Efficacy of mobile-based educational intervention using Instructional Systems Design in promoting preventive behaviors for sexually transmitted infections among Iranian women: a randomized controlled trial

BackgroundWomen who are sexually active are at risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), which can cause serious difficulties for their reproductive health. However, despite the high global burden of STIs, most infections are preventable with education for behavioral change. The purpose of this study is to investigate the Efficacy of Mobile-Based Educational Intervention Using Instructional Systems Design in Promoting Preventive Behaviors for Sexually Transmitted Infections among Iranian Women.MethodsThis randomized controlled trial aimed at promoting preventive behaviors related to STIs in Iranian women with an educational intervention based on the Instructional Systems Design (ISD) in 2022. The participants in this study were recruited from a single center, specifically the Health House No. 3 located in District 11 of Tehran Municipality. Two instruments were used in the present study: a) a valid scale titled: “Four-Scale of STI Preventive Behaviors”, and b) a researcher-made Questionnaire titled: “Social perception affecting sexually transmitted infections (SOPESTI)”. These tools contain 8 demographic items and specific questions with a total of 68 five-point Likert scales. The intervention comprised three phases: a pre-test (baseline), a training program, and two follow-up assessments (4 and 12 weeks after the start of the training program). The experimental group received education through a mobile app, while the control group received no intervention. SPSS v.26 was used, with a significance level of P < 0.05. The chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), and repeated measures ANOVA were used to analyze the data.ResultsA total of 80 women, with a mean age of 36.524 ± 6.91 (experiment group) and 34.78 ± 8.20 (control group), respectively, participated in the trial. The study revealed a statistically significant difference in the mean score for eight domains, including STIs Knowledge, STIs Vulnerability, STIs Preventive Self-efficacy, STIs Prevention intentions, STIs Perceived social exclusion, STIs Perceived cognitive barriers, STIs Perceived social support, and STIs Perceived risks in the experiment group following the intervention compared to before the intervention (p < 0.05).ConclusionThe results of this study showed that a mobile-based educational intervention based on the ISD model had a significant effect on the preventive behaviors of STIs in Iranian women. These results highlight the potential benefit of mobile health in enhancing reproductive health.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov IRCT20200602047638N1. DEVELOPMENT OF LEARNING MODELS IN WEB PROGRAMMING COURSES WITH COMPUTER-BASED LEARNING TUTORIALS

Web programming courses are practical courses that can only run with the help of computer devices. The content or learning content in web programming courses is in program code directly created with a computer. The models developed include conceptual models, procedural models, and physical models. The research method used is Research and Development (R&amp;amp;D) using the Dick &amp;amp; Carey instructional system design model combined with the Hannafin &amp;amp; Peck model. The learning model was tested for feasibility and effectiveness before being implemented. The learning model developed has four components: syntax, reaction principle, social system, and support system. The feasibility of the model is seen from the percentage of the results of the one-to-one evaluation, which is 91.47%, the small group evaluation is 94.88% and the field trial evaluation is 92%. The effectiveness test results can be seen from the increase in the post-test score with the pre-test reaching 68.7% and the percentage of the success rate of student studies who have carried out learning with the tutorial learning model reaching 83%. The result of this research is a web programming learning model computer-based learning tutorial that is effective for improving student learning outcomes in web programming courses.

Application of Instructional Design Models by Prospective Teacher Students

Prospective teacher students have been heavily involved in research on developing information and communication technology (ICT)-based teaching materials. The problems that exist until now often encounter obstacles in applying the right instructional system design model. This study is intended to formulate an instructional system design model that students can choose according to the characteristics of the ICT-based teaching materials developed. The study used an ex post facto approach with a descriptive method. A total of 528 student research reports in the 2017-2021 period became the population and the research sample. Observations were made on research reports to collect data, both quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, while qualitative data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana technique. The study found that there were six selected instructional system design models, of which the ADDIE model was the most chosen (37.50%), followed by ASSURE (20.45%), Dick &amp; Carey (19.32%), Four-D (14.39%), Rapid Prototyping (6.82%), and the Kemp model being the least chosen model (1.52%). The main reason for choosing the model is the certainty of steps, ease of use, and user friendly, while many steps are not considered. As a result, the ADDIE, ASSURE, Dick &amp; Carey, and Four-D models were widely chosen, while flexible models such as Kemp and Rapid Prototyping were not widely chosen because they require consideration in starting and ending development. Experience brings them the competence to choose the right instructional system design model.

Designing Online Public Education Contents in Korean Medicine Using the Rapid-Prototyping Instructional Systems Design Model

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to design Korean-themed online public education content in Korean medicine using rapid prototyping instructional systems design (RPISD). This study presents cases of developing and converting face-to-face general education programs designed to increase the interest in and understanding of Korean medicine for the public into online programs within a short timeframe.Methods: This qualitative study is design and development research, which used the RPISD model to analyze the available resources utilized in the rapid development of public educational content and propose systematization and optimization measures by analyzing the needs of clients, learners, and the environment. The ＜Treasured Mirror ofEastern Medicine(DUBG)Open Course＞ was developed according to the model procedure, which involved needs analysis, development of course materials and manuscript, and storyboard creation and its filming and editing. Usability tests were conducted at all stages, and the opinions of clients, instructors, experts, and instructional designers were accommodated and reflected at each stage.Results: Using the rapid prototyping model, ＜Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine(DUBG)Open Course＞ was organized into five classes of 20 minutes each. Each class was developed in Korean and included English, Chinese, and Japanese subtitles in addition to Korean under the cooperative instructional design among clients, subject-matter experts, instructional designer and learners.Conclusion: The cooperative instructional design of stakeholders is significant in developing Korean medicine public education content online through extensive interaction and feedback from stakeholders in the early stage of educational content development.

Mobile Learning Model for Children with Special Learning Needs

The mobile learning developed for children with special learning needs have limited users even within the same learning disability because severity in learning disability varies greatly even within a specific learning disability. Mobile learning developed for these children currently uses the same model used by any mobile application development where it caters for the masses rather than focusing on personalisation. The objective of this paper is to propose a mobile learning model for children with special learning needs, named APIE. ADDIE model is a generic instructional system design model that consists of processes: Analysis, Design, Develop, Implement and Evaluate. APIE is a modification from the ADDIE model, which makes APIE a mobile learning application development model. APIE iterates the design and develop processes under the Personalisation stage to explore the most suitable way for customisation for individual learning. APIE is applied to the development of a mobile learning for Dyslexic Children to assist the children to read and spell. Through APIE, a mobile learning application, DysleRead is produced. DysleRead integrates two classroom approaches: sight word and phonic where teachers can set and monitor individual learning needs of the children. The teachers find DysleRead helpful to teach the children. This shows that the mobile learning application produced using APIE meets the objective to cater for personalisation within a specific learning need without undermining the role of the teachers. Hypothetically, APIE model is applicable to other special learning needs too.

Design and Development of Human Excretory System Model to Teach A Biology Concept in Ilorin, Nigeria

Meaningful instruction takes place only with the appropriate use of instructional materials, especially in their real form. Inability to have access to mammalian internal organs is one of the challenges in teaching some concepts in Biology. Lack of practical experience in the teaching and learning of Biology that leads to poor mastery of important scientific skills and concepts could be among those factors responsible for students’ poor performance in Biology. Hence, the need to design and develop the Model of Human Excretory System (MHES) to teach Biology concepts in secondary schools. The study was a developmental research design, ADDIE instructional system design model was adopted in the production and evaluation of the model. The development involved four out of the five stages of the ADDIE model. The adapted phases include ADDE; these are Analysis, Design, Development, and Evaluation. Findings of this study revealed that: The model of the human excretory system was successfully developed using four (ADDE) out of the five stages of the ADDIE model as a guide and the cost of developing the model of the human excretory system was determined and found to be cheaper through the use of locally sourced materials.

With the increase in human lifespans and the consequent emergence of an aging society, senior citizens aged 50 years or older, unlike the elderly in the past, are receiving attention as new leaders in modern society and the economy. These people prefer an experience-centered culture and art education to doing exercise or conducting dynamic activities. It seems that programs involving color that employ elements that can be useful in their daily lives, rather than general education to increase their knowledge, must be established. Accordingly, this study includes the goal of developing a program that combines elements and colors according to the interests of active seniors who are keenly interested in appearance and fashion. A color education program was designed by combining the analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation (ADDIE) program—an instructional systems design model proposed by Seels and Richy (1944)—with the discipline-based art education (DBAE) approach created by Eisner. The fashion-centered color education program the was developed consisted of programs titled “Personal Color Education Program,” “Fashion Color Styling Education Program,” “Fashion Products Art Coloring Education Program,” and “Interior Color Coordination Education Program.” To valuate the program’s effects, two 45-minute sessions of color education per week were taught to 10 active seniors in their 50s and 60s over four weeks. The results demonstrated that satisfaction with the program was extremely high and that color was also found to be helpful in both work performance and daily life. The fashion-centered color education program was found to increase the understanding of self-expression, creativity, arousal of interest, improvement in expression, and color. The experimental treatment with the fashion-centered color education program had substantially changed how color was perceived before and after the treatment. In addition, ego-resilience, self-esteem, life satisfaction, psychological satisfaction, and self-efficacy improved among the study participants.

Developing an Interactive Storybook Application ‘Jack and the Dirty Smelly Beast’ for English Language Proficiency among Children

The high percentage of students who are still struggling with the English language is worrisome, even though there are many well-planned strategies and education policies that are developed to resolve this problem. It is a universal belief that learning a foreign language at a young age through reading plays an important role. Accordingly, the aim of this research is to design, develop and evaluate an interactive storybook application combined with suitable multimedia elements and features to encourage children to read. The interactive storybook entitled 'Jack and the Dirty Smelly Beast' was developed using Instructional System Design (ISD) and Rapid Prototyping model. An experimental study was conducted with 17 respondents between the ages of 6 – 8 years to test the effects of the multimedia elements and features in improving children’s learning. Their responses were recorded and analysed using descriptive analysis. The findings showed that respondents agreed that learning experience improved significantly and attracted children to read when using this application. In conclusion, by using correct multimedia elements and suitable features in the interactive storybook application, it is envisaged that the children’s comprehension in learning a foreign language can be expanded. This research foresees there is enormous opportunity for literacy development in foreign language learning in the early ages through the creation of an interactive storybook application with suitable multimedia elements and features for children.

DEVELOPING WEB-BASED ONLINE TEST SYSTEM TO BOOST IELTS ACADEMIC READING SCORE

Abstract: Web technology provides rich resources for both educators and learners in English teaching and learning process. In this context, the study aims at developing web-based online test for IELTS academic reading test on the users need for learners and educator of Universitas Darussalam Gontor. Addressing the issue of online test developing, this study utilized Alessi and Trollip instructional system design model. The formative evaluation and the increase in the average score at the pre-test and post-test of the learning motivation included alpha testing validated by two material and media experts and beta testing on learners’ attitude toward the online test, while summative evaluation covered learning outcomes. Upon analysis, the finding demonstrated that: (1) the resulting website: https://gets.unida.gontor.ac.id/pertanyaan/quiz was able to provide online evaluation for assessing reading performance among learners; (2) the increase in the average score on the pre-test and post-test of the learning outcomes of all learners was 0.43 (moderate category) and learner motivation scale was 0.38 (Medium-g courses). Hence, web-based online test could optimize learners’ excitement to assess their IELTS proficiency.

Effect of Visualised Case-Based Learning Strategy On Students’ Academic Performance in Chemistry in Ibadan Metropolis, Nigeria

This study investigated the effect of the use of visualized case-based learning (VCBL) strategy on chemistry students’ academic achievement. The theoretical framework for this study is based on Thorndike’s idea of transfer of learning. A sample of one hundred and forty-five (145) senior secondary school II chemistry students drawn from four intact classes in two local government areas of Ibadan metropolis, were used for the research. Three well validated instruments were used to collect data. The VCBL package was developed following the Smith and Ragan Instructional System Design (ISD) Model (1999). This model comprises four stages: namely, Analysis, Design, Development and Implementation/Evaluation. Data were analysed by means of inferential statistics (ANCOVA, EMM and Tukey’s post-hoc). Results showed that there is significant main effect of treatment on students’ achievement in Chemistry (F (2, 248) =17.539; p&lt;0.05; η2=0.124); implying that the posttest scores of students’ achievement in achievement significantly differ between the treatment and conventional groups. It was concluded that VCBL strategy has the potential to enable students understand chemistry better by way of promoting transfer of learning. In light of this, implications were discussed and relevant suggestions made. &#x0D;

Adapting during the pandemic: A case study of using the rapid prototyping instructional system design model to create online instructional content

As online teaching and learning become increasingly prevalent in colleges and universities, many librarians in higher education are tasked with creating instructional content adapted to the online format. Most extant literature has focused on the application of popular instructional design models, such as ADDIE, to an online format.However, few studies have addressed the models that would facilitate instructional adaptation in order to transition from a face-to-face to an online environment quickly; specifically, there is a gap regarding modes through which to make this shift quickly due to unusual circumstances, such as the COVID-19 global pandemic. This case study seeks to demonstrate how several resource-constrained librarians at University of Idaho Library applied the Rapid Prototyping instructional system design model to develop new instructional content to promote information literacy for incoming students enrolled in first-year writing classes in an online format.

Teacher Professional Development: Approaches and Lessons from a Pilot Study in Ethiopia

Effective teacher professional development is the key to improving primary school teachers’ ability to implement learner-centered education; however, guidance on building such professional development programs for teachers in Africa that accommodates local realities and cultures has rarely appeared in the literature. Reported in this study, a collaboration between a Korean primary teacher education institution and a science and technology higher education institution in central Ethiopia produced a professional development program for primary school teachers in Ethiopia using the instructional systems design model. A five-phase development process, namely analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation was used to develop and implement a total of 60 lessons presented in 30 videos. Teacher participants were highly satisfied with the results, reporting significant improvement in their self-efficacy about using learner-centered education approaches after completing the program. Lessons learned are provided for those seeking to expand professional development opportunities for teachers in Africa.

Abstract 237: Curriculum Development of Pitt Bystander Response Education: Developing "Caring Leaders" Through Early Exposure to Cpr Fundamentals

Introduction: Fewer than 25% of US adults feel trained in bystander CPR (bCPR). Barriers include the lack of social acceptance of bCPR, poor understanding of Good Samaritan laws, and inadequate knowledge of the steps needed to help a patient suffering out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Hypothesis: We developed a novel, streamlined curriculum for children ages 11-13 to introduce the principles of bCPR and frame it as a shared social responsibility, hoping to increase bystander response and motivate young citizens to seek future CPR certification. Methods: The curriculum development process employed the Assess Design Develop Implement Evaluate (ADDIE) method of the Instructional System Design (ISD) model. We used an iterative approach where the novel curriculum was developed and then presented to stakeholders for review, editing and revision. Stakeholders included experts in CPR training, educational theory and elementary/middle school education. Pre- and post- survey tools were designed to evaluate curriculum outcomes, using the same process. Upon completing the iterative review, the curriculum and surveys were prepared for a pilot implementation in a middle school setting. Results: Using the ISD approach, we consulted with 9 experts to design the CPR curriculum. Three curriculum goals were identified: awareness, social responsibility and training. The novel curriculum will meet these goals through a single 50 minute in-class session of didactic, technique demonstration of compression-only CPR, and hands-on practice with manikins. Due to the present global pandemic, the curriculum has not yet been implemented as planned. Current efforts are being made to determine the feasibility of potential future implementation of the program and/or virtual options due to need for social distancing. Conclusions: An iterative process can be used to bring together multiple stakeholders to design a novel, age appropriate CPR training curriculum. Another round of stakeholder review of the curriculum is planned post piloting prior to wider dissemination.

Development of an Instructional System Design Model as a Guideline for Lecturers in Creating a Course Using Blended Learning Approach

Blended learning is not just merely blending face-to-face and online learning. The biggest challenge is making the right mix of relevant learning settings and teaching strategies to meet the learning outcomes. The latest study showed that research focusing on the instructional system design (ISD) model developments, especially related to blended learning approach, were still limited. This study aims to develop an ISD model that can provide a guideline for lecturers in creating a good course using a blended learning approach. This study applied a formative research method. A series of formative evaluation using several formative data collection techniques were used. They were expert review, one-to-one evaluations, and field tests. This study involved 242 respondents, consists of 7 instructional design and e-learning experts, and 235 lecturers. After conducted a series of formative evaluation stages, respondents able to create a good quality course using the ISD model developed. Most of them get fair and low scores on the field test 1. The score increased significantly on the field test 2, where 33.6% get excellent scores, 48.2% get good scores, and 28.2% get fair scores. The score also increased significantly on field test 3 60.5% get excellent scores, 33.6% get good scores, and only 5.9% get poor scores. Hence, it can be concluded that the ISD model developed is feasible and usable. It can be used by higher education lecturers in Indonesia as a guideline in creating a course using blended learning approach.

Objectives: This study aimed to develop a smoking cessation education program and to provide basic data for evaluating program for university students majoring in health sciences. Methods: The education program was developed based on the instructional system design model(ADDIE), that was based on literature review, brainstorming, and interviews of related experts. Education program was implemented for 2 sessions of 3 hours to the 82 university students majoring in health science. Knowledge, competency, and self-efficacy for performance of smoking cessation were analyzed. One group pre- & post-test design was used for evaluation of this program. Results: In the analysis stage, a total of 5 duties, 16 tasks, and 55 task elements were derived. In the design and development stage, based on job analysis, education program contents were composed of understanding tobacco, planning and implementation of smoking cessation program, smoking cessation counseling and drug treatment. After this education program, students achieved remarkable improvement in increasing knowledge, competency, and self-efficacy for smoking cessation counselling and program. Conclusions: It is needed to be included the smoking cessation education in department related to health science regular course.

Development and Validation of Web-based Courseware for Junior Secondary School Basic Technology Students in Nigeria

This research aimed to develop and validate a web-based courseware for junior secondary school basic technology students in Nigeria. In this study, a mixed method quantitative pilot study design with qualitative components was used to test and ascertain the ease of development and validation of the web-based courseware. Dick and Carey instructional system design model was adopted for developing the courseware. Convenience sampling technique was used in selecting the three content, computer and educational technology experts to validate the web-based courseware. Non-randomized and non-equivalent Junior secondary school students from two schools were used for field trial validation. Four validating instruments were employed in conducting this study: (i) Content Validation Assessment Report (CVAR); (ii) Computer Expert Validation Assessment Report (CEAR); (iii) Educational Technology Experts Validation Assessment Report (ETEVAR); and (iv) Students Validation Questionnaire (SVQ). All the instruments were face and content validated. SVQ was pilot tested and reliability coefficient of 0.85 was obtained using Cronbach Alpha. CVAR, CEAR, ETEVAR were administered on content specialists, computer experts, and educational technology experts, while SVQ was administered on 83 JSS students from two selected secondary schools in Minna. The findings revealed that the process of developing web-based courseware using Dick and Carey Instructional System Design was successful. In addition, the report from the validating team revealed that the web-based courseware is valuable for learning basic technology. It is therefore recommended that web-based courseware should be produced to teach basic technology concepts on large scale.
