Insect Flight: State of the Field and Future Directions.

The evolution of flight in an early winged insect ancestral lineage is recognized as a key adaptation explaining the unparalleled success and diversification of insects. Subsequent transitions and modifications to flight machinery, including secondary reductions and losses, also play a central role in shaping the impacts of insects on broadscale geographic and ecological processes and patterns in the present and future. Given the importance of insect flight, there has been a centuries-long history of research and debate on the evolutionary origins and biological mechanisms of flight. Here, we revisit this history from an interdisciplinary perspective, discussing recent discoveries regarding the developmental origins, physiology, biomechanics, and neurobiology and sensory control of flight in a diverse set of insect models. We also identify major outstanding questions yet to be addressed and provide recommendations for overcoming current methodological challenges faced when studying insect flight, which will allow the field to continue to move forward in new and exciting directions. By integrating mechanistic work into ecological and evolutionary contexts, we hope that this synthesis promotes and stimulates new interdisciplinary research efforts necessary to close the many existing gaps about the causes and consequences of insect flight evolution.

Socioecological impacts of pine monocultures on Guaraní territories in Argentina: the hidden costs of modern development.

ABSTRACT This study examines the socio-environmental impacts of pine (Pinus taeda) monocultures established by forestry companies on Guaraní territories in the Province of Misiones, Argentina. Conducted from an interdisciplinary perspective, the research addresses the concerns of a Guaraní community (Puente Quemado II) about the effects on their way of life and the potential toxicological risks resulting from changes to their territory including large monocultures of pine. By incorporating inputs from ethnography, ethnobiology, biology, ecology, ecotoxicology and toxicology, the study provides a comprehensive analysis of the impacts of the forest monoculture system on the communities. The findings indicate that the implementation of the monoculture system has negative impacts on the communities in terms of cultural and material resources, as well as toxicological risks. Collectively, these factors represent a high risk to their existence within the territory. However, conditions in the area allow for rapid ecological restoration, which, with appropriate policies, could serve as a strategy for historical repair efforts and the fulfillment of indigenous communities’ rights.

A Multidimensional Exploration of the Interplay between Human Health and Environmental Factors

This research article explores the relationship between human health and the environment, emphasizing the dire need for a holistic view to understand and addressing health challenges. Drawing upon interdisciplinary perspectives from environmental science, public health, epidemiology, and social sciences, the study investigates different environmental factors for example air and water quality, biodiversity loss, environment change, and pollution, and their impact on human health outcomes. Moreover, the paper discusses the relevance of ecosystem services in supporting human health and well-being and examines the potential of nature-based solutions for mitigating health risks associated with environmental degradation. human activities and health-related behaviors exert substantial pressure on the environment. Industrialization, urbanization, and unsustainable resource consumption degrade ecosystems, compromise biodiversity, and exacerbate climate change, thereby threatening environmental health. Deforestation, for instance, not only diminishes biodiversity but also amplifies the risk of zoonotic diseases transmission, as human encroachment brings humans closer to wildlife habitats. Promoting sustainable practices, such as renewable energy adoption and waste reduction, can mitigate environmental degradation while fostering public health. Additionally, enhancing access to healthcare services, particularly in underserved areas, and implementing policies to regulate pollution and safeguard natural resources are paramount. By elucidating the interconnectedness between health and the environment, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the challenges facing global health and provides insights for developing effective policies and interventions to promote sustainable development and improve population health outcomes.

Machine learning(ml) was already developed in the 1940s, but its application value was low due to limited computational power and lack of data. Since then, based on advancements in computer technology and data accumulation, artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning, has gained interdisciplinary attention as a tool for providing insights in the field of design. Recently, numerous prior studies on image generation using artificial intelligence have emerged, reflecting this growing interest. However, from a practical standpoint, there are several criticisms: the images generated by machine learning often lack the resolution required by designers, and they fall short in providing original images. It is worth examining whether the perspectives of these prior studies are becoming teleologically biased. Therefore, this study aims to explore the gap between interdisciplinary discussions and practical applications, seeking to bridge this gap and integrate AI-generated image creation into practical use. This research is based on a literature review of Generative Adversarial Networks(GANs) in machine learning(ml), examining whether the images generated are acceptable from the perspective of product designers. Based on this, we will use text mining methods to perform clustering, information extraction, and sentiment analysis to understand consumer attitudes. Through this approach, we aim to explore the potential use of AI in product design from the standpoint of consumers and practitioners rather than an interdisciplinary perspective.

Neurodevelopmental disorders and family quality of life: emerging trends and future research directions.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders. There is a growing body of literature investigating factors affecting quality of life in families (FQoL) with a child with these disorders. However, there are no studies that trace their knowledge anatomy. Thus, we conducted a scientometric analysis to describe this literature, detect certain variables that could be related to FQoL, and identify tendencies and open questions for future research. A literature search in the Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus was run and identified 3281 publications published between 1975 and 2022. The results suggest an increase in the quantity of publications on FQoL in ASD and ADHD over the last few years (14% and 12%, respectively). For both research fields, the USA published the highest number of documents, showing that the production related to ADHD and FQoL is concentrated in just a few countries. Thematic analysis revealed several clusters, considering quality of life and children as core themes that are still setting trend lines. Moreover, it would be worthwhile to describe and analyze FQoL not only during the childhood of children with ASD and ADHD but also during their adolescence. IMPACT: Although the relationship between family quality of life and neurodevelopmental disorders could be considered novel, there is a growing interest from an interdisciplinary perspective. Family quality of life should be monitored not only during the childhood of children with ASD and ADHD, but also during their adolescence and adulthood. The analysis of the family quality of life in first-degree relatives and its relationship with protective factors (e.g., resilience and social support) should be explored in future studies.

The (In)Vulnerable: the futures of the Halligen in the North Sea in the face of climate change

Islands and small island groups are among the areas most affected by global climate change and face major adaptation challenges. Their role as hotspots of climate change impacts is widely recognized in the scientific literature, and it is not uncommon for small islands to act as poster children for particular climate-related vulnerability. Nonetheless, many island communities have a long tradition of living with oceanic influences, and the question is whether such habitats, where terrestrial and marine ecosystems overlap, have characteristics that contribute to greater self-regulation and resilience. The question is further whether and how the future or possible futures of such an exposed region and society could unfold, considering the negative impact of climate change and the resulting burden of natural disasters. The Halligen in the southern North Sea are an exceptional example of such a situation, and they are to be examined in this study particularly due to their extremely uncertain future. Questions regarding the future arise even more urgently due to the rapidly advancing sea-level rise in the course of climate change. They were already evident in a local field research in 2014 and for current reasons the collected interview material shall be analyzed under this prospective point of view. So what, under these harsh circumstances, might the futures of the Halligen look like? What does it mean for the future of a habitat and a society when the constant risk of storm surges is multiplied by the global risk of climate change and rising sea level? By examining this question from an interdisciplinary perspective in the present study, multiple answers can be provided. The futures differ significantly depending on the perspective from which one looks into the future. However, it is precisely this multidimensionality and heterogeneity that can pose an advantage when considering the unpredictability of future developments. Choosing this very specific region for the study also adds to the benefit – because: If the conditions change, if the strength of the environmental influences change in regions where two ecosystems overlap and which are particularly vulnerable due to their islandness, dealing with and adapting to the consequences of global warming becomes a glimpse into the future of all of us.

Drawing on principles of holism, integrity, historicism, and a value-based approach, scientists have embarked on a comprehensive examination of the historical trajectory of entrepreneurship in Siberia. By integrating insights from various disciplines, including history, economics, and sociology, researchers aim to provide a nuanced understanding of the socio-economic landscape of the region. Utilizing a diverse array of methodological tools, such as comparative-historical analysis, concrete examination, retrospective study, and historical-typological analysis, scientists have endeavored to unravel the complexities of entrepreneurial endeavors in Siberia. Through meticulous archival research and interdisciplinary engagement, researchers have shed light on the activities of merchants across different industries and their impact on the socio-cultural fabric of the region. This article underscores the significance of studying scientific communities dedicated to the history of entrepreneurship in Siberia. By acknowledging the contributions of researchers and elucidating their role in shaping historical narratives, this research aims to highlight the richness and diversity of scientific endeavors in Russian historiography. In conclusion, the study of scientific schools focusing on the history of entrepreneurship in pre-revolutionary Siberia represents a vital aspect of historical scholarship. By embracing interdisciplinary perspectives and methodological pluralism, researchers continue to uncover new insights into the economic, social, and cultural dimensions of entrepreneurial activities in Siberia, thereby enriching our understanding of this pivotal period in Russian history.

The political representation of minoritized groups in times of crisis: Covid-19 and beyond

ABSTRACT Minoritized groups have been severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, highlighting the need to better understand how they and their interests were (not) represented in the political process during this challenging period. We identify common and unique features of Covid-19 and past crises, and discuss why the pandemic may have represented a moment for change before identifying gaps in past research. Finally, we present seven articles in this Special Issue that analyze the political representation of minoritized groups in politics, the news media and online. This Special Issue brings together a diverse group of scholars using different theoretical approaches, methodologies and data sources. Using interdisciplinary and intersectional perspectives, we shed new light on minoritized people’s representation during Covid-19 across the globe, focusing on how ethnic and racial groups have experienced the pandemic themselves.

LDHs and their Derivatives for Electrochemical Energy Storage and Conversion Systems: Design, Insights and Applications

AbstractElectrochemical energy storage and conversion systems (EESCSs), including batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, and water electrolysis technologies, enabling the direct conversion between chemical and electrical energies. They are key to the flexible storage and utilization of renewable energy and play an important role in future energy technologies. The physical and chemical properties of electrode materials significantly influence the performance of EESCSs, necessitating the development of materials with both high cost‐effectiveness and superior electrochemical storage and catalytic capabilities. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), due to their unique properties as high surface area, evenly distributed active sites, and tunable compositions, makes themselves and the derivatives have become focal points in the EESCSs. This review summarizes recent advances of LDH and their derivates for diverse EESCSs applications, aims to elucidate the modification strategies of LDH materials and provide valuable insights for exploring LDH‐derived materials in various electrochemical devices, offering interdisciplinary perspectives for the rational design of LDH‐based materials.

A needs-based perspective on long-term care, obesity, and old age

Abstract Definition of the problem Obesity is a burgeoning challenge for healthcare systems worldwide. In times of demographic change, it also affects an increasing number of older persons, presenting substantial challenges to delivering health and nursing care in both acute and long-term care (LTC) settings. So far, a detailed analysis of the diverse group of 65+ in this field is missing, particularly in the area of LTC. The needs of neither care recipients, nor those of nurses and institutions are monitored, analyzed, or systematically evaluated. Moreover, ethical implications of professional care for older persons with obesity have not yet been discussed in research and policy. Arguments We argue that a needs-based approach is appropriate to address these ethical complexities. We further argue that a comprehensive mapping of the ethical terrain is best from an interdisciplinary and mixed methods perspective. For this, we conduct a scoping review to synthesize the state-of-the-art in both the healthcare and LTC settings; and we focus on challenges reported in case studies from professional care settings in European and North American institutions. Conclusion Our findings point to a lack of research on ethical issues related to the LTC needs of older persons living with obesity and the challenges faced by their professional carers. From the limited number of (case) studies that can be found, however, a series of ethical concerns emerge that have direct import for access, utilization, and quality of care. Accordingly, a new research agenda is needed to inform an ethical approach for policy and practice. It must be rooted in a concern for both care recipients and caregivers in mixed methods studies. Future research should provide criteria for balancing needs, allocating resources and developing practical solutions for people who are confronted with multiple stigma.

Oops, I Sampled Again … the Meaning of “Pastiche” as an Autonomous Concept Under EU Copyright Law

AbstractWith the return of the Metal auf Metal case (Pelham v. Hütter) to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), the Luxembourg court will again be faced with the question under which circumstances the reproduction of parts of a sound recording requires authorisation. When the case was first argued before the EU’s highest court, it revolved around the concept of partial reproduction of a sound recording and an interpretation of the quotation exception. In addition, the defendant had proposed that national courts, in the absence of an applicable exception, could provide for flexibility by allowing creative uses purely based on fundamental rights. The Court rejected this possibility, arguing that something akin to an open norm would create legal uncertainty. Following the first ruling, Germany, where the case originated, implemented the pastiche exception of Art. 5(3)(k) of the Information Society Directive into its national copyright law. In Pelham v. Hütter II, the CJEU is asked to give guidance on the interpretation of the concept of pastiche. Following the introduction of the exception under German law, German courts had interpreted the exception broadly, allowing a variety of derivative artistic uses. This article explores the concept of pastiche from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective. After an overview of the relevant German decisions, it explores the various non-legal meanings of pastiche before comparing the development of the notion in the copyright laws of Italy, France and some other EU Member States. Since the non-legal as well as the different national legal understandings of pastiche do not crystallise a common understanding of the notion, pastiche is subsequently developed as an autonomous concept under EU law. In distinguishing pastiche from parody, which the CJEU developed as an autonomous concept in the Deckmyn case, the article proposes that pastiche should be understood as an exception that broadly permits referential uses that have no elements of humour or mockery – as distinct from parody – but are of an artistic nature. An important role must be assigned to the three-step test, which functions as a framework to balance the interests of rightholders and users in a given case.

Introduction to the Special Thematic Issue "Virtual Reality and Eye Tracking".

Technological advancements have made it possible to integrate eye tracking in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Many new VR/AR headsets already include eye tracking as a standard feature. While its application previously has been mostly limited to research, we now see installations of eye tracking into consumer level VR products in entertainment, training, and therapy. The combination of eye tracking and VR creates new opportunities for end users, creators, and researchers alike: The high level of immersion – while shielded from visual distractions of the physical environment – leads to natural behavior inside the virtual environment. This enables researchers to study how humans perceive and interact with three-dimensional environments in experimentally controlled, ecologically valid settings. Simultaneously, eye tracking in VR poses new challenges to gaze analyses and requires the establishment of new tools and best practices in gaze interaction and psychological research from controlling influence factors, such as simulator sickness, to adaptations of algorithms in various situations. This thematic special issue introduces and discusses novel applications, challenges and possibilities of eye tracking and gaze interaction in VR from an interdisciplinary perspective, including contributions from the fields of psychology, human-computer interaction, human factors, engineering, neuroscience, and education. It addresses a variety of issues and topics, such as practical guidelines for VR-based eye tracking technologies, exploring new research avenues, evaluation of gaze-based assessments, and training interventions.

Unveiling the complex networks of urban tree diversity research: A global perspective.

Ecosystem services offered by urban forests must be proactively managed to remain diverse and sustainable. Recent research findings deserve a systematic synthesis to elucidate inherent knowledge structures and dynamics. This study focused on the urban tree diversity theme from 2000 to 2022. Web of Science Core Collection database provided bibliometric details on academic publications. The data-driven quantitative analysis explored research quantities, emphasis, trends, patterns, linkages, and impacts by countries, institutions, authors, journals, and citations. Publications and research topics have expanded continually, with accelerated growth in recent years. Research activities, outputs and interactions demonstrated conspicuous spatial clustering. A few countries, institutions and researchers generated a notable proportion of publications. Their scholarly contributions were visualized in knowledge graphs as complex networks of nodes and inter-node links. Keyword analysis generated a network to indicate research hotspots and frontiers to steer and prioritize future studies. Recent findings affirmed that cities can harbor substantial tree diversity due to enhanced habitat heterogeneity and successful species adaptation. Aligning tree traits with environmental conditions and management objectives can improve benefits. Urbanization can filter tree traits to shape community assemblages through stressors: habitat degradation, fragmentation and loss, in conjunction with pollution, climate change, and introduced species. Diversity preservation strategies include protecting remnant natural vegetation, connecting green spaces, and restoring complex canopy geometry and biomass structure. The emerging frontiers are marked by modeling future species distributions, leveraging technologies like remote sensing, linking ecology with human values, and committing to community-based stewardship. Management can be upgraded by interdisciplinary perspectives integrating ecological science and social engagement. The findings highlight the need for biodiversity enrichment anchored by native species, trait-matched assemblages, adaptive policies, and community participation to create livable-green cities. This review synthesizes key advances in urban tree ecology and biodiversity research to inform the planning and stewardship of resilient urban forests.

A manifesto for coastal landscape governance: Reframing the relationship between coastal and landscape governance.

There is an urgent demand for substantial reforms in the governance of coastal regions. Recent research advocates for a transformative shift in European coastal governance system towards a landscape governance approach. This perspective, informed by a narrative literature review on coastal and landscape governance, explores the potential value of coastal landscape governance, drawing on the Council of Europe Landscape Convention. Our results, presented in the form of a manifesto, underscore the need to move beyond political administrative boundaries and address all coastal landscapes as socio-ecological systems. It emphasises the necessity for the State to recognise them as a public and common good, establishing a specific governance arena with dedicated actors and institutions. The manifesto also advocates for landscape justice through knowledge co production, urging transformative change and landscape based regional design to envision alternative futures. Additionally, it calls for regionalising coastal landscape governance and invites scholars from other transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives to contribute to this research agenda.

Analysis of Technological Development and Enhancement in Modern Film Noir

This paper explores the visual and technological evolution of film noir, particularly the transition from classic to modern film noir. Originally defined by French film critics, film noir is known for its distinctive low-key lighting and strong visual contrasts, emphasizing a mysterious and dramatic visual presentation. The article first compares low-key lighting in traditional and modern film noir, highlighting modern advancements in controlling lighting and shadows. It then examines color usage in both eras, noting modern noir’s use of low saturation and vivid colors for enhanced emotional impact. Lastly, it explores modern technology’s role in restoring classic film noir, emphasizing high-resolution scanning and digital processing for improved visual and auditory quality while preserving artistic style. These analyses underscore film noir’s adaptation to technological advancements in global cinema. Through these analyses, the paper reveals how film noir has adapted to technological advancements to maintain its significant place in global cinematic art. Nonetheless, it acknowledges limitations, primarily focusing on visual and technological aspects while neglecting potential socio-cultural, political, and economic influences on the genre. Future research could address these gaps by exploring interdisciplinary perspectives and incorporating quantitative methods to provide a more comprehensive understanding of film noir’s evolution.

How values relate to student achievement in upper secondary education: Integrating interdisciplinary perspectives on value beliefs in the school context

AbstractEducational research often refers to the subjective values assigned to aspects of education. Theoretical frameworks from the related disciplines of psychology and sociology applied to the context of education aim to better describe why some students are more motivated in school than others to understand differences in academic outcomes. In the current study, we followed an interdisciplinary approach that aimed to integrate psychological views regarding domain-specific value beliefs (i.e., intrinsic, attainment, utility, cost) and sociological views regarding domain-general values of education (i.e., stimulation, comfort, status, behavioral confirmation) and to investigate how they relate to academic success in upper secondary education. In a sample of 3,775 upper secondary school students in Germany, we found evidence that combining the two perspectives had incremental effects when predicting domain-specific achievement and GPA. We discuss how integrating interdisciplinary theoretical perspectives could foster communication between scientific disciplines and benefit future research in the field of motivation.

Nowadays, the search for the place of the human embryo in the dyad “subject and object” of law seems to be an urgent challenge for legal science due to the rapid development of medical technologies that make it possible to question the only previously known purpose of the human embryo – to be born as a child. By examining the understanding of legal subjects as developed in various legal paradigms, the author of this study seeks to delineate the place of the human embryo within the subject-object duality of law, justifying the legal status of the human embryo as a potential subject of law from the perspective of a communicative conception of law shared by him. The study employs formal-legal methods, as well as analytical, synthesis, comparative, and thought experiment methods, along with elements of an interdisciplinary approach (utilizing findings from medical research on the human embryo to support legal conclusions, thereby contributing to the scientific novelty of the study). In conclusion, the recognition of the human embryo as a potential subject of law necessitates a nuanced understanding of legal subjectivity and the evolving nature of human development. By engaging with interdisciplinary perspectives and communicative theories of law, we can pave the way for a more inclusive and ethically informed approach to legal discourse surrounding embryonic rights and protections.

Appropriation of Digital Machines and Appropriation of Fixed Capital as the Real Appropriation of Social Being: A Comment on Toni Negri’s Article “The Appropriation of Fixed Capital: A Metaphor?”

This article is a reflection and comment on Toni Negri’s essay “The Appropriation of Fixed Capital: A Metaphor?”. The comment first points out aspects of Negri’s reception of Marx. It stresses the continuities of the Grundrisse and Capital. In both, we can find a dialectical concept of technology. Second, this paper points out that Negri’s notion of the appropriation of technology/fixed capital should best be read as a critique of techno-optimism à la Marshall McLuhan and of techno-pessimism à la Martin Heidegger. Negri advances a dialectical concept of appropriation that is focused on the appropriation, and therefore transformation, of technology and society. Third, this reflection asks: What does it mean to appropriate digital machines? Concrete strategies of digital appropriation are outlined. The author argues that commons-public partnerships can be powerful political means of struggle against digital capitalism.Acknowledgement: This article was first published as a book chapter. The Appropriation of Fixed Capital: A Metaphor?

In the debate on the impact of digital technology on society, considering that digital technologies have profoundly changed the way we learn and communicate, and especially the “mode of production”, and remembering that this transformation takes place in an era of capitalist economic hegemony – the hypothesis often arises that the producer is transformed by the use of this machine. There is speculation that the user incorporates the instrumentality of the digital machine. Furthermore, when one recognizes that capitalist production develops its process of value creation by using cognitive labour power (and that this form of value production becomes more and more prominent) the technological incorporation of the cognitive cooperation of workers, seems to become ever more central to capitalist exploitation. Consequently, in the Marxist debate, people have started talking of an “appropriation of fixed capital” by the digitized worker and by the cognitive producer. This article asks: Are these simply metaphors? It discusses the relationship of living labour and digital machines. It stresses that digital machines do not determine society and human fate but can be appropriated by social struggles for the commons. It grounds the analysis of the digital in Karl Marx’s works on technology and fixed capital. It concludes that autonomous spheres of digital self-valorisation can be established through social struggles that aim at advancing social co-operation and the commons.
