Workplace injury prevention and wellness program for orchestra musicians: A randomised controlled trial

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of a workplace injury prevention and wellness program compared to no intervention (control) on musicians' playing-related musculoskeletal pain intensity. The hypothesis was that musicians who completed the program would have a greater reduction in pain intensity than the control group. DESIGN: Pragmatic parallel randomised controlled trial. METHODS: Sixty-five orchestra musicians were recruited and completed patient-reported outcome measures (primary outcome: pain intensity over 11 months, using the Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for Musicians; range 0-40, lower is better) at baseline, 14 weeks (T1) and 11 months (T2). Following baseline assessment, participants were randomly assigned to the intervention (n=33) or control (n=32) groups, stratified by instrument and pain prevalence. The intervention group received a 14-week injury prevention and wellness program including education and exercise; the control group received no intervention. RESULTS: Pain intensity means (standard deviation) were 7.8 (6.2), 8.0 (7.5), 8.6 (5.7) in the control group and 9.0 (6.6), 5.0 (4.2), 6.7 (6.6) in the intervention group at T0, T1 and T2, respectively. Using intention-to-treat analyses (three dropouts, n=65 analysed), between-group differences in pain intensity (95% confidence interval [CI]) were T1-T0: -4.2 (-7.5 to -0.9); T2-T0: -3.7 (-7.1 to -0.3), type III (overall) p=0.03, favouring the intervention group. No adverse events were reported. CONCLUSION: A workplace injury prevention and wellness program may have a clinically meaningful effect on reducing orchestra musicians' pain intensity.

Musculoskeletal pain intensity and perceptions during distance learning: A cross-sectional study.

Technological developments and the pandemic have popularized the distance learning model at universities. In this educational model, students spend more time in front of screens, and screen-related health conditions have become important. This cross-sectional study of 177 undergraduate students was designed to investigate the effect of block and traditional scheduling in online distance education (ODE) on their musculoskeletal pain and to investigate their perceptions of block scheduling. A two-stage method was used: a quantitative design to compare pain levels, and a qualitative design to determine the students' perceptions of block scheduling using an online survey. Pain intensity was assessed using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS-11). Data were collected in the university health sciences department. Pain intensity following the block and traditional lessons was analyzed using a paired t-test. Students in the block schedule had significantly more pain, with a large effect size on the whole trunk and upper limbs. Pain levels were also clinically meaningful for the upper (5.73 ± 2.75), lower (5.59 ± 2.87), and neck (4.92 ± 2.60) regions. Students reported positive experiences with block scheduling in ODE such as saving time (43%) and maintaining subject integrity (26%), but also negative experiences such as distraction (56%), fatigue (33%), pain (17%), and boredom (11%). Block scheduling in ODE could cause clinically significant neck and back pain. In distance learning, keeping the course duration short and ensuring student mobility in the classroom are important.

Questionnaire for Orchestra Musicians: Validation of the Online Version of the Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for Polish Musicians (MPIIQM-P).

Background: The only complete and validated tool for evaluating professional orchestra musicians is the English-language Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for professional orchestra Musicians (MPIIQM) questionnaire, which, in recent years, has been translated, adapted, and validated in other languages. The aim of the study was to validate the online version of the Polish version of the Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for Musicians (MPIIQM-P). Materials and Methods: The group included 182 professional musicians. The respondents were asked to complete the MPIIQM-P, BPI, and QuickDash questionnaires twice within an interval of 4 days. The questionnaires were created in the web form creator-Google Form. Results: The EFA analysis showed a two-factor structure of the questionnaire consisting of factor 1-pain intensity and factor 2-pain interference. The internal agreement of the factors identified in the EFA analysis was measured by the α Cronbach index reaching from 0.813 to 0.913. The intraclass correlation coefficient of both factors ranged from 0.276 to 0.583. The analysis of convergent and divergent validity between the subscales of the questionnaire value ranged from 0.414 to 0.925. Conclusions: The online version of the MPIIQM-P questionnaire is a valid and reliable tool for the assessment of musculoskeletal pain and interference. The online MPIIQM-P questionnaire maintains the psychometric properties previously defined for the paper version.

Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for Musicians-Italian Version (MPIIQM-IT): Multicenter Validation, Translation and Cultural Adaptation.

The study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and test the psychometric properties of the Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for Musicians (MPIIQM) in an Italian population of professional and amateur musicians. The translation and cultural adaptation process followed international guidelines, while the reliability and validity of the questionnaire were assessed against the COSMIN checklist. The internal consistency was calculated using Cronbach's alpha (a) coefficient. Construct validity was analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with principal axis factoring (PAF) extraction. The sample adequacy and data suitability were assessed through the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) and Bartlett's sphericity tests, respectively. Concurrent validity was analyzed by assessing Pearson's correlation coefficient with the Italian version of the Musculoskeletal Health Questionnaire (MSK-HQ-I). Finally, the cross-cultural validity was investigated by analyzing score differences between amateur and professional musicians, and differences based on musical practice habits. The tool was administered to 311 subjects recruited from across Italy. The MPIIQM-IT was found to have high levels of internal consistency for the entire tool and each of the two subscales (Cronbach's a = 0.875, 0.877, and 0.845, respectively). The recruited sample was found to be adequate (KMO = 0.810) and the data suitable (C2 = 341.040, p < 0.001) for factor analysis, which produced 9 items contained in two main factors. Pearson's correlation coefficients showed a positive, statistically significant correlation between the MSK-HQ-I and the two subscales of the MPIIQM-IT with p < 0.01. Analysis of Student's t-test for independent samples and the ANOVA test for continuous variables showed statistically significant differences between male and female, professional and non-professional musicians, and conservatory and non-conservatory students. The MPIIQM-IT is a valid and reliable tool, useful for investigating the presence of pain and playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs) in both professional and non-professional musicians.

Factors affecting the intensity of chronic musculoskeletal pain in patients with cardiovascular disease and evaluation of the efficacy of magnesium emulsion cream for muscle cramps.

Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aimed to determine the factors associated with the intensity of CMP in patients with underlying CVD and to evaluate the efficacy of Ice Power Magnesium In Strong Cream in patients with muscle cramps. We investigated 396 patients with or without CMP who visited an outpatient cardiology clinic and analyzed the features of CMP and factors associated with pain intensity and specific types of CVD in study 1. We also analyzed 73 patients who had muscle cramps in the lower extremities in study 2 to evaluate the efficacy of Ice Power Magnesium In Strong Cream in reducing pain intensity. In study 1, multivariable linear regression analysis showed that older age (regression coefficient [B] = 0.66, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.07-1.24), female sex (B = 1.18, 95% CI, 0.59-1.76), presence of hypertension (B = 0.69, 95% CI, 0.05-1.33), and use of calcium supplements (B = 1.27, 95% CI, 0.31-2.24) were significantly associated with a higher intensity of CMP. In study 2, the mean pain scores at baseline, week 2 and week 4 after treatment were 5.99 ± 2.12, 2.92 ± 2.63, and 1.90 ± 2.41, respectively, and the reductions were significant at both week 2 and week 4 after treatment (P < .05). Older age, female sex, hypertension, and use of calcium supplements were associated with an increased intensity of CMP. Ice Power Magnesium In Strong Cream was effective in reducing the pain intensity of muscle cramps in the lower extremities.

Hospital admission is associated with disability and late musculoskeletal pain in individuals with long COVID.

The acute clinical repercussions of SARS-CoV-2 infection have been widely studied. However, the possible late repercussions of long COVID have not yet been well defined in the literature. To identify the presence of pain and musculoskeletal disability in patients with Long COVID and also to identify predictive factors for pain intensity in this population. In this cross-sectional and retrospective observational study individuals with Long COVID symptoms were included. It was collected musculoskeletal disability measures, data from patient-related outcome measures and variables from a COVID-19 outpatient service database. Associations and sub-group analyses were performed considering the variables pain, disability and hospitalization. Linear regression was performed to identify predictive factors for pain intensity in Long COVID patients. We evaluated 195 patients and most of them (57%) presented musculoskeletal pain in one area of the body. Pain sub-group presented worse disability indices and worse clinical course during hospitalization. Hospitalized patients presented worse disability indices comparing to non-hospitalized. Significant correlations were found between pain and days of non-invasive oxygen support (r = 0.21; p = 0.003); days in intensive care unit (r = 0.22; p = 0.002) and days in invasive mechanical ventilation (r = 0.35; p = 0.001). Hospitalized individuals showed a higher chance of presenting late musculoskeletal pain (OR = 1.42: 95%CI 1.09-2.04). Days in intensive care unit (β = 0,234: P = 0,001) and days in invasive mechanical ventilation (β = 0.764: P = 0.001) were predictors of pain intensity [F(2,192) = 18.559; R2 = 0.231; p = 0.001]. Individuals with Long COVID presented musculoskeletal pain and disability. Hospitalized patients showed a greater chance of having musculoskeletal pain. Days in intensive care unit and days in invasive mechanical ventilation were predictors of late musculoskeletal pain intensity.

Influence of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Musculoskeletal Complaints and Psychological Well-Being of Employees in Public Services-A Cohort Study.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in unprecedented restrictions on public and private life. The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the physical and mental health of employees in the public sector, especially patient-related professions. For the data collection in summer 2021, an online questionnaire was used. Compared to a pre-pandemic point of time, the prevalence, frequency, and intensity of musculoskeletal pain, mental well-being, health status, and quality of life were recorded. The questionnaire was completed by 1678 employees (f: 1045, m: 617). A total of 1504 employees (89.6%) were affected by complaints. Compared to before the pandemic, the prevalence and intensity of musculoskeletal complaints and psychological distress increased significantly. Patient-related professions (n = 204) showed significantly higher levels of stress and discomfort in several aspects (p < 0.05). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an increase in musculoskeletal complaints and a decrease in psychological well-being. Preventive factors related to mental health were identified as male gender, a middle- to older-age group, employees with children, and working from home. Attention should be drawn to these findings and prevention strategies should be brought into focus to strengthen the employees' health. Special focus should be drawn to patient-related professions who are particularly confronted with pandemic-associated challenges.

Content and Quality of Mobile Apps for the Monitoring of Musculoskeletal or Neuropathic Pain in Australia: Systematic Evaluation.

Mobile apps offer a potential mechanism for people with persistent pain to monitor pain levels conveniently within their own environment and for clinicians to remotely monitor their patients' pain. However, the quality of currently available apps and the usefulness of included features from a clinical perspective are not known. The aim of this study was to examine the content and quality of currently available smartphone apps designed for monitoring the intensity or presence of musculoskeletal or neuropathic pain. A systematic search was performed in the Australian Apple and Google Play stores. Apps were included if they were designed to monitor the intensity or presence of musculoskeletal or neuropathic pain and were available in the English language within the Australian app stores. Data pertaining to the intended use of the app and clinical population were extracted by using a custom-designed data extraction form, and app quality was assessed by using the 23-item Mobile App Rating Scale. Of the 2190 apps screened, 49 met the inclusion criteria. Apps were primarily designed for adult users (36/49, 73%) with nonspecific musculoskeletal or neuropathic pain conditions, arthritis, and joint pain. All apps monitored pain intensity, with almost half (23/49, 47%) also specifying pain location. Overall, the mean quality scores from the Mobile App Rating Scale ranged from 1.5 to 4.4 (out of 5.0). Between 20% (10/49) and 22% (11/49) of apps involved clinicians, consumers, or both in their development, and 20% (10/49) had published literature related to the development or use of the app in clinical scenarios. Although 71% (35/49) had data sharing features, only 5 apps enabled client-clinician communication through the app. The overall quality of mobile apps that are currently available for monitoring pain intensity is acceptable. Presently, mobile apps for remote pain monitoring lack functionality for clinicians to view data between consults. Both users and clinicians should be aware of the limitations of these apps and make informed choices in using or recommending apps that best suit the clinical need.

Kinesiophobia and associated variables in patients with heart failure.

Patients with heart failure (HF) can exhibit kinesiophobia, an excessive, debilitating, and irrational fear of movement. This study aimed to enhance the understanding of kinesiophobia in patients with HF by analysing associations with the following variables: musculoskeletal pain, quality of life, quality of sleep, functional capacity, disability, frailty, sex, and age. In this cross-sectional study, 107 participants were included, with ages ranging from 28 to 97 years (57% men, mean age 73.18 ± 12.68 years). Multiple regression analyses were performed with all variables, including polynomial regressions for variables with a non-linear relationship. Kinesiophobia was significantly correlated (P < 0.01) with musculoskeletal pain, quality of life, quality of sleep, functional capacity, disability, and being at risk of frailty, while age and sex were not statistically significant. Frailty disability and musculoskeletal pain intensity were variables linearly associated with kinesiophobia, while quality of sleep and disability had a non-linear relationship with kinesiophobia. Kinesiophobia needs to be evaluated and better understood in patients with HF to improve physical activity and exercise adherence. This study found that musculoskeletal pain intensity, quality of sleep, disability, and frailty risk have a significant association with kinesiophobia in patients with HF. Our results suggest multi-dimensional associations of kinesiophobia in patients with HF, which require further examination and understanding.

Musculoskeletal pain intensity and risk of long-term sickness absence in the general working population: A prospective cohort study with register follow-up

Determining predictors of sickness absence could allow for better screening, guidance, and development of preventive efforts aimed at those in increased risk. This study aimed to determine the prospective association between musculoskeletal pain intensity and risk of incident register-based long-term sickness absence in the general working population, as well as to determine the population attributable fraction.Drawing on data from a nation-wide questionnaire survey, this prospective cohort study followed a representative sample of the Danish general working population without recent long-term sickness absence (≥6 consecutive weeks) (n = 69,273) for long-term sickness absence up to two years (mean follow-up: 93 weeks) in a national register. The predictor was musculoskeletal pain intensity in the neck/shoulder and low-back during the preceding three months rated on an 11-point numerical rating scale from 0 to 10.The weighted incidence of long-term sickness-absence was 8.9% during two-year follow-up (n = 6165). We observed a clear dose-response association between musculoskeletal pain intensity of the neck/shoulder or low-back and the risk of incident long-term sickness absence, with a lower threshold of increased risk of 4 and 3 (scale 0–10) for neck/shoulder (HR (95% CI): 1.25 (1.09–1.42)) and low-back pain (HR (95% CI): 1.13 (1.00–1.29)), respectively. Prevention of pain intensities at or above 4 out of 10 could potentially prevent 17% (population attributable fraction, PAF (95% CI): 16.8 (13.6–20.1)) of the total long-term sickness absence in the general working population. Large-scale interventions to prevent and manage musculoskeletal pain need to be documented and implemented.

French Version of the Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for Professional Orchestra Musicians (MPIIQM-F): Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Preliminary Validation.

The Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for Professional Orchestra Musicians (MPIIQM) is a prominent patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) in the musicians' health literature. It has been published in at least four languages, but not in French. To cross-culturally adapt the MPIIQM into French and establish the preliminary psychometric properties (validity, reliability, and responsiveness) of the MPIIQM-F. Standardized cross-cultural adaptation methods included forward translations, an expert committee, and verbal field tests in the target population. Psychometric properties were assessed in a population of French-speaking professional orchestra musicians who participated in three evaluation sessions. Evaluated properties include content, face, structural and construct validity, reliability (internal consistency, test-retest reliability, minimal detectable change [MDC], measurement error), and responsiveness (effect size and standardized response means [SRM]). Sixty-one French-speaking orchestra musicians participated in the psychometric validation. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor solution equivalent to previous versions, confirming the Pain Intensity and Interference subscales. Spearman correlations for construct validity were as hypothesized for four of six hypotheses (minor deviances for the other two hypotheses) using the Brief Pain Inventory, Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Performing Arts Module, and PROMIS Global Health Scale as comparators. Reliability results demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach's a=0.84-0.89), excellent test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.91-0.97), and small measurement error with MDC for the overall scale <10%. Responsiveness resulted in moderate to large effect sizes and SRM (0.54-0.87). Preliminary validation of the MPIIQM-F suggests good validity, reliability, and responsiveness, indicating its suitability for use in French-speaking orchestra musicians.

A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of Effectiveness of a Psychoeducational Intervention on the Management of Musculoskeletal Chronic Noncancer Pain

AimsTo investigate the effectiveness of a psychoeducational intervention on pain intensity management in musculoskeletal chronic noncancer pain and to identify relevant variables and preliminary data to allow the design of a randomized controlled trial. DesignTwo arms parallel randomized pilot study. Subjects and Setting: Adult patients with musculoskeletal chronic noncancer pain with moderate-severe intensity treated at Primary Health Centers. MethodsParticipants were randomly assigned to a psychoeducational intervention or a control group without intervention. Pain intensity, quality of life, and opioid use were assessed at baseline and at a 1-month follow-up. ResultsThe sample consisted of 37 adult patients (intervention group: 19; control group: 18). A significant reduction in pain intensity measured by the Verbal Numerical Rating Scale (p = .02, Cohen's d = 0.57) and improvement in quality of life measured by EuroQol-5D questionnaire (p = .04) were observed in the intervention group compared to the control. This improvement on pain intensity was greater in patients without strong opioid treatment (p = .01, Cohen's d = 1.36). Eighty percent of the strong opioids users in the intervention group reduced their consumption, without changes in the control group. ConclusionsThese findings provide promising support for the beneficial effects of psychoeducation on the intensity of noncancer chronic musculoskeletal pain. Based on the results, future randomized controlled trials are needed.

Musculoskeletal Pain in the Neck and Lower Back Regions among PHC Workers: Association between Workload, Mental Disorders, and Strategies to Manage Pain.

We aimed to identify the relationship between the presence and intensity of musculoskeletal pain in the neck and lumbar regions reported by Primary Health Care (PHC) workers with workloads and occupational risks, analyze musculoskeletal pain in the presence and absence of self-reported mental disorders based on a medical diagnosis, and identify workers' strategies to manage pain. This cross-sectional study addressed 338 health professionals working in PHC outpatient services in the extreme South of Brazil. One questionnaire addressed sociodemographic questions concerning occupation, occupational risks, and mental disorders. The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire was used to assess self-reported musculoskeletal pain. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) measured the workload. A descriptive and inferential analysis was performed using SPSS version 21.0. Most (55.3%) participants reported neck and (64.5%) lower back pain in the previous 12 months, and 22.5% and 30.5% reported intense neck and lower back pain, respectively, in the previous 12 months. The results showed different independent associations with increased musculoskeletal pain among health workers. Dentists presented the highest prevalence of neck pain, while female workers presented the highest prevalence of lower back pain. Furthermore, the perception of ergonomic risk and virtually all self-reported mental disorders (except panic syndrome for neck pain) were associated with pain in the neck and lower back regions and a higher frustration level (mental demand). Additionally, professionals with graduate degrees, nurses, and professionals working the longest in PHC services reported seeking complementary therapies more frequently, while physicians and those with self-reported mental disorders self-medicated more frequently.

The association between perceived stress and musculoskeletal pain during e-learning among health-profession students

Background and Aims: Musculoskeletal pain is among students’ most common complaints while learning. University students report high-stress levels, which is a risk factor for developing musculoskeletal problems. Shift¬ing from face-to-face learning to e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic may have increased college students’ time spent on computers. This increase may lead to musculoskeletal problems. This study aimed to assess the correlation between musculoskeletal pain, stress, and time spent on e-learn¬ing among female university students. Methods: Participants were recruited through an online survey examining demographic data, students’ attitudes, the ‘Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire’ and the ‘Perceived Stress Scale’. The survey was distributed, through university email lists and social media, to medical college students at Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University in Saudi Arabia. Results: Respondents’ musculoskeletal symptoms during the seven days previous to their responses were present at the neck (55%), lower back (48%), shoulders (43%), and upper back (34%). A positive, significant, weak correlation between musculoskeletal symptoms and total time spent on e-learning (p = 0.27, p &lt; 0.01) and stress (p = 0.3, p &lt; 0.01). Students with high-stress scores and negative attitudes toward e-learning had more musculoskeletal pain intensity. Conclusions: Respondents’ high prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms appears to be affected by the high stress levels associated with health-profession students’ time spent on e-learning. Students’ negative attitude toward e-learning correlates with both musculoskeletal pain and stress levels.

Is Exercise Rehabilitation an Effective Adjuvant to Clinical Treatment for Myofascial Trigger Points? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

To systematically evaluate the effect of exercise rehabilitation as an adjuvant to clinical treatment for myofascial trigger points (MTrPs). ESBCO, PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, China Knowledge Network (CNKI), and Wanfang databases were comprehensively searched from database inception date through July 2022. Randomized controlled trials comparing MTrPs treatments that included exercise rehabilitation with a single clinical treatment. Two researchers independently screened articles using inclusion/exclusion criteria, scored methodologic quality, and extracted data including patient demographics, interventions, and outcomes. We included 14 RCTs (N = 734). Results showed short-term (mean difference [MD], -2.25; 95% confidence interval [CI], -4.08 to -0.41; Z = 2.40; P = 0.02) and long-term (MD = -0.47; 95% CI: -0.80 to -0.17; Z = 3.05; P = 0.02) adjuvant exercise rehabilitation treatments were superior in reducing musculoskeletal pain intensity to single clinical treatment in controls, but long-term versus short-term effectiveness was not significantly different. The exercise rehabilitation group more effectively increased the range of motion (ROM) (standardized mean difference [SMD], 1.04; 95% CI: 0.32 to 1.77; Z = 2.84; P = 0.005) and decreased dysfunction (SMD = -0.93; 95% CI: -1.82 to -0.05; Z = 2.06; P = 0.04) than controls; no significant difference was observed in the pressure pain threshold (PPT) between two groups. Exercise rehabilitation as an adjuvant to clinical treatment for MTrPs was moderately effective in relieving pain intensity, increasing ROM, and improving dysfunction versus single clinical intervention. These findings must be validated by larger, higher-quality studies.

Association Between Sleep Quality, Musculoskeletal Pain and Physical and Psychosocial Well-Being Among Employees Working from Home

COVID-19 has perplexed the world into an unexpected state of affairs. With the implementation of nationwide lockdown, people have begun to ‘Work for Home’ in many employment sectors. Though the policy has managed to keep people safe from the devastating effects of the virus, it has, however, imposed most employees into a sedentary lifestyle. The current situation has resulted in disordered sleep, musculoskeletal pain, physical and psychosocial well-being decline due to irregular work hours, and mental health issues due to corona phobia. The current study aims to find the correlation between sleep duration, musculoskeletal pain, and physical and psychosocial well-being in employees working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. One hundred fifty-three samples from the North India region were studied in a correlation study. Subjects working from home for at least one month or more and only due to COVID-19 lockdown were excluded, while those with any musculoskeletal, cardiovascular or neurological disorder were excluded. Questionnaires employed were Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) (for sleep quality), Chronic Pain Grade Questionnaire (CPGQ) (for pain intensity), and Short Form-12 (SF-12) Questionnaire (for physical and psychosocial well-being). Scores were calculated, and Pearson’s correlation was found. One hundred fifty-three samples (mean age= 32.73±5.55, mean height=167±9.22, mean weight=67.2±13.7, mean BMI=23.9±3.97) were evaluated, which revealed a higher negative correlation coefficient value between MSK pain intensity and PCS value (-0.535) describing that the pain increased with deterioration in sleep, and sleep quality and MCS value (-0.423) stating that the psychosocial well-being worsened with the decline in sleep quality; while a highly positive correlation was established with the sleep quality and pain intensity scores (0.420) depicting that pain degraded the physical well-being. A weak correlation was reported in the relationship between the intensity of MSK pain with sleep quality (-0.218) and PCS score (-0.323), suggesting no significant impact (significant at the 0.01 level (2-tailed). A significant correlation has been established between sleep quality, the intensity of musculoskeletal pain, and the physical and psychosocial well-being of employees working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

The potential association of musculoskeletal pain with presenteeism and work engagement among intensive care unit nurses: a cross-sectional study

Aim: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders and associated musculoskeletal pain among intensive care nurses are important, as these factors may be related to presenteeism and work engagement. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential association of musculoskeletal pain with presenteeism and work engagement among intensive care nurses. &#x0D; Material and Method: This descriptive study was carried out with members of the Turkish Society of Critical Care Nurses. All the participants completed a questionnaire, which included questions about general demographic data and occupational musculoskeletal exposures (Occupational Safety and Health Administration [OSHA] Ergonomic Assessment Checklist). To measure pain, work engagement and presenteeism, the following instruments were used: The Brief Pain Inventory Short Form (BPI SF), Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-17) and Stanford Presenteeism Scale-6 (SPS-6). This study was performed in 2021, and the questionnaire was distributed via email to the database of Turkish Society of Critical Care Nurses. &#x0D; Results: Our study was completed with 153 intensive care unit nurses. Among the study population, 76.5% (n=117) of the nurses had chronic musculoskeletal pain, 80% of whom had exposure to lifting heavy weights. There was a weak negative correlation between pain and work engagement, as shown by the BPI SF pain interference subscale and the vigour subscale of the UWES-17 (p=0.04, r=-.166). There was also a weak negative correlation between pain and presenteeism according to the BPI SF pain interference subscale and SPS-6 (p=0.04, r=-.193). There was no statistically significant association between workplace ergonomic exposures, presenteeism, work engagement and the presence of chronic musculoskeletal pain. &#x0D; Conclusion: Neither chronic musculoskeletal system pain nor pain intensity was significantly correlated with work engagement, occupational musculoskeletal exposures or presenteeism. However, musculoskeletal pain-related effects on daily activities of living had a negative impact on work engagement (vigour) and presenteeism.

Validity and reliability of the Musicians' Health Literacy Questionnaire, MHL-Q19.

High prevalence of musicians’ physical and mental performance-related health issues (PRHI) has been demonstrated over the last 30 years. To address this, health promotion strategies have been implemented at some post-secondary music institutions around the world, yet the high prevalence of PRHI has persisted. In 2018, an international group of researchers formed the Musicians’ Health Literacy Consortium to determine how best to decrease PRHI, and to examine the relationship between PRHI and health literacy. An outcome of the Consortium was the development of a new health literacy tool for musicians, the MHL-Q19, which drew from the theoretical framework of the European health literacy suite of tools, HLS-EU. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of the MHL-Q19. Participants completed a battery of questionnaires, including the HLS-EU-Q16 for the assessment of general health literacy; the Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for Musicians (MPIIQM); the RAND-12 quality of life questionnaire; and the General Self-Efficacy scale (GSE). We hypothesized that the MHL-Q19 would have a weak correlation with the HLS-EU-Q16; moderate correlation with the physical component scale and weak correlation with the mental component scale of the RAND-12; moderate correlation with the GSE; and finally, moderate correlation with pain interference and weak correlation with pain intensity of the MPIIQM. A total of 549 post-secondary music students from six English-speaking countries completed the battery of questionnaires, and 328 of these participants provided valid responses to the MHL-Q19 alone 2 weeks later. The tool showed acceptable internal consistency and test–retest reliability. Three of our hypotheses were supported, although the strength of the correlations varied from what we had predicted. The fourth hypothesis was not supported; our findings indicate that lower health literacy scores were weakly related to higher MPIIQM pain intensity and interference scores. The results of this study support the notion that musicians’ health literacy is a distinct construct that cannot be fully evaluated with existing health literacy tools. Given that this is a new instrument, the evidence presented is positive and promising. Further studies will be needed to refine the tool.
