Bridging theoretical abstraction to professional practice: an assessment of LIS students’ experience of their internship program

Purpose Internships are widely used as one of the best learning tools for professional practice. The purpose of this research paper is to comprehend to what extent the LIS interns become competent with practical tasks through this program, current facilities offered by the internship-offering institutions and their plan in this regard. Design/methodology/approach This study used a mixed-method approach. To examine LIS students’ practical experience, this study conducted a survey. Participants were 110 students having internship experience from the LIS bachelor’s degree offering universities of Bangladesh. For qualitative data, representatives of internship-offering institutions were interviewed. Findings Results indicate that there is a certain lack of coordination between theoretical knowledge with practical demonstrations. Some essential ICT-based tasks missed out from this program like library automation software (e.g. KOHA); online-based cataloging such as Machine Readable Cataloguing, Resource Description and Access; digital library software (Greenstone); Institutional Repository software (Dspace, EPrint, etc.); virtual library services; radio frequency identification, etc. which should be taken into consideration in internship modules. Including faculty members and practitioners is suggested for a model internship framework ensuring ever-advanced LIS education. There is no significant difference between interns’ gender with their satisfaction level. Research limitations/implications The major limitation of this study is the absence of coverage of faculty perceptions regarding Internships. As in the higher education institution, the three stakeholder groups’ subsets, namely, faculty members, practitioners and students are parallelly important to take any initiative. Practical implications The input from interns will assist the industries in redesigning their modules in light of interns’ feedback to best prepare interns for the competitive job market. Originality/value Internship in LIS education is not a new research area; however, research attempts to show students’ experience along with organizations’ preparedness in offering internships is new in nature.

Analysis of Institutional Repository Software for Knowledge Management in Universities

Introduction: Institutional Repositories (IR) as an element of great relevance in the processes of organization, dissemination, research and preservation of information. These processes are carried out freely and free of charge following the premises of the Open Access (OA) movement, which allow applying elements of interoperability, access, and long-term preservation of universal access to information. Objective: The research has a descriptive scope and will be developed through the use of the analytical and comparative method. In the analytical phase, it is intended to carry out an exhaustive collection and review of information, which allows characterizing the use of the software, this information will access to delimit the use of the different DLMS worldwide. Method: This study, framed in a descriptive investigation, reveals the main characteristics of usability, use of metadata and interoperability of digital library management systems. Results: Regarding the benefits that can be determined with the implementation of one of the two DLMS evaluated, they are, mainly, to improve the experience and satisfaction of visitors to the IR and to achieve greater communication and feedback with the user, this by making use of communication channels offered by the IR. Conclusions: Any organization or institution can use the inputs and data obtained from this research as a reference guide to determine which system is best to create and display their digital collections. The choice generally depends on the type/format of the material, the distribution of the material, the software platform and the time frame for the establishment of the digital library.

Open source software adoption for development of institutional repositories in university libraries of Islamabad

PurposeThis study aims to explore the present status of open-source institutional repository (IR) software’s usage in the university libraries of Islamabad. This study also investigates the views, satisfaction level and challenges of librarians in the adoption and use of IR software.Design/methodology/approachA survey was conducted to collect data from the Library Information Science (LIS) professionals working in the university libraries of Islamabad. Data were collected from all library professionals of the Islamabad university libraries by using a structured questionnaire. Out of the total 104 LIS professionals, 84 participated in the study with a response ratio of 80.76%.FindingsThe findings disclose that out of 23 universities recognized by Higher Education Commission (HEC) in Islamabad, 17 (public and private) have developed IRs. Currently, university libraries that have fully implemented the IRs are less as compared with those universities that have partially implemented IR software. However, a good number of university libraries are in the process to develop IRs. Free and open-source software is being used mostly in libraries as compared with in-house developed, locally developed or commercial software. The opinion of librarians about using IR software expressed a positive attitude of librarians. Some of the major challenges encountered by the librarians in using open-source IR software include selection of suitable software and materials for digitization, lack of cooperation from the parent organization, inadequate training opportunities and lack of skilled staff.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is geographically limited to the university libraries in Islamabad.Practical implicationsThis study will encourage the Pakistani LIS professionals to use open-source software for the development of IRs in their libraries.Originality/valueThis study concludes that the development of IRs in university libraries is a need of the hour. Although the launching of IRs requires certain skills and competencies, Pakistani librarians can overcome these challenges by mastering the ICT skills.

All university authorities can follow the mentioned model for sustainable maintenance of their intellectual digital assets.

The development of institutional repositories in East Africa countries: A comparative analysis of Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda

This paper aims to examine the growth of IR in the East Africa region (Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda) from 2010-2020. This study adopted a content analysis methodology. Data for this study was extracted from OpenDOAR (Directory of Open Access Repository), ROAR (Registry of Open Access Repository) and repositories websites to identify the language used, subject covered, software used and types of content that are found in East African repositories. The findings of this study reveal that East Africa region had a total number of 66 repositories, which are registered in OpenDOAR. Kenya is a leading country in the region by having 42 repositories, followed by Tanzania with 14 repositories and Uganda have 10 repositories. The findings show that there is an increase number in the of repositories in the region from 4 in 2010 to 66 in 2020, however the growth is low compared to other parts of the world like Europe, Asia, and America. The study shows the need of librarians, researchers, stakeholders, and East Africa governments to come together to overcome the challenges that hinder the growth of repositories in the region. Mandate policies formulation, training, fund support, OA awareness and technical support are needed in overcoming those challenges. Developed DICOM standard schema with DSpace

PurposeThis paper aims to present a novel DSpace-based medical image repository system planned explicitly for storing and retrieving clinical images using digital imaging and communication in medicine (DICOM) metadata standards. DSpace institutional repository software is widely used in an academic environment for accessing and mainly storing text-related files. DICOM images are particular types of images embedded with much system-generated metadata and organised using DICOM metadata standards.Design/methodology/approachThe present paper talks about institutional repository software (DSpace) in archiving DICOM images. In the current study, the authors have tried to integrate the DICOM metadata standard with DSpace, which was compatible with Dublin Core (DC) and open archives initiative – protocol for metadata harvesting (OAI-PMH). After combining the DICOM standard with DSpace and the repository tested with a sample of 5,000 images, the retrieval results using various DICOM tags was very satisfactory. This study paves for the use of open source software (OSS) in storing and retrieving medical images.FindingsThe author has provided the DSpace software to recognised DICOM (.dcm) files in the first stage. In the second stage, a patch was developed to identify the DICOM metadata standard in Dspace, which has inbuilt DC metadata standards. Finally, in the third stage, retrieval efficiency was tested with a 5,000 .dcm image using the DICOM tag and the results were very fruitful.Research limitations/implicationsA major limitation of this study was the size of the data (5,000 DICOM images) with which the authors have tested the system. The system scalability has to be tested on various fronts like on cloud and local servers with different configurations, for which a separate study has to be done.Practical implicationsOnce this system is in place, DICOM users can stock, retrieve and access the image from the Web platform. Furthermore, this proposed repository will be the warehouse of various DICOM images with reasonable storage costs.Originality/valueIn addition to exploring the opportunities of free open source software (FOSS) implementation in medical science, this study includes issues related to the performance of an open-source repository for retrieving and preserving medical images. It created and developed Open Source DICOM Medical Image Library with DICOM metadata standard with the help of DSpace. Thus, the study will generate value for library professionals and medical professionals and FOSS vendors to understand the medical market in the context of FOSS.

Assessing the Technological Competencies of Library and Information Science Graduates and Their Employment Outcomes: A Case Study of Pakistan

The purpose of this study was to compare the self-perception of early career Library and Information Science (LIS) graduates’ Information and Communications Technology (ICT) competencies with the expectations of senior Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals’ in Pakistan. A quantitative research approach based on a survey was used in the study. Purposive sampling technique was employed to collect data from 100 early career LIS graduates and 100 LIS professionals having more than five years’ experience through a questionnaire. The researcher received 89 questionnaires from senior LIS professionals and 91 from early-career Department of Information Management (DoIM) graduates resulting in a 89% and 91% response rate respectively. The results of the study indicate that there is a gap between the expectations of senior LIS professionals’ and the perceptions of early career LIS graduates’ regarding their ICT competencies. Senior LIS professionals expected that early-career LIS graduates would have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office, computer operating systems, computer hardware and functions, social networking sites, electronic database searching, and institutional repository software. Senior LIS professionals also expected that early career LIS graduates should be familiar with research management tools such as Endnote, Mendeley and Zotero, integrated library systems and plagiarism detection software such as Turnitin and SafeAssign. The early career LIS graduates reported that they were expected to have knowledge of above-said expertise and that iy was considered essential for their future jobs. The findings of the study would be beneficial for the faculty of library schools and policymakers to make changes in the curriculum so as to minimize the gap between academia and the industry.

Use of Institutional Repository Software in Private Autonomous Engineering College Libraries of Andhra Pradesh

This work examines the issues related to use of institutional repository software among the private autonomous engineering college libraries of Andhra Pradesh. The paper tries to assess the purpose and scope of the use of institutional repository software in libraries. Andhra Pradesh had a total of fifty autonomous engineering colleges up to academic year 2018–19 as per UGC (https://ugc.ac.in/subpage/Autonomous_Colleges.aspx)1, out of which, five are government autonomous engineering colleges, and the remaining 45 are under private management. The forty five private autonomous engineering college libraries were selected for the study. Open form questionnaire was mailed to all the librarians for a free response in the respondents own words. The questionnaire related to resources available in the institutional repository software among the college libraries. Primary data were received from eight colleges on appointment visit, fifteen colleges sent it by post, eighteen colleges sent by e-mail and four colleges did not respond. The response rate was 91 percent. Out of 41 colleges only 13(31%) colleges were maintaining institutional repository software out of which 5 are using open source software, 8, in-house developed software and no one uses commercial software. The study suggests needful and helpful findings for librarians to make and implement institutional repository software in their colleges.

PEMILIHAN PERANGKAT LUNAK REPOSITORI INSTITUSI PERPUSTAKAAN PERGURUAN TINGGI DI KOTA MALANG (STUDI KASUS DI PERPUSTAKAAN UNIVERSITAS BRAWIJAYA, PERPUSTAKAAN UNIVERSITAS NEGERI MALANG, DAN PERPUSTAKAAN UNIVERSITAS MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG)

The purposes of this research are to know, describe, and analyze institutional repository softwares selection in Universitas Brawijaya (UB) Library, State University of Malang (UM) Library, and University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Library, also comparing software features of institutional repository.This research is using multi-site case study method with qualitative approach. Data was collected by observation, interviews, use of documents and audio-visual material. The results of this research indicate that the selection of software in academic library needs to pay attention to four aspects of software selection: (1) as needed; (2) have a licence; (3) technical support, training, relevant documentation and maintenance; (4) staff responsible for the selection and evaluation of digital collection software and related services to meet user or community needs. The selection of institutional repository software is not appropriate, resulting in the UB Library to migrate data from BKG to Eprints and UMM Library to migrate manually from GDL to Eprints. Academic library needs to pay attention to right aspects of software selection in building and developing institutional repositories and features.

Lessons Learned in Partnerships and Practice: Adopting Open Source Institutional Repository Software

INTRODUCTION After the establishment of the University Archives at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, it became apparent that processes needed to be established for collecting, preserving, and providing access to born-digital materials. The University Archivist established partnerships across multiple departments within the Libraries and with faculty and staff of colleges, schools, and administrative units across campus to test open source repository software and develop collections to fulfill this need. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM This case study examines three specific projects and workflows providing access to digital undergraduate honors theses, university serials, and music concert recordings. Lessons learned during the project include the success strategies for partnership formation along with the identification of project processes that need improvement, such as promotion and long term preservation. NEXT STEPS AND CONCLUSIONS The campus has transitioned to a proprietary system for the official institutional repository. However, the pilot projects examined in this study filled intermediate needs: providing a group of files and metadata for the official institutional repository and helping the Libraries to evaluate the sustainability of open source platforms. Staff gained experience and identified areas where improvement was needed. However, the most successful aspect of the project was establishing partnerships that will carry over to the new repository.

Proflavine an acridine DNA intercalating agent and strong antimicrobial possessing potential properties of carcinogen

Proflavine finds a wide array of applications in clinical, therapeutic, industrial and cutting edge research. This study investigates properties of proflavine and brings out its current status based on overall merits and demerits. Review was carried out starting from late 1800s to 2017 about all aspects of proflavine. We have accessed digital libraries in University of Cambridge, Oxford University, Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology through their institutional repository software. Popular open source solutions like DSpace, EPrints, Digital Commons, Fedora Commons, Islandora and Hydra were included. Proflavine finds many applications including as an anti microbial agent and often used as a topical agent. This compound denatures bacterial DNA leading to lysis of bacteria. Due to its intercalating property it affects host DNA, which has potential chances to induce skin cancer and other malignancies. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) released by proflavine play a crucial role in denaturing host DNA. Proflavine can penetrate beyond epidermal and dermal structures and accumulate in cell nuclei. In human cell culture proflavine is known to be taken up by many kinds of cells and is concentrated in the nuclei. Our studies revealed that despite its oncogenic potential, proflavine currently finds its applications in therapeutic, diagnostic and in research not alone in developing countries but also in developed countries. Proflavine exhibited wide potent activity against various groups of microorganisms. After exposure in human skin proflavine alters the structure of epidermal DNA strands leading to mutation. Many industrial workers, researchers, health care professionals are exposed to proflavine in enormous amounts daily through oral, respiratory and cutaneous routes. We conclude that even though proflavine has strong antimicrobial and other uses due to its carcinogenic nature, we recommend that it is time to rethink the use of this compound and to search for good alternative replacement.

Perceptions and Level of ICT Competencies: A Survey of Librarians at Public Sector Universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

This paper intends to explore the level of ICT competencies, and the training needs for updating these competencies among library professionals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It also looks at the various approaches utilized by these professionals for acquiring ICT skills and problems faced by them in this regard. Descriptive survey research method has been used for conducting this study. The population for this study comprised of 105 library professionals working in the 14 public sector universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The study revealed that the status of ICT competencies among library professionals in the region is unsatisfactory. Self-study is their main avenue of acquiring ICT skills and insufficient staff in the libraries is their main problem. Further training in establishing & maintaining a digital library software and using institutional repository software is their foremost training need for updating their ICT competencies. The results can be utilized by library administrators to organize regular ICT training programs to train library staff in modern ICT resources as per their needs and to eradicate any hurdle in updating staff ICT competencies. This study provides valuable insight into the level of the ICT competencies of library professionals in KPK, and provides a framework for the development of ICT competencies of library professionals in KPK and elsewhere. It would lead to the provision of qualitative and standardized library services to the patrons and would enable library professionals to benefit from modern ICT resources in the field of library and information science.
