Editorial—Special Issue on Functional Surfaces: Manufacturing, Measuring, and Performance

Abstract Surface treatments are intimately linked to mitigating or avoiding failures due to fatigue, corrosion, and wear. In addition, the advent of new challenges in the industry—mainly associated with an enhanced sustainability of industrial processes—makes surface engineering a critical scientific field. Controlling the superficial and subsuperficial aspects of integrity is crucial in keeping mechanical components at the allowed level of energy consumption. Hence, designing functional surfaces means examining more than just the operating surface processes to get an overview of the whole chain of inputs/outputs. It has been an absolute pleasure to be guest editors for ASTM International’s Materials Performance and Characterization Special Issue on Functional Surfaces: Manufacturing, Measuring, and Performance. The call for papers was based on the investigations presented at Symposium T of XX B-MRS Meeting in Iguassu Falls, Brazil, from September 25–29, 2022. In the symposium, four invited lectures, 12 oral presentations, and 11 posters were presented to the conference attendees. From this total, seven manuscripts were revised for the Special Issue. The other two papers are from the same meeting after we called through other symposia on surface processing. The papers herein cover relevant topics on surface engineering. The first two focus on plasma technology applied to structural steel to increase its tribological and corrosion behaviors and to a polymer for a microfluidic application. Furthermore, we can find an investigation into diamond-like carbon coatings applied to the automotive industry. Additive manufacturing is another presented technology, and the effect of laser on additive manufacturing was investigated in a fourth manuscript. Another case is the plasma transferred arc, which investigated the incorporation of intermetallic for exposure at high temperatures. Next, we have a pair of two papers using double-pack cementation, incorporating the effect of metallic elements or boron into their performances. Following that is one paper about the high-velocity oxygen fuel process using metallic alloys, and the final paper is about developing the gas tungsten arc welding technique through flux-core-double-wire, enhancing the wear performance through hard carbides. We sincerely thank the authors and reviewers for their hard work and dedication. We wholeheartedly thank the ASTM staff for dealing with the issues of publishing an outstanding journal. We hope that all papers contribute to the state-of-art of the surface engineering field. Global Conference on Polymer and Composite Materials(PCM) is an annually held conference, it aims to provide a forum for academic experts and participants to exchange their experiences and share research results about all aspects of Polymer and Composite Materials and discuss the encountered practical challenges and the adopted solutions. The 10th Global Conference on Polymer and Composite Materials (PCM 2023) was held online via Microsoft Teams in Shenzhen, China from October 27-30, 2023.For the past eight years, more than 1300 experts, scholars and researchers from all over the world have been invited and presented at PCM conference, for this year in 2023, it has still received about 40 presentations in the discipline of polymer, composite materials, graphene and novel nanomaterials from 15 countries.The conference proceedings contain the papers accepted and presented at this conference. All papers were carefully reviewed by program committee members and took into consideration the breadth and depth of the research topics that fall into PCM scope. Additionally, PCM2023 was a reference and outstanding conference which attracted three remarkable keynote speakers: Prof. Shu Yin from Lab. of Environmental Inorganic Materials Chemistry, Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, Tohoku University, Japan; Prof. Esteban Broitman from SKF Research & Technology Development Center, The Netherlands and Prof. Raul D.S.G. Campilho from School of Engineering, Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), Portugal.On behalf of the conference organizers, we would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to the Guest Editor and all the Reviewers for their tremendous efforts and dedication to the conference. Fostering Professional Competencies in Engineering Undergraduates with EPS@ISEP

Engineering education addresses the development of professional competencies in undergraduates. In this context, the core set of professional competencies includes critical thinking and problem solving, effective communication, collaboration and team building, and creativity and innovation—also known as the four Cs—as well as socio-professional ethics and sustainable development—referred in this paper as the two Ss. While the four Cs were identified by the associates of the American Management Association based on the needs of the society, professional associations, and businesses; this paper proposes the two S extension to ensure that future engineers contribute to the well-being of individuals and the preservation of life on Earth. It proposes a tangible framework—the 4C2S—and an application method to analyse the contributions made by engineering capstone programmes to the development of these core competencies in future engineering professionals. The method is applied to an engineering capstone programme—the European Project Semester (EPS) offered by the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP)—and a specific project case—EPS@ISEP Pet Tracker project developed in 2013, constituting, in addition, a road map for the application of the 4C2S framework to engineering capstone programmes. The results show that EPS@ISEP complies with the 4C2S framework.

The European Project Semester at ISEP: the challenge of educating global engineers

Current engineering education challenges require approaches that promote scientific, technical, design and complementary skills while fostering autonomy, innovation and responsibility. The European Project Semester (EPS) at Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP) (EPS@ISEP) is a one semester project-based learning programme (30 European Credit Transfer Units (ECTU)) for engineering students from diverse scientific backgrounds and nationalities that intends to address these goals. The students, organised in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, are challenged to solve real multidisciplinary problems during one semester. The EPS package, although on project development (20 ECTU), includes a series of complementary seminars aimed at fostering soft, project-related and engineering transversal skills (10 ECTU). Hence, the students enrolled in this programme improve their transversal skills and learn, together and with the team of supervisors, subjects distinct from their core training. This paper presents the structure, implementation and results of the EPS@ISEP that was created in 2011 to apply the best engineering practices and promote internationalisation and engineering education innovation at ISEP.

Master's in Autonomous Systems: An Overview of the Robotics Curriculum and Outcomes at ISEP, Portugal

Robotics research in Portugal is increasing every year, but few students embrace it as one of their first choices for study. Until recently, job offers for engineers were plentiful, and those looking for a degree in science and technology would avoid areas considered to be demanding, like robotics. At the undergraduate level, robotics programs are still competing for a place in the classical engineering graduate curricula. Innovative and dynamic Master's programs may offer the solution to this gap. The Master's degree in autonomous systems at the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), Porto, Portugal, was designed to provide a solid training in robotics and has been showing interesting results, mainly due to differences in course structure and the context in which students are welcomed to study and work.

CDIO as a Foundation for Program Accreditation/Certification in Portugal

This document describes two initiatives for accreditation/certification of first and second cycle Bologna programs in Portugal. One initiative was started by the National Agency for Program Evaluation and Accreditation and is mandatory for all Bologna programs. The other initiative was launched by the Portuguese Professional Engineering Association and aims to certify, at the European level, Bologna second cycle engineering programs with the EUR-ACE quality seal. Both initiatives are essentially evidence-based and stress the importance of having an operating quality assurance system to support and monitor program execution. The Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP) experience with the CDIO and EUR-ACE frameworks is described and strong points highlighted in this article. In the end, the authors propose that combining CDIO and EUR-ACE may bring added value, because CDIO is more oriented to program operation and EUR-ACE more oriented to program management. The authors also propose the CDIO Syllabus as the link between CDIO and EUR-ACE.
