General Biology in the Soviet Union, 1964

Russian works in general microbiology, even in the foremost journals, lack the comprehensiveness and the rigid experimental and deductive discipline characteristic of Western world publications. This is attributable, for the most part, to publishing standards, a tendency to piecemeal papers, a preponderant emphasis on a superficial natural history approach, and a preoccupation with applied objectives. My on-thescene visits have edified me: publications are misleading indices of the caliber and competence of many Soviet microbiologists. The Russians are proud of their heritage in general microbiology, and the names of G. A. Nadson, A. Issachentko, V. N. Omeliansky, and S. N. Winogradsky are revered. The foremost organization of its kind in the USSR, the Academy of Sciences' Institute of Microbiology in Moscow, is housed in a five-story, typically drab, blockhouse structure which, along with the Institute of Physical Chemistry, is situated in bleak surroundings adjacent to a huge municipal power plant. Combustion Institute Medals

At its Ninth International Symposium on Combustion held at Cornell University in August, the Combustion Institute presented medals to three research scientists. George B. Kistiakowsky, professor of chemistry at Harvard, received the Bernard Lewis Gold Medal “for brilliant research in the field of combustion, particularly on detonation phenomena”; Tucker Carrington of the National Bureau of Standards was awarded the Silver Combustion Medal for an outstanding paper presented at the Eighth Symposium on Combustion in 1960; Friedrich Wilhelm Jost, director of the Institute for Physical Chemistry of the University of Göttingen, was presented the Alfred C. Egerton Gold Medal for “his continuing and encouraging contributions” to the field of combustion.

Migration and Distribution of Radioactive Sulfur in Compounded Rubber

Abstract In the production of vulcanized rubber articles it is necessary to take into account the possibility of migration of sulfur from one ply into another. It is well-known that alterations in the concentration of sulfur and accelerators in a stock, taking place as a result of diffusion processes, may lead to alteration in the quality of the rubber. In particular, if in formulating mixes for multiply rubber-fabric articles we take into account the migration processes of the accelerating and vulcanizing agents, it becomes possible to prevent the occurrence of various defects through nonuniform vulcanization. Once again, if the unvulcanized stock is stored in piles, migration means that alterations in the concentration of sulfur and accelerators cannot be ruled out. Another factor closely connected with the quality of the resulting articles is the uniformity of distribution of the sulfur when added to a compounded stock. Thus the study of migration processes takes on considerable practical importance. One promising method of investigation of diffusion processes in vulcanized rubber may be the use of tagged atoms. With it we can effectively and rapidly investigate migration processes at different stages of manufacture. The significance of this method for the investigation of the mechanism of the action of accelerator and vulcanization agents has already been pointed out in the literature. We used the tagged atom method in the investigation described below … a joint investigation by the rubber department of the Kiev Technological Institute of Light Industry, the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and the “Krasnyi Rezinshchik” and “Ukrkabel” works.

Theory of the physical adsorption of gases and vapors and adsorption properties of adsorbents of various natures and porous structures

1. The present state of the potential theory of adsorption of gases and vapors developed in the laboratory of sorption processes of the Institute of Physical Chemistry, Academy of Sciences, USSR, is presented. 2. The possibilities of the theory for describing and predicting adsorption equilibria and differential heats of adsorption are demostrated. 3. The theory is applicable to the adsorption of gases and vapors on adsorbents of various chemical natures and porous structures with the condition that the dispersion component plays the determining role in the adsorption interaction.

DETERMINING CORROSION AGGRESSIVENESS OF THE ATMOSPHERE

The following article concerns an apparatus constructed to study the basic principles of atmospheric corrosion both under laboratory conditions and for open‐air tests. Written by workers at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences and the I. V. Stalin Steel Institute, it has been translated from the Russian by Aluminium Laboratories Ltd., of Banbury.

The Uppsala Electromagnet

The electromagnet at the Institute of Physical Chemistry, Uppsala, is described. It is capable of producing a field of 68.5 kilo-oersteds with pole-face of 0.5 cm. diameter and a gap of 0.2 cm.

Nobel Prize for Chemistry : Prof. Arne Tiselius

THE recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry this year is Prof. Arne Tiselius, who is well known to protein chemists in Great Britain. For many years he worked in the Physical Chemistry Institute of Prof. Svedberg at Uppsala, and became one of its most outstanding members. Recently a chair in biochemistry was created for him and a new Institute is in the course of construction. His greatest Work, and that for which he is most widely known, was in the development of an apparatus for the electrophoretic analysis of biological substances. The apparatus, which now bears his name, has made possible accurate measurements of the electrical properties of proteins and has been most extensively applied both as a test of protein purity and to characterize the components of more complex systems. In this connexion, the application to normal and pathological sera is of great clinical importance. The apparatus is undoubtedly one of the most powerful tools ever developed in the field of protein chemistry. More recently, Prof. Tiselius has returned to the study of adsorption analysis, a subject which interested him in his earlier research years. Since the introduction of chromatography by Tswett, the method has been employed and developed on somewhat empirical lines. Prof. Tiselius and his school have studied the underlying principles involved in this type of separation and have developed elegant apparatus for the adsorption analysis of colourless substances. Many scientific men who have worked in his laboratory have benefited greatly by his patient application to their problems and by his wide knowledge. All who know him well will agree that this latest honour is indeed well deserved.

Recent ultracentrifugal investigations on cellulose and cellulose derivatives

AbstractA review is given of physicochemical studies on cellulose and cellulose derivatives made during the years of World War II at the Institute of Physical Chemistry, Uppsala, Sweden. Emphasis has been laid on the principles of the subject and the review deals essentially with some investigations on nitrocellulose by the present author. An outline of the problems of the cellulose chemistry of today serves as an introduction. The principles of molecular weight determinations from Svedberg's equation are briefly mentioned, and the difficulties in the extrapolation of sedimentation constants to zero concentration are discussed. The problem of what sort of average molecular weight is obtained from Svedberg's equation is treated subsequently and methods for determination of distributions from combinations of osmotic and sedimentation experiments described. A table comparing five different sorts of average molecular weights for a numbe of nitrocelluloses is discussed.

Dr. W. Steiner

DR. WERNER STEINER, born 1896 at Cologne, died after a brief illness on September 10 at Durham. From 1926 onwards he was Prof. M. Bodenstein's assistant in the Institute of Physical Chemistry at Berlin and in charge there of the teaching and research work in spectroscopy. He published some thirty valuable papers on this and related subjects, several of them in English journals. After leaving Germany in 1933 he worked for a while on similar lines at Cambridge in the laboratories of the late Prof. T. M. Lowry. In 1936 he accepted the position of a science master at the Gordonstoun School in Morayshire, and in January 1941 at the Durham School. Here, as well as in his University career, he gave of his best. Besides science his main interest was divinity, and his last contribution was to a theological journal.
