Systematic design an intelligent simulation training system: from learn-memorize perspective

Intelligent manufacturing provides a wide range of benefits such as optimizing production system via the behavioral instructions of cyber-physical system (CPS). Yet successful intelligent manufacturing is confronted with various challenges, such as executing specific behaviors in right way and right time. The current research aims to prevent intelligent manufacturing from being affected by human factors. To this end, an innovative learn-memorize matrix model is proposed and the platform of “Ball Reposition” logic flow with “Machine 2C” in “Wire Bond process” (WB_2C_M1 Process) in IC assembly is applied for talent training. As revealed by experiment findings, although seniority does not impact the execution frequency of “decomposition of movements” in simulation learning, it does impact the operation duration of “full process” for learning this logic process, and the execution frequency of “decomposition of movements” impacts the operation duration of “full process” in low-seniority group. Moreover, for learners’ learning processes, individual customized follow-up learning programs can be offered based on control-charts evaluation and knowledge evaluation matrix. With the intelligent simulation training system, it helps to cultivate professional technicians in intelligent manufacturing.

Managing and interpreting student actions in an intelligent simulation training system

The main objective of the ISTS project is to develop a simulation-based training system that conducts content training without the human instructor being continuously involved. A prototype for Air Traffic Control (ATC) has been developed by isolating the domain dependent expertise from the generic system. The prototype is modularized to be easily modified, expanded, or adapted to other domains. In order to evaluate a student's performance, a simulation-based training system must be able to accurately interpret student actions. This paper will present a generic paradigm for managing and interpreting the effects of student inputs for an Intelligent Simulation Training System (ISTS). The Control module is the manager of the ISTS. It is responsible for coordinating the communication between the simulation and the rest of the system. It is also responsible for deciding when and which modules to activate based on a set of prioritized facts. The Interpreter module determines the effects of the student input to the simulation by comparing snapshots of the simulation before and after a student input is executed. It also checks the simulation for late events.

Inter/intra process communications in ISTS

The complexity of maintaining a generic and flexible Intelligent Simulation-Based Training System (ISTS) necessitates a coordinated methodology to handle inter and intra process communications. Several issues must be considered before committing to one form of process communication. Such issues involve system portability, real time interaction, distributed system realization, memory, and multi-process communications. This document examines the application of different communication strategies to ISTS. The advantages and disadvantages of using memory-based InterProcess Communication (IPC) facilities in SunOS operating system versus the use of properties for communication in an X Window environment are described. Furthermore, the use of rule-based blackboard architecture to handle communications between modules within the Tutoring group is presented. This research provides the ground work for a flexible and generic Intelligent Simulation Training System.

An Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) can be viewed as a system that provides an environment for exploration and learning. An Intelligent Simulation Training System (ISTS) is a generic Intelligent Tutoring System that can easily be adapted to different domains. ISTS uses dynamic simulation scenarios as a basis for drilling and instructing a trainee. The functionalities of ISTS include the individualization of the lesson plan to the needs of a trainee, the evaluation of the trainee's overall performance, and the generation of expert feedbacks. The personalized scenario is dynamically generated with emphasis on the weakness of each trainee. This paper presents a thorough description of several functionalities within the ISTS. These include lesson creation, dynamic scenario modification, material presentation, and the generation of expert feedback.

A generic object-oriented model for building intelligent simulation training systems with adaptive, interactive, pseudo-real-time simulations is presented. The model provides for the generic modeling of simulation scenarios that train the student to detect and remove undesirable situations, and to create desirable situations. These situations are organized, created (as a tutorial activity), detected, traced, supported and explained by a lattice of generically defined curriculum objects. Simulation objects are modified by the student whose actions may remove or delete situations. The feedback of the system and the evaluation procedures are based on the timing of the student actions, their side effects and their comparison with expert action suggestions. Activated segments of a distinct rule-based domain-expert system generate suggestions and evaluations. >

A modified GERT network for automatic acquisition of temporal knowledge

This paper describes a technique which has been developed for automatically acquiring temporal knowledge for use in an Intelligent Simulation Training System (ISTS)*. The objective of the ISTS is to train students in monitoring and controlling physical objects in time and space. The ISTS consists of a graphic computer simulation, an expert system, and a user interface. The graphic computer simulation represents the system to be monitored. The trainee responds to routine and/or critical situations as depicted in the simulation by typing in commands to simulation objects.ISTS domain knowledge is automatically acquired by a subsystem known as ELICIT: Expertise Learner and Intelligent Causal Inference Tool. ELICIT incorporates a modified GERT network for representing knowledge concerning dependencies among temporal events. The network is used as a basis for prompting the domain expert for knowledge. In addition, ELICIT draws upon knowledge contained in the network for the development of contingency plans concerning timing of events. This implementation is coded in Common LISP and Joshua (a knowledge representation language developed by Symbolics, Inc.) on a Symbolics 3630 LISP machine.
