Parasites of Astyanax lacustris (Pisces, Characiformes) from Brazilian streams.

Astyanax lacustris is a small characid fish widely distributed in Brazil, with fast-growing and omnivorous feeding habits. Although the species presents economic and ecological importance, little is known about its parasitological fauna in stream environments. This study aimed to characterize the parasitic fauna of A. lacustris in two streams in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Fifty-two specimens of A. lacustris were collected, 22 from the Carolina stream (Lower Iguaçu River) and 30 from the Carreira stream (Upper Paraná River), in July and September 2018. In both streams, there was a low richness of parasites, and the structure of the parasitic community was predominantly composed of monogeneans. These findings may be associated with the gregarious behavior of the host species. Moreover, the low occurrence of endohelminths, may be associated with the fact that in streams, the energy flow is low, and depends directly on the input of allochthonous matter, which favors the formation of shelters for the establishment of macroinvertebrates, which represent important sources of food for the ichthyofauna, and may act as intermediate and paratenic hosts of parasites. These environments require further studies to support conservation measures aimed at maintaining the balance of ecological relationships in these preserved ecosystems.

Recent changes in major and trace elements in sediments from a remote mountain lake (6th Triglav Lake) in the Julian Alps, NW Slovenia

We collected a sediment core from the 6th (6J) Triglav Lake, a remote mountain lake in NW Slovenia, and analysed it for 25 elements, using k0-instrumental neutron activation analysis (k0-INAA). For Hg, we used cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS). Data were analysed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). PCA indicated several distinct groups of elements and sediment core samples. Ca distribution was entirely different from all other sediment components. Ba, Br, Hg, Sb and Zn were associated with organic matter (OM), with Hg showing the strongest affinity to OM. As, Cr, Fe and U formed a group of redox-sensitive elements. Two events that occurred ca. 1915 and in the 1940s/1950s, were identified in the core. They were associated with increased inputs of allochthonous material into the lake, and significantly affected the stratigraphic distributions of all elements. Some trace elements, such as As, Hg and Zn, are probably effectively retained in the catchment, whereas Cr tends to be readily exported from the catchment. Atmospheric deposition affected not only elements of anthropogenic origin (As, Ba, Br, Hg, Sb, Zn and Cr) that started to increase after the 1970s, but also those of terrestrial origin (Ca, Fe, Na). Introduction of fish into the lake in 1991 and the subsequent increase in primary production, affected the distribution of Ca and elements that are redox-sensitive and/or associated with OM (As, Ba, Fe, Sb, U, Zn). Fe minerals in uppermost 6J sediments have a strong influence on the distribution of several trace elements. As and Zn closely tracked Fe, whereas Sb was likely released after oxidation. Climate change could also have enhanced inputs of elements from the catchment, but such changes were likely overwhelmed by the effects of increased eutrophication.

Environmental archives of atmospheric Hg deposition – A review

Environmental archives offer an opportunity to reconstruct temporal trends in atmospheric Hg deposition at various timescales. Lake sediment and peat have been the most widely used archives; however, new records from ice, tree rings, and the measurement of Hg stable isotopes, are offering new insights into past Hg cycling. Preindustrial Hg deposition has been studied over decadal to millennial timescales extending as far back as the late Pleistocene. Exploitation of mercury deposits (mainly cinnabar) first began during the mid to late Holocene in South America, Europe, and Asia, but increased dramatically during the Colonial era (1532–1900) for silver production. However, evidence for preindustrial Hg pollution is restricted to regions directly downwind or downstream of cinnabar or precious metal mining centers. Excluding these areas, there has been an approximately four-fold increase in atmospheric deposition globally over the industrial era (i.e., since 1800–1850), though regional differences exist, especially during the early 20th Century. Lake sediments, peat, ice, and tree rings are all influenced by (and integrate) a range of processes. For example, lake sediments are influenced by atmospheric deposition, sediment focusing, and the input of allochthonous material from the watershed, peat records reflect atmospheric deposition and biotic uptake, ice cores are a record of Hg scrubbed during precipitation, and tree rings record atmospheric concentrations. No archive represents an absolute record of past Hg deposition or concentrations, and post-depositional transformation of Hg profiles remains an important topic of research. However, natural archives continue to provide important insight into atmospheric Hg cycling over various timescales.

Plant and sediment properties in seagrass meadows from two Mediterranean CO2 vents: Implications for carbon storage capacity of acidified oceans

Assessing the status of important carbon sinks such as seagrass meadows is of primary importance when dealing with potential climate change mitigation strategies. This study examined plant and sediment properties in seagrass meadows (Cymodocea nodosa (Ucria) Asch.) from two high pCO2–low pH Mediterranean vent systems, located at Milos (Greece) and Vulcano (Italy) Islands, providing insights on carbon storage potential in future acidified oceans. Contrary to what has been suggested, carbon content (both inorganic and organic) and its surficial accumulation decreased at high pCO2–low pH in comparison with controls. The decrease in inorganic carbon may result from the higher solubility of carbonates due to the more acidic conditions. At Vulcano, the seagrass properties (e.g., leaf area, biomass) appeared negatively affected by environmental conditions at high pCO2–low pH conditions and this may have had a detrimental effect on the organic carbon content and accumulation. At Milos, organic carbon decreased at high pCO2–low pH conditions, despite the increase in seagrass aboveground biomass, leaf length and area, probably as a consequence of site-specific features, which need further investigation and may include both biotic and abiotic factors (e.g., oligotrophic conditions, decreased sedimentation rate and input of allochthonous material). Results suggest that, in contrast to previous predictions based exclusively on the expected positive response of seagrasses to ocean acidification, carbon storage capacity of the seagrass C. nodosa may not increase at high pCO2-low pH conditions. This study emphasizes the need to investigate further the potential alteration in the climate mitigation service delivered by seagrass meadows in acidified oceans.

Responses of riffle beetle assemblages to deforestation in a semi-deciduous Atlantic Forest remnant.

Deforestation affects freshwater assemblages since aquatic organisms are dependent on the structure of the riparian vegetation. To investigate the responses of riffle beetles (Elmidae) to deforestation, this study assessed the structure of riffle beetle assemblages found in streams running through a large and well-preserved semi-deciduous Atlantic Forest remnant in Southern Brazil and in nearby deforested areas. Additionally, the effects of different substrate types (litter and stone) on the assemblages were assessed. Riffle beetle assemblages showed a remarkably distinct structure between forested and deforested areas. Lower abundance occurred in deforested streams. Indicator genera of forested streams were detected (e.g.,Macrelmis and Microcylloepus), while a generalist genus (Heterelmis) predominated in deforested streams. Substrate type did not affect the composition of riffle beetle genera, although higher abundance was found in litter. Our results are likely associated with changes in the vegetation type and levels and quality of allochthonous material input between forested (native and higher levels) and deforested (exotic and lower levels) streams, which are directly linked to the feeding habits of riffle beetles. Thus, our study reveals an interesting potential of riffle beetles as indicators of stream ecological integrity in semi-deciduous areas of the Atlantic Forest biome.

The effects of Oncorhynchus mykiss culture on the limnological conditions of Hanna Reservoir, Isfahan, Iran

This study was conducted at the Hanna Reservoir located in the southwest of Isfahan Province. According to this study, chemical analyses were conducted to evaluate the magnitude and variations of COD, BOD5, O2, NH3+ and NO2-concentrations in the Hanna Reservoir. In the headwaters the magnitude values of BOD5, COD and early morning oxygen minima were quite identical to the recommended optimum levels. However the concentrations of :::union:::ized ammonia in winter and spring and the concentration of nitrite in summer and autumn exceeded the allowable levels cited in different literature and might have exerted some growth retarding or lethal effects on the fish population. Water quality, zooplankton, benthos and sediments were monitored at sites of 20 m depths to determine the effects of rainbow trout cage culture on the lake environment. Oxygen depletion occurred in the vicinity of the farms due to respiration of the farmed fish. Zooplankton had stronger nutritional value in all six ecosystems of the Hanna Reservoir, and in seasons during which fish feed on these nutritional sources, breeding occurs with higher efficiency. Benthic invertebrates were rare at all six sites of the lake. The sediments below the cages had a pH and organic matter comparable to areas of the lake receiving the natural input of allochthonous material.

The allochthonous material input in the trophodynamic system of the shelf sediments of the Gulf of Tigullio (Ligurian Sea, NW Mediterranean)

The organic allochthonous material input in the benthic system of a NW Mediterranean shelf area was studied using a three-pronged approach, focusing firstly on the evaluation of the sedimentary stable isotope ratios and organic matter (OM) composition, then on the OM recycling processes performed by the microbial organisms, and finally on the potential trophic relationships between the macrobenthic organisms. The highest allochthonous signal, indicating continental input, was observed within the 50-m isobath, while at the 80-m isobath the marine signal was higher, pointing to a rather low continental influence approximately 5 km from the shore. Heavier rainfall, often generating abrupt allochthonous inputs by river outfalls, led to a wider spread of fine sediment particles. Carbohydrates were the compounds that best represented the continental input and these compounds were associated with potential recycling activities by microbiota, pointing to the entry of these C-containing allochthonous materials into the microbial food web. The macrofaunal deposit-feeders used sedimentary OM characterised by a continental signature as a food source, although the isotopic ratios of the organisms also pointed to selective feeding on materials that had a marine signature, especially at our offshore sampling stations. Predators fed on deposit- or suspension-feeders, with a potential selection of the latter during the highest inputs of continental materials occurring in winter.

A seasonal comparison of prokaryote numbers, biomass and heterotrophic productivity in waters of the KwaZulu-Natal Bight, South Africa

The KwaZulu-Natal Bight is a shallow indentation of the eastern seaboard of South Africa, characterised by a narrow (45 km wide) extension of the continental shelf, with a shelf break at about 100 m. It has a complex hydrography: the waters of the bight are derived from the fast-flowing, southward-trending Agulhas Current, which is fed mostly by the tropical and subtropical surface waters of the South-West Indian Ocean subgyre, which are generally oligotrophic in nature, notably depleted in reduced nitrogen and phosphate except at river mouths and during periodic upwelling of deeper nutrient-rich water. Despite this, the bight is believed to be relatively productive, and it is suggested that efficient nutrient recycling by prokaryotes may sustain primary productivity efficiently, even in the absence of new nutrient inputs. Here we have measured bacterial numbers, biomass and heterotrophic productivity during summer and winter in conjunction with phytoplankton standing stock and factors that influence it. Bacterial distribution closely matched phytoplankton distribution in surface waters, and was highest close to the coast. Bacterial standing stocks were similar to those of oligotrophic systems elsewhere (0.5–5.0 × 105 cells ml–1; 1 × 10–8 to 1.25 × 10–7 g C ml–1) and increased in association with the development of phytoplankton blooms offshore and with inputs of allochthonous material by rivers at the coast. Heterotrophic productivity in summer was lowest in the far south and north of the bight (0.5 × 10–10 g C ml–1 h–1) but higher close to the shore, over shallow banks, and in association with increased phytoplankton abundance over the midshelf (1.0–3.5 × 10–9 g C ml–1 h–1). There were marked seasonal differences with lower bacterial standing stocks (5 × 104 to 2 × 105 cells ml–1; 4–5 × 10–9 to 1–2 × 10–8 g C ml–1) and very low bacterial productivity (4 × 10–11 to 1 × 10–10 g C ml–1 h–1) in winter, probably resulting from lowered rates of primary productivity and dissolved organic matter release as well as reduced riverine allochthonous inputs during the winter drought.

Fen ecosystem responses to water‐level fluctuations during the early and middle Holocene in central Europe: a case study from Wilczków, Poland

This paper presents a palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the Wilczków fen (central Poland). The fen developed in an inactive valley at the onset of the Holocene (~11 ka BP) and peat accumulation lasted until 5.7 ka BP. Multi‐proxy reconstructions were made on the basis of palaeobotanical, cladoceran, chironomid, beetle and geochemical analyses. A Kohonen self‐organizing map (SOM, unsupervised artificial neural network) of the biotic sequence distinguished four stages of fen history. Stage X1 (11.0–10.7 ka BP) was relatively wet and cool. Organic matter started to accumulate but the habitat conditions remained unstable. Moss, sedge and fern communities then developed. Sedimentary changes reveal an intensive groundwater supply at that time. Numerous and diverse chironomid and cladoceran subfossils indicate nearly permanent aquatic conditions. During stage Y1 (10.6–9.2 ka BP) conditions were dry and the upper peat layer desiccated. Cladocera nearly disappeared whereas chironomids were represented by semi‐terrestrial and predatory (Tanypodinae) species. Conditions started to be more reducing. All the remaining samples belonged to the interweaving stages X2 and Y2. Stage Y2 (mostly 9.1–7.3 and 6.0–5.7 ka BP) was also dry but humidity increased towards the top. Oxidizing conditions occurred and the pH became more alkaline, favouring Cladium mariscus. The basin received mostly allochthonous matter input at that time. Stage X2 (mostly 6.8–6.1 ka BP) was humid and warm. The groundwater supply remained low but there was an increase in precipitation, changing local conditions to ombrotrophic. Species‐rich chironomid and cladoceran communities were associated with temporary pools. Finally, conditions returned to those characteristic of stage Y2. The presented reconstruction documents long‐term abiotic and biotic changes determined by water supply, including groundwater outflow, which have rarely been detected at a multi‐proxy scale. We show that inactivated valley fens are sensitive to climate‐driven hydrological fluctuations. Kohonen neural networks appear to be a promising method for analysing variability in multi‐proxy data.

Inter- and intra-annual variations of pCO2 and pO2 in a freshwater subtropical coastal lake

Inland waters emit significant amounts of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, but tropical and subtropical lakes are underrepresented in current assessments. Here we present results of a 6-year study of the dynamics of surface partial pressures of carbon dioxide and oxygen (pCO2 and pO2) in a subtropical lake, Lake Peri, Brazil, to determine how temperature, rainfall, and wind moderate surface concentrations. Both pCO2 and pO2 tended to increase during the transitions between seasons when rainfall increased, with pCO2 averaging 2.5–3-fold higher than atmospheric values. Occasionally during autumn/winter, pCO2 similarly increased and pO2 decreased. We infer that the increases in both gases during the transition periods resulted from increasing inputs of allochthonous material into the lake. Those in winter resulted from near-bottom intrusions that intermittently reach the depth of measurement. In autumn/winter, pCO2 was 3-fold higher (average 1700 μatm) compared to spring/summer (550 μatm), whereas changes in pO2 did not have a clear seasonal pattern. Overall median net CO2 evasion was 11 mg C m−2 d−1. Variability in the extent of rainfall and the associated high intra- and inter-annual variability in CO2 and CO2 emissions are in part controlled by atmospheric processes related to the South American Monsoon System and to El Niño Southern Oscillation cycles.

Effects of forest conversion on the assemblages’ structure of aquatic insects in subtropical regions

The effects of forest conversion to agricultural land uses on assemblages of aquatic insects were analyzed in subtropical streams. Organisms and environmental variables were collected in six low-order streams: three streams located in a forested area, and three in areas converted to agricultural land uses. We expected that the aquatic insects’ assemblage attributes would be significantly affected by forest conversion, as well as by environmental variables. Streams in converted areas presented lower species richness, abundance and proportion of sensitive insect taxa. The ANOSIM test evidenced strong difference in EPT assemblage structure between streams of forested and converted areas. The ISA test evidenced several EPT genera with high specificity to streams in forested areas and only one genus related to streams in converted areas. Thus, the impacts of the conversion of forested area to agricultural land uses have significantly affected the EPT assemblages, while environmental variables were not affected. We suggest that the effects detected can be influenced by two processes related to vegetation cover: i) lower input of allochthonous material, andii) increased input of fine sediments in streams draining converted areas.

<b>Limnology of a lateral lagoon system connected to a Neotropical reservoir (Rosana reservoir, São Paulo/Paraná, Brazil)

The aim of this work was to perform a comparative analysis of four lateral lagoons and of the main channel of the Rosana Reservoir (Paranapanema river), southeast Brazil. The fieldwork was conducted during dry and rainy periods of 2004 and 2005. The analyzed variables were chlorophyll a, turbidity, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, dissolved nutrients (ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and silicate), Secchi disk transparency, suspended solids, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and electrical conductivity. Intense summer rainfall provided a high input of allochthonous material into the system, resulting in conspicuous changes - high turbidity and nutrient concentrations and low transparency, especially in the reservoir channel. The cluster analysis showed a clear segregation between the reservoir sampling site and the lagoons. The results evidenced the strong influence of regional factors on the limnological structure and functioning of these environments. The alternation between dry and rainy periods changes significantly the characteristics of the main channel and lagoons, mainly due to the contribution of tributaries. Spatially, the system exhibited a remarkable limnological variability. This shows the need to consider these distinct habitats in regional conservation strategy, presently focused on terrestrial habitats.

Longitudinal variation of periphytic algal community structure in a tropical river

The present study evaluated the influence of abiotic factors on the periphytic algal community structure under different environmental conditions. Six sampling sites were established along the course of the Sao Mateus River: two upstream of the city of Sao Mateus (E1, E2), two along the city (E3, E4), and two downstream of the city (E5, E6). Biotic and abiotic samplings were performed every week, in September and October 2010, totaling four collections. The periphyton was collected from roots of Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms. removed by scraping with brushes and jets of distilled water, fixed and preserved with formalin 4 % (qualitative analyses) and with acetic lugol 5 % (quantitative analysis). Higher richness of taxa and total density of periphytic algal community were registered in the sampling sites along and downstream of the city of Sao Mateus, with a greater contribution of Bacillariophyceae (richness) and Cyanophyceae (total density) in all sampling sites. The periphytic algal density was influenced by nutrients (especially nitrogen) and turbidity, as evidenced by the CCA. Thus, it is suggested that the input of allochthonous matter, especially from human activities (intensive fish farming and discharge of domestic and industrial wastewaters) change the water quality (as evidenced by the PCA), as well as communities of periphytic algae present.

<b>Spatial variation of periphyton structural attributes on <i>Eichhornia crassipes</i> (Mart.) Solms. in a tropical lotic ecosystem</b> - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i3.17879

This study evaluated the influence of physical, chemical and physico-chemical variables of water on the biomass of periphyton community and verified the differences between six sampling sites over the course of São Mateus river: two upstream of the city of São Mateus, Espírito Santo State (E1, E2), two along (E3, E4), and two downstream of the city (E5, E6). The periphyton was collected from roots of Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms. Samplings were undertaken every week in September and October 2010. The periphyton biomass was estimated through chlorophyll ‘a’, biovolume, dry mass, ash-free dry mass, and ash. Higher values of chlorophyll ‘a’ were found at E1, while the total biovolume featured greater values in E4 and E3. Regarding the values of periphyton dry mass, the inorganic fraction was higher at sites along and downstream of the city of São Mateus. The variation of periphyton biomass was influenced by the availability of nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) and turbidity, as evidenced by the CCA. The results suggest that the input of allochthonous material, especially from human activities (fish farming and discharge of domestic and industrial wastewater), has changed the water quality (as pointed out by the PCA), as well as the communities present.

Effect of the Environmental Factors on the Caloric Content of Benthic and Phytophilous Invertebrates in Neotropical Reservoirs in the Paraná State, Brazil

AbstractThe complexity of the relations between the organisms and the environment are reflected through the energy content. So we tested the hypothesis on body energy content variation in invertebrates and its relation with some environmental factors (season, habitat type, trophic status and trophic guild). We expected higher energy values for phytophilous fauna, rainy season, in reservoirs with higher trophic levels and for herbivorous invertebrates. The results showed the influence of seasonality and trophic status of the reservoir on the energy content of invertebrates, which was higher in the rainy season and in the mesotrophic reservoirs, due to the input of allochthonous material during this season, confirming our initial prediction. A higher caloric content was recorded for carnivorous and detritivorous invertebrates. The differences between the trophic guilds were primarily related to the opportunistic feeding behavior, which may be considered as one of the main factors controlling the energy flow of benthic and phytophilous invertebrates. Provenance composition and features of geological evolution of the Late Vendian foreland basin of the Timan orogen

The provenance composition and geological evolution of different segments in the distal zone of the Late Vendian foreland basin of the Timan orogen were deciphered on the basis of sequence stratigraphic reconstructions and precision geochemical data on the Upper Vendian fine-grained terrigenous rocks from the Southeast White Sea region, Vychegda, Verkhnekama, and Shkapovo-Shikhan basins, and the Kvarkush-Kamennogorsk and Bashkirian meganticlinoriums. The Upper Vendian of the Southeast White Sea region is subdivided into four sequences: Agma, Solza, Zimnie Gory, and Erga. The tracing of sequence boundaries and lateral facies associations from the Southeast White Sea Region to the South Urals made it possible to identify the main stages of the evolution of sedimentary filling of the foreland basin: (I) shallow water epiplatformal basin, (II) isolated basin, (III) lowstand system tract, and (IV) progradation of delta platforms. Position of data points of the Upper Vendian shales, silty mudstones, and mudstones plotted in the diagrams Th-La, Ni-Cr, GdN/YbN-Eu/Eu*, Sc-Th/Sc, La/Sm-Sc/Th, and Co/Hf-Ce/Cr, together with their REE systematics and data on Nd model ages indicates that the Proterozoic, including Neoproterozoic rocks of the Timan thrust-folded belt served as the main source for fine aluminosiliciclastic material in the distal zones of the Timan foreland basin. Obtained results are consistent with the concept that the Vendian stage of the evolution of the Eastern European platform is related to the intense input of allochthonous material in its peripheral area owing to the activation of orogenic processes in the adjacent mobile belts and allow us to significantly specify the paleogeographical reconstructions.

Contribution of transparent exopolymer particles to carbon sinking flux in an oligotrophic reservoir

Transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) compose an important pool of particulate organic matter (POM) in aquatic systems. However, no studies of TEP contribution to C export to sediment exist for freshwaters. We quantify the contribution of TEP to C sinking fluxes in an oligotrophic reservoir (Quentar, Southern Spain) by monitoring TEP in the water column and TEP, particulate organic carbon (POC) and dry weight in sedimentation traps. TEP sinking fluxes ranged from 0.73 to 183.23 mg C m−2 day−1 and from 0.51 to 177.04 mg C m−2 day−1 at the surface and at the bottom layer, respectively. These values represent that, over an annual basis, 5.59 Ton TEP-C (over 61.32 Ton POC) are exported, on an average, from the water column to the sediment of Quentar reservoir. TEP concentrations (average = 48.0 μg XG eq l−1) were lower than the scarce data reported for freshwaters. No significant relationships between TEP and Chl a concentrations or BA were observed. Average value for daily sedimentation flux (6.63 g Dry Weight m−2 day−1) in the study reservoir was higher than that documented for low productive natural aquatic ecosystems as a consequence of the high amount of allochthonous material input characterizing reservoirs. TEP contributed to C export to sediment with a value that range from 0.02 to 31%. Our results show that even in man-made systems, which are predominantly controlled by allochthonous inputs, TEP may be relevant for explaining POM settling fluxes.

Produção de folhiço e fauna associada de macroinvertebrados aquáticos em curso d’água de cabeceira em Floresta Ombrófila do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil

The aim of the study was to verify the temporal variation of allochthonous material input into a stream, and which structures contribute to the organic material pool, as well as to analyze the occurrence of macroinvertebrates associated with the litter. Samples were taken from October, 2004 to October, 2005 in two transects along the riparian zone. At each transect, three sampling stations were chosen. At each one, submersed and suspended collectors (1.5 m above bottom) were installed. Input and retention of coarse benthic organic material were analyzed and classified as flowers and diaspores, (seeds and fruits) and vegetative structures (leaves and branches). There were no statistical differences between input of material in suspended and submersed collectors. Therefore, no statistical differences were verified for exposure time for both the suspended and submersed collectors. Vegetative and seeds and fruits and flowers structures differed in relation to their vegetal composition input for total exposure times for both collectors. Leaves were the most important structure for biomass. Aquatics insects, crustaceans, mussels and worms were the most common macroinvertebrates associated with litter. Insecta-Diptera, mainly Chironomidae – and Oligochaeta were the most abundant taxa associated with the submerged and suspended collectors. The major taxa richness was found in submerged collectors.

Effect of biological soil crusts on soil elemental concentrations: implications for biogeochemistry and as traceable biosignatures of ancient life on land

Biological soil crusts (BSCs) are topsoil biosedimentary structures built by photosynthetic microbes commonly found today on arid soils. They play a role in soil stabilization and the fertility of arid lands, and are considered modern analogues of ancient terrestrial microbial communities. We determined the concentrations of four biogenic and 21 other elements, mostly metals, in surface soils that hosted BSCs, in the soils underneath those crusts, and in proximate but non-crusted surface soils. The samples were from six sites in the Colorado Plateau highlands and the Sonoran Desert lowlands. In spite of the variability in climate and geologic setting, we found statistically significant overall trends of enrichment in biogenic elements and depletion in non-biogenic elements when BSCs were compared with non-crusted soils. The differences between crusted and non-crusted soils were statistically significant at approximately 95% confidence for C, N (enrichments) and for Ca, Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, As, and Zr (depletions). These trends are best explained by the activity of microbes. As expected, no differences in the concentrations of C, N, P, and S were detected between the soils underneath the crusts and the non-crusted soils, but the former showed depletion of non-biogenic elements, indicating that the leaching effect of crust microbes extends downward in the soil. These patterns speak to the need for a sustained input of allochthonous material, possibly dust, to maintain BSC fertility. These elemental patterns can be considered a biosignature that may be preserved in the rock record and might help identify ancient microbial communities on land.

Temporal and spatial trends in the sedimentation process in a canyon-type reservoir (El Gergal, Seville, Spain)

The seasonal and spatial (vertical and horizontal) variations in the magnitude of sestonic fluxes and the chemical composition (C, N, P and organic matter concentrations) of entrapped material have been studied over a year on a monthly basis in El Gergal, a mesotrophic canyon-type reservoir in the south of Spain. The chemical composition of settled particles and of surficial sediment was compared in trying to elucidate the role of some relevant processes like mineralization and resuspension of unconsolidated sediment. A very clear increasing tendency in the magnitude of settling fluxes from the down-reservoir to the up-reservoir zone as a consequence of the prevailing wind direction and of water level fluctuations has been found. Vertical gradients in sestonic rates can mainly be explained by the different contribution of resuspension processes that can be ultimately related to the thermal and hydrologic regime. A comparison of the chemical composition of the total settled matter and of the surficial sediment revealed a predominantly inorganic matrix, which reflects the dominating role of inorganic allochthonous material input.
