Study on the Influence of Nozzle Setting Density of Water Mist System on the Fire Extinguishing Performance of Residential Fires

There are no standards for water mist systems in Taiwan. When installing a water mist system, the instructions in the installation manual are relied upon. However, this study uses simulation software (Fire Dynamics Simulator, FDS) to explore the impact of sprinkler head density on house fires. When considering the impact of fire extinguishing performance, it was found that if the maximum installation distance between nozzles is set according to the user manual based on economic benefits, the fire extinguishing effect will be less than ideal. Therefore, this study conducted simulations by increasing the nozzle density to analyze and discuss the nozzle setting density

Recently, economic downturn and the era of ultra-high oil prices caused by the global pandemic, demand for the installation of wood boilers in home or rural houses is increasing as a means of reducing heating costs in winter. In general, wood boilers, which have been used a lot in factories and warehouses, not only reduce the burden of heating costs, which account for a large part of household spending in winter, but also are simple and economical, so the demand is gradually increasing. However, due to the nature of the fuel, it is difficult to control the fire power, and there is no accurate installation manual, so there is a high possibility of fire, such as overheating of the stovepipe and splashing on nearby combustibles. In addition, there are many problems that were not initially expected during the manufacture and installation of the wood boiler due to legal defects. This study aims to analyze fire hazards according to communication structure, material, and boiler room construction materials by conducting fire re-experiments based on fire cases by wood boilers, and provide basic data for safe installation and use of fire boilers.

Local ancestry prediction with PyLAE.

SummaryWe developed PyLAE, a new tool for determining local ancestry along a genome using whole-genome sequencing data or high-density genotyping experiments. PyLAE can process an arbitrarily large number of ancestral populations (with or without an informative prior). Since PyLAE does not involve estimating many parameters, it can process thousands of genomes within a day. PyLAE can run on phased or unphased genomic data. We have shown how PyLAE can be applied to the identification of differentially enriched pathways between populations. The local ancestry approach results in higher enrichment scores compared to whole-genome approaches. We benchmarked PyLAE using the 1000 Genomes dataset, comparing the aggregated predictions with the global admixture results and the current gold standard program RFMix. Computational efficiency, minimal requirements for data pre-processing, straightforward presentation of results, and ease of installation make PyLAE a valuable tool to study admixed populations.Availability and implementationThe source code and installation manual are available at https://github.com/smetam/pylae.

DIANA-mAP: Analyzing miRNA from Raw NGS Data to Quantification.

microRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs (~22 nts) that are considered central post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression and key components in many pathological conditions. Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies have led to inexpensive, massive data production, revolutionizing every research aspect in the fields of biology and medicine. Particularly, small RNA-Seq (sRNA-Seq) enables small non-coding RNA quantification on a high-throughput scale, providing a closer look into the expression profiles of these crucial regulators within the cell. Here, we present DIANA-microRNA-Analysis-Pipeline (DIANA-mAP), a fully automated computational pipeline that allows the user to perform miRNA NGS data analysis from raw sRNA-Seq libraries to quantification and Differential Expression Analysis in an easy, scalable, efficient, and intuitive way. Emphasis has been given to data pre-processing, an early, critical step in the analysis for the robustness of the final results and conclusions. Through modularity, parallelizability and customization, DIANA-mAP produces high quality expression results, reports and graphs for downstream data mining and statistical analysis. In an extended evaluation, the tool outperforms similar tools providing pre-processing without any adapter knowledge. Closing, DIANA-mAP is a freely available tool. It is available dockerized with no dependency installations or standalone, accompanied by an installation manual through Github.

Successful Transitions to Remote Assessments and Technology Installations due to COVID-19: The I-CONECT Project

I-CONECT is a randomized controlled clinical trial to examine the impact of social interaction delivered via video-chat on cognitive function (clinicaltrials.gov number: NCT02871921, project website: www.I-CONECT.org ). We aimed to enroll 320 community-dwelling socially isolated older adults (age >=75 years). The recruitment of participants has started in 2018 and was ongoing when COVID-19 pandemic began. Video chat and telephone-based social interaction interventions did not change during COVID-19. However, new recruitment and cognitive assessments, which require in-person contact and deployment and retrieval of video chat devices in participant homes, were suspended due to the nature of our study population (i.e., older age, higher likelihood of comorbidities). Recently we were able to successfully switch to complete remote assessments including 1) telephone-based cognitive assessments using T-COG (Telephone Cognitive Assessment battery), and 2) contactless delivery of our study devices (Chrome books and electronic pill boxes) for subject self-installation. Our creative approach to self-installations includes color coded pictures and an easy-to-follow installation manual, accompanied by remote instruction and support via telephone. This poster introduces our remote assessment and installation protocol and participant and technical support team feedback regarding this new contactless protocol. This presentation provides useful guidance for future studies considering completely remote assessment and telemedicine approaches.

The Relationship between Surface Roughness, Capillarity and Mineral Composition in Roofing Slates

Roofing slates are a category of building stones which have a very distinctive feature: High fissility, which allows them to be split into tiles that are thin, regular and large. There are several types of roofing slates, depending on their lithology. The four main lithologies are low-grade slates, slates stricto sensu, phyllites, and mica-schist. Occasionally, other rocks such as quartzites, serpentinites, or shales, can also be used as roofing slates. Roofing slates must ensure waterproofing, a quality that depends on both the rock and the installation. Installation must therefore take into account parameters such as the pitch, orientation, and overlap of the tiles in order to avoid capillarity, which could jeopardize waterproofing. These parameters are usually included in installation manuals. However, despite the fact that roughness is a parameter known to have an important effect on capillarity, it has never been thoroughly analyzed. Roughness varies depending on the type of roofing slate, but installation manuals do not take this factor into account. This study has measured surface roughness in different types of roofing slates using a laser scanner and determined the capillarity values along and across the grain direction. Furthermore, the role of dissolved salts in capillarity has likewise been studied.

An Empirical Study of Accessibility to Multi-shopping Mall for The Mobility Impaired

The aim of this research is to provide empirical evidence for accessibility to commercial spaces for the mobility impaired. To be specific, field study and experimental study on stroller and wheelchair users’ access to major facilities of multi-shopping mall through public transportation were conducted. The study methods are as follows: first, this study investigates legal compliance of facilities for the mobility impaired, based on a field investigation; second, this study examines the practical usability of the relevant facilities for ordinary persons, stroller users and hand-operated wheelchair users respectively. The study results are as follows: first, convenience facility installation manuals for the disability and universal design guidelines were relatively well applied to multi-shopping facilities; second, it was empirically proven that although it was not impossible for the mobility impaired to approach multi-commercial facilities, it was very inconvenient and unreasonable. The mobility impaired had poor travel distances and travel times, compared to ordinary persons; third, in relation to access to multi-shopping mall, there was a lack of practical considerations for stroller users. In addition, there were many studies and regulations for wheelchair users, but stroller users are in the blind spot and many users must endure the irrationality.

Optimal inspection and replacement strategy for 145 kV gas-insulated switchgear

We deal with an optimization problem of planning a maintenance strategy for 145 kV gas-insulated switchgear and apply reliability-centered maintenance approach to find an efficient and effective strategy. In a three-step sequential process, we use failure mode effects and criticality analysis to define the critical failure modes that cause the major failures of 145 kV gas-insulated switchgear, select the maintenance significant items to remove the major failure modes, and finally apply logic tree analysis to assign the appropriate maintenance task to each critical failure modes in the system. We then compare the assigned maintenance tasks with existing tasks in the installation, operation, and maintenance manuals developed in the system design and development phase. The assigned maintenance tasks in this study are compared with those in the system design and development phase by simulation, and a simple heuristic method is proposed to find optimal solutions.

Artificial intelligence moving serious gaming: Presenting reusable game AI components

This article provides a comprehensive overview of artificial intelligence (AI) for serious games. Reporting about the work of a European flagship project on serious game technologies, it presents a set of advanced game AI components that enable pedagogical affordances and that can be easily reused across a wide diversity of game engines and game platforms. Serious game AI functionalities include player modelling (real-time facial emotion recognition, automated difficulty adaptation, stealth assessment), natural language processing (sentiment analysis and essay scoring on free texts), and believable non-playing characters (emotional and socio-cultural, non-verbal bodily motion, and lip-synchronised speech), respectively. The reuse of these components enables game developers to develop high quality serious games at reduced costs and in shorter periods of time. All these components are open source software and can be freely downloaded from the newly launched portal at gamecomponents.eu. The components come with detailed installation manuals and tutorial videos. All components have been applied and validated in serious games that were tested with real end-users.

CloudSPAdes: assembly of synthetic long reads using de Bruijn graphs.

MotivationThe recently developed barcoding-based synthetic long read (SLR) technologies have already found many applications in genome assembly and analysis. However, although some new barcoding protocols are emerging and the range of SLR applications is being expanded, the existing SLR assemblers are optimized for a narrow range of parameters and are not easily extendable to new barcoding technologies and new applications such as metagenomics or hybrid assembly.ResultsWe describe the algorithmic challenge of the SLR assembly and present a cloudSPAdes algorithm for SLR assembly that is based on analyzing the de Bruijn graph of SLRs. Imagine a factory environment where installation or maintaining of machines could be carried out via an iPad. Clumsy installation manuals and PC-based 3D simulation tools would become obsolete in favour of a portable version of reality straight from CAD diagrams. This could be possible with the new player in the industrial software arena: augmented reality (AR). Automotive manufacturer in Europe is using some aspect of AR and VW was one of the first to adopt it. They have been using AR in their prototyping process for ten years, using the technology combined with a measuring arm to analyse steps in the design process.

EClog: A handheld eddy covariance logging system

A new eddy covariance logging (EClog) system has been developed based on a handheld computer. The logging program, written in C language, reads the digital data from the sonic anemometer and writes it to a CompactFlash card, at the same time showing instantaneous data, means and fluxes on the screen. The program, running under the Linux operating system, proved to be stable and flexible, and consumed little power (0.7 W). These attributes make the system suitable for application in remote areas during long periods of time. The software and installation manuals are made available on the web under free ‘public license’ agreement.

Separating the Effects of Warning and Information Distribution Practices: A Case of Cascading Responsibility

In this study we examine how participants allocate blame after reading one of several variants of a fictitious product-use scenario that describes a construction worker who is injured after falling through an acrylic panel used in the construction of greenhouses. The safety practices and policies exhibited by the manufacturer, distributor, construction company owner and worker were cast either in a positive or negative light. Among the variables studied was the quality of the product warning and the methods used to distribute safety materials (e.g., installation manual) to the end user (panel installers). The results showed that blame allocation fell “downstream”, where most blame fell on the party that failed to distribute the safety information to the next step of the chain. The effects of distribution breakdown on blame was moderated by the type of warning provided by the manufacturer in that greater blame was placed on the negligent party when a good warning is used, and part of the blame for the accident was shifted to the manufacturer when it provided a poor warning, regardless of where the breakdown occurred. The implications of these results for consumers, legal professionals, and researchers are discussed.

RBS/ERD simulation problems: Stopping powers, nuclear reactions and detector resolution

A new program has been developed for the graphical analysis of data from Rutherford Back scattering (RBS) and Elastic Recoil Detection (ERD) material analysis experiments. The program can evaluate experiments using any incident ion, at any energy, for any planar target. It incorporates the full stopping power database of the SRIM/TRIM ion beam programs. All scattered ions and recoiling target atoms are followed out of the target and through any filtering absorbers (ERD absorber foils and foils on detector windows). Straggling is included using any of five optional straggling theories. Commonly used nuclear reaction cross-sections are automatically incorporated. By comparison with experimental data, weaknesses in the theoretical basis of RBS/ERD simulations become apparent. These will be discussed with emphasis on stopping powers, detector resolution, target setup and nuclear reaction cross-sections.
