Spatial pattern and determinants of institutional delivery in Ethiopia: Spatial and multilevel analysis using 2019 Ethiopian demographic and health survey.

In Ethiopia, despite the progress that has been made to improve maternal and child health, the proportion of births occurring at health institutions is still very low (26%), Which significantly contribute to a large number of maternal death 412 deaths/100,000 live births. Therefore, this study intended to determine spatial pattern and factors affecting institutional delivery among women who had live birth in Ethiopia within five years preceding survey. Data from 2019 Ethiopian demographic and health survey were used. Taking into account the nested structure of the data, multilevel logistic regression analysis has been employed to a nationally representative sample of 5753 women nested with in 305 communities/clusters. A significant heterogeneity was observed between clusters for institutional delivery which explains about 57% of the total variation. Individual-level variables: primary education (OR = 1.8: 95% CI: 1.44-2.26), secondary education (OR = 3.65: 95% CI: 2.19-6.1), diploma and higher (OR = 2.74: 95% CI: 1.02-7.34), women who had both Radio and Television were 4.6 times (OR = 4.6; 95% CI: 2.52, 8.45), four and above Antenatal visit (AOR = 2.72, 95% CI:2.2, 3.34), rich wealth index (OR = 2.22; 95% CI: 1.62-2.99), birth interval for 18 to 33 months (OR = 1.8; 95% CI: 1.19, 2.92), and women who space birth for 33 and above months (OR = 2.02; 95% CI: 1.3, 3.12) were associated with institutional delivery. Community level variables, community high proportion of antenatal visit (OR = 4.68; 95% CI: 4.13-5.30), and Region were associated with institutional delivery. A clustered pattern of areas with low institutional delivery was observed in Ethiopia. Both individual and community level factors found significantly associated with institutional delivery theses showed the need for community women education through health extension programs and community health workers. And the effort to promote institutional delivery should pay special attention to antenatal care, less educated women and interventions considering awareness, access, and availability of the services are vital for regions. Process Evaluation of Facility Delivery Services in Northwest Ethiopia: In the Case of Public Health Centers.

Even if giving birth at health facility is vital for both the mothers and their newborns, the coverage of institutional delivery in Ethiopia is very low (50%). In that regard, several studies have shown the possible factors of low delivery service uptake from the patients' side, but evidences on delivery services at the health centers are meagre. This study aimed to evaluate the process of delivery services in public health centers of northwest Ethiopia. A case study evaluation design with an embedded mixed-method was used to evaluate institutional delivery in public health centers of Gondar city. Dimensions from the access (availability, accommodation, and acceptability) and implementation fidelity (compliance) frameworks were used. A total of 363 mothers, 32 document reviews, 32 direct observations, and 17 key informants were included. The qualitative data were transcribed, translated, coded, and analysed using a thematic analysis approach. The overall process of institutional delivery services was measured based on pre-determined judgmental criteria. The overall facility delivery process was 75.1%, judged by availability (78.5%), compliance (70.6%), accommodation (68.8%), and acceptability (80.2%) of services. Essential medicines in some of the health centers were stockout, insufficient delivery rooms and inadequate training of health workers on obstetric and newborn care were observed. Using partograph and examining vulval-perineal region for possible laceration during intrapartum period were less practiced. Residence (AOR: 0.13, 95% CI: 0.06-0.30), ANC 1 to 3 visits (AOR: 2.65, 95% CI: 1.05-6.74) and ANC4+ (AOR: 5.57, 95% CI: 2.09, 14.84) were factors affected acceptability of delivery services. Major constraints were in the accommodation of delivery services which needs a holistic effort from all stakeholders. Therefore, implementors with other stakeholders shall improve delivery rooms, facilitate training, and provide parenteral drugs as part of the obstetric and newborn care to improve the facility delivery services in Ethiopia.

Determinants and spatial distribution of institutional delivery in Ethiopia: evidence from Ethiopian Mini Demographic and Health Surveys 2019

BackgroundOver the past few decades, maternal and child mortality had drawn the attention of governments and policymakers. Institutional delivery has been among the implementations needed to reduce maternal and child mortality. The fact that the problem was persisted intensified studies to research for more factors. Thus, the current study was intended for further analyses of EMDHS to identify the magnitude, spatial patterns, and predictors of institutional delivery.MethodsA cross-sectional survey data from EMDHS 2019 was analyzed involving 5488 reproductive-age women regarding institutional deliveries. We presented descriptive statistics using mean, standard deviations, and proportions. To check the nature of the distribution of institutional delivery, we applied the global Moran’s I statistics. Getis-Ord Gi statistics was applied to detect spatial locations, and we applied spatial interpolation to predict unknown locations of institutional delivery using the Ordinary Kriging method. Kulldorff’s SatScan was also applied to identify the specific local clustering nature of institutional delivery using the Bernoulli method. We applied multilevel binary logistic regression for the scrutiny of individual and community-level factors. We applied P < 0.25 to include variables in the model and P < 0.05 to declare associations. AOR with 95% CI was used to describe variables.ResultsThe prevalence of institution/facility delivery was 2666.45(48.58%) in the survey. The average number of children was 4.03 ± 2.47, and most women in this survey were in the age range of the 25-29 years (31.84%) and 30–34 years (21.61%). Women who learned primary education (AOR = 1.52; 95% CI 1.20–1.95), secondary education (AOR = 1.77; 95% CI 1.03–3.07), and higher education (AOR = 5.41; 95% 1.91–15.25), while those who can read and write sentences (AOR = 1.94; 95% 1.28–2.94), Rich (AOR = 2.40 95% CI 1.82–3.16), and those followed 1–2 ANC (AOR = 2.08; 95% CI 1.57–2.76), 3 ANCs (AOR = 3.24; 95% CI 2.51–418), and ≥ 4 ANCs (AOR = 4.91; 95% CI 3.93–6.15) had higher odds of delivering at health institutions.ConclusionThe institutional delivery was unsatisfactory in Ethiopia, and there were various factors associated differently across the different regions. Pastoralist regions showed high home delivery than institutions which invites further interventions specific to those regions. Factors like age, highest education level achieved, preceding birth interval, literacy status, wealth status, birth order, regions, and rural residences were all affected institutional delivery so that interventions considering awareness, access, and availability of the services are vital.

Effect of checklist based box system interventions on improving institutional delivery among reproductive age women in Northwest Ethiopia: generalized structural equation modeling

BackgroundPrevious studies have shown that there is low utilization of institutional delivery in Ethiopia, as well as various factors contributing to this low utilization. Notably, there is paucity around interventions to improve institutional delivery. Hence, this study examines the effectiveness of checklist-based box system intervention on improving institutional delivery and to investigate the association through which the intervention is linked to institutional delivery.MethodThe study used data from a larger trial, on the effectiveness of checklist-based box system intervention on improving maternal health service utilization. In the intervention arm, mothers received regular community-level pregnancy screening and referral, service utilization monitoring boxes, drop-out tracing mechanisms, regular communication between health centers and health posts, and person-centered health education for mothers. This study used the existing government-led maternal health program as a control arm. A total of 1062 mothers who gave birth one-year before the survey were included in the final analysis. A difference-in-difference estimator was used to test the effectiveness of the intervention. Generalized structural equation modeling was used to examine the direct and/ indirect associations between the intervention and institutional delivery.ResultAmong participants, 403 (79.5%) mothers from intervention and 323 (58.2%) mothers from control clusters gave birth at health facilities. The result of the study revealed a 19% increase in institutional delivery in the intervention arm (19, 95%CI: 11.4-27.3%). In this study the pathway from checklist-based box system intervention to institutional delivery was mainly direct - (AOR = 3.32, 95%CI: 2.36-4.66), however, 33% of the effect was partially mediated by attendance of antenatal care four visits (AOR = 1.39, 95%CI: 1.02-1.92). The influence of significant others (AOR = 0.25, 95%CI: 0.15-0.43) and age (AOR = 0.03, 95%CI: 0.01- 0.09) had an inverse relation with institutional delivery.ConclusionThe implementation of a checklist-based box system significantly increased institutional delivery utilization, both directly and indirectly by improving antenatal care four attendance. A larger-scale implementation of the intervention was recommended, taking the continuum of care approach into account.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03891030, Retrospectively registered on 26 March, 2019.

Multilevel analysis of factors associated with utilization of institutional delivery in Ethiopia.

Background:The maternal mortality rate in poor nations remains unacceptably high. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with institutional delivery usage.Methods:The data came from the Ethiopian mini demographic and health survey, which was conducted in 2019. This study comprised 3978 women of reproductive age who had given birth within the previous 5 years. To uncover significantly linked parameters associated with institutional delivery, we used a multilevel logistic regression model. Statistical significance was declared at p < 0.05, and we assessed the strength of association using adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals.Results:More than half of the women (53.67%) among 3978 women with last birth had their babies delivered in a health facility. In the multilevel logistic regression analysis, women in age group 45–49 (AOR = 2.43, 95% CI: 1.280, 4.591), primary educational level (AOR = 2.21, 95% CI: 1.864, 2.625, secondary and above education level (AOR = 6.37, 95% CI: 4.600, 8.837), being Muslim (AOR = 2.57, 95% CI: 1.245, 2.166), women who visited ANC service four up to seven times (AOR = 2.75, 95% CI: 2.175, 3.473), women visited ANC service eight times and above (AOR = 3.295% CI: 1.685, 6.050), women who reside in middle wealth index (AOR = 1.57, 95% CI: 1.273, 1.950), and rich wealth index (AOR = 3.43, 95% CI: 2.782, 4.225) were more likely to give birth at health institution compared to their counterparts. Furthermore, women being in rural area (AOR = 0.34, 95% CI:- 0.283, 0.474) and protestant women (AOR = 0.1.57, 95% CI: 0.479, 0.852) were less likely to deliver at health institution.Conclusions:Ethiopia still has a low level of institutionalized delivery. Institutional delivery in Ethiopia should be improved through context-specific and personalized programs, such as educating women and enhancing access to ANC services.

Institutional delivery in Ethiopia: Alternative options for improvement

Maternal mortality is a critical healthcare system quality indicator and is measured by the number of maternal deaths for every 100,000 live births. Despite huge achievements towards reducing maternal mortality, the prevalence of maternal death remains unacceptably high in developing countries including Ethiopia. A recent study in Ethiopia reported a maternal mortality ratio of 857/100,000 live births. This high maternal mortality rate is partly due to the low Antenatal care (ANC) utilization and the institutional delivery rate. Which intern is associated with sociocultural, economic, health facility accessibility, and healthcare delivery-related factors. The risk of maternal and child death increases with home delivery which could be averted through the primary or secondary prevention of complications during delivery by skilled attendants. Institutional delivery can be promoted through practical strategies including empowering women via community education, increasing access to transportation, and staffing and capacity building.

Factors affecting institutional delivery in Ethiopia: A multi-level analysis

BackgroundChildbirth is a complex process that requires the safest care to prevent maternal and neonatal complications. The proportion of births occurring at health institutions in Ethiopia is still below expected (26%), which significantly contribute to a large number of maternal deaths. Hence, identifying factors affecting institutional delivery is crucial. ObjectivesThe main objective of this study was to assess factors affecting institutional delivery among women who had a live birth in Ethiopia within five years preceding Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey 2016. MethodThe 2016 Ethiopian demographic and health survey data were used to identify factors associated with institutional delivery. As the data has nested structure, a multilevel logistic regression model was used for analysis by taking a nationally representative sample of 7193 women nested within 645 clusters. ResultA significant heterogeneity was observed between clusters for institutional delivery which explains about 53.5% of the total variation. Individual-level variables: higher-level women education (AOR = 5.74; 95% CI 2.7–9.73), parity 5, and more (AOR = 0.39; 95% CI 0.32–0.49) and the number of ANC visit four and greater visit (AOR = 6.74; 95% CI 4.11–11.04) were significantly associated with institutional delivery. Community-level variables, Community media exposure (AOR = 1.80; 95% CI 1.31–2.4) and community antenatal coverage (AOR = 1.97; 95% CI 1.18–3.30) had a significant effect on institutional delivery. ConclusionThe effort to promote institutional delivery should pay special attention to multiparous and less educated women.

Individual and community-level determinants, and spatial distribution of institutional delivery in Ethiopia, 2016: Spatial and multilevel analysis.

Institutional delivery is an important indicator in monitoring the progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 3.1 to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births. Despite the international focus on reducing maternal mortality, progress has been low, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), with more than 295,000 mothers still dying during pregnancy and childbirth every year. Institutional delivery has been varied across and within the country. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the individual and community level determinants, and spatial distribution of institutional delivery in Ethiopia. A secondary data analysis was done based on the 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) data. A total weighted sample of 11,022 women was included in this study. For spatial analysis, ArcGIS version 10.6 statistical software was used to explore the spatial distribution of institutional delivery, and SaTScan version 9.6 software was used to identify significant hotspot areas of institutional delivery. For the determinants, a multilevel binary logistic regression analysis was fitted to take to account the hierarchical nature of EDHS data. The Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC), Median Odds Ratio (MOR), Proportional Change in Variance (PCV), and deviance (-2LL) were used for model comparison and for checking model fitness. Variables with p-values<0.2 in the bi-variable analysis were fitted in the multivariable multilevel model. Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with a 95% Confidence Interval (CI) were used to declare significant determinant of institutional delivery. The spatial analysis showed that the spatial distribution of institutional delivery was significantly varied across the country [global Moran's I = 0.04 (p<0.05)]. The SaTScan analysis identified significant hotspot areas of poor institutional delivery in Harari, south Oromia and most parts of Somali regions. In the multivariable multilevel analysis; having 2-4 births (AOR = 0.48; 95% CI: 0.34-0.68) and >4 births (AOR = 0.48; 95% CI: 0.32-0.74), preceding birth interval ≥ 48 months (AOR = 1.51; 95% CI: 1.03-2.20), being poorer (AOR = 1.59; 95% CI: 1.10-2.30) and richest wealth status (AOR = 2.44; 95% CI: 1.54-3.87), having primary education (AOR = 1.47; 95% CI: 1.16-1.87), secondary and higher education (AOR = 3.44; 95% CI: 2.19-5.42), having 1-3 ANC visits (AOR = 3.88; 95% CI: 2.77-5.43) and >4 ANC visits (AOR = 6.53; 95% CI: 4.69-9.10) were significant individual-level determinants of institutional delivery while being living in Addis Ababa city (AOR = 3.13; 95% CI: 1.77-5.55), higher community media exposure (AOR = 2.01; 95% CI: 1.44-2.79) and being living in urban area (AOR = 4.70; 95% CI: 2.70-8.01) were significant community-level determinants of institutional delivery. Institutional delivery was low in Ethiopia. The spatial distribution of institutional delivery was significantly varied across the country. Residence, region, maternal education, wealth status, ANC visit, preceding birth interval, and community media exposure were found to be significant determinants of institutional delivery. Therefore, public health interventions should be designed in the hotspot areas where institutional delivery was low to reduce maternal and newborn mortality by enhancing maternal education, ANC visit, and community media exposure.

Determinants of institutional delivery service utilization in Ethiopia: a population based cross sectional study

BackgroundThe incidence of maternal mortality remains unacceptably high in developing countries. Ethiopia has developed many strategies to reduce maternal and child mortality by encouraging institutional delivery services. However, only one-fourth of women gave birth at health facility, in the country. This, this study aimed to identify individual level factors and to assess the regional variation of institutional delivery utilization in Ethiopia.MethodsData were obtained from the 2016 Ethiopian demographic and health survey. In this study, a total of 7174 reproductive age women who had birth within five years were included. We fitted multilevel logistic regression model to identify significantly associated factors associated with institutional delivery. A mixture chi-square test was used to test random effects. Statistical significance was declared at p < 0.05, and we assessed the strength of association using odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals.ResultThe level of institutional delivery was 38.9%. Women’s who had focused antenatal care (FANC) visit (AOR = 3.12, 95% CI: 2.73–3.56), multiple gestations (AOR = 2.06, 95% CI: 1.32–3.21, and being urban residence (AOR = 7.18, 95% CI: 5.10–10.12) were more likely to give birth at health facility compared to its counterpart. Compared to women’s without formal education, giving birth at health facility was more likely for women’s who had primary education level (AOR = 1.77, 95% CI: 1.49–2.10), secondary education level (AOR = 3.79, 95% CI: 2.72–5.30), and higher education level (AOR = 5.86, 95% CI: 3.25–10.58). Furthermore, women who reside in rich (AOR = 2.39, 95% CI: 1.86–3.06) and middle (AOR = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.36–2.03) household wealth index were more likely to deliver at health facility compared to women’s who reside poor household wealth index. Moreover, this study revealed that 34% of the total variation in the odds of women delivered at health institution accounted by regional level.ConclusionThe level of institutional delivery in Ethiopia remains low. Context specific and tailored programs that includes educating women and improving access to ANC services has a potential to improve institutional delivery in Ethiopia.

Determinants of Institutional Delivery in Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study

Background & aim: Government of Ethiopia is promoting institutional delivery despite the fact that there are a high number of home deliveries in the country mainly in hard-to-reach areas. Choice of institutional delivery is vital for the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortalities. The present study aimed to investigate the determinants of institutional delivery in Ethiopia. Methods: This cross-sectional survey was conducted on 11023 women (age range: 15-49 years) who delivered in the preceding five years before the 2016 Ethiopian demographic health survey in Ethiopia from January 18, 2016 to June 27, 2016. The primary outcome variable was institutional delivery. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software (version 20). The multivariate logistic regression was used to identify variables that had a significant association with institutional delivery (P<0.05). Results: Institutional delivery was 4.36 times higher in women with secondary education (OR: 4.36; 95% CI: 3.12-6.09). In addition, it was threefold higher among the subjects who were the residents of urban areas (OR: 3.26; 95% CI: 2.19-4.35). Institutional delivery was higher among women who had antenatal care (ANC) visits (OR: 1.81; 95% CI: 1.58-2.07) and watched television at least once a week (0R: 1.90; 95% CI: 1.35-2.66). Based on the wealth index, the wealthiest subjects were 2.61 times more likely to deliver in health institutions (OR: 2.61; 95% CI: 1.95-3.50). Conclusion: Having higher educational levels, being wealthy, residing in urban areas, having ANC visits at least once, and watching television at least once a weak were considered as important determinants for the choice of institutional delivery.

Factors associated with institutional delivery in Ethiopia: a cross sectional study

BackgroundIn spite of the promotion of institutional delivery in Ethiopia, home delivery is still common primarily in hard-to-reach areas. Institutional delivery supported to achieve the goal of reducing maternal and neonatal mortality in Ethiopia. The objective of this study is to assess the determinants of institutional delivery in Ethiopia.MethodsCross sectional survey was conducted in 11 administrative regions of Ethiopia. The Ethiopian demographic and health survey data collection took place from January 18, 2016, to June 27, 2016. The study subjects were 11,023 women (15–49 years old) who gave birth in the preceding 5 years before 2016 Ethiopian demographic health survey. This representative data was downloaded from Demographic Health Survey after getting permission. The Primary outcome variable was institutional delivery. The data was transferred and analyzed with SPSS Version 20 statistical software package.ResultsOf 11,023 mothers, 2892 (26.2%) delivered at a health facility and 8131 (73.8%) at home. Women with secondary education were 4.36 times more likely to have an institutional delivery (OR: 4.36; 95% CI: 3.12–6.09). Institutional delivery was higher among women who were resided in urban areas by three fold (OR: 3.26; 95% CI: 2.19–4.35). Women who visited ANC (Antenatal care) were about two times more likely to choose institutional delivery (OR: 1.81; 95% CI: 1.58–2.07). Respondents who watch television at least once a week was two times more likely to experience institutional delivery than those who did not watch at all (0R: 1.90; 95% CI: 1.35–2.66). The wealthiest women were 2.61 times more likely to deliver in an institution compared with the women in the poorest category (OR: 2.61; 95% CI: 1.95–3.50).ConclusionWomen having higher educational level, being richest, residing in urban area, visiting antenatal care at least once, and frequent exposure to mass media were factors associated with institutional delivery. Improving access to education and health promotion about obstetrics and delivery through mass media will increase the uptake of institutional delivery.

Prevalence and Determinants of Institutional Delivery Service Uptake among Women in Farta District, Northwest Ethiopia

Background: Although institutional delivery is the corner stone to reduce maternal death and improve child health, institutional delivery in Ethiopia is the lower in the world where only 26% of women attained skilled delivery. This study aimed to identify factors determininging the utilization of delivery services among women in Farta District. Method: A community based cross sectional study design was conducted from March 1-30, 2017. Multistage sampling was used to select women. Data were collected from a sample of 779 women using structured questionnaire, entered in to EPI-info version 7.2, and analysed by SPSS Version 23. Frequencies, percentages and summary statistics were computed to describe the study population. Logistic regression was computed to identify the associated predictors with skilled delivery service utilization. Statistical level of significance was declared at p<0.05. Results: The prevalence of institutional delivery was 64.4% (95% CI=61, 67.4). A multivariable logistic regression model indicated that family size, availability of transport, planned pregnancy, information about place of delivery, participation of women monthly health conference (PWMHC), information about exempted service, and having antenatal care (ANC) follow up during their last pregnancy were found to be significantly associated with institutional delivery service utilization. Conclusion: The attendance of women for institutional delivery care is good but below the national plan. Maternal care information, women monthly conference and behavioural change for planning pregnancy should be taken due attention to mobilize mothers towards skilled birth attendance. Allocation of more resource to the program and increasing availability of transportation during labor is also commendable. Improving mother’s ANC follow up attendance in resource limited regions is warmly suggested.

Multilevel analysis of individual and community level factors associated with institutional delivery in Ethiopia.

BackgroundImproving maternal health is one of the eight millennium development goals to reduce maternal mortality (MM) by three quarters between 1990 and 2015. Institutional delivery is considered to be the most critical intervention in reducing MM and ensuring safe motherhood. However, the level of maternal morbidity and mortality in Ethiopia are among the highest in the world and the proportion of births occurring at health facilities is very low. This study examined the individual and community level factors associated with institutional delivery in Ethiopia.MethodsData from the 2011 Ethiopian demographic and health survey were used to identify individual and community level factors associated with institutional delivery among women who had a live birth during the 5 years preceding the survey. Taking into account the nested structure of the data, multilevel logistic regression analysis has been employed to a nationally representative sample of 7757 women nested with in 595 communities.ResultsAt the individual level; higher educational level of the women (AOR = 3.60; 95 % CI 2.491–5.214), women from richest households (AOR = 1.74; 95 % CI 1.143–2.648) and increased ante natal care attendance (AOR = 4.43; 95 % CI 3.405–5.751) were associated with institutional delivery. Additionally, at the community level; urban residence (AOR = 4.74; 95 % CI 3.196–7.039), residing in communities with high proportion of educated women (AOR = 1.71; 95 % CI 1.256–2.319) and residing in communities with high ANC utilization rate (AOR = 1.55; 95 % CI 1.132–2.127) had a significant effect on institutional delivery. Also region and distance to health facility showed significant association with institutional delivery. The random effects showed that the variation in institutional delivery service utilization between communities was statistically significant.ConclusionBoth individual and community level factors are associated with institutional delivery service uptake. As a result, further research is needed to better understand why these factors may affect institutional delivery.

Birth outcomes among laboring mothers in selected health facilities of North Wollo Zone, Northeast Ethiopia: A facility based cross-sectional study

Background: Poor birth outcomes are common health problems everywhere in the world. Hence institutional delivery in Ethiopia is very low, improving birth outcomes through recent evidence remained critical. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of poor birth outcomes and associated factors among women who delivered in selected health facilities of North Wollo Zone. Methods: A facility based cross-sectional survey was conducted on 295 laboring mothers from May to June 2009. Interviewer administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. Patient’s chart was reviewed to retrieve medical information. Anthropometry of the neonate was taken by standard measurement tools. Data were analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS), version 15. Binary logistic regression analyses were used to identify predictors of poor birth outcomes. P-value ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: All the data resulted from 295 laboring mothers were made part of the analyses. A total of 266 (90.2%) laboring mothers gave live birth. A quarter, 68 (23.1%) of the laboring mothers had a poor birth outcome. The common adverse outcomes were intrauterine fetal death (IUFD, preterm, and birth defects with the proportion of 29 (42.6%), 22 (32.4%), and 3 (4.4%), respectively). Mother whose husband’s occupation was merchant (AOR = 4.4, 95% CI: 1.0-19.0), driver (AOR = 4.2, 95% CI: 1.12-15.76), & women who were illiterate (AOR = 4.0, 95% CI: 1.2-13.5), primary school completed (AOR = 4.3, 95% CI: 1.3-13.8), non-antenatal care visited (AOR = 3.4, 95% CI: 1.12-10.2), rural residence, (AOR = 2.6, 95% CI: 1.11-5.80), & mother’s HIV status, (AOR = 34.2, 95% CL 5.6, 207.0) were independent predictors of poor birth outcomes. Conclusions: Poor birth outcomes were very common in the study area where low birth weight accounted for much of all adverse pregnancy outcomes. Occupation, residence, antenatal care visit, income, maternal education and HIV status were determinants of poor birth outcomes. Accessing antenatal care in early trimester, mild physical work, maternal education to secondary level and above should be encouraged.
