Enriching Educational Landscapes

As an arts educator, I spent a month in Bhutan engaging Bachelor of Education students in project-based learning activities aimed at enhancing creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. These activities served as a dynamic capstone to their theoretical literacy unit. I documented students' collaborative efforts and creativity through photos and videos, which have been transformed into eBooks. These resources are now integrated into courses at my Australian university, enriching learning experiences for our culturally diverse student body with authentic examples of cross-cultural project-based learning. The eBooks showcase student outcomes and offer reflective analyses to inform future teaching practices, inspiring innovative and collaborative learning strategies globally. Moreover, these resources contribute to the university's commitment to global education and cultural diversity, demonstrating how experiential learning can transcend geographical boundaries and enrich the educational journey of students promoting global citizenship. To address a broader audience within Bhutan, and globally, the lesson plans and resources I developed to deliver the project-based learning activities, are now available on the Artist in Residence Education Program website. This provides an opportunity for any educator to access and adapt these materials to their own contexts. Teaching in Bhutan highlighted how factors like collectivist culture, religious beliefs, and the Gross National Happiness Index support traditional teaching practices and how complex it is to break down traditional teaching practises and encourage valid creative ways learning. The students greatly enjoyed the new activities and even requested additional lessons. It was rewarding to see them realise their potential for creativity and innovation in teaching, enhancing their approach to learning and self-perception as future educators. In conclusion, understanding sociocultural norms in Bhutan offers a wealth of insights that can inspire and inform academic approaches to teaching in countries with traditional forms of education and limited access to resources.

The Learning Hub – Empowering Remote Rural Communities across India through Blended Learning

This case study explores The Learning Hub, an initiative of the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), which hosts, among many other learning assets, a three-strand learning programme to enhance the quality of life in rural India through innovative blended learning strategies. The programme, delivered by the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme India (AKRSPI), addresses critical issues such as water sanitation, sustainable agriculture, and governance by delivering courses through a combination of video-based online content and in-person facilitation. The study provides a brief analysis of AKF's blended learning approach, and its impact on community resilience, economic development, and social equity.

Online Learning from the Learning Cycle Perspective: Discovering Patterns in Recent Research

We propose a method for automatically extracting new trends and best practices from the recent literature on online learning, aligned with the learning cycle perspective. Using titles and abstracts of research articles published in high ranked educational journals, we assign topic proportions to the articles, where the topics are aligned with the components of the learning cycle: engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration, evaluation, and evolution. The topic analysis is conducted using keyword-based Latent Dirichlet allocation, and the topic keywords are chosen to reflect the nature of the learning cycle components. Our analysis reveals the time dynamics of research topics aligned on learning cycle components, component weights, and interconnections between them in the current research focus. Connections between the topics and user-defined learning elements are discovered. Concretely, we examine how effective learning elements such as virtual reality, multimedia, gamification, and problem-based learning are related to the learning cycle components in the literature. In this way, any innovative learning strategy or learning element can be placed in the landscape of the learning cycle topics. The analysis can be helpful to other researches when designing effective learning activities that address particular components of the learning cycle.

A Low-Measurement-Cost-Based Multi-Strategy Hyperspectral Image Classification Scheme.

The cost of hyperspectral image (HSI) classification primarily stems from the annotation of image pixels. In real-world classification scenarios, the measurement and annotation process is both time-consuming and labor-intensive. Therefore, reducing the number of labeled pixels while maintaining classification accuracy is a key research focus in HSI classification. This paper introduces a multi-strategy triple network classifier (MSTNC) to address the issue of limited labeled data in HSI classification by improving learning strategies. First, we use the contrast learning strategy to design a lightweight triple network classifier (TNC) with low sample dependence. Due to the construction of triple sample pairs, the number of labeled samples can be increased, which is beneficial for extracting intra-class and inter-class features of pixels. Second, an active learning strategy is used to label the most valuable pixels, improving the quality of the labeled data. To address the difficulty of sampling effectively under extremely limited labeling budgets, we propose a new feature-mixed active learning (FMAL) method to query valuable samples. Fine-tuning is then used to help the MSTNC learn a more comprehensive feature distribution, reducing the model's dependence on accuracy when querying samples. Therefore, the sample quality is improved. Finally, we propose an innovative dual-threshold pseudo-active learning (DSPAL) strategy, filtering out pseudo-label samples with both high confidence and uncertainty. Extending the training set without increasing the labeling cost further improves the classification accuracy of the model. Extensive experiments are conducted on three benchmark HSI datasets. Across various labeling ratios, the MSTNC outperforms several state-of-the-art methods. In particular, under extreme small-sample conditions (five samples per class), the overall accuracy reaches 82.97% (IP), 87.94% (PU), and 86.57% (WHU).

Reimagining Learner Engagement Through Flipped Classrooms in the Post COVID-19 Era

The post-COVID-19 era gave rise to the emergence of innovative teaching and learning strategies, which, among others, included flipped classrooms. This article sought to determine whether flipped classrooms are beneficial when online learning material is distributed prior the commencement of the class. Piaget’s (1986) Constructivist Learning Theory underpinned this inquiry. Constructivism is an approach to education that holds that people actively generate their own knowledge and that reality is shaped by the learner's experiences. The interpretive paradigm and a qualitative approach were utilized to collect information through semi-structured interviews with twelve conveniently selected grade 10 teachers. Using a case study design, the researcher could investigate the phenomenon in detail. Findings, which ensued from thematically analysed data, indicated that learners benefit most from pre-class activities as they offer increased participation opportunities as learners engage in discussions in their native languages. Thus, discussions and modelling tasks during in-class activities are learner-centred, with the development of paraphrasing skills, which promote good essay writing skills with minimum plagiarism effects. The author, therefore, recommends that Teachers require ongoing professional development in applying flipped classrooms using advanced learner-centred technological pedagogies, which promote maximum participation in the learning environment.

Artificial intelligence (AI) applications in healthcare and considerations for nursing education

Aim/objectiveTo review the current AI applications in healthcare and explore the implications for nurse educators in innovative integration of this technology in nursing education and training programs. BackgroundThere are a variety of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications currently supporting patient care in many healthcare settings. A nursing workforce that leverages healthcare technology to enhance efficiency and accuracy of patient health outcomes is necessary. Nurse educators must understand the various uses of AI applications in healthcare to equip themselves to effectively prepare students to use the applications. DesignQualitative synthesis and analysis of existing literature. MethodsGenerative AI (ChatGPT) was used to support the development of a list of the current AI applications in healthcare. Each application was evaluated for relevance and accuracy. A literature review to define and understand the use of each application in clinical practice was completed. The search terms “AI” and “Health Education” were used to review the literature for evidence on educational programs used for training learners. ResultsTen current applications of AI in healthcare were identified and explored. There is little evidence that outlines how to integrate AI education into educational training for nurses. ConclusionA comprehensive multimodal educational approach that uses innovative learning strategies has potential to support the integration of AI concepts into nursing curriculum. The use of simulation and clinical practicum experiences to support experiential learning and to offer opportunities for practical application and training. Considerations for ethical use and appropriate critical evaluation of AI applications are necessary.

Innovative Learning Strategies to Enhance Student Motivation and Academic Achievement: A Constructivist Learning Perspective in Islamic Religious Education

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of innovative, constructivist-based learning strategies in enhancing student motivation and academic achievement. The constructivist approach, which emphasizes active, project-based, and collaborative learning, was implemented in a higher education setting to assess its impact on student motivation and academic outcomes. A quasi-experimental research design with treatment and control groups was employed, involving students from various academic programs. Data were collected through questionnaires measuring learning motivation and academic performance before and after the implementation of innovative strategies. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential statistics, including t-tests to compare differences between the treatment and control groups. The findings indicate that the application of constructivist-based innovative learning strategies significantly improves student motivation and academic achievement. Active and project-based learning methods increased student engagement and facilitated better understanding of the material, as reflected in improved academic outcomes. The study also underscores the importance of a supportive learning environment, including the use of digital technology, in fostering the learning process. Limitations of the study include a limited sample size and contextual variables that may influence the results. The study provides recommendations for educational institutions to adopt innovative learning strategies and encourages further research to explore various learning approaches in greater depth

Innovative Learning Strategies for Islamic Religious Education Based on Merdeka Belajar Curriculum in Vocational High Schools

Innovative learning strategies for Islamic Religious Education are needed to improve cognitive abilities, including analysis, application, creation, presentation, and implementation; affective abilities, including appreciation and organization or characterization; and psychomotor abilities, with the perception of the Qur'an and Hadith, which can enrich the vocational needs of students. This qualitative case study research aims to describe and analyze innovative learning strategies for Islamic Religious Education at Mambaul Ulum Vocational High School based on the Merdeka Belajar curriculum. Data collection through interviews, observations, and documentation. Testing the validity of the collected data through triangulation, expert discussions, and member checking. Data analysis using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana methods with data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion. The study showed that the Islamic Religious Education teachers implemented three innovative learning strategies. First, problem-based learning integrates religious concepts with real issues to develop cognitive, affective, and psychomotor abilities. Second, inquiry-based learning through independent investigation and applying religious concepts in everyday life to deepen understanding. Third, flipped classroom combines independent learning at home with classroom discussion activities. Applying three innovative learning strategies has an impact on increasing learning motivation, knowledge of worship, and critical thinking skills. The value of this research lies in the application of learning strategies that connect religious concepts with actual practices to improve the quality of learning in vocational environments. The research findings strengthen constructivism through problem-based, inquiry-based, and flipped classroom theory by showing that active, collaborative, and interactive learning improves understanding and application of learning materials.

ASF-Net: Robust video deraining via temporal alignment and online adaptive learning

In recent times, learning-based methods for video deraining have demonstrated commendable results. However, there are two critical challenges that these methods are yet to address: exploiting temporal correlations among adjacent frames and ensuring adaptability to unknown real-world scenarios. To overcome these challenges, we explore video deraining from a paradigm design perspective to learning strategy construction. Specifically, we propose a new computational paradigm, Alignment-Shift-Fusion Network (ASF-Net), which incorporates a temporal shift module. This module is novel to this field and provides deeper exploration of temporal information by facilitating the exchange of channel-level information within the feature space. To fully discharge the model’s characterization capability, we further construct a LArge-scale RAiny video dataset (LARA) which also supports the development of this community. On the basis of the newly-constructed dataset, we explore the parameters learning process by developing an innovative re-degraded learning strategy. This strategy bridges the gap between synthetic and real-world scenes, resulting in stronger scene adaptability. Our approach exhibits superior performance in three benchmarks and compelling visual quality in real-world scenarios, underscoring its efficacy. Optimalisasi Proses Pembelajaran Mahasiswa PPG Seni Budaya Melalui Implementasi Edukit Berbasis Interactive Surface

This research aims to optimize the learning process of PPG Arts and Culture students through the implementation of Interactive Surface-based education. The methodology used includes needs analysis, design and development of education, as well as evaluation of the effectiveness of its implementation. This education is designed to provide a more interactive and immersive learning experience, using Interactive Surface technology that allows direct manipulation of learning content. The research results showed a significant increase in student engagement and understanding of the learning material. Evaluation through surveys and in-depth interviews confirms that this education is effective in supporting more adaptive and innovative learning strategies. This research makes an important contribution to the development of modern learning tools that are relevant to today's educational needs.

Identification of millet origin using terahertz spectroscopy combined with ensemble learning

It’s crucial for both producers and consumers to accurately trace the origin of millet, given the significant differences in price and taste that exist between millets from various origins. The traditional method of identifying the origin of millet is time-consuming, laborious, complex, and destructive. In this study, a new method for fast and non-destructive differentiation of millet origins is developed by combining terahertz time domain spectroscopy with ensemble learning. Firstly, three machine learning algorithms, namely support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and kernel extreme learning machine (KELM), were used to build different discriminative models, and then the impact of six different preprocessing methods on the models’ classification performance was compared. It was observed that models employing Savitzky-Golay preprocessing exhibited pronounced superiority in accurately determining the millet’s geographical origins. Building upon these findings, the research introduces an innovative ensemble learning strategy, leveraging both topsis and stacking techniques, to harness the collective strengths of the three algorithms. The outcomes of this approach reveal its remarkable capacity to distinguish millets originating from five distinct locations without the necessity for any parameter fine-tuning. The accuracy, F1 score, and Kappa on the prediction set are all 100 %, which significantly outperforms the single model, traditional voting method, and stacking method. The culmination of this study suggests that the integration of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and TOPSIS-Stacking ensemble learning emerges as a promising method for the swift and non-intrusive discrimination of millet geographical origins with remarkable precision.

Interdisciplinary collaboration: addressing global challenges through innovative learning strategies

In this era of globalization, students in Indonesia face increasingly complex challenges in understanding, addressing, and contributing to global issues. However, the existing curriculum often fails to provide adequate perspectives and skills to tackle these global problems. Therefore, this research aims to provide students with a holistic, practical, and relevant learning experience to address global challenges through a Team-Based Project strategy that integrates compulsory courses in higher education with a global citizenship education approach. Cross-curricular collaboration helps students see the interconnectedness of various disciplines, which is essential in addressing complex global issues. Survey results indicate a variation of views among student groups regarding their understanding of global issues. This innovative learning strategy utilizes principles of behaviorist theory, such as stimulus-response, positive reinforcement, and social interaction, to create an engaging, relevant, and responsive learning environment tailored to students' needs. Through involvement in joint projects focused on global issues, students are stimulated to contribute and take concrete actions in seeking solutions and bringing about positive change on a larger scale. Thus, this learning strategy is expected to enhance students' understanding, skills, and commitment to addressing global challenges in the contemporary era.

PAI Teachers' Strategies In Improving Students' Learning Activity In PAI Subjects In Elementary Schools (Case Study Research at SDN 2 Parakan Garokgek, Purwakarta Regency)

This study was motivated by observations showing low interest and activeness of students in participating in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning, which has implications for the achievement of learning objectives that are not optimal. This study explores the strategies Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers to improve student learning activeness in Elementary Schools. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method—data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation studies. Research participants consisted of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers, principals, and homeroom teachers at the school. Data analysis was carried out descriptively and qualitatively to understand the strategies applied by teachers in planning and implementing learning and the factors that influence its success. The study results showed that Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers used various innovative and creative learning strategies to improve student learning activeness, such as discussion methods, group work, and interactive learning media. In addition, this study identified factors that influence the success of learning strategies, including active student involvement, support from the school environment, and teacher competence and creativity in teaching. This study provides theoretical contributions in the form of new knowledge and insights regarding Islamic Religious Education learning strategies in elementary schools and practical benefits for teachers, schools, and educational institutions to improve the quality of learning and student learning activity.

Using a flipped teaching strategy in undergraduate nursing education: students’ perceptions and performance

BackgroundFlipped teaching is an interactive learning strategy that actively engages students in the learning process. Students have an active role in flipped teaching as they independently prepare for the class. Class time is dedicated to discussion and learning activities. Thus, it is believed that flipped teaching promotes students’ critical thinking, communication, application of knowledge in real-life situations, and becoming lifelong learners. The aim of this study was to describe the students’ perception of flipped teaching as an innovative learning strategy. And to assess if there was a difference in students’ academic performance between those who participated in a traditional teaching strategy compared to those who participated in flipped teaching intervention.MethodA quasi-experimental design with intervention and control groups. A purposive sampling technique of undergraduate nursing students was used.ResultsA total of 355 students participated in both groups, and 70 out of 182 students in the intervention group completed the survey. The students perceived a moderate level of effectiveness of the flipped teaching classroom as a teaching strategy. The result revealed that there is a statistically significant difference in the mean students’ scores for the intervention group (M = 83.34, SD = 9.81) and control group (M = 75.57, SD = 9.82).ConclusionFlipped teaching proves its effectiveness in improving students’ learning experience and academic performance. Also, students had a positive perception about flipped teaching as it allowed them to develop essential nursing competencies. Future studies must consider measuring the influence of flipped teaching on students’ ability to acquire nursing competencies, such as critical thinking and clinical reasoning.

The Effectiveness of Immersive Virtual Reality Simulation as an Innovative Learning Strategy for Acquisition of Clinical Skills in Nursing Education: Experimental Design.

Background: A transformation of learning in nursing is necessary to prepare students for developing complex clinical environments. The essential aim of clinical nursing learning is to enhance the integration of theoretical knowledge in the clinical environment by using various innovative strategies, such as immersive virtual reality (VR) simulation to develop a learning process that allows students to gain knowledge and perform skills in a visually attractive way, which enhances the quality and safety of clinical learning through repeated exposure to educational content that supports students' cognitive and psychomotor skills. Objective: This study was aimed at determining the effectiveness of immersive VR simulation as a learning strategy on the acquisition of intramuscular injection skills in nursing education and the performance level of nursing students compared with a physical learning environment (low-fidelity simulation). Materials and Metods: The experimental design (pre-post-test) was used among first-year nursing students (N = 66) (control group = 33, hip model and experimental group = 33, VR simulation) of the summer semester of 2019-2020 in the Faculty of Nursing at Near East University in Cyprus. Results: There is a significant difference between both groups in performance psychomotor skills scores, and the mean was higher in the experimental group (P = 0.002) and a significantly longer period of time than in the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Immersive VR simulation is a supplementary tool and useful teaching-learning strategy for training in nursing education alongside physical laboratory (hip-model and mannequin) and psychomotor skills requiring the ordering of skill steps in teaching, and it provides realistic experiences in a safe environment instead of the unavailability of actual customers in clinical settings.

EXPLORATORY STUDY ON THE USE OF STORY METHODS IN INCREASING STUDENT INVOLVEMENT IN HISTORY LEARNING AT SMAN 1 MEDAN

This research aims to investigate the use of the story method in increasing student involvement in history learning at SMA Negeri 1 Medan. The story method is an approach that utilizes narrative to bring historical content to students in an interesting and engaging way. This research uses a qualitative approach with an exploratory study design. Data was collected through classroom observations, interviews with history teachers, and questionnaires given to students. Data analysis was carried out using content analysis techniques. The research results show that using the story method can increase student involvement in history learning. Students responded positively to the use of narrative in understanding historical content and felt more involved and enthusiastic in the learning process. The implications of this research provide encouragement for history teachers to consider using the story method as an effective learning strategy for increasing student engagement in history lessons. The story method also encourages students to think critically and reflectively. They are invited to see multiple points of view and understand the complexity of historical events, which helps them develop analytical and critical skills. The use of stories creates a more inclusive and enjoyable classroom atmosphere. Students feel more involved and valued, which in turn increases their motivation to study history. However, this research also identified several challenges in implementing the story method, such as the need for additional time to design interesting and relevant story material as well as differences in student learning preferences. However, these challenges can be overcome through collaboration between teachers and support from the school. Overall, this research concludes that the story method is an effective and innovative learning strategy for increasing student involvement in history learning. The recommendation put forward is to continue developing and perfecting this method, as well as providing training and workshops for teachers so that they are more skilled in implementing the story method. In this way, it is hoped that history learning in high schools can become more interesting, interactive and meaningful for students and help them develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of history.

Exploring Biology Students’ Critical Thinking Using Mind Maps

Critical thinking is one of the 21st-century skills that is important for students to have, because this ability is useful for developing knowledge, evaluating and connecting with facts or information from various sources. Critical thinking skills can be trained by implementing innovative learning strategies, including mind maps. This research aims to explore the critical thinking skills of biology students using mind maps. The type of experimental research used is a pre-experimental design. Treatment of research subjects was carried out without a control group. The research was conducted on biology students taking Human Physiology courses. The research results show that students' critical thinking skills are included in the very good category for the interpretation indicator (80.77) and the good category for the analysis, inference, evaluation, explanation and self-regulation indicators (75.00; 72.12; 71.15; 75.00; 74.00). Based on the results, using mind maps in learning helps students improve critical thinking skills.

APPLICATION OF A CONTEXTUAL APPROACH IN HISTORY LEARNING TO ENCOURAGE STUDENTS' CRITICAL THINKING AT SMAN 3 MEDAN

The contextual approach has become the main focus in efforts to improve learning at various levels of education. This study aims to investigate the application of a contextual approach in history learning to improve students' critical thinking skills at SMA Negeri 3 Medan. The research method used was classroom action research with class XI science student participants. The research was conducted in three cycles, with each cycle consisting of planning, implementation, observation and reflection. Data was collected through observation, interviews and document analysis. The research results show that the application of a contextual approach is effective in improving students' critical thinking skills. Students demonstrate improvements in their ability to analyze historical context, identify patterns, and relate learned information to contemporary situations. The implications of this research provide direction for the development of more effective curriculum and learning strategies to facilitate students' critical thinking in the context of history learning at the high school level. The implications of this research highlight the importance of developing innovative and relevant learning strategies for improving the quality of education, as well as the importance of support and cooperation from various related parties. Recommendations for future research include exploring the long-term impact of contextual approaches, factors influencing their successful implementation, and collaboration between educational stakeholders. Thus, this research provides a valuable contribution to the understanding of effective learning strategies for improving students' critical thinking skills in the field of history, as well as providing a basis for the development of better education in the future.

Strategi Pembelajaran Inovatif dalam Meningkatkan Kreativitas Siswa Sekolah Dasar

Creativity is an important ability that needs to be developed from an early age. At the elementary school level, implementing innovative learning strategies can be the key to fostering student creativity. This article examines various innovative learning strategies that are effective in increasing elementary school students' creativity. Through project-based, discovery, cooperative, technology, and STEAM approaches, students are expected to develop creative thinking skills that will benefit them in the future.

Potential field mechanisms and distributed learning for enhancing the navigation of micro/nanorobot in biomedical environments

In complex systems, single micro/nanorobots encounter challenges related to limited loading capacity and navigation, hindering their effective utilization in targeted therapy and drug delivery. To solve these challenges, this paper explores potential field mechanisms as a means to simulate natural collective behavior. This approach aims to enhance the navigation and efficiency of micro/nanorobots in high-demand therapeutic areas. The mechanism enables micro/nanorobots to dynamically adapt to environmental gradients, minimizing off-target effects while maximizing therapeutic efficacy and enhancing robustness through redundancy. Additionally, this study introduces innovative distributed learning and cooperative control strategies. Each micro/nanorobot updates its navigation strategy through local interactions and influences with the dynamic environment. This allows micro/nanorobots to share information and improve their navigation toward therapeutic targets. The simulation results demonstrate that collective behavior and potential field mechanisms can enhance the precision and efficiency of targeted therapy and drug delivery in dynamically changing environments. In conclusion, the proposed approach can improve the limitations of single micro/nanobot, offering new possibilities for the development of advanced therapeutics and drug delivery systems.
