Controlling the instabilities in the radial Hele-Shaw cell

Our world is surrounded by various instability. Fluid instability is one of the emerging and interesting topics to study fluid behaviour. Fluid instability may develop when fluid flows through a porous medium. A similar kind of fluid instability is also developed by fluid flow in narrow slit. This paper mainly focuses on characteristic of fluid instability in Hele-Shaw cell under influence of intended disturbance and methods to control the same. In Hele-Shaw flow, low viscous fluid is allowed to flow in a high viscous fluid, placed in between two flat parallel plates separated by the narrow gap. Instability established during this fluid flow creates morphological patterns called viscous fingering (microfractals). In this paper, authors introduced parameters viz. protrusions, holes, and slots on plates and the introduction of two high viscous fluids that affect microfractals. A method is introduced to get the microfractals of the desired shape in this paper.

Effect of quasi-periodic gravitational modulation on the convective instability in Hele-Shaw cell

The aim of the present paper is to examine the effect of a quasi-periodic gravitational modulation on the onset of convective instability in Hele-Shaw cell. The quasi-periodic modulation considered here consists in a modulation having two incommensurate frequencies. This study is an extension of a previous work by Aniss et al. [Asymptotic study of the convective parametric instability in Hele-Shaw cell, Phys. Fluids 12 (2) (2000) 262–268] in which only a periodic gravitational modulation was considered. We have shown that for Pr = O ( 1 ) or Pr ⪢ 1 , the gravitational modulation has no effect on the convective threshold as expected. However, for Pr = O ( ε 2 ) , it turns out that a modulation with two incommensurate frequencies has a stabilizing or a destabilizing effect strongly depending on the frequencies ratio.

Magnetic fluid labyrinthine instability in Hele-Shaw cell with time dependent gap

The free surface instability of a magnetic fluid in the Hele-Shaw cell with a time dependent gap is theoretically and numerically studied. The numerical algorithm is based on the boundary integral equation technique previously developed. Numerical results illustrate the role of magnetic forces in the instability—they diminish the selected wavelength of the interface perturbations, lead to more pronounced tip splitting events, and select the mode by which the droplet restores the circular shape at large thickness of the gap, when the role of the capillary forces is larger.

Asymptotic study of the convective parametric instability in Hele-Shaw cell

This paper concerns a linear study of the convective parametric instability in the case of a Newtonian fluid confined in a Hele-Shaw cell and submitted to a vertical periodic motion. The gradient of temperature, applied to the fluid layer, is either in the same direction that gravity or in the opposite one. An asymptotic analysis shows that the Hele-Shaw approximation leads to two linear formulations depending on the order of magnitude of the Prandtl number. For these two asymptotic cases, the convective threshold is determined. It turns out that in the Hele-Shaw geometrical configuration, parametric oscillations have no influence on the criterion of stability when the Prandtl number is in the order of the unity or very superior to the unity. However, when the Prandtl number is small than unity, the parametric oscillations can affect the convective instability threshold.
