The need for inter-destination synchronization for emerging social interactive multimedia applications

Currently, the media consumption paradigm is changing from a single end user to a group shared experience. Now, social communication opportunities may be exploited (e.g., conferencing while watching television), facing lots of technological (e.g., synchronization, universal session handling, scalability) and perceptual (e.g., presence awareness, QoE) challenges. This article focuses on one of these major challenges ahead in new emerging social interactive multimedia applications, which is the synchronization of different media streams across multiple locations, known as inter-destination multimedia synchronization (IDMS). We describe the three kinds of temporal multimedia synchronization, and summarize some related work and examples of applications in which IDMS is needed. The article includes a discussion about an RTP/RTCP-based IDMS solution the authors have been working on, as well as the standardization status regarding this kind of synchronization.

Quality of Experience Assessment of Media Synchronization in Chorus among Multi-Points

In this paper, we apply inter-destination (or group) synchronization control, which adjusts the output timing of media among multiple terminals, to chorus with voice and video among multi-points to synchronize singing voices for the listener. By quality of experience (QoE) assessment, we show that the inter-destination synchronization control can maintain the media synchronization quality in chorus to a greater degree than when the control is not used.

Improving inter-destination synchronization in hierarchical reliable multicast

In hierarchical reliable multicast schemes, the number of repair proxies and their locations influence inter-destination synchronization. The inter-destination synchronization in multicast environments means the adjustment of the output timing among destinations over the Internet. Improving the inter-destination synchronization is beneficial to collaborative applications such as multi-conference system and multi-playing online game. In this paper, we propose a scheme to find the optimal locations of repair proxies that can improve inter-destination synchronization maximally in heterogeneous network environments. The simulation results show that if repair proxies are placed by the proposed scheme, delivery delay fairness of inter-destination can be improved by 0.05 maximally. In addition, we perform t-Test on the simulation results in order to verify that our optimal placement improves synchronization.
