Tailoring the optical properties of polyvinyl alcohol-polyvinyl pyrrolidone based polymers

In this work, new polymeric based films are fabricated and optically characterized. The new films include poly(vinyl alcohol), plain and blended with poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), comprising glycerin, and acetic acid,as additives. XRD and FTIR analysis were conducted to give insight into the structure of the films. The reflectance and transmittance for these films are measured in the UV–vis–NIR regions. Using these measurements, the refractive index, the permittivity and many other optical constants are retrieved. The results reveal that the fabricated films possess an extinction coefficient that is almost 3 times less, and a refractive index that is 0.1 higher than plain PVA in the telecommunications wavelength range. Besides, a noticeable increase in the refractive index of the films is achieved, up to 0.35 higher compared with silicon dioxide at the near infrared spectral region. Moreover, when compared to silicon and Germanium, in the ultraviolet and visible spectral region, a substantial reduction of 3 to 4 orders of magnitudes in extinction coefficient is achieved, in the favor of the investigated films. Interestingly, the films also show small dispersion over a wide range of wavelength. Therefore, the newly proposed films can be candidates for optoelectronics, solar cells, and integrated optics applications where high refractive index and low loss are desired for high density of fabrication.

A monolithic light scattering particle CMOS sensor for integrated optics application

Monolithic CMOS sensor Particulate matter (PM) pollution in the air seriously endangers human health. The concentration of PM becomes an important indicator of the air quality. Traditional PM detector is generally based on MCU system, in which an embedded algorithm is used for counting the number of the scattered pulses. In the paper, a monolithic light scattering particle CMOS sensor is proposed and designed. The novel PM sensor IC, which combines the photometer method with CMOS circuit, can replace the traditional embedded system, with the benefits of high speed, high precision while low cost. The designed sensor shows the detection speed less than 2 μs, the detection error less than 0.01 mg/m3, and the overall layout area less than 1 mm2. The novel particle CMOS sensor proposed in this paper shows rapid and high-precision detection, while also reducing the manufacturing cost. It can be applied widely in the particle sensing scenarios, including the air pollution and water quality checking, etc..

Integrated Optical Filters with Hyperbolic Metamaterials

The growing development of nanotechnology requires the design of new devices that integrate different functionalities at a reduced scale. For on-chip applications such as optical communications or biosensing, it is necessary to selectively transmit a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. This function is performed by the so-called band-pass filters. While several plasmonic nanostructures of complex fabrication integrated to optical waveguides have been proposed, hyperbolic metamaterials remain almost unexplored for the design of integrated band-pass filters at optical wavelengths. By making use of the effective medium theory and finite integration technique, in this contribution we numerically study an integrated device consisting of a one-dimensional hyperbolic metamaterial placed on top of a photonic waveguide. The results show that the filling fraction, period, and number of layers modify the spectral response of the device, but not for type II and effective metal metamaterials. For the proposed Au-TiO2 multilayered system, the filter operates at a wavelength of 760 nm, spectral bandwidth of 100 nm and transmission efficiency above 40%. The designed devices open new perspectives for the development of integrated band-pass filters of small scale for on-chip integrated optics applications.

Fabrication of an erbium–ytterbium-doped waveguide amplifier at communication wavelengths for integrated optics applications

Erbium–ytterbium-doped waveguide amplifiers provide a considerable gain at telecom wavelengths, low noise, nonlinearity, and compatibility with optical networks, making it an outstanding amplification module for telecommunication systems. This study reports on the fabrication of an optical waveguide amplifier for integrated optics. The signal can be amplified by using rare-earth dopings such as erbium (Er), which works at telecommunication wavelengths, i.e., 1.55 μm. Er-doped phosphate glass waveguides can be deposited using the sol–gel method, which is convenient for preparing active films on several substrates. The Er concentration was 1–2 × 1020/cm3. The confinement and the gain of the waveguide can be increased by reducing the width of the waveguide to 0.5 μm. In such a case, more than 1dB net gain can be achieved without additional pump power. The other material used as a dopant in optical amplifiers is ytterbium (Yb). For Er energy levels, a more significant pump intensity is necessary for inversion due to the limited absorption cross-section. This issue is solved by including a substance with a large absorption cross-section that transfers energy to Er. The Ag–Na ion exchange process is then used to fabricate the buried waveguide. In such a process, ions trade between the core material and the molten salt. Then, the waveguide is immersed in the molten salt. The fabricated waveguide has low loss, and a net gain of around 2 dB at a wavelength of approximately 1.55 μm in Er:Yb:Al: phospho silicate glass is achieved. The focus of the research is on the fabrication procedure (materials and methods) of the waveguide.

Enhancement of second-harmonic generation from Fano plasmonic metasurfaces by introducing structural asymmetries.

Resonant plasmonic metasurfaces have attracted much attention for great potential in augmenting nonlinear optical conversion at the nanoscale and thus related sensing and integrated optics applications. In this work, we use the nonlinear scattering theory to numerically investigate enhanced second-harmonic generation (SHG) from Fano metasurfaces which consist of gold asymmetric double-bars. We find that the Fano resonance at the fundamental wavelength boosts the nonlinear response by more than a factor of 60. On this basis, by introducing translational and rotational structural asymmetries, the SHG signal is further amplified because of the broken mirror symmetry. More specifically, under the optimal condition, the previously suppressed SHG component can be greatly released and play a more important role compared to the original existing SHG component in an extra 6-fold enhancement in total SHG intensity. The 360-fold enhancement by tailoring both resonance quality and structural asymmetries indicates the clear and important roles of both linear resonance and local-field distribution in reaching the largest SHG emission. Our results are a step towards enlarging SHG responses of more complex plasmonic nanostructures.

Tuning the optical constants of PVA based films for optoelectronic applications

Thin-film samples of polyvinyl alcohol, pure and mixed with polyvinylpyrrolidone, glycerin and hydrofluoric acid are prepared. The transmittance and reflectance are measured in the ultra-violet, visible and near infrared ranges. The optical properties are determined including the refractive index, the permittivity, the single-oscillator model parameters, the ratio of the free carrier concentration to its effective mass, the loss tangent, the optical conductivity, the skin depth and the surface and volume energy-loss functions. The parameters are deduced based on the thin film model and iterative calculations. It was found that, when compared to pure PVA, adding glycerin and hydrofluoric acid to PVA/PVP films results in a strong reduction of the extinction coefficient, up to 250% with an increase in the real refractive index around the telecommunications wavelength of 1550 nm. This enhances the applicability of the fabricated polymers in different optical telecommunications. Also, the optical characteristics of the fabricated samples are compared to important optical materials such as silicon and silica to show the competitiveness of the new films in the field of integrated optics applications.

Influence of heating temperature on the optical response properties and surface relief patterns of TiO2/GeO2/ormosils composite films containing azobenzene

With the progress of modern integrated optical technology, organic-inorganic composite materials have been widely used in integrated optoelectronic devices. Because of satisfying optical response properties among azobenzene, it will be an ideal choice to introduce the material into organic-inorganic composite materials. TiO2/GeO2/ormosils composite films containing azobenzene were prepared by combining the solgel technique with the spin-coating process. The optical transmission modes and loss of as-prepared samples at different transmission wavelengths were researched by a prism coupler. The result shows that the composite film is multi-mode transmission at the transmission wavelength of 633 nm and single-mode transmission at 1538 nm. The transmission loss is sufficient for applications in optical elements. The response properties and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of as-prepared samples at different heating temperatures were also studied. The composite films obtained at 50°C have the best optical response properties. Furthermore, the banding energy and chemical composition among the films were measured through x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Finally, the surface topography of as-prepared samples was observed by atomic force microscopy. The surface of the composite film appears with patterns of relief under the appropriate temperature. The above results show that the as-prepared TiO2/GeO2/ormosils composite films containing azobenzene will be a kind of ideal material in the field of integrated optics applications.

Simultaneous generation of a broadband MIR and NIR frequency comb in a GaP microring.

Midinfrared (MIR) optical frequency combs are of great significance as broadband coherent light sources used in extensive areas such as coherent communications and molecule detections. Conventional MIR combs are usually restricted in size and power, while most microcombs are focused in the near-infrared (NIR) region because of the limited accessible Q-factor of microrings and the poor performances of available pumps. In this paper, we numerically demonstrate the simultaneous generation of a broadband MIR and NIR comb in a GaP microring with an additive waveguide. The achieved octave-spanning (1890-4050 nm) MIR microcomb at a low pump power of 34 mW can be effectively converted to the second-harmonic NIR comb covering 1120-1520 nm with separate dispersion optimization of the ring cavity and straight waveguide. The proposed system has the advantage of simple structure and low power threshold, which could find potential in highly integrated MIR optical sources and related applications.

The Method of Low-Temperature ICP Etching of InP/InGaAsP Heterostructures in Cl2-Based Plasma for Integrated Optics Applications.

Chlorine processes are widely used for the formation of waveguide structures in InP-based optoelectronics. Traditionally, ICP etching of InP in a Cl2-based plasma requires substrate temperatures in the range of 150–200 °C. This condition is mandatory, since during the etching process low-volatility InClx components are formed and at insufficient temperatures are deposited onto substrate, leading to the formation of defects and further impossibility of the formation of waveguide structures. The need to preheat the substrate limits the application of chlorine processes. This paper presents a method of ICP etching an InP/InGaAsP heterostructure in a Cl2/Ar/N2 gas mixture. A feature of the developed method is the cyclic etching of the heterostructure without preliminary heating. The etching process starts at room temperature. In the optimal etching mode, the angle of inclination of the sidewalls of the waveguides reached 88.8° at an etching depth of more than 4.5 μm. At the same time, the surface roughness did not exceed 30 nm. The selectivity of the etching process with respect to the SiNx mask was equal to 9. Using the developed etching method, test integrated waveguide elements were fabricated. The fabricated active integrated waveguide (p-InP epitaxial layers were not removed) with a width of 2 μm demonstrated an optical loss around 11 ± 1.5 dB/cm at 1550 nm. The insertion loss of the developed Y- and MMI-splitters did not exceed 0.8 dB.

All-Optical Switching Demonstrated with Photoactive Yellow Protein Films.

Integrated optics (IO) is a field of photonics which focuses on manufacturing circuits similar to those in integrated electronics, but that work on an optical basis to establish means of faster data transfer and processing. Currently, the biggest task in IO is finding or manufacturing materials with the proper nonlinear optical characteristics to implement as active components in IO circuits. Using biological materials in IO has recently been proposed, the first material to be investigated for this purpose being the protein bacteriorhodopsin; however, since then, other proteins have also been considered, such as the photoactive yellow protein (PYP). In our current work, we directly demonstrate the all-optical switching capabilities of PYP films combined with an IO Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) for the first time. By exploiting photoreactions in the reaction cycle of PYP, we also show how a combination of exciting light beams can introduce an extra degree of freedom to control the operation of the device. Based on our results, we discuss how the special advantages of PYP can be utilized in future IO applications.

Bright and Efficient Sensitized Near-Infrared Photoluminescence from an Organic Neodymium-Containing Composite Material System.

Intense organic neodymium (Nd3+) emission is obtained with near-infrared (NIR) emission equivalent in intensity to that of an organic semiconductor emitting material. The advantage of Nd3+ emission is its narrow line width and NIR emission, which is enhanced by ∼3000 times at low excitation power through an efficient sensitization effect from a composite organic sensitizer. This performance is optimized at high concentrations of Nd3+ ions, and the organic perfluorinated system provides the ion excitations with a quantum efficiency of ∼40%. The material system is applicable to thin films that are compatible with integrated optics applications.

Femtosecond laser direct writing continuous phase vortex gratings with proportionally distributed diffraction energy

In this Letter, we propose a type of continuous phase vortex gratings (CPVGs), which are able to generate a series of vortex beams with equal or proportional diffracted energies and different topological charges (TCs). A set of CPVGs with dimensions (60 × 60 × 1.1 μm3) are directly designed by mathematical equations, which avoids the use of iterative algorithms. The CPVGs are fabricated by femtosecond laser direct writing (FsLDW) with photoresist, and the experimentally generated vortex beams are in good agreement with the theoretical designs, exhibiting high optical efficiencies. In addition, we realized a CPVG onto the tip of a composite fiber for integrated optical systems. Our work paves the way for applications in optical communications, optical manipulations, and high-performance integrated optics.

Optical filter based on metal-insulator-metal plasmonic coupled cavities

In this study, an optical filter based on a plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) coupled waveguide resonator is simulated and investigated. Using the proposed structure leads to realizing a filter function between targeted wavelengths by manipulating the appropriate geometrical parameters of the resonators. Two-dimensional FDTD-based simulation is implemented to analyze the filter properties. The filter proposed proves to be a potential candidate for highly integrated optical circuit applications.

High-order orbital angular momentum generation in a helically twisted pig-nose-shaped core microstructured optical fibers.

We propose a helically twisted pig-nose-shaped core microstructured optical fiber (HPC-MOF) for orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode generation. It comprises seven air-hole rings hexagonally arranged with two air holes and one air-hole ring replaced, forming two cores in a line 3 µm from the fiber center and one ring-shaped core. The fiber is helically twisted along the rotation axis. In this fiber, supermodes in inner dual-core can be coupled to high-order modes in outer ring-core, yielding OAM ring-shaped modes at different certain wavelengths, and various OAM modes at different twist rates were investigated in this paper. We demonstrate the distinct coupling differences of symmetric and antisymmetric supermodes in inner dual-core when the supermode coupled to ring-core mode. A modal matching rule is presented to characterize the coupling differences, which is suitable for describing supermode coupling characteristics in HPC-MOFs. Compared to conventional methods, these properties indicate that the fiber can generate higher-order OAM modes and more easily integrate into all-fiber optical communication systems, with potential in OAM generators, light-controlling devices, and integrated optics applications.

Polarization-controlled efficient and unidirectional surface plasmon polariton excitation enabled by metagratings in a generalized Kretschmann configuration.

In this paper, we propose a generalized Kretschmann configuration that employs a metagrating to replace the prism, realizing polarization-controlled efficient and unidirectional surface plasmon polariton (SPP) excitation. This dielectric phase gradient metagrating on the top surface of a silica substrate is designed to deflect incident light, which subsequently launches SPP wave by means of momentum matching on the metal film coated on the bottom surface. A series of metagratings is designed to enable the SPP excitation by circularly or linearly polarized incident light. The flexibility and tunability of this design to efficiently control SPPs show potential to find wide applications in diverse integrated optics and SPP devices.

Graphene-based polarization-sensitive metasurfaces for integrated optics applications.

In this study, polarization detection of the incident wave with amplitude and frequency is achieved by proposed graphene-based metasurfaces for integrated optics applications. Metasurfaces consist of elliptical nanodisks of graphene as the meta-atoms. Synthesis of the metasurfaces is based on the analytical approach of the equivalent conductivity method. The elliptical nanodisks play an asymmetric meta-atom role with respect to the polarization of the incident waves. This concept is applied to design polarization selective metasurfaces. Two types of polarization-sensitive metasurfaces are designed. One of them has unique nanodisks that change the absorbance coefficient by varying the polarization of the incident wave in an absorber structure. The second one has three types of elliptical nanodisks with various dimensions and orientations that distinguish the polarization. This metasurface is used in a demultiplexing structure to select a desired wave with a specific frequency.

High-Q microresonators integrated with microheaters on a 3C-SiC-on-insulator platform.

We demonstrate, to the best of our knowledge, the first thermally reconfigurable high-Q silicon carbide (SiC) microring resonators with integrated microheaters on a 3C-SiC-on-insulator platform. We extract a thermo-optic coefficient of around 2.67×10-5/K for 3C-SiC from wavelength shift of a resonator heated by a hot plate. Finally, we fabricate a 40-μm-radius microring resonator with intrinsic Q of 139,000 at infrared wavelengths (∼1550 nm) after integration with a NiCr microheater. By applying current through the microheater, a resonance shift of 30pm/mW is achieved in the microring, corresponding to ∼50 mW per π phase shift. This platform offers an easy and reliable way for integration with electronic devices as well as great potential for diverse integrated optics applications.

Nanobridges formed through electron beam image reversal lithography for plasmonic mid-infrared resonators with high aspect ratio nanogaps

We present the emergence of nanobridge networks through a nanofabrication technique based on image-reversal electron beam lithography and demonstrate plasmonic structures with high aspect ratio sub-20 nm gaps capable of strong intensity enhancement in the mid-infrared range. The proposed technique, which employs the engineering of natural formations of nanobridges in predefined templates, could serve as an alternative path for realizing mid-infrared plasmonic resonators with potential applications in surface plasmon polariton-based integrated optics, and enhancement of light–matter interaction for high efficiency photodetection and nanoscale light emitters.

Spectrokinetic characterization of photoactive yellow protein films for integrated optical applications

In this paper, the photocycle of the dried photoactive yellow protein film has been investigated in different humidity environments, in order to characterize its nonlinear optical properties for possible integrated optical applications. The light-induced spectral changes of the protein films were monitored by an optical multichannel analyser set-up, while the accompanying refractive index changes were measured with the optical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy method. To determine the number and kinetics of spectral intermediates in the photocycle, the absorption kinetic data were analysed by singular value decomposition and multiexponential fitting methods, whose results were used in a subsequent step of fitting a photocycle model to the data. The absorption signals of the films were found to be in strong correlation with the measured light-induced refractive index changes, whose size and kinetics imply that photoactive yellow protein may be a good alternative for utilization as an active nonlinear optical material in future integrated optical applications.

Spatiotemporal continuum generation in polariton waveguides

We demonstrate the generation of a spatiotemporal optical continuum in a highly nonlinear exciton–polariton waveguide using extremely low excitation powers (2-ps, 100-W peak power pulses) and a submillimeter device suitable for integrated optics applications. We observe contributions from several mechanisms over a range of powers and demonstrate that the strong light–matter coupling significantly modifies the physics involved in all of them. The experimental data are well understood in combination with theoretical modeling. The results are applicable to a wide range of systems with linear coupling between nonlinear oscillators and particularly to emerging polariton devices that incorporate materials, such as gallium nitride and transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers that exhibit large light–matter coupling at room temperature. These open the door to low-power experimental studies of spatiotemporal nonlinear optics in submillimeter waveguide devices.
