Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from the cattle sector: Land‐use regulation as an alternative to emissions pricing

AbstractReducing animal‐based food production would not only reduce agricultural greenhouse gas emissions but also free land that could sequester carbon. We examine the efficiency of a subsidy to cattle farmers for setting aside land for natural ecosystem regeneration. We develop a partial equilibrium model of the cattle sector that integrates land use, greenhouse gas emissions, and animal feeding. We compare the subsidy to alternative policies: a meat tax and a standard on animal feeding. We identify the conditions under which the subsidy is the best alternative to these other second‐best policies. The efficiency of the subsidy lies in its effects on both the extensive margin (reduced quantity of meat) and the intensive margin (production intensification, which reduces both the emission and land‐use intensities of meat). An empirical application to France, where spontaneous regeneration corresponds mostly to forest regrowth, shows that the subsidy dominates the other alternative policies considered for a wide range of parameter values but is sensitive to carbon leakage when the economy is open to trade.

Optimised stress – intensification of pyocyanin production with zinc oxide nanoparticles

BackgroundPyocyanin is a blue pigment produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Due to its unique redox properties over the last decade, it has gained more and more interest as a utile chemical. Nevertheless, it remains a rather costly reagent. It was previously shown that the production of pyocyanin can be enhanced by employing various methods. Among them are using statistical methods for planning the experiments or exposing bacterial cultures to stressors such as nanoparticles dosed in sublethal concentrations, e.g. zinc oxide nanoparticles.ResultsThe Design of Experiment (DoE) methodology allowed for calculating the optimal process temperature and nanoparticle concentration to intensify pyocyanin production. Low concentrations of the nanoparticles (6.06 µg/mL) and a temperature of 32℃ enhanced pyocyanin production, whereas higher concentrations of nanoparticles (275.75 µg/mL) and higher temperature stimulated biomass production and caused the abolishment of pyocyanin production. Elevated pigment production in zinc oxide nanoparticles-supplemented media was sustained in the scaled-up culture. Conducted analyses confirmed that observed stimulation of pyocyanin production is followed by higher membrane potential, altered gene expression, generation of reactive oxygen species, and accumulation of zinc in the cell’s biomass.ConclusionsPyocyanin production can be steered using ZnO nanoparticles. Elevated production of pyocyanin due to exposure to nanoparticles is followed by the number of changes in physiology of bacteria and is a result of the cellular stress. We showed that the stress response of bacteria can be optimised using statistical methods and result in producing the desired metabolite more effectively.

A novel high-throughput qPCR chip for solving co-infections in RAS farmed rainbow trout

Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) have become more attractive due to reduced water consumption and effluent discharge. However, intensification of production increases the risk of introducing pathogens at farming sites. The emergence of uncultivable pathogens and RAS pathobiome diversity shifts the traditional disease paradigm from “one pathogen, one disease” to complex multiple-pathogen disease cases. Piscine orthoreovirus genotype 3 (PRV-3) is an excellent example, as it is capable of inducing anemia and heart pathology resembling heart and skeletal muscle inflammation under experimental conditions, and is associated with increased mortality in association with other pathogens in the field. The aim of this study was to develop a method for detection of multiple pathogens and putative pathogens, as co-infections are common in aquaculture. To do this, in the pilot study, we mapped the pathobiome of RAS-farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) (commercial RAS, farm A) using both standard diagnostic methods and metabarcording (16S rRNA) to investigate the gill microbiome. During this study, we observed infections with multiple pathogens, and detected two putative gill pathogens Candidatus Branchiomonas cysticola and Candidatus Piscichlamydia salmonis, both of which have been linked with complex gill disease in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Based on the pilot study, we developed and tested a high throughput qPCR (HT-qPCR) chip targeting 22 viral and bacterial pathogens and putative pathogens, followed by a surveillance of a fish cohort in a commercial RAS farm during production (farm B). Co-infection with PRV-3 and Ca. B. cysticola combined with stress inducing management practices may explain the severe disease outbreak observed (37% mortality). The time course study sets the base for a future screening scheme for disease prediction and addresses limitations of the method when testing environmental DNA/RNA.

Fertilization Type Differentially Affects Barley Grain Yield and Nutrient Content, Soil and Microbial Properties.

The use of artificial fertilizers follows the intensification of agricultural production as a consequence of population growth, which leads to soil depletion, loss of organic matter, and pollution of the environment and production. This can be overcome by increasing the use of organic fertilizers in agriculture. In the present study, we investigated the effect of using vermicompost, biochar, mineral fertilizer, a combination of vermicompost and mineral fertilizer, and an untreated control on alluvial-meadow soil on the development of fodder winter barley Hordeum vulgare L., Zemela cultivar. We used a randomized complete block design of four replications per treatment. Barley grain yield, number of plants, and soil and microbiological parameters were studied. We found statistically proven highest grain yield and grain protein values when applying vermicompost alone, followed by the combined treatment and mineral fertilizer. The total organic carbon was increased by 70.2% in the case of vermicompost and by 44% in the case of combined treatment, both compared to the control. Thus, soil microbiome activity and enzyme activities were higher in vermicompost treatment, where the activity of β-glucosidase was 29.4% higher in respect to the control, 37.5% to the mineral fertilizer, and 24.5% to the combined treatments. In conclusion, our study found the best overall performance of vermicompost compared to the rest of the soil amendments.

Scientific principles, factors and peculiarities of intensification in agricultural production

The theoretical and methodological foundations of intensification and the practice of efficient agricultural production in the context of continuity of provisions of the concept of sustainable development of the industry are studied. The features and significance of intensification are revealed, attention is paid to the issues of organic production, implementation of the principles of green economy policy and the processes of ecologization, land reclamation, investment, construction and reconstruction of agricultural facilities.

Rapid land cover change in agricultural valleys of the Atacama Desert, Chile

The profound landscape modification produced by agriculture is considered one of the main threats to biodiversity worldwide. Although the main ecological impacts are likely due to agricultural expansion into natural areas, changes in crop types and production intensification also induce significant ecological changes. We studied the land cover change process in four agricultural valleys (Lluta, Azapa, Vítor and Camarones) in the Atacama Desert of Chile between 2003 and 2019, divided into four equal periods. Using spatial data and logistic regression, we assessed the driving factors of land cover change. The Azapa valley showed the highest rate of land cover change, reaching 36.4% of netting and greenhouses landscape cover by the end of the study, and 50.4% annual rate of increase during the 2007–2011 period. Intensification was observed as the anti-aphid netting cover expanded mainly in Azapa and in the last four years in Vítor and Lluta valleys. Most land cover change was related to low slopes and elevation or sites closer to roads or surrounded by already cultivated land, like agriculture expansion on barren soil or native shrubland loss. High population density was significantly correlated with land cover change (p < 0.01). If land cover change into netting continues as observed, it is possible that landscape homogenization occurs in the short term in almost all valleys. Anyway, disentangling how landscape change works and the involved drivers, could be useful to understand landscape simplification in arid lands that are under an agricultural intensification process.

Current status of pistachio diseases in countries of the Mediterranean Basin

AbstractIn the Mediterranean Basin, the pistachio crop is considered an emerging nut crop due to the dependence of the European nut markets on international imports. Consequently, the extension and intensification of pistachio production to nontraditional growing areas has promoted both classic and emerging diseases of this nut tree, which are limiting factors in crop production. Due to the limited interest in pistachio crops, the aetiology and epidemiology of the main pistachio diseases are poorly studied. Thus, this review summarizes the state of pistachio disease research, with particular attention given to the Mediterranean area. The information reported here is based not only on the literature, but also the advancement of our research on pistachio diseases conducted in both Italy and Spain. We describe the main fungal diseases of the tree canopy in Mediterranean countries, such as Botryosphaeria panicle and shoot blight, Septoria leaf spot, and stem, branch and trunk canker diseases, followed by the main soilborne diseases. In addition, we review minor and/or sporadic fungal diseases originating in not only the Mediterranean, but also other pistachio‐producing countries. Another section is dedicated to other diseases caused by bacteria, phytoplasmas, viruses and nematodes. Finally, we summarize the main control strategies adopted in Mediterranean Basin countries against pistachio diseases.

Host genetic resistance in Brassica napus: a valuable tool for the integrated management of the fungal pathogen Leptosphaeria maculans.

Management of plant disease in agro-ecosystems ideally relies on a combination of host genetic resistance, chemical control and cultural practices. Growers increasingly rely on chemical and genetic options but their relative benefits in disease control, yield and economic outcomes are rarely quantified. We explore this relationship for blackleg crown canker disease (caused by Leptosphaeria maculans), a major biotic constraint limiting canola production globally. Data from 20 field trials conducted from 2013 to 2015 in canola-growing regions of Australia were used to assess the effects of host resistance and fungicide treatment on blackleg severity, grain yield and gross margin. In the absence of fungicide, blackleg disease was 88% lower in the most resistant compared to the most susceptible blackleg resistance category. In the most susceptible resistance category, the most effective fungicide treatment significantly reduced blackleg severity (from 50% to 6%), and increased grain yield (478kg/ha, 41%) and gross margin (AU$120/ha, 17%). However, the mean benefits of fungicide tended to decrease with increasing levels of genetic resistance, to the point that yield, disease and gross margin benefits were close to zero in the most resistant cultivars. Overall, these findings suggest that fungicides can reduce blackleg severity, but the benefits of application strongly depend on associated levels of genetic resistance. Canola cultivars with higher genetic resistance reliably reduced blackleg disease and maintained grain yield without the associated cost of fungicide application. The intensification of canola production to meet increasing global demand will require strategies to sustainably manage and protect finite genetic resistance resources to control blackleg disease.

Development of technology for intensification of oil production using emulsion based on natural gasoline and solutions of nitrite compounds

This article focuses on the issue of enhancing oil production by eliminating asphalt, resin, and paraffin deposits (ARPD). These deposits pose significant challenges, including equipment clogging, reduced well productivity, and increased maintenance costs. Moreover, paraffin deposits can damage well equipment, cause accidents, and halt hydrocarbon production. The study involved laboratory and field experiments at the Uzen field to evaluate the efficiency of removing and dissolving paraffin using an emulsion composed of gas gasoline and nitrite compound solutions. Previous studies conducted at NGDU Uzenneft were critically analyzed for comparison. The scientific innovation of this research lies in the development of an emulsion based on gas gasoline and nitrite compound solutions to remove ARPD. The composition was designed to exclude highly aggressive components. It utilized a previously developed emulsion base and incorporated ammonium nitrite, slightly acidified with hydrogen chloride (0.1% by mass), to promote an exothermic reaction.The effectiveness of this technology was measured by changes in daily oil production rates, the duration of the treatment's effect, and changes in the well productivity coefficient before and after treatment.Results indicate that the developed technology successfully removed paraffin from the bottomhole zone of oil wells and increased oil production in 5 out of 6 wells at the Uzen field. The positive effect lasted 17-27 days, with oil inflow increasing by 17-174%. This led to a total additional oil production of 1528 tons from the five wells. Land Suitability Evaluation of Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) Production Areas in Davao City, Philippines

With the growing demand for cocoa, local farmers and other key players of the cocoa industry were encouraged to boost production to secure supply. However, after many decades of cocoa production, soil fertility and available cultivation areas are shrinking. Land suitability evaluation was conducted in areas grown with cocoa in Davao City, Philippines to determine the current suitability and soil-related constraints for cocoa production intensification and expansion. Using the environmental lapse rate, temperature of the area was determined and suitability were evaluated using Food and Agriculture Organization framework with the aid of QGIS software. Based on the result, six soil series were identified as suitable for cocoa. These included the Cabantian, Bolinao (Inayangan), Bolinao (Paquibato), Miral, Tugbok and undifferentiated soil. Cabantian, Miral and Bolinao (Inayangan) were moderately suitable with limitations in slope and soil fertility. Bolinao (Paquibato) was moderately suitable with limitations in soil depth and sloping topography. Tugbok was marginally suitable due to low soil fertility and slight limitation in slope. Undifferentiated soil was moderately suitable with sloping topography, shallow depth and soil fertility constraints. The six suitable soil series had moderate to marginal limitations. The constraints to cocoa production are manageable to some extent.

Biological, physiological and economic characteristics of Onobrychis chorasanica Bunge ex Bois. (Sainfoin) under sowing conditions

Onobrychis chorasanica Bunge ex Bois. (Sainfoin) is a valuable pasture plant that is resistant to drought, produces high biomass and is not inferior to alfalfa in terms of nutrient content. It is urgent to research the possibilities of cultivation of this plant for the purpose of growing hay in hilly conditions. The presence of nitrogen-fixing Rhizobium bacteria in the roots of plants is important in increasing the fertility of desert soils and this feature increases its role in the creation of artificial grasslands in hilly conditions. In the experiments, it was shown that it is possible to reach 100 % germination by mechanical scarification of the seeds isolated from O. chorasanica pods using sandpaper. Germination of unscarred seeds in field conditions depends on the year and the depth of planting them in the soil. In a dry year, the highest fertility was observed to be 13.3-15.0 % in the options where the seeds were buried at a depth of 3-4 cm, and in years with abundant rainfall, this indicator was 35.3 % in the option where the seeds were buried at a depth of 3 cm. The viability of lawns in the 2nd year of life was 72-95 % in different options. Hay productivity of O. chorasanica was found to be 41 centners per ha in hilly conditions and seed yield was up to 250 kg. The results obtained in the research are promising for the intensification of feed production of O. chorasanica in local conditions. The obtained results serve to increase the biomass yield of pasture plants and the variety of used feeds in farms specializing in animal husbandry.

Sustainable intensification of smallholder maize production in northern Ghana: The case of cowpea living mulch technology

AbstractSeveral agricultural technologies have been promoted to intensify smallholder farming systems in Ghana, but there is limited literature on sustainability assessment of these technologies. A 2‐year (2017–2018) on‐farm study was conducted to evaluate the sustainability of using cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] living mulch (CPLM) technology to intensify smallholder maize (Zea mays L.) production in northern Ghana. Four treatments (control, CPLM planted with maize on the same day, CPLM planted 1 week after maize, and CPLM planted 2 weeks after maize) were laid in RCBD with four replications per treatment. We used Sustainable Intensification Assessment Framework (SIAF) to assess the sustainability of the above treatments based on five domains (productivity, economic, environment, human, and social). We conducted the assessment in the following three steps: (1) measured selected indicators from the five SIAF domains, which were useful to answering research question; (2) converted measured values of the indicators into scores using a scale of 0–1; and (3) calculated sustainability index using geometric rules considering each SIAF domain as an edge of a pentagon. The sustainability indices for the CPLM increased by 143%–300% compared with the control treatment. The sustainability indices for the CPLM were &gt;1, indicating better sustainability relative to the control treatment, which recorded sustainability index of &lt;1. This suggests that smallholder farmers in northern Ghana and similar agroecologies can intercrop cowpea 1–2 weeks after planting maize as living mulch for better sustainability of their maize production and well‐being through its effect on yield, income, food security, nutrition, and gender equity.

Magnesium in Soils of Agricultural Landscapes of Western Siberia

Background: Western Siberia has great potential for crop and livestock production; it is limited by degradation of soil fertility due to depletion of biophilic elements, including Mg. Intensification of agricultural production requires monitoring and optimization of magnesium nutrition of field crops. This study aimed at investigating changes in content of magnesium forms Gleyic Chernozems and Luvic Greyzemic Phaeozem in the Western Siberia during their long-term agricultural use. Methods: Soil samples were taken from the fields of long-term experiments in 1978, 1988 and 2019. Three cores were taken from a soil layer 0-20, 20-40 cm thick and combined into composite samples. Composite samples were kept in the archives of the institute. Chemical analysis of composite soil samples was carried out in 2020. Chemical analyzes of soil and plants were carried out by conventional methods. Magnesium forms were extracted: easily exchangeable with 0.0025 M CaCl2 solution, exchangeable with 1 M CH3COONH4, non-exchangeable with 1 M HNO3 and determined on an atomic absorption spectrometer. Result: Systematic use of the ammonia form of nitrogen fertilizers (60-120 kg a.m./ha per year) led to a decrease in mobile forms of magnesium in the most root-inhabited soil layer. The removal of magnesium by potatoes was small (8-10 kg/ha, 80 % falls on the tops). Consequently, a significant decrease in the reserves of magnesium available to plants in soils is associated not so much with the alienation of the element with yield, but with leaching processes due to the displacement of magnesium from the soil-absorbing complex by ammonium ions introduced with fertilizers and also, probably, potassium.

Farmers’ perceptions and management of citrus fungal diseases in Benin

Background and aimCitrus production represents an important activity for the national economy and a source of income for farmers in Benin. However, fungal diseases are a major constraint to production intensification. The aim of this study is to assess farmers’ perceptions on citrus fungal diseases in production areas in Benin. MethodsA survey was conducted among 417 farmers between July and December 2021 in four major citrus-producing agro-ecological zones (zones V, VI, VII and VIII) to collect their perceptions, knowledge and management practices of citrus fungal diseases. ResultsFarmers reported that fungal diseases are one of the main constraints to citrus production, including black spot, anthracnose, brown rot, sooty mold and fruit rot. Among them, black spot disease is the most severe, causing damage to production. According to farmers, symptoms appear on fruit after fruit set, with a very remarkable presence and high incidence at maturity. Although farmers are most of times aware of the damage caused by fungal diseases with adverse consequences on their income, they have a poor knowledge of appropriate phytosanitary products to manage these diseases. Indeed, the majority of farmers (>60 %) use chemical insecticides, which they reported to be ineffective against citrus fungal diseases. Although chemical insecticides are their only recourse, almost 40 % use nothing to control these diseases. Farmers stated that climatic variability is a factor favoring the development of diseases, leading to reduced production. ConclusionsAmong the several citrus fungal diseases, black spot is perceived as the most damaging, causing greater yield losses under favorable conditions, coupled with an almost total absence of appropriate control methods. This study contributes to the reorganization of the citrus industry and to decision-making on capacity building for farmers in terms of orchard pest protection, in order to guarantee better production of marketable and exportable fruit.

Does pluralistic agricultural advisory service delivery enhance sustainable land management? Evidence from southwestern Uganda

Declining land productivity and increasing land and food scarcity, amidst high population growth have precipitated the need for intensification of crop production. Sustainable land management technologies (SLMTs) have been suggested as a way to support the intensification process. In Uganda, agricultural advisory services (AAS) geared towards improved adoption of the SLMTs are provided, and farmers can access AAS from diverse sources, with the possibility of accessing from single or multiple sources. This study attempts to identify and prioritize the drivers of farmers’ access to (single/multiple) sources of AAS and determine the impact of access to these sources of AAS on the adoption of SLMT, and crop productivity. The study uses cross-sectional data collected from 435 households in the southwestern highlands of Uganda, in Kisoro and Kabale districts. The multinomial endogenous switching regression model combined with an endogenous switching regression model was used to analyse the data. Results indicate that both single and multiple sources of AAS have a positive effect on adoption of SLMTs and crop productivity, with the latter having a positive effect on the adoption of more SLMTs, while it seems to reduce the adoption of some other SLMTs. Similarly, accessing AAS from multiple sources has a higher positive impact on crop productivity, when compared to no access, but a lower impact when compared to access to a single source of AAS. These results suggest that access to multiple sources of AAS has positive impacts, but there are possible inherent challenges in the way it is implemented; lack of synchronisation of the messages given to the farmers, and the top-down approaches used to disseminate knowledge on SLMTs by some of the AAS providers may confound the possibly higher benefits of access to multiple sources of AAS. This study points out the need for policy to consider the advantages of having a streamlined agricultural extension system, with coordinated efforts from all agricultural advisory service providers and stakeholders. Control system of the electric drive of a robot with a dc motor

Problem. Robotics and flexible production systems are the most important technical basis for the intensification of production. The use of robotic systems is expanding every year. This paper considers a two-circuit servo control system using the example of a DC motor current and speed control system and examines the functional diagram of the third circuit, a digital angle control system. Using the Matlab + SIMULINK software package, the servo drive and the digital system for controlling the angular position of the robot manipulator were modelled. Goal. As a result of the analysis, the purpose of the study was highlighted: the development of a digital system for adjusting the angular position of the manipulator, improve the quality of its positioning. Tasks: to study work management systems; to study the drives of robots; to get a mathematical model of an electric motor; to develop a machine diagram of a digital electric drive; to synthesize a three-loop robot positioning control system. Methodology. The research problems should be solved by methods of analysis and synthesis of automatic control systems. Results. In the work, a three-circuit control system of the electric drive of a robot with a direct current motor was developed. Thus, as a result of modeling the operation of a digital electric drive with three control circuits for current, speed and positioning, an aperiodic transient process was provided with quality indicators. Originality. Thus, the results of simulation of the two-loop servo control system showed that the dynamic characteristics of the electric motor in terms of current and speed of rotation, which meet the requirements of the task, are provided by the PI controller in the current control circuit and the PID controller in the speed control circuit. Thus, as a result of modeling the operation of a digital electric drive with three control circuits for current, speed and positioning, an aperiodic transient process was provided with quality indicators. Practical value. The following results were obtained during the research: the best control law for the current circuit is the proportional-integral (PI) law; the best control law for the speed contour is the proportional-integral-differential (PID) law; the best control law for a digital positioning control loop is the proportional (P) law.

Directions for increasing the efficiency of fodder production in agricultural organizations of Belarus

The main directions of fodder production development according to the state agrarian policy are determined. The dependence between fodder supply and the number of animals is revealed. The level of forage production intensification is determined taking into account the volume of organic and mineral fertilizers application for fodder crops and the amount of machinery in agricultural organizations. The significance of cultivation of high-protein crops as a promising direction of increasing the efficiency of fodder production is substantiated.

Mangrove sediments-associated bacterium (Bacillus sp. SW7) with multiple plant growth-promoting traits promotes the growth of tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum)

Global food production intensification presents a major hurdle to ensuring food security amidst a growing world population. Widespread use of chemical fertilizers in recent decades has risked soil fertility, compounded by the challenges posed by climate change, particularly in arid regions. To address these issues, adopting plant growth-promoting (PGP) bacteria stands out as a promising solution, offering multifaceted benefits to arid agroecosystems. We isolated a bacterial strain, SW7, from mangrove sediment, characterised the entire genome followed by phylogenetic analyses, and evaluated its in-vitro PGP activity. Subsequently, we examined its impact on tomato seed germination and plant growth. The strain SW7 exhibited growth on 11% NaCl, survival at 50°C, and possessed multiple PGP traits such as significant increase in seed germination rate (60.60 ± 38.85%), phosphate (83.3 g L−1) and potassium (39.6 g L−1) solubilization and produced indole acetic acid (3.60 ppm). Additionally, strain SW7 tested positive for ammonia, catalase, and oxidase enzyme production. The strain SW7 genome consists of 5.1 MB with 35.18% G+C content. Through genome-based phylogenetic and orthoANI analyses, the strain was identified as a novel Bacillus species, designated herein as Bacillus sp. SW7. In an eight-week shade-house experiment, inoculation of strain SW7 improved, leaf number, leaf density, leaf area index and mass water of tomatoes. Additional parameters, like chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoids were not affected in SW7-inoculated tomatoes. In conclusion, Bacillus sp. SW7 exhibits multiple PGP traits and an adaptive capacity to high temperature and salinity, positioning it as a potential candidate for elevating the productivity of arid agroecosystems.

Impact of contract farming on green technological efficiency of farmers: a comparative study of two contract organizational models

IntroductionEngaging in contract farming represents a crucial avenue for developing countries to integrate small farmers into modern agricultural practices. Existing research believes that contract farming offers a promising opportunity for fostering sustainable agricultural development. However, insufficient attention has been directed toward investigating the varying impacts of different organizational models within contract farming on farmers' transition to green production practices.MethodsThis study investigates the impact of contract farming on green technological efficiency of farmers using survey data from 719 wheat growers in Shandong Province, China. The propensity score matching method and multiple mediation effects models are employed for empirical analysis.ResultsThe organizational model plays a pivotal role in determining whether participation in contract farming can improve the green technological efficiency of farmers. Participation in an integrated model demonstrates a significant effect on improving green technological efficiency, whereas participation in a quasi-integrated model does not show a significant improvement. Integrated contract farming can improve green technological efficiency through expanding the degree of land consolidation and enhancing the level of productive service, whereas quasi-integrated contract farming improves green technological efficiency only by enhancing production intensification. As an economic incentive measure, the effect of contract purchase price on strengthening the enhancement of green technological efficiency in the quasi-integrated model is moderate only when the contract purchase price exceeds the local average selling price of wheat by more than 19.3%. Conversely, the moderate effect of farmers' dividend income in the integrated model remains consistent, with higher dividend incomes correlating with a stronger moderating effect.DiscussionThe impact of contract farming on green technology efficiency correlates significantly with the organizational model. Compared with the quasi-integrated contract farming model, the integrated model distinctly excels in advancing farmers' green technology efficiency, evidenced by its ability to consolidate fragmented land, provide productive services, and offer economic incentives. Therefore, to unlock the latent potential of contract farming in driving agricultural green transformation, a shift toward organizational models with higher levels of integration is essential.

Global challenges and the ‘farm to fork’ strategies of the European Green Deal: Blessing or curse

AbstractThe article evaluates how well the goals of the European Green Deal are justified, especially considering the risks to energy and food security arising from the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. We agree with the objectives of the European Green Agreement as a whole, but whether some of the objectives which feature in the EASAC study can be achieved by 2030 is questionable, and the description of the tools necessary to achieve the objectives is incomplete. Among other things, there is hardly any mention of the role played by precision farming with digitalization, which is a revolutionary change from an ecological and economic point of view, in reducing the use of synthetic inputs, in regenerating the original state of the soil, in reducing GHG emissions, thus in increasing biodiversity, and at the same time in intensifying production, and finally in expanding the application of biotechnology. We examine these areas in our analysis. Some of the objectives of the EASAC study to be achieved by 2030 are subject to debate, and the description of the information and communication conditions necessary to achieve the objectives is incomplete. The IoT (Internet of Things) responds to global and local challenges: it integrates the precision technologies, WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks), artificial intelligence, mobile field (Smart Small Robots) and remote data loggers (UAVs: Unmanned Air Vehicles and satellites), Big Data, and cloud computing. Consequently, decision support is increasingly developing into unmanned decision making. IoT (Internet of Things) is the basis of “Farm to Fork” and “Lab to Field” monitoring approaches.This article evaluates the implementation of European Green Agreement objectives in light of energy and food security risks arising from the Russia-Ukraine conflict. While overall support for the agreement exists, the feasibility of certain EASAC study objectives by 2030 is called into question due to insufficient tools specifications. Notably absent is the emphasis on precision farming with digitalization, which is a transformative ecological and economic practice. Our analyses look into its function in reducing synthetic inputs, soil regeneration, GHG emission reduction, biodiversity enhancement, production intensification, and biotechnology development. Debates surround EASAC study objectives for 2030, despite limited information and communication restrictions. The Internet of Things (IoT) arises as a solution, combining precision technology, WSNs (wireless sensor networks), AI (artificial intelligence), smart small robots, UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), satellites, big data, and cloud computing. As a result, decision support turns toward unmanned decision-making, with IoT laying the groundwork for “Farm to Fork” and “Lab to Field” monitoring systems.
