of free space loss in transmission that can occur in satellite communication via the longest range. Numerous transceivers IsOWC is a hopeful way to deal with be utilized related to different earth stations as a system utilized between the geosynchronous satellites. The wireless transmission creates the opportunity at high optical power without free space loss. The results of the simulated system showed that with 32 transmitters/receivers IsOWC, the Q-factor values of 36.526, 12.176 and 4.015 are obtained at 38000 km range at laser power of (19, 14 and 9) dBm, respectively. The proposed system is operated at 19 dBm optical power and different values of aperture size and the best values of Q-factor and BER are 41 and 10−250, respectively, for highest diameter value of 20 cm. The operation of the system with various values of bit rate is verified as well. It is seen that the best system performance is at 0.032 Gb/s bit rate and will be of lower as the bit rate increases until it roughly fixes at 32 Gb/s. This research offers the treatment for the transmission problem for ultra-speed application in mobile satellite systems.

Influence of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technique on the low earth orbit intersatellite systems performance

Abstract This work discusses the effect of wavelength division multiplexing on performance of intersatellite link. Intersatellite optical wireless communication (IsOWC) system is simulated by using OptiSystem software. Number of multiplexing channels involve on system performance. Bit rate is an operating parameter that determines the quality of the signal. Also, wavelength and distance between satellite transmitter and satellite receiver determine the system performance. In this article, the max Q factor, received power, and optical signal/noise ratio are the major leading performance parameters.

Orbit to Orbit Intersatellite Optical Wireless Communications with Customized Information Security Management System

This paper has presented the effect of erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) as a pre and post amplifier in intersatellite wireless optical communication system and it is compared with semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) as pre and post amplifiers in the same communication system design. The study is analyzed the effect of changing propagation distances between satellites spacing. Gain and bit error rate are investigated against the transmitter input power increase in both systems. The comparison between EDFA and SOA in intersatellite optical wireless communication system with different input parameters (input power and physical amplifier dimensions) is demonstrated. We are building information security management system using FEC, which is a digital signal processing technique used to enhance data reliability.

Performance analysis of 160 Gbit/s single-channel PDM-QPSK based inter-satellite optical wireless communication (IsOWC) system

Inter-satellite optical wireless communication (IsOWC) links have been exploited by many researchers as a viable technology to transmit information amongst two or more satellites using optical carrier signals and outer space as the medium of propagation medium. IsOWC links can securely transmit information all over the globe. The present study discusses a spectral-efficient large-speed single-channel IsOWC system using polarization division multiplexed-quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) scheme. Coherent detection has been used at the receiver terminal for receiver sensitivity improvement. A digital signal processing (DSP) module to mitigate losses due to nonlinearity effects and for estimating carrier phase has been used at the receiver. We have analyzed the proposed link performance by investigating the required optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) to achieve a target bit error rate (BER). The reported results show a faithful 160 Gbit/s transmission at 40,000 km with good BER. Also, we numerically investigate the OSNR performance of link for increasing pointing errors. Further, a comparative analysis of the proposed link with previous literature illustrates a better performance in terms of spectral efficiency and figure of merit (maximum transmission range $${\times} $$ information transmission rate). The integration of PDM-QPSK with coherent detection and DSP provides a viable platform to develop spectral-efficient IsOWC links.

20Gbit/s-40 GHz OFDM based LEO-GEO Radio over Inter-satellite optical wireless communication (Ro-IsOWC) system using 4-QAM modulation

This work discusses the modeling and the numerical investigation of Ro-IsOWC link between a low earth orbit LEO and geosynchronous earth orbit GEO satellite. 4-level quadrature amplitude modulation 4-QAM signal with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing OFDM technique has been used to transmit high-speed data between two satellites separated at 35,000 km link distance in outer space. The proposed link performance has been numerically evaluated under the impact of operating wavelength, transmission distance, input power, pointing errors, additional losses, and receiver aperture diameter. Signal-to-noise ratio SNR and received electrical power of the information signal are considered as the performance metrics to evaluate the link performance. Through numerical simulations, we report a successful transportation of 20Gbit/s-40GHz information between two satellites over a transmission distance of 35,000 km using the proposed Ro-IsOWC system. Also, an improved link performance has been investigated in this work by using a Square root module SRm technique at the receiver terminal for non-linearity compensation.

Design of 3.84 Tbps hybrid WDM–PDM based inter-satellite optical wireless communication (IsOWC) system using spectral efficient orthogonal modulation scheme

Inter satellite optical wireless communication (IsOWC) is an emerging transmission technology which is capable of transporting high-speed data between two satellites estranged in outer space and revolving in the same or different orbits. IsOWC links have been considered very crucial for the purpose of providing global coverage for information transmission throughout the world. This work reports the modeling and performance investigation of a novel hybrid wavelength division multiplexing–polarization division multiplexing based IsOWC transmission system incorporating an orthogonal modulation scheme combining carrier suppressed return to zero–differential quadrature phase shift keying–polarization shift keying formats to transmit three independent 40 Gbps data streams simultaneously at different signal parameters. The results show a successful transmission of 3.84 Tbps information over 58,000 km link range with acceptable Q Factor (> 6 dB) and BER (≤ 10−9) using the proposed system. The performance comparison of the proposed system with existing work has also been discussed in this paper.

Multiple Transceivers Inter-satellite Optical wireless communication System Performance

This Study clarifies the effect of using multi transceiver channel in the inter-satellite optical wireless communication system. The results obtained in this research have been simulated by optisystem version 7. This study clarifies the impact of applying 16 transceiver on the system performance. Also, it represents comparison between inter-satellite optical wireless communication system using single channel and the other used 16 transceiver at different wavelengths. Then, it clarifies the impact of increasing transmission data rate on the system performance at different propagation distances for 16 transceiver system. The impact of transmitted power on the system performance also has been explained. The performance parameters in our study are quality factor and received power.

Transmitter Aperture Diameter Effect in 40 Gb/s Inter-Satellite Optical Wireless Communication System

Optical wireless communication systems have turned into a state-of-the-art technology because of their superior performance uniqueness and innumerable characteristics, as compared to radio frequency. One optical wireless communication application is Inter-Satellite Optical Wireless Communication. Inter-Satellite Optical Wireless Communication systems can be improved by using, for example, advanced modulation formats and adjusting the aperture diameters. We demonstrate an analysis based on the aperture diameter effect in the transmission of a single channel using a 40 Gb/s Inter-Satellite Optical Wireless Communication system and three different modulation methods, specifically differential phase-shift keying with a duty ratio of 66% or 33% and duobinary. These three modulations were chosen among various modulation formats due to the advantages they provide, i.e., the differential phase-shift keying provides stronger robustness to fiber nonlinearity and duobinary provides higher chromatic dispersion tolerance to mitigate the system requirements for dispersion compensation. The results show the effect of different transmitter aperture diameters (from 2 to 20 cm) at a constant distance (200 km) in terms of the quality factor and minimum Bit Error Rate. We conclude there is a great loss in the small aperture diameter, even in the presence of the best modulation format; therefore, as the aperture diameter increases the Q-factor increases, but some of the increased rise is linear and some changes from linear to non-linear at a fixed Q-factor point equal to 5.63.

Modeling and Performance Analysis of 400 Gbps CO-OFDM Based Inter-satellite Optical Wireless Communication (IsOWC) System Incorporating Polarization Division Multiplexing with Enhanced Detection

In this work, we report the designing and simulative analysis of a novel 400 Gbps coherent detection-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) based inter-satellite optical wireless communication (IsOWC) system incorporating polarization division multiplexing (PDM) for enhancing information carrying capacity of the link. The performance of the proposed system has been discussed for 4-level phase shift keying and quadrature amplitude modulation encoding schemes using signal-to-noise ratio, total received power, and constellation diagram of the received signal as performance metrics. Also, the impact of different parameters such as operating wavelength, transmission power, and receiver pointing error angle on the performance of the proposed system has been investigated. Furthermore, an enhanced detection technique for link reach enhancement has been reported in this work. Finally, the performance of the proposed CO-OFDM based IsOWC system has been compared for with and without using the PDM technique.
